Azimut Benetti Group New International Records Setting Standards

For the seventh year in a row, Showboats International, the prestigious journal that hosts the Global Order Book, has named Benetti world leader in the construction of custom yachts over 80 feet (24 meters) in length. The Italian brand - producer of the Class range of composite megayachts (93 to 164 feet) and the Custom range of steel and aluminium megayachts (over 45 meters) - climbs onto the podium, first among the world's top 20 builders of custom megayachts. Indeed, with 30 projects currently underway, the company has confirmed its leading role on all international reference markets. Additional confirmation comes from Miami where the judges of the prestigious Nautical Design Award for Italian nautical excellence - jointly organized by Yacht & Sail and ADI, the Industrial Design Association - bestowed recognition on the Azimut Magellano Collection. The award ceremony, held at the recently concluded Miami International Boat Show, saw the Magellano Collection assert itself for its extraordinary eco-compatibility. Just one year after the launch of the Magellano 74, progenitor of the line, the Magellano 50 has distinguished itself in its market sector for its "green" properties. This eco-friendly yacht boasts a perfect blend of materials used and low environmental impact solutions; moreover the design facilitates the use of the Easy Hybrid drive system, an exclusive Azimut-Benetti R & D project that enables cruise speeds of up to 8 knots using electric motors, the utmost in silence and simplicity. The recognition achieved by the Magellano Collection underscores the great innovative skill, design expertise and productive capacity that have set Azimut-Benetti at the forefront of the world nautical industry.

Azimut Benetti Group Leading in China

During the first four months of the current nautical year, 12 Azimut Yachts boats from 12 to 35 metres have been sold in China. The current orders portfolio includes prestigious models such as the new Azimut 88 (a lucky number in China) and an Azimut Grande 116, flagship of the Italian shipyard: the latter will be one of the largest planning yachts ever sold to a Chinese shipowner. The popularity of the boats proposed by the Group in China has been recently highlighted in the latest number of China Boating, the most authoritative nautical magazine in China: its list of the top 30 luxury yachts comprises 10 boats by Azimut Yachts, defined as the top player in the country. In fact, the orders recorded in Asia during the last 5 months are equivalent to 96% of the total turnover for the previous season with a 200% growth forecast for the current year.

Azimut Benetti Group New Buisness Lines

The Italian Company has chosen the Miami boat show to present its new advanced organizational solutions, following a business model which, in the wake of profound changes in the boating industry, puts the client and his expectations in the center of the process. The new organisation calls for activities to be divided into 3 main lines of business: Yachts (boats up to 30 metres), Megayachts (boats over 30 metres), and Yachtique (strategic services for the owner). The main change concerns the Azimut Grande Collection of planning boats over 30 meters with a wide possibility of customization introduced in US last year at the Miami show, the range of products that sees in the American market its natural positioning. Thanks to the experience of Vincenzo Poerio, long-time manager of the Company, CEO of Benetti for the past 18 years, now called to head the Megayacths Business Line, Azimut Grande Collection will apply the business model already in use at Benetti (Italian-style relationship management and custom solutions) to reinforce the tailor-made approach that typifies boats of this size. The new organization gives full expression to the company's desire to continue to keep its leading position in all key markets, as strengthened by its track record of financial stability. In fact the Azimut Benetti Group is the company in the nautical industry having the strongest leadership in the emerging markets: this is demonstrated by the success collected in China, as recently highlighted in the latest number of China Boating, the most authoritative Chinese nautical magazine, defining Azimut as the first player of the country. Lastly the creation of an important nautical pole in Brazil, opened last June 2010, which, once at full capacity, will be the biggest covered yard at worldwide level.

Fiart Enviromental Benefit

The UIM, with this special mention, wanted to acknowledge the successful effort of Fiart to develop technologies and processes to reduce emissions and consumptions during the FRP (fiber reinforced plastic) making process. Fiart is also involved in the ELB -- end of life boats project by "UCINA" regarding sustainable dismissing (discharge) of boats and stamps in FRP. This project, so far unequalled, had the goal of developing, through the employment of suitable technologies, the complete recycling of each single unit or nautical equipment, especially for FRP materials resulting from the disassembling of manufactured products. The main purpose of the project became the production of new thermoplastic, yet not thermosetting, unlimitedly recyclable times products.

Heesen Commercial Success Signing Two Contracts

The sale of the first of these, YN 16551, a 51-metre, full-displacement vessel was completed in December 2010 to create an enviable total of 7 vessels sold during that year. The first sale of 2011 – YN 15850, a 50-metre, all-aluminium semi-displacement vessel – was completed in January 2011. The contract has been signed thanks to a fruitful collaboration with Burgess. Heesen’s order book now consists of fifteen yachts currently in construction, all of which will be delivered to their owners by the end of 2014. These figures confirm the strength and financial reliability of this world-renowned company.

Heesen Lays Keel of 65 Meters

Heesen Yachts is proud to announce the keel laying of a 65-metre Fast Displacement motor yacht, the ceremony for which took place in shed 6 – the metalwork shop - at Heesen’s shipyard in Oss, the Netherlands. This hull, started last December and due for completion in January 2012, exhibits some interesting new techniques in the construction of its decks, bulkheads and part of the superstructure plating. Extruded aluminium plates of 300mm wide are welded together using a ‘friction-stir’ technique to form huge plates of 2,5 metres x 12 metres. In simple words the plates are welded together without adding welding material. This method, developed by NASA, has the enormous benefit of creating less heat during the welding process. The result is a large plate with uniform mechanical properties and much fairer and smoother construction. The famously high quality Heesen building process is always begun at the very first rung of construction. When combined with sophisticated naval architecture, this improved construction technique results in a vessel that is 30% more efficient than a round-bilge motor yacht. This vessel’s advanced design combines narrow beam and a special hull form to result in a very low wave profile over the entire speed range, while also improving its sea-keeping and manoeuvrability. This provides a very positive impact on the cost of running the yacht, as well as the lowering of its environmental footprint due to lower engine emissions. The Owner appointed the award-winning design studio, Bannenberg and Rowell to create the interior of this radical superyacht.

New Model: Benetti Class 121 Classic

The first model of the new Benetti Class 121 Classic, was launched last 15 December in Viareggio. The latest restyling of the Classic, this being the third after the first 35 presented in 1999, to the second 120 series, has thoroughly renewed the internal layout by making major changes on the main and lower decks, along the exterior lines which now feature different window profiles all around. But don't be mistaken design duties are as the same as previous two series with Stefano Righini taking care of the outside, and Francois Zuretti the interiors. Much of the first 121 Classic remains top secret, from the name to the interior design. Marked with hull number BC125, it is distinguished by light shades of cream both indoors as well as outdoors, where the elegant and refined owner’s style emerges from the delicate shade of cream chosen for the hull. Delivery is expected at the beginning of April 2011. The standard arrangement for the 121 Classic offers four double guest cabins, and an owners stateroom on the main deck. Crew accommodation has three double cabins, plus a captains room on the upper deck by the pilot house. Performance is up to 15 knots top speed, from twin MTU 1501hp engines. INBUILD ~ Galeon 780 Crystal Part 3 of 9

We continue the process of showing the building stages of hull number one of Galeon's upcoming soon to be launched flagship, the Tony Castro designed 780 Crystal. In the last of this dedicated in build series shown in the middle of 2010, we showed the main deck mould being prepared. Now its time to show the lower deck preparation with the bulkheads here showing designated cabin areas. Where there is that temporally ladder will be the engine room where two big diesel engines from 1500 up to 1900hp will power the 780 Crystal, while the place where those Galeon workers are located is to be the owners stateroom which will be a full beam mid ship affair with large view windows. The windows has also received an extension in size since the outlining of the project in 2008. In front of the owners cabin divided so far by one partition for the port side wall will be two guest cabins, and to fore will the VIP suite.

The project of the new Sacs 17.11 m Strider Zeta R is an evolution of the Strider Z PowerYacht presented back in the past Summer 2010. As is to many Sacs designs this project comes from the hands of architect Christian Grande who presents a modern looking Rib Yacht with its striking feature being the two long windows in the hull sides, an optional hard top, and a hull design with a low centre of gravity, wide beam, and big tubes which will deliver excellent stability, and good sea keeping qualities. The new Sacs Strider Zeta R will surprise for large spaces and being the flagship of the range it has to be so. Engine: Yanmar 8LV 370hp

Yanmar has developed a new 4.46 litre twin-turbo V8 diesel engine, coupled to a stern drive or gearbox; the 8LV 370hp. The engine is EPA Tier 3 compliant, and was shown to the public for the first time at the 2011 Düsseldorf Boat Show. The compact 8LV diesel can be installed in single or twin configuration, with the new, hydrodynamic Yanmar ZT370 dual propeller stern drive or KMH50 series transmission, down angle or V-drive. It has a twin turbocharger and common rail fuel injection for superior performance in terms of fuel economics and acceleration. There are four valves per cylinder. In the Yanmar tradition of high power from low weight, dry engine weight is just 450 kg. This is the first engine to use Yanmar’s own, newly developed CAN-bus vessel control system, the Yanmar VCS. It can be ordered with the new joystick, facilitating 360º turn, sideways and diagonal movement. A key feature of the high torque 8LV is its wide power band. It idles at 550 rpm, capable of crawling speed in the marina, aided further by a hydraulic clutch, with both stern drive and gear configurations. Maximum engine speed is 3,800 rpm, well ahead of other engines in this segment. Further benefits are exceptionally low noise levels and minimised vibration, ease of installation and servicing, and the advantage of a powerful 12V / 180A alternator. The 8LV is expected to attract a wide variety of boat builders producing craft up to 45 feet for applications ranging from water skiing to cruising. Additionally, the engine will be used for re powering, offering the advantages of diesel over similar-sized V8 gasoline units.

Project: Tiara 3100 Coronet

Tiara Yachts is proud to introduce the project of the 3100 Coronet. This new sport cruiser is derived from the successful 2900 Coronet in look and design terms. But don't be mistaken, the 3100 Coronet will incorporate a new hull and deck design that enhances day boating, with a comfortable cabin for short term overnight for two. The cabin finished in teak will also feature a small separate shower head, and medium sized L-shaped galley. Standard model features will be a fresh white gel coat hull and deck, Imron Platinum boot line, Tiara custom composite windshield frame with tempered safety glass and center vent, fiberglass radar arch, swim platform with built-in ladder, molded-in fiberglass bow pulpit, Tiara custom diamond pattern non-skid, and two tone exterior vinyl with Coronet embroidery stitch. The over sized cockpit for a boat measuring ten meters overall, follows latest trends of a single level from helm to transom, with ample seating, including double wide helm seat, curved companion lounge, two aft-facing seats, and port and starboard aft L-lounges. An entertainment center with TV jack, electric grill, sink and drawer refrigerator is immediately aft of the helm seat. The 3100 Coronet also features some unique options; canvas soft top, fiber glass hardtop, and a teak accent package. One can also customize the color of his 3100 Coronet from the hull, boot line, dash, and three choices in interior fabrics. Power is the only negative part of the 3100 Coronet project available only with twin line shaft propulsion Crusader 375hp petrol gas engines which give a 35 knots top speed, and a 30 knots cruise. Here's hoping that a diesel choice will be available, what will make the 3100 Coronet more interesting for the European market, but also for those who cruise further to the usual in the USA. www.tiarayachts.com

New Model: Nord West 430 Sport

Thanks again to Nord West we are again proud to present the exclusive preview of the 430 Sport. This new model was presented together with the 430 SportsTop at the Gothenburg boat show, and as with the smaller 370 of the same designation we see Nord West again challenging itself to a more Mediterranean type design, which is also very much appreciated up North in colder climates. The 430 Sport is identical minus the hard top to the SportsTop version, same choices of three different layouts below which can sleep from four up to six in two or three cabins, and stern drive or IPS pod propulsion. An owner choosing the Nord West 430 has a total of eight choices including the important between an open environment which can be closed with a canopy, or a more enclosed hard top choice which makes it easier to use all year round even when the weather doest not look good. To be honest if I had this choice in my hands I would still be confused between the two new Nord West 430 as both look awesomely beautiful with the open version looking that extra bit sexy and sportier. Powering the 430 Sport which has the Benny Martinsson multi prized series four hull as used for the 420 Flybridge is Volvo Swedish engines with a standard twin 370hp stern drive propulsion, and going up to an optional 435hp and IPS pods.

Project: Austin Parker AP54 Fly

After returning back to the market in 2009, and showing more strength in 2010 with the presentation of three new models Austin Parker opens 2011 with the presentation of the AP54 Fly project. This traditional yacht if these two words actually can describe any Austin Parker is based on the latest new model of the 2010 season, the AP52 Open. As all Austin Parker's the AP54 Fly is designed by Fulvio De Simoni Italproject team who presents traditional down East lobster lines, but with a modern Italian take on the overall concept. I am sure that in no history photos of a down East lobster boat you will find any large glassed windows in the cabins, or a bathing platform for that manner. But for a yacht giving panache and class the lobster touch surely makes everything look elegant with the appreciated timeless attitude and this is basically the success that characterizes these type of yachts. Inside of the AP54 Fly we see the layout of the 52 Open offering three double cabins with two bathrooms, large lounge, separate galley, crew cabin with head, and tender garage aft. The owners room while located to fore gives a space similar to that of a mid ship layout as in fact the AP54 has its maximum beam in this area. Performance is a top speed of 34 knots max coming from twin 900hp MAN engines.

Vicem Yachts from Turkey opens 2011 with the presentation of a new worldwide debut of its third line of yachts: the Vanguard Line. This new line has important features to it and will start up with the above rendering shown 45 Vanguard project, which is set to launch this year. A 33 Vanguard will follow the 45. The Vanguard is indeed designed by Vicem own design department styling for the exterior and the interior, while the hull and naval architecture were developed by legendary naval architect Michael Peters who here presents a twenty degrees deep Vee dead rise hull. An aggressive yet clean lined design that combines wood elements that typify the classic Vicem style with new color palettes of grey, silver and blue. Accommodation for the 45 Vanguard is still very much comfortable both inside and outside. The interior offers two cabins; one forward and second to midships, head, separate shower room, and a comfortable galley. Project: Ferretti Custom Line 33 Navetta Crescendo

Ferretti Custom Line presents its latest project, the 33 Navetta Crescendo. Rising as is Crescendo in English is the new evolution of Ferretti Custom Line’s semi-displacement range, and evokes the universe of classical music, entering the sphere of Italian culture and style. Quality, artisan features, sophisticated harmony, elegance and balance are the basic values of Crescendo, which is a natural evolution of the previous 33 Navetta of the semi-displacement line. As is common in the Ferretti Custom Line range, 33 Navetta Crescendo is the result of the close working relationship between Studio Zuccon International Project, Advanced Yacht Technology the Ferretti Group’s naval research and design centre, and the team of architects and designers of Centro Stile, who here present classical external lines which blend harmoniously with the contemporary interior design which can be personalised entirely according to the owner’s choices. On 33 Navetta Crescendo, as indeed on the entire Ferretti Custom Line range, all details which are not structural like, for example, furnishings, fabrics and décor, can be customized according to owners’ preferences. Aided by the Centro Stile architects and designers, they can develop their own, tailor-made yacht, choosing from a selection of proposals by top Italian and international companies. Natural light which filters through large windows illuminates the spacious interiors of the 33 Navetta Crescendo which also stands out in this segment for her three full decks, which are integrated into the line of the yacht. One new feature, compared with the previous model, is also a large sundeck. There is also a number of important design solutions; more direct contact with the sea, large salon on the main deck which features a dining area, reduction of visual physical barriers blocking the view of the sea to a minimum, owner suite in a privileged position at bow on the main deck, separation of the guest and crew flows through dedicated crew area from the galley, four spacious guest cabins on the lower deck all with large open view windows overlooking the sea with the opportunity to separate the beds which turns a double room into a twin, large highly versatile upper deck thanks to the system of circular sliding doors with a dining area in a position of complete privacy, and a new sundeck which features a small swimming-pool and sunbathing area.

Here at PowerYacht we show you the exclusive first pictures of the 430 SportsTop which as is usual to Nord West will challenge its other European competitors for the versatility of this sport cruiser, and the choice it gives to the owner. This starts from propulsion in stern drive or IPS pod, to a two or three double cabin interior choice. The choice of the interior of the 430 is also impressive offering three choices. From the standard two en-suited cabins layout, three cabins with cabin three being a single berth with personal head ideally suited if you carry a crew, and last a three double choice with a single shower head. For the exterior looks of the 430, designer but also company owner Benny Martinsson took a lot from the successful 370 SportsTop model with everything being bigger and more spacious. The hull is also same as the multi prized Nord West 420 Flybridge which has been acclaimed as one of the best handling IPS propelled boats around. The 430 SportsTop is powered by twin Volvo 370 or 435hp engines, this last available only with IPS600 pods, with the standard smaller unit available as both stern drive and IPS500.

Improve-it = Heesen 47m YN 15147

Heesen Yachts has recently launched the sixth vessel in the 47 Metre displacement class. The 47.00 meter is a design that results from the close collaboration of Heesen in house naval architects and Frank Laupman from Omega Architects, who conceived her stream-lined exterior design with its pelican beak bow. The 47 Metre displacement class is renowned for its fine entry at the bow, which incorporates an efficient bulb, its notable top speed of 15,5 Knots and an excellent range of 4.000 Nm at 12 knots. The yacht’s elegant superstructure combined with the sloped wheelhouse windows give M/Y Air a particularly sleek appearance. YN 15147, M/Y Air is sister ship to YN 12247, M/Y Yalla (2004), YN 13147, M/Y Let it Be (2006), YN 13547 M/Y Mon Plaisir (2007), YN 14047 M/Y Elandess (2008), and YN 14347, M/Y Blind Date (2009). Three further 47-metre yachts are currently in build: YN 15347 scheduled for delivery in 2011, YN 15747 and YN 16347 for delivery in 2012. YN 15147 interior has been designed by Frank Laupman from Omega Architects, who created a classic contemporary style that makes use of ultra-modern loose furniture to create a cosy environment. The décor incorporates details in leather, brushed stainless steel and burl to make the atmosphere even warmer. For strategic wood finishes, Laupman chose Japanese elm (Sen) veneer, an exotic pale timber whose strong veins have been brushed and lacquered in satin gloss, and skilfully positioned these adjacent to a darker American walnut to create a sophisticated and at the same time natural atmosphere. M/Y Air accommodates the owner and ten guests in five cabins, four of these on the lower deck, and an owner’s suite traditionally located on the forward part of the main deck. Like the owner’s suite, one of the two VIP cabins that extend across the yacht’s full-beam offers a full bathroom, while all the other guests cabins have en suite shower rooms. The remaining two guest cabins are located on either side of a central passageway, with the cabin on the port side being a double, while to starboard is a twin cabin fitted with additional pullman beds that descend from the deck head. For added versatility, the two single beds in this latter cabin can be easily transformed into a double. The yacht’s eight crew members are accommodated in four cabins, all provided with ensuite shower rooms, while the captain’s cabin is located on the upper deck with direct access to the bridge. The main saloon is divided into three areas, a lobby, lounge, and a formal dining area where all twelve guests are able to be seated around a rectangular table finished in Matt wengé. Perhaps the most striking feature of M/Y Air’s interior is the theatre room located on the upper deck. This incorporates a Panasonic 103" HD Plasma Screen, one of the biggest currently available on the market complemented by a full 7.1 Steinway Lyngdorf Audio System. This unique audio installation, designed specifically for M/Y Air, includes two flagship Model D speakers standing nearly 7 feet tall on either side of the plasma screen. These speakers, together with the center and four surround speakers, are hand-finished in the same high-gloss black piano finish famously used on Steinway & Sons pianos and accented with 24k gold. To complete the system, are five Dual Woofers, three located below the plasma screen and two custom-built woofers in the deck head to the rear. The system uses 6.400 Watts of power to provide flawless reproduction of music and movie sound tracks. A Custom iPad controls the whole system with both Crestron and Cisco.

New Model: Galeon 385 Open

Galeon continue the presentation of the 385 series model, first presented as HTS i.e hard top sports in Cannes 2010, and now premiering the 385 Open in gold color at Dusseldorf, Germany. As was the case for the HTS, the 385 Open designed by Tony Castro shows impressive good looks which are complemented by very spacious spaces inside, and outside. But apart the forward looking radar arch design which cater for more hands in the air experience, hull one of the 385 Open also offered the novelty for having a hydraulic up and down bathing platform which gives the benefit and possibility of carrying a second and larger tender aft. The extended platform also increases length by 120 centimeters to the standard 385 bringing the length overall to 44 feet, and also makes it one of the first stern drive powered boats to offer this option. For the rest the 385 Open continues its grand spaces everywhere. The outside impresses for its single floor layout which offers a C-shaped settee, chaise lounge to port, and helm station, galley to starboard. Here the impressive area is the settee which underneath just like magic you also have a well spaced tender garage which can stow a 2.60 meter in length water craft. Down below the space is for two cabins both with en suite heads; owners stateroom to fore, double or two single scissor movement bed to aft, C-shaped dinette, and L-shaped galley. Power for the 385 Open is over seven engine choices from Volvo and Volkswagen which start from twin 225hp up to 370hp. This last option gives a top speed of 40 knots max. Start up base engine is a twin Volvo 270hp petrol which gives a competitive price, especially if you consider the high quality the 385 shows in all areas, which comes complete the renowned Tony Castro design both above and below the waterline.

Project: Apreamare 66 Maestro

Apreamare presents the project of the 66 Maestro, evolution of the 65 which launched this innovative styled motor yacht range from Naples South Italy builder five years ago. Designed as all the Apreamare Maestro range by Zuccon International Project, the 66 will improve all the areas over the previous 65 model, thanks to the use of Volvo IPS forward looking pod propulsion. Thanks to the use of the 2005 presented innovative Volvo propulsion the Apreamare 66 Maestro will have a larger full beam mid ship owners cabin, and a more spacious crew room with direct access to the engine room. While on the task of evolving this model Apreamare also improved other areas; the dinette on the main deck, aft deck now with a fixed table and settee, flybridge which is now larger thanks to a further extension, and the choice of having an open fly with mast or a new alternative hard top version. The standard power of the 66 Maestro will be twin Volvo 756hp engines, with IPS-3 1050 forward looking dual propeller pods propulsion with speeds estimates being of a 30 knots max, and 26 cruise speed.

Substance Versus Looks

The title of my monthly blogger is not about a recent boat show visit, but more about the web sites of some of the major boat and yacht builders. Having made the previous 1998 till 2008 in growth, the website of some boat builders do in fact look impressive, and extraordinary with some of them even out classing those of much bigger industries as is the car or fashion related brands industry.
So what's wrong with this one might tell me, being a luxury industry a yacht brand web showroom has to look and impress. The problem is that in recent times these websites do not see a lot of updates, and the more flashy they look the less it happens. Sometimes a new model photos, or project rendering do really take a lot to come by. We can say you are even lucky if they ever do. The reason here is cost cutting, as a flashy high profile website is also very expensive to run and maintain. Surely not informing of what's happening about your company and brand in this time and moment is not good, as being not active can mean to some buyers that things are not running well at the moment, or that you are in big trouble. Today having a well updated website does mean as much as attending to a major boat show.
A lesson to learn here is given by some US boat builders who actually have a blog to keep its customers, and brand followers on the loop of whats happening in the company. One such blog is that of Back Cove which is always updated and really follows whats happening inside the yard. You have posts from a weekly or monthly basis which shows the yard and new model renderings, and updates shown and discussed online. Without having a Back Cove by visiting there Blog you feel part of there family, which is always a good feeling if you are interested to purchase in a brand.
So if you are a boat builder I actually suggest to reduce the costly flashy stuff at the moment, and show to customers how a boat is build from project renderings to actual building stages and improvements. I think communicating that building a boat is totally different then producing a car would be important in the future to move forward for the yachting industry, showing the more natural man work process of construction that a yacht has, being it a ten or thirty meter plus super yacht.
