New Model: Riviera 645 SUV

Riviera officially launched its innovative new 645 SUV on the opening of the 2021 Sanctuary Cove boat show.  The 645 SUV is the largest model in Riviera's SUV collection, combining the high-level blue-water pedigree of the lauded Sports Motor Yachts with the single-level living attributes so much loved by Sport Yacht owners.  The 645 is available in two editions; the Classic and the Newport. The Newport includes a distinctive Tungsten silver hardtop, a spacious foredeck sun-pad, avant-garde saloon features and three-cabin accommodation with a lower-deck lounge space.  Riviera pioneered the SUV concept in 2012 and has since continually refined this design, crafting more than 170 yachts ranging from 39 to now 64 feet.  The 645 becomes the flagship of the six-model SUV collection. She offers extensive accommodation, premium comfort and luxury and longer-range offshore cruising while enhancing the superb indoor-outdoor lifestyle features that make the SUV models so practical and popular.  The 645 SUV offers the choice of three or four staterooms, three bathrooms and an utility, crew or additional accommodation aft of the master stateroom. Project: Tankoa T580

Tankoa is pleased to announce the sale of the new T580 yacht.  This is the first 58-metre model, a fantastic addition to the fleet of the Italian shipyard. The hull will be built in steel with aluminium superstructures; the exterior design is by Francesco Paszkowski, while the interiors are by Margherita Casprini.  This sale, conducted and completed in collaboration with Giancarlo Mussino, Managing Director of Sinos S.A., who introduced the client and will represent them during construction, once again confirms the ability of the Genoa-based shipyard to develop fully customisable projects.  From the first previews, the Tankoa T580 will be a "World Wide Explorer" with a sporty profile, able to cover long cruises thanks to a range of more than 5 thousand nautical miles. She will also have a helideck at the bow, six cabins in addition to the crew cabins, a large beach club with folding side walls to make the most of "a private island" and a garage capable of accommodating two tenders, including a 9-metre limo tender.  Construction will begin in July and the new Tankoa T580 is scheduled for delivery in April 2024.

New Model: Sunseeker 90 Ocean

Presented as a project in 2019 as 8X, the Sunseeker 90 Ocean is a revolutionary new model part of the famous Poole, British boat builder Yacht line.  This new 90 Ocean is a forward thinking model which goes away from the usual schemes we are used from Sunseeker; the forward upright full bow, and the aft 24 square meters open beach club are different to what has come before her from Poole.  Yet upward to the shear line it is all so distinctive Sunseeker, with the radar arch an always important design feature showing aggressiveness and sportiness.  We have a lesson and statement from the 90 Ocean; forward thinking yes, but forgetting your design distinctiveness never, and why should Sunseeker forget, considering they have one of the most known boating signatures in the World.

Project: Wajer 77

At the end of April in a live media stream Wajer presented its new 77 project.   Designed by Sinot with naval architecture by Van Oossanen the 77 is to be Wajer's new flagship upgrading its current offer by six meters in length from the 55, which is the Dutch builder current largest offer.  At 23 meter in length the Wajer 77 is a sport yacht concentrated on exterior living and enjoyment of the environment.  Thanks to its exterior design and walk around side decks the 77 offers three dinette areas; fore deck, midships under the hardtop, and aft, and this is followed by two sunbathing areas fore and aft. Interior accommodation is for three double cabins, with a full beam owners midships. a midships crew cabin, and a small dinette and galley in between the cabins to starboard side.  Still on the website Wajer stresses the point saying that the interior layout can be customized.  Tender stowage is for a PWC up to 3.20 meters with additional space for other toys as Seabobs and electrical surfboards also being available.  The Wajer 77 will feature a deep Vee hull with a 21 degrees deadrise, and powered by triple Volvo 1000hp with IPS pod drives will reach speeds up to 37 knots.

New Model: Castagnola Heritage 9.9

There is always magic surrounding a custom project, whether the size is five or fifty meters. The magic comes from the fact that in a custom the boat builder is not bound to commercial serial production, and builds a boat in fitting to the clients request. Castagnola from Lavagna in the South of Genova, Italy has always been a custom builder, and while they are mostly known for Italian style motor and super yachts upwards of twenty meters, with this new Heritage 9.9 they surprised the Nautical World for a size which is very rare associated with custom building, more so in the European continent.  The Heritage 9.9 is a creation born from the will of Giovanni Castagnola grand son Gabriele Maestri, who helped by Nauta design for the exterior and interior, and Francesco Rogantin for naval architecture created this fully custom ten meter sport cruiser.  In the Heritage 9.9, Nauta designed a day sport cruiser idle for that occasional over night stay for a couple, with an interior sleeping two in a central double berth which is served by a separate shower head to port side. Outside is where the living of the Heritage 9.9 is concentrated with two double aft sun-pads, a C-shaped dinette to port side, opposite L-shaped galley, and helm station to starboard.  The Castagnola Heritage 9.9 is powered by twin Yanmar 320hp with stern drive propulsion which allows for top speed up to forty knots.

Project: Mazu 92 DS

After winning over an international clientele for its fast planning sports cruisers and yachts built of lightweight carbon composites, Mazu Yachts from Turkey has announced its entry into steel construction with the 92 DS, the first of a new semi-displacement series that will be followed by a 112 DS and 132 DS model. The steel keel of the first semi-custom 92 DS has been laid, but Mazu is drawing on its experience of working in carbon composite for the superstructure to keep the weight down and the centre of gravity low. The yacht will be powered by triple Volvo 800hp with IPS drives as propulsion for a top speed of 22 knots and a cruising speed of 16 knots. This is the first time IPS propulsion has been installed on a steel-hulled yacht, requiring close collaboration with Volvo and Profjord in Sweden for the engineering and naval architecture. The Crossover-style exterior profile by Red Yacht Design features a raised pilothouse positioned forward in order to maximise the interior volumes. The dramatic vertical bow adds visual impact and increases the waterline length. The two-tone hull design introduces a striking new aesthetic. The owner’s suite in Red Yacht Design vision is located in the widebody section of the main deck forward with a bathroom in the bow. The walk-around section of the superstructure houses the main salon illuminated by full-height windows and the galley. There is al fresco dining for a full complement of eight guests and sun loungers on the open aft deck. Stairs on both sides lead down to a very large swim platform with room for stowing a tender and Jet Ski while under way. The bulwarks fold down on either side to increase the platform area. Glass sliding transom doors lead into a relaxing beach club area with bar that can be arranged according to client preference.  The beach club also features interior access from the main salon. Forward are two twin-single guest cabins and a full-beam VIP suite. There are two crew cabins with shared bathroom in the bow. Unusually for the size of yacht, the crew have their own service stairs. There is more lounging space, as well as dining facilities and the exterior helm station shaded by the hardtop on the fly deck.

Lake Lanier Boat Explosion Injures Six Persons

An eleven meter Carver motor cruiser injured six people as it exploded and went on fire after refuelling at the gas dock in Margaritaville, Port of Indecision, Lake Lanier, Georgia at about 14:30 hours of Sunday, May ninth.  Georgia game wardens and Hall County Fire Services found a devastating scene and had to airlift a 16-year-old female and a 13-year-old male to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta. Hall County Fire Services also transported a 39-year-old woman to Grady by ambulance.  A nearby dock also went on fire due to a jet ski that drifted away from the area.  Hall County Fire Marshal is investigating what caused the fire and explosion to the Carver Cruiser.
The Carver motor cruiser in this fire is a 638 Santego model produced from 1990 to 92, and then renamed as the 380 and produced till 2002.  An evolution of the 3867 which introduced Carver's Santego line, the 638/380 Santego is reported to have sold a thousand units in its twelve year production run.  The Carver Santego was an evolution of the Mariner line which was introduced in the seventies featuring a semi-raised bridge station to allow for a roomier interior.

Falcon Yachts New Web Site

Falcon Yachts present its new World wide web virtual showroom.  This new website coincides with the relaunching of the brand, with a new ownership, T-Quest Holdings taking over the name in 2019.  Falcon Yachts was founded by Edoardo Spreafico in 1988, when he opens his boat yard in Viareggio and with it launches the Falcon Yachts brand.  But Spreafico entrance into luxury yachting starts in 1968 when he opens the CTM Cielo Terra Mare luxury goods shop in Milan.  In 1970 the Milan office is followed by a new one in Viareggio dedicated to yachting and becoming Versilcraft official dealer.  In 1988 the Canteiri Navali Versilcraft in Viareggio is opened by Spreafico and with it the Falcon Yachts brand is launched.  The idea here is to build the Falcon Yachts brands in the size of sixteen to 23 meters, leaving the yachts larger to this for the Versilcraft brand.  Following increase in demand another establishment is opened in Viareggio in 1992, called Falcon Yachts, while the Versilcraft shipyard is renamed to Cantieri Navali Falcon, this is also marking the separation of the two brands. Falcon Yachts had an incredible success in the nineties and first decade of the new millennium with various semi production super yachts; 82, 86/90, 91/92 series, and 100 models being top sellers in there respective sizes and semi-custom offering. Falcon Yachts will close its doors in 2015, but in 2019 T-Quest Holdings will buy the brand and a new facility in Pisa to cater for production. Falcon Yachts new website takes you around in Italian, English, and Spanish language.

New Model: Grand Banks 85

In March 2021 Grand Banks launched its new flagship, the much awaited 85 model.  This new Grand Banks flagship enters the famous brand into the Super Yacht beyond eighty feet, with the previous largest model being the 76 launched in 2011.  With Mark Richards taking over Grand Banks in 2015 the famous brand has changed dramatically in recent years becoming from a traditional trawler inspired product with a semi planning hull to an innovative one characterized of a light weight stiff strong construction, and a planning V-warp planning hull shape design for maximum efficiency.  The Grand Banks 60 first model of the new management launched in 2017, showed the new direction of this important name in production pleasure boating.  Considering Mark Richards CV of Americas Cup and his Palm Beach brand we are looking at impressive performance details from weight saving which is about 30% less to most of the competition in the same size without losing any technical attributes, to the design of the V-Warp hull form which moves little to less water and provides maximum efficiency.  Both these details have been always present in the Palm Beach brand, putting them in the Grand Banks without losing the identity of a brand build on the opposite is not easy.  I personally like what Richards is producing with Grand Banks, it is interesting to see what the brand followers and long standing fans think of this.  Sales are definitely complimenting what Richards is doing with the 60 arriving to twenty hulls up until the start of 2021, even though she is among the most expensive nineteen meters production boats in the market.

Fairline stylish F//Line 33 now offers a new cockpit layout, which provides both sunbathing and seating options simultaneously. Additional improvements include a larger helm, a sleek hard top and a below deck galley all of which expand the thrilling possibilities onboard the F//Line 33.  Fairline’s sleek and sporty dayboat, the F//Line 33, has taken the market by storm since launching in September 2019, winning awards across the industry. A collaboration between Fairline and Italian designer Alberto Mancini, the F//Line 33 has been highly praised for its breath-taking design and impressive performance achieving speeds of 48 knots and comfortable 30 plus cruising. The new cockpit features ‘C’ shaped seating to the starboard side with the aft backrest doubling up as a headrest for the two-person sunbed. The cockpit will comfortably seat four to six people around a fixed height teak-top table. Sportfish Boat With Migrants Beaches in Boynton Beach Florida

A twelve meter sportfish cruiser coming from Haiti with thirty migrants onboard ended aground and partly sank in Boynton Beach, Florida on the morning of third May. Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office and Gulf Stream Police Department detained all thirty individuals, keeping them in federal custody. The sportfish was reported leaking fuel, and was cleaned from all contaminations on Thursday sixth, and then salvaged by TowBoatU.S Fort Lauderdale on Saturday eight May.  It is not reported if the sportfish cruiser was stolen.
The sportfish cruiser in this sinking is a first generation Post 42 Sport Fisherman.  Introduced in the fall of 1974 and produced till 1983, Post produced 230 units of the 42 Sport Fisherman, making it's best sold model to date.  The Post 42 Sport Fisherman was replaced by the 43 in 1984, with a second generation 42 coming in 1997.

New Model: Azimut 53

There was a lot of interest for the launch of the Azimut 53, from the brand fans, competition, and self generated by the largest privately owned yacht and super-yacht builder. The self generated interest was very well thought with three pre-launch information Youtube video series, and official digital unveil of the model on 13 March.  The 53 continues and expands Alberto Mancini story with Azimut, which started in 2018, and with it is in his second model for the Flybridge line following the 78 launched in 2019.  This new Azimut 53 changes how the medium sized flybridge yachts sub twenty meter from the Italian builder look by not little, and here we see a motor yacht with a very low sporty upper structure.  The Azimut 53 following the 78 is also the second flybridge model to be powered by Volvo IPS propulsion, this choice being made to increase space, allow better performance and also make owner operation easier thanks to the systems joystick.  Contrary to the 78 and the sports S series models onwards from 2011, the 53 features a traditional dual propulsion set up. Azimut was one of the first to join the IPS revolution in 2006 with the 43S, and then in 2008 it followed this with the sister Atlantis brand and its 50X model.  But putting the IPS into the flybridge line has been a long research process from Azimut even though back in the IPS initial sea trials from 2005 the company was rumoured to have done extensive testing on flybridge boats with both the 50 and 55 models from that era.  The results of that testing seems to have brought us here to this new Azimut 53, which possibly has been in the making especially below the waterline much longer then we think.

Leonardo da Vinci DNA

Sometimes I wonder if it was not for the Italians where would yachting be.  The Italians have been pushing the envelope in design and engineering in boats since pleasure boating started, and they seem to never stop.  Actually when you think they can't go any further here comes the next break through and again it is from the shoe shaped peninsula.

For the past months we have seen again the Italians push the envelope again, and while some of these may get the stick for being too different they do bring something fresh to yachting design.

A recent fresh revolutionary design comes from the Cetera 60, a new brand founded by Fiart entering into explorer and live aboard segment.  This explorer motor yacht, reinvents cabin space by putting all three cabins on the main deck.  With the top deck serving as lounge dining area.

Another technical break though comes from Bimax who present a forward looking shaft drive system on an eight and a ten meter sport cruiser.  This system called Eco Drive System apart improving efficiency, also reduces bow angle at lower speeds.

Sure some reviewer sometimes calls the Italians to much design focused, but really yachting has a big thank you to give to Italy and all the inventions they brought of a lot of stuff which today we take fore granted.

Extended bathing platform and tender garage by Ferretti in the mid eighties, surface drives and propeller tunnels by Italcraft along with the variable deep Vee hull, full beam midship cabin by Versilcraft in the seventies repicked by Azimut in the late nineties, large windows in cabins by Azimut in late nineties, astern galley again by Ferretti in 2005, integrated windscreen by Pershing in early nineties, and Baia also being the first to use Arneson trimmable surface drives on a production motor boat.

Monthly News - April 2021

-pic of the month- Feadship Finds Mira

Back Cove and Sabre Changes in Sales Marketing Duties

The end of March brought a big change at Sabre and Back Cove: after almost 30 years, Bentley Collins will complete his retirement, and, while remaining on our Management Committee, will relinquish his day-to-day sales and marketing responsibilities to Lynn Beaudoin at Sabre Yachts and Jamie Blomquist at Back Cove Yachts and Jamie Governale.

Benetti Leads Italian Yachting Surge

Under the present Covid 19 restrictions, the nautical market has enjoyed a busy season, originating from the widespread desire for escape, freedom and safety, which can be enjoyed at sea. Benetti has seized this market moment with a wide range of new generation models to consolidate the boom in sales.  This success results as much from the strong numbers in the composite megayacht division from 29 to 44 meters, as from the custom steel division, which has sold 15 yachts with a concentration in the 50-70 meter range.  Particularly impressive are the successes of the Benetti Oasis 40M, a yacht in such demand that it was necessary to double the number of molds and that soon will be followed by a sistership a little bit smaller in size. Other standout models include the Benetti Motopanfilo 37M, which evokes of the lines of the iconic 1950s Benetti Gabbiano, as well as the Benetti B.Yond 37 meter, a 4-deck explorer under construction that will be the most eco-sustainable yacht available in this market segment.  The Oasis line, which heralded a new concept of life on board, with a stern that can be completely opened to the sea and infinity pool, also serves as an example of the success of many of the custom steel yachts that will carry the Benetti stylistic signature, one for all the B.Now 50M.  Giovanna Vitelli, Executive Vice President of Azimut Benetti Group, said: “We are deeply grateful for the diligent collaboration between the management, the workers and all the representatives of the supply chain, who have dependably supported us. I am proud that the Azimut Benetti Group represents through the tangible sign of its results an excellence, an outpost of that new Italian Renaissance that we all hope.”  Marco Valle, CEO of the Group, added: “Now that we’ve triumphed over the challenging international markets, we must keep our attention focused and continue to pursue the equally demanding work at hand: production continuity in full respect of the health and safety of those who work with us, which has so far been successfully. To all those who work every day to make it possible, I send my heartfelt thanks”.

Feadship Finds Mira

The rich multi-generation-spanning history of Feadship underpins everything we do today as a world leader in high-tech superyacht building. While today’s Feadships are literally and figurately giants of the global fleet, the company also take good care to preserve its heritage whenever possible. Imagine then how much they enjoyed welcoming the 12-metre Mira to the Makkum yard in February, a Feadship with a story or two to tell. Mira is a so-called Express Cruiser, one of a series of 25 mini-Feadships built in the early 1950s as part of the successful brand launch onto the US market. The original build was for a Dutch owner who agreed to let his yacht be exhibited at the New York Motor Boat Show in 1952 as long as we built a new one for him. With her steel hull and mahogany superstructure, this ‘second’ Mira was given the build number 904 and launched in 1953. The boat was found last year on the Dutch equivalent of eBay by Sieger van Kampen, project leader at one of the Feadship training schools. Sieger is always on the lookout for early Feadships as they offer a fantastic way for students and staff alike to hone their refit skills on a yacht that will hold intrinsic brand value. As he looked at the images online the big question of course was whether she actually was a Feadship. Jumping in his car to visit the seller, Sieger found a stripped boat with parts spread all over the place, even in the hayloft. “The owner, who had been unaware that he potentially had a Feadship on his hands, allowed myself and a colleague to search his premises for clues,” remembers Sieger. “There were boxes everywhere, but the big breakthrough came when we found the build number plate 904. We then dived into the archives at Feadship with the help of in-house historian Huib de Vries. Eventually, we found photographs of the boat including the name of the owner and the magic number 904. It was so exciting to be able to confirm that we had tracked down another Feadship.” The students at the Feadship Makkum training school are now giving Mira a complete facelift, including her hull, superstructure, floors and technical aspects. We will share the results in due course but for now the moral of this tale is to keep an eye out when you come across classic boats… You never know where you might find a Feadship!

Feadship Yeti Footprint Break Through

Promising developments have been seen recently with a measurement tool designed to allow the entire superyacht industry to objectively assess the environmental credentials of existing yachts and new concepts. Initiated by Feadship’s Bram Jongepier, the Yacht Environmental Transparency Index (YETI) has been taken to the next level over the past two years under the auspices of the Water Revolution. The ultimate goal of stimulating technologies which reduce energy demand and enhance system efficiency is now much closer.

Feadship Virtual Yacht World

The global travel restrictions have led to a surge in the number of potential owners wishing to see their ideas for a yacht in digital form. Feadship has therefore teamed up with SuperYacht Times, other top yards and leading designers to offer a virtual world solution to this very real-world challenge.

Ferretti Group Strong Growth in First Quarter

Ferretti Group ends the first quarter of 2021 reporting a powerful growth on both economic and industrial fronts. Compared with the same period in 2020, first quarter revenues rose 40%, from EUR 133 million to EUR 186 million. Geographically speaking, Europe and the Middle East confirmed their strategic importance for the Group, accounting for more than half of revenues.  First quarter EBITDA stands at EUR 18 million - vs EUR 5.5 million in the same period the previous year - and new orders, as of today, total over EUR 300 million, a value that represents 56% of the entire 2020 order intake. This last figure in particular points to an extremely positive trend in 2021.  From an industrial perspective, Ferretti Group reported a record number of launches: 56 yachts and superyachts launched in three months against 43 in 2020. Almost all the Group’s shipyards and main brands contributed to this record with iconic models in the world of international yachting like Riva 50 METRI - MY “Fifty”, the new Ferretti Yacht 1000 and Navetta 30 Custom Line.  The first quarter of 2021 also saw the sale of the forty-eighth Wally full custom sailing superyacht, the first unit sold since the brand became part of Ferretti Group.  Over 30 metres long, the yacht has a sail area of 630 square metres and is built entirely from carbon fibre. Wally 101 represents excellence in terms of naval architecture, performance and comfort, presenting itself as a new icon in the world of sailing yachts and confirming the company’s considerable contribution to advances in design and technological innovation in the field of sailing.  “Record-breaking first-quarter EBITDA and equally extraordinary new order growth - including an extremely significant order for a large Wally sailing yacht -, tell the story of a Ferretti Group with the wind in its sails and everything points to a very positive 2021”, said Ferretti Group CEO Alberto Galassi. “The launches are like the dates of a successful show, because this record number in just three months attests to the huge appreciation our boats enjoy and the strength of our production strategies. After excellent performance in 2019 and a basically stable 2020, we were expecting to grow, but this fantastic acceleration has beaten all our forecasts and gives everyone who works in Ferretti Group twice the satisfaction and energy”.

Jarrett Bay Administers Nearly 400 Vaccines

Jarrett Bay Boatworks held a one-day clinic to deliver 395 COVID-19 vaccines for our team members and immediate family, along with other marine businesses in the Jarrett Bay Marine Park and Beaufort and Morehead City area. Twenty healthcare workers from Vidant Health arrived at the Marine Park the morning of Thursday, March 11, 2021, to administer the vaccines.  Jarrett Bay Human Resources Director, Stacie Johnson took the helm of the opportunity after Vidant Health reached out to Jarrett Bay President Randy Ramsey. Working together with Eric Johnson of Vidant Health, Stacie was able to secure 400 vaccines – more than enough for Jarrett Bay’s employees and their immediate family members. With a surplus calculated, Stacie and other Jarrett Bay management team members contacted local businesses within the Marine Park and in the local area to offer their employees the vaccine as well.

Mimi Extends Dealer Network Further

The Gozzi Mimì network continues to grow thanks to the agreement with Navis Marine, a Croatian company which has been operating for some years in the sales, brokerage and consultancy sectors. The boats of the shipyard founded in 1975, which are fast gaining in popularity thanks to their combination of modernity and the flavour of Italian and Neapolitan-made products, have thus gone to join the fleets of the numerous Italian brands already imported by Navis Marine, such as Azimut Yachts, Benetti and Pirelli.  This new partnership represents another step forward in Gozzi Mimì’s internationalisation strategy, which speeded up considerably in the early months of 2021, after a 2020 marked by strong growth and positive economic performance.  Domenico Senese, director of the Campania-based shipyard, commented: “We are acquiring new dealers because we expect a further increase in sales, with the summer season approaching and the ongoing unusual world situation which is favouring the growth of the sector, linked to a demand for safe holidays away from crowded places”.  Gordan Zadro, head of Navis Marine said he was satisfied and proud to add Mimì among the brands that his company represents.

Pearl Announces New Strap Line and Online Configurator

British shipyard Pearl Yachts is beginning a new chapter, building on the unique identity the brand has built over the past 23 years. The new strap line: Boutique Yacht Builder since 1998, is consolidating Pearl’s reputation for attention to detail and the individual customer care, which mass producers cannot match. With no plans to mass produce, the masterful match of Bill Dixon’s coveted exterior designs with living area and cabin detailing by the incomparable Kelly Hoppen MBE places Pearl Yachts as the rarest of the industry stars.  Atelier yacht producers, such as Pearl, find themselves in the privileged position to offer innovative features ahead of the industry. The new Configurator allows online visitors to customise their own Pearl 62 as she takes shape before their very eyes. Interested parties can find this exciting tool on the Pearl 62, which offers a wide range of customisations such as: engines; colours; interiors; electronics and other details and upgrades. When the client is satisfied, the brochure for this unique, custom creation can be easily downloaded, with all the details and images to consider and share with friends & family.  The range of Pearl Yachts currently features three award-winning Flybridge models from 62 to 95 feet: the new Pearl 62, launched just last year with an unprecedented fourth cabin and the choice of garage or crew cabin, the Pearl 80 and the Pearl 95. This streamlined selection is backed by another industry first: Pearl’s 5-year warrantee. Along with build quality, the total result is a brand image that stands among the leading players in the industry, with unparalleled resale value, and the very finest customer support.

Pearl Starts 2021 with Strong Orders and Deliveries

The first three months of 2021 have been ultra-busy for British luxury motoryacht builder Pearl Yachts. Baxter Marine, Pearl’s longest-serving dealer and the US dealer, Atlantic Yacht & Ship Co, have demonstrated the growing international demand for Pearl’s line-up. No fewer than four new-boat contracts have been signed since the new year: A Pearl 95, two Pearl 80s, and a Pearl 62. A similar number of brand-new boats have been handed over to their eager owners: Another Pearl 95 and 4 more Pearl 62s. The slowdowns in global supply chains and new safety restrictions are little match for the experienced Pearl team. Baxter Marine, Pearl Yachts’ longest-serving dealer, has just handed over the third Pearl 95 to her owner in Palma, Mallorca, and Pearl’s US dealer, Atlantic Yacht & Ship Co, has now completed the sale of another Pearl 95 to an American client. The latter boat will be based in Miami, Florida. The next-available Pearl 95 will be ready for delivery towards the end of this year.  Two Pearl 80s – the seventh and ninth of this increasingly popular mid-size model – have been sold to clients intending to keep their boats in Palma, Mallorca, and Montenegro respectively. Again, these sales were handled by Baxter Marine and both handover in May. The eighth unit of Pearl 80 is already in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and is available immediately and the 10th will be ready for delivery towards the end of this year.  Moreover, the year-old Pearl 62 has proved a tremendous success since her world premiere launch at Düsseldorf 2020. The fourth and fifth units are being shipped imminently to France and the USA, the 6th and 7th have British owners and will hand over in the UK this summer and autumn, and the eighth will be exhibited at the Dusseldorf boat show in January 2022. “Despite the pandemic, Pearl Yachts has never been busier,” says Managing Director Iain Smallridge. “There are several reasons why we are experiencing record sales. First and foremost, our model range and designs are so strong, thanks to Bill Dixon’s immensely experience studio, which is responsible for all the exterior lines, naval architecture and space planning, and our stunning and award-winning Kelly Hoppen interiors. In addition, every Pearl model has several unique features, which makes them really stand out from the crowd. Pearl’s high build-quality and keen pricing means we make most owners shortlists and, last but by no means least, we now have an impressive dealer network in the Mediterranean and the USA that not only makes the brand more accessible, but also delivers exceptional after-sales service.”

Riviera Invests in Yacht Transporter

The care and efficiency of moving luxury motor yachts on site at Riviera’s 16.8-hectare Gold Coast boatbuilding facility has been enhanced with the commissioning of a new self-propelled transporter. The Marine Travelift TM100 has capacity to move with ease motor yachts of up to 100 tonnes, or 50 per cent more than the weight of Riviera’s flagship 72 Sports Motor Yacht. This is the latest high-technology enhancement for Riviera as the company prepares for the next phase of a $10 million expansion of the facility this year to meet growing demand.  The 16-wheel loader is managed by a single operator to efficiently manoeuvre large motor yachts in Riviera’s model range across the company’s expansive boatbuilding site. In the past, Riviera’s team would move motor yachts using cradles that were specifically designed for each hull. “The new transporter enables our team to consolidate our workflow, creating greater efficiencies in the process of building luxury motor yachts,” says Riviera’s Supply, Planning and Production director Kyle Davison. “It provides a lot more manoeuvrability, enabling better access to existing and new facilities and, by employing this state-of-the-art technology, the team can take advantage of improved efficiencies and safety on site.” The first stage of Riviera’s expansion last year involved an enlargement of the final fitout building to accommodate larger yachts and the new transporter system. Operated through a remote panel, the Italian-made TM100 offers complete control to easily transport Riviera motor yachts, that can weigh as much as 68 metric tons, from one location to the next at each stage of the boatbuilding process. The open-ended design of the transporter allows the operator to position the device under a parked boat or around a cradle to lift it. This is done after the placement of pads on either side of the hull using hydraulic cylinders which safely stabilises the motor yacht once in position. “The commissioning of the new marine transporter is part of our ongoing investment in new technology to enhance our overall boatbuilding operations,” says Riviera owner Rodney Longhurst.  “Plans are currently under way for the next phase of expanding our boatbuilding facilities on the Gold Coast, and this is an important step in this program as we continue to create bigger, more advanced and sophisticated luxury motor yachts.”  Riviera builds over 100 luxury motor yachts a year from its facility on the Gold Coast, the largest of its kind in the southern hemisphere.

Riviera Expands Team Through Training Initiative

Australia’s largest builder of luxury motor yachts, Riviera, has expanded its recruitment program for 2021 through a new initiative with the Queensland Department of Employment, Small Business and Training (DESBT) that will employ 30 additional craftspeople for its boatbuilding team on the Gold Coast.  In a first for the marine industry, the collaboration uses the combined resources of DESBT and the Federal Government’s Department of Education, Skills and Employment to help trainees fast-track their careers in boatbuilding.  More than 200 potential marine craftspeople have expressed interest in participating in the Riviera-led program which is aimed at enhancing the company’s capabilities to train new professionals in the essential skills needed for building world-class luxury motor yachts.  “This is an important step in ensuring that Riviera has access to the best possible talent to fill the opportunities we currently have available,” said Riviera’s Safety and Training Manager Adam Houlahan.  “Through this collaboration we have been able to secure a shortlist of quality people with varied work experience, some of them mature-aged who can be trained in the skillsets that we require.”  Riviera plans to immediately employ 30 new trade assistants from the program with these new craftspeople participating in a newly created practical training course at TAFE Queensland, which is administered by DESBT.  “This program will allow trainees to develop the skills they need in a timely manner to take up various trade assistants’ roles at Riviera,” said Adam Chanter, the Maritime Senior Project Officer, a position co-funded by the Department of State Development, Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning.  “The trainees will undertake a non-accredited training program that focuses on developing practical skills to meet the needs of both Riviera and the industry.  “From a broader perspective, this collaboration is a model example of multiple government departments working together to achieve positive employment outcomes for all concerned.”  The latest recruitment initiative coincides with Riviera’s expansion program to meet the largest forward orders for luxury motor yachts in the company’s 41-year history.  “Our long-term commitment to training plays an integral role in our ability to create motor yachts that are admired globally for their innovative design, engineering and the most luxurious of interiors,” said Riviera owner Rodney Longhurst.  “We are proud of our ongoing collaboration with DESBT and, in conjunction with our on-site training initiatives, Riviera is not only enhancing the skills excellence of our team, we are also creating the master craftspeople of the future for our industry.”  Riviera is ready to commence the next stage of a $10 million expansion of the company’s Gold Coast boatbuilding facility. This follows the welcoming earlier this year of a record 41 new apprentices into Riviera’s award-winning training program to continue enhancing the skills of the company’s 600-strong team.

Riviera Escape to Moreton Island

R Marine Jones, representative for Australia’s largest luxury motor yacht builder Riviera, recently led a flotilla of 34 Riviera yachts on an extended long weekend of fun and adventure to the natural wonders of Moreton Island.  With challenging access and a deluxe reputation, the Riviera motor yacht owners jumped at the chance to join the veteran R Marine Jones crew for their annual Kooringal Experience.  At 6am on January 28, the fleet set off from the Gold Coast Broadwater, led by Randall and Melinda Jones with their son Jack at the helm.  Tucked in the south-west tip of Moreton Island, Kooringal is a couple of hours from the Gold Coast and yet it may as well be another world away.  Shifting sandbars fringe the tiny town and make a permanent channel marker system impossible. For those who dare navigate the half mile between the end of the Island’s buoyage system and safe anchorage, the rewards are plentiful: total serenity, abundant wildlife, a rustic beachside bar and freshly shucked oysters from the local farm.  For their first Experience event, Bret and Leasa Lashmar joined the flotilla in Moreton Bay at Peel Island, having cruised south from the Sunshine Coast on their recently acquired Riviera 395 SUV, Protector.  “Kooringal isn’t the easiest place to get into, which is part of its allure,” said Mr Lashmar. “The trip there with the team was great and we learned a lot including some of the better anchoring techniques.”  By 10am, all 34 Riviera luxury motor yachts had entered the passage on high tide, guided by markers laid out by the R Marine Jones team. While the arrival of over 100 Riviera adventurers more than tripled Kooringal’s resident population (45 in the 2016 census), the sheltered anchorage offered plenty of space for everyone.

Viking Key West Challenge

Eight minutes after lines in was called, Rosalie Apostoleres released a sailfish on the Viking 50 Roenick. One minute later, Captain Casey Hunt reported a sail for her husband Nick. And team Roenick never relented, dominating the 7th Annual Viking Key West Challenge from start to finish. Roenick covered the leader board and took home both Top Boat and Top Angler (also Top Lady Angler, Top Sailfish Boat, 3rd Place Angler and 1st and 3rd Sailfish Angler), with Rosalie hanging 18 flags and Nick adding six over the two fishing days. In addition to their hardware, they also walked off with a Spot Zero mobile unit and Switlik Coastal Passage Raft.  Game Changer, Robert Boyce’s Viking 80, had a strong Day 2 with 10 releases, sealing their 2nd Place spot in the Sailfish Release category with a total of 15 fish. Matthew Boyce claimed five of those sails and accepted the Top Junior Angler honours. Jack Sheehan and his team on the Viking 72 Manna Ray rounded out the sailfish category in 3rd Place with 11 sails.  A 52.6-pound wahoo, caught by Chad Moss on Bob Moss’ Viking 72 Sandbob, took 1st in both the angler and boat categories. David Raisbeck’s Viking 92, Raiser’s Edge, was the Top Tuna Boat, and Bill Raisbeck took Top Tuna Angler with a 24-pounder recorded at the ASEA Weigh Station. The Viking Key West Challenge, presented by Christi Insurance and Spot Zero, saw records both on the leaderboard and with a 50-boat fleet which included four Valhalla center consoles. Keeping with the “More Than Just Fishing” theme, participants enjoyed a festive Captains’ Meeting cocktail party, Welcome Dinner under the stars, lay day barbecue pool party, kid’s dock tournament, bar crawl poker run (with no cheating!), al fresco awards dinner with a sunset view and – oh yeah – two days of awesome fishing fun. “I’ve never seen so many smiling faces and happy people,” said Viking President and CEO Patrick Healey.

Viking Advance in Marlin Madness

Viking 80 Krazy Salt’s…they’ve advanced in Marlin magazine’s Marlin Madness. The Salt’s gang is battling in the Florida bracket, while the Viking 60, Hubris, is seated in the East Coast Bracket. The 74 Draggin’ Up and Walk West, a Viking 55, are still holding strong in the Gulf Coast Bracket.

Super Yacht Partially Sinks Near Chud Cay

A 25 meter super yacht titled m/y Adamo with only its captain onboard hit a reef near Chud Cay in The Bahamas, and partially sank with bow sticking out of the water on 29 April.  Some days before Adamo was reported for having a previous collision with a coral head reef in the Yellow Banks, damaging its running gear, with the captain having a brawl with the crew and guests and these abandoning the yacht in Nassau. Because the yacht was single handed by the captain the insurance refused cover and assistance in salvaging Adamo, which in the meantime became a navigational hazard drifting around partially sank in the area.
M/y Adamo is a Peer Gynt 85 build in Turkey in 2008 to a design of Bill Dixon.  Adamo was previously named m/y Mr K, and Rubber Duck is the only Peer Gynt 85 unit launched, tough the hull, but longer and a bit different super structure was the same basis for the Peri 29 which sold in five units from 2007 to 2011.

New Model: Bimax 28 Alchimia

Just when you thought you have seen it all, here comes Bimax a shipyard from Latina to the South of Rome in Italy, and its new revolution the 28 Alchimia.  So what's new with the Bimax 28 Alchimia is that this walkaround sport cruiser of just over eight meters in length is powered by a single shaft drive inboard engine with what the company calls its Eco Drive System.  The Eco Drive System has a pull propulsion shaft system looking forward and only seven degrees shaft angle.  The result is that with this you do not get the bow high of the traditional shaft drive especially in transition or early planning phases with Bimax claiming a bow rise of only one degrees.  While consumption is only at one litre per nautical mile or twenty litres per hour at fast cruise.

Riviera Beached at Lakes Entrance

A Rivera fourteen meter sportfish cruiser was beached on a sand bank following an engine failure, at the entrance of Lakes Entrance in the South East of Australia on the evening of 27th April.  The Riviera was a day later on the 28th towed away and brought to safety by the local Coast Guard and Water Police. The boat suffered minimal damage.  This particular Riviera 48 Enclosed is doing a rather long trip of half Australia from Newcastle to Perth.  This accident will slow the journey a couple of weeks for repairs.
The Riviera in this beaching is a 48 Enclosed, as produced from 1993 to 2004 in 169 units, this also including the Open Bridge version.  The 48 was the first Riviera model offered in an open or enclosed flybridge option up top, and offered two lower deck layouts choices.

New Model: Columbus Sport 50

Columbus Yachts, brand of Palumbo Superyachts, launched and completed the first sea trials of the new 50-metre Sport M/Y K2 at the Ancona shipyard.  Born in 2011 with its award-winning 40-metre models, the Columbus Sport line confirms its success.  Featuring a vertical bow and sleek lines, this project has broken the mold of the time and has become an icon of sportiness and elegance.  The fleet is now enriched with a new 50-metre model which encompasses the distinctive elements of this design and combines new aesthetic features to an engineering development of the hull which in navigation guarantees a high level of comfort even in rough sea conditions. Columbus Sport 50 stems from the naval engineering of Palumbo Superyachts in collaboration with Hydro Tec. The external lines and the interior design are penned by Luca Dini.  Characterized by several unprecedented solutions designed at the owner’s request, who is on his third project with Palumbo Superyachts, Columbus 50 Sport  accommodates eleven guests in five comfortable cabins assisted by eleven crew members housed in seven cabins. The aluminium hull and superstructure together with a gross tonnage of 499 are definitely one of the strength points of this vessel that, combined with a maximum draft of 2.2 m, make her a one-of-a-kind yacht on the market capable of sailing in shallow waters.  Powered by two 2600hp MTU engines, Sport 50 reaches a top speed of 21 knots, a cruising speed of seventeen with a long range for transoceanic passages.  Performance analysis at the lowest speeds reported very interesting results, also considering the keel structure, with a consumption of seventy litres per hour at ten knots.  From a technical perspective, another carefully-considered aspect was noise and vibration reduction: during the sea trials just carried out, Columbus 50 Sport achieved extremely low noise levels in the guest cabins. This is particularly remarkable as they were obtained at 85% of maximum engine power, at a speed slightly above 20 knots.  Columbus Sport 50 is scheduled to make her official debut at the upcoming Monaco Yacht Show in September.

Project: Absolute 60 Fly

Absolute approaches the start of boating season creating high expectations for the Generation 2022 new models. A very optimistic opening awaits Absolute thanks to the launch of a brand new range, as well as two exciting new models.  The first revolution will take place with the 60 Fly project a completely new model called and a motor yacht that will redefine the range with new ground-breaking design elements never seen on a Flybridge boat of eighteen meters in size, such as the Owner’s quarter at the bow and the aft cockpit terrace, free from any fixed furniture elements. The 60 Fly by Absolute reveals an overturning of perspectives, an evolution for the range and for the owner, with versatile life on board and liveability of the spaces.  A new perspective is offered by the bow master cabin, thanks to the owner’s quarter concept: a cabin which takes up the full beam of the boat, unprecedented on a 60/70-foot yacht. The cabin is raised from the lower deck, the ceiling is high, and the array of textures and colour choice for the interior design will satisfy even the most refined tastes. The atmosphere is sophisticated and relaxed, dedicated to the owner’s comfort and privacy: the walk-in wardrobe, the vanity with a sea view, and the wide side windows to feel fully immersed in nature complete the ambience.  The exterior lines are now enriched by elegant transparencies, thanks to the glazed balustrades that offer breath-taking views from both the fly and the cockpit: the latter, thought without fixed elements, can be furnished at the owner’s taste for the first time.  From the aft cockpit there are two comfortable staircases, ideal to reach the wide platform to enjoy a terrace just above the sea; the ample dimensions of the platform offer a comfortable entrance to the crew cabin, through the pantograph door concealed in the transom.  On the upper deck, the Fly area offers a second open-air salon totally immersed in the surrounding landscape, whose generous dimensions are just waiting to be lived: al-fresco galley and dining area, lounge space, high-tech helm station are framed by elegant design lines, colour contrasts and refined finishes.  Even the bow area is designed for maximum versatility of use thanks to a comfortable sofa with table, a sunbathing area, and music: social boating and privacy, all in one, day and night.  The Absolute 60 Fly boasts the latest generation technology, featured in modern and ultra-accessorized dashboards, with clear instrumentation always at your fingertips. Both helm stations on the main deck and flybridge have double piloting seats, ergonomic and modern. From the main deck dashboard, a very wide windscreen, with minimized and rounded side support pillars, guarantees an unobstructed view of the horizon. Even on the flybridge, a safe navigation topped with conviviality is ensured, thanks to the sofa and sundeck placed next to the helm, allowing the captain to drive with company. A third mooring station is also available at the stern, which can be integrated in a dedicated cabinet in the cockpit on starboard side, equipped with joystick, bow thruster control and engines ignition panel.  Great care for the furniture as well: on board the Absolute 60 Fly modular furniture can be adapted to the actual use. The areas are dedicated to the social moments with family and friends, to enjoy panoramas in complete freedom: various configurations are available for the owner to choose from, in order to fully enjoy the on-board life as desired. The green attitude of the shipyard proves itself thanks to the opportunity of integrating the solar panels into the hard top to ensure a lower environmental impact. Moored at anchor, the owner can enjoy the silence completely immersed in nature, by using solar energy to operate the essential services on board, without the continuous use of generators. The safety standards fear no competition even with larger models, and the spaces usability is top-notch both for the storage and for maintenance and spaces inspections activities. The Absolute 60 Fly is to be powered by twin Volvo 725hp with IPS pod drive propulsion.  Launching of hull one is planned for June 2021.

Fourteen Rescued from Sinking Sport Cruiser in New Port Harbor

Fourteen persons were saved from a sinking Trojan eleven meter sport cruiser titled m/y Sink or Swim on 14:45 of Sunday eighteen April in New Port Harbor, Orange County.  The fourteen boaters including an 82 year old man were doing a test purchase sea trial when the sport cruiser started to take on water.  The boaters and crew had to put there life vests and jump in the water before the boat sank and where first assisted by a twenty meter size motor yacht, and then by Orange County Sheriff County Patrol.  The Trojan sport cruiser sank in 32 meters of water, with the cause of the sinking being under investigation.
M/Y Sink or Swim is a Trojan 400 Express as produced from 1998 to 2002.  Born as the 370 Express in 1993, becoming the 390 Express with the extended bathing platform in 1995, and then the 400 Express with a larger bathing platform and soft stern redesign.  The 370-390-400 Express was the first Carver Genmar Group era model, who purchased the Trojan name and some molds and tooling in 1992.

New Model: Fiart Cetera 60

Cetera is a new brand founded by long standing Italian boat builder Fiart, who with its first 60 model look to re-invent interior spaces not by little.  Presented as a project in 2019, to a design of Francesco Guida, the Cetera 60 main difference comes from having its three cabins located on the main deck.  The layout of the Cetera 60 is unseen in yachts of this size, even in bigger 24 plus meters size who will have for example only an owners staterooms on the main deck.  The living on the Cetera 60 is located on the upper deck, with an internal stair case leading you to this area, featuring a dining, galley and pilot house area.  A relaxing saloon is located on the forward part of the main deck with excess to the fore-deck dinette.  Some might call it daring, others innovative but the Cetera 60 is something to ponder about, and it will be interesting to see if someone else will follow its solutions in the future.  In the meantime the Cetera 60 has arrived, and its use of spaces is something to talk about since possibly the Versilcraft Mystere of the seventies which had a full beam owners midships cabin in a size of just over fifteen meters.  That went unnoticed for over twenty years.

Classic Yacht Sinking in San Juan

A 1932 wooden build 22 meter Explorer went aground in San Juan, near Stuart Island, on the West side of Prevost Harbour on April 17. The traditional explorer yacht was carrying eight passengers and a dog, when a MayDay was called. An eight meter Lifeproof Patrol Vessel was immediately on the scene rescuing the eight persons and a dog ten minutes after the call. The 22 meter yacht had a gash of about one foot in the lower part of the hull.
Titled Norwester this classic 76 feet explorer yacht was build by Willis J. Read in 1932 to a design of Frank Mudro. This yacht has a colourful history from being commissioned by New York millionaire Charles Gilbert during the Great Depression, to later serving as a Patrol Boat for US Navy during World War II in the forties, to then being owned in the fifties and sixties by John Wayne.  The current owners have owned the yacht for the last three years.
UPDATE: Current owners Rick and Jackie Rutherford have opened the Norwester Foundation to rescue the yacht with $250000 needed to salvage from sinking and $1500000 for repairs.  M/Y Norwester was still adrift as on May 10 in the Salish Sea.  According to reports the keel of the yacht is not intact anymore and rescue operation is now deemed hard if not impossible.

Project: Overmarine Mangusta Oceano 39

Overmarine present the project for a new, revolutionary Mangusta Oceano 39. 39 metres of innovation and expertise, elegance and performance that reinterpret the Mangusta Oceano displacement line in a radically new key. A tri-deck yacht that gives her entire class a new harmonised identity, a yacht that embodies an innovative way of experiencing onboard life, forging a brand-new concept of open spaces and direct contact with the sea thanks to a minimal superstructure and the most extensive use of glass. The uttermost consistency between the yachts' interiors and exteriors creates the effect of the patio of a modern, seaside glass villa. Interior design is minimal and yet warm and cosy, and the foldable terraces can be lowered to provide access to a half circle beach house/garage tailored to the Owner's taste and requirements. Freedom of movement and a constant interaction between all decks are ensured by the aft area, which is a natural extension of the yacht overlooking the sea, the beach area is, indeed, not so much an extensible platform, but a beach house through and through. Minimised bulwarks and glass handrails allow the gaze to freely sweep the horizon, and the ceiling-high sliding glass doors mean that no breath-taking view will ever be missed. An imposing and powerful bow protects the glass wheelhouse and the infinity pool, whose partially see-through bottom lets natural light flood the Owner's stateroom. Another infinity pool can be found on the sundeck, where guests can take in the boundless view and experience that, truly, the limit is only in one's imagination. The exteriors feature deeply sculpted lines. The streamlined profile of the sundeck, in particular, is further emphasised by distinctive and stylish design elements, with sophisticated lighting solutions that reveal the shade of the teak wood covering all external decks and highlight the flawless continuity between indoor and outdoor materials. Every deck has been thought out to enable the Owner to arrange space at his own convenience, thanks to loose furniture and areas that he can easily customise as needed. A true masterpiece, where style and innovation do not go to the detriment of performances, but actually improve them. The dual propulsion available on this yacht can take her to two different maximum speeds; sixteen knots in the displacement version; 21 knots in the fast displacement one. Both models stand out for their impressive noiselessness, which further increases onboard comfort.
