Classic Riva Sinks in Sapri

A ten meter classic Riva flybridge motor cruiser sank while in her berth in Sapri yacht marina, to the South of Naples in Italy on the morning of Wednesday 22 February.  The Riva classic cruiser was unattended at the time of sinking and according to some reports had the bilge pumps going on for quite some days, before energy ended and power faded which led to its sinking.
The Riva in this sinking is a Portofino 34 as designed by Giorgio Bariliani and produced from 1976 to 1979 in 38 units.  The Riva Portofino 34 shared hull with the longer produced more accommodation focused Summertime 34, offering a nice mix of sportfish inspired looks to those of a sport cruiser.

AB Yachts present the first unit of the 787, a hard-top sport yacht of just over 24 meters in overall length, and currently the smallest model from the Italian builder.  Featuring an unusual design language from the Tuscany Italian firm specialized in hard-top jet propelled yachts and super yachts, the 787 presents itself with a minimal axe bowed modern exterior, details which we see AB Yachts embrace for the first time.  As any AB Yachts the 787 is a fully custom to order build, put pen to paper in 2019 and completed in late 2021. AB Yachts has given no details about the interior of hull one, with the builder saying this is fully  made custom to order, and crew accommodation for four persons in two cabins.  The first AB Yachts 787 was powered with triple Man 2000hp engines and jet propulsion giving top speeds up to 56 knots and a cruise of fifty.

Project: Delta 48 Coupe

Ever since Delta Powerboats was introduced in Sweden in 2003, the name has been associated with efficient hydrodynamics, authentic craftsmanship and advanced technology integrations. The new Delta 48 Coupé is no exception, rather the ambition to capture the very essence of sleek, versatile and energy efficient sports cruiser made of carbon fibre the Swedish name has build its reputation on. As the latest result of the Lar Modin and Mannerfelt design partnership, the 48 benefits from the experience of previous projects and combines features from both the Open and Coupé series.  The Delta 48 Coupe will feature generous deck arrangements allowing guests to enjoy multiple exterior lounges and sun beds or seek shelter within an enclosed saloon with panoramic all around views. Sliding aft and side doors blur the boundaries between the inner and outer decks and due to the large electrical roof top the 48 easily adapts to changing weather. Below deck the interior accommodates six guests across three cabins where the owner occupies a forward master stateroom with generous storage and an en-suite bathroom.  Delta 48 Coupé features an all new twin stepped-bottom, designed to reduce friction, deliver speed and a consistent plane with less pitching. In the construction, only advanced carbon fibre composite materials are used, making the hull strong, stiff and impact resistant and keeps the weight of the vessel low, which further reduces engine load and  fuel consumption. The Delta 48 Couple is to be powered with either twin Volvo 440hp inboard sterndrives diesels, and or Mercury 600hp outboards petrol gas.  Estimated top speeds are up to 45 knots and a cruise of 32 giving only three litres per nautical mile from the twin Volvo diesels.

Sunseeker Aground in Honolua Bay Hawaii

A 28 meter Sunseeker super yacht titled m/y Nakoa ended aground in Honolua Bay, on the island of Maui, Hawaii at 06:45 hours of Monday 20 February morning.  The yacht reportedly broke its mooring lines as it was preparing to leave the bay.  Nakoa was also reported pumping out some fuel discharge in the protected area, a day later, also because the bilge pumps where left on.  Since then the bilge pumps has been turned off by the crew.  The company which owns Nakoa, Noelani Yacht Charters who also operates another smaller 23 meter Sunseeker said the accident was not due to negligence but unfortunate circumstances.
After a couple of salvage operation attempts, Nakoa was removed from the area on Sunday March fifth, only for the operation to be a bad success with the yacht sinking during towing in a depth of 300 meters a couple nautical miles away from where it grounded.
M/y Nakoa is a 2004 Sunseeker 94 Yacht as designed by Jon Braithwaite and Don Shead and produced from 2002 to 2006 in thirteen units.  The Sunseeker 94 Yacht was replaced by the little bit smaller 90 Yacht.

Pearl New Web Site

British boat builder Pearl Motor Yachts presents its new web site. Founded in 1998 by Iain Smallridge Pearl started up by developing a line based on the Northern, British looking motor cruiser featuring the master aft cabin typical of the classic UK design. Pearl started up by presenting first a 45 model in the Southampton show of 1999, which was followed in the next four years by a smaller 41, and 43. In the year 2000 Pearl moved to Stratford in Avon, and in 2002 Tony Whittaker, a professional engineer, renowned RYA instructor, and boat owner took the helm of the company.  This ownership change took Pearl to the next level and family Whittaker commissioned designs for the next model to renowned designers Bill Dixon, and Evan K. Marshall who presented the ground breaking 55 at the Southampton show of 2003, this model later evolved into the 60 becoming Pearl's best selling yacht. Today Pearl is World wide distributed and builds four Motor and Super Yachts from eighteen to 29 meters designed by Bill Dixon outside and Kelly Hoppen inside.  The Pearl range starts with the 62, 72 launched in 2022, the upcoming 82 project which replaces the 80, and the 95 flagship model launched in 2018. Three Saved from Sinking Flybridge Boat Off Key West

A twelve meter flybridge cruiser with three persons onboard sank while cruising nine miles North off Fleming Key, an island off the North West corner of Key West, Florida on the early morning of Saturday eighteen February 2023. US Coast Guard responded to the sinking call, saving the three persons, with one of the persons reporting a head laceration injury and transferred to medical services when on land.  The cause of incident is under investigation, and it is not reported if the flybridge cruiser was salvaged or not.
The boat in this sinking is a Sessa Fly 40 as designed by Christian Grande and produced from 2012 to 2018.  Sessa was a brand in expansion in the end of the noughties decade, launching its first flybridge yacht the Fly 54 in 2009, which was followed by smaller 45 and then the 40.  The Fly 40 was evolved and replaced by the Fly 42.

New Launch: Van Der Valk 33.00 M Hull no WV0133

Van der Valk delivered the Raised Pilothouse 33-metre Blue Jeans to her owners at the end of 2022, its second in size model and flagship of the RP range as introduced in 2014 and so far launched in six units. After handover at the Van der Valk shipyard in the Netherlands, this custom build Raised Pilothouse 33 meters superyacht has cruised through Belgium, France and the UK to London. Designed by Guido de Groot the exterior style is closely aligned with the request for high ceilings in the interior, which rise to almost 2.5 metres in the lounge. The yacht’s sleek profile features lots of exterior glass, including for the bulwarks. Her blue hull paint was developed with Alexseal while de Groot used colours, surfaces and lights to remove any hint of white. Al fresco highlights include balconies both sides of the main deck and a retractable dive board on the flybridge. The anchor windlasses are hidden within the raised bow to free up room on the foredeck for a recessed chill-out zone with pop-up table. This cool feature typifies the detailed design and engineering which went into this project. The interior features an intricate fusion of Northern European and Asian styles, some remarkable lighting displays and a wide variety of materials. These include liquid metal walls, copper accents and reconstituted teak in small wooden trims on the walls and ceilings. The master stateroom features rare Lapis Lazuli Blue marble while other fine stones include Nero Marquina and Fior di Bosco in the dining area and White Carrara in the saloon. The overall layout entirely reflects the owner’s preferences for everyday use within a multifunctional, multigenerational concept. Blue Jeans is ideal for large groups on day trips and the kind of extended stays onboard involved in her maiden voyage. Blue Jeans carries a fully-custom bare aluminium tender placed sideways in her own large garage. This set-up generated space for a large engine room with twin MTU 2600hp which give a top speed up to 28 knots.

Project: Leopard 28m

Things are getting in motion at the revived Leopard Yachts, with this 28m project starting construction in 2022.  Leopard returned back to life in 2021 acquired by Seven Stars after Paolo Picchiotti blessed the acquisition of the legendary name, which was a sub name of Cantieri Navali Arno introduced in 1973 to the avant garde Poalo Caliari designs introduced in that year, which eventually became permanent.  The Leopard 28m comes from a design of Andrea Ramasco, known for his work for Amer yachts, and naval architecture courtesy of Optima from La Spezia.  Permare is helping in the construction of this first Leopard 28m, with the new ownership having high hopes in following the success of the Paolo Caliari 27m Sport model sold in 48 units in a sixteen year production run from 1995 to 2011 which this model replaces.  The Leopard 28m will feature a sport bridge design, and a sleek profile full of windows.  Leopard is not giving any details for the interior of the 28m, although sport yachts in this size usually have a four double cabins layout with full beam owners stateroom, and two crew cabins for three or four persons.  The Leopard 28m is to be powered by triple Volvo 1000hp and IPS pod drives propulsion who should give an estimated top speed up to 32 knots and a cruise of 28.  The first unit is expected to go in the water this 2023 year.

Project: Ocea Commuter 33

Ocea present the project for the Commuter 33, which at 33 metres is the smallest of the Commuter family of yachts, which features two other larger 40 and 50 meter models.  Designing a transoceanic super yacht based on commuter boats designed for short trips on a river was no easy feat! The New York commuters in use at the beginning of the 20th century only crossed the East River, not the Pacific Ocean. However, one of the very first Ocea Commuters, Abely Wheeler, a 32.50-metre boat completed in 2004, has travelled around the world.  The Ocea Commuter 33 is designed in house and will offer a four double cabins arrangement below decks, while crew accommodation is for four persons. The Ocea Commuter is estimated to reach speeds up to eighteen knots, with a fast cruise of fourteen, and a long range of four thousand nautical miles possible at ten knots.

New Model: Azimut Grande 36M

Just a year later to the launch of the largest ever Azimut, the 38 meter Trideck flagship which has so far sold in eighteen units and deliveries going into 2026 the famous Italian name launch a two meter smaller Grande 36M, which is also a replacement to the 2017 launched Grande 35M produced till 2021 in nineteen hulls.  With only two meters smaller to the big Trideck the Grande 36M is a different second in size model, with designer Alberto Mancini giving sleeker lines, also because unlike the flagship she is a two deck with raised pilot house design.  It is interesting how the Grande 36M though looks sleek and sporty, thanks to the clever deck integration by Alberto Mancini, doing all this without losing space.  This is also happening also for the extensive use of carbon fibre for the super structure, which is part of a triumvirate high technology features going into the Grande 36M. The other two being its low emissions D2P displacent2planning hull shape by Pierluigi Ausonio and Azimut research and design which reduces fuel consumption by up to 30%, and an innovative air exchange treatment system that continually refreshes and treats the interior environments.  The Azimut Grande 36M offers two interior layouts, with this being about a private dining area on the top deck behind the pilot station or in the lower deck.  The cabin  arrangement is identical in both versions with a five double cabins layout including which is a master stateroom on the forward wide body part of the main deck.  The Azimut Grande 36M is powered by twin MTU 2200hp as standard or optional 2400hp engines with these giving top speeds up to 24 knots.  Azimut has so far sold eight hulls of the Grande 36M with deliveries going into 2025, with the yacht making its first appearance at the Cannes and Genoa fall 2022 boat shows.

Invictus starts the 2023 year by presenting its second in size new TT420 model at the Dusseldorf boat show.  An announced model at the fall of 2022, the TT420 comes from Christian Grande, the designer who has thus far designed all Invictus, and is all about offering the TT460 qualities in a smaller package.  It is in reality a big competitor to the current Invictus flagship in exterior spaces, offering a similar layout, with the difference being felt much more inside in the accommodation area below decks.  Like the TT460 the TT420 is all about exterior living which spans the whole twelve meters length of this sport cruiser, and is easy to navigate thanks to the walk around deck, split only by one step forward, and the option of two port and starboard drop down balconies which extend the space. The main deck welcomes you aft with a central sun-pad which also features a garage for a tender over two meters in size underneath, further forward  is a dinette with  opposite looking settees and space for six to eight persons, followed by a huge galley wet-bar, and then the triple settee helm station. Project: Pearl 82

Pearl present the project for a new 82 model, a replacement for the 80 which launched in 2017 and marked the brands entry into 24 meters plus super yachts and sold over ten units in five year production run.  The Pearl 82 is a completely new design which also features a wider hull and a raised pilot house.  Designed by the usual Pearl team of Bill Dixon for exterior and Kelly Hoppen for the décor, the 82 thanks to the raised pilot house will feature a forward full body main deck which fits an owners stateroom.  Thanks to this the lower deck features four cabins giving the Pearl 82 a five cabins at just 25 meters of length.  The Pearl 82 may be outfitted with either of two aft deck arrangements; Riviera or Veranda to match different owners’ lifestyles right on the sea. The Riviera layout places aft facing sun pads behind the table and sofa setup, out under the sun, while the Veranda layout offers versatility with the possibility to pivot the seating between picnic and private patio orientations, always keeping the sea in sight.  Regardless of the owner’s choice, the bulwarks can fold down like wings, expanding and opening the cockpit to the environment. A cleverly hidden garage offers a space for a 3.5 meter jet rib or similar a jet ski size and plenty of water toys.  The Pearl 82 is powered by standard Man 1650hp engines and or optional 1900 or 2000hp engines.  Top speed with the standard engines is 29 knots with the largest 2000hp give a 33 max.

Stolen Boat Capsizes in Columbia Oregon

A fourteen meter flybridge cruiser titled m/y Sand Piper which was stolen from West Mooring Basin in Astoria, capsized and was rolled over by eight meters waves while in distress in the Columbia River mouth, Oregon on Friday third February at around 13:00 hours.  On the first May-Day call the US Coast Guard dispatched the life motor boat Cape Flounder which found that a boat rescue was too dangerous.  Seeing this the coast guard called for helicopter assistance who sent a coast guard swimmer in the water, saving the thief just seconds before the flybridge cruiser capsized. The 35 year old man was later in the evening arrested for theft and three other charges.
The stolen and capsized flybridge cruiser in this accident is an Ocean Alexander 440 Motor Yacht, as produced from 1990 till 1999 and based on the 420/440 Sundeck's with a sleeker super structure.  The Ocean Alexander 440 Motoryacht was replaced by the 450 Classico Sedan.

Flybridge Cruiser Collides In Panama City Bridge Florida

A not attended nine meter in length flybridge cruiser dragged anchor and collided, and then ended stuck in the 4th Street Bridge at Panama City, Florida on the afternoon of Thursday second February.  The flybridge cruiser was reportedly anchored in Massalina Bayou, and dragged anchor up until it collided and stuck to the bridge.  Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission officials and US Coast Guard responded to the collision, and were quick on the scene to asses the situation, and reported that the bridge sustained no damage.  Following the inspection they advised the ownership to remove and secure the boat.
The boat in this collision is a Trojan F-32 Sedan as produced from 1973 to 1991 in 2700 units.  The F-32 was also available in the Express version, and the Sportsfisherman with a lightly different super structure.

Project: Ferretti InFYnito 90

Announced in 2022 Ferretti shows the details of the first InFYnito project, a super yacht of just under 26 meters in length over all set to debut later on in this 2023 year.  Its the third in Ferretti's history that the name deviates from its traditional flybridge line, the first was in early nineties with the HP high performance line which only featured one 48 model, the second was with the Altura aft cabin yacht presented in 2005 with the 690 and then added with an 840 in 2008.  Ferretti InFYnito is all about extending life on board, an explorer inspired superyacht where the dialogue between interior and exterior gives a feeling of total fulfilment. The new range, which contains the brand’s initials FY in its name, introduces a style that gives shape to owners new needs: seamless contact with the surrounding environment, more sustainable materials and navigation, custom detailing, and a direct link with the sea and the sky. The key innovation is visual continuity between interiors and exteriors, connecting the yacht to the horizon as never before. This is how the experience becomes infinite: with no more limits and boundaries, the view sweeps far and wide and navigation is more authentic and personal. The understated design is clean and balanced, expressing a more natural and sustainable approach to cruising increasingly embraced by owners. Ferretti Yachts InFYnito is the result of collaboration between the Strategic Product Committee led by Mr. Piero Ferrari and the Ferretti Group Engineering Department. The exterior design and hulls are by Filippo Salvetti, while the interiors are the work of Ideaeitalia. The first model in the new range to debut in 2023 is Ferretti Yachts InFYnito 90. With a length of just under 27 metres and hull length under 24 metres and therefore classified as a recreational craft with CE certification.  A maximum beam of seven meters, the yacht is designed to give cruising enthusiasts an incomparable new experience. The outdoor and indoor settings blend into one another in an unparalleled continuum, creating spaces that can be customized and are more generous than the standard in the category. With over 100 square metres of open-air living spaces which is about double to the segment average and over 140 square metres of interiors over 25% to the usal, including a main deck and a sky-lounge featuring particularly impressive volumes, the new Ferretti Yachts InFYnito 90 is a clear stand-out in the market. Owners can also choose between different layouts for each deck, ranging from open-plan spaces to more formal settings reserved for day and night time privacy, offering an experience that can be fully customized according to personal needs. Ferretti InFYnito 90 is fitted with standard twin Man 1550hp and or optional 1800hp engines.  The larger engines give the InFYnito 90 a top speed of 22 knots and a cruise of seventeen, while a range of 1,200 nautical miles is possible at an economy cruising speed of twelve knots. Ferretti Yachts InFYnito is a range inspired by explorer vessels, boats designed for long voyages and to welcome guests in total comfort, giving the owner that “just like home” feeling in the intimacy, safety and relaxing atmosphere of a space that embodies this concept. The new range will also introduce F.S.E.A. Ferretti Sustainable Enhanced Architecture to the industry, a package of environmentally friendly cruising solutions. They include a solar roof that generates electricity and charges a lithium battery pack to power onboard services. This technology lets the owner and guests enjoy the yacht in hotel mode, creating an atmosphere of total relaxation with zero emissions everywhere on board. The choice of greener materials is also significant: ecological paints, sustainable teak, recyclable fabrics and leathers. The new range will also feature a brand new generation of ultra-high efficiency hulls, offering unprecedented levels of comfort at low speeds and fast displacement performance over twenty knots. The cruising range values are also unprecedented, allowing the owner to reach faraway destinations in total comfort and relaxation. Another key point of the new range is the development of the Main Deck, where the view sweeps seamlessly from interior to exterior and from bow to stern. The design of this space is one of the Ferretti InFYnito’s most distinctive and iconic features, offering a ground-breaking all season terrace that apart being spectacular is inviting, atmospheric, hidden from prying eyes at the quayside and functional at sea in all weather conditions.

New Generation Yachts

Yachts change, and evolve every year, and at a point if looking in a decade time frame the evolution starts to look the revolution. An evolution which today sees the revolution in endless window surfaces and different use of space especially in what regards to yachts in the size of fifteen to 24 meters.

So what has changed.  Surely main decks have had a total evolution and now have become big open spaces uniting dining, galley, helm station, and lounging.  Up to ten years ago galley used to be totally or partly separated, and same for helm stations.

While the window evolution started at the mid-end nineties, in the last couple years we had important turning points, with windows now becoming ceiling to floor, filling the main deck with every minimum light available.  This change has turned the living of the interiors located on the main deck from a cozy private interior to an open one, filled with light and views. It is interesting to see if owners are happy about this.  Sure in an anchorage these windows give you the best view.  But when in a marina where boats are a hand away from each other, does it work as intended.
