Herbert Dahm 1929 - 2024

Herbert Dahm left for the better World on Sunday eighteen February, just a few weeks shy of his 95th birthday in his home-town of Dusseldorf. Herbert Dahm began his storied yachting career by accident. Following World War II Herbert Dahm started by selling electronics, including radios, and later developed financial software. Sailing was a passion during his free time, however, and by the sixties, he yearned to cruise the world, and set out to find a suitable sail-yacht in 1967, choosing the Dutch shipyard Jongert. Although he didn’t end up sailing the globe, Dahm found something else, spending the next three decades as the builder’s marketing and sales representative. It simultaneously led to him building five Jongerts for his own use. The most famous of his Jongert's was s/y Inspiration from 1985, which then became Jongert's successful 2200s semi-series, and which he ultimately owned till 2020.  Designed by Ron Holland the first 2200s had a few revolutions from a transom garage with a hydraulically lowering hatch that became a swim platform, and a custom bilge tunnel stowing her racing sails, preserving the interior while permitting quick access to them when wanted. Arguably, Inspiration was the first cruiser-racer in her size range, a novel concept at the time. Even as a sailor, though, Dahm loved motoryachts, too, taking delivery of Benetti's Classic 115 My Way in 2000. The international yachting community became accustomed to seeing Dahm attend yacht shows with his Benetti and her unusual tender, True Love. True Love was a Jongert, stowing on the sundeck. Dahm further had a four-decade run as the owner of Dahm International. Under his leadership, the company expanded beyond Germany into Monaco and Spain. Additionally, it added services such as yacht management and refit management to its roster. Although he sold the business in the late 1990s, he stepped back into it in 2006 to better serve clients, selling it again in 2014, at age 85, staying on as honorary president. He finally retired for good just last year, making the announcement during the Düsseldorf boat show in 2023, a show he co-founded in 1969.  In his last parts of his life Herbart Dahm primarily took care of the “Momentum Spa”, a wellness facility in Golzheim, Dusseldorf.

Italyure Yachts New Web Site

Italyure Yachts presents its new World wide web showroom.  Founded in 2018, Italyure original story starts in 2008 when Maurizio Marzocca is the chief designer of the Canelli brand. In 2018 a fortunate meeting between Marzocca, and business partners Raffaele Vitiello and Raffaele Donnarumma who run a boat refit and servicing business founded in 1995 near Salerno, lays the basis for Italyure.  In the first years and up till the fall of 2022, Italyure was actually called Allure Yachts.  The first project between the three Italian partners is a ten meter sub-contracted sport cruiser for a South Italian customer.  After that the basis for the first 38 model are made, with the first unit launching in April 2021, and available in three versions; Classic with line shafts, Comfort with stern drives, and Sport with outboards.   The Italyure 38 is immediately a success, with the company following 45 and 35 projects, with the 35 launched in Summer 2023, and the 45 evolving to a 50 model and scheduled to arrive in 2024.  The new Italyure web site takes you around with the following buttons; Home, About, Yacht, and Press.  Italyure is also on social media with right bottom links taking you to its Instagram, Facebook, Linkedin, and YouTube pages.

New Model: Arcadia A96

Arcadia debuted its new A96 model at the Cannes boat show in September 2023, a pocket super yacht of 29 metres in length-over-all and just short of eight metres in beam. The A96 is the next evolution from Arcadia which adds the unique features of its two product lines, huge stern terraces and easy manoeuvrable IPS propulsion system with twenty knots plus top speed typical of the Sherpa range, as well as embracing the immense volumes and sumptuously high level of services of the A line. As is always the case with Arcadia the focus on contact with nature runs deep: the yacht’s spaces merge into the surrounding panorama, while concept, external lines and onboard technology are all meticulously designed to offer total wellbeing, charting a new course for the brand. From the swim platform to the bow, the spaces flow seamlessly into one another, allowing the owner to choose between the conviviality of the main deck, a more discrete setting on the upper deck, and total privacy in the bow area. Sliding doors make for highly versatile living areas on the Main and Upper Decks, where the side and aft walls can be opened to transform these settings into open air spaces. High service standards are ensured by the separation of guest and crew flows, including a dedicated crew stairway, by the fully appointed pantry, and optionally by a second day toilet on the Upper Deck. There are five cabins: the owner’s full-beam, light-filled cabin is in the forward section of the Main Deck, while the four guest cabins are on the Lower Deck. For the interiors, the shipyard asked Igor Lobanov to privilege natural and, where possible, eco-friendly materials in a design characterized by soft lines and furnishings that have a pleasing hand feel, resulting in sleek curves and dark lacquered surfaces inspired by Art Deco. The colour palette is neutral and pale, with dark or metallic accents for contrast. A96 hull number one has three unique plus points in terms of volume, top speed up to 23 knots and sheer surface area, offering over four hundred square metres of liveable space. A lot of work went into optimizing weights, increasing structural comfort and boosting the efficiency of all the wiring and piping systems and the thermo-acoustic insulation of the engine room. The four Volvo Penta 1000hp engines with IPS pod propulsion in this unit offers easy manoeuvrability, thanks to joystick control and stability when pitching thanks to the interceptors and the satellite dynamic positioning system. The shallow draught and compact engine size mean that A96 can cruise in practically any waters. Thanks to collaboration with Volvo Penta and Garmin, hull one is also equipped with the most advanced port manoeuvring systems. Volvo based in Sweden supplied the Assisted Docking system that facilitates mooring operations, ensuring maximum safety in even the most demanding conditions. Finally Arcadia A96 can be fitted with the optional Silent Mode system rated over 100kWh and powered in part by solar panels, which guarantees up to nine hours of onboard life in silent mode, while the air-conditioning in the cabins is very quiet and ensures a uniform temperature in the various areas. Waveless Stab fins from CMC Marine round out the range for optimum comfort both under way and at anchor.

Fire Destroys Four Yachts in Antalya Yacht Yard

A big fire which started just after 1900 hours of Saturday tenth February in the Antalya free zone has burned down two yachts, and destroyed two other currently under construction.  Antalya fire fighting squads responded to the fire with fifteen vehicles, with cooling efforts still ongoing up till 21:00 local time.  The fire started in-front of U4 Marine and Interiors, which according to Google-Maps would mean that this is the Gree-Naval Yachts and or the Naval Yachts to it's right.  No one was injured in the fire, with a thirty meter super yacht which was stored in the shed during the fire reported a total loss.
As of this time we have no information what the yachts involved in this fire are, including the two under-construction which burned down.  If someone has any information what the yachts are feel free to get in touch with PowerYacht.

New Model: Vanquish VQ115 Veloce

Vanquish Yachts proudly presents the launch of the very first VQ115 at the shipyard in the Netherlands, the largest member of the VQ family as yet.  The VQ115 is one of the world’s fastest aluminium super sport yacht with conventional engines. To achieve the desired power output, Vanquish Yachts has installed three MTU 2650hp engines backed up by surface drives and a design that was taken as the starting point for this speed machine.  The narrow hull has been developed to optimize comfort and performance levels and increase efficiency at top speeds. Twin Seakeeper stabilizers will safeguard comfort at all speeds on this smart synthesis of a sport boat and luxury yacht. Outdoor entertainment options abound on the VQ115 Veloce with an expansive foredeck, large aft deck and flybridge sunbathing area.   A large tender bay will house a VQ16, lifted by a hydraulic loading platform, while a second VQ11 tender is  located in a second garage to starboard, also home to a live bait tank, paddleboards, sea bobs and other toys.  The flybridge has been superbly integrated within a distinctive exterior profile, part of a pure design with clean lines and the elegant, instantly recognizable Vanquish look.  The main deck saloon of the first VQ115 is fully tailored to the owner’s wishes with movable furniture to allow flexibility of occasion and time of day.  Office space is included for when work calls, there is a neat pantry with its own cocktail bar, plus a day head to keep the lower deck private. Stairs rise to the sport flybridge above while the aft door opens fully to create a unified space with the aft deck: matching floors will ensure continuity between the outdoor and indoor spaces. The lower deck features a more extensive galley and a U-shaped seating area in a country kitchen style. Accommodations include a full-beam master suite, a VIP and a guest cabin, all with their own bathrooms. Project: ISA Yachts Gran Turismo 80M

ISA Yachts, a brand of Palumbo Superyachts, is delighted to announce that the new project Future, ISA Gran Turismo 80 metres, under construction at the Palumbo Superyachts shipyard in Ancona, is taking shape with the steel hull nearing completion. The vessel was sold in July this year and will be delivered in 2027. Team for Design – Enrico Gobbi, who penned the exterior lines, will also be responsible for the interior design. The naval architecture will be completed by Palumbo Superyachts’ in-house team. ISA GT 80 is a sporty coupé with sinuous lines that breaks down the boundaries between indoors and out to create a unique and sophisticated fil rouge. The studied contrast between the hull colour, in steel grey with charcoal details, and the minimal windows confers an even slender appearance to the project and emphasizes its horizontal element. The sky-lounge housing the wheelhouse looks like set back so as not to break the slender line and to emphasize the distinctive ISA arch, here even more dynamic, which connects all the decks. Forward on the main deck, we find the infinity pool connected to the owner cabin via a lit up path with great scenic impact. The owner cabin is a true glasshouse, where the most unobtrusive uprights give centre stage to the opening floor-to-ceiling windows enhancing the sense of continuity between indoors and out. Donovan Shead 1936 - 2024

Donovan 'Don' Shead left for the better World on Saturday third February, peacefully passing away at the age of 87, surrounded by his family.  Don Shead was born May six 1936, in Birmingham, Britain's most far away city to the sea.  His father Henry Shead, a mechanical engineer with passion for boats both sail and power, will pass his passions to Don at a young age, taking him to sail dinghy racing first on the lake and then at twelve years of age to Cowes, what will become his adoptive town into the years.  Both places will play an important role to Don Shead; Birmingham the UK motor city will give the passion for engines, while Cowes expands the love for the water.  Don raced his first powerboat race in 1961 with a loaned boat, and a year later purchases his own race boat.  In 1967 coming from his racing experience, and a natural design and engineering talent, Don architects his first boat, a six meter speed boat which with him on the helm will come second in the Paris six hours race.  This boat will be produced as the Avenger 21, and is followed by the Avenger 34 which will win the Round Britain race of the same year. With this Don Shead launches his career as naval architect and fast hull specialist, receiving two request for two Class Three hulls, and a Camper and Nicholson 27 meter super yacht on his first year in business.  The year of change for Don Shead comes in 1968 when his designed 25 foot single engine wood build Telstar with Tony Sopwith on the helm wins the Cowes race in rough sea conditions.  A year later in 1969 Don will present himself to Cowes with the first Miss Enfield, built of alumimium and just completed before the race starts.  Unfortunately for Miss Enfield after seventy nautical miles in first place she will retire due to engine problems.  A year later the one meter longer Miss Enfield II will win the Cowes race with Tony Sopwith again on the helm.  With Tony retiring from racing, Don will return to race helming Miss Enfield II himself, winning Cowes again, and then the Naples and Viareggio races, while a sister-boat driven by Franco Castoldi also takes line honors in Santa Margherita in 1974.  Don Shead will retire from racing in 1974 when an accident during a race will injure his back, making a one surprise come back in 1981 at Viareggio, where he places second.  Don's Italian race success in the early seventies get's the admiration of Italians Attilio Petroni and Francesco Cosentino, who will commission him a full racing boat.  This will be the 38 foot mono-hull to be build in alumimium by CUV; Cantieri Uniti Viareggio, an alloy subcontractor, and finished by long standing yacht building family Picchiotti. Fifteen of the CUV Picchiotti's are reported build, six 41's, and nine 38.  With the CUV 38 Consentino will win the Class One World Championship held in Argentina in 1978, a feat the CUV Shead hull will do two other times in 1982 and 84.  The Don Shead designed Italian build CUV was the first to break the US hulls dominion of the Class One World Championship after fourteen years from the debut of the racing formula in 1964. Unknown to many is that Don Shead also designed some sail yachts, and a windsurf which set a speed record in the mid eighties.  Miss Enfield II was also revolutionary for its signature wrap around windscreen which gave crew better safety and protection, a design feature Don Shead introduced on the Halmatic DS110 which launched in 1968 and was produced till 72 in 28 hulls.  In 1978 Don Shead will join Sunseeker debuting with the 28 Offshore model, and from their on doing all the designs from five up to 37 meters and till 2007 when he will sell his business to the Poole builder bosses Robert and John Braithwaite, remaining as a consultant until stepping down due to ill health.  Out of tens of models for Sunseeker's a note is deserved on the 34 XPS Portofino which debuted in 1983, and the Tomahawk 37 from 1987, both of these being based on the legendary CUV 38 hull, with the former winning the Round Britain 1984 in the CX Class, and placing fifth overall.  Apart Sunseeker and the mentioned Avenger's, CUV, and Halmatic, Don Shead designed boats and yachts for Australian Motor Yachts, Broooke, Cammenga, Camper and Nicholson, Devonport, Feadship, Lavagna Admiral, Mefasa, Palmer Johnson, Picchiotti, Souter, Tecnomarine, and Viudes.

Three Boats Destroyed by Fire in Piombino

Three boats where destroyed by fire at the Marina Archipelago Toscano in Piombino, to the South of Livorno, with the blaze starting at 0830 on the morning of first February. The fire is reported to have started in the middle motorboat and then jumped to a flybridge cruiser on its starboard side, and a sailing yacht on its port side. Fire fighters and the local coast guard office rushed to the scene, controlling the blaze first, so it does not jump to other boats, and then turning it off. No one was injured as the boats where all reported unattended, although all three boats are fully burned and a wreck.  The cause of the fire is under investigation.
The boats in this fire are a Zuccon designed 1993 to 1997 produced Ferretti 120 Fly to left of the photo, with the sailing yacht to right being a Feeling.  So far I cannot picture the boat in the middle, which looks to be Italian made and from the eighties.

Classic Boat Crashes Into Rockingham Jetty

A classic eleven meter flybridge cruiser crashed, and then partly sank into Rockingham Yacht Club Jetty, in Rockingham, Western Australia on the late night of 31 January.  The cause of the accident are not reported but chats on social media are saying the captain collided with the jetty for a couple times, before eventually hitting bottom, and then partly sinking grounding the cruiser in the spot.  The classic flybridge cruiser was still in the same spot, partly sank and tied up to Rockingham Jetty as at ninth February.
The classic boat in this sinking looks to be a Mariner 38 Mk.I as build in the seventies.  Mariner Boats in Australia was founded by Bill Barry-Cotter in 1969 who he will sell in 1978, to then found Riviera in 1980 and then sell again in 2002, to then establish his third boat building brand Maritimo, which today he manages with his sons.

Need for Speed Is Back

In the eighties a challenge started out between a few yacht builders to make big and ultra fast yachts in the market.  Italcraft launched it's challenge with the M78, a 21 meters flybridge motor yacht presented in 1985 which reached 58 knots.  Alfamarine responded some years later with the two meters smaller one-off made 65 flybridge model from 1991, which with triple 1000hp engines and surface drives reached a top speed of 64 knots during a light test run, four knots more over it's declared top speed of sixty knots.

Interestingly while both these yachts received a lot off attention at the time, the success was not big, with Italcraft selling only two units of the M78, and then revising the platform for the slower and similar looking C70 and then reused for the 70 Drago in the noughties. While Alfamarine made only one unit of the 65, with the hull of that one coming from the 55 as designed by Franco Harrauer, and then used also for the 58 and 60 models.  For a time the speed in sport yachts settled and even the fast offerings from successful sport yacht builders like AB Yachts, Baia, MagnumOtam, or Pershing stopped in around the fifty knots mark.

Thirty years later the need for speed is back with new arrival Bolide Yachts and its first 80 model, setting new high unimaginable numbers for a 24 meter super sport yacht.  The Bolide 80 not only goes beyond sixty knots, but reaches a top speed of 73 knots, equivalent to 84 mph.  These are speeds a super fast thirteen meter centre console weighing in at about ten tons with six Mercury racing outboards reaches. Incredible speeds for this project by Brunello Acampora, and even more outstanding when you think that the closest production yacht above 24 meters, the AB Yachts 100 with the Superfast option is thirteen knots behind.

Is the need for speed back?  Are we heading into a new super sport yacht speed race?  Just as much as I would like it, this is difficult to happen, and like those Italcraft and Alfamarine models from the eighties found out, the hyper fast is and will remain a niche. It is a small niche which has its crowd, and many admire it, but when it comes to signing the dotted line it remains something for the few.  For now, well done to Brunello Acampora, it will be interesting to see if Bolide Yachts will have a challenger worth of note in the future.

Two Yachts Destroyed by Fire in Ancorhage Marina, Baltimore

Two yachts were destroyed by fire at Anchorage Marina, to the South East of Baltimore at around nine o'clock morning time of Wednesday 31 January.  Baltimore City Fire Department rushed to the scene to extinguish the fire.  The fire is reported to have started on the flybridge of the smaller thirteen meter boat located on the B-dock which with the fire burned its mooring ropes and left its berth, and then touched a sixteen meter motor yacht located opposite it's berth.  The smaller boat eventually sank, while the bigger yacht was mostly burned with the fire and a total loss, but still floating.  No one was injured in the accident, although the smaller boat was a liveaboard for one person and his dog, who managed to get off board.
The boat above which started the fire is a nineties Taiwan build Lien Hwa 42 Aft Cabin, while the other yacht which burned down is a Garroni designed Prestige 550 Flybridge, produced from 2012 to 2017 in 170 units.

Three Men Rescued from Capsized Sea Ray Near Albany

Three men where rescued when there seven meter Sea Ray sport cruiser capsized and then partly sank in rough seas off the Albany Coast, South West Australia on 09:40 morning time of Wednesday 31 January.  Police received the EPIRB call and with assistance coming by the Albany Sea Rescue who retrieved the men and then transported them to Emu Point boat ramp before 13:00 hours with St. John WA and police doing the assistance.  The man were reportedly fishing over night when they entered into a difficult situation in rough four meter waves seas, with the Sea Ray sport cruiser capsizing and then partly sinking.  One of the man a forty year old was taken to Albany Health Campus for observation, but all three men came off with minor injuries.  The capsized Sea Ray eventually washed out in Peaceful Bay about forty nautical miles from the location the three men where rescued, with the boat found holding suspicious packaging and the Police opening a new investigation on the case.
The Sea Ray in this sinking is a 240 Sundancer model as produced from 2011 to 2014.  The 240 Sundancer came as a replacement to the Sea Ray 230 Sundancer, with the model replaced by the 265 Sundancer in 2014.
