A summer storm of strong short intensity hit the Tuscany Coast with the worst of the damage coming in the Gulf of Baratti, Piombino, Italy on the early afternoon of the festive Ferragosto day, of Thursday fifteen August. With this sudden storm some half a dozen boats anchored or swing moored in the Gulf of Baratti ended beached, creating a bit havoc to the beach and to the surrounding areas. This Summer storm which hit all the Tuscany coast from Pisa down to Piombino lasted for about an hour, with with speeds at thirty knots, and gusting up to forty knots. Some other sail boats are also reported beached and partly sank in the area, while a nine meter classic Azimut sport cruiser with five persons onboard had to be rescued after it lost power near Cecina, with the Guardia Costiera rescuing three of the five persons and then helping in the towing to a safe harbor.
In Baratti the grounded motor boats are a mid to end nineties produced Gobbi 23 Sport as pictured above, and a classic Cantieri di Pisa Polaris of 13,20 meters as produced from 1961 to 1963 and pictured below.Below is a classic eighties Azimut 28 which is assisted by the Guardia Costiera after it lost power near Cecina to the South of Livorno.
