New Model: Horizon FD92

A new model has joined Horizon rapidly expanding Fast Displacement FD Series of high-volume, high-performance motor and super yachts. Recently launched, the brand new FD92 is the Series first ever tri-deck design, and features both an interior pilothouse and an open flybridge. The design was born out of an experienced owner’s request for a configuration change to the FD87 layout that would incorporate both a protected interior helm station and the option for al fresco navigation. Horizon’s engineers accommodated the request by designing a hull form that accommodated a lightweight carbon fiber flybridge without compromising performance. Perched atop the proven High-Performance Piercing Bow and hull design, the FD92 maintains a wide seven meters beam and the voluminous interior that defines the Cor D. Rover-designed FD Series. Maximizing all of the coveted features of the FD Series, such as a spacious interior and expansive windows, the new FD92 features a five-stateroom layout with an on-deck master, crew quarters and a beach club. The FD92’s tri-deck design allows for a helm, L-shaped seating, sunpad and a bar equipped with a fridge and icemaker to be positioned on the uppermost deck, which can be shaded with a bimini top. Another inviting exterior area has been designed for the foredeck, which features a six-person Jacuzzi, curved seating area, sun-pads, fridge/icemaker and plenty of storage. This area, too, can be protected with a custom fore-deck shade system. Aft of the enclosed skylounge which houses the helm station, lounge seating and a day-head the boat deck features a custom entertainment arrangement with a dinette and fully equipped bar. The tender is comfortably stowed furthest aft while underway and the entire area can be cooled by a custom shade system. Intended for entertaining, the aft deck has been designed to accommodate formal dining for ten with a wet bar on the starboard side and a large built-in sofa with storage aft. The superstructure design led to a proportionate hull modification giving this yacht an extended length augmenting the already spacious beach club and hi/lo swim platform and water sports area. Powered by twin Caterpillar engines of 1900hp each, this first FD92 will provide her owners with a smooth ride and island-friendly draft for cruising throughout the Caribbean and Bahamas.

Project: Solaris Power 44 Open

Solaris continue to extend the Power series with the project of the 44 Open set to launch in November 2020.  Designed as all the range by Brunello Acampora the Power 44 Open follows the family feeling as introduced with the 55/57 Lobster in early 2020, and then followed with the 48 Open a few months later.  The Solaris Power 44 Open is indeed a smaller sibling to the 48, with similar characteristics for a full walk around deck and entertainment area from bow to stern all revolving around the centre of the boat.  Below the Solaris is offered in two versions both sleeping four persons.  The standard layout A offers a forward double island berth, with two single berths at midships.  Layout B offers a V-shaped dinette forward, with a double french style berth at midships.  The Solaris Power 44 Open will be standard powered by twin Volvo 370hp with IPS pod propulsion, good for top speeds up to 33 knots. Optional engines are bigger Volvo 440hp or 480hp engines.

New Model: Rizzardi InFive

Following the success of the 2019 presented InSix, Rizzardi follow it fast with a smaller InFive model, a sport yacht of sixteen meters which features both comfortable accommodation and high performance as its main attraction, a trait which has always been synonymous with the South of Rome boat builder. The In series by Rizzardi is an evolution of the Incredible range which launched with the best selling 45 in 2004, and was followed with the 55, and 50.  Rizzardi is calling the new InFive the Rule Breaker, for its customisation options and high performance.  Choice and customisation have always been important for Rizzardi and InFive continues the tradition with a total of 95 variations possible.  The two important choices so far presented are two, that for an enclosed with patio door upper saloon, and that of two different available layouts below deck.  Both the lower deck layouts presented offer three cabins, with a version offering a second VIP double berth to port-side midships which also extends in size, and the third cabin becoming a single berth.  A crew cabin berth is located aft.  The Rizzardi InFive is powered by twin Man 800hp engines with Top System surface drives which will make her reach top speeds up to 44 knots.

Project: Absolute 50 Fly

Absolute present the project for a new 50 Fly, a model which stands rather close in between the 47 and 52 Fly model. The 50 Fly is similar to the 52 in form, function and layout with everything being that bit smaller, and comes from the brain storming of the Absolute Research Lab.  The 50 Fly offers three spacious cabins and two heads, plus one crew cabin aft accommodation layout. Owners room is a midships full beam affair, while forward we have one VIP suite, and a third guest cabin with two inline berths to starboard. The main deck will feature an L-shape stern galley layout, while the flybridge as in Absolute fashion is one of the most spacious in its size. The Absolute 50 Fly will be powered by twin Volvo 480hp engines located centrally but still with IPS pod drives as propulsion. Volvo IPS propulsion has been used in all the Absolute range since 2012, with the company starting with the technology on the 56 STC in 2006 in both double and triple power configurations.

New Model: Itama 62S

Ferretti Group give a little love to the Itama brand by presenting the new 62S. The Itama 62 was presented in 2011 as evolution of the FiftFive model which was launched in 2006. The S in the Itama 62 stands for the updated windshield which is now centrally opening and serves two functions. Function one will be that to allow more air circulation in the cockpit, second usage is that to serve as a passage to go on the fore-deck. Here the engineers build retractable steps and another step moulded forward. The opening windshield is not new in the Itama's as this detail was introduced by Mario Amati in the 46 model in 1995 and later on evolved in all the other models. The Amati version was not fully open and only served as a window to fresh the cockpit deck under way or on anchor.  Even though this was a simple gadget, everyone appreciated this detail, as it really made the cockpit deck fresh in Summer.  For example to this day I am still surprised how this solution is not used more in hard-top boats, which do become hot in the peak Summer season.  A couple hard-top boats did use this solution in the early 2000's as the Tiara Sovran and Cayman 43 WA models, but I am not aware of any particular new hard tops which have used it today or in the recent past.

Flybridge Cruiser on the Rocks in Favignana

A flybridge cruiser of about fourteen meters in length ended on the rocks in the Egadi island of Favignana, on the late morning of Sunday 20th September. The accident happened in Cala Previto on the South-West part. No injuries where reported with passengers being rescued by nearby boats, and the Piantoni flybridge boat was salvaged there after and led to safety. The accident is reported that the Piantoni flybridge cruiser was running when it hit an unmarked submerged reef, and then there after was beached in order to avoid total sinking.  One of three and the largest Egadi islands in the archipelago, located on the Western part of Sicily, Favignana is also the closest, distancing less to four nautical miles from the main land of the largest island in the Mediterranean.
The flybridge cruiser in this collision is a Piantoni 45 Fantasy, produced from 1985 till 1992.  The Piantoni 45 Fantasy evolved into the 48 Fly produced 1993 to 1995, with modified extended stern and a crew cabin aft.  Piantoni started life in the sixties founded by Pietro Piantoni and sons first building boats of wood, and then making the switch to fiberglass and went bankrupt in 1993.  Eventually the company opened again as Lombardi shipyard in 1999 with a life span which lasted some years.

New Model: Riviera 50 Sports Motor Yacht

On the Friday evening of September 4 Australia’s Riviera hosted a spectacular online launch for the world premiere of its new 50 Sports Motor Yacht.  The Riviera 50 Sports Motor Yacht is the latest addition to Riviera’s growing Sports Motor Yacht collection following the popular 64 Sports Motor Yacht which premiered in June this year.  For the well being of guests, dealer representatives and staff, Riviera unveiled online on all its platforms the new 50 SMY to a worldwide audience, live from its Gold Coast production facility.  Hosted by Riviera owner Rodney Longhurst, the live launch will be among the many highlights of the company’s forty years of evolution in 2020 that have driven the superior design and engineering refinements of today’s Riviera’s motor yachts.  The 50 SMY takes her cues from her highly acclaimed and popular sister ships the 72, 68 and 64 Sports Motor Yachts which are now cruising the waters of the world. The 50 is a spacious motor yacht with extensive water sports capabilities and designed for extended coastal passages or weekend escapes that can easily serve as a luxurious family, entertainer or adventure yacht.  The launch featured the very first reveal of the motor yacht followed by a tour of the 50 SMY. Part two of the premiere was streamed on Saturday, September 5, demonstrating the performance and sporting pedigree of this outstanding new model.  Accessed from a generous, optional hydraulic swim platform via dual transom doors, the rear cockpit boasts 6.5 square metres of outdoor living space and accommodates a barbecue/wet bar and fridge/freezer compartment, along with ample storage.  Wide and deep walk-around side-decks safely connect the fore-deck, which in turn offers both an entertainment and lounging zone and can transform to carry a tender. A walkway beneath the windscreen allows easy washing or attaching covers.  The bowsprit integrated into the flared hull enhances functionality and reflects a contemporary design.  In the fully covered alfresco deck are two comfortable day lounges either side – the starboard lounge can also convert to a sunbed. There is simply no better place to relax, enjoy a meal, take in the view or all the cockpit action.  Convenient access to the engine room is via a large hatch in the alfresco floor with a stainless-steel ladder beneath.  Joining the alfresco deck with the galley and saloon are a tinted glass sliding door and servery window set in a superior stainless-steel frame. A gourmet galley resides immediately to port, while the internal staircase to starboard, incorporating beneath a large freezer, liquor cabinet and glass storage.  As one of five luxury living zones, the saloon also offers two opposing lounge areas that can seat six to eight guests in total comfort.  4D Designs, in collaboration with the Riviera design team, has also excelled with the accommodation plan with a full-beam master suite bathed in natural light from large hull windows, a queen-sized island berth, chaise lounge, walk-in robe and ensuite. Guests are afforded a VIP stateroom with ensuite/day head forward and twin bunk cabin, all in exceptional luxury.  The three-sided enclosed flybridge offers superb all-round visibility and indulges its occupants in complete comfort. There is a supremely comfortable lounge opposite the main helm to starboard, perfect to stretch out, relax and chat to the skipper whilst underway. With an extended awning, the Flybridge is open at the rear and strata glass clears can then fully seal this area. An optional aft helm is available for convenience when fishing or docking.  The main helm station offers twin pedestal-mounted leather seats and places controls, screens and switches close to hand and in clear view.  From here, the captain can command the choice of two highly efficient power and drive options, being twin diesel Volvo 725hp, or Man 800hp.   With Man 800hp the Riviera 50 Sports Motor Yacht delivers over 30 knots at wide open throttle, and  has a range of 336nm at 22 knots with 10 per cent reserve fuel.  The official launch of the 50 Sports Motor Yacht will be followed by her world premiere tour which will include Australia and the United States. Project: Cranchi A42

Since launching the Sessantotto 24 meter flagship earlier this year, Cranchi has found new fresh energy for innovative design which go out of the spectrum it got us used in the last forty years.  That is not to say this is something new for Cranchi, as for example the company was faster then most to enter the explorer segment with the Trawler line in 2013, and the T36 Crossover is another unique product in the boating World.  Designed as all latest models by Christian Grande with the A42 Luxury Tender, Cranchi is following the pack in the rise of the walk around day cruiser.  The A42 offers full exterior deck use from bow to stern, while below it offers a four berth accommodation; convertible dinette and large cabin, with a spacious head featuring a shower stall.  The Cranchi A42 shall be powered by twin Volvo with pod drives, no engine data is given but I imagine it will be the new pumped up Volvo 480hp.  Due to the success of this kind of boat in the North American market Cranchi has declared that they are working on an outboard version, surely with three possibly optional four engines.  World launch is set for early 2021 in Dusseldorf.

New Launch: Benetti 107.6 meter FB272

Benetti FB272 M/Y Luminosity is not an ordinary super yacht. The most advanced technology ever seen in the yacht industry matches the most pleasing results. Diesel-electric power, Azipod propulsion and advanced high-tech battery technology for covering 8,000 nm at 10 knots reveal a truly hybrid world cruiser. A floating dream not over yet. Her pioneering spirit is always monitoring the development of the future improvements and opportunities. The engine room is an impressive example of advanced technology. An advanced system for the minimum level of vibration and noises. A 3 megawatt/h Lithium Polymer battery bank for 12 hours of power with switched-off generators and no emissions. The Power Management System assures the best use of every ounce of energy. Appliances and systems on board operate with the maximum efficiency anywhere in the world. From an unrivalled audio-video system to a cutting-edge super-fast connection never used before on a yacht of this size and fingerprint recognition systems to access the more private areas. Preventive measures ensure safety in any situation. From sand filters and retractable stabilizer fins to a medical centre with an air sanitation system. So much more than just a practical purpose. Energy and technology bring to life some modern works of art on board. Over 370 meters of interactive panels show powerful images of nature letting them come alive and the 264 white magnolia flowers on the Main Saloon wall, silently open and close as a person passes through, miming the ever-evolving perfection of Nature.  FB272 embraces art in an extraordinary way. Beauty in its purest form blends with comfort and onboard needs. Every single detail tells a story. Every creation evokes masterpieces of artists who have left a mark on the history of art. Damien Hirst’s famous coloured circles find new expression on the French limestone floor in the Main Deck Lobby. As for Man Ray, an extraordinary eye-shaped construction at the base of the 18-meter-high stairwell winks at his magnificent work. The hymn to life of Matisse’s collages inspires the intriguing shapes throughout the yacht’s Main Saloon and Lounge. Among them, a sinuous configuration of hand-forged steel polished to a mirror that encloses a thousand Bohemian crystal bulbs illuminates the main lounge.  Other enchanting stories adorn this space: the beginning of Melville’s Moby Dick is gently engraved on the crafted pillars. The adventures of the world’s great sea faring explorers enrich the refined Portuguese Majolica tiles by Boca do Lobo on the cabinetry. An ensemble of highly polished concave and convex dishes flood the Master Deck Office with light. A great tribute to the Indian sculptor Anish Kapoor. Another eyecatcher on this deck is the Master Stateroom full custom Culligan hydromassage, crafted from one single block of the same marble used by Michelangelo to sculpt his outstanding David in Florence. The changing lunar phases in a single piece of Iranian onyx cut with surgical precision. A dreamy Moon Light shines upon the Upper Deck VIP suite. Endless details catch the eye without having to compete for the attention.

Improve-It = Otam 65 HT

The second of three new Otam's for 2020, this unique 65 HT has been delivered. The iconic exterior has been adapted to meet the specific demands of a deeply passionate and brave owner, driven by the desire to create a brand new design, a true one-off in Otam style. At the customer’s request, the Francesco Guida Design firm designed the styling and details of the internal layout and of the external cockpit, giving the yacht even more personality and translating the specific requests of the customer with a high attention to detail.  The interiors have been inspired to that of a private with raw carbon being visible in some areas to underline the performance aspect of the sport yacht.  This Otam 65 HT also sets itself apart from previous 65 units for having extensive use of carbon fibre in the build process, and also for being equipped with twin 2000hp MTU engines.  These engines set a new record for Otam's 65th anniversary, making it the fastest build ever by reaching top speeds up to sixty knots and a cruise of fifty knots.  Considering that most Otams reach fifty knots max this is a huge achievement and may 65 feet plus 65 years does indeed equal sixty knots.

New Model: Uniesse Exuma HTC5

When speaking of the just launched Uniesse Exuma HTC5 we have to look back at the past.  Uniesse always got me excited, for two reasons, because it managed to marry a sportfishing design with that of the Mediterranean cruiser in looks and purpose.  The Uniesse 48 and 57 Opens, launched in 96 and 97 respectively married this concept to perfection, and where a huge success from the end nineties till the first decade of the first millennium for the North Italian boat builder.  The Uniesse Exuma Hard-Top Coupe HTC5 is the evolution of the 48, re-imagined for the future.  We have two important changes in  the first HTC5 which launched this Summer, and that is a fully enclosed hard-top with patio door, and the profile window on the hull, stretching the whole cabin area, with added port holes on the fore deck.  The interior of the Exuma HTC5 is a two cabin two heads layout with forward owners stateroom, and a guest cabin with two in line berths to port side.  To starboard is a galley and an L-shaped dinette in standard version, with an option existing to have a large gourmet size kitchen.  The Uniesse Exuma HTC5 is available in five engine choices from Cummins 600hp up to Man 800hp, with standard propulsion being line shaft and IPS pod drives coming with the Volvo engines.  Hull one of the Exuma HTC5 is currently on its way to the USA and should be presented Covid-19 permitting at the 2020 Fort Lauderdale boat show at the end of October.  The Exuma HTC5 is Uniesse second new model after the company launched the SS 6, presented as 56 SS two years ago in the Summer of 2018.

Sport Cruiser Runs Aground in Kingsville

A nine meter sport cruiser with three people onboard started sinking in Lake Erie, near Kingsville, Ontario, on Sunday sixth September 2020.  The sport cruiser was cruising from Put-in-Bay to Vermillion, Ohio when into it's trip and running about two hundred meters offshore was pushed aground, and later partly sank, listing to its starboard side.  A call for assistance was made but the Coast Guard could not find the vessel with ultimately being the Kingsville Fire Department who rescued the occupants, with two of them needing treatment for undisclosed injuries.  The cause of the grounding are not reported with the boat being salvaged on Monday seventh September.
The boat in this grounding is a Canadian build Doral Prestancia 32 as produced from 2006 to 2012.  The Prestancia 32 followed leaner and sportier lines the Canadian boat builder started to introduce in the noughties.  The Prestancia 32 came out as an evolution of the Prestancia 28, and ceased production when Doral went out of business in 2012.

Project: X-Power 33C

Some things you think of never seeing in a life time, and this is one of them, X-Yachts making a motor boat.  The tell signals showed when the Danish yacht builder acquired HOC Yachts in 2019, and indeed the X-Yachts 33C is moulded from the HOC Cruiser 33.  Onward with some bits from the official press release. With more than forty years of experience in high performance sailing boats, X-Yachts is now introducing a new initiative, based on some of the experience they have, a ten meter open powerboat sport cruiser for quality-conscious boaters, with exactly the same overall strategy. Fast and safe on the water, superior pleasure with ownership, innovative development and design. The powerboat is planned for launch in January 2021, and the important milestones are reached by close supervision of designers, boat builders, engineers and technicians.  X-Yachts celebrated their forty years anniversary in 2019, and one of the anniversary presents was the chance offered, also to start-up powerboat production.  X-Yachts is confident that the new powerboat range will seem like a gift for the discerning sailor. The first model the 33C is produced with an inboard engine, a patented Petestep® designed hull making the driving experience smooth and elegant. X-Yachts is promising that the operation will be an intuitive experience, eliminating the need for a user manual, enabling everyone to run the boat feeling fully secure. The driving panel will be a light experience with integrated navigation and operation system.  The first X-Power model will be launched in January 2021, the second being a closed model is planned for launch in September 2021, and finally for now, the yard has planned yet another X-Power launch in January 2023.  The X-Power 33C will be powered by a single Yanmar engine from 320hp, and two other more powerful choices of 350hp and 370hp.  Propulsion will be line shaft, and so far the let down especially for a company which does blue water cruising sailing yachts is the CE C design category, meaning coastal waters, rivers and lakes.

New Launch: Rossinavi 49.70m FR038

Italian shipyard Rossinavi is proud to announce the delivery, after two years under construction, of the 49.70m M/Y Lel. Developed by Kurt Lehmann, Chairman of Yacht Moments, this new Rossinavi fifty meter is the perfect balance between sporty exterior lines and contemporary interiors. Designed by renowned design firm Luca Dini Design and Architecture, which was responsible for both the exterior and interior styling, a first collaboration between Rossinavi and the Florence-based studio. Completely built in aluminium, the new Rossinavi is a celebration of fluid forms, thanks to a dynamic silhouette that harmonically culminate into both decks and hull. The generous size of the main common areas makes her one of a kind in the segment of superyachts with similar gross tonnage, giving her a substantial competitive advantage.  The Rossinavi 50m boasts a rather large beach club that allows for a dynamic and natural interaction with the surrounding environment. When the side and stern doors are lowered, interiors and exteriors organically merge into one vast and comfortable entertaining space featuring an indoor bar area where the tender can also be accommodated. The beach club is therefore an adjustable area of the yacht also including a garage which can be isolated and managed separately by closing the automatic door on the staircase that leads to the main deck. Here, the cockpit provides a double usage thanks to its raised panoramic area that overlooks the second bar ensuring maximum privacy without sacrificing entertainment space when the staircase is closed off. The upper deck features a tranquil dining area which can be transformed into a private and protected environment with a removable veranda. This innovation features outdoor heating lights and a room air conditioning system which allows for the boat to be enjoyed throughout the year and in different weather conditions. At the top is the sundeck fitted with sunbathing and relax areas by the pool pointing towards horizon and equipped with a dedicated bar station.  Indoor, the main saloon features refined luxury interiors, which combine a contemporary design furniture, elegant textiles, precious leathers and bespoke finishes for a tactile perception of timeless elegance. The owner’s suite is located forward on the main deck and is of generous size. In order to increase the comfort of this area, a large walk-in-closet has been installed and the cabin also features a private balcony directly suspended on the sea. Adjacent to this suite is located a VIP stateroom. On the lower deck, four guest cabins are all well-equipped with the latest comforts and merry the character. This new Rossinavi 50m  is powered by two MTU 3459hp diesel engines, which give her a top speed of 25 knots and a cruise of 21.

Sport Cruiser on the Rocks in Malta

In the morning of fourth September 2020, at Bahar ic-Caghaq located in the North West coast of Malta found itself in the same position it did in 20th June.  Following over night and morning North East strong winds a sport cruiser of about eight meters in length broke its swing mooring and finished on the rocks. This part of the island is open to the Easterly winds which do become more common and strong in September and the Autumn period on the island.  Other smaller boats where involved in similar incidents around the Northern part of the Maltese island, while a Bavaria sailing yacht of about twelve meters in length also finish grounded in sand at Mellieha bay.

Classic Chris Craft Destroyed by Fire in Lake St. Clair

No one was injured as a classic Chris Craft yacht of sixteen meters in length with three persons onboard went ablaze near Port Lambton, on Lake St. Clair on the afternoon of Thursday third September. The classic yacht broke its mooring with the fire and ended in Canadian territory, and struck a small docked cuddy cruiser and a jet ski. St. Clair Township firefighters, Lambton County paramedics, the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre and the Canadian Border Service Agency responded to the fire, along with Lambton OPP officers. Ontario Ministry of Environment officials also arrived to monitor the clean-up, police said. The three boaters who were reported uninjured returned to American territory by the US Coast Guard as the cause of the fire was not reported.
The classic Chris Craft in this fire is a 57 Constellation as produced in wood from 1963 to 1972 in 262 hulls.  The last 57 Constellation delivered was also the last wooden build made by Chris Craft.  The 57 Constellation was a replacement to the 55 Constellation and was replaced by the Chris Craft 58 Roamer Riviera.
