After the success of its 2006 debut in the fabulous setting of the island of Capri, the 2007 edition chose the antique magic of Venice. As with last year’s Power Circle, the heart of the event was the sea trials with noth the Itama Forty and FiftyFive at guests disposal from Friday to Sunday. Itama style is also sunny vitality and sober elegance, and as such, this edition offered numerous opportunities for refined relaxation and entertainment. On Friday, guests were invited to a party at the Hotel Excelsior, on the esplanade of the Venetian Lido. This very special evening included a performance by the international opera star, Katia Ricciarelli, who together with tenor Francesco Zingariello and a 15-piece orchestra, enchanted the guests. On Saturday evening, guests enjoyed both a dinner and after dinner entertainment in the picturesquely elegant salons of the Ca’Vendramin Calergi, the prestigious home of the Venice Casino. And it is the Venice Casino, together with Mastro Raphael, Porsche and Poltrona Frau, that constituted the group of partners who joined together to ensure that the second edition of the Itama Power Circe was a total success.

Menorquin Yachts Infusion Process

Given Menorquin Yachts’ constant desire to provide the highest construction standards, the shipyard has decided to use the most advanced laminating system; that is a vacuum assisted resin infusion process. This very modern technique provides a long list of advantages, starting with allowing the hull to be built in a single piece instead of having to join two parts, as is necessary when using the usual system. In addition, the fact that the resin is homogenously applied means greater stiffness and ruggedness and material saving, which in turn means weight saving, which affects the dynamic qualities of the boat. Let’s not forget that, thanks to this system, we will avoid the undesirable bubbles, which is impossible to do if the resin is applied on an open mould. But there are many more arguments in favour of infusion, for example it also has a favourable impact on the environment and especially on workers’ health given that it reduces styrene emissions to zero. And speaking of the environment, it is also worth mentioning the reduction of residuals as an additional advantage of infusion. Whilst as far as time saving is concerned, it is worth saying that with this system the subsequent sanding of the hull is no longer necessary. The first steps are actually similar to the old process; that is preparing the mould, painting and applying the first layer of vinylester resin to protect against osmosis. The differences begin once this first stage is over, in fact, the various layers of fibreglass are dry-applied; that is without intermediate resin.Once everything has been arranged, the valves are opened, allowing the resin to penetrate and saturate the fibre. This takes about an hour and a half. Thanks to the vacuum effect, that is the absence of air inside the created space, the fibre spreads over the whole surface evenly avoiding any sort of bubble. The process ends by subjecting the boat to a 12 or 16 hour tanning at 41ºC with the aim of achieving an excellent fusion of fibreglass and resin. It could seem a complex process at first glance, but once mastered it is infinitely more convenient than the usual system for all the advantages already listed and especially for the peace of mind it gives to know that state-of-the-art technology is being employed to provide customers with the highest possible standards.

Powerboat P1 - German Gran Prix of the Sea Preview

Sunseeker Challenger in Naples
Once a small fishing village, Travemunde is now one of the most popular and fashionable seaside resorts on the Baltic Coast. With beautiful sandy beaches stretching 4.5km, reputably the best on the German Baltic, it is today an internationally acclaimed tourist destination. For many centuries Travemünde was almost exclusively known for its fishing industry and shipping. However, during the 18th Century, it became fashionable with the aristocracy as a summer retreat and its waters fast developed a reputation for their healing qualities, attracting visitors from wide and far. Tourism was born! Today it continues to enjoy a reputation for its therapeutic bathing, although exclusive health resorts have largely replaced the traditional bathing houses.
The Powerboat P1 German Grand Prix of the Sea has become one of the most popular events of the P1 calendar, and provides an opportunity for the German public to experience at first hand the exciting spectacle and fast competitive racing of P1. In 2006, over 80,000 people lined the shores to watch the racing action and this year promises to be another action-packed festival of international sport, glamour and entertainment, on and off the water.
This third way point of the 2007 season, will be a confirmation test for King of Shaves and Roscioli Hotels Roma who both dominated the 2 races in Naples on there respective Evolution and Super Sport Class. Other favorite teams will need to show that they still can compete for this season, such is the case of Italian OSG, winner of the 2006 Evolution Class, but also Fainplast in the same category who won the first Grand Prix of Malta but was disqualified for missing a course buoy during the race.
In the Super Sport class other awaited but struggling team seems to be Sunseeker Challenger who with a similar competing package to a Formula One team still seems not have made the desired impact on the competition yet. Will the German Grand Prix prove the right spot for them? This coming weekend in Germany will for sure answer some of these questions, as for those still remaining one will have to wait for the legendary Cowes Grand Prix in England scheduled for the end of August.

Boat Review: Italcraft 95 Maxi Drago

The 95 Maxi Drago is the first new model from the legendary Italcraft brand, presented under the belts of the new owners, the Inrizzardi Group. Italcraft is the nautical brand which in it's history in the seventies and eighties presented some of the most important technical innovations for motorboats, which to this day have become standard design fixtures. Innovations like tunnel propellers, surface drives and the variable deep vee hull where some of the most popular inventions which look very common in today's crafts but are all credit to this legendary Italian builder, who was never afraid of pushing the limits. The 95 Maxi Drago model which at this time is the biggest from the yard, continues to shout performance with classic design touches for the South Lazio region marque and is a success in an ever increasing competitive market segment.
The standard layout for the 95 Maxi Drago is a 4 cabin offer all with independent en-suite shower head for a total of 8 berth sleeping accommodation for the owner and his guests. A full beam owners cabin is located mid ship, VIP cabin forward and 2 guest cabins in between. Surprisingly also for a 4 cabin offer there is a lower saloon to port and a home size galley to starboard. Crew quarters are located further aft with a total of 4 berths and a separate entrance, concluding the standard form of the lower deck.
The upper deck is the heart for the Maxi Drago with a spacious bar area to port which creates a spacious entertainment area thanks to the C-shaped saloon settee to starboard. The helm station is located in the centre and an L-shaped settee is located to port in order for the guests to enjoy the trip and views during the navigation of the yacht. A spacious deck and outside entertaining area compliments the interior saloon.
Based on the Corrubbia Class Military vessel, which has already been delivered in 20 models the Maxi Drago has as safe a ride as you can get and one of the best sea handling super yachts available to the market today. Hull Designer Gianluca Caputi designer for the hull and superstructure for the Maxi Drago and for all models of the current Italcraft range says it best, when declaring a superior standard which guarantees superior sea keeping quality of the hull, performance levels and a top construction standard present in the Italcraft yachts. Noting that all models are usually tested in the Military field before going to the recreational sector, he has a point as very few yachts in the market do perform such a solid testing before going to the market.
sea keeping qualities
deck arrangement
not complete high bulwark
Competition in the open hard top super yacht 27 to 30 metre segment is ever increasing, which apart from the under mentioned alternative offers to the Italcraft, three other important projects from different builders are in line for future presentation. Add to that the other projects from the custom builders and you come with a much bigger list, seeing the big competition in this market segment today. Here is what you should give a look before deciding:
AB Yachts 92 - jet propulsion with superb handling and performance, 56 knot top speed
Arno Leopard 27 - classic timeless hard top design by Paolo Caliari
Canados 90 Open - innovative ultra modern glass hard top with wide body saloon area
Couach 2800 Open - also a military derivation hull, good sea keeping

The 95 Maxi Drago is a superb open hardtop super yacht which brings together a timeless innovative design but with a big open eye to what regards safety and superlative sea keeping capabilities derived directly from unstoppable military testing. If your aim is to have a comfortable yacht when the going gets tough there is no doubt the Maxi Drago will be on the top of your list, still this is only one of the reasons, as the finishing standard, luxury comfort and a full customization tailor made for the clients makes this fast super sport yacht as one of the best in it's class.

Project: Dominator 75

The Fano Yacht Builder, presents this project which is the replacement for the Dominator 78 after 10 years of production for this model. The new 24 mtr motor yacht will offer a spacious 4 cabin 4 heads layout with 2 berth crew cabin aft. The theme of this 75 feet motor yacht are the large windows in every area, in order to allow the maximum gain of natural light inside, but also impressive outside space especially on the flybridge but also the unique Jacuzzi pool on the forward deck, which to my knowledge is a unique option for this size. As usual with all Dominator yachts a huge customization offer is available for both inside and outside, making all yachts unique in a certain way to the wishes of the client. Engine option should be for a pair of MAN and MTU from 1360 up to 1550 HP.

Projects: Raffaelli 25 Thaityan, Raffaelli 60 Meltemi, Raffaelli Calima

Raffaelli presents a project of what should be the new flagship at 25 mtr of the Pesaro Italian boat builder. Little information have been presented so far but imagine a standard 4 cabin layout plus crew, superb sea keeping qualities and the usual perfect weight distribution the yard is renowned for, that usually gets a CE Category A certification also on the smaller models like the 12 metre Shamal.
The Raffaelli 60 Meltemi named after the famous Greek wind, will fit nicely between the successful 52 Maestrale and the current top of the range 66 Ontera motor yachts. Standard layout is a spacious 3 cabin affair with a full width master cabin mid ship and 2 spacious identical guest cabins forward. Speed estimation is for 30 knots with 2 x Caterpillar 850 hp engines.
Raffaelli Calima is the novelty at the medium competitive 14 metre flybridge motor cruiser category, fitting between the other Raffaelli family models 12.96 mtr Levante Fly and the 15 mtr Compass Rose. The interior layout is a classic 3 cabin affair with master cabin forward with en-suite head, 2 identical guest cabins with 2 in-line single berths and guest shower head. Performance estimation is for a 30 knot top speed with 2 x 400 HP Iveco Aifo engines. As all Raffaelli boats also this new project will be built and constructed to a CE Category A standard, something not very common in most of the offers in this size range.

Class 1 - Victory 77 Wins Athens Grand Prix

Victory 77 winner of the Greek Grand Prix for the Class-1 Offshore
Victory 77’s Arif Saif Al Zaffeen and Jean-Marc Sanchez led home a Victory one-two, winning today’s Greek Grand Prix ahead of team-mates Nadir bin Hendi and Mohammed Al Suwaidi in Victory 7, with Qatar 96’s Sheikh Hassan Al-Thani and Matteo Nicolini completing a clean sweep of the podium for the Middle East. Al Zafeen and Sanchez didn’t have it all their own in the early stages and were made to work hard for their win. From the start it was Victory 7 who grabbed the early lead and for the opening four laps had to fend off a strong challenge from Spirit of Norway. But on lap five, Spirit of Norway slowed and returned to the pits to replace a broken water hose. Victory 77 moved into second place and then on lap eight swept passed their team-mates, going on take a comfortable win, completing the 21-laps in 54mins 19.96secs at an average speed of 118.65mph/190.91kmh. It was a race of high attrition, and with two of the fancied boats, both running V8s suffering engine problems and going out, Negotiator on lap one and Jotun on lap 5 it was left to the Qatar team to try to mount a serious challenge. But the pace of the Victory outfits was too much, but third and fourth for Qatar 96 and 95 completed a rout of the top four positions for the Middle East teams over their European challengers. Spirit of Norway, who had rejoined the race on lap 10, were able to salvage valuable points, clawing their way back to finish fifth with Nicola Giorgi and Tomaso Polli celebrating their renewed partnership with sixth spot, in SeveneleveN. For the young Australian, Tom Barry-Cotter, his Class 1 debut was less fruitful, when he and Norwegian Pal Virik Nilsen were forced to retire Spirit of Norway 20 on lap-7 with a broken propeller.

Class 1 - Season Preview before start at Athens

If the last two seasons have seen nerve-tingling, edge-of-the-seat climaxes to the Class 1 World Powerboat Championship – in 2007, Class 1 looks set for one of its strongest seasons to date; a competitive fleet with new teams and line-ups, three new venues: Athens (Greece), Constanta (Romania) and El Alamein (Egypt), plus the return of Oslo (Norway) along with Arendal (Norway), Doha (Qatar) and Dubai (UAE) making up an impressive calendar, and a raft of new marketing initiatives adding to the mix for what promises to be a year to enthral and captivate. Eleven boats will line up for the season-opener in Palaio Faliro-Athens, Greece on Sunday, 10 June; five are proven race-winners, seven have won a pole position and eight have also grabbed podium finishes. And with new technical rulings and a new format to the EDOX Pole Position, all of which are designed to make the racing and competition closer, the outcome of the Greek Grand Prix, let alone the 2007 title race, is impossible to predict. If a favourite or winner is hard to pick, the team to beat is not. Spirit of Norway has over the last five seasons made the title their own, but know that they will face a fierce onslaught from their rivals, all of whom are desperate to end their reign. Gjelsten and Curtis, who, with 30 wins from 74 starts, seem happy with their set-up, hint at having made one or two ‘adjustments’ but stay with their trusty V12 engine package, and both will look at the list of new pairings with great interest. Victory 77, who has pushed Spirit to the brink for the last two years, start with newcomer Arif Saif Al Zafeen taking over the wheel from Mohammed Al Marri to team up with Jean-Marc Sanchez. Qatar 95, who grabbed their first win and finished third in the title race last season have also made a switch, with Luca Nicolini taking over as throttleman to join Al-Sulaiti. And whilst Spirit’s arch-rivals Qatar 96 maintain their line-up of Sheikh Hassan Al-Thani alongside Matteo Nicolini, they have switched from the V8 back to the SKEMA V12.Jotun, who also grabbed their first win in 2006 and enjoyed their best season to date finishing fourth, maintain the all-Norwegian pairing of Tandberg and Zaborowski, but switch back to the MTI and stay with the Mercury Class 1 V8. Chris Parsonage takes on his fourth partner in as many seasons, with the 2005 Class 1 World Champion, Bard Eker, stepping into the drivers’ seat in Negotiator with Parsonage opting to run Sterling V8s. Montavoci and Cirilli, another outfit to go well last season taking their first Pole Position win and two podiums, remain unchanged in Foresti&Suardi, as does Victory 7, with Nadir Bin Hendi and Ahmed Al-Suwaidi lining up for their second season together; Nicola Giorgi is still to name his driver in SeveneleveN, but confirms he will start the season in the Cougar. Two new teams entered this year sees an all-Italian line-up with Maurizio Ceschin returning to racing alongside Class 1 debutant, Enrico Ceriale in Overwave and 19 year-old Tom Barry-Cotter becoming the youngest competitor in Class 1 for over a decade, teaming up with Norwegian Pal Virik Nilsen in Spirit of Norway 20 to form this season’s youngest partnership.

America's Cup - Louis Vuitton Final

Finally the much waited 1st of June is here, the beginning of the final challenger selection. He who will be selected has to win the first to five races in a best of nine series. Top teams of Luna Rossa Prada Challenge and Emirates Team New Zealand will fight in a fierce duel in order to challenge the mighty Swiss Defender Team of Alinghi. Italian Team Luna Rossa is in it's second Louis Vuitton Cup Final, after a successful campaign in 1999/2000 in Auckland dominated by a fast ITA 45. One has to admit that this was a superb result for a first campaign project although then defeated to a 5-0 by superior Team New Zealand in the America's Cup Final. Team New Zealand is also in it's second Louis Vuitton Cup, having led a full on success campaign and winning the America's Cup in 1995. The New Zealand Team got defender status after that and had to defend the cup in 2000 a successful defense, and 2003 a very disappointing campaign lossing 5-0 to Swiss Challenger Alinghi. In the official press conference both teams confirmed there latest constructed boat, with the days after the semi final being a non stop work of optimizing performance in view of the ahead challenge. Many journalists in the conference questioned the different styles of match racing of both teams with Team New Zealand usually liking a more close approach and Italians Luna Rossa usually being more creative in there navigation around the race course. Other questions was whether New Zealand skipper Dean Barker could actually resist the skills showed by James Spithill in the 5 minutes prestart during the Semi-Final. The time will definitely answer these questions and both interviewed team members declared confidence in there racing styles and crew mates.
