Vale Blanche Cook 1961 - 2019

It is with the greatest sadness that Yachting Developments announce the passing of Blanche Cook, Financial Director and part-owner of Yachting Developments, wife of Ian and mother of Bianca and Paige. Blanche passed peacefully on 28 March 2019 after a brave battle with cancer. Blanche was an integral member of the Yachting Developments family. Owner, mentor, mother-figure and friend, her larger-than-life presence pervaded the entire yard. Born and raised in Auckland, New Zealand, Blanche worked side by side with Ian to build Yachting Developments into an internationally respected and award-winning operation. She was heavily involved in New Zealand’s marine community, serving as Vice Chairperson of the NZ Marine export group, supporting the yard’s busy apprenticeship scheme and providing her support to a wide range of yachting causes, particularly the rescue and restoration of numerous classic yachts. Blanche was a passionate supporter of all the Yachting Developments team, and was so proud of all projects completed by the yard. Together, Blanche and Ian led the Yachting Developments team to build, refit and restore a roll call of beautiful yachts. Blanche will be deeply missed by her family, friends and all the Yachting Developments team.

New Model: Custom Line 106

On Thursday 7 March 2019 the second member of the new planing range by Francesco Paszkowski Design, the Ferretti Custom Line 106 took to the water at the Ferretti Group Superyacht Yard in Ancona: a world-class facility where all Custom Line production processes take place.  The Custom Line 106 stems from the partnership between the Francesco Paszkowski Design studio, the Ferretti Group Engineering Department and the Product Strategy Committee led by the engineer Piero Ferrari. It embodies a new horizon in perfection, with meticulously clean-cut lines and large spaces steeped in simple sophistication, offering unparalleled comfort for the owner.  The design of the lines on the bottom and the hull helps it to replicate and build on the outstanding hydrodynamic performance of the latest models in the brand’s planing range.  A minimalist design spans the interior and exterior, while the surfaces merge into each other in a display of architectural balance that breaks down the boundaries between the spaces.  The large, interconnected floor surfaces which total 220 squared meters are another distinguishing feature of the Custom Line 106. The entire interior design scheme in this first unit has been customized to cater perfectly to the requirements of the owner, in accordance with Custom Line’s famous tailor-made style.  The interiors of the main deck are bathed in natural light thanks to the large, full-height windows. The full-beam master cabin is in the fore-deck and there are four standard cabins on the lower deck: two VIP cabins amidships and two twin ones forward, all with separate bathrooms.  The Ferretti Custom Line 106 is standard powered by twin MYU 2217hp or optional 2638hp engines.  The Custom Line 106 will be unveiled for the first time in June during the Venice Boat Show, at an exclusive event for a select group of owners. The official presentation will take place in September, at the Cannes Yachting Festival.

Project: ISA Yachts Gran Turismo 45 meters

ISA Yachts, a brand of Palumbo Superyachts, is pleased to announce the sale of a new 45-meter superyacht from the GT Gran Turismo series.  This new construction represents a new era for the Gran Turismo line of the Ancona shipyard, which became famous following the delivery of the 66-meter and 43-meters models.  Designed by Enrico Gobbi for the exterior design and Luca Dini for the interior, this project with steel hull and aluminum superstructure combines style, sportiness and dynamism.  ISA GT 45 is already under construction at the Ancona shipyard of Palumbo Superyachts and will be delivered to its owner in summer 2020.  For her exterior profile, Enrico Gobbi has revisited some of ISA Yachts characteristics such as the pronounced external arches connecting the hull to the superstructure and enriched with distinctive sports cars features such as the fancy air intakes.  The silhouette is slender, with strong and flowing lines.  The volume of the superstructure has been deliberately concentrated astern in keeping with the proportions typical of a sports coupè car.  Despite its slender exterior lines, ISA GT 45’s interior space is impressively roomy so to easily accommodate eight guests in four large cabins and a luxurious full-beam master suite with balcony and private direct access to the bow sunbathing area.  The large-size windows run along the profile, providing the master cabin and the main salon with breathtaking views.  ISA GT 45 accommodates a crew of up to seven and provides a range of 3500 nautical miles at a speed of twelve knots.  Among her most individual features, in the aft section are worth mentioning the largest swimming pool ever seen on a yacht of this length and the beach club/ gym with glass doors at sea level.  The interior style by Luca Dini is contemporary, a fair balance between precious and natural materials with the addition of some “high-tech” elements such as carbon mainly used to make the bespoke furniture assign timeless elegance and precious emotions to the superyacht.

Project: Monte Carlo MCY 76

It was 2010 and after some years of speculation and an announcement, Beneteau moved forward with its upmarket line of Monte Carlo Yachts.  The first of that new line to be designed, so far in its entirety by Italian designers Nuvolari Lenard was the MCY 76.  Nearly nine years has passed and the MCY 76 enters its renewal phase and here Monte Carlo Yachts presents its third new model for the 2019 season.  The MCY 76 builds on the lines of the previous model softening them in some areas, adding windows in others.  The result from the rendering above shows more aggressive looks.  The MCY 76 will offer four double guest cabins, plus two crew crew cabins located in between the engine room and the midships master stateroom.  Power for the new MCY 76 will come from standard Man 1400hp or optional 1550hp engines with speeds going up to thirty knots with the large engine option.

New Model: Invictus CX250

Invictus presents the new CX250 a sterndrive day boat sport cruiser designed by Christian Grande and able to offer comfortable living space in only just over seven meters of length. The new Invictus CX250 comes in a perfect place as an ideal alternative between the CX240 and the CX280. In common with the other CX range models, this mini sport cruiser was conceived to concentrate lots of equipment with high level comfort and encase them all in a little space. The choice of a stern-drive, with a hull especially designed for it, allows for a spacious stern platform that excels in comfort while at anchor and at the same time makes it easy to come aboard from the dock. The reclining L-shaped settee extends the sun bathing zone towards the cockpit. The vertical control console is located central of the boat, while behind it is the living zone set amidships, and easily transformable to complete the stern dinette and giving another seat to those who love to enjoy their boat with friends. Protection from the midday sun comes from the retractable awning that opens over the entire living area.  Below deck we have an open space with double Vee berth, a corner washroom featuring a cabinet that holds the toilet when not needed, while a very roomy cabinet to the left of the stairs guarantees ample storage space. These are all featured in a luminous ambient, thanks to two wide side windows that increase the perceptions coming from the outside and reduce the effect of the hull as an architectural barrier. You must not be distracted by the beauty of the finishing and fine detailing from the noteworthy sea-keeping qualities of the hull, always easily driven and smooth riding even in rough water. The Invictus CX250 is powered by a single 250hp engine with stern drive propulsion which allows top speeds of 36 knots, and a comfortable cruising speed of 25 knots.

New Model: Pershing 140

The wait is over: the first aluminium super sport yacht by Pershing has hit the water at Ancona's Super Yacht Yard on 23 February.  Ever a pioneer in terms of visionary design, technological innovation and nautical trend-setting, Pershing has just ushered in a new era in its celebrated history of yacht-building excellence. The milestone moment took place in Ancona, which witnessed the launch of the first unit of Pershing 140, the brand's new flagship and the first aluminium superyacht made by Pershing.  Born from a collaboration between architect Fulvio De Simoni, the Ferretti Group Product Strategy Committee led by engineer Piero Ferrari, and the Group's Engineering Department, the new 140-footer is the first Pershing to be produced at the Ancona Superyacht Yard, a Ferretti Group facility specialized in building super and mega yachts above 40 metres, in both steel or aluminium.  Its aggressive profile blends novel design elements with iconic details that reveal a continuity with the most recent models, such as the two lateral wings integrated into the superstructure and connected to the gunwale at the start of the walkways.  Even before unleashing its power on the waves, the new Pershing 140 stands out for the innovative layout of the aft area, which features a raised cockpit that effectively becomes a mezzanine level: this creates a vast sea-facing space that rises from the water up to the sun deck, joining together the yacht's entire aft section. The forward area too offers roomy and innovative relaxation spaces, while the upper deck – seamlessly integrated into the general profile – is a spacious panoramic terrace that may be entirely furnished with free-standing pieces.  The main deck includes a lounge with bar and dining area as well as an ample private entertainment area. Below decks, finally, are four suites designed for privacy and comfort, including two VIPs with king-size bed and two twins with single beds.  The superyacht will then head for Hong Kong, its final destination, and will be officially presented to the public in the coming months.

Project: Alia 16m Fast Runabout

Best known for its custom super yachts such as 60m Samurai, 41m Ruya and 31m Virgen del Mar, in 2014 Alia Yachts received an inquiry from a private customer looking to build a fast day boat that he couldn’t find among existing production models. Instead, Çelik approached Bill Dixon Design in the U.K., which has a strong track record in the powerboat sector, to develop the naval architecture, exterior and interior design together with Alia Yachts. In addition to the galley and bar unit behind the pilots seats and comfy dinette, the stylish day boat has unparalleled outdoor spaces, ample sunbathing space both fore and aft, a spacious double cabin below deck with en-suite bathroom and shower, and a second galley with sink and fridge. Powered by twin Volvo engines with IPS pod drives, the boat has a top speed of 35 plus knots, and up to forty knots with bigger engine alternatives offered. Alia Yachts took care to build the boat with the same attention to detail lavished on its super yachts. The original client was delighted with the result and two more were sold in quick succession, although the product has never been properly marketed as the shipyard continues to focus on its super yacht projects. That now looks set to change as Alia Yachts is currently in discussions with an American client for a fourth unit and fielding other enquiries from Europe, South America and the U.S.

Robert Braithwaite 1943 - 2019

Sadly, in the early hours of morning 7th March 2019, Sunseeker’s founder Robert Braithwaite passed away.  Robert was an inspiration to everyone at Sunseeker and to the wider marine industry, recognized as a boating pioneer, a true visionary and someone who changed the face of boating.  Robert was not only the company’s founder but the father of the Sunseeker family from Dorset, and worldwide through our its dealers and clients. Robert Braithwaite will always live on as the driving force behind Sunseeker's success.  Robert started the Sunseeker journey in 1960 first founding Poole Powerboats, as a dealer and importer of small and medium sized sports boats and cruisers and eventually venturing into boat building and founding Sunseeker. From the mid eighties onward Sunseeker has seen growth of market share and size, with an important milestone being reached in 1995 when the company launched the Predator 80, its first super yacht over 24 meters in size, which was the sign of bigger things to come.  Since over a decade Sunseeker is a front runner in the top ten builders of super yachts over 24 meters in length, and have so far build up to a 155 feet size in length.  Sunseeker was also an innovator among the British production boat builders being the first to produce boats, designed around the Mediterranean sporty side of the market. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with his immediate family.

New Model: Horizon FD77 Skyline

Following the tremendous success of Horizon's Fast Displacement series, the first Horizon FD77 completed sea trials successfully and is now on her way to the U.S. to make her debut at the Palm Beach boat show. The FD77 joins the FD85, FD87 Skyline, FD102 Skyline and the FD125 Skyline in this popular series. This new model was specifically designed to appeal to active owner-operators. Interest from current Horizon owners who operate their own yachts inspired the design of the FD77, which retains the same styling and spacious characteristics of her larger sisters, wrapped in a compact package that affords ease of operation and excellent sea-keeping capabilities. The brand-new Horizon FD77 maximizes interior volume with unique floor-to-ceiling glass sections that invite plenty of natural light and spectacular views into the salon, dining area and on-deck master stateroom. A sliding glass door to starboard in the main salon accesses the exterior walkway leading to the forward deck, further enhancing the openness of this explorer yacht. The well-appointed on-deck master stateroom retains the same style as the rest of the main deck, its open layout, exquisite soft goods and a lighting design adding comfort to an already luxurious space. On the lower deck, three additional staterooms, including two VIPs, echo the feeling of spaciousness found throughout. On the aft, a comfortable settee faced by some additional free-standing chairs seats up to eight persons. Additionally, a large beach club invites relaxation at sea level and located just forward of the beach club is a full head and additional crew cabin. The fore-deck offers a great area for sunbathing and lounging, fitted with a double sun-pad and a comfortable couch facing forward to enjoy the all-around views. This 'Open Bridge' version of the FD77 model offers functional outdoor spaces that rival those found on 27 meter size super yachts. Side wing-stations allow for improved visibility while docking and the bridge deck aft is spacious enough to accommodate a four meter plus tender. Powered by twin Man 1200hp each and fitted with ABT Zero-Speed stabilizers and bow stern thrusters, the new FD77 is bursting with amenities. This new model is the ultimate option for owners who enjoy exploring the sea on their own or with the two crew that can also be accommodated within.

New Launch: CRN 79m hull. 135

CRN is ready to launch its hull number 135, its new 79 meter fully custom steel and aluminium super yacht. The pre-launch positioning process has revealed the sleek shape of this imposing yacht, elegantly delineated by the smooth lines of her hull. M/Y 135 was designed by the CRN Technical Office in partnership with the Zuccon International Project design studio, which looked after the exterior, and with the Laura Sessa architecture studio, which developed the interiors.  With the aid of motorised hydraulic lift trucks, the super yacht was positioned on the slipway, the inclined surface where the pre-launch operations will be completed over the next few weeks. Handling a yacht weighing over 1400 tons was a complex and spectacular operation, made possible by the total dedication and specialist expertise of the CRN workers. Besides 135 79m, CRN is currently constructing another three fully custom yachts; 137 62m, for delivery this summer, 138 62m, and 139 70m.

Journey Into The Past

With the success of the new 2018 launched Maritimo X series aft cabin sport yacht, it is time to go down memory lane and tell the story about what I like to call the Italian aft cabin sport cruiser and yachts, which had so much success in Italy onward from the eighties.
It is fair to start that the Italians where not the first to put an aft cabin in a sport cruiser.  A British firm Fairey Huntsman had so much success in the advent period of power boat racing in the sixties, presented what might have been the inspiration to the Italians with the 31 Aft Cabin in 1968.  The Fairey Hunstman 31 Aft Cabin cruiser was also available in the Aft Cockpit version, of which six where sold, in a total of 32 builds.
With Magnum Marine dominating the large open Italian sport cruiser and yacht market with its 45 and 53 models in the seventies and early eighties, Mochi Craft tries to reinvent the wheel and present the new 42 Tuxedo, which creates a revolution of space in the Italian sport cruiser market, which at the time had a production standing still sub fifty feet.  Just like the Fairey Hunstman 31, the Mochi Tuxedo was offered without an aft cabin choice, though these versions are very rare and few where made of what it is a production run of around seventy units.  The Mochi Tuxedo sets a revolution of space and comfort and by mid late eighties over half of new Italian sport cruiser and yacht models at upwards of thirteen to sixteen meters in size are with an aft cabin.  The aft cabin gives a second large en-suite cabin aft something which the Magnum 45 and or Baia B40 did not have, as both of these where single cabin sports cruisers.
Worth to mention in this period is also the Pershing 45 launched in 1985 the first model of what at the time was known as Cantieri Navali dell Adriatico Pershing, and will eventually become a status symbol sport yacht builder for its unique combination of performance and space.  The 45 was also one of Fulvio de Simoni first designs and in a size of just under fifteen meters offered three cabins three bathrooms, and the largest exterior area in its class.   The first Pershing 45 was a success selling 47 units in a production which lasted seven years till 1992.  The 45 will be the brands best seller till the 1995 presented 54, which will sell above fifty in a similar eight year production run, and continues the aft cabin theme, but with the surface drive high performance option which in later models becomes standard.  The 54 was Pershing and Fulvio de Simomi most important design to date, and still considered a head turning classic nowadays.  If you can call the Pershing 54 a classic, cause looking at one it does still look modern.
The Pershing 54 came in the golden era of the aft cabin sport yacht with tough competition all of which came from Italy, with its closest rivals being the Sarnico 55 which was later revamped as 58, and the Rizzardi 50 and 53 Topline, this last also being a top seller with some seventy units sold for the smaller unit.  Other interesting aft cabin sport yachts where the classic timeless looking Itama 54 and 56, Alfamarine 50 and 60 models, and the Italcraft X54 Ipanema.
And the British who started the style with the Fairey Huntsman what happened to them?  Sunseeker did have a shot at the aft cabin sport cruiser in 1987 with the Travado 40, and in 1990 with the 46 Camargue, the later one more successful then the first.  But it did really stop there!
