Classic Silverton Partly Sinks in Traverse City Michigan

A ten meter Silverton flybridge cruiser partly sank in West Grand Traverse Bay near Clinch Park. Michigan on the morning of Wednesday 24 July.  Grand Traverse County Dispatch said the Silverton cruiser was unattended, and notified the owner to refloat and salvage the boat.  The case of the sinking is not reported though Facebook social media posts reported as seeing the boat anchored a day prior.

The Silverton in this sinking is a first generation 34 Convertible as produced from the seventies till about the mid eighties.  Silverton will have four generations of the 34 Convertible, with the first mark.2 replacement being based on this same platform but featuring a more spacious main deck.

Unattended Bertram Sinks in Fort Lauderdale

An unattended seventeen meter Bertram sportfish yacht sank while berthed near Esplanade Park at 4200 Southwest Second Street, Fort Lauderdale just before 16:00 hours of Tuesday 23rd July.  Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue responded to the sinking which at this stage did not impede any marine traffic, while SeaTow was called to refloat the yacht.  Incidentally a Jupiter center console of about seven meters in length also sank like some one hundred meters away.  The investigation for the sinking is under investigation.

The Bertram in this sinking is a 540 as designed by Giovanni Zuccon and produced from 2009 till 2012.  The 540 came out as a replacement to the Bertram 570, introducing some more cruising features like forward windshield and lower helm option, although over its production Bertram evolved the model with more sportfishing amenities.

Two Injured as Powerboat Explodes in Lake Michigan Near Waukegan

Two men were injured as a seven meter sport powerboat explored two nautical miles offshore to Waukegan, near the Greenwood Avenue in Lake Michigan on 14:45 of Tuesday 23 July.  The two men, 46-year-old from Washington and 55-year-old man from Franklin Park were taken to Vista East Medical Center in serious condition with burns and smoke inhalation.  The two boaters were rescued by a good Samaritan who happened to be in the area.  The boat was eventually wrecked in the fire, which burned for ninety minutes until it sank.  The cause of the fire is under investigation with the U.S. Coast Guard Great Lakes section saying there was no known pollution associated with the explosion and fire.

New Model: Sirena 48 Hybrid

Just a few months after the world debut of the Sirena 48 motor yacht at the Cannes Yachting Festival 2023, the Turkish yacht builder has unveiled an exciting new hybrid variant of its entry level model. For longer range and more speed, the two highly efficient generators kick in to produce the electricity needed to drive the boat and recharge the batteries. They do this much more effectively than a diesel engine, and can be positioned independently of the propellers, reducing noise and vibration to a whisper. When the boat finally reaches its destination, the batteries are full again allowing you to overnight in total silence no need to start the generators for more than eight hours, even with the aircon running and the galley or AV systems in use. Choice is core to the Sirena Yachts concept, with a range of layouts inside and out, different styling choices and equipment levels. Just as the hybrid propulsion option is available across all models, so the coupé design can be applied to conventionally powered models. In the future, owners will also be able to specify a sleek, curved coach roof on the Sirena 58, 68, 78 and 88. It opens up a new aesthetic for one of the fastest growing brands in its segment.

Project: Contest 52MC T-top

Steve Jobs Super Yacht Collision in Naples

Two famous super yachts, the 78 meter m/y Venus and 120 meter m/y Lady Moura collided while at anchor near Naples on the morning of 22 July, for a video footage filmed from the larger yacht, and was published online on the seventh August.  The accident happened as a gust of wind reportedly of over fifty knots interested the area the super yachts were anchored.  According to reports both of the yachts did not drag anchor, though one of them was reported to have had double the needed chain, which probably is what might have led to this collision.

M/y Venus is a 78 meter Feadship hull number 684 completed in 2012 to a design of Philippe Starck.  Motor yacht Venus is famous because it was commissioned by Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, although he actually never got to see it personally as he died one year before completion, with his widow wife Laurene Powell Jobs taking commission of the yacht and using it privately ever since.

M/y Lady Moura is a 105 meter Blohm and Voss launched in 1990 to a design of Italian Paolo Scanu with interiors by Luigi Sturchio and commissioned by Saudi Arabian Nasser Ibrahim Al-Rashid.  When launched Lady Moura was the ninth largest super yacht, today she sits at number 48, although she still remains the third largest Blohm and Voss yacht, behind the 2008 119 meter m/y A and the 1931 build 136 meters m/y Savarona.  Founded in 1877 Blohm and Voss was purchased by Lurssen in 2016.

Two Boats Wrecked by Fire at Pleasant Yacht Club, Baltimore

Two cruiser boats of about ten meters in length went ablaze at the Pleasant Yacht Club in 1800 block of Wharf Road Sparrows Point, Baltimore just after 09:00 morning time of Sunday 21 July 2024. The blaze was attended by North Point Volunteer Fire Department with two units, and were later assisted by the Baltimore County Marine Emergency who came with unit 269. The blaze was controlled with the boat which started the blaze ending mostly sunk, while the other one to its starboard also partly sunk and had important damage. Two fire fighters were transported to the hospital for heat exhaustion, with both treated and released a bit later. Baltimore County Fire Department is still investigating the cause of this fire.

The flybridge boat in this fire is a Bayliner 3258 Command Bridge as produced from 1995 to 2000.

New Model: Otam 90 GTS

Following its test launch in May, the initial sea trials, immediately confirmed that the first GTS version of the new Otam 90 model exceeded all expectations. Comfort, space, and style blend seamlessly in the luxurious 28-meter super sport yacht with outstanding performance. Propulsion: Sharrow By Veem

 

Sharrow Marine, a subsidiary of Sharrow Engineering LLC, the industry leader in innovative marine propulsion technology, announced today a significant advancement in its partnership agreement with Australia-based Veem Ltd, a designer and manufacturer of disruptive, high-technology marine propulsion and stabilization systems. Heavy Rain Unmoors Dock in Lake Ontario

Heavy rain has ripped a dock in Navy Flats Park, Oaksville, sending the dock and about twenty boats from six to thirteen meters in size drifting into Lake Ontario, at about 13:30 of Tuesday sixteen July. The runaway boats and tens of thousands of dollars of damage were only a slice of the chaos on Tuesday, when the nearby area grounded to a halt as nearly 100 mm of rain overwhelmed its infrastructure with about 170,000 homes and businesses losing power as subway stations and highways flooded. Oakville Marine Search and Rescue assisted the boaters in retrieving the boats with a second crew coming out to help.  There were no injuries, and for the most part, the boats avoided any significant damage.  

But the damage could have been magnitudes greater, with the outcome being very different if this happened on a weekend, when hundreds of people would have been around the harbor. Instead, no boats sank, and collision damage was at a minimum.

Project: Rustler 41

 

Rustler was an unknown name to me, up until some months ago when I came across the rendering of this 41 project as designed by Tony Castro.  Doing some research I have found that Rustler was founded in the early eighties in Falmouth debuting with a 36 sailing boat, and today offers a seven model sail yacht range from 24 up 57.  The Rustler 41 is the Falmouth yacht builder debut in motor boating, with British designer Tony Castro presenting a two cabin lower deck layout with a living on the main deck.  The first unit is currently in build and is to be powered by twin Yanmar 320hp on shaft drives, with pod or outboard options also factored in the design for different customers requests.

Cuddy Cabin Cruiser Sinks at South Bass Island State Park

An unattended seven meter cuddy cabin sport cruiser sank while moored in Lake Erie at South Bass Island State Park, Ohio on the afternoon of Monday fifteen July.  The cuddy cruiser sank with heavy rain, and the waves which struck the boat from outside the dock.  A storm which hit the North East part of USA and South East of Canada created heavy damage for a couple of days, including heavy rail fall which resulted in power cuts.  The cuddy cabin cruiser was recovered on the following day by TowboatU.S.

The boat in this sinking is a Mariah Z241 as produced in the late nineties.  Mariah was founded in 1989, closing down and purchased by Sea Fox in 2001.

One Injured as Aft Cabin Cruiser Goes Ablaze in Pointe-du-Chêne

One male boater was injured as a ten meter aft cabin cruiser went ablaze inside the marina at the Pointe-du-Chêne Wharf in Shediac, New Brunswick, Canada on the afternoon of Sunday fourteen July.  Some testimonies said the male boater was having some engine problems before the boat exploded first and then went ablaze later.  After this the boat went drifting in the marina with the heroics of a group of jet skiers making this a one boat incident, after they towed the boat to a safe area before heading for the gas bar and yacht club.  The Coast Guard and Police are investigating the cause of the fire.

The boat in this fire is a Cooper Prowler 33 Aft Cabin, as produced in the eighties.  Founded in 1970 by Forbes Cooper, Cooper Enterprises was a Canadian boat builder based in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, building sailboats first and powerboats later, closing its doors in 1990.  In its early years Cooper also produced the Catalina 22 and 27 sail boats under license.

Steeler is currently doing the finishing touches for the B62 Beachclub. Build of aluminum the B in B62 stands for the Bronson line which is Steeler line of fast yachts designed and marketed for the North American market.  The Steeler B62 Beachclub will offer a three double berths accommodation with a forward master stateroom, with the lower deck connected to the stern layout with patio doors.  The main deck is actually a helm station partly covered with a three part hard-top.  The first Steeler B62 Beachclub which is currently being finished in the Netherlands, will feature an Aston Martin Tungsten silver color.

Classic Fairline Squadron Destroyed by Fire Near Lido Estensi

A thirteen meter Fairline Squadron with Slovenian flag and eight persons onboard, was destroyed by fire and then sank near Lido Estensi and Porto Garibaldi just after 10:00 morning time of Sunday fourteen July.  The eight persons onboard the Fairline flybridge jumped in the water, as soon as they saw the boat burning, and were assisted first by a nearby sailing boat, and then the Guardia Costiera.  Following this the Vigili dell Fuoco of Ferrara and Guardia Costiera continued to fight the fire, an operation which was completed after three hours, with the fire turned off at 13:30 at about five hundred meters away from the coast.  The cause of the fire is under investigation, with the flybridge boat being filled with fuel some minutes before catching fire at Portogaribaldi.  A recovery is planned for Monday, with the boat being currently boom protected and under observation for any environmental damage it might cause.

The Fairline in this fire is a Squadron 43 as designed by Bernard Olesinski and produced from 1994 to 1997.  The 43 was the entry level Squadron range model, Fairline's flagship flybridge range which in that period arrived up to 62 foot.  The Squadron 43 was a replacement to the 43 and was replaced by the Phantom 46.

2 Injured as Sport Cruiser Collides In Steelworks Park Break Wall, Illinois

An eight meter sport cruiser with six persons onboard collided into the break wall in Steelworks Park, Illinois, Lake Michigan on the night of Saturday thirteen July.  United States Coast Guard sector Chicago responded to the emergency and as they arrived on the accident scene found two boaters injured, and a partly sank boat.  Fire Crews from Chicago also came to the scene and helped in transferring the two injured boats to a hospital.  The cause of the collision was not reported. 

The sport cruiser in this accident is a Monterey 276 Sport Cruiser as produced from 1995 to 1999.  The 276 Sport Cruiser was a replacement and soft evolution of the Monterey 265 Sport Cruiser, with the model replaced by the 282 Cruiser.

Bilgin Yachts proudly announces the launch at its headquarters of West Istanbul Marima of the 50-meter 163 yacht super yacht.  Bilgin Yachts' first launch of 2024 signified the second launch of the 163 series, with the first hull launched in 2023. Classic Formula Boat Destroyed by Fire in Two Rivers

A classic nine meter Formula sport cruiser titled m/y High Life exploded first and then burned down to fire in the City of Two Rivers, Wisconsin Bay on 10:52 morning time of Saturday thirteen July. Photographer Keith Katers was on the scene to show as Two Rivers Fire Department responded to an area in the harbor, just west of the Two Rivers Coast Guard Station, to the boat fire, who on arrival found the sport cruiser, which is part of a fishing charter operation fully engulfed in flames and sending heavy black smoke into the air. The Coast Guard and the Two Rivers Fire Department worked together to secure the boat to the sea wall and extinguish the flames. No one was hurt in the fire, as the crew of High Life jumped off board when the blaze started.  The boat was wrecked and sunk after the blaze, with an investigation ongoing on what caused the fire.

M/y High Life is a Formula 31 SC Express as designed by John Adams and produced from 1981 to 1985.  The 31 SC Express was Formula second size model during its production run.

One Dead One Missing in Sportfish Tanker Collision in Lydia Channel

One man is reported dead, while a 25 year old is missing following a collision between a sportfish cruiser titled m/y Todo Bien and a commercial tanker named Eagle San Antonio near the Lydia Ann Channel and Port Aransas Pass at 05:30 early morning time of Saturday thirteen July. Two other man who were onboard the sportfish were also injured in the collision, one taken to the Coast Guard station Port Aransas for treatment and another to a hospital. Details on what could have caused the collision are under investigation but a tourist said that she heard four loud horn honking at about the time of the accident.  The search for the missing man was suspended on late Saturday morning following over one hundred squared nautical miles search, and a combined forty hours of research which resulted in no success.

M/y Todo Bien is a 1992 Viking 43 Convertible as produced from 1990 to 2002.  The Viking 43 Convertible came out as a replacement to the 41 Convertible and was replaced by the 45 Convertible.

Project: Admiral Quaranta

The Admiral Quaranta project is developed in collaboration between the Monaco-based studio The A Group and The Italian Sea Group Centro Stile for a forty meter semi-production super yacht, while maintaining the brand’s distinctive and elegant design lines.  The style of the exterior lines is contemporary and modern, but without any excesses with curved, sharp or soft lines alternate with more distinct and marked straight lines which provide an elegant and timeless character to the overall aesthetic.  Thanks to its shallow draft, and a flexible internal layout easily adaptable to diverse owner preferences, the Admiral Quaranta is a super yacht ideal to cruise in both the Mediterranean and Caribbean sea.  Admiral Quaranta with feature interiors with six guest cabins, two of which are dedicated to the owner; one located on the main deck, and a more spacious one on the upper deck.  The later with exclusive access from an off-center external staircase, giving maximum privacy and ample outdoor spaces entirely dedicated to the owner.  On the main deck, a large salon houses the living-dining area and a technologically advanced game area.  Three expansive full-height windows frame the landscape, offering uninterrupted views of the surroundings. Classic Sea Ray Saved from Sinking Near Snug Harbor, Great Lakes

A classic Sea Ray cruiser of seven meters in length with four persons onboard was saved from sinking near Snug Harbour, Great Lakes, on the afternoon of Saturday eleven July, 2024.  United States Coast Guard received a call on VHF radio channel sixteen, with Muskegon Marine Patrol tending to the four boaters assistance and in saving the sport cruiser.  The marine patrol removed two boaters, as the other two stayed onboard to save the boat.  Ultimately the boat was saved and towed to a pier in Snug Harbour for repairs.  

The Sea Ray in this accident is a first generation 250 Sundancer as produced from 1985 to 1987.  The first generation 250 Sundancer was a new entry as Sea Ray with good intuition saw demand in smaller sized sport cruisers. The first generation 250 Sundancer was replaced by a second generation 250 Sundancer.

New Launch: Bayliss 82 B29

Some yachts go into stardom not because they do anything special but because of the owners who own them.  It is the case for this very much kept in secret during build and delivery fully custom Bayliss 29th hull, titled Catch 23.  Bayliss B29 is owned by none the less then basketball legend Michael Jordan, a replacement to his previous Viking 80 Convertible.  Recognizable by its unique paint work which is similar but a bit different to his previous 24 meter Viking Convertible.  Recognizing the name and paint work social media went on a frenzy when B29 appeared in the early parts of spring, with the speculation following through.  For like three months Bayliss did not even publicize the build, something unusual as the Wanchese boat builder always announces new builds with a follow through during construction.  Then Bayliss B29 finally appeared on its web site in June.

Hurricane Beryl

Hurricane Beryl was a deadly and destructive Atlantic hurricane that impacted parts of the Caribbean, the Yucatán Peninsula, and the Gulf Coast of the United States, forming on 28 June and dissipating eleven July 2024. It was the earliest-forming Category 5 hurricane on record and the second such storm in the month of July, the other being 2005's Hurricane Emily. Beryl was also the strongest hurricane to develop within the Main Development Region of the Atlantic before the month of July. The second named storm, first hurricane, and first major hurricane of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season, Beryl broke many meteorological records for the months of June and July, primarily for formation and intensity.  Beryl caused catastrophic damage on Grenada's northern islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique and on several of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines' southern islands, such as Union Island and Canouan. In Venezuela, six people were killed and one person missing. Sustained damage was also recorded in the Yucatán, although it was generally limited to trees, power poles, and roofs, as well as some flooding. In the United States, the state of Texas experienced severe flooding and wind damage, with reports of at least 22 dead in the Houston region. Additionally, the outer bands of the hurricane produced a tornado outbreak, with tornadoes confirmed in Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Kentucky, Indiana, New York, and Ontario. As of July 18, a total of fifty fatalities have been confirmed, and preliminary damage estimates are more than US$6.2 billion.

Boating wise Hurricane Beryl major damage came in Carriacou and Petit Martinque, were it landed on second July, pilling up yachts in the boat filled area of Tyrell Bay and the island of Plaza Santos.

In Texas the damage was minimum though some boats and yachts still suffered to Beryl storm surge, with this Azimut 54 ending sinking on eight July.

Project: Grand Banks 62

Grand Banks Yachts presents the project of the 62, a new model which continues to solidify the near seventy-year history of designing and building pioneering long-distance explorer yachts that combine both speed and range. Like all Grand Banks models, the 62 evolved from the company’s relentless quest to build a better explorer yacht, with the new project coming as an evolution of the 60 model which debuted the Mark Richards designed era of models with V-warp technology hull in 2017. The Grand Banks 62 is to be standard powered by twin Volvo 900hp with line shaft propulsion for a top speed up to 30 knots. Alternatively the same engines can be offered with IPS pod drives for an extra one knot of speed but less range at 27 knots, and Grand Banks also offering the 1000hp Volvo engines as optional. In both line shafts and pods propulsion set up the Grand Banks 62 engines are mounted at midships. If adventures lead you farther over the horizon, the 62 can deliver a range up to 2,000 nautical miles with 10-percent reserve at ten knots. At twenty knots, total fuel burn will average 120 litres-per-hour representing market leading performance when compared to other similar sized explorer yachts, thanks to the running attitude of the V-Warp® Technology hull angle remains at about six degrees, keeping the maximum amount of waterline in the water for added efficiency and speed.  The Grand Banks 62 is to offer a three double guest cabins layout, with the owners stateroom being located in between the fore VIP suite and the three berth midships cabin.  The living is all located on the main deck with the Grand Banks 62 coming with an astern galley layout.  A 62 Skylounge version which encloses the helm up top, with an L-shaped dinette and a day head to starboard is also to be available.

New Model: Fairline Squadron 58

Fairline present the awaited sporty looking and innovative Squadron 58, with the first hull just finished and debuting at the 2023 Southampton boat show, Britain's prime boat show nowadays.  Initially started as a concept by Alberto Mancini in the end of 2019, the Squadron 58 was evolved and tweaked by Fairline's inhouse design team in the last two years, with hull design from Japec and Jakopin.  The Squadron 58 starts the transformative era, which the British builder seems to be embracing in a not fully convinced way in the upcoming new models, as both the drop down bulkheads balconies to both port and starboard side are on the options list.  Other interesting details in the new Squadron 58 are the clever layout enhancing diagonal bulk-head which splits the aft deck from the interior saloon astern enhancing the galley in a better way to the aft deck, and the optional glassed transom with modular settees which can be set up as to one liking; looking back, forward or sideways.  It all looks interesting but ticking the three important options; port side drop down bulkhead, glassed transom with modular seating, and the up down bathing platform on the Squadron 58, takes its competitive pricing away.  Should Fairline have standardized some of the Squadron 58 stand out features, like one of the drop-down balconies, and the glassed transom layout?  Without these features the Squadron 58 is similar to the competition that has been dominating this size in the last decades, with them she is a step above for entairtenment expansion which is the trend nowadays especially in the important North American market

Two Boaters Saved as Bayliner Goes Ablaze in Redwood California

Two boaters and a dog where saved as a thirteen meter Bayliner cruiser went ablaze off Westpoint Harbor Marina, Redwood City, California on 13:00 hours of Monday eight July.  The two men jumped off the boat as it went ablaze and where picked first by a nearby boater.  The Redwood City Fire Department responded with San Francisco Airport Fire Boat and San Francisco Fireboat 1, with the US Coast Guard coming later as the boat was eventually wrecked by the fire. The boaters and the dog were uninjured as the cause of the fire was not determined.

The Bayliner in this fire is a 1991 4588 Pilothouse, which was produced from 1989 to 1993.  The 4588 Motor Yacht was a soft evolution and replacement to the 4550 Pilothouse, most important difference being the integrated radar arch, and was replaced by the 4788 Pilothouse.
