Azimut R and D Experience Day

There's a reason why many of the innovations developed at the Azimut Research and Development Center have the word "easy" in their names. To discover what's behind it, all you have to do is try the technological systems available on Azimut boats. That's what numerous specialized journalists from France, Germany, England, Slovenia, Croatia and Italy were able to do thanks to their invitation to the first Azimut R&D Experience Day. During the tests they were able to see how Azimut's exclusive technological devices make navigation simpler and more comfortable and how the onboard experience can become more laid-back and relaxed. "Made in Azimut" technology always places itself at the service of owners' safety and comfort.

Ferretti Group Creates Ferretti Group Brazil

The Ferretti Group, a world leader within the sphere of the design, construction and sale of motoryachts encompassing a unique portfolio of some of the most exclusive brands in the nautical world, has signed an agreement with Spirit, a Brazilian company based in Sao Paolo, operating within the production and sale of new and pre-owned yachts. The agreement was announced, during the Rio Boat Show 2010, at which the Ferretti Group was present from 8th to 14th April with 6 yachts displayed on a prestigious stand set out over an impressive 210 m². The agreement provides that the sale and after sales assistance of all Ferretti Group brand yachts on the Brazilian market will now be managed by Marcio Latorre Christiansen, founder and CEO of Spirit, under the new brand name Ferrettigroup Brasil, thus strengthening the network of services offered to clients. Hence, Ferrettigroup Brasil will be a platform for developing the distribution and services supporting Ferretti Group yachts on the Brazilian market, thus contributing to the further expansion of the Group’s business in this country. In particular, Ferrettigroup Brasil has significant strategic value, in that it will be able to count on the consolidated skills of the Ferretti Group within the sphere of designing and producing motoryachts on the one hand, and on Spirit’s specific know-how regarding production, sales and after sales services in Brazil, on the other. Moreover, this working relationship also provides for the opening, by Ferrettigroup Brasil, of a prestigious showroom by the end of June 2010. Set out over more than 1000m² at the exclusive, luxury mall in Sao Paolo, ‘Shopping Center Cidade Jardim’, it will display both Ferretti Group yachts and a fine selection of luxury items, such as cars, helicopters and watches produced by some of the most prestigious brands in the world. The agreement between the two Groups, which have been working together since 1989, confirms the Ferretti Group’s interest in this country. Indeed, it is one of the most important markets in the world, with excellent potential and also a continuous incentive and natural outlet, full of prospects for development.

Marlow Yachts Ocean Challenge

The Ocean Challenge is open to all production yacht builders representing their products as long-distance passage makers. Marlow Yachts challenges any production builder in an epic voyage in the summer of 2010, from West Palm Beach, Florida, to Reykjavik, Iceland, non-stop, using only the advertised standard fuel capacity of currently offered vessels. Dependent upon chosen course, this voyage is as much as 3,500 miles offshore. Alternatively, the challengers may opt for a shorter voyage from West Palm Beach, Florida, to Gibraltar. No stops in Bermuda or Azores are permitted. This voyage, dependent upon route, is around 2,700 miles offshore. The first to arrive is the winner; though it can be clearly stated that all capable of either voyage are winners as well.

Moonen Makes Historic Passage

Etoile d'Azur, the seventh in the highly successful Moonen 84 series, crossed the Atlantic Ocean last December, from Gibraltar to Sint Maarten, via the Azores (3.350 nm). Delivered to her owner in May 2007, she is the first Moonen 84 to do so since the series was initiated in 2002, proving that this "pocket-size superyacht" has the range and reliability worthy of the name. Etoile left her homeport Monaco end of October 2009, stopping in Palma, Mallorca (350 nm), for two weeks for some work, then laid over in Gibraltar (450 nm) for fuelling (taking on extra portable tanks to extend her capacity, which turned out not to be needed). On the first, 1.000-nautical-mile, leg to the Azores Etoile encountered heavy weather, including 12 hours with occasional seas breaking over her. Her captain, Guillaume Bourhis, reported that she behaved well despite the seas. On the leg to Sint Maarten she had smoother seas and cruised the 2.350 nautical miles in 10 days. Overall, Etoile's performance and economy are impressive. On the first leg, with her engines purring at 1.320 rpm for 4 ½ days at an averages speed of 9.26 knots, she consumed 7.500 litres, or 7,5 litres/nautical mile (or 69,4 litres per hour). On the second leg, throttled back to 1.280 rpm for 10,5 days, she averaged 9,33 knots over 2.350 nautical miles, consuming 15.000 litres for an average of 6,4 litres/nautical mile (or 59,5 litres/hour). When she arrived in Sint Maarten, she still had 4.000 litres in her boat tanks and the spare tanks were still full.

The case studies presented showed what can be achieved when a yacht is placed in the right hands for a refit explains Mark Vermeulen, director operations at the Dutch Moonen Shipyards. Vermeulen also explained the capacity to rebuild both Moonen yachts and other premium quality superyachts was appreciated by all the attendees.

Despite the inclement weather conditions and fewer hook ups than last year’s tournament, a good time was had by all. The first night was registration and the Calcutta auction before the fleet set out the following day for the first day of fishing where they could stay overnight at an anchorage of their choice. On the second day of fishing, teams returned to base for the dock party. After the third day of fishing the event concluded with the formal function and prize giving. Project: Sunseeker 115 Predator

Following a design similar to the recently released current Sunseeker flagship the 130 Predator, the Poole based British boat builder presents the project of a slightly smaller 115 Predator. Similar to its bigger sister the 115 Predator will have a two and half deck plan, of what looks a hybrid between a flybridge and a more sport yacht. Again just as the 130, the 115 theme is about the main deck which gets to be very sleek and hardly noticeable outside. The 115 also features a wide full body forward deck, this enabling to use this space for a luxurious owner suite. Below accommodation will include other four double guest cabins, with two VIP suites located to midship, and crew quarters to fore for five persons. To aft the 115 will have a very large garage which can accommodate a large five metre tender, and two jet bikes. Estimated speed for the 115 Predator is for a max of thirty knots with twin engines totalling 5280hp. Range will be 1250 nautical miles at a 10 knots cruise.

INBUILD ~ Galeon 780 Crystal Part 1 of 9

After the positive comments we received for the first Inbuild section dedicated to the new Galeon 340 Fly, the Polish builder gives us the drift again showing us the building phase for its upcoming flagship the 780 Crystal. Galeon has been constantly growing up in sizes in recent years from the 530 launched in 2006, to the 640 for 2008, and the 700 Raptor as the fall of 2009. This is a growth in size of 25 feet in five years, which shows a huge development resolute from Galeon. While this going larger plan shows five years in the making this surely has started much before to the 2006 period. A company needs huge investments to go over the fifteen metres size, such as bigger building premises and also a much higher quality control which a more expensive boat usually demands. The 780 Crystal will be designed by British architect Tony Castro who since 2005 has been a household name at Straszyn, Poland. The above picture shows the construction of the model of the hull mould for the 780 Crystal and was taken in September 2009. This picture shows some things which will feature in the 780 like the big windows for the midship cabin, propeller tunnels, and Tony Castro warped shaped hull which will close to a medium Vee aft. From this the original hull mould will be made and then the first fiberglass unit of the 780 can be made.

News: Menorquin April 2010

PALMA BOAT SHOW
From the 24th of April until the 2nd of May all the professionals and amateurs visiting the Palma International Boat Show have an inevitable appointment with Menorquin’s boats. The shipyard’s team will be available to attend visitors during the whole week of the show, which has become one of the most important national Boat Shows. Because of its special link with the Balearic’s nautical culture, Menorquin are inspired by the emblematic LlaĂĽts and the shipyard’s headquarters are located in Menorca, a full support to the Palma Boat Show is given. Menorquin has opted to transfer three models from its cruising yachts range to the Palma Show: the MY 145, MY 120, and MY 100 all true icons of the Slowyachting sailing philosophy. As well as exhibiting these three models, Menorquin will be providing information to those interested in other Yacht models, or details about boats from any of their other three product ranges: Lläuts, Custom Yachts and Largo. The shipyard’s complete range of services will also be on display at the Palma Boat Show: Menorquin Charter; Menorquin Brokerage; Menorquin Share; and Menorquin Services, which this year has broadened the range of services it provides. In addition to the reparation, restoration and maintenance services, it now also offers services for the installation of equipment, supply of spare parts and accessories, moorings, logistics, insurance, and administration.

NEXT DESTINATION CROATIA & MOSCOW
Menorquin commences April with an intense burst of activity in its Boat Show programme. In the International sphere and almost in parallel, the Spanish shipyard will be participating at the 12th Croatia Boat Show, which takes place from the 10th to the 18th of April; and at the 18th Moscow International Boat & Yacht Show, from the 15th to the 18th of the same month. Menorquin will be represented in Split, the Croatian city which hosts the first of these Boat Shows by its distributor for the Adriatic, Brik Nautika. Menorquin will exhibit one of its longest models from its cruising yachts range, Menorquin Yachts 160. An offshore traditional yacht with all the features of larger vessels which the Shipyard combines to perfection with its own particular classic style. Menorquin is conscious that the Croatia boat show has become an important platform for the recreational sailing business and a reference point for enthusiasts who sail mainly in the Adriatic Sea. The characteristics of this central European coastline bear a great resemblance to those of our Mediterranean coast, a factor which is in tune with the classic style of the Menorquin boats and a propensity for peaceful sailing which identify the Shipyard: sailing at your own pace, enjoying sea life to the full, or in one word Slowyachting. Menorquin will also participate at the Moscow International Boat & Yacht Show to attend customers from the Russian market and promote boats through its distributor for this area, Concept Marine. The nautical market in Russia has experienced spectacular growth in the last five years, the number of imported boats increased considerably in 2009 and the number of Russian luxury yacht buyers has also risen, according to the Boat Show’s organizing body. With these market figures Russia stands out amongst the emerging countries where the development of the recreational sailing industry presents magnificent prospects for the future. Therefore Menorquin has included this destination in its programme of International Boat Shows for this season.

Powerboat GPS - 2010 Season

Following the news that Powerboat P1 Management Ltd cancelled the 2010 Season, we finally have some more information about this after the 12th April meeting between the parties in Villa Malpensa, Milan, Italy. The bad news is that Powerboat P1 Management will not promote this years season. The good one is that the UIM takes over as promoter of this superb competition and races will be business as usual. So far we have a full calendar in order with three Grand Prix of the Seas fully confirmed, and an other two just waiting full confirmation. If all these will be confirmed that means a total of ten races, as each Grand Prix delivers two events, the longer Endurance and the shorter Sprint, and five Powerpoles. That is the same as the very good 2009 season. In this new calendar here is also showing the return of the Malta Grand Prix which after six consecutive seasons looked like to be cancelled from the previous calendar. Now this is set up again, although other news sources are saying this to be in September, which makes a bit of sense considering the below provisional calendar looks more expensive with various up and down trips on the European continent.
Powerboat P1 2010 Calendar
7-9 May UKRAINE Yalta
11-13 June MALTA Valletta
16-18 July ITALY To be confirmed
6-8 August SWEDEN To be confirmed

New Model: Van Der Heijden 2000 Superior

Van Der Heijden presents the new 2000 Superior which is also the first in a new range, adding to the other four within this Dutch builder. Boat Review: Galeon 700 Raptor

Presentation
Flagships have always been the pinnacle of all the yacht brands, by which the smaller models are usually judged. While the big boat of the brand is only afforded by a small niche of persons it is very often an inspiration to buyers who choose a smaller model of the same brand. New bigger flagships also represent an improvement in quality which is afterwards transmitted to the rest of the fleet. When Galeon presented its new flagship the 700 Raptor in the Genoa show of 2009, it was surely a demonstration that the Polish builder and designer Tony Castro where pushing more modern looks which from followers a decade before today it makes them to be in line with the Western competition. Developed on an extended 640 Fly hull, Tony Castro presented an aggressive looking seventy one feet length over all sport yacht featuring all the latest comfort solutions. In some parts the 700 Raptor also exceeds the competition like its very clever single handed tender launch system, and the choice of a galley up or down, three or four cabin layout.
Accommodation
Choice is important in any fifteen metre plus yacht and Galeon gives two important layout options for both the lower and main deck. Choices give real freedom to customers and here the liberty is between three or four cabins below, and a galley up or down solution.
The 700 Raptor welcomes you aft with a two way entrance to the cockpit. In the middle aft deck and just away from the extended hard top is a central located two person sunpad. Underneath it is a tender garage which can be operated single handed. In the aft deck are also two L-shaped settees, for relaxing to port side with a low position table and for dining to starboard. Moving around the 700 Raptor is easy and a single step leads from the aft to the side decks. The side decks are extremely safe with the protection of moulded side bulwarks complemented by safety railings. To foredeck you get a two single person sunpads to both sides with an adjustable head rest. On the bow tip is the central positioned anchor winch with visible chain, and two hatches which open up to a well sized locker.
From the central of the main deck, going up two steps and into an innovative fully opening patio doors you enter the internal saloon living area. Here you have a galley bar combination to port side with three stools looking to the cockpit on the aft part. Opposite to this is a C-shaped settee complimented with a TV entertainment center. To fore part of the saloon you get the well designed helm station which features two luxury race car style adjustable bucket seats. With the three cabin, galley down choice this area actually changes the position of a larger C-shaped sofa to port, and a bar area with stools opposite. The saloon roof is for the major a tinted glass solid surface combination, which opens up for half its size.
Going down the central stairway leads you to the lower accommodation deck having a three or a hard to find for a sport yacht four cabin layout. The master stateroom is to midship with a queen sized double berth looking to the ships starboard side, a large en-suite shower head to aft, and a relaxing chaise lounge with breakfast table to port. To fore is the VIP cabin having a central located queen berth and en-suite shower head to port. The third cabin located to starboard comes with two single berths. This also features its own en-suite head. A fourth guest cabin with two L-shaped bunk berths is located to port side. The fourth cabin can be replaced with a more private galley down in the three cabins version of the 700 Raptor. An optional crew cabin for two with shower head can be located aft.
Performance
For the Galeon 700 Raptor, designer Tony Castro based himself on the 640 Fly underwater shape extending and warping it to a sixteen degrees medium Vee deadrise aft. The Galeon technical department also added the Humphree Interceptor System for easy to use trim. Powered by the large twin 1550hp MAN the 700 Raptor reaches a 40 knots top speed, while 1360hp engine give 36 knots max, and 1224hp deliver 34 knots. This is a remarkable high speed considering that here we are speaking of a standard line shaft propulsion system with props located in semi tunnels aft. Range is for a 380 nautical miles with speed at 24 knots from the MANs 1360hp engines revving at 1600 rpm.
Positive
Single handed tender launch system
Aft deck layout
Three or four cabins choice
Forty knots performance
Negative
Small galley
Competition
You might be surprised that just as with the 640 Fly reviewed here a couple months back, Galeon manages again to find two things for the 700 Raptor to make it stand out. First of these is the four cabins option in a 21 metre sport yacht, and second is the saloon patio door which can open or close all. The models which offer the four cabins are the Baia also being the only other with a fully opening patio door, the versatile Rizzardi, and the long range Couach Yacht. If you are looking for three cabins the competition is wider with all builders excelling in a different department to the other. Criteria was for an integrated hard top sport yacht twenty one metres in size, three or four cabins, with patio door.
Azimut 68S - reinvented sport yachts in 2003, 3 cabins + crew
Baia 70 Italia - surface drives = 52 knots, clever patio door, 4th crew or guest cabin
Couach 2100 Open - super range, 3 or 4 cabins, patio door
Fashion 68 - fat beam, 41 knots max with surface drives, 3 cabins
Rizzardi 73 HT - classic modern, patio door option, 3 or 4 cabins + crew for 2
Queens 72 - 3 cabins plus crew aft, living on main deck
Sessa C68 - new 2009 model, big view windows all over, 3 cabins
WILD CARD: Pacific P210 - steel built, semi displacement hull but sporty looks
Conclusion
A decade ago a sport yacht of this size would have been chosen mostly for its exterior looks. Today in 2010 it has to be a full package offering sporty exteriors, practical solutions, high performance, and a comfortable interior which can also compete with that of a flybridge motor yacht. The Galeon 700 Raptor which is the Polish Strazyn builder current flagship scores in all these departments and is a point of reference not only to compete with similar sized Sport Yachts from other renowned builders, but also to the smaller models of the fleet. The 700 Raptor has also the important element of choice which not only involves materials like wood types or colors, but goes into the planning of ones dream like that of a three or four cabins, and a galley up or down layout.

Improve-it = Airon Marine 388

Airon Marine is offering a new lower deck plan to its successful 388 model. In the new plans for the 388 the Lake Como boat builder has given the possibility to order a twin shower head version. The space of the second guest shower head is taken by advancing the aft cabin bulkhead, and from the dinette settee which in this version looses a bit of seating space and changes to an L-shaped versus a C-shaped of the standard lower deck plan. With this version you still get the much appreciated three berth mid-ship cabin. The twin head option has been long advanced by many customers who value privacy of utmost importance, and as usual to the Airon philosophy the Lake Como boat builder made its clients requests and wishes come true.

Project: Palm Beach 65 Flybridge

Palm Beach motor yachts from Australia present the project of the 65 Flybridge. The 65 Flybridge takes everything from the recently launched 65 Sedan traditional lobster yacht looking sister, adding to it an additional top deck, with second helm station. Here the 65 Flybridge will feature a central helm station with two co-pilot seats, L-shaped dinette with table, and an aft looking bench seat. The aft part of the flybridge will be left free with a possible use for a sunbathing area. For the rest the 65 Flybridge copies the hard top Sedan version with three double cabins below, and flush main deck interior. Power options start from the small 700hp Yanmar, which may look small but considering the very light 18000 kg displacement announced may give adequate speeds.

Project: Azimut Grande 120SL

As announced last month Azimut presents a new philosophy for its over one hundred feet Super Yacht models titled Grande. The current over one hundred feet range from Azimut features four models: 100 Leonardo, 103SL, 105, and 116. The 120SL is the first of four Grande new models announced, and will be the flagship of the Azimut S sport series taking top spot from the 103SL. A big super sport yacht, the 120SL follows the lines of the current S line flagship showing the Righini design touch and should launch in before the end of 2010. It will be the beginning of more bigger Grande Azimut's from the 100 with raised pilothouse, to a 110 having a widebody, and a 126 with two a half decks. Until the launch of the Azimut 126, the 120SL will be Azimut's biggest ever built yacht taking top spot from the much famed early nineties launched 118 Penthouse model. Azmiut's Grande philosophy also aims to distinct itself from its smaller builds and most importantly from other builders offering a Personal Design Equipe to the owner so to make a unique highly semi-custom yacht.
