Nordhavn Small Pennant Big Achievement

What’s a Nordhavn story these days if it doesn’t include some crazy 12-day non-stop voyage at sea? Or a tale about reaching the ends of the earth? Or circling it, for that matter? Propelled by celebrities Twitter accounts and 24-hour news channels, it seems like news is not worth reporting unless it contains shock value or one-upmanship. The same might be said about Nordhavn. Though truly, we are more awed than shocked with the achievements and accomplishments of our owners.  Still, you never hear about the average couple who have purchased their first trawler and spent their first summer cruising up and down the East Coast. Learning the systems, the operations, the fuel management conquering these in and of themselves are a great achievement.  So to kick off 2017, we are hailing the not-so-insignificant accomplishments of owners who have yet to cross an ocean or explore some island in the middle of nowhere or perhaps never will. There’s great pride simply in owning and handling the greatest long range cruising boat on the market today, regardless how far from shore they travel. And in fact, there are more people who can relate to these folks than there ever will be those who connect with the 100,000 nm pennant earners. John Folvig and his family purchased their brokerage Nordhavn 62 back in April and just weeks ago received their 2,500 nm Distance Pennant. They’ve logged 3,300 nm on Ocean Quest, which they accumulated via east-to-west coast trips around Southern Florida via the Keys, as well as day trips from West Palm Beach to the Bahamas, all in the name of building experience and confidence in the boat.  Alas the Sarasota-based Folvigs have their sights set on more than just exploring their home turf waters. The family which also includes John’s wife, Jen, and 3 young sons – decided their 2016 Christmas vacation planned for onboard the boat would be the ideal jumping off point to a six-month Caribbean cruise which commenced with celebrating the holiday at the Bitter End Yacht Club in Virgin Gorda. The clan’s itinerary calls for additional stops in Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Turks & Caicos, and the Caribbean islands.  No, it’s not extreme or unique cruising by any stretch, but it is the adventure of a lifetime for the Folvigs (and seriously, who among us wouldn’t want to trade places with them?) At the end of their six months John estimates they’ll have racked up another 4,000 total miles, and another pennant!  Also celebrating a 2,500 nm Distance Pennant last month were Scott Keihle and Paula Rawls on Nordhavn 55 Tabula Rasa as well as Scott and Glenda O’Connor on their Nordhavn 40 called Cocamo. Congratulations to you all!  The first Distance Pennant is awarded at 2,500 nm, the second at 5,000 nm. Subsequent pennants are issued in 5,000 nm increments.

Palmer Johnson New Web Site

US renowned Super Yacht builder Palmer Johnson presents a new virtual Internet showroom. Founded in 1918 as Johson and Gmack, the company started out by building boats for the Great Lakes commercial fisherman. Ten years later to this the founder's son Palmer Johnson enters the company and builds his first wooden boat, but it will take till 1965 for it to change what it is today a recognized high quality brand name in the yachting industry. During the second World War Palmer Johnson delivers over forty 45 feet Air-Sea rescue boats, and four 65 foot T-class freighters. In 1956 the company moved away from its family founders first being sold to a group of local Sturgeon Bay businessmen, and in 1961 it was transferred again to Texas Instruments founder Pat Haggerty. In 2004 Palmer Johnson was sold again to the actual ownership, and a decision was made to switch to semi custom builds, unlike the previous years where the company was building custom only triple decked super yachts. Today Palmer Johhson features a three series; Supersport, Sportyacht, and Sport, which build a total of ten models which start with the PJ63 Sport and go up to the 72M Supersport. New Model: Sunseeker 66 Manhattan

Doing its World launch at the January 2017 London boat show this new 66 Manhattan is the next chapter for Sunseeker medium large flybridge line. After seeing success with the 2016 launched 52 Manhattan, Sunseeker does a revamp for its Manhattan flybridge series, which equals more around windows on the upper deck and a general rethinking of spaces. Indeed the 66 Manhattan features one of the best layout for owners looking for a twenty meter motor yacht with a four double cabins layout.  The 66 Manhattan also sees Sunseeker looking at other builders for inspiration, for example the midships full beam owners stateroom features a separate entrance, something Prestige has been doing in the last five years.  Other details are the flybridge fins which remind of an Azimut yacht design profile, used for over a decade.  The 66 Manhattan continues to show Sunseeker versatility in propulsion choices for its customers being available as the replacing 65 with both line shaft and Man 1200hp engine combination, or twin Volvo 900hp and IPS pod drives.

Project: Riva 110

Designed by Officina Italiana, the project of the Riva 110 expands on the just launched 100 Corsaro, for a semi wide body raised pilot house type super yacht.  Semi wide body not so large super yachts of around thirty meters in size are becoming increasingly popular with owners and semi production builders in recent years, due to the expansion of space these give to the owners stateroom on the fore part of the main deck.  Yet the CentoDieci is not only similar to the 100 Corsaro on concept, but also in looks, looking very alike outside.  Why would they not?  Consider also that after the launch of hull one of the 100 Corsaro, in couple of days Riva has sold production of this unit till early 2018, which shows a positive market response to both Officina Italiana and  Ferretti Group design engineering teams.

It was 2013 when Viking decided to return into building motor yachts, and a year later to this in the fall of 2014 the first hull was launched, and today the 75 Motor Yacht is a success, with the range getting an order for a new 82 in the second part of 2016.  Come end of 2016 though more positive news comes into Viking way for its Motor Yacht range with an order for a completely new 93 set to launch in mid Summer 2017.  The 93 Motor Yacht will take the title as Viking flagship, from the successful 92 Sportfish which has delivered in ten units in a year and a half production period. Project: Baglietto 41m V-Line

Following the great success of its latest 46m Fast and 54m yachts and the signature of a sales agreement for the first MV19, Baglietto continues to strengthen its brand on different markets by also developing new products, result of the interpretation and specific requirements and wishes of owners. Here enters the Santa Maria Mandolfi designed 41m V-Line project with sober and essential lines characterizing this elegant, sophisticated super yacht, whose sheer line, running uninterruptedly from bow to stern, results in even more streamlined volumes and harmonious profiles. The exteriors can boast huge common areas, totaling more than 300 sqm divided over the yacht’s three decks. The sundeck is approximately 60 sqm wide. On the upper deck, moving forward from the helm station, a large C-shaped sofa overlooks the spacious sunbathing area with a pool, creating a wonderful day area that allows to enjoy life in the open air and take in spectacular views. The interiors are wide, open, with large, often full-height, glazed surfaces. In particular, the main deck salon has been designed by conceiving the dining area as the ‘center of gravity’ between the interiors and the outdoor areas, and allowing to use it both as a traditional indoor dining room and, once the glazing dividing the salon from the cockpit is entirely opened, as a deck that opens onto the outside. In this way, the living room has been moved forward, exploiting the available width to the fullest. Hull engineering on all projects has been carried out by Baglietto Engineering Department. The 41m V-Line yacht is under 500 tons and will be equipped with two Cat engines that will push her to a maximum speed of 15 knots and a cruise of 11 knots.

Best of 2016

2016 marked another growing year for the pleasure boating industry, with important builders reaching new sale highs of the last six years.  This is all positive news considering that the World in 2016 took some complicated decisions, which will make the future a less liberal place to be.  Forecast tell that 2017 is also looking to be another positive year for pleasure boating, with estimates suggesting for another double digit growth compared to 2016.  Interestingly it is not the first time we see this, that when the World feels confused the nautical industry gets a boost and grows with 2002 being an example of this.  It is just that with the bad news, boat people think that it is just not worth to bother and switch into enjoying life.  Why not?  Life is also about enjoying it, and boating apart being an adventurous independent way to do that makes also switching off  from the rest amazingly easy.

The best of 2016 is the Arcadia Sherpa 60. The boutique only six years old Italian from Naples builder does it again, taking PowerYacht's best of the year for the second time with the Sherpa, its new entry level model out of normal thought and designed sixteen meter tug boat inspired explorer yacht.  Arcadia and Francesco Guida shows why they are the builder and designer of the times, thanks to the innovation the Sherpa 60 delivers; unseen for the size exterior spaces, one or two or three cabin layout choice, and Volvo power with IPS propulsion good for speeds up to the mid twenties.  Can Arcadia deliver a third best of the year, in Italy they say there is no two without a three.

The others.

Amer 94. This semi-custom yacht builder from North Italy surprises the Volvo world in 2016 by building the largest ever IPS propulsion boat, with triple 900hp powering this 28 meter 64 tons super yacht.

Astondoa 655 Coupe. For its first century celebration the Spanish Astondoa launches two new ranges, the super yacht Century line and Coupe sport cruiser and yacht series.  The 655 is an innovative ultra modern looking sport yacht designed by Christian Gatto with unedited solutions.

Bertram 35. Gavio took Bertram from Ferretti Group in 2015, and this 35 designed by Michael Peters is the first model. A modern re-interpretation of the 31, Bertram's and World first production deep-Vee hull boat which sold over 1700 units in a twenty year production run.

Horizon FD85. Horizon decide to offer something new and different, enters the Fast Displacement 85 designed by Dutch designer Cor D.Rover which gives an extra 25% of volume to comparable yachts of the same size.

Otam SD35. For its largest ever build, semi-custom or as is this case fully custom boutique yacht builder Otam goes to a new different direction, building in alloy and going for a semi-displacement hull shape.

Overmarine Mangusta 42 Oceano. Famous for building the largest semi-custom super sport yachts in fiberglass, Overmarine make huge investments to enter the important segment of steel hulled full displacement globe trotting super yachts.  Perfection planning for a new product offer.

Sacs 47 Rebel. While not its largest rib to date, the 47 Rebel designed by Christian Grande is Sacs most innovative product to date, thanks to the use of mouldable semi-rigid tubes and an un-edited layout.

Tecnomar Evo 55 Open. After over a decade Tecnomar return to offer a sub eighty foot yacht, with this semi custom sixteen meter sport yacht designed by Gian Marco Ciampanino. Saying ultra modern is an understatement with the Evo 55 looking coming from a sci-fi movie set into the future far away.

Welcome back. Rizzardi 48 In. In the second part of the 2000s first decade, InRizzardi which at that time featured six brands looked to be the next big yachting Group to come from Italy.  Unfortunately the fall 2008 recession turned the economy upside down, made easy money a thing of the past, and the Rizzardi dream getting lost in all this.  Or so we thought as Rizzardi is back in 2016 with new projects, and its 48 In model, a redevelopment of the 45 Incredible which was the best fourteen meter sport cruiser to come from the Genoa boat show of 2004 and the South Rome builders top success from there onwards.

PowerYacht wishes to all its followers, friends, readers, and visitors a Healthy and Prosperous 2017 year.
