In heavy seas and breeze, the boat rode very comfortably, with T48 Talaria featuring a fuller bow with convex sections that reduce the rise and fall motion gives the boat a softer ride.  Accommodation is two cabin plans with owners room with en-suite bathroom located to fore, and a double guest cabins to starboard.  A galley is located below decks to port side, with a luxurious welcoming saloon on the main deck, behind the dual seat helm station.

New Launch: Spencer Yachts 70 Volvo hull.76

Showing the impact of custom sportfish boat builders, the Spencer 70 Volvo was actually commissioned by the Swedish engine manufacturer and its maiden name is indeed Penta.  Spencer have always been among the most innovators of the Eastern North American custom builders, looking to the future and bringing ideas especially in this new model which come more from the pleasure world of yachting.  Those big windows to midships, central wind shield view to fore, and the pods says a lot of things how Spencer can innovate into the classic lines of his Carolina sport fisherman, if a client desires so.  The Spencer 70 Volvo presents a lower deck with three double cabins, having a full beam owners stateroom to midships.  A crew cabin is located to midships behind the owners room.  The Spencer 70 Volvo is powered by triple Volvo 900hp with forward looking IPS pods which tops a 38 knots max speed.  Interesting is that with this combination the Spencer carries almost half the horse power most sportfish of this size usually have. But to be honest this performance comes also on how weight conscious the Spencer 70 Volvo has been build.

Project: Trader 48 Signature

Trader shows project for an upcoming 48 Signature model, which will fill the gap between the 42 of the same range, and the fifty plus Sunliner series.  The 48 Signature will offer both low air draft and flybridge versions, while giving extended cruising potential with a whopping three thousand liters fuel capacity. No information on the interior is presented by Trader, but you can expect a lot of comforts thanks to a fifteen feet plus of beam, and an aft cabin owners room.

Project: Hatteras 95 Raised Pilothouse

Hatteras Yachts is proud to announce plans for a new 95 Raised Pilothouse model set to debut in 2013.  The 95 Raised Pilot House will also be Hatteras new flagship.  The new 95 Raised Pilothouse brings styling cues from her classic lineage into the 21st century, and is designed to set the standard for Hatteras next generation of motor yachts.  To say it more frankly there is a bit more Europe in this new Hatteras flagship especially in the lines of the super structure, but also the windows for lower cabin area suggest bring this design influence.  The 95 Raised Pilothouse is available in four or five guest cabins, depending if one chooses a main stateroom on the main deck or as standard below to midships.  Crew accommodation is located aft, with two cabins sleeping four.  Factory layout alternatives are available for the main deck, and the flybridge.  Power for the 95 Raised Pilothouse will be twin Cats 1900hp as standard which will give a max speed of 25 knots, or optional MTU 2600hp which increase wide open throttle by 4 knots.

INBUILD ~ Galeon 430 HTC Part 2 of 5

We continue the journey into the construction phase of the Galeon 420 HTC.  Again this construction showcase of hull one of the Tony Castro designed 420 HTC shows the upper structure which will be the major difference along with the aft deck of this model to the 420 Fly. While last time we showed the preparation of the tooling, today we present the release and the finalization of the first mold.  The 420 HTC will be a fully enclosed sport  cruiser or as the initials say a hard top coupe.  At aft it will have a patio door which opens or closes all as the weather permits, or the owner desires.  At top it will have an opening electric sunroof.  Its main living area will be on the main deck, with all sleeping accommodation located below. Tony Castro and the Galeon team made the 420 HTC to share look and have a quality feel as a  baby version of the much acclaimed 700 Raptor model, the ex Polish builder flagship from a couple of years ago.

New Model: Prestige 550 Flybridge

Following on the very nice looks of the 500 series models, Prestige 550 Flybridge is similar in many respects to its smaller 500 sister, from the looks to the layout.  Basicaly on the 550 everything is just bigger.  Designed again by Prestige trio of designer companies; Garroni, J and J, and  JP the 550 presents itself as a practical good looking flybridge motor yacht with its wrap around all view windshield playing again a distinctive characteristic.  Prestige did also to stick on the layout of the 500 on the 550 offering some exquisite details which are quite hard to find at this size; like the separate entrance to the owners midships full beam stateroom, and the much appreciated very socializing astern galley on the main deck saloon.   Power and more so propulsion makes the difference in the 550 Flybridge, with twin Cummins 600hp and ZF Pods against the Volvo units of the 500.

Project: F&S 50 Hull 19

In recent years FandS from Denver has been one of the most busy custom Sportfisherman builders.  The reasons of this are many; but the variable Vee shaped hull, fast performances, and a bit of a modern take on the Carolina hull stand out.  Hull number nineteen for FandS will be a 50 footer to be named Triple F.  This new FandS 50 first presented as a 48 plan, is designed by Matthews Yacht Design who presented a three double cabins lower deck plan with owners room to fore, a single shower head, and the third cabin being a bunk double to port side. The engines although Volvo pods will still be positioned to midships.  FandS has still not given any numbers but most of its models have always been in the forty knots max speed range.  Can we imagine the same here?

New Model: Steeler NG43

Always in the lime light in the bigger super sizes, in recent times Dutch builders have also gathered attention in the smaller sub fifty feet sizes.  Steeler is one of the builders coming from Holland who makes part of the resurgence in the smaller cruiser sizes.  Steeler as the name of the Steenwijk located builder suggests builds of steel and the NG43 is its most recent model.  A hard top sport cruiser in looks, the NG 43 offers a semi displacement hull suitable for inland waterways and sea navigation.  The accommodation is a traditional four plus two layout. Two guest cabins below sleeping four and a convertible C-shaped settee in the saloon.  The Steeler SG43 is standard powered by a single Yanmar 110hp, but a twin Steyr 250hp diesel engine has been the choice of hull number two.

Project: Kadey-Krogen 44 AE

Kadey-Krogen Yachts proudly announces a new model in the company's Advanced Ergonomics series, the Krogen 44 AE.  Building on and inspired by the success of the Krogen 48 AE which was introduced last year, the 44 AE is highlighted by a new galley layout and an even more generously sized flybridge.  The new Krogen 44 AE replaces the 44, which had 26 hulls launched.  The new 44 AE is a result of a collaborative effort between owners, prospective owners and the Kadey-Krogen in-house design team lead by naval architect Dave Glasco. There are more than fifty ergonomic and technical changes that differentiate the 44 AE from her predecessor. New, advanced ergonomic highlights include a full walk-thru cockpit boarding doors, walk-in engine room access, a companion seat next to the helm chair on the flybridge plus corner bench seating with a table perfect for entertaining, and the galley's repositioned starboard-side four-burner Viking range and an eighteen cubic foot refrigerator that opens to port for the chef's convenience. LED lighting and a new engine room ventilation system utilizing intake and exhaust axial fans headline a substantial list of technical upgrades.  Owners choose from several spacious guest stateroom layouts: a den/office arrangement, a dedicated queen berth suite, or "Jack and Jill" berths for the grand kids. Kadey-Krogen provides flexible options for the guest stateroom so owners may configure the space to best fit their lifestyle and cruising plans.

New Model: Marlow 97 E Explorer

Marlow presents its largest build to date, with the launch of the 97 E Explorer in the fall of 2011.  Marlow's flagship has already seen the hands for two owners, with hull number two delivered shorty after one.  The 97 E Explorer continues Marlow philosophy of classic US looks,  semi displacement efficient hulls, and spacious interior volume.  Accommodation is for a standard seven double cabins layout, with three crew rooms sleeping six members.  But the US company does make custom modifications as requested by clients on smaller models, so I imagine changes on the 97 are possible.  The Marlow 97 E Explorer is powered by twin Cats 1760hp engines which thanks to a rather narrow beam hull at this size it can achieve a respectable 29 knots top speed.  A cruise of 23 knots is possible with a range of 950 nautical miles, while a slow displacement speed of 9 knots gives a transatlantic 4000 nautical miles.
Technical Data:
LOA - 30.7 m (100.9ft)

Improve-it = Tiara 3900 Convertible

Tiara adds an important new option for its 3900 Convertible model, the much appreciated mezzanine feature in the aft deck.  The mezzanine is one of the most sought features in today's convertibles creating a relaxing support area to the guests, or a rest zone for the fisherman.  Seeing this Tiara did well to add to the small of its two model Convertible flybridge models this option.  The 4800 Convertible already features this option.  The Tiara 3900 Convertible with this makes it also one of the smallest production sportfish flybridge to have the mezzanine.  The Tiara 3900 Convertible is an appreciated entry level flybridge sportfish cruiser with a well laid out two stateroom layout with an owners room located to fore.  The 3900 Convertible is also among the few sportfish cruiser to have a forward view on its main deck, thanks to a third part of its windshield being glassed.

Project: Grand Banks 43 Heritage Europa

Grand Banks announce a new addition to its Heritage Series.  The 43 Heritage EU follows in the footsteps of the extremely successful 2007 launched 41 EU, a groundbreaking model that introduced pod drive propulsion to the trawler yacht category. It is infact its evolution in many terms with enhancements being made to the 41 to making it become the new 43, which is set for launch in 2013. The 43 EU features a larger cockpit with increased storage, and the addition of a second head to its two-stateroom layout.  The new 43 will also have a larger master cabin, bigger flybridge and a number of other enhancements both inside and out.  There is also the addition of new vertical shaped view windows to midships.  Grand Banks have not announced engines for the 43, but the 41 is powered by a twin 380hp Cummins power with ZF pods, so I would imagine a similar set up.

Steyr Motors has successfully redesigned its 6-cylinder generation and to present it to us. The renown Austrian Diesel engine manufacturer Steyr Motors keeps track with its own slogan “Innovation with lightness” and has successfully redesigned its 6-cylinder series during the last 18 month. After an intensive test period the production started in January 2012 and MO became SE.  Compared to the MO-series the new SE 6-cylinder series appeals not only due to its stylish appearance!  The all new SE-series is based on there inforced Monoblock-design which is more than ever the key for a robust and durable operation under highest load conditions. The Monoblock received redesigned intake channels and this together with the upgraded high-pressure multifuel Unit Injector results in a significant improvement of the efficiency, in some models and load conditions up to 30 %.  The SE Series will be available in five units from 120 up to 231hp.  The above unit is the SE236E40,  delivering 231hp at 4100 rpm.

Project: Toy 44 Tender

Toy shows the very interesting project for a 44 feet model called the Tender.  The North Italian Toy says this 44 project represents a hybrid between a down East lobster boat in looks, and day boat tender practicality which can be used for a Villa or a large super yacht.  Designed by Nauta the line of the 44 is indeed an all lobster boat, but the unusualy big rub rail, flash fore deck, and open aft deck do suggest a very daily fast use of the new Toy 44.  Still it is worth to say not to be mistaken as the 44 Tender still offers over night accommodation for four in two cabins below, in the many layouts which will be offered to this model.  Power for the Toy 44 Tender is from twin 500hp Cummins engines, which give a top speed of 32 knots, and cruise at 26 giving a very good medium range of 700 nautical miles.  Impressive range in this size, and at this speed, which I cannot contradict due to the builder not advising fuel capacity.

New Model: Aqualum 38

Aqualum is a South American boat builder from Argentina, and after showing its 38 as a project it finally launches this model.  Designed by Fabian Conte, the Aqualum 38 should follow up on the success that the 35 model provided for the South American boat builder especially in Southern Europe, thank to a well planned strategy of a competitive price.  The 38 is a flybridge motor cruiser with a traditional two cabins layout. But here is also an interesting how the galley although in a lower level was used in a more astern position, giving more space to the cabins located to fore.  Power is from twin Volvo 300 or optional 435hp with shaft line propulsion. Speed is a max of 32 knots with the optional large units.

Project: Fairline 45 Targa Open

Fairline will be adding a 45 Targa Open to its range with the upcoming introduction of an all new twin cabin, two en-suite model scheduled for launch during Spring 2013.  This model should replace the 44 Targa and headline news in this see the British builder return back to Volvo IPS pods.  For those that don't know the 44 Targa GT was introduced with the Volvo pods after two years of testing the propulsion, then to be changed to a stern drives set up back in the fall of 2009. Key features of the 45 Targa will include a dinghy tender garage able to accommodate a tender up to the weight and size of a Williams 285 Jet RIB, which is no small feat for a sport cruiser this size. The 45 Targa Open will be powered by Volvo 370 or 435hp, with IPS 500 and 600 drive units.

New Model: Galeon 380 Fly

Another clever new model from Galeon and Tony Castro, this is how to sum up the 380 Fly which continues the Polish builder third generation phase into all its range.  The new phase was started up with a flagship for Galeon and British designer Tony Castro with the ever important 640 Fly in 2007, and then moved on into smaller and bigger models accordingly.  The 380 Fly is the latest and was presented in Dusseldorf past January replacing one of its best sellers the 390 Fly.  With the 380 Fly, Galeon sets a high bar to itself and the competition thanks to a hard to find three double cabins layout.  Considering the beam of 3.70 meters and the over all length of just over 39 feet, Galeon also did not go into new extremes to fitting out a third cabin in such a size.  The cost for this is a galley up layout, and one shower head. Making the three cabin choice more of a family option.  The galley up though is always a more socializing affair then the usual lower deck layout.  The owners room is to fore, and one normal size guest cabin is to starboard, with the cuddy third being separated by a curtain.   Engine power starts from twin 220 up to 435hp with more economic to run stern drive, or less maintenance shafts.
Technical Data:
LOA - 11.99 (39.3ft) with extra extended bathing platform

Project: GTMM 39

GTMM is a new company with a lot of heritage onto its shoulders, as the initials stand for Giovanni Theodoli Magnum Marine.  With this new company the young Theodoli takes a bit of Magnum back to its roots, and return to the original powerboat start as Don Aronow founded it back then in 1964.  At first GTMM had to do the revisit of the old Magmum 27, but with this 39, and a 38 also in project stages will we see more coming from the brand.  The GTMM 39 will feature an aggressive two step all powerboat hull, and a close canopy competition Evolution style version will also be available.  It would be nice to see a GTMM race in a very competitive race format if this will be provided again. As so far there seems to be no real Endurance Powerboat championship going on.  GTMM is not saying much for the inside layout of the standard production version of the 39, but they did advise that all models are all very customizable to client requests.  Power options start from twin 535 up to 1300hp, from Mercury Racing, and diesel choices from Cummins and Yanmar.  Propulsion is stern drives.

Real Offshore Powerboat Racing?

It is with sadness that I say, that so far there is no news for a 2012 racing calendar of Powerboat Endurance Class, previously known as Offshore Grand Prix in 2011, Powerboat P1 from 2003 till 2009, and Class 1 in the eighties and before that. Since the class has been left over by the P1 promotion their seems to be no solid ground founded.  Pity, as I think the developments that happen in this class being it the production open canopy and 90 mph speed limited Super Sport, or the closed cockpit no speed limit prototype Evolution, are very close to what can be applied to real boats being they cruisers or more faster versions.
The Endurance Powerboat series is an evolution of the Offshore Class 1 series from the eighties, and or before that.  When mono hulls where at use, and many designers and boat producers built a name from this class.  You can start when offshore boat became a boom high society sport in the sixties with such figures as Bertram, and Don Aronow from the US or Gagliotta and Levi from Italy competing to build the faster and most seaworthy boat.  Then in the eighties we had the new school of Fabio Buzzi and his SeaTek diesel power, and such designers as Don Shead and the Cuv 38 feet series which is still at today considered a winning boat.  Note all these names made a trademark after this in designing pleasure cruising boats as well.
We will see what the future will bring, the economy is not good all over the place but I still expected UIM to pull of a calendar similar to what they did in 2010.  Which without the spectacle the promoters bring, was a good success on the sport and racing scale, and much appreciated by all the teams and passion people involved.
