New Launch: Heesen 80m YN 19480

In late 2021 Heesen launched YN 19480, Project Cosmos at the shipyard in Oss, its new eighty meter custom build flagship which is to be christened Galactica. At 80 metres, with a gross tonnage of 1,700GT and a top speed of almost 30 knots, she is the biggest and fastest all-aluminium yacht ever built. The challenges involved in creating such a large and complex yacht are extreme, but made a perfect fit with Heesen’s history and expertise. Precision aluminium construction, high performance and the finest Dutch craftsmanship are steeped into the DNA of this shipyard. Cosmos is the ultimate expression of Heesen’s ability to build daring projects that stretch the imagination of its engineers and crafts people. Thanks to the dedication of the Heesen teams and the shipyard’s loyal subcontractors, who all worked tirelessly through the pandemic, the yacht was launched on schedule in perfect Dutch style. What makes Project Cosmos so impressive is its immense size combined with a remarkable top speed of almost 30 knots. This is achieved thanks to the lightweight and low-drag hull design, honed to perfection by Heesen’s naval architects on an iteration of the Fast Displacement Hull Form devised by van Oossanen, and assembled, millimetre-perfect, by Heesen’s welders. Ensuring sufficient longitudinal strength was one of the biggest technological challenges facing Heesen’s engineering team, who designed and patented the Backbone,  an intricate full-length structural reinforcement system. Power comes from traditional, if highly refined, diesel propulsion of four MTU 4830hp  engines, two gearboxes, variable-pitch propellers and ultra-innovative Promas rudders. Cosmos’s elegant exterior comes from the renowned British studio of Winch Design. Clean lines, a sporty silhouette and the extensive use of glass create a timeless, dynamic profile, which will look as good in twenty years as it does today at launch. Sinot is responsible for the light and soothing interior design that makes guests feel at home from the moment they step aboard. While the overall palette is neutral, splashes of a range of blue hues are infused into the design throughout. The piece de rĂ©sistance is undoubtedly the beach club, with its side and stern platforms. The backlit onyx bar with centrally positioned seating is the focal point of this ample and airy space close to the water. With the size, weight and performance of Project Cosmos so intimately connected, Sinot collaborated closely with Heesen’s in-house engineers to ensure that their stringent weight calculations were always met. Following her launch, Project Cosmos remained at Heesen for commissioning before undergoing intense sea trials in the North Sea commencing in February. She was delivered to her owners in Spring 2022 but no pictures have appeared as yet of the new Heesen eight meter flagship in navigation.

Project: Sanlorenzo SD90

Sanlorenzo present the project of the SD90, a new entry level model in its traditional ship looking semi displacement range which was announced during the Venice boat show in May 2022. Sanlorenzo SD range launched in 2007 with the SD92, and since then it has never looked back, a success from the start with the first model selling 24 units.  Designed by Zuccon, with Phillipe Briand doing hull engineering, the SD90 will offer an accommodation layout sleeping eight in four cabins, with an owners stateroom located on the main deck.  The Sanlorenzo SD90 will offer a full beam wide body forward area for an owners stateroom on the main deck, which integrates well into the design of the yacht.  There is a certain equilibrium with the SD90 all looking very traditional and yet when one puts all together it all comes down to a modern yacht.  There is also a huge research in recyclable materials used in hull number one, which along with a hybrid electric propulsion by Siemens, this optional version marked /s makes it as one of the most ecological yachts in its size.  The Sanlorenzo SD90 is standard powered by twin Man 800hp or optional Cats 1150hp engines with speeds expected to reach seventeen knots.  The SD90/s Siemens hybrid version will cruise at six knots in electric only mode, and ten knots in hybrid.

Project: Azimut S7

Azimut present the project for a new S7, which has now received the Alberto Mancini exterior looks treatment looking more a sibling albeit smaller to the larger S8 and S10 models.  Launched in 2017 the original S7 was designed by 1992-2018 Azimut lead designer Stefano Righini to huge success.  The mark II or Mancini version builds on the same Ausonio designed hull form, with some little changes to the layout plan.  The changes is in some details; the fore deck lounge area for example has minor design tweaks which is now more rounded and open, while the master stateroom queen berth is looking to port side bulkhead instead of an angle as it was before, and now features a large sofa to starboard opposite.  Other detail changes are the garage which is now that bit larger with the same length, not shorter to the jet-bike side.  These changes have added an extra weight of about 2500 kilograms in loaded mode, now weighing 46 ton versus the 43.5 of the Righini version but performance has not changed according to Azimut with the three Volvo 800hp and IPS pod drives still giving a declared 35 knots of top speed.

Project: Franchini 70 Noah

Franchini continued its course in 2019 with the Mia 63 an eighteen meter sport yacht platform offered in the T-Top and Sport-Fly versions coupled to aggressive lines, clean surfaces and high performance typical of  Mediterranean yachts.  Now Franchini presents the Noah 70 project, an evolution in some aspects of the Mia but a flybridge motor yacht aimed at those who look far away and want to experience the sea without limits: a yacht for long journeys! The definitions for this kind of yachts are endless today: Long Range; Blue Water; Shuttle; Explorer. Franchini does not like labels and is offering the Noah with the tradition of sea qualities, and evolution in comfort of recent years. With this approach Franchini in its seventy years of history made up of work, passion and research, have designed and built over four hundred boats, all still sailing. The same principles gave life to the Noah 70, for which, at the basis of the creative process, is the idea of navigation that favors the breadth of the horizon over the narrowness of time, the pleasure of travel over the urgency of the goal. It starts from a 20-meter hull, 22 in over-all length, capable of accommodating up to five double cabins with relative bathrooms and an infinite number of stowage and service spaces. This customization comes from simple and yet effective engineering, based on a structural cage where the transverse bulkheads make a fundamental contribution to the overall rigidity and, consequently, contribute to the solidity of the hull and it's own weight reduction. This fact, combined with the perfect weight distribution on board, significantly improves stability, safety and navigation comfort. Naturally the Noah 70 is equipped with engines suitable for the intended range of use which ranges from Volvo IPS pod drives propulsion, or to the more traditional line shaft with the essential aim of favoring reliability and autonomy over extreme performance.

Another important feature of the wallywhy150 can be found on the main deck aft, where the full-beam interior saloon is on the same level as the cockpit down to sea level, creating a close sense of connection with the water. Many of the standout design features introduced on the WallyWhy200 have also been applied to this new model. These include her full wrap-around glass on the main deck, with the high bow presenting a 270-degree view from the unique forward master cabin. First premiered to the world on board the wallywhy200, Why150 will be the first 24 meter yacht in its size range to exhibit this feature. In addition, the WallyWhy150 offers unparalleled levels of headroom in the saloon. Sporting a curved ceiling, the living area has the highest headroom in her class, reaching heights up to 2.5 metres. A versatile yacht ideal for families, couples or charter guests, onboard accommodation is for eight guests across four generous staterooms, with four crew members also housed in two large cabins. With her optional three Volvo 1000hp and IPS propulsion, the Why150 can reach a maximum speed of 23 knots, or 21 knots with the standard power of three Volvo 900hp. Set to make her world debut in Spring 2023, the first unit of the WallyWhy150 will be launched in February.

New Model: Horizon FD110 Tri-deck

Horizon Yachts is pleased to announce that the first tri-deck FD110 has launched and has made her U.S. debut. The new FD110 is the largest build to date from the Cor D. Rover-designed Fast Displacement FD Series that has become renowned for its pioneering high-volume interior and unrivaled stability and performance. The Series characteristic full-height windows running from bow to stern punctuate the exterior styling of the tri-deck yacht, whose striking presence is further amplified by its elongated exterior deck areas. Guests of the yacht are welcomed via Besenzoni passerelle to the aft deck that spans the yacht’s beam and conveys a presence indicative of a much larger build. A spacious seating area here with both fixed and loose furniture is served by a full bar with two bar stools to starboard. A Hi/Lo extendable table allows for the space to convert into a dining area protected with a sun shade aft. Entertainment and relaxation are the emphasis of the FD110’s design, and through the fully opening salon doors, the main salon provides a voluminous oasis where a large L-shaped seating area invite conversation and enjoyment of the views through the large windows. A conveniently situated day head services both the interior and exterior on this deck, and a convertible dining table serves a multifunctional role as both a breakfast bar and a formal interior dining table. Sliding glass doors provide an al fresco feel to the dining area, and sculptural overhead lighting by Italian firm Slamp punctuates the rich, sophisticated interior dĂ©cor highlighted by washed wenge wood with dark oak and walnut accents. Forward, a fully-equipped professional galley gleaming with beautiful Cambria stone can be open or completely closed off from the guest areas for privacy. Drawing its inspiration for the luxurious interior from trending residential design, the style throughout emphasizes natural finishes, subtle coloring and clean, modern elements. Stained walnut mimics the coziness of aged wood, while muted lacquer in French grey lightens up the tone overall. Polished chrome accents and splashes of lively colors round out a design that is both warm and elegant. One of the signature design features of the FD Series is the on-deck master stateroom, and that aboard the new FD110 does not disappoint. Expansive views from the large windows to port and starboard surround the king-sized bed, and a spacious his-and-hers ensuite with a grand shower is positioned forward. On the lower deck, four further ensuite staterooms comprise two mirrored VIPs amidships, a convertible twin to port and a third VIP in the bow. A spacious dedicated laundry room conveniently serves this area. Aft, the air-conditioned engine room houses the yacht’s machinery and twin Cat 1900hp engines. Crew quarters for up to six are situated furthest aft and include a double Captain’s cabin and crew mess. A large storage locker features a hydraulic door that accesses the yacht’s full-beam Hi/Lo swim platform. An internal stairway conveniently links the crew area with the aft deck above. Thoughtfully designed for entertainment and relaxation, the FD110 offers enviable areas for both on the bridge and upper decks. The enclosed skylounge offers plentiful seating as well as a wet bar with a wine cooler and a day-head aft. Equipped with custom Garmin navigation equipment and twin helm chairs, the forward wheelhouse features a Hi/Lo window and door, allowing the space to be open to or closed off from the skylounge as desired. Twin wing stations assist in docking and the yacht’s walkaround side decks lead to the forward entertainment area and boat deck aft.

Sport Cruiser Beached and Destroyed in Fire Island

A twelve meter sport cruiser was beached in Great South Bay, Old Inlet, Fire Island, on the evening of eight September.  Reports are saying the sport cruiser was just repowered and on a trip from Freeport to Montauk, before the captain noticed he was taking on water and seeing a breach in the hull decided to beach the sport cruiser.  Unfortunately with the ocean being rough on the day and breaking waves hitting the sport cruiser, it received destructive damage.  Fortunately no environmental hazard was made as Park Rangers pumped out the diesel from the boat on tenth September.
The sport cruiser in this beaching is a Trojan 12 Meter Express as designed by Lancaster and produced from 1987 to 1993 . The Trojan 12 Meter Express also featured the patented Delta Conic hull.  The 12 meter Express was replaced by the Fulvio de Simoni designed Trojan 440 in 1994.

Project: Posillipo Technema 90

Posillipo is back and present the project for a new Technema 90 model. This is an evolution of the Technema 90 released in 2009, designed by Carlo Galeazzi and reportedly sold in two units in 2009.  The new Technema 90 is added with a new integrated open hard-top over the flybridge, while the view windows in the saloon become larger.  Hull windows have also been added, replacing the traditional port holes of the previous model.  Details are not yet communicated for the accommodation layouts or performance, but the 2009 Technema 90 had an accommodation for eight guests in four cabins plus two crew cabins.

Gouvia Marina Fire Destroys Four Yachts

Four yachts where destroyed on the North looking Pontoon P in Gouvia marina in Corfu, in a fire which started around 16:00 hours of Wednesday seventh September.  The fire first started on a twenty meter Princess sport yacht, which then jumped to a sailing catamaran of about sixteen meter, then another catamaran, and lastly the classic 29 meter sailing yacht Halcyon.  An explosion from the Princess twenty meter sport yacht was reported as being heard before a huge plump of smoke was seen coming up.  Nineteen fire fighters, five fire engines and a fire fighting boat where involved in the containment and control of the fire, along with volunteers who where untying and towing away nearby yachts.  Luckily no one was injured in this fire, which was rather extensive, in one of the largest Greek yacht marinas, with the four yachts being totalled and mostly a wreck.
The Princess yacht which started the fire is a V65 as designed by Bernard Olesinski and produced from 2000 to 2004 in about fifty units.  The Princess V65 mark. I was replaced by the V65 mark. II.
S/y Halcyon is a classic 29 meter schooner build in 1929 as a commercial vessel by Vosper Thornycroft, turned into a yacht school in 1957 and kept in this use for 32 years.  In 1988 she started its yacht conversion, which was finalized in 2004.

Project: Lyman-Morse Hood 35 Flybridge

Following the successful launch of the hardtop express Hood 35 by Lyman-Morse, construction of the flybridge version is now underway at the company’s facility in Thomaston, Maine. The anticipated launch date is the spring of 2023.  The Hood 35 series delivers the best of a semi-custom platform, allowing for reduced build time and efficiencies. Yet customers can still enjoy Lyman-Morse’s world-renowned customization to ensure their 35 is built to suit their specific needs. This hybrid approach is a rare offering in yachts with a length overall of less than 40 feet.  The benefits of this approach are evident when comparing and contrasting the first two 35s. For example, hull No. 2 with the flybridge features an enclosed aft bulkhead and places the galley-up to allow for additional accommodations belowdecks. In contrast, hull No. 1 is open from the helm area to the cockpit with the galley below. Both choices include a spacious head with shower. The owners of hull No. 2 also selected a Seakeeper gyro stabilizer system, air conditioning, and a generator for extended cruising.  This flexibility extends to the available power options. C.W. Hood and Lyman-Morse offer three different engine options. Hull No. 1 is powered by twin Yanmar 440hp coupled to a pair of Hamilton Waterjet achieving speeds of more than forty knots. The new flybridge model will be equipped with twin Volvo Penta 440hp driving stern drives and providing an estimated top speed of 40-plus knots with an expected cruising speed around 30-plus knots. A twin outboard version is also available.  Another noteworthy element of the new flybridge model is its fluid, seamless profile, compared to other mid-size bridge models. The new flybridge design profile is purposeful as well as extremely functional with bench seating for two to three persons and a centerline upper helm station. The carbon-fiber flybridge and deck keep the center of gravity low and optimize the yacht’s strength while reducing weight overall.
