Azimut Benetti Group Barcelona Show Confirms Eco Success

Barcelona welcomed the Azimut Magellano 50 enthusiastically. In a short time, this star of the Genoa Boat Show has become a benchmark for sustainable boating throughout the world. Constructed in line with eco-standards and materials and capable of providing a 13% saving in fuel costs thanks to a hybrid engine and the particular shape of its hull, the Magellano 50 has a green soul. Visitors attending the event in the Catalan city expressed a special interest in the HNOS Berga stand which was showcasing a total of nine yachts from the Azimut and Atlantis range, six of which were being presented for the first time on the Iberian peninsular. Particularly popular was the Azimut 48, which boasts one of the most spacious and well-equipped flybridges in its category, as were the three new Atlantis models: Verve 36, 40 and 48, perfect examples of the grit and dynamism that characterize the most sporty brand in the Group. Ignition sparks at the Barcelona Boat Show indicate ripples of a revival running through the yacht market. A revival that will reward only those companies, like Azimut-Benetti Group, who have chosen to invest in new products, an essential strategy, in order to maintain a competitive and central position on the international horizon.

Mulder to Build Second Yard

Mulder Shipyard in the Netherlands has announced that construction will soon start on a new yard just ten kilometres from its current facility. This second yard in Zoeterwoude Rijndijk will cover an area of 7000 square metres and focus on the maintenance, refit and new build of yachts between 18 and 40 metres. It should be ready to start operations in 2012, with the first new yacht launching in 2013. The existing facilities in Voorschoten will remain open and be dedicated to yachts under 18 metres. Both Mulder yards are within 20 minutes of Amsterdam Schiphol Airport. One of the reasons for this major expansion is the difficulties experienced at the current yard with moving and launching large yachts, which are increasingly in demand from Mulder Shipyard. There is also a shortage of storage space. The construction of a new yard will considerably increase Mulder’s flexibility and product efficiency to accommodate the very healthy order portfolio. It also gives the yacht builder the opportunity to deliver more yachts, and meet the future demand for larger yachts and refit projects. The final permits for the new facilities have been issued and construction will get underway in early 2011. The first hall of the new yard will be equipped with two dry docks of 55m x 13m. The second hall can accommodate the simultaneous construction of four yachts up to 30 metres. The projects in this hall are accessible via three work floors. The ground floor will be used for working on engines, generators, propulsion systems, bowthrusters, sternthrusters, stabilisers and similar equipment, and include a store room. The first floor will facilitate the assembly of the interior, service installations and electrical systems, and house Mulder’s interior department and spraying facilities. The new yard will also include a 100-tonne boat lift and a modern office building. Although the expansion requires a substantial investment, it will eventually lead to major cost synergies. In addition to new builds and refit activities, the new yard will also provide services for the growing Mulder fleet. The Voorschoten location will focus on the construction of the Mulder Favorite and the Bellagio, while also being used for the storage and maintenance of smaller yachts.

Ranger Tugs Rendezvous

Ranger Tugs hosted the second annual Owners Rendezvous event for Ranger Tugs owners and their crew at the Port of Bremerton Marina in Washington. The company welcomed 42 boats in September which was 10 more than last year’s inaugural event. With over 1,000 Ranger Tugs owners in the U.S. and Canada, the Owners Rendezvous is a growing event and a testament to the camaraderie and lifestyle that the trailerable, fuel-efficient boats offer. Based on the popularity of the event, Ranger Tugs is already planning for 2011 and the event will again be in Bremerton, Sept. 9-11, 2011; registration is available on the owners group website. David and Maureen Baker served as the 2010 event’s volunteer organizers and are owners of the Ranger 29 Karma. Ranger Tugs owners and enthusiasts in attendance traveled from across North America and from as far away as Virginia; many brought their boats by trailer, then launched locally for the short cruise to Bremerton. With boats ranging in size from 21 to 29 feet, the event’s Tug Crawl is an open house that allows owners to see models of all sizes, share insights and ideas on equipment, décor or other personalized touches. In addition to the social aspects of the rendezvous, the weekend included several education opportunities. A service seminar presented by Mer Marine, an area MER Yanmar service center, featured a demonstration of fluid and filter changes and the local power squadron from Port Orchard, WA, was also on hand to perform courtesy exams and safety checks. At the close of the rendezvous, the Bakers and Ranger Tugs staff announced that next year’s rendezvous will be held Sept. 9-11, and immediately began booking reservations from several owners in attendance. The 2011 goal is to welcome 75 boats and their owners and crew to the event.

Riviera Syndication Boast Sales

Every economic condition produces a positive climate for certain sectors of the market and luxury boat syndication is one of the industries that has actually prospered during the Global Financial Crisis (GFC). The Marine Industry is often an accurate indicator of which industries at a given period of time are prospering. The purchase of a luxury boat is generally the reward of a successful business and according to Marine Industry stalwart John Russell of Brisbane’s John Crawford Marine and Riviera Syndication, this has proven to be an accurate guide during 30 odd years of selling boats. Mr Russell said at any given point in time he could report on the industries that were doing well in the marketplace because it was those industries that were buying boats. During the late 1990s and in the early days of syndication, this form of boat ownership was generally associated with time share and was largely overlooked by the market. With the passage of time, the syndication market became more professional and was introduced by major manufacturers such as Riviera. Sophisticated clients began seriously considering the merits of buying an equity share in a luxury boat. Riviera Syndication also have syndicated Rivieras in most major centres around Australia where an owner of a share in a new Riviera 5800 Sport Yacht in Perth can exchange usage with an owner of the same boat in Sydney, Sanctuary Cove or Hamilton Island.

Riviera Jacaranda Experience

A colourful display of dancers and entertainers paraded through Grafton’s tree-lined streets for the 76th annual Jacaranda Festival where 58 Riviera enthusiasts enjoyed the festivities. A fleet of 15 Rivieras ranging in size from 33 feet to 56 feet made the 130 nautical mile journey from the Gold Coast south to Grafton on November 4, for R Marine Queensland’s annual five-day Jacaranda Experience. R Marine Queensland event organiser Melinda Jones said ‘with a decent swell, ocean wind and overcast sky looming around the Gold Coast Seaway walls it was onward bound for day one's destination Yamba. The next morning, the fleet wound their way up the Clarence River, passing under the landmark Harwood Bridge and heading for their final anchorage, Grafton, which is about 42 nautical miles up the Clarence River. The following morning it was time to up anchor and leave Grafton. The fleet returned back down the river to Yamba where they berthed for the night and visited the well known Pacific Hotel for dinner. Riviera CEO John Anderson said Riviera dealers around the world organised these experiences to encourage Riviera owners to explore new waterways, meet new friends and gain confidence in their boats. In 2011 our R Marine dealers in Australia and New Zealand have a full and fun packed calendar of events planned for Riviera owners.

Viking Sea and Truck

Persistent northwest winds draining the Bass River have made navigating to Atlantic City a little more challenging lately, limiting departure times from the factory to full flood tides. Frigid temperatures have created a layer of skim ice most mornings contributing more issues, but nothing could stand in the way today of delivering Norby, hull number 16 in the Viking 82 Convertible series. While 82016 will travel on its own bottom to southern climes, our first 42 Open at the end of the production line awaits its windshield glass, which will be installed in the morning. Upon completion of this task, the 42 Open with its Cummins diesels and Zeus pod drive propulsion system will cruise south at average speeds of 50 knots on a flat-bed truck to the Viking Yacht Service Center in Riviera Beach, Florida, for its tower installation by Palm Beach Towers.

New Model: Abati 64 Sessantquatro Fly

Abati Yachts continues to bring bigger traditional lobster looking yachts, and after launching the bigger flybridge 58, presents its much awaited 64 Fly flagship. Worth to note that Abati has been very clever in this task with the small and successful 46 model. The Abati 64 Fly designed as all the range by architect Carlo Ciuti, takes a lot from the smaller Abati and presents a nice cross over of classic hints as the flared bow, the curved shear line, and modern touches as the sloop stern with tender garage, and the versatile interior. Inside it presents two choices for a three, or four double cabins. In both options the interior is much similar for the only fact that the fourth cabin takes the place of the laundry room located to port side of the lower deck. Improve-it = Azimut 62S

Azimut present an improved important world first, using the ZF4000 pod propulsion on its 62S model. This is the third improvement to the 2005 launched 62S which follows the addition of a three cabins layout introduced three years ago. The 4000 is the latest flagship pod drive from ZF with a power receiving output up to 1200hp, making the German company able to propel sizes from sixty to one hundred feet. The Azimut 62S was the first tested boat with the ZF4000 pod, and in this test considerable improvements where shown in speeds, efficiency, and handling versus a same Cats 1015hp powered with V-drive shafts in propeller tunnels. Speed improvement was 2.5 knots at a max 36.5 versus 34 on shafts, with cruising gaining the same digits at 31.5 at the same revolutions per hour on engine. Another data is the less draft of seven centimeters of the ZF pod version. Last but not least is the turning circle data which is reduced considerably, this being done at top speed of 36 knots and using only ninety meters of radius with ZF4000 pods, versus the 205 meters of the shafts at 34 knots. Only negative factor is the weight which increases by 1300kg for a total of 30.8 tons versus 29.5 on shafts at a medium displacement load.

Project: Moonen 82 Alu

Moonen Shipyards in the Netherlands announce the order for a new 25 metre fast hull, aluminium built super yacht, the 82 Alu. This new Moonen will be capable of reaching 25 knots and have an exceptional range for a fast yacht, being able to cruise much further than vessels of an equivalent size and speed. The fleet of high speed Moonen's has been growing in recent years, with several custom built all aluminium yachts. It was the vision of Moonen to create an aluminium range of yachts called the Alu-series which started with the 94 Alu. As any new Moonen the 82 Alu follows interest and order from a customer. The Moonen 82 Alu will combine a high degree of displacement comfort with an option to go at 25 knots. As the owners are also looking for low fuel consumption, the hull needs to be very efficient at low speeds. The design for the hull is the subject of extensive research work, including line models. A stringent testing programme is also underway as the yard gears up to start building this exciting new project. Launching is scheduled for 2012.

Improve-it = Dellapasqua DC11 SL

Dellapasqua improves the DC11 SL by polishing some exterior details. These new changes concern the window profile now more sports looking, and the radar arch being made of fiberglass. As is expected the Italian, Adriatic sea based builder does not change its deep hull shape, and the spacious well planned interiors. The inside of the DC11 SL, or to say better the lower deck are also a bit on the unique side for a shaft driven motor cruiser measuring twelve meters overall available with a three cabin lower deck option. Although the third cabin bunk is a small affair for kids. A two cabin with lower deck galley is also available. Power is twin diesel engines up to a maximum of 550hp each.

Project: Rodman 20m Navetta

After presenting the Spirit line a couple of months ago, and the Muse range in 2006 Rodman continue its efforts to expand and present a diversity of yacht styles with the new Navetta line. For this new project Rodman Polyships entrusted a Spanish firm with Barcelona Yacht Design tasked for the design of this new line which has a plan of having three models in the near future. So far we are being shown the rendering of the first twenty metre model, but a 24 and a 30 meters are also on plan. These last two models will put Rodman on the Super Yacht map, having at the moment the 74 Muse designed by Fulvio De Simoni as its largest model. The 20m Navetta will have a total length including the very large aft bathing platform of 23 metre and can be handled with a standard yachting licence. An explorer appearance abound in this new model, which is mixed up well with modern thinking thanks to large glassed surfaces on the main deck. But don't be mistaken the 20m Navetta is full of modern yacht flair in and out, and its speed is not slow at all. Inside the 20m Navetta will feature four guest cabins with owners suite to midship, and a VIP to fore. A crew lobby with cabin, small galley and saloon is to be found aft, along with a fourth double guest cabin located to starboard. The main deck is a split level saloon with the standard welcoming relaxing area aft, and dining, galley and helm station to fore. Tender stowage is on the flybridge, although the large bathing platform gives space for a second tender, or to use the fly for large entertainment areas. Twin Man 1360hp engines will power the 20m Navetta with the builder and designer estimating a top speed of 25 knots, and a cruise of 20.

New Model: Sealine F42

One of the most expected end of the year debutant's was the Sealine F42, replacement to the F42/5, and new model which continues the minimal styling as started with SC35 presented in 2007. The SC35 amid criticisms from the brand fans and aficionados has sold over two hundred units so far since its launch, which considering recent times is a huge success. Sealine has followed the eleven meters sports cruiser design theme with the SC47, F46, and now the F42. As is for this new model Sealine follow themes of the F46 in a little smaller package, loads of natural light interior, spacious aft deck, large flybridge, and pod propulsion. The real difference is the lower deck, which moves the owners stateroom to fore, and replaces the full beam mid ship suite with a three berth cabin having a double and a single berth. Power choices are twin Volvo 370 or 435hp choices both with IPS pods propulsion. But Sealine have also said during the Southampton show, that a Cummins ZF pods choice should follow.

Benetti inaugurated a new semi-displacement line, entirely made of aluminum with the new 47m Imagination hull FB501. The first model FB 501 for this new series has been delivered to her owner in mid July 2010. Imagination should be considered the evolution of the Golden Bay line designed by Stefano Natucci, who also signed the new 47-meter yacht. The interiors, completely customized according to the owner’s needs, have been designed by Francois Zuretti, and feature a six double cabins plan. Surely innovative is the owners room having a private terrace with jacuzzi on the fore peak deck. The yacht has exterior lines that are original both in their conception and in form. Class 1 - Dubai Grand Prix

Race 1
Arif Al Zafeen and Nadir Bin Hendi today underlined why they are triple World Champions with a faultless flag-to-finish win in race 1 of the Emirates/Dubai Duty Free Dubai Grand Prix. The Fazza pairing, who secured the 2010 Class 1 World title two weeks ago in Abu Dhabi, produced an effortless performance dominating the race from the start, completing the 12 lap, 50.42Nm race in 34mins 39.78secs at an average speed of 160.53kmh. Today's twentieth career win for Al Zafeen and Bin Hendi, already Victory Team's most successful partnership, makes them the third most successful partnership in the sport behind Steve Curtis and Bjorn Gjelsten. With the Champions out front and heading off into the distance, the race for the podium was fought out between Team Abu Dhabi and GSG Ceramic Design. The battle was eventually won by Team Abu Dhabi's Rashed Al Tayer and John Tomlinson, producing yet another impressive outing, improving on their third place in qualifying to take second place, their second podium in five race starts. After a disastrous morning practice session which saw GSG Ceramic design sidelined after a blown engine, a podium finish for Guido Cappellini and throttleman Giampaolo Montavoci, on his 51st birthday, was more than they had expected.
But their podium celebrations were short lived after GSG Ceramic Design failed post race scrutineering for a technical infringement relating to the restrictor, blow off valve and air box size specifications, and was subsequently disqualified. The post-race ruling elevates Welmax's Kolbjorn Selmer and Jorn Tandberg, who earlier in the day clinched the 2010 Edox Pole Position Championship to third spot, ahead of Negotiator in fourth, with Relekta and Skydive 2010 completing the top six. There was disappointment for MITI/GiorgiOffshore who stopped after three laps.

Race 2
Arif Al Zafeen and Nader Bin Hendi brought down the curtain on the 2010 UIM Class 1 World Powerboat Championship with their ninth win of the season on a day of mixed emotions at the Emirates/Dubai Duty Free Dubai Grand Prix. On the first anniversary of the tragic loss of powerboat champions Mohammad Al Mehairi and Jean-Marc Sanchez, the Dubai Victory Team's Fazza crew wanted to mark the occasion with a win dedicated to their team-mates. And on a day when Class 1 produced the race of the season, they delivered a fitting tribute to Al Mehairi and Sanchez winning from the front despite a titanic effort by Edox Pole Position Champions Kolbjorn Selmer and Jorn Tandberg in Welmax. The Norwegians pushed the UAE stars all the way losing out by just 3.81s after 67.74Nm of intense competition. Fazza wrapped up the 21st Class 1 win of his career with Al Zafeen at an average speed of 178.38kmph. Win number nine in 2010 also secured the Middle East Class 1 Championship for Fazza to add to the World and European crowns they had in the bag prior to the race. But the victory was never a forgone conclusion with the Welmax crew piling on the pressure throughout the race as they claimed second by just over fifteen seconds from Italians Guido Cappellini and Giampaolo Montavoci in GSG Ceramic Design in third. Behind the two leaders GSG Ceramic Design's Guido Cappellini and Giampaolo Montavoci produced their second impressive performance of the weekend to make it two podiums from six outings together this season. It was a stunning finale to a Class 1 season that has seen Bin Hendi and Al Zafeen win 75% of the races they have started and take the world title by a record 96 points over their nearest rivals. While Fazza and Welmax were having their own private battle at the front of the field, there were other bragging rights being fought over elsewhere. With their closest rivals Talib Al Sayed and Abdullah Al Mehairbi sitting out the final two races of the season after crashing in Abu Dhabi, Italians Giovanni Carpitella and Luca Fendi needed just four points to claim second spot in the World Championship and they grabbed the overall silver medal by claiming fifth in the race in British boat Negotiator. It meant Al Sayed and Al Mehairbi claimed third in the world in SkyDive Dubai. In the Middle East Championship, Team Abu Dhabi's Rashed Al Tayer and John Tomlinson claimed overall second place behind Fazza thanks to a hard-earned sixth place despite starting well behind the field thanks to a propeller problem on the first lap. Third place in the Middle East series goes to Selmer and Tandberg. Fourth place for Skydive 2010 was a marked improvement on yesterday's performance, but there was frustration for MITI/GiorgiOfshore completing just four laps before an engine problem ended their race, with Relekta stopping six laps later with a gearbox problem.

Boat Review: Nord West 420 Flybridge

Presentation
A total different flybridge cruiser under the waterline, this is how Nord West set to build its 420 Flybridge model launched in the fall of 2005. The start for the launch of this model could not have been better being awarded Boat of the Show at Stockholm, Scandinavia in 2005, and two years later to this taking Motorboat of the Year Flybridge under 50ft for twice in a row in 2007, and 2008. So far no other boat has managed to take the IPC Awards from Motor Boat and Yachting and Motor Boats Monthly twice since they started them in 2000. The revolution of the 420 Flybridge is its accommodation, handling, economy to run, and very good top speed thanks to efficient Volvo stern drive or IPS pods propulsion. Many will tell you that stern drive are not good for flybridge but thanks to its length, good hull efficiencies, and new technologies Nord West managed to over come this obstacle and create a unique model in this size. This uniqueness in the 420's hull which was also the first flybridge boat to be equipped with IPS pods, and thanks to this also created a three cabin interior with all the berths being non bunk. Something still hard to find today and impossible in 2005 for a boat measuring thirteen meters.
Accommodation
Interior comfort is a big selling point to any motor cruiser, and thanks to its propulsion use Nord West creates unique spaces in the lower deck of the 420 Flybridge. But cosiness is predominant in all areas here, is also part of the Nordic nature of the 420 Flybridge. Welcoming you with a huge bathing platform aft where is possible to stow a large tender, two steps up lead you to a very cosy cockpit where an L-shaped settee is to be found to port side. To starboard is an integrated stairway which leads to the extended flybridge which has a central helm station with two co-pilot seats at both sides, and a spacious again cosy U-shaped settee aft. Worth of note is the luxurious unusual wood fitting out found in the exterior with the thick teak railing and toe rails aft being a feature of the Nord West 420 Flybridge.
Going inside into the main deck living area you find the saloon which is entered via a two part stainless steel patio door. Here natural light is abundant thanks to the all around windscreen windows which makes well for interior driving as well to create a nice atmosphere with the rich selected and varnished mahogany wood finishing. A C-shaped dinette to port, galley opposite with hidden wash basin and hob, entertainment area with flat TV on top, and the lower interior fully equipped helm station to starboard makes for the inside plan of the main deck.
A central corridor with three steps leads from the main to the lower deck, this having the three double cabins, and two heads. Forward is the owners suite; which features a central island double berth and personal shower head. Looking to aft and located to mid ship are two identical double cabins; which impress for the size, headroom and comfort. A guest second shower head with cubicle shower which is identical in size to the owners en-suite completes the spacious cabin sleeping area.
Performance
A big selling point for the Nord West 420 Flybridge is its performance which is to say the least, efficient, fast, and handles like a dream. This is so thanks to a different propulsion choice for what concerns a flybridge motor cruiser, and a lightly narrower to the usual beam. Two engines, and two propulsion choices characterize the 420 Flybridge. You can have it with Volvo D6 370hp in stern drive or IPS pod drives, or D6 435hp in IPS600 version only. Being a flybridge I would prefer the IPS version versus the stern drive especially for what concerns close quarters marina manoeuvring. Although latest generation modern stern drive which feature joysticks giving independent movement, and a powerful bow thruster will surely make things easier with this configuration, and some gains at the pump. The fastest and most efficient choice is the stern drive twin 370hp which gives a top speed of 36 knots, and a best cruise of 26 knots giving 345 nautical miles of range. My preferred 435hp IPS600 choice with 65hp more horses per engine gives a one digit less 35 knots top speed and a best economy cruise of 24 knots giving a 301 nautical miles range. The IPS500 370hp top speed is still fast giving a 32 knots, and a very efficient best cruise at 26 knots giving 298 nautical miles. Handling of the Nord West 420 Flybridge is impeccable and if you want a sports boat steering on a flybridge its very hard to do better then this.

Competition
Surely if I did the review for the Nord West 420 Flybridge in 2006 the list below will be a lot less and will only feature shaft driven cruisers with a third bunk cabin. But in the last two years some builders are following Nord West putting IPS on flybridge models, and this is creating some interesting competition. Criteria here is for a flybridge motor cruiser measuring over all thirteen meters and with three cabins.
Absolute 43 Fly - new in 2010, Med modern minimal looks, fixed hard top on fly
Astondoa 44 Fly - shafts or IPS, spacious main deck, Med looks
Carnevali 130 - shafts, more a two cabin boat, third cabin option is bunk
Dellapasqua DC12 SL - three or two cabin, classic deep Vee hull, feels big
Galeon 440 Fly - shafts or IPS, Tony Castro hull and design, fit out options inside
Intermare 43 - 3 or 2 cabins choice, third cabin bunk, spacious aft deck
Majesty 44 - Middle East offer, bunk third cabin, shafts
Prestige 440 - shafts, two or three cabins, third bunk cabin, Peters hull
Rodman 44 Muse - IPS pods, modern looks by Fulvio De Simoni
Starfisher ST45 Cruiser - flagship from this Portugal builder, IPS
Storebro 435 Commander - 2 or 3 cabin, spacious living, internal stair case, shafts
WILD CARD: Viking 42 Convertible - sportfish, ZF pods, 2 or 3 cabins
Conclusion
When Nord West set the project for the 420 Flybridge a lot of input and research was carried out by the Swedish builder in order to present a top of the class flybridge motor boat. The results are for all to see and the Nord West 420 Flybridge apart scoring points for its handling and accommodation layout with the dedicated press and taking three prizes in this feat, also took great care to offer an economic to run flybridge motor cruiser. Considering its performance which translates in less fuel at the pump and the comforts it offers at less length the 420 Flybridge real winner here is the customer who chooses this very clever Benny Martinsson project.

Class 1 - Dubai Preview

With the 2010 UIM Class 1 World title already decided, teams now turn their attentions on the Edox Pole Position and Middle East Championships in the final qualifying session and two races of the season at this weekend's Emirates/Dubai Duty Free Dubai Grand Prix. Welmax's Kolbjorn Selmer and Jorn Tandberg will be looking to end their season on a high as they bid to become the first ever all-Norwegian pairing to win the Pole Position Championship and the first Norwegians to win a major trophy since Tandberg's European title success in 2008. They go into the final qualifying session of the year in an almost unassailable position with a 15-point lead over World Champions Fazza, knowing sixth place will give them the title. But 'playing it safe' is not written in the Selmer-Tandberg racing manual, with the Norwegians likely to maintain their flamboyant, marauding style as they go after a fifth consecutive win in qualifying and their first 'recorded' race win of the year. Having already secured the 2010 UIM Class 1 World and European Championships, Fazza's Arif Al Zafeen and Nadir Bin Hendi now focus their attentions on trying to successfully defend their Middle East title. But to do so they will have to come from behind and overhaul rivals and neighbours Team Abu Dhabi who, after two of four races, lead the Middle East title race by a slender four points. The Fazza pairing has dominated this season, their seven race wins moving them onto 19 career wins a piece, to climb above multiple World Champions Saeed Al Tayer, Ali Nasser and Khalfan Harib to become the most successful partnership in the history of the Victory Team. With the news from Victory Team that they have very sportingly thrown their resources behind helping to repair Negotiator - their main rival in the fight for the runners-up slot in the World Championship - and by doing so confirm that Skydive Dubai, the boat that collided with Negotiator, will not race - the battle for the remaining podium place in the overall World Championship standings looks to be a two-way fight between four Italians. Negotiator's Luca Fendi and Giovanni Carpitella grabbed third place on their debut outing together in race 1 in Abu Dhabi and currently hold third spot, 16 points adrift of Skydive Dubai. Assuming their boat is repaired and ready to race, they should be able to defend their 26-point advantage over Guido Cappellini and Giampaolo Montavoci in GSG Ceramic Design, and look the most likely of the two outfits to finish in the top three, and possibly steal second place from Skydive Dubai. Cappellini and Montavoci, podium finishers in the season-opener in Brazil, will be looking to erase the memory of a torrid and frustrating last Grand Prix beset by technical issues and will be looking to get back on track in Dubai. Whilst a top three finish in the World standings, to add to his second place in the Europeans, would be a remarkable achievement by Carpitella in a season that has seen him team-up with four drivers in two different boats. Zabo Racing go into the last Grand Prix of the season full of confidence and looking to build on their last performance after it all came good for the team in Abu Dhabi. A solid qualifying session and fourth place in race 1 was eclipsed by a simply brilliant drive in race 2 by Paul Gaiser and Christian Zaborowski in Relekta, which gave the Norwegian outfit their first podium of the year, putting them third overall in the Middle East standings. Fresh from their famous first win together in race 1 of the their home Grand Prix, Team Abu Dhabi's Rashed Al Tayer and American race-ace John Tomlinson will be determined to end their season with a flourish and a title. Since teaming-up in Italy they have developed a formidable partnership and will look to cut out the costly errors that lost them podium places in Italy and Abu Dhabi, as they defend their slender lead in the Middle East Championship. After a promising first outing for GiorgiOffshore's Nicola Giorgio with Sandro Sardelli, picking up valuable points in both races in Abu Dhabi, a last minute change of driver sees Tomaso Polli return to partner Giorgi for the second time this season. Mohammed Al Marri and Giorgio Manuzzi enjoyed an eventful first race weekend together in the new Victory design, Victory 2010, grabbing a podium in race 1 and then spectacularly crashing out at the start of race 2 in Abu Dhabi. With the boat fully repaired the Italian-Emirati duo are likely to be up at the front challenging for podium places, but will now run in the colours of the sidelined Skydive Dubai. The action starts with first practice on Thursday afternoon, a second practice on Friday morning is immediately followed by qualifying in the Edox Pole Position and Race 1 - 51.07Nm, 12 laps including one long lap.Ā A final practice on Saturday morning is followed by Race 2 - 68.56Nm, 16 laps, including two long laps.
