Two Persons Saved as Classic Bertram Goes Ablaze in Geordie Bay

Two persons were saved as a classic twelve meter Bertram sportfish cruiser went ablaze in Geordie Bay, off Rottnest Island, off the coast of Perth in Australia's West coast after 14:40 of Saturday 28 December.  A nearby vessel helped the couple escape the fire, as local Sea Rescue came to the scene to fight the fire, after attempts by those onboard and a nearby boater failed.  Ultimately the classic sportfish, which was at the time tied to a swing mooring succumbed to the fire and sank.  The cause of the fire is not reported, as an investigation is under way.
The classic sportfish in this fire is a Bertram 42 Convertible as designed by David Napier and produced from 1976 to 1987 in a total of 329 units.  The Bertram 42 hull was also produced as a more volume focused motor yacht, with the 42 Convertible replaced by the sleeker looking 43 Convertible.

New Model: BlueGame BGX70

BlueGame presents its new BGX70, its current flagship and largest model to date which also launches the BGX range.   A 21 meter explorer sport yacht hybrid design courtesy of Zuccon, the BlueGame BGX70 brings a sophisticated and revolutionary exterior looks and a distinct layout perfectly combining elegant lines and wide living spaces. The centrality of the owner’s cabin, finds one of its highest expressions in this model. It is in fact centrally located with access both to the living area and to a private area, which can be used as a guest room if necessary. Light plays a fundamental role, particularly in the living areas, where the percentage of glass surfaces is so large that exteriors and interiors merge as a part of the same environment. The result is a transversal and thoroughly nautical vessel in which the impression is that the sea itself is furnishing the interiors. The BlueGame BGX70 is standard powered by twin Volvo 900hp and or optional 1000hp, both with IPS pod propulsion as.  The standard power gives 28 knots max speed, with additional two knots coming from the large engine option.  Awarded as “Most Avant-Garde Yacht” and “Motoryacht of the Year” respectively at the Cannes 2019.

Improve-it = Heesen 50m YN 18650

Heesen has just launched hull number YN 18650 Project Boreas delivered on August twelve 2019, after rigorous sea trials in the North Sea in calm sea conditions with light winds and waves up to half a meter.  Named as m/y Erica this new 50 meter full aluminium motor yacht sports an ultra-efficient Fast Displacement Hull Form hull designed by Dutch hydro dynamics Van Oossanen and engineered by Heesen’s in-house naval architects. Project Boreas is powered by two MTU 1448hp each, and will offer the full suite of benefits the FDHF hull confers, including a fast but efficient cruising speed and a high degree of comfort.  Indeed, during the sea trials Project Boreas proved to be extremely quiet while also exceeding the contractual speed. She reached a top speed of 20 knots, and showed a range higher than the requirements laid out in her specifications. Thanks to large rudders and a powerful bow thruster, she is also very responsive when maneuvering in close quarters.  Frank Laupman of Omega Architects penned the exterior lines of this Heesen YN 18650 50 meter super yacht and he has created a contemporary profile that retains timeless cues. A gently reversed stem carries the bow to the upper deck line, creating a powerful forward profile which is balanced by elegant profile curves and tapered ends to the decks. A lack of fashion plates creates the illusion of suspended upper decks and hardtop, adding a sense of lightness to the design. Mark Whiteley worked closely with the owner to create a warm contemporary interior design, which features bespoke loose furniture on all exterior living spaces. Among many standout details of the interior, the main staircase will certainly make a strong impression on guests when boarding the yacht. The combination of mesmerizing geometry and precious materials such as a nickel mesh wall covering by French artist Sophie Mallebranche allow guests to move from the lower deck to the bridge deck in style.  YN 18650 is a brilliant illustration of how a discerning client can personalize the pre-engineered design platform of a hull already in construction, considerably shortening the delivery time while benefiting from the highest levels of Dutch quality in build and finish.

Project: Aicon 66

Aicon yachts is back, having the brand recently been purchased by two American investors.  Aicon yachts was a success story which characterized the first decade of the second millennium 2001 to 2012, in particular for the 56 and 64 Fly models, and over four hundred boats delivered in a production stint which lasted about ten years, and featured ten models in sizes from 52 up to 85 feet. Aicon return comes from a new 66 designed by Sergio Cutolo, a motor yacht currently in advanced project stages. For Sergio this is not the first collaboration with Aicon having in the past collaborated with the Sicilian yacht builder.  The 66 project is inspired by the 64 which was by many revered as the best Aicon model in the ten year history of the brand.  The hull shape of the Aicon 66 is indeed a direct derivation from the 64 with improvements going in the underwater sections to create a drier ride.  Another feature of the Aicon 66 will also be for flexible interior layout solutions.

New Model: Viking 44 ST

Creating a model within a model has been a successful path for Viking as demonstrated by the 44 Convertible, Open, and Sport Cruiser variants, which share the same hull with uniquely different deck and interior arrangements. The popularity of these new models has encouraged Viking to expand more this theme with the new 44 Sport Tower.  Using Viking five-axis profiler, the new Jersey boat builder designed and built a plug and a female mold to create a rakish fiberglass deckhouse module, fully open to the cockpit while incorporating stylish convertible window lines and a roof overhang. Built into finely tool hardtop is a pair of easily accessed rod stowage compartments. Thanks to this the Viking 44 Sport Tower offers a sharp looking rig with its fitted Palm Beach Towers tuna tower. Add a pair of outriggers and this boat is an ideal ride for the sailfish circuit, cobia hunting and cruising throughout the Bahamas.  In the eleven square meter cockpit, 44 ST sports the must have starboard mezzanine seating arrangement of the Open version. Engine room access is provided with a convenient center-line hatch that’s integral with the mezzanine seating. The ST is also engineered for the installation of a Seakeeper gyro stabilizer, which brings great stability to the vessel to increase overall comfort.  The command deck includes Viking signature and tournament-proven center-line forward helm station on a raised platform for enhanced visibility. The console holds a bank of electronics displays, and has space for engine instrumentation and other accessories. Recessed compartments accommodate radios and additional equipment, plus accessory switches and controls. A sliding off center companionway door and a large set of stairs with a starboard-side vertical handrail lead to the climate-controlled salon. With its just short of five meters beam, the widest of any boat in this class, the salon is a spacious social area for relaxing and entertaining. The starboard-side galley, which sits opposite an L-shaped lounge with a dinette table, includes teak cabinetry with meticulous joinery and fit and finish, expansive Corian counter tops, an electric range, separate under-counter refrigerator and freezer units and a microwave/convection oven. Other notable amenities include a stereo system with a 24-inch flat screen HD TV.  In the forward master stateroom, the island queen bed with mattress has a lift-up top with gas pistons and maple-lined storage underneath. Sea Ray Boat Beaches During Los Angeles Annual Fireworks Show

A thirteen meter Sea Ray boat titled M/Y Gigi Lala with six persons onboard ended beached near the Manhattan Beach Pier, Los Angeles at around 19:00 hours of Sunday eight December.  The Sea Ray boat was anchored about three hundred meters away from the beach, when it drifted to the beach due to increased rough seas and strong wind conditions.  When the captain of the Sea Ray noticed this he slacked the anchor first, which was unsuccessful, and then tried to start the engines, what ultimately ended with the anchor chain going into the starboard side propeller. Los Angeles County Fire Department and two LaCo lifeguards responded to the distressed boat and helped the guest get off board.  45 minutes after the incident two boats from Rescue Harbor Redondo and Marina del Rey started the operation to pull the boat back in the water and take her back in harbor for repairs.
M/Y Gigi Lala the Sea Ray in this beaching is a 450 Express Bridge model as produced from 1998 to 2004.  The Express Bridge line from Sea Ray came out as competition to other similar models from the likes of Carver or Cruisers, offering a total of three models in twelve years, debuting in 1992 with the 350, which was followed by the 440, and then the 450 coming in 1998.

New Model: Seanfinity T4

During the Summer 2019 a new brand Seanfinity entered into the scene with the launch of its first T4 model.  Seanfinity is to a certain extent a new name but behind it are naval architects Gianluca Caputi and propulsion expert Vincenzo Tuccio.  Caputi for those in the know of the Italian scene, in particular that of the South of Rome, in a town called Gaeta, is a family which owned Italcraft from the mid nineties till 2006, and founded Cantieri Navali dell Golfo in 1982.  This last got more a name in building military patrolling and law enforcement craft then pleasure boats over the years, but its yacht legacy is also important especially with the Ipanema series designed by Galeazzi launched in the late eighties and produced till late nineties.  Vincenzo Tuccio founded the surface drive company Top System in 2005 and today this has established itself as one of the top suppliers in this propulsion system type set up.  The Seanfinity T4 is a sport cruiser with a size of over fourteen meters catered mostly to be a tender for a villa in use as a day cruiser, or as a chase boat for a super yacht.  But the T4 as the first tests by Seanfinity have shown and the important 1500 litres capacity has a capability beyond that, having in the Summer made important tests up to the Balearic islands and back.  The Seanfinity T4 is first for this alone a modern sport cruiser with important day boat capability, and transformation technologies, from the must have up and down aft bathing platform, to the opening side bulk heads aft.  Below deck the Seanfinity T4 is offered with two layouts, a Limo version with a dinette which can convert to double berth, or the cabin version which offers a two plus two layout.  The Seanfinity T4 is also varied in its engine choice from more economic to run twin Volvo 400hp stern drive version, to high performance twin diesel with surface drives, or triple and quadruple Mercury 400hp outboard set up.

Project: Palm Beach GT60

Hot on heels of the success and raving reviews of the GT50 Palm Beach is set to release one of the fastest and most fuel efficient motor yachts in the world with this GT60 project set to launch at the 2020 Miami boat show.  In 2019, Palm Beach launched the GT series coming from the vision of CEO Mark Richards for a high technology light weight build and highly efficient hull shape and propulsion, aimed at the buyer who appreciates a more contemporary design, accompanied with high speed, and fuel efficiency that provides a lower carbon footprint.  The GT range has quickly established itself as a new family under the Palm Beach brand, with a third model, the GT70 planned in the not too distant future.  The GT60 is set to cruise at a true 40 knots, at half load, and has much more in reserve for top speed. The first hull is still undergoing final testing so top speed is yet to be confirmed, though indications are showing the mid-forties.  The GT60 is constructed with a high-tech vacuum-infused carbon fiber deck and structure that delivers twice the strength of E-glass but at half the weight. A closed-cell foam core constitutes the main structure of the bulkheads, a high-tech method that further reduces weight while enhancing durability of the yacht. Palm Beach uses vinylester modified-epoxy resin for all its infusion, which is another tell-tale of the brand’s commitment to quality and durability in construction.  Thanks to the amazing new GT60, Palm Beach now has a 60 foot power boat with a four hundred nautical mile range at a cruising speed of 40 knots.  The GT50 and GT60 are designed to appeal to a global market, and are built with the painstaking attention to detail, and to the incredibly high quality standards that people have come to expect and trust in the Palm Beach brand.

Stock Market Float or Not

During the Cannes boat show 2019 pleasure motor yacht and super yacht builder Ferretti Group, which is today made of eight brands; Ferretti, Ferretti Custom Line, CRN, Itama, Mochi, Pershing, Riva, and Wally announced that by the end of the year it was gonna float in the Milan stock exchange.  Ferretti Group is possibly the largest Group as in versatility existing in the yachting market offering a diverse product range from flybridge motor cruisers and yachts, super yachts, sport cruisers and yachts, super sport yachts, traditional cruisers and yachts, and now even performance sailing craft with the purchase of Wally in 2018.
This decision to float was reverted and cancelled less to a month after announcement, with Ferretti Group saying that deteriorating market conditions in the stock market as the prime reason of cancellation.  The Ferretti Group has been very healthy in recent years and onward from 2014.  The Ferretti Group received a 250 million Euros cash injection in 2019 by its major share holders; Chinese Weichai Group, and F Investments of Piero Ferrari.
This decision might have also surprised other boating brands as Princess, Sanlorenzo, and Sunseeker all being rumoured to be interested in floating in the stock market in the near future.  It will be interesting to see if any of these will follow on the plan, or will cancel it completely.  To be fair I think boating and the stock market are a very difficult proposition, due to the volatility of the boating industry, from performing beyond expectations in good times, and going really negative in bad times.
It is also true though that some have done it with success for many years as Beneteau Group, and Brunswick, and also giant USA boat dealership MarineMax.  But lets be fair, the portfolio of the three above is mostly geared toward the entry level sector of the market where a boat has the price of a medium sized sedan car.  Ferretti Group, Princess, Sanlorenzo, and Sunseeker are into the luxurious part of the market, where some of the entry level models cost you the price of a new luxurious sedan car just for general maintenance in a year.
