Baglietto and Francesco Paszkowski
Baglietto’s new styling which will be presented at the 2012 Montecarlo Boat Show will develop under the sign of continuity: the designer Francesco Paszkowski has indeed signed an agreement for the design of the interiors and exteriors of Baglietto’s planing and displacement yachts. The agreement envisages a close cooperation between the La Spezia shipyard and the designer, not only for the completion of the 3 crafts that Baglietto has taken over from the previous ownership (a 44m planing yacht, a 46m and a 53m displacement yacht whose exteriors were designed by Mr Paszkowski), but also for the design of three new projects: a line of 58m steel and aluminium vessels, a line of 37m aluminium planing yachts, and one of 46m aluminium planing crafts, whose design style will set the 'family feeling' of Baglietto yachts over the next few years. These three new projects will by no means break with tradition, but will, rather, epitomise its natural evolution. Besides completing currently ongoing projects, we will offer the new Management our twenty-year experience with the shipyard and our firm's innovative approach, so as to define new projects and make sure Baglietto will maintain its key role in the mega-yacht sector.

Among other Ferretti Yachts models there was the Ferretti 620, which strikes the right balance with its “compact” and sportive external profile and the high standard of its internal spaces; Ferretti 570, which distinguishes itself for its innovative layout and strong attention to detail given its contemporary design; Ferretti 530, with its slim and aggressive external profile, combining prestige and quality; and, finally, Ferretti 500, the re-examination of the Ferretti 470, with greater liveability, offering a renewed feeling of contemporary classicism, in line with the entire range. Heesen Yachts, world leader in the design, engineering and construction of luxury superyachts, is thrilled to announce that team Synergy/Heesen won first place in the match race (to stay on top of the season's rankings in that format) and sixth place in fleet racing at the RC44 – Austria Cup, which was held in Gmunden, Lake Traunsee from 30th May to 3rd June. The RC44 Austria Cup is the only leg of this circuit held on a Lake: the high mountains that soar around the racing course create unpredictable wind shifts that make this race extremely challenging and exciting. Team Synergy Heesen hasn't lost a single match race in RC44 for an impressive run of 16 weeks, one of the longest winning streaks in this class’ history. Unfortunately, because of bad weather conditions, only eight races out of twelve could be run. Team Synergy/Heesen led by tactician Ed Baird, with Valentin Zavadnikov and Leonid Lebedev at the helm, chose conservative tactics in the fleet race and achieved sixth position overall. The next legs, which will complete this year’s RC44 circuit are: 18th - 22nd July Marstrand Sweden, 3rd -7th October World Championship Rovinj Croatia.

Jarrett Bay at Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament
With challenging wind & sea conditions for much of the 2012 Big Rock tournament, several Jarrett Bay-built boats scratched and clawed their way to the forefront. The Flybuoy’s winning 499 lb. fish was caught on the first day of the tournament, and with building seas throughout the rest of the week, the 120 boat fleet largely struggled to outdo them. On Day 2 however, Jarrett Bay hull 22, Inspiration, captained and owned by Big Rock director Casey Wagner, boated a 437 lb blue which turned out good for 2nd place and more than 212,000 dollars. The Inspiration also released an additional blue marlin, 1 sail and 1 white marlin during the first 3 days of fishing. The 64′ Bench Mark, JB hull 55, started the week with an extremely hot hand. On Saturday’s Keli Wagner Lady Angler’s Tournament, the crew released two blue marlin for third place in this one day event. The ladies on hull 21, Chainlink outdid the Bench Mark for second place in the KWLA by releasing two blue marlin and 1 white. Islander took first with four releases. Jarrett Bay hull 11, Bill Collector also released two billfish. Bench Mark built on their strong showing at the KWLA by scoring a billfish grand slam on Day 1 of the Big Rock – releasing a white marlin, blue marlin and then a sailfish over the course of about 4 hours on Monday. On the final day of Big Rock fishing, hull 8, Fishing Partner was one of two boats to deck a blue marlin early in the morning. Captain Daryl Brower and team continued fishing and released 2 white marlin before heading to the scales. Both blues brought to the scales on Saturday however were under the tournament minimum. Also on the final day of fishing, Jarrett Bay Yacht Sales’ salesman Peter Dubose captained the Accordingly III to the top of the gamefish “Winner Take All” category, with a 32 lb dolphin which earned them over $77,000!

Projects: Moonen 24 metres Nick Mezas Design, Moonen 100 RPH

Moonen has released details of two new designs created for owners looking for a contemporary approach within the template of this Dutch builder. Rene van der Velden has drawn the modern lines of the 100 RPH, while Nick Mezas is responsible for a new fast displacement concept that is being offered in three lengths between 18 and 24 metres, so far shown in only in the larger size version. The 24 metres Nick Mezas Design above sees Moonen looking at smaller dimensions, and also sporting a more modern new generation trendy look outside.  The boats will also feature important differences even in the larger 24 metres model of this line of having only one anchor, to be built to CE regulation instead of class rules, and for being propelled with IPS pod drives.  Moonen does not give much details on this very interesting 24 meters Nick Mezas, but other important news are a round bilged hulls and 22 knots max which marks them in the fast displacement line from this builder.
The Moonen 100 RPH is designed by Rene van der Velden who presented modern lines with an owners stateroom on the main deck which features extra space in the beam thanks to the narrow walkways forward. These walkaways are intended for use by crew members only. Elsewhere the yacht has the most economic layout possible for a boat of the size. Moonen and architect der Velden have placed great emphasis in giving max space to the flybridge and to do this they have allowed for tenders placed in a garage located to aft.

Project: Hatteras 100 Raised Pilothouse

Hatteras updates the project for its new flagship now becoming the 100 Raised Pilothouse from 95.  Designed by Italian Angelo Gobbi and his T4 Design team, this extension came after the first full scale mock up was made of the 95, and with the input coming from the Hatteras dealers and selected clients a five foot extension at stern now giving a larger aft deck, and more spacious crew quarters was made.  As was the case for 95, the 100 keeps its strong points from a choice of owners room on the main or lower deck to midships, this giving five or four double guest cabins layouts.  The 100 Raised Pilothouse is also offered in three different flybridge choices; with one of the options offering a tender stowage up top, with the other being fully dedicated to entertainment areas.  Engine choices are unchanged for the new Hatteras 100 Raised Pilothouse flagship with standard twin 1900hp Cats giving 25 knots, and optional 2600hp MTU adding four digits to wide open throttle speeds.

New Model: Princess V57

A further evolution to the V53 later becoming the V56, now only remaining in the hull lines and Princess's new V57 is totally a novelty above the waterline.  Patio door main deck, full beam owners cabin, and a larger tender garage are the main novelty features, always in demand in small sizes, but also necessitate by the V52 introduced in 2010. Interesting is the lower accommodation deck layout which apart the much wanted full beam owners stateroom with large view windows to midships, is that the standard layout offers three en suite heads, with the choice of replacing the third head with an L-shaped dinette. A well sized L-shaped galley is also located below decks in the middle of the cabin area.  A single berth crew cabin is located to aft.  The main deck offers a sun pad to aft of which underneath it is a 3.20 meters tender garage, and a C-shaped settee outside. Going inside another C-shaped dinette serves guests, to starboard is a unit behind the two seat helm station.  Extra tender space is also to be found on the up and down bathing platform.  Power is from twin Volvo 800 or optional 900hp with line shafts which give max speeds up to 36 knots.

Project: Galeon 430 Skydeck

Galeon show another project involving the 420, 430 series this time with the Skydeck version.  A flybridge motor cruiser in all senses, accept for the fact that its aft deck and flybridge of the new 430 Skydeck all have a young generation call to them.  First of all the aft deck features the modular modifiable layout as the 430 HTC, while the flybridge will feature three forward facing seats one central for the helm, and two sun pads.  Inside the layout of the 430 Skydeck features the clever three cabins  two heads lower deck, and a living main with a galley to port side opposite the helm.  Interesting and also very clever how Galeon and designer Tony Castro made all the three models; 420 Fly, 430 HTC, and this latest 430 Slydeck with distinctive window patterns, that is all being different.

Project: Bavaria 420 Virtess

PowerYacht was among the first to show this new Bavaria project back in the late fall of 2011, at the time announced as 40 Flybridge.  Now Bavaria submits more solid information for its first flybridge motor cruiser, the much awaited three cabin 420 Virtess.  Designed by Marco Casali from Too Design in Rome, who I remind has done a super job with all the Itama by Ferretti Group line, the 420 Virtess presents a modern line with a sleek flybridge design.  The Rome designers not only Casali has always been practical people, and this is confirmed by the clever single level interior main deck which incorporates an L-shaped galley in the forward area, and an entertainment unit opposite the C-shaped settee.  The 420 Virtess will also have important distinctive options with a grey or white color hull choice, and all around Iroko deck.  Weighing at eleven and half tons the first official Bavaria flybridge now known as 420 Virtess will be powered by Volvo 370, up to 435hp engines choices in stern drive or IPS pod propulsion choice.

New Model: Rivera 4400 Sport Yacht Series II

Since the introduction of the Sport Yacht series by Rivera in 2005, I have always considered this line a close to perfect boat, in terms of layout, looks, and practicality.  The key in the Riviera Sport Yacht line, is that it never over does in all departments.  The looks are conservative with a homage to sportfish, accommodation is superb but most of all practical and very socializing, and performance together with consumptions are always in line.  The 4400 Sport Yacht Series II improves on the original version introduced in 2007 since then delivered in seventy plus units, most notably are modern enhancement with influences coming from the line flagship the 5800, see coach roof design,  new large lean lower deck window from fore to midships servicing all cabins and heads.  The interior is little changed in the new Series II with a lower deck having two cabins served by two heads with a midships room now increased in headroom sleeping three.  The main deck is all about living with the open all pivoting door and window join the interior C-shaped saloon and L-shaped galley with the aft cockpit.  The aft deck has also a choice to have a mezzanine settee to port side. Another choice available for the Series II is also the option of having a settee on the bathing platform to aft.  Power for the 4400 Sport Yacht Series II is the same as the original version with twin Volvo 370 or 435hp with hull specifically designed for the IPS pod units.  Speed with the large engine option is a 32 knots max speed, three knots less to what the first generation of this model actually did of which I can fully confirm having actually tested one in the Med with quite high sea and land temperatures, which is always means a decrease for top speed numbers.
Technical Data:
LOA - 15.12 m (49.7ft)
Hull Length - 13.91 m
Beam - 4.58 m
Draft - 1.2 m
Displacement - 12,500 kg dry

Project: Delta 80 IPS

Again coming from Lars Modin's drawing board is Delta's largest project to date, the 80 IPS. The hull of the new boat measures 86 feet over all length, making it the largest boat ever to come into production from a Swedish manufacturer. Although the boat is almost ten meters longer than the next sibling the 54 IPS, she will be easily recognized as a natural sister of the Delta family. But there is some firsts for Delta; see axed bow, and a flybridge. A traditional four cabins lower deck, with full beam owners stateroom, VIP to fore, and two guest cabins in between is the standard layout of the accommodation plan.  A crew area with two rooms, a lobby, and small galley is located also below between the engine room and owners stateroom.  On the plans the saloon will be a single level deck of a very open layout with two L-shaped settee welcoming you aft,, galley, and a dining table for eight to port side. Two steps divide the interior helm station.  Suggested power is from triple Volvo 900hp with IPS1200 pod drives which give a forecast top speed of 38 knots and a cruise of 30. Twin engines of the same power and drives are available. Interesting is also the project weight of the Delta 80 IPS which is only forty tons, definitely among the lighter vessels in this size.  Launch is scheduled for spring 2013, so we will see if the Delta 80 IPS manage to make this low weight break through, and confirm its speed numbers.

Project: Breedendam MTB Three Zero

Just following the announcement of a new flagship and a classic torpedo boat inspired line with the MTB Four Zero, the Dutch Breedendam follows this with its smaller Three Zero.  Designed as the larger sister by Guido de Groot and Flame Yacht, the 32 feet plus Three Zero, is solely designed as a day cruiser, but overnight staying is available in forward cabin having a Vee shaped berth, and a separate shower.  The exterior offers two L-shaped loungers, and classic style helm to port side.  Power for the MTB Three Zero is twin Volvo or Steyr 260hp engine which should give a max speed of 35 knots.  Standard CE certification is so far C, but the 600 liters fuel capacity and dual engines do suggest that a higher rating might be possible for the more sea user customer.

New Model: Calafuria 30 Fly

I have always been a fan of Calafuria, which is a company without me knowing at the time in the eighties introduced me to the Italian traditional Gozzo fishing boat.  How is it, that canoe cabin fish boat can plane and go fast?  A lot of reasons, but mostly is because Mr.Catarsi was among the first to experiment with hulls before the world hybrid even existed in this element of semi displacement nature, having planning characteristics. Calafuria's new model, is the 30 Fly presented in project on PowerYacht on October 2010.   The new 30 Fly as all Calafuria is a traditional looking from a certain view point motor cruiser, with versatility being key to many elements.  We can start from the fact that as any Calafuria it will have fishing boat features, but this does not disclose it from a comfortable interior which is also available in three different choices. From an open single master cabin with huge spaces, to a Vee shade double, and two guest bunk berths to port or starboard side as you may prefer. The galley on the 30 Fly is located on the main deck to port or starboard side, also as one desires, and same goes for the L-shaped settee.  Power is form twin 270 or optional 320hp diesel engines which give max speeds up to 26 knots.
Technical Data:
LOA - 10.2 m (3ft)
Hull Length - 9.0 m
Beam - 3.5 m

Fuel Capacity - 800 l
Water Capacity - 250 l

Project: Absolute 40 STL

After making all its line into hard top and flybridge boats, Absolute returns to an open sports cruiser with the very futuristic looking 40 STL.  The new 40 STL which stands for Sports Line marks the Italian builder return to open boats, just as it started in 2003 with the 25.  Huge exterior living areas are the trademark of the 40 STL, but also innovative features as a bimini which retracts behind the lounger or the option for a hard top which covers over half of the cockpit deck. Another particular unique feeling of the 40 STL is the feeling of a mix between that of an open cruiser, to that of a center console thanks to centrally located two person helm station. Inside the 40 STL will offer a very open living area with an innovative layout having a second galley, a U-shaped dinette which converts to a double berth to fore, separate shower head, and an owners full beam room to midships. Absolute does not give much details on the power and propulsion of the 40 STL, but I do imagine similar power as for the 40 STY of Volvo 260 with IPS pod drive or 300 and 330hp choices, in stern drive propulsion format.

New Model: Cayman 57 HT

Cayman Yachts presents its new 57 HT model, a sport yacht which follows the footsteps of the current flagship of this builder the 75 HT, and the 2011 launched 62.   As said in previous articles the new Cayman yachts of the HT line do appear more aggressive and sport, but still offer the practicality associated with the smaller models.  See walk around side deck, front looking settee to fore which is among the smallest offered in size at this moment, and a fully enclosed hard top.  Designed by Hot Lab, to gather with the Cayman engineering department the 57 HT offers a three double cabins interior layout with a full beam midships located owners cabin.  The third cabin is a hybrid layout which can be left fully open and be used as a dinette or relaxing settee, or closed thanks to a sliding door and used as a double berth.  Power is from not so large Cummins 715hp engines with max speeds being declared at 33 knots.

Project: Aqualum 33

Aqualum with its designer Fabian Conte shows the project for a new entry level model, the 33.  The Aqualum is a hard top sports cruisers which will see the extension of this Argentinan boat builder, into smaller models.  At the moment the smallest Aqualum is the 35, which has had a good run of success in Southern European sales.  A spacious single level aft deck will welcome people onboard the 33, this featuring a C-shaped settee, small sun pad, relaxing chair, and helm station.  Below is an area which sleeps a total of six, in a different to the standard of the size planned area.  The first surprise is that the Aqualum 33 will a full beam midships cabin separated by door, and the second is the open area to fore with galley, L-shaped settee, and a double bed to fore.  Power is from twin Volvo 260hp diesel engines which with Aqualum giving estimated max speed of 35 knots.

New Model: Ferretti 870

The Marina di Cattolica served as the charming background for a new launch for Ferretti on Tuesday 5 June, that of the 870, the latest born in this renowned motor and super yacht fleet. This important, enthralling event was the climax hard working months: from engineering to design, to the manufacturing stage, and the greatest care devoted to the tiniest finishing details. Over the next few weeks and until the end of June, the new model will undergo all necessary technical checks; RINA tests, prototype sea trials, the verification of systems and appliances and on board furnishings will be completed. The 870 hull one will then be officially delivered to its European owner.  Like all other yachts in the range, the Ferretti 870 will be presented as a world premiere at Cannes Boat Show from 11 to 16 September 2012.  This new model continues the two decades close cooperation between Studio Zuccon, Ferretti's AYT, and the Centro Stile of the group. This craft has been entirely built in the Group’s Cattolica production unit. With its considerable size; an overall length of 26.5 metres, a 6 metre-beam, and a full load displacement of 80 tons, the Ferretti 870 model further extends and renovates Ferretti Yachts super yachts fleet which features five models, if one excludes the Custom Line range.  While preserving some features of its predecessor the 830, the new Ferretti 870 is characterised by a series of innovative solutions already widely appreciated on the brands most recent models: the bronze dome over the navigation bridge, also found on the 800, further highlights the crafts sporty look, while the large glazing on the main deck results in very slender lines and extremely bright interiors. In the hull, the two large open-view windows at the height of the master stateroom have now been joined by the opening portholes of the guest cabins and by the double window of the forward VIP cabin. Extensive, spacious areas go hand in hand with great performances on this yacht: during the first medium load trial carried out by the prototype testing team, the Ferretti 870 reached a maximum speed of 32 knots, driven by the two MTU 1948hp engines; such an impressive propulsion, though, perfectly blends with the utmost comfort ensured by the Mitsubishi Anti Rolling Gyro system, which reduces rolling by more than 50%.

Project: Estensi 360 Goldstar Sport Open

Estensi shipyard from Tuscany in Italy launching the 360 Goldstar Sport just a couple months ago, already presents an alternative version of this model, the Open.  Based on all details on the 360 Goldstar Sport, with the big advantage of being able to be registered in Italy in the small craft section of its registry under ten meters, the new project from Zuccheri distinct itself for its open aft deck.  That is not divided with patio door and being fully open to aft.  For example instead of the patio door to starboard is a nice aft looking mezzanine settee, seating three to four persons.  Down below the layout offers the same two cabins, with a single head to port, and an owners room to fore.  Again other technical features which strike in the press release are to be found in the Estensi 360 Goldstar Sport Open as two FPT enigne choices; standard twin 280 or optional 370hp this last giving 33 knots max speed, a low 10 knots planning speed, and 70dba of noise at 2000 rpm cruise.

New Model: Galeon 385 Htl

Finding growth in current European times is very difficult  if not close to impossible, but those companies who listen to customers may surely find themselves in better position once the economies turn back around.  Galeon from Poland is such a company and even when buying one of the smaller models in its range as the 325, one is offered with choices that are close to impossible to find even in the fifty plus size feet. This new Galeon 385 Htl, with the abbreviations meaning hard top long is again carefull attention to customers demands which the Strazyn Polish builder provides.  Based in fact on the 385 Hts the, the L version main difference is that of a longer more extended hard top which covers all the cockpit.  For the rest the Galeon 385 Htl builds on the well laid both up and below decks, with very up to date features in this size, such as twin heads below, and a single floor cockpit.

Glass Yachts

I remember reading an article in Nautica magazine from the early nineties where a known in the field naval architect said an over whelming at the time to me declaration; that future boats will be made to a wide part of windows, glassed surfaces.  This in his opinion to have more contact with the water, and to give unobstructed views to the owner.
Fast forward to post new millennium and how true do those declarations sound. Window surfaces today are being more widely used with Azimut and Sunseeker actually being in logger heads to who makes the most window view areas on there yachts.  Although the latest Sunseeker 28 Metre launched earlier this year, has to have among the higher percentage of windows used on surface to length.  The Italians on the other hand should feel proud to have started an evolution of the wider use of glass surfaces since the nineties, and launching not only a trend but a must to modern looking European yachts.  Do you remember the Azimut 65 Pininfarina, designed by the famous automotive design house. I consider it among the first of this glass windows evolution, which was followed by the 78 Ultra, AZ 54 Cinquanta Quattro, and a couple years later in 1999 by the 68 Plus among the first to have large view windows in the midships owners cabin, and the 68S for introducing these but frame less in 2003.
What will the future bring?  As I see it more glass surfaces, and open able areas which also give more real contact with the sea.  Nothing wrong with these new solutions if done in safety, with regulation classes giving a high testing to the glassed areas, before certifying these to be used by yachts.  More so in the important eighty feet plus size, but also in smaller dimensions.
As the saying says the sea has a soft belly, but also a hard head when he is in a bad mood.  So I hope these architects, and designers do a lot of research into the modern evolution with a high safety protocol in mind.
