A 21 meter Azimut motor yacht with eight passengers went ablaze and eventually sank in Long Island Sound off Branford Shore on the morning of Thursday 12 August. The Long Island Sound sector Coast Guard received a May-Day call for assistance, but on arriving on the scene the eight passenger onboard the motor yacht where already assisted by civilians boats in the vicinity. The Branford fire department dispatched three fire fighting boats, unfortunately to no avail as the yacht burned down and eventually sank. All the eight passengers onboard the yacht where unharmed.
The Azimut in this accident is a 70 Sea Jet model, a three or four double cabins plus two crew cabin motor yacht. The 70 Sea Jet designed by Stefano Righini was given this name for its spacious jet water craft garage aft. Produced from 1996 to 2001 the 70 Sea Jet was powered by twin MTU 1200hp engines. The 70 Sea Jet evolved into the more spacious and longer 74 Solar in 2002.
