Super Sport Yacht Ends Aground in Port Ginesta Spain

A 24 meter super sport yacht tiled m/y Scandal with two crew onboard ended aground by the entrance of Molin Lars Marina in Port Ginesta, to the South of Barcelona, Spain on Sunday tenth March.  After the yacht ran aground the crew where airlifted to safety by a helicopter.  The yacht ended aground during maneuvering procedure to enter the marina because of strong winds and high seas, making the entry a tricky one, with an undisclosed testimony also stating that a bad trajectory also led to the yacht ending aground.  The yacht was reported leaking diesel fuel after the grounding, meaning it breached its hull and fuel tank, with a fuel protection boom not being possible to deploy because of the rough sea conditions.
M/y Scandal is a Tecnomar Velvet 83 as designed by Luca Dini and produced from 2005 to 06 in two units.  The Velvet 83 replaced the Velvet 24 model which debuted in 2001.  Velvet was Tecnomar fully enclosed hard-top sport yacht series from twenty up to 36 meters, produced from 1998 to 2011.

Classic Motor Yacht Sinks in Ostia Italy

A twenty meter motor yacht with one person onboard sank just about one nautical mile in front of the Plinius Beach Club on the Duillio water front, in Ostia the beach city of Rome Italy, on the morning of seventh March.  The motor yacht with its 65 year old captain had just left the Tiber river direction fifty nautical miles South to San Felice Circeo, when just at the start of its trip it started to take in water from a hull breach, reportedly into its engine room.  The captain called for help and was assisted, saved and taken to shore by CP381 of the Guardia Costiera of Rome, with the yacht later sinking in nine meters of water.  No pollution occurred from the sinking, with a salvage of the yacht being organized.
The motor yacht in this sinking is a Sanlorenzo 20 as produced from 1984 to 87.  Wooden build and designed by Della Rolle the Sanlorenzo 20 came out as a replacement to the 19 model and was replaced with the fiberglass build 70 in 1989.

Bertram Yacht Sinks in San Pedro California

A twenty meter Bertram yachts sank at the dock in San Pedro, California on fifth January.  The Bertram yacht was unattended during the sinking, and fuel loaded of eight thousand litres of diesel in its tanks plus extra tanks onboard, as it was reported to be planning a two thousand nautical miles plus of crossing to Hawaii next week.  Following the sinking the Bertram was protected by a pollution protecting boon.  Unconfirmed social media news said the yacht was taking on water for a day or two before it eventually sank.
The Bertram in this sinking is the 58 Motor Yacht, custom extended with an extra ten foot of hull and cockpit added aft.  Designed by Dave Napier the Bertram 58 Motor Yacht launched in 1976 and was produced for ten years till 86.  Bertram Motor Yacht range featured three models over the years debuting in 1971 with the 46, added with the 42 in 1973, and then the 58 in 76.  The Bertram Motor Yacht series was produced till 1987.

Ferretti Yacht Sinks in Baker Beach San Francisco

A fifteen meter Ferretti flybridge yacht with two persons onboard sank two hundred meters away from the shore of Bakers beach, to the North of San Francisco at around 12:00 hours of Thursday thirtieth November.  San Francisco fire department said they received the call of the yacht sinking just before noon, with the two boaters jumping in the water and then rescued by three rescue swimmers from Bakers beach who took them to a nearby San Francisco Police Department boat.  The two boaters where then taken to San Francisco Marina Yacht Harbor for a health evaluation.  The Ferretti Yacht cause of sinking was not reported, with the yacht sitting in about four meters of water and its flybridge still visible. 
The Ferretti Yacht in this sinking is a 510 model, designed by Zuccon and introduced in the fall of 2007.  Mimicking the features of the two years before presented 630 bigger sister in a smaller size, the 510 was a yacht ahead of its time for its full beam owners midships cabin, and astern galley layout.  The 510 came out as a replacement to the 500 and 530 models, and was renamed as 530 in 2010 and produced till 2014, then replaced by the Ferretti 550 model.

Hurricane Otis Goes Apocalyptic in Acapulco

Hurricane Otis made an apocalyptic arrival in Acapulco on Wednesday 25 October, devastating the waterfront of the Acapulco Yacht Club in the North-West of the bay.  Otis was a compact and so far the most powerful Tropical storm category five hurricane of the 2023 Pacific Season reaching speeds up to 143 knots on the morning of October 25. Forming on the 22nd November, and reaching its peak on the 04:00 hours of October 25, Otis hit and made landfall in Isla de la Roqueta, to the South of Acapulco, killing 49 people, with 57 still missing, and is estimated to have made seventeen billion US dollars in damages.

Here is the South side is a Ferretti 800, followed by a Sunseeker Predator 57, a mid nineties Horizon Elegance 82, and an Azimut 100 Jumbo.

Hurricane Norma 2023

Norma is the ninth hurricane of the Pacific 2023 season.  Forming from a low pressure appearing on the fifteen October to the Southern Coast of Mexico, which on the seventeen became a Tropical storm, and becoming a Hurricane the morning after of the eighteen. For the next 24 hours Norma will increase speeds from sixty to 112 knots becoming a category four Hurricane and causing chaos in the Southern Western Coast of Mexico.  Norma started to weaken on October 20, but made a second round of seventy knots winds on the 21st doing damage to the West-North-West of Cabo San Lucas, with a third round on the 23rd at Sinaloa near El Dorado.  After this Norma became a remnant low pressure.  
Hurricane Norma has caused major damage to La Paz and Marina Cortez to the East of Baja California Sur, with about fifty boats reported lost or damaged.  Above is a photo screen from a one of the videos circulating on social media showing the damage to La Paz marina.  This video showed a few catamarans and sail yachts sank, with the above motor yacht looking like a Hampton 490 Pilothouse semi-sank, and other motor yachts showing damage to the bathing platforms and hull sides.  
A video on YouTube by Your Saltwater Guide also showed a Cantieri di Pisa Akhir 30 S which was taken aground by the storms surge power.
While Alan Flores Ramos on Twitter showed the 2021 Ferretti Custom Line Navetta 33, hull #16 m/y Ricacha mostly sank vertically with its port side anchor out.  It is reported on some sources that Ricacha sought refuge in La Paz only for it to sustain damage in a collision and then sink.  The crew were rescued, with an operation to salvage Ricacha being underway.

Classic Motor Yacht Sinks in Terracina

An unattended twenty meter classic Cantieri di Pisa motor yacht partly sank at the exit of the Portatore river, outside of the Badino yacht harbour, in Terracina, Latina, Italy on the morning of Saturday 21 October.  The classic yacht was found partly sank with its stern resting on the river bed, and the bow and part of its super structure still floating. The Gaeta Guardia di Finanza along with the Maritime Office of Terracina where quickly on the case, contacting the ownership, so it removes the yacht and put it to safety, in order to avoid any damage to the environment and the river.  According to reports on the LatinaOggi news the ownership of the yacht accepted this call, and even with the bad weather of the day started the organization to remove the yacht and put it to safety.  An investigation is ongoing for why did the yacht sink.
This classic motor yacht is a Cantieri di Pisa Akhir 20 a design of Pierluigi Spadolini produced from 1979 till 1984.  Build in wood planking the Pisa Akhir 20 offered an interior of three double guest cabins plus a crew cabin for two, and is powered by twin 750hp GM for top speeds up to 27 knots.  A replacement to the 19, the Akhir 20 was replaced by more modern and bigger 22 in 1985.

Super Yacht Burns at Fort Lauderdale Yacht Haven Marina

A 28 meter super yacht titled m/y Self Made burned in flames while berthed in Yacht Haven Marina, near West State Road 84, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida on about 22:30 hours of Thursday twelfth October.  Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue and Fire Fighters responded to the blaze which engulfed Self Made, with the flames controlled in about two hours.  After the fire the 28 meter yacht had over half of its main deck and flybridge badly burned down by the fire.  The yacht was reported unattended at the time of the fire, with no injuries and damage to other vessels being reported.  
Motor Yacht Self Made previously named Janet is a Cheoy Lee 92 model delivered in 1999, and last refitted in 2015.  Designed by Tom Fexas the Cheoy Lee 92 debuted in 1988 as an evolution of the 90, and in 1999 received a new super structure design and was produced till 2004 in a total of ten units.  The 92 was replaced by the Burvenich design Cheoy Lee 95 in 2005.

Two Yachts Burn Down in Pasadena Marina Florida

A fire in Pasadena Yacht and Country Club located in Boca Ciega Bay, southwest of Gulfport Boulevard, Florida which started after about 16:00 hours of Wednesday fourth October totalled and sank two boats and damaged two more.  The fire started on a thirteen meter flybridge cruiser, which then jumped to the starboard side on a sixteen meters sportfish yacht.  The flybridge cruiser which ignited the fire was totally burned down to the waterline and sank with the fire, while the sportfish yacht to starboard also received extensive damage and partly sank later on.  Another seventeen meter sportfish yacht to port side of the fire starting flybridge cruiser also had fire burning damage, with some minor damage also hitting a same sized sportfish yacht located to starboard a slip away from the fire starting boat.  Gulfport Police Department dispatched officers, emergency crews, and fire fighters to the scene around 17:00 hours.  The cause of the fire is reported as starting from the battery compartment of the thirteen meter flybridge cruiser.  No one was injured in the fire although damages are reported to be about 1.3 million US dollars.
Pasadena Yacht and Country Club was also involved in a fire on 03:00 hours of eighteen December 2020.  We did not report that fire back then as I found nearly zero information apart a photo of three empty slips damaged by fire.
The boat which started the fire is a Meridian 441 Sedan produced from 2003 to 2008, a model sold over three hundred hulls and was one of the biggest successes of the Brunswick incorporated and owned 2003 to 2016 brand.  The other sportfish yacht which burned down and sank is a Viking 52 Convertible, a model produced from 2002 to 09, with the boat to port side of the starting boat, also being a Viking, but the 55 Convertible from 1998 to 2003.  The further boat to starboard is another Viking but a 56 Convertible which was produced from 2004 to 2010.

Hatteras Sportfish Ends Aground Then Sinks

A sixteen meter Hatteras sportfish yacht titled Rae Mar ended aground and then sank near Boston, in Massachusetts, on the morning of Saturday 23 September.  The cause of the collision and grounding are not reported, with the situation getting worse as the sportfish later sank, probably due to high tide coming in.  Some unconfirmed reports are saying the sportfish yacht was on a sea trial at the time of the accident.  It is a strange turn of events to what looks a visible islet.  This Hatteras sportfish yacht was advertised for sale at the time of the collision.
Rae Mar is a 1989 Hatteras 52 Convertible powered by twin 735hp Detroit engines.  As all Hatteras up till the nineties the 52 Convertible is a design of Jack Hargrave, who presented a two or three cabin layout choice, and a modified Vee hull closing rather flat to aft.  Launching in 1982 the Hatteras 52 Convertible received a look upgrade in side windows and flybridge in 1986.  Produced till 1990 the 52 Convertible was a replacement to the 53 Convertible and was replaced by the 54 Convertible series I.

Motor Yacht Sinking in Belleair

A 23 meter motor yacht titled Christmas Spirit, partly sank near Belleair boat ramp, in Tampa on the afternoon of third September.  United States Coast Guard and Police Community Support Officer went to the scene to assist the boater and evaluate the scene.  The boater sustained no injuries and during inspection it was seen that the yacht was leaking fuel in the sea, and was later surrounded and protected with a hard boon and absorbent pads.  The motor yacht had to be left boomed till Tuesday fifth September when a cleaning up process had to be made.  
M/y Christmas Spirit is a 1992 Lazzara 76.  Produced from 1992 to 2002, Lazzara build 48 units of the 76, which offered a five stateroom layout and two important options; wide-body deck house and enclosed skylounge flybridge.  Lazzara made thirty in each of these versions.  The Lazzara 76 was powered by twin MTU 1150hp for speeds in the mid twenties. The Lazzara 76 was replaced by the 80 in 2003. 
Unfortunately the last twelve months have been tough on m/y Christmas Spirit, which was sold as salvage from the aftermath of Hurricane Ian from end September 2022, the worst hurricane to hit Florida since the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935.

Classic Yacht Sinks Then Recovered Near Caprera Island

A classic seventeen meter motor yacht titled m/y Vintage was recovered in Maddalena Island, near Caprera to the East of Sardinia on the morning of Saturday second September.  According to news Vintage had a structural plank collapse in rough seas, opening a hull breach at about 06:50 hours of Monday 21 August and then sinking in about forty meters of deep sea.  On the morning of second September a detailed operation in recovering the classic yacht, with a team by Marina di Porto Massimo, and Costruzioni Marittime e Edile from Olbia and assistance and monitoring by the Guardia Costiera and Harbour Masters of Olbia was organized.  This was a difficult job, with two tug boats and three water craft, towing the yacht to a boat yard in Palau in Sardinia some five nautical miles from the point of sinking.
M/y Vintage is a Cantiere Navale di Chiavari Paraggina 1000 build in 1968 and delivered in 1970.  17.20 meters in length and built in triple planking the Paraggina 1000 was designed by Gino Solari, with an aft cabin layout of two double guest suites, and a two berth crew cabin forward.  The Paraggina 1000 was powered by twin GM 480hp for top speeds up to 22 knots.  Gino Solari will evolve the Paragina 1000 looks into the larger Portofino twenty meter.  Cantieri Navale di Chiavari was founded in the eighteen century, building about seventeen boats a year in the sixties Italian pleasure boating renaissance and closing its doors in 1975. 
According to reports m/y Vintage is the last Cantieri Navali di Chiavari Paraggina 1000, receiving an important refit in 2023.  For details of this refit I am leaving a link in the comments section.

Maiora Yacht Ends Aground in Saint-Florent

A twenty meter Maiora motor yacht ended aground in Saint-Florent, to the North of Corsica on the morning of tenth August.  The causes of the accident are not reported but some reports are saying the yacht ending on the reef at about ten knots.  The yacht was later in the day protected with an oil boon for pollution control as it tipped more to its starboard side, and then taken to a nearby yard for repairs.  
The yacht in this grounding is the popular Maiora 20 produced from 1992 till about 2012, to a design of Roberto del Re.  The 20 was Maiora's best success for the Viareggio based builder founded in 1971.  A custom made to order flybridge motor yacht the Maiora 20 dominated the twenty meter size for its modern yet clean looks, selling over eighty units in two decades of production, and including the 20S longer stern version released in 2000.

Viking Hits Townsend Inlet and Sinks

A sixteen meter Viking sportfish yacht with seven people onboard struck the Townsends Inlet Bridge, and later partially sank on its starboard side at the Avalon Yacht club, in New Jersey USA.  The collision with the Townsends Inlet Bridge happened on 2300 hours of Monday fifth June, and some fifteen minutes later the Viking yacht partially sank.  The causes of the collision are not reported, with the seven people saved from the yacht by the area Coast Guard, and Sea Tow and Northstar Marine assisting keeping the vessel afloat and then on recovering it, which they completed on Wednesday seventh June.  Due to the collision the bridge waterway was temporary closed on Tuesday morning with commercial divers and engineers inspecting and repairing the damage sustained by the impact.  
This is the second time the bridge was struck by boat traffic in less to a year, with another collision occurring in July 2022, when a steel built motor vessel under charter with 22 passengers collided with the 1939 made Townsends Inlet.  The Townsends Inlet Bridge is located in New Jersey on the Atlantic ocean, linking Sea Isle City with Avalon Bay.
The Viking in this bridge collision is a first generation 52 Convertible produced from 2002 to 08, with a three cabin layout, and standard powered by twin Man 1050hp or optional 1300hp engines, these last reaching speeds in the mid thirties.  The 52 Convertible came about as a replacement to the first generation 50 Convertible and was replaced by the second generation 54C released in 2008.

Motor Yacht Beached in Birdie Beach

A seventeen meter Trader motor yacht finished beached on Birdie beach, to the North West of Sydney in Australia in between the night and early morning of Saturday 27 May.  Before the beaching the yacht was being towed after it developed problems to its engines to the South East of Birdie Island.  Ultimately because of the damage sustained, and problems in salvaging the yacht from its current location, reports are coming that she will be chopped and wrecked.
The yacht in this beaching is a Tarquin Trader 575 Sunliner, an evolution extended in length of the 535 presented in 1997.  The Tarquin Trader 575 Sunliner was produced from 2000 to 2008 and offered an interior with three double cabins, and was powered by twin Cats 450hp which give 22 knots top speeds.  The 575 was replaced by the slightly longer 585 Sunliner in 2008.  Tarquin Trader was a British company with boats produced in Taiwan.

Viking Yacht Catches Fire at Dry Dock in Fort Lauderdale

A 23 meter Viking sportfish yacht titled m/y Banjo went ablaze while dry docked in a yard to the North Southwest 20 Street and 18 Avenue, off the South Fork New River area in Fort Lauderdale on 0700 hours on the morning of Friday fourteen April.  Fort Lauderdale Fire-Rescue Department responded to the fire with five vehicles and multiple crews.  It was not reported if the yacht had any people or workers onboard when the fire started with this taking about two hours to control and extinguish, and no one accounted as injured in the fire.  Investigations are ongoing as why the fire started.
M/y Banjo is a 2012 Viking 76 Convertible.  Produced from 2009 to 19, the Viking 76 Convertible offers a five double stateroom four heads layout and is powered by twin 1825hp up to 2600hp engines for speeds of over forty knots. The 76 came out as a replacement to the 74 Convertible, and was replaced by the 80 Convertible in the fall of 2016.

Baia Yacht on Fire in Channel Islands California

A 24 meter Baia super sport yacht titled Our Nauti Dream went on fire and was severely damaged while berthed in Port Hueneme in Channel Islands, Los Angeles USA on the morning of Friday 24 March.  A team of six fire fighters went onto the marina pontoon to control the fire with no success as the yacht is now mostly in a salvage state, as the picture above shows.  The Baia yacht was unattended at the time of the fire with no injuries to persons being reported.  Unconfirmed reports are stating the Baia yacht burned from a short circuit battery related causing the fire.
Our Nauti Dream is a Baia B80 from 1993 powered by twin GM 1450hp and Arneson surface drive propulsion giving speeds up to forty knots.  The B80 was launched in 1992 to a design of Carlo Galeazzi and was the Italian builder flagship at launch, surpassed by the one off B105 flybridge in 1994, which is at today still the largest Baia ever build.  Produced till 2004 Baia sold ten B80 and 80 Panther as the model evolved in 1999, redesigned upper structure with forward facing radar arch and hard top.  The Baia 80 was replaced by the 78/80 Atlantica in 2003.  Baia was founded in  1961 and closed in 2016, although since then every fall we do have news of the company coming back, which so far never materialized.

Princess Yacht Fire in Fort Lauderdale

A 26 meter Princess yacht titled m/y Hot Pursuit went in flames while berthed in her berth at Las Olas Isles, in Fort Lauderdale on 10:30 morning time of Wednesday March eight.  No one was aboard the yacht when Hot Pursuit's flybridge started to burn, with Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue responding to the fire and managing to control the flames, limiting the damage to the flybridge.  The causes of the fire are unknown with the first indications showing that it was an electrical fault which started the flames.
M/y Hot Pursuit is a Princess 88 MY from 2018.  Designed by Bernard Olesinski the Princess 88 MY was launched in 2013 and produced till 2019 in 27 units.  The 88 MY offered an interior with four double guest cabins, and two crew rooms and was powered by twin Cat 1825 or 1925hp engines.  A replacement to the Princess 85, the 88 MY was replaced by the half a meter smaller Y85 in 2019.

Prestige Yacht Catches Fire at Ruskin Tampa

An unattended sixteen meter Prestige flybridge motor yacht titled m/y Flood Cuts under Warwick registry went ablaze while berthed in Little Harbor Marina, Ruskin, Tampa on 09:12 hours morning of Thursday 26 January 2023.  Hillsborough Fire County responded to the fire from land first with Engine Seventeen, and later on from the sea with Fire Boat 29, to de-water the vessel in order to avoid her from sinking. No one was injured in the fire, with the damages being limited to the yacht.  The cause of the fire is under investigation.
M/y Flood Cuts is a Prestige 550 Flybridge as designed by Garroni, and produced from 2012 to 15.  The 550 Flybridge and S is one of Prestige most successful models above fifty feet, with the model selling 170 units in a production run of just three years, and then evolving into the 560 in 2016.

Vanquish Sinks in Miami River

A sixteen meter Vanquish sport yacht titled m/y Falcon with a captain and crew onboard sank in the Miami river just before 1400 hours of 25 November.  The causes of the incident are not reported.  Being on the Miami river which is one the most Vlogged areas in the World for boating we have Boat Zone giving a bit of previous history before the sinking, as Falcon is seen dropping six passengers near a construction locality in the area.  At this stage it is not understood if Falcon's captain is aware of some problems as this is just twenty minutes before the yacht sinks.  The incident is later reported and assisted by Miami Police Department and Miami Fire Rescue, possibly also because in the filmed videos the Vanquish yacht is still a semi-floating-sank wreck hazard moving around with the current in the Miami River.
The Vanquish in this accident is a VQ54.  Debuting in 2017 the Vanquish VQ54 is build in aluminium and comes from a Guido de Groot design, offered in one, two, or three cabin interiors, powered with Volvo 610 or 725hp with IPS pod drives, and or Man 800hp with surface drives.  The Vanquish VQ54 was replaced by the VQ58 in 2021.
