Grand Banks Update from Miami

Riva 170 Year of Emotions
Using the word ‘legend’ to talk about Riva is far too easy; it is much more difficult to describe the factors that perpetuate this legend. 170 words are printed in the very first pages of the book: each of them can be considered as a brick making up a large, constantly expanding castle. Try to read them in a sequence and you will see how easily you will visually and emotionally associate them with Riva. This is how Ferretti Group’s CEO Ferruccio Rossi introduces the book that enshrines the history of Riva, written by those who have experienced the brand’s 170-year history first-hand. The book includes 170 statements and unique pictures that can be browsed through or read in a sequence to take a step into the very heart of a brand which represents one of the most significant chapters in the history of Made-in-Italy production. Excerpts of letters, dedications, acknowledgements, and feelings put on paper, all sharing one common denominator: ‘Legend’; the pleasure of being onboard a Riva yacht, an icon of quality and design, pure craftsmanship and engineering perfection. A tribute to those who have put their heart, soul and expertise to the service of boatyards for more than a century. As you turn every page you will come in contact with the core values of a brand, a world leader in the yachting industry since time immemorial, still capable of constantly striving towards the future: tradition, family, exclusiveness, quality, design, care for details, lifestyle.  Owners, dealers, designers, managers, engineers, photographers, collectors, workers, sports champions, and celebrities have joined their voices to testify how delightful it is for everyone of them to associate Riva with the ‘Legend’. The pictures, taken over a 60-year period, are also a tribute to Cantieri Riva and to its historical and current models. These pictures allow us to take a journey through past and present times from very unusual perspectives: historical and modern pictures, snapshots of details and events, black & white ad colours spots create a bridge between the past and the present.

Sanlorenzo Environmental Award Winner
Since 1958, Sanlorenzo shipyard is a leader in the production of strictly tailor-made motor yachts. The Yard's entry for the 2012 Environmental Award Edition is their most ecological model in water and environmental protection: the Sanlorenzo SL94. With her unmistakable Sanlorenzo lines, the SL94 exemplifies elegance, balanced volumes and the proper ratio between covered and open spaces. Sanlorenzo shipyard combined new styling elements in perfect harmony with a series of innovations that continue to leave the yard's family feel of yacht planning unaltered. The Sanlorenzo SL94 was designed taking full advantage of the increasing environmental awareness that characterizes today's yachting industry, with the Sanlorenzo Technical Department responsible for the development of the SL94's eco-friendly systems. In awarding the Trophy, the UIM made special note of the electronic probes used to monitor and prevent oil spillage and the electric actuators used to avoid hydraulic oil leakage from the steering systems. On board sewage treatment is carried out by an IMO approved plant, while fuel usage and tank levels for the main engines and the gensets are continually monitored from the wheelhouse. Other important key points are the climatization plant optimization and the low energy lighting system. It is also important to underline that the Sanlorenzo SL94 is produced with fiberglass structures characterized by a low-emissions manufacturing process: the deckhouse and deck are made using vacuum-infusion resin, and the entire hull is built with the vacuum-infusion process using vacuum bags for PVC bonding.

Sea Ray Wins Innovation Award
Sea Ray, the world’s leading manufacturer of superior quality pleasure boats, is pleased to announce that it was honored for innovative achievement by the National Marine Manufacturers Association and Boating Writers International at this year’s 72nd annual Progressive Insurance Miami International Boat Show& Strictly Sail. Sea Ray received a 2013 Innovation Award for its new 370 Venture featuring a patent-pending design with two concealed Mercury Verado outboards. In honoring the 370Venture in Miami, the judges noted that the boat uniquely incorporates cutting-edge propulsion technology in a fiberglass express cruiser powered by fully concealed outboard engines. The Concealed Outboard Propulsion found aboard the 370 Venture combines the best traits of outboard and inboard power. The rewards are quieter operation, better shallow-water capabilities, lower maintenance costs and remarkable onboard space. In addition to this 2013 Innovation Award, Sea Ray won a 2012 Innovation Award for its Quiet Ride sound reduction technology. Other recent recognitions achieved by the company include the new 510 Sundancer being named an Editor’s Choice winner by the AIM Marine Group; the 410 Sundancer being named a Best Boat of 2012 by Boating magazine; and the 370 Venture being named the Boat of the Year 2012 by Boatingmagazine.

Sea Ray Next Wave
Sea Ray announced the launch of its Next Wave initiative during a media event on Thursday evening at the Miami International Boat Show. The event was hosted by Dustan McCoy, President and CEO of Brunswick Corporation and Andy Graves, President of the Brunswick Boat Group and Interim President of Sea Ray. Opening the event, McCoy was emphatic about Brunswick's commitment to the marine industry and particularly to Sea Ray as its flagship brand. He cited several Innovation Awards received by Brunswick's Sea Ray, Boston Whaler and Harris FloteBote brands earlier in the day as evidence of Brunswick's leadership and commitment to the industry. Graves followed McCoy's comments with the introduction of Sea Ray's Next Wave initiative, a product-focused campaign comprised of Innovative Thinking and Inspired Execution. Internal work on the project began in late 2011, and its public launch marked a 24-month commitment to enacting major innovation across all Sea Ray platforms, with the ultimate goal of redefining the boating experience. The public introduction of Next Wave included a series of new technologies and design breakthroughs that mark the first examples of Next Wave thinking in action. These include Quiet Ride™, first seen on the SLX Series, which reduces engine noise and vibration by nearly half; and SkyFlow Design™, first displayed on the award-winning 510 Sundancer, which eliminates the "cave" effect of most cruisers by blurring the line between indoor and outdoor spaces.  Additional Next Wave technologies include TabletTunes™, which is a standard feature aboard the 610 Sundancer and is available on every Sea Ray Yacht; Concealed Outboard Propulsion, modeled on Boating Magazine's Boat of the Year, the 370 Venture; Dynamic Running Surface, first available on the 230 SLX; and TrueJet, the product of a groundbreaking partnership between Sea Ray and Weber Motors, featured now on the 21 Jet.

Project: Riviera 565 SUV

Riviera’s design team are putting the finishing touches on the second model in the new SUV range, the sleek, stylish and spacious 565 SUV, which is due for release in May at the 2013 Riviera Festival of Boating, which is held to coincide with the Sanctuary Cove Boat Show. The 445 SUV was met with immediate popularity following its launch in August last year, and already eight having been sold internationally and around Australia.  Following this success Riviera was fast to present a larger 565 SUV project which bases its hull on that of the 53 Enclosed Flybridge. The new SUV range combines the performance blue water cruising abilities of the classic Flybridge with the fish raising abilities of the Offshore Express, and the single-level leisurely entertaining features of the popular Sport Yacht series, creating a vessel with a true bridge between all of these styles.  Featuring three cabins and two bathrooms, the new 565 SUV has a flexible accommodation plan with sleeping capacity from six to eight adults. The stately full-beam master suite features a king size island bed, large hull windows and optional opening port holes for cross ventilation, a walk-in robe, and lounge and television DVD player as standard.  The forward cabin has an optional layout with the choice of either a queen size island bed or a triple bunk bed arrangement.  The new 565 SUV has many clever design aesthetic features such as the sleek, low profile hardtop with two large manually sliding glass sunroof hatches, which bring an abundance of natural light and fresh air into the saloon. The large helm station to port has plenty of room for electronics including three display screens, controls and the Volvo joystick. There are four high-quality helm chairs, two of which swivel 180 degrees to face the saloon allowing occupants to join in the conversation in the saloon area. The saloon features an L-shaped lounge and dining area to port with storage below, on the starboard side is a three seat starboard side lounge. The aft galley, which features the most modern appliances with drawer refrigeration, convection microwave oven, optional drawer dishwasher, four plate cook top with extraction hood, top loading garbage bin, and soft close drawer runners for storage plus overhead storage lockers, and Corian bench tops throughout with infills over the sink allowing for extra bench space. A large awning window and glass sliding door opens the galley into the cockpit area, creating one large entertainment space.  A key design feature that sets this model apart is the expansive and uncluttered cockpit space with plenty of storage including, an insulated fish bin to starboard, plus clever storage inside the engine room hatch. The mezzanine seating to port also features a top loading refrigerated cool box under the seating. There is the option to have a barbecue centre in the transom with barbecue, sink, rubbish bin and storage or optional live bait tank or standard bin, as well as an optional hydraulic swim platform for a smaller tender.  Mr Ford said another clever design feature on this vessel was the full glass panel on the starboard side of the sliding door, which provides good visibility to both the transom corners from the helm.  The new 565 SUV’s décor gives a modern and contemporary feel. New Model: Monte Carlo MC5

It was without a doubt one of Dusseldorf most awaited World premiers, this is in short the Monte Carlo MC5.  This new MC5 aims to create a shorter bridge from current Beneteau motorboat owners, especially those in the Flyer line into the larger sized Monte Carlo range which spans currently up to 76 feet.  Designed as all the Monte Carlo brand series by Nuvolari Lenard the MC5 is characterized by latest trends in the interior and accommodation plan and hybrid exterior looks which put it them three styles; classic for the bow, sports for its low profile flybridge, and motor yacht.  A three double cabins plan, with a full beam owners stateroom characterize the lower deck.  A single berth crew cabin is located to aft.  The main deck is characterized by an astern galley as its main feature, and a saloon which can work as a relaxing lounge or dining area to port side of the helm.  Outside is all made in a well proportioned but one of the most innovative features is the wet bar and grill on the bathing platform.  Yes it is not the first time we see this but I think the MC5 manages to give it a new twist where we will see a couple of builders opting for this solution in the very near future.  Power is from twin Volvo 370 or optional 435hp with IPS pod drives.

New Model: Nord West 430 Flybridge

Nord West will launch a brand new 430 Flybridge motor cruiser at the boat show in Gothenburg taking place from the 2 till the 10th of February. The yard is well known for its production of high quality boats and will now launch a new, slightly larger powerboat to the multi prized 420 with the same high standard, smart design and luxurious comfort that can be expected from the Orust production builder. The 430 will feature the latest in technology installed: twin Volvo Penta IPS engines with joystick control for easy manoeuvring and through a touch of a button or the intuitive DPS system holding the boats position through a series of GPS signals. Nominated as the ‘Motor Boat of the Year’ in both 2007 and 2008 the Nord West 420 has been the inspiration for the now bigger sister together with the 430 SportsTop, which is the yards latest newest model with its successful sports design.  For the first time the yard will now present the new Nord West 430 Flybridge in the same generous hull as the SportsTop and with the remarkable seagoing capabilities and low fuel consumption of the famed 420.  To put it short the 430 hull is a tweeking and slight improvement of the 420 praised underwater shape.  The yard would also like to highlight improvements they have been working with such as reduced sound levels and vibrations. Much of the equipment onboard which normally is extra options on most other manufacturers are in fact standard on all Nord West models. This makes the Nord West 430 Fly on of the most comfortable boats on the market today. The 430 Fly represents the first new model that has been developed since the acquisition of Najad and the interior design will demonstrate how the merging of two strong brands lift each other to new levels of perfection in both design and technique. Smart solutions and spacious storage facilities and a fantastic craftsmanship is the hallmark of this yard. The owner of the yard, Mr. Benny Martinsson, who stands behind the design together with the yards own and very capable development team, have put emphasis on the social space in the cockpit, saloon and on the flybridge. Well sized cabins with more natural light invites for a more comfortable and harmonic atmosphere, and at the same time the new Fly is developed for an active boating life where you can feel comfort for a very long time. Power from this new Nord West model comes from Volvo 370, 400, and 435hp units in both stern drive or IPS pod propulsion.

New Model: Riviera 63 Enclosed Flybridge

Riviera launches the new 63 Enclosed Flybridge with a raft of engineering and design enhancements based on its predecessor the 61 and the updates on the recent 75 flagship. Riviera  describes the new 63 as a luxurious and highly capable long range offshore vessel, with many popular design cues taken from the fleet’s prestigious flagship, the 75. The new 63 features a galley positioned central to the party, a cockpit that is an extension of the live-aboard space inside, a master stateroom that is bathed in light and fresh air, an enclosed flybridge that serves as a sky lounge, and refinements to the hull that further enhance performance and sea keeping ability. The new galley is positioned aft, adjacent to the saloon bulkhead, and separated from the large sociable cockpit space by a hinged awning window and full tinted glass door. The result is an extension of light and space from outside in, with guests easily able to converse with whoever is in the galley. Opposite the galley to starboard there is a bar area with ice maker and fridge set under ergonomically raked flybridge stairs, with solid teak treads nested on flawless tig-welded stainless steel supports. A special feature of the saloon bar is an electric lift glassware cabinet which retracts into the varnished cabinetry while under way, yet rises to the occasion at the touch of a button. Forward of the bar there is a spacious U-shape lounge and dinette with seating for twelve well positioned to take advantage of the large TV mounted on the forward dash.  The very large main saloon is bright and airy, with 360 degree tinted windows and offering views from every seating angle and position. The new 63 has incorporated social seating into the cockpit, which is no longer the sole domain of the sports fisherman.  The cockpit now doubles as an alfresco dining experience, with optional opposing fore and aft facing mezzanine seating either side of a solid teak table.  The practicalities of a sport fisher with fully optioned fighting cockpit are enhanced with features like below deck self-draining fish bins, game chair mounting plate solidly glassed into the cockpit floor, and recessed toe kicks. An extensive options list covering rod holders, live bait tank wells and outriggers ensures the full versatility of the 63.  Overlooking the cockpit is the spacious enclosed flybridge, featuring forward helm and aft docking station.  The enclosed flybridge features a hinged awning window and glass door that bolt open to bring outdoors in and unify the space. Wrap around seating to port features folding arm rests with functional storage underneath and a drop down dinette table.  To starboard there is a wet bar with bottle and glass storage.  The aft docking station is located aft to the starboard side of the external flybridge door with excellent visibility of the cockpit and aft quarters of the boat behind. There is an option to upgrade to Palm Beach single side mount engine control levers, which are a favourite with sport fishermen. To port an aft-facing lounge accommodates two people.  Below deck's is a standard four cabin layout sleeping seven in the standard version, with the owners stateroom located to portside midships and featuring large big view windows.  The optional three cabin layout is available with extra space absorbed by the VIP guest cabin, to include a private lounge or a writing bureau. In engineering terms the 63 retains its original shaft drive configuration, and base power is twin 1015hp Caterpillar engines.

Improve-it = Cerri 102 Flying Sport

The year 2012 ended in the best possible way for Cerri, with the sale to a Russian owner of hull number 3 in the 102 Flyingsport line. The Cerri 102 hull number 3 Flyingsport represents a true revolution in the open yacht sector for the shipyard, where innovation and modernity have always been core values and guiding principles.  While this yacht's outer lines are the same of her sister’s, the concept of this new version is extremely innovative and takes to extremes the "FlyingSport" philosophy thanks to the owner's true ingenuity and its flawless interpretation by the creativity of the Cerri team.  The FlyingSport line introduced the concept of a fly bridge in open crafts as back as in 2004 with 86 model sold so far in over ten units.  This latest Cerri 102 now embodies the ultimate evolution of such a philosophy, no longer featuring two pilot stations, but only one on the fly bridge and replacing the second, on the main deck, with an innovative owner area that continues below deck with a really impressive private wellness area. From the highly panoramic cabin with glass sunroof, an internal staircase leads to the spacious wellness area, conceived as an "open air" circular "glass tube": a magnificent relaxation area with Turkish bath with chromotherapy and a sauna. Adjacent to the spa is the children’s room with changing top and a bed for a staff members, which thus completes the master suite.  The under deck night area, aft of the spa, has also been thoroughly rearranged: it now features two more VIP cabins with double bed and private head, which can be accessed via the staircase from the main deck salon. This night area is characterised by very spacious volumes and large windows offering a beautiful panoramic view.  The pilot station and the dining room are located on the fly bridge and are sheltered by a hard top especially designed to allow closing the sides and including an electronically operated sunroof. A Jacuzzi, located aft of the dining area, adds the final touch to the main deck.  Besides her innovative fly bridge, this yacht can also boast two pleasant outdoor areas: the aft cockpit on the main deck includes a comfortable sunbathing area and a dinette, while at the bow the wide lounge area with circular sofas is ideal to relax and chat while enjoying the utmost privacy. Two crew cabins with separate access and a galley fitted with all necessary equipment make up the service areas, while 2 MTU 2600 HP engines and the ZF Searex surface drives push the yacht to a cruising speed of approximately 30 knots with peaks of 38.

A Good Start

January 2013 in my mind looks better to that of 2012, thanks to the resurgence of the German economy in recent years and for having one of the largest boats shows on the planet take place in this period at Dusseldorf.  What happens in Germany should change the fortune of at least some production builders, and give signs for a solid year ahead.  Another good sign is also that some European economies look in a better position to how they where a year ago.
Could 2013 be the year when the boating industry settles back and starts growing up?
It is very difficult to say. There is still two problems which still challenge the market, the over abundance of offer and competition which is not a bad thing to customers, and too many used boats for sale in the used market.
The German Dusseldorf boat show is always a very interesting venue thanks to the connection it gives to the North South of Europe and the different boating cultures these represent.  In recent years we have also seen the resurgence of the Dutch, these offering some impressive medium large sizes models, most of which are build in steel and some in alloy offering a semi custom approach in around the fifteen meter size as standard.  At this moment in time these Dutch builder represent the most interesting part of the European boat building community, thanks to a touch of classic flare, nice looks, and a very high standard of fit and finish. It will be interesting to see how customers will  perceive these builders in future years.
