Benetti 24th Yachtmaster

The 24th Yachtmaster organized by Benetti in Budapest from the 21st to the 23rd of February has just ended. The event, involving over 300 guests from all over the world, was a great success with the participation of captains, owner representatives, surveyors, stewardesses and industry professionals.  Modern owners experience the purchase of a yacht as the maximum expression of their lifestyle. Today, the new concept of lifestyle on board involves renewed purpose and layout for the spaces, increasingly informal and convivial, capable of blending into the surrounding nature. The deck extends over the water and the landscape integrates the furnishings through the large windows of the new Voyager yachts by Benetti. The growth of the yacht market is also evidence of this, perfect for those seeking adventure, and not just the most exclusive places. If the yacht is the object through which a lifestyle is expressed, certainly the captain and his crew are the human component that strongly influences the owners' on-board experience.  It is from these considerations that the program for the 2024 edition of the Benetti Yachtmaster was born, introduced by the CEO of Azimut|Benetti Group Marco Valle, who welcomed the guests and emphasized the crucial role of the captains and their skills in building the yachts of the future.

Competing in the category “Displacement Motor Yachts below 500GT, 40m to 44.9m,” Kaşif stands out as a testament to Bilgin Yacht's commitment to innovation in the yachting industry. Built in Bilgin's advanced facility within the prestigious Antalya Free Zone, the yacht epitomizes the brand's ethos of boundary-pushing craftsmanship.  The visionary exterior, crafted by Emrecan Özgün of Unique Yacht Design, enhances Kaşif's striking profile and stellar performance. “Kaşif is designed to navigate the toughest conditions with ease while providing unparalleled comfort,” states Özgün. Internally, the yacht's design narrative, envisioned by Enrico Lumini of Hot Lab, Italy, unfolds a story of meticulous collaboration and artistic endeavor. “Kaşif is a modern yet timeless aesthetic, seamlessly blending contemporary geometries with elements reflecting the owners' passions,” Lumini explains. The yacht's living areas showcases a sophisticated blend of contemporary design and personal elements, with varying palettes and themes across its decks, ensuring elegance and comfort.

Centunonavi Lands in Saudi Arabia

In mid-December 2023, Centunonavi was presented to the Saudi world at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia. The event was attended by a significant number of Saudi royals and a relevant business audience from the Arab world.  The idea behind the new generation of yachts by Centunonavi, a Viareggio-based shipyard founded by the naval engineer Marco Arnaboldi, is to achieve uncompromising performance thanks to refined custom-made construction combined with water-jet propulsion - indeed, all the models in the range can achieve speeds close to 60 knots.  At the end of the event, a dealership agreement was signed by Marco Arnaboldi (representing Centunonavi) and by His Royal Highness Naif Bin Abdullah Bin Saus Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, through his company Durah al Fodah. The company will enthusiastically promote the Italian shipyard's range in Saudi Arabia, managing every technical and commercial aspect of the product, starting with the purchase of a demo boat available to all the people who want to experience the thrill of speeding over water at 55 knots in maximum comfort and in an environmentally friendly way.

Cranchi New 2024 Color Collection

Two new colors from the updated Cranchi Yachts Colour Collection: Grigio Aurora (grey) and Verde Audace (green) are available for 2024.  Grigio Aurora is ideal for accentuating the romantic nature of the yachts, while Verde Audace maximises their sportiness. The customisation program offered by Cranchi Yachts was created precisely for this purpose: to offer owners the chance to give their personal vessel a unique, personalised colour.  The 2024 Colour Collection will soon be available, with an ever-more refined and distinctive selection of recommended colours for customising the vessels’ hulls. Cranchi dealers are ready to provide details and will soon be able to show customers the new colour chart.

Ferretti Group Supports David Beckham 7 Fund for Unicef

An auction organised by Ferretti Group, in support of David Beckham’s 7 Fund for UNICEF, has ended, with the proceeds of the special-edition yacht going towards UNICEF’s work in El Salvador, creating safe spaces for children to learn and play.  The Ferretti Group auctioned a Riva Anniversario boat to raise funds, which will go towards protecting children, particularly those living in El Salvador whose lives are often threatened by violence.  In 2023, the 7 Fund delivered sports, cultural, and artistic activities to over five thousand children and adolescents in El Salvador. These activities aimed to foster inclusion, eliminate gender stereotypes, and strengthen community bonds, all while addressing the problems that that the country faces concerning violence against children. To date, more than 36,000 children in El Salvador have benefited from this programme.  “Providing children with safe spaces to learn and play is key to ensuring their enrolment in education and providing them with opportunities to develop their full potential. This is why we are grateful to Ferretti Group for the donation made to UNICEF through the 7 Fund,” said UNICEF Private Fundraising and Partnerships Director Carla Haddad Mardini.  “I would like to thank UNICEF for the chance to contribute through our boat to such a noble and deserving cause as the one supported by ‘7 Fund for UNICEF’. It is an honour to have actively participated in this project that offers hope and opportunity to thousands of children and their families,” said Ferretti Group CEO Alberto Galassi.  In El Salvador, violence against children and adolescents continues to be one of the country's greatest challenges to the fulfilment of their rights. Social norms and attitudes perpetuate various forms of violence against children and adolescents, including at home and in school. In 2023, the lead institution of El Salvador’s protection system reported 28,779 violations of the rights of children and adolescents, with 87.45% of these violations related to violence and abuse.  To help tackle this issue, the 7 Fund is working in six of the most violent areas of El Salvador to help prevent and respond to acts of violence against children and adolescents. The goal is to help them to attend school by making public spaces safer and child-friendly, and to strengthen child protection services, making them more accessible. The 7 Fund also aims to provide all children in the six areas with the opportunity to play sports safely, so that they can develop resilience and learn life skills. 7: The David Beckham UNICEF Fund was launched in February 2015 to mark David Beckham’s tenth year as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. The Fund is a unique partnership between David Beckham and UNICEF that is helping to give vulnerable and disadvantaged children the opportunity to reach their full potential.

Kadey-Krogen Group Adds Industry Veterans in Team Expansion

The Kadey-Krogen Group, builder of the world class series of Krogen ocean-crossing trawlers, the performance cruising series Summit Motoryachts, and the coastal cruising brand American Tug, announces the addition of Katie Astras and Jay Christopher to their in-house team as Interior Designer and Customer Care Manager, respectively. Together, they bring more than 50 years of experience in the industry, with deep knowledge not only of The Kadey-Krogen Groups’ products, but with their core customer base as well.  “I started working with Kadey-Krogen in the late 90s, I was the in-house designer for Palmer Johnson working out of their refit yard in Savannah, Georgia, and we did a lot of work with the group,” Katie says. “For the last decade I’ve been working with the team as an interior design subcontractor, so I’m very familiar with the group and I’m thrilled to join the team full time.”  In her role as Interior Designer, Katie will be integral at ensuring The Kadey-Krogen Group owners truly are at home on any sea. “I think the interiors have gotten more sophisticated as the years have gone by,” she said. “Everyone has higher expectations, they desire a higher level of sophistication regarding what they want and need for soft goods and interior amenities, and the team at Kadey-Krogen has met that demand.”  Katie will work with clients throughout the build process, creating a curated package of soft goods and joinery to fit their individual tastes. “We have standard packages of soft goods, countertops, fabrics, things like that, but as a boutique builder we have the capacity to do just about anything,” she says. “We had a potential owner ask us about putting a hot tub onboard, which would be a little atypical on a trawler. But instead of discounting it and saying ‘no’ the entire team put their heads together and figured out if it was possible, how to do it, and what it might cost. And that person hadn’t even signed a contract yet. That’s what I love about this team. The company has a culture of ‘let’s figure it out.’ People are using their boats differently now than they were 10, 20 years ago. We get that. Whether it’s onboard technology or new fabrics, Kadey-Krogen is always at the forefront of the market.”  Jay Christopher, Kadey-Krogen’s new Customer Care Manager, is taking the helm from Gregg Gandy, who held the role of Project Manager for Kadey-Krogen for 20 years. Jay’s professional experience on the water stretches back to growing up on Cape Cod where he worked as a detailer and rigger while giving sailing lessons. His passion for boats led him to boatbuilding school in Maine, then on to the Maxi and America’s Cup campaigns of the early 1990s.  “I was working for Bill Koch as one of his property and marina managers on the Cape, and I got an invite to go sailing with them down in Newport,” Christopher said. “That led to me being one of the permanent crew aboard Matador2 winning the ‘90 Rolex Maxi World Cup then part of the ’92 and ’95 America’s Cup campaigns as shore team. For the ’97 campaign I was sent over to Prada’s team. We showed up in Livorno with two boats and 15 containers, and that’s where I really started managing large projects. I’ve been doing it ever since.”  In addition to his experience in the sailing world, Jay has decades of experience in large powerboats working as a service manager, warranty representative and training captain for marinas and service yards throughout New England including the reputable Oyster Harbors Marine. “It’s rare to love both sail and power, but I really do. My sailor roots combined with years running big powerboats is the perfect blend for The Krogen Group’s expanding line of yachts,” said Chistopher. Recently Jay also earned his credentials as an Associate Surveyor with the Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors.  Jay will be based out of Kadey-Krogen Group’s headquarters in Stuart, Florida. In his day-to-day activities, he will manage new boat commissioning, handle warranty issues, and help owners with all their service needs and systems issues. Additionally, Jay will assist with new build customer orientation, helping a new owner get acquainted with their boat and spending time with them onboard while they get comfortable with their new surroundings. “I want to instill confidence in our clients. I’ll walk them through everything from systems operations to docking, then be there to support them throughout the lifetime of their ownership,” he said. “I find with new owners, those first few days together are invaluable to building assurance in their boat and with us.”  “We’re incredibly excited to have Jay and Katie join our team full time,” said Tucker West, President and CEO of Kadey-Krogen Group. “Katie and Jay both bring with them not only a lifetime of experience in the industry, but a deep knowledge of our products, and our owners. Their addition will help us continue to provide the uncompromising level of service that our clients expect.”

Riviera Return to Roche Harbor Rendezvous

A gleaming fleet of 42 luxury Riviera motor yachts and some 155 guests turned out for the annual Roche Harbor Rendezvous in the pristine Pacific waters of the San Juan Islands, US, hosted by Emerald Pacific Yachts. Even a dash of overcast weather couldn’t keep people’s spirits from shining brightly during the Hawaiian-themed weekend in June last year.  Recently joining the Riviera family were Curt and Robin Pryde, who said they loved the social event and also the chance to meet Riviera owner Rodney Longhurst and his family.  The Prydes acquired their 505 SUV, Amanti Mare,  last year and the summer of ’23 was their first full season aboard. “It’s great to meet the Riviera family and learn about what people have done on their boats. I really enjoyed hearing people’s stories about where they’ve travelled to and marinas they’ve stayed in – it’s been great travel advice and we’ve used it. Owning a Riviera is a really nice way to enter the boating world,” says Robin. “I enjoyed a delightful balance of meeting new people and getting to know this new Riviera family, but also the valuable information gathering and the series of educational seminars, including with the owner, Rodney,” says Robin.  Husband Curt agrees: “Rodney was really interested in what we owners are looking for and what support we’d like for a better and safer boating experience. Since then, our local dealer [Emerald Pacific Yachts] has implemented a new 24-hour help line with hired techs who are on call to address owner questions when needed. That’s a real positive in my mind because Riviera and their dealerships actually want to support their customers and make the after-service experience excellent,” says Curt. “Riviera and their dealerships care about long-term relationships; that comes through loud and clear.”  Cocktail hours, pickleball and classy and competitive pot luck dinners rounded out the weekend’s entertainment, all wonderfully organized by Emerald Pacific Yachts.  “It was ironic that it rained for the Hawaiian-themed weekend, but we had a lot of fun at the luau on Saturday night with hula dancing, great music and so many people got into it,” says Robin. “Plus, mimosas and donuts on a Saturday morning is always fun!”  Long-time Riviera owner Tim Nemeth’s three-year absence from the San Juan Island’s Rendezvous made his ’23 return so much sweeter. “When I got there, I realized just how much I’d missed it and how much we enjoy getting together with other Riviera owners,” says Tim. “It was our first time back after Covid restrictions and we’d missed the ’22 Rendezvous so it was wonderful to be back.”  Tim and his wife Michelle have been Riviera supporters for nearly 20 years and currently own a luxury 6000 Sport Yacht. As always, the relaxing time of socializing was punctuated with organized activities for the energetic. In addition to pickleball, golf and cornhole made their traditional appearance at the Rendezvous. “Michelle and I did get involved with the cornhole tournament … actually, we took first place. We ended up beating Rodney’s sons by one point. They were really good and competitive and we’re not regular players, so we just got really lucky, though we played as hard as we could.  “It was great to catch up with friends we know and meet new faces and the weekend was fun! It’s also beautiful the way the Rivieras are all lined up at the dock and you can walk by and see them all and say ‘hi’ to everyone. It’s a great bonding time.”  The 2024 Roche Harbor Riviera Rendezvous dates have been set for June 7-9 and, this year, Emerald Pacific Yachts said they were expecting the largest attendance and number of Rivieras. This will also be the first year a catered sit-down dinner will take place in the Roche Harbor Pavilion. Of course, all of the other fun events will take place plus a few new ones!

Sanlorenzo also stated that it plans to raise this figure to 3.1MW by the end of 2024.  With sustainability at the core of Sanlorenzo's growth strategy, this project represents a "significant step forward" for the Group, as explained by Ferruccio Rossi, general manager and president of the yard's superyacht division. Antonini Navi Celebrates Keel Laying

During a private ceremony held at its La Spezia shipyard and attended by the owner, Antonini Navi has laid the keel of the new 32-metre Explorer Yacht, a full-custom with delivery planned in 2025.  Keel-laying is a key moment in the process of building a yacht. Accompanied by a small group of friends, by the head of marine engineering and layout at Hydro Tec, Sergio Cutolo, and by management and various representatives from Antonini Navi, the owner contributed to this important milestone that follows the ribbon-cutting by ‘symbolically’ welding the first section of the hull.  The structural steelwork will be completed by the end of June 2024 and the hull will be joined to the deck in July, again at Antonini Navi’s La Spezia yard. The fitting-out, curated by Milan-based Hot Lab studio, will start in August.  In the next few days, Antonini Navi will be staging another keel-laying ceremony, this time for the Seamore 33, which has been sold to an Italian customer presented by brokerage company Mediayachts.

Archipelago Yachts Awarded DFT Funding

Archipelago Yachts, in partnership with Chartwell Marine, Boat Electrics and Electronics (BEE) and Engineered Marine Systems (EMS), has been awarded funding as part of the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition Round 4 (CMDC4), which will enable the progression of a methanol-powered low carbon emission leisure vessel.  Following a four-stage process, which involved five independent assessors selected from industry and academia, the British boat builder has been chosen as one of six businesses which were successful in their applications.  This project is part of the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition Round 4 (CMDC4), funded by the UK Department for Transport (DfT) and delivered by Innovate UK. CMDC4 is part of the Department’s UK Shipping Office for Reducing Emissions (UK SHORE) programme, a £206m initiative focused on developing the technology necessary to decarbonise the UK domestic maritime sector.  Dr Stephen Weatherley, founder of Archipelago said: “We are thrilled to be awarded this funding, which is going to make a huge impact for the future of the maritime industry in terms of sustainability. The funding will be used to create a methanol demonstrator vessel, powered by clean bio-methanol, creating a low carbon emission leisure vessel. Since founding Archipelago, clean maritime solutions have always been a huge focus for the company and this grant is allowing us to honour that, which is amazing.”  The Archipelago 47, designed by award-winning naval architects Chartwell Marine, was the first vessel designed in the range at 47 feet, bridging the gap between performance, range and luxury accommodation. The yacht was designed to feel like a home, making it the ultimate family cruiser with easily accessible and serviceable systems.  The propulsion system which will be used for this new sustainable vessel was designed by Archipelago and Chartwell with collaborators BEE and EMS. The design boasts a revolutionary parallel hybrid system, combining the clean energy derived from a pair of methanol reformers and hydrogen fuel cells.  Archipelago was up against 20 other applications in the competition, of which 17 were assessed with 11 chosen for final interviews and six approved for funding.  As part of this project the methanol-powered vessel will be demonstrated in the UK for a one-month period during March 2025.

Azimut Wins 2024 Powerboat of the Year

The Azimut Magellano 60 was recognized as the winner of the European Powerboat Award for the category of yachts up to 20 meters during boot Düsseldorf 2024  At Flagship Night, the nautical industry event organized by Boot Düsseldorf with the publishing house Delius Klasing on January 20th, the winners of the 2024 European Powerboat Award were announced, spotlighting the best boats tested by the jury during the previous nautical year.  Azimut’s Magellano 60 is the winner of the “up to 20 meters” category. Presented for the first time at the 2023 Cannes Yachting Festival, the already award-winning Magellano 60 also amazed the jury of the European Powerboat Award, which is made up of authoritative international experts from the main European nautical publications. They explained their decision to award Azimut, stating that “the Magellano 60 impresses in the motor yacht class up to 20 meters. In addition to its successful visual appearance, the Magellano 60 is characterized by her newly developed hull, which ensures perfect handling at both slow and fast speeds. The workmanship and safety standards are also of the highest level”.  The Magellano 60, in fact, guarantees high performance with the efficient Dual Mode semi-planing hull, which cruises in total comfort at low speeds and can reach higher speeds, all the while mitigating the impact of waves and optimizing the yacht’s consumption and emissions.  At just 60 feet, she is a true crossover of the sea, complete with all the comforts appreciated on long voyages. The elegant external lines traced by Ken Freivokh combine with the large spaces on board; the most characteristic part of the Magellano 60 is the stern, which is transformed into an Infinity Terrace with a transparent parapet that offers visual continuity with the sea. Additionally, the natural extension of the Main Deck to meet the cockpit helps to harmonize the experience of the yacht with nature.  Today, the Magellano 60 is also synonymous with reduced emissions, because she is the first boat in the Azimut fleet to run on HVO, the biofuel produced by Eni Live (Eni Sustainable Mobility) with 100% renewable raw materials*. According to the results of the tests carried out by the Shipyard, this biofuel, combined with the Dual Mode hull, supports high levels of performance and a reduction in well-to-wake CO2 emissions of more than 80% compared to a yacht of comparable size powered by fossil fuels.

Benetti 150 Years in Book by Assouline

Benetti is the protagonist of the new book from Assouline, the prestigious New York publishing house with nearly 2,000 titles sold worldwide on topics such as luxury and design. This extraordinary publication takes the reader on a fascinating journey around one of the world’s most famous shipyards.  Founded in Viareggio in 1873, Benetti has a long history of tradition, innovation and success in the luxury yacht building industry, and this book written by Kevin Koenig, one of the world’s most authoritative yachting journalists, captures the brand’s essence and gives readers deep insights into its evolution. Using archive images, the volume bears witness to the passion and hard work that have contributed to making Benetti one of the world’s leading luxury brands.  The book accompanies readers through decades of challenges, successes and innovations of the Shipyard, from its founding through to the 1960s, when Benetti invented the concept of the modern megayacht and launched the iconic and timeless ‘motopanfilo’ yachts with the Delfino, Gabbiano and Mediterraneo lines, and from the technological revolution of the 1990s and 2000s, which saw the introduction of diesel-electric engines on the Ambrosia III (now available for practically all Benetti yacht families), through to the “giga season”, a period of just 100 days in 2020 that saw the launch of the M/Y Lana, M/Y Luminosity and M/Y IJE, three giga yachts over 100 metres long and including the largest hybrid in the world.  Benetti has shown an untiring commitment to excellence by collaborating with the best engineers and top international designers, some working in sectors such as architecture, art, automotive and fashion, to generate stylistic contamination and an endless flow of new developments.  In the book significant attention is given to famous owners who have chosen Benetti yachts over the years, attracted by the quality of the craftsmanship and the idea of being able to enjoy the beautiful experience that only life on board a yacht like this can offer. From magnate Adnan Khashoggi, who commissioned the most famous yacht of all time, the “Nabila”, to Prince Ranieri of Monaco and David Bowie, who spent his holidays on his “El Caran”.  This new volume is a celebration of the heritage and dedication of all the people – founders, designers and the entire workforce – who have made Benetti a touchstone in the global luxury yachting world. With its refined presentation, eloquent narrative and range and depth of detail, this coffee table book is an extraordinary tribute to a unique success story that continues to sail into the future.

Feadship Sets Sail on Diamond Jubilee Celebration

The year 2024 is the beginning of Feadship’s Diamond Jubilee, a year-long celebration. While it may be 75 years for Feadship, the combined experience of De Vries (1906), De Voogt (1913) and Van Lent (celebrating its 175th anniversary this year) amounts to a maritime legacy of an astonishing 404 years, a number unmatched in the industry.  Since the modest origins in 1949, today Feadship has an astounding 1,700-metres of yachts under construction, including ground-braking projects like hydrogen fuel cell propulsion: the majestic 118.80-metre Project 821. Now Feadship has four shipyards in the Netherlands: Aalsmeer, Amsterdam, Kaag and Makkum and operates in eight other locations: Hoofddorp, Leiden, Papendrecht, Moordrecht, Heiloo, Waddinxveen and in Fort Lauderdale, USA. Feadship employs over 2,000 people and is seen as a beacon of excellence in superyacht craftsmanship.  It’s been a staggering growth curve since the first Feadships appeared at the New York National Boat Show, two years after a group of marine business owners gathered for an organizational meeting at De Roode Leeuw café in Amsterdam in 1949 to devise a plan to sell Dutch-built boats abroad. Far from the glamour that now surrounds the superyacht industry, Feadship sprung from a pragmatic – perhaps even desperate – post-World War II plan to rescue Dutch industries by kick-starting exports to generate much-needed hard currency. With most of Europe digging out literally and financially, boat builders wishing to prosper in needed to look further afield. The United States represented by far the most attractive potential market. Assured of some government support, six boat builders launched Feadship, the First Export Association of Dutch SHIPbuilders with one purpose: “to promote the export of luxury craft to the United States of America”. Each of the members pledged the sum of 500 Dutch Guilders (purchasing power of € 2.400 today) to the cause – a significant amount at this impoverished time for a clearly ambitious venture.  The well-known naval architect and former boat builder Henri de Voogt joined Feadship soon after. His role was to be the designer of the future Feadships and often the chief salesman. It was a simple plan; each yard would contribute a boat designed for export and all would share in the cost of marketing Feadships abroad. All hopes and many jobs shipped along with three small boats – 8-metre and 10-metre motor cruisers and a 6.50-metre daysailer – sent to the January 1951 New York Boat Show. Crowds packed the Feadship stand eager to see the sturdy steel hulls and all yachts were quickly snapped up. With news of custom yachts of 23 and 30-metre ordered by prominent Americans in 1952, and 17-metre Capri and 19-metre Coronet crowned Queens of the 1953 and 1954 New York Boats shows respectively, Feadship was off to the races.  The early years were not without teething pains and troubles with agents, cash flow, and the withdrawal of several original members, but with glowing reviews and ninety yachts already sold in America in the first eight years, the potential rewards for persevering in the market were clear. The builders of two of those very first Feadships shown in the US, Royal Van Lent and Koninklijke De Vries, now are juggernauts of the superyacht world and the Feadship brand has delivered over five hundred yachts to date, with another four slated to deliver in 2024.  Just as adding furniture maker Van der Loo to their team in the 1950s and De Klerk later gave unprecedented quality to their yachts’ interiors, the yards determination to innovate in technical areas with corrosion control, mechanical and electrical systems, aluminium and carbon fibre construction and the use of glass made Feadship the brand that sets industry standards.  Feadships such as Sussuro, Ecstasea and Predator sent luxury into the fast lane, while yachts like Savannah and Obsidian showed how luxury could have less impact and launched Feadship on its campaign to net zero by 2030.

Feadship Announces 2024 Young Designer of the Year Award

Pradipta R. Hakim of Indonesia captured the 2024 Young Designer of the Year (YDOY) Award with his concept yacht Blueminance. This is Feadship’s first time as the official sponsor of YDOY, a programme that fosters creativity and excellence within the yacht design community. The award was announced last night as part of the Boat International Design & Innovation Awards event in Kitzbühel, Austria.  The highly regarded YDOY award is recognised as a platform for young, aspiring designers to showcase their skills and gain recognition within the superyacht industry. “At Feadship, we firmly believe in nurturing aspiring talent and fostering a culture of attainable innovation in yacht design. This collaboration with BOAT International Media allows us to share our profound passion and extensive expertise with the next generation of designers,” said Farouk Nefzi, Chief Marketing Officer at Feadship.  This year the entrants, all of whom must be under 28 years of age, were asked to imagine themselves as junior designers working for Studio De Voogt, Feadship’s design division. Their assignment was to develop a superyacht concept design as might be shown at Feadship’s yacht show displays. The brief required the concepts to be futuristic, include environmental innovations, make use of current and ‘near-future’ technology, and show a comprehensive, workable deck layout. The yacht’s length was up to the designer. Contestants also had to render their interior design concept, anticipating how owners' onboard lifestyles might evolve in the future.  The jury of twelve superyacht design professionals narrowed the 26 entrants to six finalists before meeting for a day-long discussion and decision. Jury Chairman Roger Lean-Vercoe said Hakim’s “well-presented design showed strong, innovative and attractive lines, which were accompanied by an extremely well-drawn general arrangement plan and an appealing interior design.”  Tanno Weeda, Studio De Voogt’s Head of Design, notes that Hakim’s presentation, “immediately made me curious and would like to know more about it. He presented good substantiation for his concept. I believe it is a buildable, Feadship-worthy design.”  An enthusiastic supporter of Feadship’s decision to partner with Boat International Media for the seventeenth edition of the YDOY programme, Weeda added, “It is important that young talents can develop within the yachting industry and are informed of new technology. We want to encourage a generation of open-minded, new people who are not yet in a design straitjacket to join and excel in the yachting industry.”  Winner Pradipta R. Hakim is a student at Indonesia’s Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology, a public university located in Surabaya, East Java, with a strong emphasis on science, engineering, and innovation, especially areas that support industry and the maritime sector. In addition to opportunities throughout the year to visit Feadship and superyacht shows, Hakim also wins a cash prize of €3,000 to help further his career goals.

Ferretti Yachts Triumphs at Boat International Awards 2024

InFYnito 90, the Ferretti Yachts maxi-flybridge designed for a sustainable seagoing experience, has been acclaimed at the keenly awaited Boat International Design and Innovation Awards 2024, in the Outstanding Lifestyle Feature category. The award ceremony took place on the evening of Sunday January 28 in the magnificent alpine setting of Kitzbühel, at an event attended by many leading names in the yachting world.  These prestigious awards are reserved for projects deemed the most innovative not only in terms of naval architecture and cutting-edge engineering solutions, but also according to criteria such as the design and elegance of the hull.  Ferretti’s award in the ‘Outstanding Lifestyle Feature’ category is yet another endorsement of the success of this innovative new proposition from a brand that is charting a new course under the banner of sustainability.  Ferretti Yachts InFYnito 90 is the result of collaboration between the Strategic Product Committee led by Piero Ferrari and the Ferretti Group Engineering Department, with exterior design by architect Filippo Salvetti and interiors by Ideaitalia.  One of the main elements that convinced the jury was the iconic ‘All–Season Terrace’, a covered area forward that perfectly embodies the inspiration behind the yacht’s design, that of putting people at the centre. This extension to the superstructure provides both protection in all weather conditions and total privacy.  Taken as a whole, the yacht is characterised by the fusion of highly customisable outdoor and indoor spaces into an unparalleled continuum.  InFynito also brings to market the Group’s F.S.E.A. technology (Ferretti Sustainable Enhanced Architecture), a package of environmentally friendly cruising solutions. One of the most significant is an integrated system that combines the solar power collected by photovoltaic panels installed on the yacht’s superstructure with an energy bank, not to mention extensive use of green materials.

Leopard Yachts New Facility

Italian firm Cantieri Leopard Investment has announced plans for a brand-new shipbuilding centre located along the Navicelli Canal near Pisa. The proposed project is estimated to cost around 25 million euros and is currently awaiting approval from the requisite authorities. In the meantime, Cantieri Leopard Investment has opened discussions with interested parties looking to purchase the land and take over the development for a new construction or refit facility.  According to Leopard Yachts the canal leads directly to the port of Livorno for unobstructed access to the sea, making the production site ideally situated to form a new industry cluster similar to Viareggio and La Spezia.  The plans refer to a new shipbuilding centre covering approximately 37,880 square metres of the yard's existing property, consisting of a production building with the capacity for six yachts up to 65 metres in length, an administrative office building, operational yards and a dock leading to the water's edge. The facility will also be equipped with a towing and launching basin and a 1,200-ton travel lift.  A key focus of this project has been to optimise on-site energy efficiency and autonomy with special attention going towards the yard's operational processes, including its air and water emission treatment. The site will also feature the use of photovoltaic panels expected to provide at least 60 per cent of its annual energy requirements when operating at full capacity.

Sacs Tecnorib New Chief Operating Officer

Nicola Antonelli, 36, a graduate of the IULM University of Languages and Communication in Milan, started his professional career at Ducati Motor Holding S.p.a., in various roles within the Sales & Marketing division. He collaborated with internationally renowned companies in the maritime industry before eventually becoming part of Sacs Tecnorib Spa.  “I could almost say that it is a return to my roots, as boating is a family legacy and an industry that I have always followed from up close,” said Nicola. “More than 10 years in a company of excellence such as Ducati have been invaluable and have given me insight into the macro-trends of the automotive industry, from which the marine sector sometimes draws inspiration and looks to. The idea of being able to translate this experience into the naval sector was an encouragement, the fact that I could express myself in a field that I am viscerally passionate about the motivation that drove me to this new professional adventure. I am pleased and proud to be part of a fantastic team, and I will dedicate all my efforts to be able to contribute to the future of the shipyard.”  In carrying his work, Nicola Antonelli will report directly to Matteo Magni and Giovanni De Bonis, President and CEO of Sacs Tecnorib Spa, respectively.  Founded in 1989, Sacs srl has set new trends over the years by inaugurating the era of luxury “maxi-ribs”, with the Strider range, which pair performance and safety with the comfort of a yacht. It has innovated the industry through the introduction of the Rebel line, featuring yachts ranging from 40 to 55 feet. While drawing inspiration from the world of RIBs, these vessels redefine the conventional yacht concept, and embody a distinct and innovative design approach. Simultaneously, Tecnorib has played a pivotal role in solidifying the maxi-rib market thanks to a highly successful partnership spanning over 15 years with the esteemed brand PIRELLI. The existing product lines, Pirelli Tender and Pirelli Speedboats, seamlessly integrate the shipyard’s wealth of experience and technological expertise with the unmistakable style and DNA of Pirelli.  “The integration of the two entities, culminating in the formation of Sacs Tecnorib Spa in 2021, signifies the successful realization of our determined growth objectives in recent years and the bolstering of our footprint in international markets. The investments, site development plans, and empowerment of our organisational structure with key managerial additions, including Nicola, lay the foundation for our entire team to embrace new opportunities and challenges on the horizon,” said President Matteo Magni.

Sacs Tecnorib Consolidates Its Position

Participation at Boot Düsseldorf was an opportunity for Sacs Tecnorib to present the results of its growth and confirm its world leadership in the maxirib industry. Great commercial success for the Rebel 50 G, the flagship of the stand and the newest addition to the Rebel range, which, though with clear references to the rib world, identifies an innovative and unconventional yacht. The company continues to look to the future with determination and ambition, aiming to consolidate its leading role in the market.  Indeed, the company, which has recorded annual revenue growth of 25% in the past three years, can declare a turnover of 59.3 million euros in 2023, with 141 units sold of the Sacs, Pirelli and Rebel brands, excluding the PIRELLI tender range. A significant figure is the order backlog for 2024, which also foresees significant growth in sales for this year.  The production area includes 3 sites with almost 20,000 square metres of covered space, also thanks to the company’s major investment in expanding the Roncello boatyard with a plant dedicated to the construction of boats over 45 feet that will be inaugurated in spring this year.  “This growth process is the result of a long-term vision that has involved bold decisions and strategic investments with people and the company at the centre, with a significant ESG – Environmental, Social and Governance – approach. Sustainability also means people, production processes, supplies, and the development of existing products and new ranges”, says Matteo Magni, Chairman of Sacs Tecnorib.  “We are proud of these figures achieved, thanks to a broad product range and a strengthened distribution network that now includes 67 sales outlets worldwide. The new X tender line, which joins the J, the collaboration with Mansory that will give rise to a custom edition of Pirelli 42, together with the Strider and Pirelli speedboats lines, allow us to meet the needs of a wide range of customers with exclusive maxiribs and tenders from 2.5 up to 18 metres, in addition to Rebel with boats with rib family feeling but yacht characteristics”, adds Gianni De Bonis, CEO.

Equipped with new intelligent technology features and designed for enhanced sustainability, the IPS Professional platform delivers exceptional efficiency, with users experiencing up to 30% reduction in fuel consumption and emissions.  “When adopting new solutions into superyachts, we must always consider the experience of owners and the captain. The IPS Professional Platform not only delivers new levels of efficiency and flexibility but also elevates the yachting experience through the fully integrated helm-to-propeller platform. Intelligent features combined with the platform’s unique design provide additional comfort and peace of mind,” said Johan Inden, President of Volvo Penta Marine. “Our collaboration with Sanlorenzo marks a new journey towards decarbonization in the yachting sector. Sessa New United States Service Office

Celebrating a year marked by great achievements, including the acquisition by Intech Boating, an unprecedented operation in the nautical sector, Sessa Marine has shown that more than 65 years of tradition in the market, combined with the search for innovation and multiculturalism, are capable of strengthening the brand and making it stand out in the global nautical sector.  For 2024, the shipyard announces its return to the North American market, with Sessa Marine US, located in the city of Aventura, Florida, which will also be responsible for marketing and distributing the brand's products to the Caribbean market. Leading the new Sessa Marine US operation are executives Vanderlei Pallhano and Guilherme M. de Lima, partners in the new Sessa Marine and Intech Boating global project, and Marcelo Puscar, responsible for managing the American project. In addition to a service office for relationships with clients and prospects, the new unit will also have a structure and staff to support the service and maintenance of the boats. As part of this strategy, next February Sessa Marine will exhibit two boats at the Miami Boat Show, through new commercial partners.  With the reopening of this market, the expectation is that vessels sold in the region will account for 30% of the group's turnover this year. The operation is already underway with nine new Sessa units arriving on American soil by the end of January. These are the C36 IB, C36 OB, C40, C44, F42, and F48 models, manufactured at the shipyard's Brazilian plant. "We are excited to announce a significant milestone in our journey towards global expansion and restructuring at Sessa Marine. It is the beginning of a new phase focused on innovation and growth. This milestone directs our positioning to reaffirm our commitment to offering a unique and innovative experience for our customers. Certainly, many opportunities lie ahead and, consequently, will have a positive impact on the global nautical industry," says José A. Galizio Neto, president of the Sessa Group.  This new project is the result of the acquisition, in May 2023, of the brand by the Brazilian shipyard Intech Boating, which also added to the company a new board of directors made up of managers with experience in various segments and international markets. In addition to the achievements of 2023, the expansion of the Brazilian factory, located in the city of Palhoça (Santa Catarina), which opened in December 2023, reflects the brand's ongoing commitment to offering quality and sophistication to lovers of luxury boats. "We aim to continue the tradition of excellence and unique design for which Sessa Marine is renowned. For this phase, we will be integrating all the brand's operations, as well as planning the introduction of new product lines, not only from Sessa Marine but also from the brands belonging to the group, such as Intech Professional Boats and Key Largo. Processes that take into account the environment, sustainable development, and governance are also on our radar, as well as expansion into potential markets that have not yet been explored," adds Galízio.

Azimut-Benetti Group 24th Number One in Global Order Book

The company led by the Vitelli family is confirmed as the world's leading yacht manufacturer, with a 14% share of the world market, a 23% increase in production value and Ebitda up by 50%.  The Azimut|Benetti Group retains its position as the world's leading manufacturer of yachts over 24 meters, firmly securing its top spot in the Global Order Book edited by Boat International magazine. This book annually collects and analyses data from 177 shipyards worldwide. The 2024 edition awards the Group first place for both the number of units under construction and the cumulative length of projects: 167 yachts totalling 6014 meters, representing 14% of the world market examined by Boat International. These figures are corroborated by the Group's record results for the financial year ending August 31st, 2023. Production value grew by over 23% compared to the previous year, and Ebitda increased by 50%. The Group's resilience is further demonstrated by the consistent growth in production value, nearly doubling in the last five years — from 700 million to 1.3 billion euros — and the order portfolio extending until 2027. This success is a testament to the market's preference for the Group's stylistic and technological solutions, as well as its focus on fuel consumption and environmental impact.  These numbers, supported by excellent capital and financial solidity, enable the company to invest 150 million euros over the next three years. This commitment is accompanied by the Group's dedication to research and development, specifically focusing on solutions to reduce environmental impact. Today, the Group proudly announces leading results in the boating industry for lowering CO2 emissions. This includes the first-of-its-kind agreement in the sector for the use of HVO biofuel. Encouraged by these results, the Group is actively promoting the development of a public index to measure yacht efficiency, in collaboration with Lloyd's Register and the Superyacht Eco Association.  The extraordinary longevity of the Shipyard’s leading position can be traced to the status of private family company of Azimut|Benetti Group, led by the Vitelli family together with two quality minority shareholders – PIF and TIP – who hold a stimulus and control function: since its foundation, the ownership has pursued a coherent, resilient and sustainable business model, which is a long-term strategy focused on customer experience, constant product innovation and care for people. With the recent generational change - President Giovanna Vitelli taking the helm - the Group has undertaken a path of evolution that aims to further develop its managerial culture and governance, respecting the entrepreneurial DNA that continues to spur the success of the Company with rapid decision-making, a calibrated approach to growth and investments, and attention to the wellbeing of workers.  These traits translate into a strategic plan based on three pillars: the evolution of the product in terms of design and sustainability, the development of services through the Lusben and Yachtique brands, and the nourishing of talent.  The key contributor to the Group’s first place in the Global Order Book ranking is the success of the models by Azimut and Benetti: cutting-edge concepts that anticipate owners' desires and industry trends time after time. The creation of new lifestyles on board and the reduction of CO2 emissions and energy consumption are the guiding principles of the Group's product philosophy, both of which are reflected in the Azimut and Benetti yachts consistently with the values of the two brands.  Azimut explores new frontiers in architecture, positioning itself as the design hub that enriches the yachting world with the creativity of various contributors from different sectors. The most recent collaboration with Matteo Thun, for instance, introduces a new conscious design concept that respects the interconnected relationship between people, yacht, and the environment.  Furthermore, the brand is a pioneer in the development of solutions to reduce emissions integrating high-efficiency hulls, the extensive use of carbon, and innovative propulsion systems. Today, over half of Azimut's fleet is made up of Low Emission Yachts, which guarantee a reduction in emissions of up to 30%. In the spring of 2024, the Shipyard will present its first hybrid Series and the most efficient ever built: Seadeck.  Benetti reinvents the concept of iconic models through collaborations with internationally renowned architects, such as Bonetti/Kozerski Architecture, notable for their recent Pace Gallery project in New York. These collaborations aim to reinterpret classic design language, incorporating sophisticated influences from the realms of architecture, fashion design, and art. One of the most influential contemporary stylistic innovations introduced by Benetti is the Oasis Deck®, a true revolution in the concept of the beach area. For the first time, it transforms the aft deck into a sea oasis, providing an experience in close contact with nature.  Currently, the Shipyard offers almost its entire range with hybrid systems. The Benetti B.Yond has been recognized as the greenest model in its category, achieving a significant reduction in CO2 emissions (up to 24%) and NOx emissions (up to 85%). The next objective is to further optimize consumption and emissions generated by onboard systems. This issue is particularly relevant to larger boats, which spend approximately 90% of their time at anchor. Benetti has begun addressing this by developing solutions such as the “Zero-Emission Hotel Mode,” powered by fuel cells and advanced power management systems. These solutions include measures that can reduce air conditioning energy consumption by up to 50%.  The results achieved by Azimut and Benetti demonstrate a commitment to implementing green solutions on a broad scale, not just on one-off prototype models. By combining future-oriented research with the implementation of the best available and effective solutions today, the Group aims for the greatest possible impact in the short, medium, and long terms.  The Group's activities are guided by its determination to lead the sector towards a more conscious and scientific approach to the topic of environmental sustainability, while promoting greater transparency in communication. With this objective, Azimut, together with Lloyd's Register, one of the main classification bodies in the maritime sector, conducted a consumption and emissions certification plan in the summer of 2023, which led to the definition of an objective and comparable Carbon Emission Index, which the Superyacht Eco Association used to extend the SEA Index to yachts under 24m, the most widespread category of yachts in our seas and the one involving the greatest number of owners, with the ambition of starting an unprecedented movement.  In 2023, the Group signed the first agreement in the sector with Eni Live for the replacement of all fossil fuels used by the Group for sea trials, tests, and prototype transfers with HVO biodiesel. HVO biodiesel is a biofuel made from renewable raw materials*, allowing a reduction in CO2 emissions by up to 90% compared to the reference fossil mix, depending on the materials used for its production**. According to the agreement signed with Eni Live, the Group will purchase approximately 700,000 liters of HVO starting this year, thereby preventing the release of up to 1,800 tons of CO2 into the environment. This reduction is equivalent to preventing the emissions from about 1,800 flights from Frankfurt to New York.  Finally, all the Group's offices operate with the aim of reducing the environmental impact from all sources: the production sites will use renewable sources to cover approximately 50% of their energy requirements by 2026 and, with an eye to developing an increasingly circular economy, projects have been initiated to recover fiberglass, wood and other residual material.

Bavaria Yachts Returning CEO

Michael Müller is once again taking the helm at Bavaria Yachts and has been appointed new CEO by the shipyard's advisory board. Together with Managing Directors Norbert Leifeld (COO) and Thorsten Gatz (CFO), Michael Müller (CEO) will lead the successful shipyard near Würzburg and keep it on course for success with its almost 700 experienced employees. Michael Müller was already successfully active as CEO at Bavaria Yachts from 2019 to 2021 and also knows the company from the perspective of an advisory board member. In 2020, Michael Müller launched two important new highlights in the model range with the premiere of the Bavaria SR41 in the motorboat segment and the introduction of the Bavaria C42 in the sailing yacht segment. Both yachts were honoured with two of the most important awards in the yacht industry and are now among the many bestsellers at Bavaria Yachts. In 2021, he handed over the reins to Marc Diening, who as CEO steered Bavaria through the rough seas of the Covid crisis and significantly increased the profitability of Bavaria Yachts despite material shortages and price increases in the market. With the new sailing yacht Bavaria C46 and the motorboat Bavaria SR33, Diening has launched two yachts on the market this year that have been nominated for several awards. Marc Diening is now leaving his position as CEO of Bavaria Yachts at his own request.

Ferretti Group New Operational Headquarters

Ferretti Group continues to grow, not only in terms of turnover but also of production capacity and efficiency.  In a solemn ceremony attended by representatives of institutions and authorities from the shipbuilding and maritime sector, the new Ferretti Group Superyacht Yard was inaugurated today in Ancona.  The ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by Authorities and Ferretti Group CEO Alberto Galassi officially opened this new area in the Superyacht Yard, which is now ready to become an important strategic and operating hub. The building located in Via Enrico Mattei has been extensively refurbished to create a modern, functional environment that will be the new home of the management team, the design and planning office, and the entire department dedicated to aluminium and steel boats.  “2023 is an important year for us, one packed with new developments and even more growth: the dual listing in Milan and Hong Kong, the Ravenna shipyard acquisition and today, here in Ancona, a new space that speaks to the future and to italian luxury,” said Ferretti Group CEO Alberto Galassi. “This new area, which completes the Ferretti Group Superyacht Yard, is another step forward for our research into technology and style. It is where our employees will find the ideal environment to fully express their outstanding skills, and where our owners can come to choose the most beautiful boats in the world. Because this is where the dreams of yachting enthusiasts come true.”  The area extends across a total of 4,200 square metres, of which 3,000 sqm of office space, and will be home to the technical office, project managers, project architects, the purchasing office, planning and control, logistics, production management, the construction project engineer and the boat foremen, as well as a spacious, elegant reception area for customers.  The new spaces, the result of work to extend and redevelop an existing building and the Ancona shipbuilding district, take their inspiration from the prestigious boats built by Ferretti Group. The design of the interiors reflects the approach to customisation applied to the yachts, starting with the materials used, such as fine leather, wood and marble. Each space is personalised and loving care is lavished on every single detail, from the hand rails to the model boat display cases.  The Ancona shipyard, which covers a total surface area of over 80,000 square metres, is designed for the construction of pleasure vessels up to 90 metres in length.  This expansion is a key milestone in consolidating the Ferretti Group Superyacht Yard as a strategic multi-brand yacht construction hub. It’s where Ferretti Group builds CRN super and megayachts, the entire Custom Line range, Riva yachts over 50 metres and Pershing 140 units.  The shipyard vaunts a 670-tonne travel-lift, used to launch steel and aluminium yachts up to 50 metres in length.  Completing the production site are nine industrial sheds in which up to 24 superyachts can be built in parallel. These modern high-tech sheds all feature state-of-the-art air-extraction, compressed-air and centralised technical-gas systems, heating and power-generation systems, and two overhead cranes for handling and installing materials on board.  The stretch of water that opens out in front is a unique space and a precious resource – a gateway to the Adriatic and a private tourist marina to full effect. Extending 250 metres along the coast, it provides large berths for fitting out and finishing up to 15 superyachts at once, and for tests and inspections through to the delivery of each pleasure boat and superyacht.  On the sustainability and environmental front, a modern tri-generation plant has been producing electric, heat and cooling power for a number of years now at the Ferretti Group Superyacht Yard in Ancona.

Maritimo With Two Entries at Rolex Sydney Hobart 2023

Representing the Gold Coast and Queensland in the iconic 2023 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, sailing yachts Maritimo Racing has entered two of its yachts, Maritimo 52, a TP 52 and Maritimo 54, a Schumacher 54. Maritimo is the only team with two entries in the event.  On Boxing Day, December 26, both yachts, Maritimo 52 and Maritimo 54 will line up on the start line of the epic blue water race, which is celebrating its 78th edition this year with a strong fleet of 113 yachts.  The 628 nautical mile course is often described as the most gruelling ocean race in the world, attracting sailors from around the world and the cream of Australian entries.  Maritimo 52 will compete in the 52-foot grand prix racing yachts class, against 12 other contenders, including two champion internationals.  Maritimo is unique as the only luxury motor yacht builder in the world with a dedicated racing division and world championship off shore powerboat race team all in-house.  The 15.85-metre yacht is a meticulously refurbished, Reichel Pugh-designed TP52, a champion racing yacht brought to Australia from Mexico.  The TP52 was originally designed for the Transpac Race from Los Angeles to Honolulu and is a lean, light-weight yacht with few creature comforts for crew. There are around eighty of these carbon fibre yachts racing in all parts of the world, and they are extremely competitive. There are seven racing in this year’s Rolex Sydney Hobart.  The TPs have dominated Australian ocean racing including the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race in recent times and seem to enjoy a sweet spot under the IRC Handicap Rule that determines the overall winner of the Race.  Maritimo founder, Bill Barry-Cotter could see the untapped potential in the TP52 he located in Fiji which was then transported to Maritimo’s Coomera headquarters where the yacht underwent a thorough refit, including new sails and all navigation equipment to bring her up to the latest safety and racing standards. The TP52 was withdrawn from the 2022 race due to damage suffered in the delivery sail down from the Gold Coast. 2023 sees Maritimo teams raring to compete.  Maritimo is a proudly-Australian manufacturer and exporter of premium, long-range motor yachts, sending 60 percent of its vessel to dealerships in New Zealand, North America, South East Asia and Europe.  The Majority of Maritimos destined for NZ travel across the Tasman on their own hulls, which is testament to their superior offshore cruising capabilities.  In 2023, Maritimo celebrates 20 years as one of Australia’s most successful and prestigious Luxury Motor Yacht Manufacturers.  “We are extremely proud to be a Gold Coast manufacturer, with more than 330+ employees and motor yachts that are prized around the world,” states Tom.  “A testament to the skills and craftsmanship of our tradespeople, our two Maritimo sailing yachts will be flying the flag for the Gold Coast in the 2023 Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race.”  Michael Spies, veteran of 44 Rolex Sydney Hobart Race is at the helm of Maritimo 52 and Bill Barry-Cotter’s brother, Kendal, is at the helm of Maritimo 54. Maritimo 54’s crew will have 119 Rolex Sydney Hobart Races chalked up.  The Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race has become an icon of Australia’s summer sport, ranking among such popular national spectator events as the Melbourne Cup, the Australian Open tennis and the Boxing Day cricket test. The Race start at 1pm Boxing Day on Sydney Harbour attracts thousands of pleasure craft and many thousands of spectators around the foreshores.

Nordhavn Named Yacht of the Year

Nordhavn’s Taiwanese partner factory Ta Shing has earned the 2024 Taiwan Yacht of the Year award by the Taiwan Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME), for Nordhavn 7101 Luna. Presented each year for the most creative and innovative yacht built in Taiwan, Ta Shing becomes the 15th different builder to be presented with the award since the design competition’s inception in 1952. The Taiwanese chapter of SNAME originally created the contest in an effort to promote Taiwanese based boat builders and manufacturers. Given the country’s place as the world’s fifth largest producer of yachts, there is no shortage of global brands eligible to compete for Yacht of the Year (and its sister design competition Boat of the Year).  This marks the first time Ta Shing has entered the awards, going up against Taiwan’s bigger shipyards and established brands. “It is truly an honor,” said Mingway Yu, purchasing manager at Ta Shing. “Even though this is our first participation in the competition, the design prowess of Nordhavn’s team, and building capabilities of Ta Shing seemed to have left a lasting impression on the judges.”  The judging panel is comprised of a who’s who in Taiwanese naval architecture and engineering including the professor of systems and naval mechatronic engineering of National Cheng Kung University, the president of the Taiwan Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, and the head engineer of Ship and Ocean Industries research and design center.  “We couldn’t be more proud of this award and of Ta Shing,” said Nordhavn president Dan Streech. “The collaboration between our two companies produced a true masterpiece with Luna and we are pleased the judges recognized that.”  A ceremony and awards presentation will be held in Kaohsiung next spring, where Yu, along with Ta Shing vice president BK Kuo, will receive the Yacht of the Year award on behalf of the company.

Riviera Praises Team for 2023

Riviera owner Rodney Longhurst and CEO Wes Moxey have credited the tireless effort and dedication of their team for Riviera’s global success as a builder of premium luxury motor yachts.  Speaking to the 900-strong team at the year-end celebrations on the Gold Coast, Mr Longhurst said he was absolutely committed to the continued investment in his people, technologies and their ever-expanding facility.  “Our extraordinary success goes beyond Queensland, beyond Australia. Our owners around the world love what our team is designing and creating, but most of all they love our innovation, constant refinement and our commitment to them, allowing them to enjoy their best boating experience possible,” he said.  “That’s why we are always investing in you, our people, why we continue to invest in new technologies, and our facility, so that we can continue to be the very best.”  At the start of the year, Riviera’s highly awarded apprenticeship program welcomed 29 talented young apprentices and 10 enthusiastic mature-age apprentices. Mr Moxey, whose career with Riviera spans almost 40 years, said he was thrilled to see the program continue to flourish. “I’m proud to see our apprenticeship program go from strength to strength. In May, our apprentice Matthaus Mayer was named Queensland Apprentice of the Year at the distinguished Australian Marine Industry Awards. This achievement is testament to the great mentorship of our highly experienced team and the level of our peerless craftsmanship,” he said.  In 2023, Riviera was announced as the Large Employer of the Year for the Southeast region, in the Queensland Training Awards. The award was attributed to Riviera’s unique program for personal and career development in which master craftspeople and senior management share their knowledge, experience, and skills, ensuring high retention rates across the business.  “Riviera’s vision and exceptional craftsmanship are reflected in our fleet of superb motor yachts that today are admired on the great waterways of the world. Our extraordinary team can all be extremely proud of our achievements,” Mr Moxey said.  The first international boat show of the year for Riviera was the Miami International Boat Show in February.  “The impressive 46 Sports Motor Yacht had her Americas premiere in Miami,” said Mr Longhurst. “We followed this with the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show in May when we celebrated the world premiere of the magnificent 585 SUV, and where she was admired for her innovative design, meticulous engineering, and luxurious appointments and finishes. Australia’s finest fleet was displayed in grand style for the record number of visitors to our display where we showcased 11 yachts from our 39 to 78 feet collection.”  Also in May, Riviera hosted their exclusive owners Festival of Boating where owners were inspired by an extensive boating education program and enjoyed a social events calendar including the glittering Grand Table dinners.  The prestigious Cannes Yachting Festival in France and the European Premiere of the 465 SUV and 4600 Sport Yacht Platinum Edition were held in September.  At the world’s largest in-water boat show, the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show in Florida in October, Riviera held their largest showcase outside of Australia with 11 yachts on display including the Americas Premiere of the brilliant 585 SUV.  During the Fort Lauderdale Show, Riviera presented the coveted International Dealer of the Year, Service, Sales and Event Excellence awards for representatives outside of Australia and New Zealand.  “Our position in the global boating industry continues to grow. After 43 years and the launching of almost 6,000 motor yachts, Riviera is regarded internationally as one of the world’s leading motor yacht builders. We exported over 60 percent of our yachts in 2023 to the Americas, New Zealand, Europe, the Middle East and Asia,” Mr Longhurst said.  “The northern summer was a time for our Riviera family in Europe and the Americas to shine and we witnessed some spectacular events including a rendezvous for 42 yachts in picturesque Roche Harbour on San Juan Island in Washington State, and a Christmas in July party of epic proportions in the British Virgin Islands.”  Riviera’s exclusive R Marine dealership network around Australia and in New Zealand also hosted a wonderful array of owner events. These ranged from boating education programs to casual cocktails on the dock, fishing tournaments, fabulous extended cruises in company and an Australian record raft up of 79 yachts in Perth earlier this month.  Finally, this month marks the world premiere of the magnificent 58 Sports Motor Yacht. We hosted an exclusive launch for invited guests who are the first in line for the future delivery of their new 58 SMYs. The 58 will have her first boat show premiere in February 2024 in Miami.  “In a year of great change around the world, I am so very proud of our global team for their commitment to excellence. I constantly admire their passion and incredible work. We are inspired by the global Riviera family of motor yacht owners and we are grateful for their trust. They excite us every day to be different and better,” Mr Longhurst said.

Sanlorenzo Signs Memorandum of Agreement with Nautor Swan

Sanlorenzo Group and Nautor Swan Group have announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding – encompassing an exclusivity period – to evaluate joint strategic opportunities between the two yacht builders, which specialise in motor and sailing yachts respectively. Earlier this month, Sanlorenzo announced the acquisition of Simpson Marine, Asia’s largest yacht dealer.  Founded in 1958, Sanlorenzo and its sister brand Bluegame produce motor yachts from 42ft to megayachts of 73m. Italian Massimo Perotti, Chairman and CEO of Sanlorenzo, which he bought in 2005, said the addition of Swan would create a high-end portfolio of brands.  “This transaction, if carried out, would allow Sanlorenzo to extend its presence into the high-end yachting industry, preserving Swan’s long-lasting expertise and experience, which provide Sanlorenzo with unique heritage,” Perotti said. “The combination of these brands within the same group would create a unique maison of motor and sail yachts at the top end of the nautical competitive landscape.”  Nautor Swan, founded in 1966, builds sailing monohulls from the Swan 48 to the Swan 128 in its Swan Maxi line, with most of its yachts built in Finland. The 43ft Swan Shadow and OverShadow motor yachts produced in Italy are among exceptions.  Italian Leonardo Ferragamo, Nautor Swan’s Chairman, bought the shipyard in 1998 and currently owns it through his company Sawa.  “Swan has a legacy of globally unmatched product excellence in the high-end sailing yachting industry,” Ferragamo said.  “A strategic partnership with Sanlorenzo Group would offer opportunities to move forward on this virtuous path with joint investments in innovative technologies, sustainability and a more extensive service network for our customers globally. A journey with one of the most qualified groups in the yachting arena would strengthen our long-term vision, preserving the Swan brand’s unique values.”  In 2021, Sanlorenzo Group indicated an interest in buying a sailing yacht brand when it announced a joint-venture with Ferretti Group to buy Perini Navi, before the latter was eventually acquired by The Italian Sea Group.

Sanlorenzo Acquires Simpson Marine

Sanlorenzo signed a binding agreement on December 7 to acquire 95 per cent of share capital of the Simpson Marine Group from Mike Simpson, with a payment of US$10 million plus an earn-out up to US$7 million calculated on the net profit for the 2023 fiscal year.  Prior to the Sanlorenzo takeover, expected to close in the first quarter of 2024, Simpson Marine will make a distribution from retained earnings in favour of Mike Simpson. Further details on financials of the target perimeter will follow upon closing and determination of the earn-out amount based on 2023 full-year results.  Simpson Marine was founded by Mike Simpson in 1984 and has represented Sanlorenzo in Asia since 2015.  Mike Simpson said: “I’m delighted to have signed this agreement with Sanlorenzo. I’ve known Massimo Perotti, the principal shareholder and Chairman of Sanlorenzo, for nearly 40 years and have the greatest respect for his success in building Sanlorenzo into the powerhouse it has become in the world of luxury yachts.  “This sale to Sanlorenzo provides an opportunity for Simpson Marine to build on their past success in the region and share in Sanlorenzo’s ambitious plans for further expansion throughout APAC and beyond after they take over control next year.  “We have been selling, servicing, chartering and managing yachts in Asia for nearly 40 years and have built up a wealth of experience and expertise in the region. My teams located in 12 offices around Asia now have the opportunity of working with Sanlorenzo to take Simpson Marine and our range of services to the next level in the Asia-Pacific and globally.”  The acquisition will enable Sanlorenzo to increase its direct presence in the strategically important APAC region, maintaining and developing Simpson Marine’s connections, expertise and experience. Massimo Perotti, Executive Chairman of Sanlorenzo, said: “We’re very pleased to have signed this agreement with Mike Simpson of Simpson Marine. This is an important step for Sanlorenzo as we continue to expand our business globally.  “Simpson Marine is a well-established and widely respected company in the APAC region with tremendous potential for further expansion, and we believe that this acquisition will enable us to further develop our business in this strategically important market.  “Under Mike Simpson’s leadership, Simpson Marine has gained a strong reputation among customers and industry peers, having developed a highly loyal team of around 140 professionals who are among the best in their respective fields, making it a sound and promising investment in line with our long-term strategic vision.”  Once the sale of Simpson Marine has been finalised in 2024, Sanlorenzo’s next steps will include deployment of the strategic alignment plan and regional expansion scheme for the Simpson Marine portfolio of brands and services.

Sunreef Yachts CEO Francis Lapp has joined the ongoing expedition in Greenland. The renowned explorer spearheads the mission, evaluating global environmental changes with a primary focus on climate change. The expedition aims to raise awareness about environmental issues and inspire individuals worldwide to pursue their exploration aspirations.  "I decided to participate in this remarkable expedition with the dual purpose of being a part of the extraordinary exploration in Greenland and personally assessing the current state of the planet. This experience has served as a profound motivation for me to continue to act for a sustainable future within the yachting industry." Francis Lapp, Sunreef Yachts CEO & Founder.  “Guiding my sailing vessel Pangaea, I return to iconic and wild locations to witness changes, fulfill more desires on my adventurer's bucket list, and inspire people to act on their passions. Greenland, therefore, emerges as the perfect starting point for this new adventure.

Sunseeker Longest Serving Employee Celebrates 45 Years

Sunseeker International proudly marks a significant milestone as Dennis ‘Digger’ Barnes, Sunseeker's first apprentice and longest-serving employee, celebrates an extraordinary 45 years of commitment and contribution to the iconic boatbuilding brand.  On his inaugural day at Sunseeker in 1978, Dennis received clock card number 16, signalling the beginning of a remarkable journey. Joining as a Trainee Engineer under the guidance of the then-28-year-old John Braithwaite, Dennis's early impact was evident as he quickly impressed the Braithwaite family with his engineering acumen. This was at a time when marine apprenticeships only existed for larger commercial ships in East Yorkshire, England. Therefore, Dennis was encouraged to pursue a 'Heavy Vehicle Engineering' course. Dennis's journey reflects a unique era when marine apprenticeships were a rarity.  With a current workforce of 2,200 people, Dennis now serves as a Lifecycle Manager, overseeing quality assurance. Over the course of his 45-year tenure, he has generously shared his wealth of boat building knowledge with hundreds of apprentices and colleagues.  Dennis's journey began when Sunseeker produced just one boat per week at the West Quay Road workshop. Today, the original shipyard has expanded sixfold since the late 1960s, evolving into a critical site for testing and finishing yachts before they embark on a global journey to owners.  Dennis's career trajectory, from a Trainee Engineer to a Foreman in 1988 and subsequently a Manager at Willis Way, is a testament to his dedication and leadership. In 1987, the site produced up to 28 boats per month. By 1999, Dennis was appointed Site Manager. Today, Willis Way is a dedicated 55-foot build facility for Superhawk, Predator, and Sport Yacht models.  One of the standout moments in Dennis's career occurred at Willis Way when he and his team successfully delivered one 60-foot yacht every five days to meet unprecedented demand for the Manhattan 60. This ambitious project resulted in the construction of 69 boats in just 18 months, a feat Dennis considers the pinnacle of his career.  "The Manhattan 60 project is my proudest achievement in my 45-year career," says Dennis.  In early 2000, Dennis established the first formal marine apprenticeship scheme alongside two former Sunseeker employees and a local college. The award-winning Sunseeker apprenticeship programme known today is the result of Dennis' blueprint in training, ensuring a legacy of skilled boat builders.  Commenting on the programme, Dennis said: “Teaching people and passing the knowledge that I’ve learned over the years to other people so that they can carry on what we’ve got at Sunseeker, has inspired me to stay at Sunseeker for 45 years.”  In 2021, Dennis's role evolved to Lifecycle Manager, reflecting his expertise in planning, people management, production engineering, and build processes. Throughout his journey, Dennis has been instrumental in establishing production practices and departments focused on product quality.  Dennis recalls that Robert had a dream to build a boat business that is known worldwide and brings wealth to Poole. In the 45 years that Dennis has worked at Sunseeker, the business has grown exponentially. Dennis acknowledges the visionary dream of founder Robert Braithwaite, stating, "I wouldn't be where I am today and with the knowledge I have without the two Braithwaite brothers."  As Dennis Barnes reaches this significant 45-year milestone, Sunseeker celebrates not just an individual career but a legacy of excellence and commitment that has shaped the success of the renowned boatbuilding brand.

Tankoa Obtains Concession of Ex-Privilege Civitavecchia Yard

The Genoa-based boutique shipyard, Tankoa Yachts, is pleased to officially confirm the concession of the "Ex Privilege" area within the Port of Civitavecchia. This is part of Tankoa’s plan to establish a new and modern center for naval shipbuilding.  This project is integral to the shipyard's growth strategy, as a prominent player in the construction and sale of high-quality luxury yachts from 40 meters and above. Tankoa has experienced consistent growth in recent years, necessitating the expansion of its facilities. In 2021, the Genoa-based shipyard identified Civitavecchia as one of the potential ideal locations for the production activities of metalworking, hulls, superstructures, assembly, and pre-assembly of all yachts. The final assembly will remain the responsibility of the historic Genoa shipyard.  Upon reaching full capacity, Tankoa will produce four yachts per year, each exceeding 40 meters in size. Additionally, further activities are planned for the Civitavecchia site, including refit operations if a waterfront area for hauling and launching yachts becomes available.  This operation involves an initial investment of 3 million euros, focusing on the commencement of steel and aluminum metalworking activities, as well as pre-assembly. This initial investment segment aims to plan and execute the growth of the local business cluster that already possesses the know-how for such activities.  "Our vision for Civitavecchia is to manufacture hulls and internalize part of the welding activities. Tasks that have been outsourced until now can be brought in-house, allowing us to have direct control over the quality of the work," explained Guido Orsi, Tankoa's Marketing Manager. "In Civitavecchia, we will begin operations almost immediately on one-third of the available space in the former Privilege area.”  Among the planned infrastructural interventions, the construction of a slipway and a haulage and launching basin are notable, intended for the installation of a travel lift with a capacity of 500-600 tonnes for yachts up to 60 meters in length. For larger yachts, Tankoa will utilize the existing 92-meter floating dry dock.  Regarding employment plans, personnel growth is anticipated for various company functions and skilled labor in collaboration with Tankoa's partners, reaching a total of 250-350 employees at full capacity over the next 5 years.  Tankoa's initiative in Civitavecchia is based on the assessment of the area's potential for specific shipbuilding processes. Geographically and territorially, Civitavecchia aligns as a natural extension of the activities that have developed in the last 150 years in the region between Livorno and Genoa, which concentrates over 30% of the world's production of megayachts and hosts the largest cluster of the global yachting industry.

Wider Agreement Between Marcello Maggi and Norberto Ferretti

The successful growth path of Wider continues, characterized not only by investments in new products and industrial sites but also by a significant strengthening of the shipyard's governance. Marcello Maggi, President of W-Fin Sarl, the holding company that owns 100% of Wider's capital, has reinforced the decision-making structure by renewing the Board of Directors.  This move by Maggi is the result of an important agreement reached with Norberto Ferretti, who now assumes the prestigious position of Honorary President of the shipyard. Leading the new Board of Directors is Massimo Iacono, a figure already present in the previous executive body.  The collaboration with Norberto Ferretti represents a significant enhancement in terms of capabilities and expertise, in line with the relaunch and development goals outlined by Marcello Maggi and the company's CEO, also confirmed in the new Board, Fabio Fraternale.  Co-founder in 1968 – along with his brother Alessandro – of the renowned Ferretti Yachts brand, Norberto Ferretti brings with him vast experience that will contribute decisively to the development of future yachts, supporting Marcello Maggi within the Product Development Committee, as well as in the future growth strategies of the shipyard.  "I am very happy that our paths cross again," said Marcello Maggi, "Norberto's know-how in product development is invaluable, and his authoritative presence confirms the relevance of the Wider brand, which I have firmly focused on, within the international yachting market.”  "What fascinates me most about Wider is its pioneering side. Here, tomorrow is not considered an uncertainty but a starting point," commented Norberto Ferretti. "The relaunch path taken in recent years is truly stimulating; I am ready to contribute to shaping the products and technologies of the shipyard's future.”  "I am very pleased with the presence of Norberto Ferretti, who, in my previous experience in the eponymous group, has been a solid reference point and an important guide," stated Fabio Fraternale, CEO of Wider.  2024 will be a year full of news for Wider, which is preparing for the launch of two highly anticipated new models: the WiderCat 92, a catamaran designed by the creativity of Luca Dini and powered by avant-garde serial hybrid propulsion, and the provocative WiLder 60, born from Wider Centro Stile and ready to offer exciting sailing experiences.
