New Model: Princess V85-S

The new Princess V85-S is a further development of the V85 model launched in 2008. This model back then was also Princess first Sport Yacht featuring the demanded sporty second helm up top. Flagship of the successful V-class sport cruiser and yacht series from Princess this new update on the V85-S features a lower profile, redesigned main deck layout, and the option of having more powerful 2600hp MTU engines. Other noticeable different features of the V85-S are a more curved shear line aft, and larger lower window on the main deck versus the old version. Power with the MTU 2600hp option reached a 40 knots top speed. The new V85-S was presented in the early part of 2010 in the Dusseldorf show.

Project: Azimut 50 Magellano

Azimut was already challenging the market back last year when it launched the first 74 Magellano, announcing that a smaller 48 model is already in the works. A year has passed since the unveiling of this important chapter for Azimut and the Italian builder keeps its promise presenting the two feet extended project of the 50 Magellano set to be unveiled in the coming Genoa boat show. In this new project Azimut embraces green technology not only to the hybrid power which gives a speed of 8 knots, but also in the building of the yacht in infusion resin method, a technology that the Italian builder has been among the first to embrace from the big European builders, the Forest Stewardship Council for the woods used on board, and also for being the smallest boat to get the RINA Green Plus. Interior wise the 50 Magellano is also full of choices, having a four option plan for its lower deck which involves a two or three cabin plan, a studio, sofa area, or laundry room choices. The main deck follows recent demand of an astern galley, and a convivial area by the lower helm. For the tender stowage Azimut takes lessons from its faster boats, making the 50 Magellano the first Explorer yacht to incorporate a tender garage, but further space will be available I think on the bathing platform, and on the flybridge. The hull design follows Bill Dixon advanced Dual Mode semi displacement shape with a deep vee bow, shallow dead rise stern, wide chines, and a distinctive soft middle section. Power will be from twin Cummins 425hp which deliver a 22 knots top speed, an 18 knots cruise, and an economic long range 10 knots giving a 1000 nautical miles before filling back the 3000 litres fuel tank.

New Model: Sessa C35 Sports Coupe

Sessa continues to move forward always presenting newer and richer models, and this new C35 Sports Coupe is its next step in a range which becomes always more interesting in looks, fitting out and finishing. Designed as all recent Sessa's by Christian Grande this new sport cruiser represents the next step in a replacement to one of this yard’s greatest achievements and best seller that was the C35, 35 Oyster, or 34 Oyster in its earlier forms delivered to a total of over five hundred models in a ten years run. The C35 Sport Coupe follows recent demanded styles for a hard top and is inspired by the style of the acclaimed C68 flagship, or as I see it similar to the also fall 2009 introduced C38. The clever touch is surely the redistribution of the interior space offered in a clever modular style. The internal layout has been designed to allow the owner a huge freedom of choice. To live in an open space due to a large common area and a single cabin or, by using the partition, to create two equally spacious cabins, one at the bow and the other at the stern, each equipped with private access to both the kitchen and the bathroom. The aft deck also follows recent styles as seen on the 38 but in a smaller size with a single level area offering a C-shaped settee, sun lounger to port, and an outdoor kitchen behind the helm to starboard. Sessa also continues touches of extra luxury on the new medium sized C35 Sport Coupe with the option of having the Design Version which gives a galley fitted out by renowned kitchen specialist Boffi, finished with a rolled steel worktop, and ivory lacquered cabinets. Power is from a standard Volvo twin 220hp or optional 260hp.

Projects: Prestige 400 Flybridge, Prestige 350 Flybridge

Prestige will present a huge revamp to its models line with new projects and changes to current boats expected to happen in all the range. Pictured above is the 400 Flybridge which is to my understanding a further development of the 39 introduced in 2009. Such a fast change is surprising considering this is a new model only in its infancy. May be the Prestige 39 did not bring the desired sales, but I am sure that we will never know the real answer to this question. What the 400 surely offers is a more sport, sleek and elegant looks with the side windows being fully integrated and ending to the sides of the flybridge. The 400 designed by Garroni above the waterline, and under shape by acclaimed US architect Michael Peters follows themes of spaces characterized with huge views on the seas. The interior will offer a twin cabin en suited layout below, plus an extra two berths available from converting the upper saloon. Power is from standard twin 330hp, or optional 380hp Cummins. Prestige presents the project for its new entry level model the 350 Flybridge. Designed as all the line by Garroni, with hull by J&J and concept by Premorei, the 350 Flybridge follows a style similar to the 60 flagship and also to the new 400 above. A comfortable flybridge cruiser with a lower deck with two cabins and the always much in demand big view windows. The accommodation plan of the 350 will be an owners double to fore, a two single which converts to a double guest, and a shower head. A C-shaped saloon which also becomes an extra double berth, and a galley on the main deck complete the interior layout. The Prestige will also be powered by stern drive engines, with the builder claims a 30% better economy and for this to be the smallest flybridge motor cruiser. Actually Galeon offer this on the 330 since a few years now, and back in the eighties I also remember the Fairline 31 Corniche, or Gobbi 31 Cabin offering a flybridge with stern drive. Although thanks to new joystick technology I am sure the Prestige 350 Flybridge marina manoeuvring today will be much easier then in those times. Power will be from twin Volvo 220hp diesel engines.

New Model: Rio 42 Air 2010

Continuing with its latest redesigns Rio presents the new 42 Air 2010 model. As was the case for the new 42 Art this model is completely different from the old 42 Air, which was a stretched bathing platform extended version of the previous 40 model. The 42 Air 2010 is the hard top version of the Naples 2010 show presented Art. The Rio design team presented a very good looking integrated full of glass hard top, and a bit similar in looks to that of the recent 36 and 46. The 42 Air keeps also important themes like economic fuel efficient stern drive propulsion, full beam mid ship stateroom, and well spaced functional exterior deck. The 42 Air 2010 will also boast just as its open 42 Art sister, the unique feature of high low bathing platform on a stern drive powered sport cruiser. Speed is a 35 knots max, and a 27 cruise with standard twin Volvo 330hp engines.

INBUILD ~ Galeon 385 HT Part 5 0f 7

A huge step forward has gone into the building process of the 385 HT from the last time when we showed the hull stringers being attached to the hull. The above photo which equals to part five of the series shows hull number two with the deck and hull attached, as are the side railings. Fitting out is being done on deck by three workers and this was end of July. What this photo also shows are wide side decks too. Not bad if one is in his older years. This hull two should be the one to be debuted in Cannes. I also was just fortunate enough to see unedited photos of the completed hull number one which has a bronze colored orange, and I am speechless. This has to be one of Galeon's and Tony Castro best looking boats and should be a show stopper for anyone looking for an eleven or twelve metre size sport cruiser, but also for any passionate boater. Watch this spot to see more before the Cannes show, where you should see the 385 HT in its completed glory before its debut!

Projects: Hatteras GT54, Hatteras GT63

Hatteras presents the projects of two new models which show the expanding of the new GT line, which will start with the launching of the GT60 this coming fall. Pictured above is the first of these new projects what will be the lightest, smallest of the Hatteras line the GT54. A completely new model versus the 54 Convertible which decreases a couple inches of overall length, but increases beam by over a feet versus the model it replaces. The beam addition adds space to the GT54 having a three double cabins with two heads lower deck. Construction continues Hatteras resin infusion method build which reduces weight and adds strength. The GT54 keeps on its Carolina style with a smooth shear line, dynamic bow flare, and a foredeck carefully balanced with the low super structure. Hull shape is the Hatteras convex bow variable Vee with deep propeller pockets aft. Power is from twin Cat engines with a standard 1150hp or optional 1600hp. This later option giving a 41 knots top speed. Hatteras design project team has been very busy lately and in less of a year time a total of three new models should be presented. The GT63 project pictured above is in my understanding a replacement of the 64 Convertible, although in the press release I received this does not say. If compared with the 64 the GT63 adds sixteen centimetres of more beam, looses the large hull view windows to mid ship, and will feature a standard four cabins three shower heads layout. The looks of the GT63 by the rendering above show also a more classic taste also thanks to the wooden stern, and a more higher bow. Hatteras has always approached a modern global Carolina design but always with a clean distinction like a soft bow flare, and a smooth shear line. Power which is an important part of the new GT series goes again above the forty plus barrier with the large Cats 1900hp option doing 41 knots of max and a 36 cruise. Another strong data of the new GT models is a 400 NM range. Unveiling of the GT63 is set for the 2011 Miami show in February. www.hatterasyachts.com

New Model: Rodman 50 Muse

Rodman have gone a long way since in 2006 they launched the first of there luxury yacht range designed by Italian Fulvio De Simoni the 54 Muse. This was followed by the 74 a year later, then the 44, and latest the fourth 50 model. This one announced in mid 2009, and unit one launched at the end of that same year. Unlike its predecessor the 44, the 50 Muse takes a more conservative approach to its interior with a classic three cabin plan having an owners suite to fore, a guest shower head, and two double cabins to mid ship. I am sure the large circle windows to mid ship of the hull would have made you think that you have a full beam cabin there but so far this is not so. The main deck also is another typical of a Mediterranean yacht with a split level saloon having a C-shaped settee, helm station to starboard, unit, and the C-shaped galley on the raised part to port. Power for the conservative inside, and modern outside 50 Muse is from twin Volvo 670hp, which give a 32 knots max, and a 26 knots cruise delivering a 300 nautical miles range.

Project: Mig 43 HT

The Mig 43 HT is a new hard top version for this recent addition to the line for this Rome based Italian builder. The hard top designed by Studio Mignarelli from Ancona is becoming always more requested in boat of all sizes due to its comfort, so Mig Marine which just re branded from the old Marine Yachting name decided to offer this accessory on one of its latest models, the 2006 presented 43. The hard top of the 43 follows classic looks and will have a huge central opening of about ninety per cent of the area. The Mig 43 hard top will also have clear sides in order to allow more air circulation. For the remaining the 43 HT keeps the plans of the standard 43 with huge sun lounger aft, C-shaped settee, helm station outside and a lower deck with a two or three cabins plan. Power is the usual good performance from Mig with the 43 powered by twin Volvo 370hp stern drives giving forty knots max, and 34 knots cruising speed.

New Model: Otam 58 Millennium Open

Seems like a totally reinvented model but actually the hull lines of the new 58 Millennium Open come from the 1997 presented 55, which recently became the 58 thanks to a redesign of the hard top. But the 58 Millennium Open is a new boat from what is above the hull, and this includes the interior cabin area, exterior aft deck layout, and the super structure. Surprisingly although newer the 58 Millennium Open lines and windshield do embrace more classic looks then to the older HT version. Below the offer is for two layouts with the standard being two cabins owners room to fore, guest midship, and a crew room. Second choice gives a fore cabin with two french beds, a second guest double to midship, and a crew room which moves to fore. Power is from twin 1650hp Cat engines which gives this 28 tons plus Sport Yacht a well respected 55 knots speed.

Projects: Ferretti 620, Ferretti 500

Ferretti presents two projects set to launch for the fiftieth edition of the Genoa boat show. These motor yachts projects feature two similar aspects, the most important is that they are both a further development of another model, and the second is that for the first time we see Ferretti repeating a model designation. Ferretti in fact produced a 620 from 2000 till 2005, and the 500 from 2003 till 2007. Pictured above is the 620 which replaces and reexamines the 2007 presented 592. We see differences surely in the addition of four extra large windows, an extended aft deck which has a central teak table and a passarelle to port side, a larger crew cabin now being full beam, and the change of the fuel tanks position which serve as insulation for the master stateroom to mid ship. The Ferretti 500 is a further development of the fall 2008 launched 470. Just like the 620 above the new 500 will be extended aft in the cockpit, and be added of more windows in the lower deck. These being a total of four large, two per side horizontal shaped opening port holes. As it is expected Ferretti and Zuccon keep the working successful elements on both these models, like the very sought astern looking galley, which thanks to the swinging window joins the interior with the exterior. For those new comers to the yacht scene Ferretti pioneered the swinging window back in the mid eighties.

New Model: Kha Shing 100 Monte Fino RPH

Kha Shing has recently launched hull number one for the new 100 Monte Fino RPH. These last initials standing for raised pilot house. The 100 RPH was actually born as a 96 project and is designed as the latest 76 model of the Monte Fino range by Humphrey's Yacht design who followed Italian European looks and style with a smart, read not looking heavy on the lines integrated raised pilot house. The 100 Monte Fino RPH comes with a standard radar arch hard top integrated as the picture above, but an alternative enclosed bridge is also available. As all Monte Fino this is a semi custom build, meaning any other 100 should only be similar to the outside of any other 100 RPH. In hull one the owner decided for an an owners stateroom on the main deck, with the other guest cabins below. Crew quarters for four persons are located aft behind of the central located engine room. Power is for twin Cats 1622hp engines, which are genuinely small for this size of super yacht, but I think also reflects on the usual semi displacement hull of the Monte Fino range. Speed if for a 16 knots max, 13 knots cruise.
Technical Data:

Project: Azimut Grande 100

Azimut presents the project rendering for the 100 of the new Grande line. This new 100 will be the entry level of this new range which starts at one hundred feet. So far Azimut has given little details, although the exterior line do suggest the usual Stefano Righini contemporary modern evoking lines. As usual with Azimut, windows seems to be getting bigger then to the previous model. I wonder if if the quote from a notable yacht architect in a 2001 Italian magazine that we will have a boat made of complete glass will ever come real. Surely Azimut is always challenging itself in this direction. This new Grande 100 of the flybridge line, adds with the other two projects announced earlier this year being the 126 expected to launch in 2012, and the 120 SL which is planned for the end of this Summer.

New Model: Galeon 350 HTC

Another PowerYacht exclusive set to debut in the coming September month Cannes show. This is Galeon's new 350 HTC, the three letters meaning for Hard Top Coupe. Based on an extended hull which comes from the successful 330 series, the new 350 HTC puts the elements we have seen on the bigger Galeon's into a smaller package. Signs of these are evident in the glass hard top similar to what you see on the 700 Raptor and quality fittings in the upholstery, and furniture. Galeon unlike other builders also opted for a complete new super structure tooling for the 350 HTC, showing bigger windows in the side, and a large windshield compared to the also new for 2010 340 Fly unveiled in January. Apart the super structure differences the 350 HTC keeps various successful elements from the 340 Fly with some of these also coming from the 330 series. I like the clever cockpit settee this like the 340, and the inside galley saloon up arrangement permitting a unique three cabin five berths plan below as found on the 330 line. Power is twin Volvo 220hp, up to a faster optional 300hp choice which gives a 35 knots top speed.
Technical Data:
LOA - 11.32 m (37.1ft)

Project: Blu Martin ST52

Blu Martin surprise the market presenting the project of the ST52, which will sit in between the last year launched ST55 and the over sixty delivered 1390 Sea Top models. Measuring at an over all length just above sixteen metres, the latest Blu Martin will offer a three cabin layout, with a full beam owners suite located to mid ship. A single berth crew cabin is located to mid ship behind the owners suite. Standard power will be from twin Volvo 435hp with IPS pods which the yard estimates will give a top speed of 32 knots and a cruise of 27. Alternative more powerful options come from Cummins 600hp engines with ZF pods, or traditional line shaft choice. Launch and completion of hull number one is forecast for the fall of 2010, just in time for an official presentation at the October Genoa show.

New Model: Monte Carlo Yachts MCY76

So much have been the talk about Beneteau Group going into the large motor yacht market. The official news was in 2007 and the fall of 2008 marked the creation of the Monte Carlo Yachts brand. But I think the bells where ringing much before this, when the Prestige models started making success with the 34 and 46 models back in the early part of the second millennium decade. The Monte Carlo MCY76 which launched at the end of July, just a month after showing some rendering details is a challenge to the market not only from a brand perspective, but also from a design point of view. It also represents a huge effort from Beneteau Group who for the new Monte Carlo brand moved everything to Italy where logistics to build this kind of yacht seems to be easier. The Monte Carlo MCY76 is a step forward both from its builders and Venetian designers Nuvolari Lenard and may be here lies the script of its success. For those that did not read the project preview PowerYacht did a month ago, here is a summary. The MCY76 is a three cabin or four cabin motor yacht, with a total of seven choices between lower, main and upper deck. Innovation comes in many forms from the solar powered hard top option, to the layout of the main deck, exterior looks which are a good hybrid mix of explorer and a modern fast yacht, and in the construction method. Power is from twin MAN 1200hp standard or 1400hp optional with ZF pods propulsion which delivers a top speed of 31 knots.

Project: Tornado 50

It is very unusual for someone to promote a boat upside down showing what is often called by the experts the living hull part! The Italian boat builder Tornado returns in the so called yacht size of over fifty feet with the 50 project, set to launch this year. The Tornado 50 is a step towards a bigger size from this Italian Rome builder, who wants with this project to put more spaces but keeping in line with the successful elements which its client enjoy, like a classic line and propulsion efficiency. Tornado is in fact promising a lot of features coming from the 38, which this builder so far delivered in over four hundred units. The 50 will surely offer more generous spaces, although cabin numbers or layout have so far not been called for. But what the yard is promising is a deep Vee hull typical of US powerboat derivation with a fine entry and an infamous bell shaped keel aft. Engines and propulsion will be Volvo IPS which guarantee a maximum efficiency and minimum space put to better use for the comfort onboard.

New Model: Nordic Tugs 39

Nordic Tugs has launched the May announced new 39. Successor to the popular Nordic Tug 37, the new 39 is built on the same Lynn Senour designed hull as that of its predecessor, but features a number of significant refinements, many of these in response to suggestions from current owners. The new cruiser made its first sea trials prior to its public debut at the Nordic Tugs rendezvous, on June 10th-13th, in Anacortes, Washington. Nordic Tugs President and CEO Andy Lund described the new vessel as an evolutionary advancement developed to offer a better cruising experience. Most evident among the changes are larger windows at salon and pilot house levels, designed to offer passengers a more expansive view and to improve sight lines from the helm. A look inside the salon reveals a new U-shaped settee with enhanced cushioning and a pull-out berth similar to that of the 37. Facing the settee is an optional overhead-mounted flat-screen HDTV. In the galley, a Force 10 electric cook top, Sharp convection microwave oven and top-loading freezer are now standard. To help improve ventilation, a new Dutch door and two larger sliding windows, all by Diamond Sea-Glaze, are integrated into the salon. In the pilot house, the helm console has been expanded to accommodate large chart plotter and radar display screens. A standard Llebroc captain’s chair has been specified to provide improved comfort, important for proper watch-keeping during lengthy passages. Below, the guest cabin of the new Nordic Tugs 39 offers a pull-out lower berth that serves as a settee during the day, and a wide bunk at night. The re-designed head features a new Tecma toilet, a fully molded shower stall with a bench seat, and an innovative sliding door that glides open and closed on a space-saving curved track. Like all Nordic Tugs models in the company’s 2011 line-up, the new 39 will feature LED lighting, including interior lights from Imtra, selected for their warmer tone compared to the harsher blue cast of earlier fixtures. LED lights, Lund noted, use about one-fifth the electricity required by halogen lamps and produce considerably less heat. LED navigation lights, he added, typically last ten times as long as incandescent bulbs. Other new features for 2011 Nordic Tugs 32 feet and up include a Maretron NMEA 2000 network extending from stem to stern and including the engine room, helm station and signal mast. The network offers plug-and-play installation of electronics, gauges and equipment ranging from chart plotters and rudder angle indicators to ultrasonic tank level indicators, depth sounders and the GPS. The system is compatible with the most popular electronics brands for display on the Maretron monitor at the helm. Standard power is a single 380hp Cummins diesel paired with the Vessel View helm display for continuous monitoring of engine and generator operating status.

Project: Riviera 53 Enclosed Flybridge

Aussie's Riviera announced the project for the new 53 Enclosed Flybridge on day one of down under largest Sydney boat show, the past end of July. This new project retains the distinctive Riviera enclosed flybridge style of a yacht with sportfish capability and an interior full of the latest amenities incorporating newest generation of technology and comfort. That means that the 53 Enclosed Flybridge combines contemporary thinking with traditional Riviera elements. There should be a lot of boat for its length and a great many key design features including an enclosed flybridge, internal staircase, full beam master cabin, a total of three cabins, two bathrooms aft galley and the flexibility of choice with a range of different pod drive and engine plant configurations. The 53 Enclosed Flybridge will also be among the smallest Sportfish Yacht to offer a full beam owners cabin. As many of the latest Riviera, the 53 project is being entirely designed around pods which goes a long way from the 2007 launched 4400 Sport Yacht this builder first unit with the drives and is due for release in March 2011. Today Riviera offers pods on seven of its models, most being exclusive to this type of propulsion and others an optional choice.

New Model: Abati 58 Eastport

This new Abati 58 Eastport builds on the first model from this Ligurian builder that is the seventeen units delivered 55 Portland and adds a flybridge to its superstructure. Just as the model it is based upon the 58 Eastport keeps the very traditional lobster yacht lines, and also the unique separate entrances cabin arrangement. This means that each cabin has a separate door stairway from the main deck, a very unusual arrangement but very practical especially with guests on board. Apart offering three cabins the 58 Eastport also features a lower saloon and galley. The new flybridge of the 58 Eastport with central mast will also have a center positioned helm station, and two side benches. Not really an entertainment area but a convivial area for few during navigation. Power for the 58 Eastport will be from twin 800hp which gives a top speed of 31 knots, and a cruise of 25.

News: Nord West August 2010

SHOWING NEW DYNAMIC POSITIONING SYSTEM
When activated the Dynamic Positioning System maintains your boat´s heading and holds it in position, even in a strong current or in windy conditions. The system uses twin GPS receivers in the special antenna to determine the boat’s position and heading. A perfect feature for waiting at the fuel dock or for a bridge or lock to open. When mooring, the Dynamic Positioning System enables you to “Hold Station” so that your crew can prepare fenders and lines totally stress free. The function is amazing, but it is something which needs to be seen to be fully understood. Nord West therefore show a short video on its website to demonstrate how the system works, but as anything it must be tried to truly appreciate its benefits. You will of course be able to see the function live in the Nord West harbour during the boat show Open Yard at Vindön/Orust on the 27th to 29th of August.

Project: Princess 64

Princess present the project of the 64, set to be unveiled in September at the Southampton show and replacing the 62 model. This new project seems based on the 62, with the addition of the hydraulic bathing platform, changes to the flybridge and main deck saloon layout, a larger port hole in the fore VIP cabin, and a more sporty aft looking radar arch. Thankfully Princess kept the good four cabins layout, which gave this model a good sales push considering that very few nineteen, twenty metre motor yachts offer this. This was surely a deal breaker for the 62. Performance estimates have not been announced although I do imagine the standard twin Volvo 900hp to be good for a 31 knots top speed, similar to what the 62 does with twin Cats 865hp.

Project: Custom Line 26 Navetta Crescendo

Ferretti Custom Line will present a world premiere at the Cannes show: the 26 Navetta Crescendo, the very first model to be produced in a new semi-displacement line. Crescendo in facts represents a further evolution in Ferretti Custom Line’s semi-displacement line, evoking the universe of classical music within the sphere of Italian made style culture. The new 26 Navetta Crescendo, is a natural development of the previous 26 Navetta in the semi displacement line, and is the result of the close working relationship between Studio Zuccon International Project, the Ferretti Group’s Advanced Yacht Technology naval research and design centre, and the team of architects and designers at the Centro Stile of Ferretti Group. This team has revamped the model most notably in the windows now bigger in all areas, in the sky lounge or raised pilot house which is now extended, and a sun deck which is connected with a stairway up top. This is a first model in the revamped semi-displacement line, specially designed for the owners who prefer slow motion, a cruise in complete silence and comfort. The new model continues with the evolution of the compact semi displacement Super Yacht concept and measures 26 metres in length and almost seven in beam, with classical lines in which innovative solutions of both a formal and functional nature have been developed. In order to increase on-board space, put it to even better use, and make it even more comfortable. Moreover, the new pocket sized super yacht once again confirms the attention that Ferretti pays to the environment, guaranteeing great consumption efficiency and a considerable sailing range. The classical external lines take up the well-known shape of the Navetta line, fully complementing the interior design, and producing a harmonious set of solutions which use space to the advantage of more comfortable living. The light coloured elm wood chosen for this first yacht, and the sand and dove grey colours used for the on-board details create a warm, welcoming environment. Furnishings, fabrics and decor can be personalised according to owners’ preferences who, with the aid of the Centro Stile architects and designers, can choose from the furnishing proposals offered by top Italian and international companies. Ferretti Custom Line 26 Navetta Crescendo can accommodate ten or twelve guests in a five or six cabin layout choice. In both cases, the master suite has been located on the main deck, and a crew area accommodating four is found aft. The 26 Navetta Crescendo is powered with standard twin MAN 900hp which give a top speed of 14 knots, or optional 1100hp delivering plus two knots in wide open throttle.

INBUILD ~ Galeon 385 HT Part 4 of 7

Part four of the Galeon new 385HT dedicated Inbuild section. In this photo to tell you with a metaphor you are seeing the rib bones of the 385HT, called in the nautical term as stringers. To compare it to a human body the gel coat is the skin, glass and resin are the blood and meat, and the bones and ribs are the stringers. The ribs are usually put in a strategic place in order to withstand the pressures, and are usually what keeps the boat together in the worst moments. A hull breakage usually starts with a stringer breaking loose. The Galeon 385HT designed by Tony Castro shows a very sound solid structure with ten horizontal and four vertical stringers able to withstand pressures associated for a forty knots top speed this sport cruiser will be able to do with the most powerful engines.

Project: Mulder 72 Convertible

After the recent full delivery of the 92 Flybridge to an Egyptian owner in April, Mulder Shipyard was recently commissioned a new 72 Convertible for a German client. The yacht will be based on the 68 Convertible, but in a slightly extended size with a total length of 22 metres. Mulder has already built several 68 foot Convertible projects. Designed by Guido de Groot, the new 72 will be flagship of the Convertible line and will offer an exceptional intelligent layout, with a modern interior meeting the owners requirements. The owners suite will be located to aft while the VIP cabin is situated to foreship, both having private toilets and showers. The yacht also has a crew cabin with head and shower in the aft ship. The exterior will feature a dark blue hull and an off-white superstructure combined with an Estek deck and various stainless steel accessories. A large garage for a 3.5 metre jet propelled tender is situated aft. The yacht’s wheelhouse has a large sliding roof powered by a hydraulic system. The fore part of the superstructure will contain a large skylight over the light and spacious salon. With its elegant lines, the new 72 Convertible has a graceful appearance similar to all Mulder Convertibles. The yard has already started with the construction of the new yacht and delivery is planned for 2011. In two months, the yard is also due to deliver a new 59 Convertible, a 73 Wheelhouse and a 77 Wheelhouse. With its extensive experience in building customised aluminium motor yachts, Mulder has served many international clients over the years. The construction of the 72 Convertible adds another all-aluminium yacht to the Mulder fleet.

New Model: Back Cove 30

Back Cove launched the awaited 30 at the start of this season, what is a replacement for the 2003 launched 29. With this new model Back Cove continues a traditional cruiser style representing the Down East lobster boat associated with Maine's proud boat building heritage. The Back Cove 30 is another example of everything that makes the Down East lobster boat a work of art with details as the traditional spoon bow and her gently slopped transom. Below the surface the new Back Cove 30 is modern and contemporary, continuing what we are used to see from this USA builder. A resin infused, with sixteen degrees dead rise Vee hull with prop recess and standard trim tabs offers a quiet and comfortable ride. With her standard 315hp Yanmar diesel the 40 cruises at 20 knots and top out at 25, and with optional higher horsepower, she will cruise at 25 knots. Around the docks, you will appreciate the maneuverability provided by her standard bow thruster and if circumstances require it an optional stern thruster is also available. Her deck hardware is as rugged as the coastline she calls home.

Project: Cerri 70 Sport

Unlike the bigger sister of the 70 which are the 86 delivered in twelve models and the 102 Flying Sport launched in 2009, the Cerri 70 will have a Sport version which will be without the top flybridge deck. Designed by MDS Engineering the 70 Sport offers a distinct hard top which opens on the aft main deck, where two exterior L-shaped settees are located. Another feature which differentiates it from the 70 Flying Sport is the no radar arch form of the coach roof with this coming integrated and streamlined from the upper structure. For the rest and always minus the second helm and sundeck area up top, the 70 Sport is a similar project to the Flying Sport version available in a three or four cabin version, galley up or down, and one or two saloons interior plans. Power will be from twin MAN or MTU engines from 1500 up to 1800hp with surface drives propulsion which should make good for the usual forty knots top speed as the other Cerri models. As the Flying Sport, the 70 Sport version has a build time of around one year and a half depends to the customization which as with any Cerri model is very high. The lucky client who orders hull one gets also a special deal.

Class 1 - Sweden Grand Prix

Race 1
Team Abu Dhabi's Giovanni Carpitella and Rashed Al Tayer celebrated their maiden Grand Prix win in a dramatic and incident-filled first race of the Swedish Grand Prix, which saw the race red-flagged twice, with pole-sitters Welmax crashing out on lap 1 and both Relekta and Fazza going-out on lap 1 of the re-start. A third start saw a reduced fleet take the green flag, with Team Abu Dhabi, winning the drag-race to the now infamous first turn buoy, ahead of Skydive Dubai and Primatist. Carpitella and Al Tayer, in their first race together, were able to control the race from the front, to complete the reduced 9-lap race in 21mins 47.98secs at an average speed of 178.35kmh to win by eight seconds. A podium for Skydive Dubai's new pairing of Abdullah Al Mehairbi and Talib Al Sayed, in their first competitive outing in a Class 1 together, was some consolation for them and the team, after seeing their team-mates sidelined on the second restart, with Guido Cappellini and Nicola Giorgi capitalising on the earlier incidents to take a welcome podium spot in third place in Primatist. For pole-sitters and pre-race favourites, Jorn Tandberg and Kolbjorn Selmer, any hopes of converting their win in the Edox Pole Position earlier in the day into a race-win, ended dramatically at the first corner of lap 1, crashing out of the Swedish Grand Prix after taking evasive action to avoid Fazza, with both pilots emerging unscathed from the escape hatch of the upturned Welmax.
The restart saw Team Abu Dhabi lead into the first corner with Relekta's Christian Zaborowski and Paul Gaiser going into the turn in second place after another impressive start, only to hook the boat right into the path of the oncoming World Champions, Arif Al Zafeen and Nadir bin Hendi, who drove into and over the back of the stricken raceboat, launching Fazza skywards. Both teams now face a race against time through the night to see if there is any chance of getting both boats to the start-line for tomorrow's race.
Race 2
Fazza's Arif Al Zafeen and Nadir Bin Hendi put yesterday's race-retirement behind them to ease to a comfortable win in race 2 of the Swedish Grand Prix. Rashed Al Tayer and Giovanni Carpitella capped an impressive weekend for Team Abu Dhabi, finishing second, to make it a hat-trick of podium successes in Uddevalla, with Abdullah Al Mehairbi and Talib Al Sayed in Skydive Dubai completing the podium and make it an all U.A.E. affair. The World Champions took no time in bouncing-back from their hair-raising collision with Relekta in race 1 that launched Fazza skywards and put Relekta out of today's race, winnng the three-boat U.A.E. drag race to the first turn, the scene of yesterday's carnage. Once out in front Al Zafeen and Bin Hendi never looked threatened, going on to complete the 16 laps in 39mins 19.29secs at an average speed of 178.99kmh to win by over 20 seconds. Despite today's second place, to compliment a third place in the Edox Pole Position and a first Class 1 win for Rashed Al Tayer and Giovanni Carpitella, the Team Abu Dhabi throttleman was not happy with his rivals on the run to the first turn. Skydive Dubai's Abdullah Al Mehairbi and Talib Al Sayed celebrated their new partnership in Class 1, taking their second podium of the weekend - with Al Sayed giving a masterful solo rendition of the U.A.E. national anthem on the podium when the sound system failed, which was greeted by cheers and rapturous applause from the crowd. A second, consecutive points-haul for Italians Guido Cappellini and Nicola Giorgi, finishing fourth in Primatist, puts them into fourth place in the Championship standings, as they look ahead to their home Grand Prix in October.
But there was bitter frustration for Jorn Tandberg, Kolbjorn Selmer and the Welmax technicians when the boat narrowly failed to make the start, despite their night-long efforts to repair and have the boat ready to race after yesterday's first corner crash. Today's 17th career-win for Al Zafeen and Bin Hendi puts them within one win of the Victory Team record of 18, shared by former multiple Champions, Saeed Al Tayer and Ali Nasser, and also puts the World Champions 22-points clear of their team-mates at the top of the overall Championship standings. Class 1 now heads to Stresa on Lake Maggiore for the Italian Grand Prix and the European Championship decider in October, and what promises to be an interesting showdown between the new team on the block, Team Abu Dhabi, who lead the European points table by two-points from the current World Champions, Fazza.
Update: Team Abu Dhabi will walk away with maximum points from this weekend’s Swedish Grand Prix, after today’s race winners’, Arif Al Zafeen and Nadir Bin Nendi, were handed a post-race time penalty for an overtaking infringement on the start-lap. The 27.62secs long-lap time penalty added to the World Champions overall race time gives Rashed Al Tayer and Giovanni Carpitella a second Grand Prix win in two days, and on the weekend that marked the team’s full time entry into the Class 1 World Powerboat Championship. Victory Team general manager, Gianfranco Venturelli, confirmed that the team has lodged a protest against the penalty.

Project: Moonen 133

The Dutch Moonen Shipyards has recently signed the contract for its largest super yacht to date, the 133. Engineering has already started on this impressive order by a repeat client who has already owned a Moonen 84 and a 97. When launched in 2012 this will be the smallest luxury yacht ever to carry a submarine for two persons and one hundred metres depth capability. The Moonen 133 can be described as a cross-over, blending rugged adventurous looks with modern super yacht stylishness and classic elements. This elegant explorer Super Yacht has a low profile, excellent sea handling performance and a very long range. The Moonen design team was responsible for the overall design concept, with René van der Velden adding his delicate touch to the styling. The owner has also combined his wish for a larger yacht with a desire to stay within a length that allows access to small places. In doing so, the Moonen 133 remains a family boat that does not need an excessive number of crew, normal number of six, with the option for an one extra member. Thanks to the surprising amount of volume for a forty metre super yacht, there is room for six spacious guest cabins. The Moonen 133 has a high bow and full-beam master suite forward. A large area is set aside on the wheelhouse deck to stow a giant tender, launched by a powerful centre line crane that will allow the crew to deploy the boat over either side. There will also be a submarine stored on deck, which will be launched by a hydraulic ramp. Once the submarine is in the water an immense swim platform opens up to offer maximum water sports entertainment. This concept is supported by the large lazarette, which is ideal for carrying fishing, diving gear and motorbikes. The interior will have an open feeling, with large windows bathing the living spaces with lots of light. Artline will provide the interior styling, the third time this leading Dutch studio has worked with the owner. The Moonen 133 is planned to make its public debut at the 2012 Monaco Yacht Show.

Projects: Beneteau 34 Flyer Gran Turismo, Beneteau 38 Flyer Gran Turismo

Beneteau presents a new range with the new 38 and 34 Flyer Gran Turismo projects to make there debut at the fall of 2010. Pictured above is the smallest of the two new Flyer Gran Turismo the 34. Designed by Andreani the 34 will be based on the lines of the 32 Monte Carlo which in fact it will replace, but features an extended longer hard top, large view windows, and more spacious bathing platform. The 34 Flyer Gran Turismo will also feature a large U-shaped dinette to fore versus the L-shaped settee, single berth combination of the old 32. Below the water line on the living part of the 34, will be the much acclaimed patented Air-Step hull with extended plane aft. Pictured above is the larger of the new Flyer Gran Turimo the 38, which is also further development of the 37 Monte Carlo that it replaces. Again just as the 34 the difference here is for a longer extended hard top, bigger view windows outside, and expanded platform. Below the same theme for the 37 Monte Carlo is repeated with two cabins, an L-shaped saloon, and galley composing the accommodation area. Power for the Pierangelo Andreani designed Sport Cruiser which also features the patented Air-Step and extended plane hull will be from a maximum power of twin Volvo 300hp diesels. Launching is scheduled for Cannes in September. www.beneteau.com

Class 1 - Sweden Preview

Fazza 3 will be looking to complete a hat-trick of season-win-doubles in Uddevalla this weekend when the UIM Class 1 World Powerboat Championship makes its Grand Prix debut in Sweden the coming weekend from the sixth to the eight August. The defending World Championsof Fazza 3 are in imperious form and seemingly unbeatable. But both men know that they will come under increasing pressure from a trio of outfits, as they look to extend their Championship lead and close in on the long-standing team record of 18 race wins, held by former triple World Champion Saeed Al Tayer and double World Champion Ali Nasser. Leading the assault to try and un-seat the Championship leaders are their team-mates, race-veteran, Mohammed Al Marri, making his 70th Grand Prix appearance and Abdullah Al Mehairbi, running for the first time as Skydive Dubai, previously Fazza 1. They know that they will have to be on the top of their game, not only if they are to close the gap on Fazza 3, but to stave off the challenge they too face from Welmax and Team Abu Dhabi the ex Spirit of Dubai. Welmax head the Norwegian attack and will be hoping that they can repeat their scintillating showing in qualifying last time out - their win putting them on equal terms in first place in the Edox Pole Position Championship with Fazza 3 - and go one better than second-place in race 1 in Arendal, as they look to reduce the points deficit between them and the team dubbed 'the black alliance', by Welmax wheel-man, Selmer. Italians Giovanni Carpitella and Giorgio Manuzzi were the stars of the show in Norway, climbing the podium steps three times. But with the confirmation by the Abu Dhabi International Marine Sports Club of the full-time participation of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi in the Championship, a switch of driver for Carpitella will see him partner with Rashed Al Tayer - who made his Class 1 debut at the Brazilian Grand Prix earlier in the year - running in the new Victory-design under the colours of Team Abu Dhabi. Primatist's Italian-duo, have put the frustration of their disappointing first races together behind them, and having worked on their charge in between Grands Prix, will line-up in Uddevalla looking to realise the podium potential of both driver-throttleman and boat combination. Looking to improve on a very solid first outing together are Christian Zaborowski and Paul Gaiser, who showed on occasion in Norway that their Maritimo-designed and built raceboat, Relekta, has real pace. Zabo Racing team principal, Jan Zaborowski, is confident that increasingly improved performance will come with the more time on the water Christian and Paul clock-up. The Grand Prix weekend kicks-off with first practice on Friday (6 August) afternoon, followed by the Class 1 Aspen Speed Run. Second practice on Saturday morning is immediately followed by qualifying in the Edox Pole Position and Race 1, 53.87Nm - 13 laps, including one long lap. A final practice session on Sunday morning is followed in the afternoon by Race 2, 66.45Nm - 16 laps, including two long laps.

Project: Wider 42

Wider is the new brand founded by Tilli Antonelli, after the ex Pershing boss left the company he formed in 1985 at the start of this year and above is the rendering of its first model the 42. Designed by Fulvio de Simoni for the topsides and concept, and Mark Wilson for the underwater hull shape the Wider 42 seems to continue the recent innovation vain which seems convolve small medium sized boat builders of the shoe shaped peninsula. But do not think that this concept is only innovative for the centre ship which expands 50% of the cockpit space thanks to the expanding of the sides. This is just the visiting ticket! For me the Wider 42 intrigue factor is the centre console, rib, powerboat, and cruiser concept mash up all in one. Other innovations for the Wider 42 will be a new energy saving CAN bus electrical system by Ascon, interiors which will be ultra modern, deck finished by Esthec a material which represents teak in looks and feel but is also fireproof and does not require special maintenance, and a tender launch system which can house a quite large jet bike or rib. Interior wise the 42 will offer a fore peak cabin with a galley, a settee which transforms to a double berth, and a separate shower head. Construction of Wider 42 continues what Antonelli started with Pershing in 1995 of vacuum infusion Scrimp system being used in a carbon fiber and Vinilester resin composite mix. The carbon used in construction will also be visible in some parts like the cabin sides creating artistic elements with this unique material. Wider also reintroduces a concept very much abandoned with hull designer Mark Wilson who is three times powerboat world champion in class P2, and twice in P1 doing the hull of the 42 around racing offshore boats with a two stepped hull and a stem which delivers a minimum angle even at low planning speeds. The Wider brand although new is experienced and joining Antonelli will be Paolo Favilla ex Pershing CEO in 2009, Vincenzo Sulpizi ex Pershing interior designer and project manager, and Laura Carboni also coming from Pershing taking care of public relations. The Wider will also be built in the old Pershing establishment used from 1990 till 2004 in the Marche region, and a 35, and fifty feet models should follow the launch of the 42 which is expected for Genoa.

New Model: Princess V56

The Princess V56 is a further tweaking of the V53 launched in 2006. With this model Princess return to the fashion of expanding and changing model designation with the extension of an aft bathing platform. In the V56 the bathing platform follows recent trends with a hydraulic up and down movement which makes tender launching and recovery easy. Thanks to this now the V56 unlike the V53 can carry two tenders, one in the garage and another on the platform. Not bad for a sport yacht measuring seventeen meters. The V56 will also differ to the replacing 53 with the addition of a new bigger engined twin 900hp Volvo engine option, which should make a light weight top speed of 38 knots. Inside and in the cockpit deck the V56 keeps the same layout with a three double cabin lower deck, and the owners suite to fore.

INBUILD ~ Galeon 385 HT Part 3 of 7

For those attentive in our Inbuild section will remember that in part one of this series for the 385HT we showed you the tooling for the hull of this model. Now in part three pictured above is the just released 385 hull from the mould. This above is the second built which will also be a 385 HT model just as hull number one which was released a week before. In this picture we can see distinctive features which are becoming part of the Galeon latest generation models and obviously included into the 385 HT. For those that don't know, this feature is the sweeping window from fore to stern which makes part of all the new Tony Castro designed Galeon's released after the 640 Fly from 2008. More to come in part four very soon.

Another Blue Sea

Do not spread your imagination too far, as this title doesn't represent the finding of a new planet where may be in one thousand years from now, you can ship your boat or tow it to your space shuttle and navigate these newly found seas. Another Blue Sea is a very nice Italian website Altromareblu.com which centres around traditional motor boats. But the articles in this website are in actual fact much more to this.
Altromareblu does in fact feature articles by fourteen experienced nautical journalists and designers, of which also are legendary names as Renato "Sonny" Levi, and Franco Harrauer. These article impress how trough the Internet knowledge has become lazy, but has also reached endless learning. For example in this site I learned with much impress to myself that Renato Levi actually invented the deep Vee hull shape on the same year as Ray Hunt did in 1958. Another great story which I read about a year ago about the stern drive invention which involved figures as Jim Wynne, Carl Kiekhafer, and Charlie Strang, was that the Italian MTM in fact already had a similar technology in the thirties and was also used with good success by the Italians in the second World War. Cabi Cattaneo the inventor of such drive also used it on a racing Baglietto in 1936. But apparently Johnson also had a similar invention with photos to prove it in the thirties but abandoned the project because of the depression of the period.
Altromareblu also features very provocative articles as are translated from Italian; The New is Not Nice and the Nice is not New, and A Boat is Not a Car both written by the over half a century Italian boating journalist Antonio Soccol. These articles are both a provocation although to be honest what is written has to be taken with a pinch, but they do represent a consumer critic in the way boats are purchased. For example some facts how really boats in the shows have always the hull covered, and that the salesmen most of the times don't know the shape below the waterline and what this represents. Rock Around the States also by Soccol is another great line up of articles which involves the story of the people who made the difference on the other side of the Atlantic.
The only sad thing for this website is that it is only available in Italian, although Internet again can help here with tools as Google translation or similar.
