Six Rescued as Classic Boat Sinks Off Queensland Australia

Six boaters where rescued as an eleven meter flybridge cruiser started sinking and then capsized, near Scawfell Island, 32 nautical miles to the East of Mackay, Queensland, Australia at 15:10 of Wednesday 23 November.  CQ Rescue responded first with a helicopter, who were followed by the Mackay's Volunteer Marine Rescue who picked the boaters from Scawfell Island.  None of the crews had injuries as they were inspected by paramedics. The owner is now informed to salvage the capsized traditional cruiser, which is partly sunk by Scawfell Island.  The causes of the sinking are not reported, but the captain reported to have encountered difficulty in rough seas.
The classic boat in this sinking is a Hatteras 41 Convertible Yacht Fish as designed by Jack Hargrave and produced from 1960 to 1963.  The 41 Convertible Yacht Fish was Hatteras first model, and becoming a legendary quality name into its years.  The 41 Convertible Yacht Fish was replaced by the flush fore deck 41 Convertible Series I.

Project: Absolute 52 Fly

Absolute present the project for a new 52 Fly, which follows the basis of design as launched by the 47 Fly model in 2019, followed by the 60 Fly in 2021, and the 56 Fly in 2022. The 2023 Absolute 52 Fly is the second generation 52 following a same launched model in 2013, with this new project being based on a completely new hull which is some twenty centimetres wider, and about sixty centimetres longer to the mark one. The Absolute 52 Fly follows all the latest concepts of the Italian builder, from a glass cockpit aft deck, to fore-deck lounge dinette, and the shear line drop which creates uninterrupted views from the interior of the main deck.  The interior of the second generation Absolute 52 Fly sees an astern galley main deck layout, with a lower deck offering three double cabins of which is a largest in the category owners stateroom forward, and a guest VIP suite at midships.  All of this comes without sacrificing a third guest cabin as even this comes with standard two in line berths.  The 52 Fly is to be powered by twin Volvo 600hp with IPS pod drives, Absolute propulsion of choice since 2007.

Azimut Yachts New Web Site

Azimut Yachts presents its new website. Head quartered in Italy Turin, with other construction sites located in Viareggio and Fano in Italy, and in Itajai in Brazil, Azimut continues to make innovation in design of the yachts its priority.  Azimut was started by Paolo Vitelli in 1969, who  retires in 2022 to give leading duties to his daughter Giovanna Vitelli.  Poalo Vitelli starts Azimut as a sailing charter company in 1969, two years after in 1971 he becomes a boat dealer for Dutch builder Amerglass and Moody sailing yachts.  In 1975 Azimut starts the humble beginnings as a boat builder with the AZ43 Bali, a flybridge cruiser as designed by Bernard Olesinski with a lot of input coming from Vitelli for the design.  The first few units of the Azimut 43 Bali are joint built with the Dutch Amerglass, but production is moved in Italy in the first year and built by sub-contractors most notably Marchi from Venice.  Sub-contracting its builds will mark the first years of Azimut as a yacht builder.  The first Azimut is followed by the 32 Targa in 1977, a huge success for Azimut sold in 197 units in a ten year production run and is also the first cruiser with an opening sunroof. This is followed by an extended 46 Bali which arrives in 1978.  Azimut goes above fifteen meters on its fifth model in 1982 when it debuts the 60 Solar flybridge yacht.  In 1983 Azimut enters super yachting with the launch of the 105 Failaka, which was also the biggest production made fiberglass yacht of the time.  The 105 Failaka is superseded by the 115 Failaka in 1988, and then in 1994 with the 118 California aka project Penthouse.  For seventeen years the one off 118 California is the largest Azimut, that is until 2011 when the 120SL is launched, this then overtook ten years later by the Grande Trideck 38m in 2021. Azimut will start to make group in 1985 as it buys bankrupt Fratelli Benetti shipyard in 1985.  In 1987 Poalo Vittelli challenges the Blue Riband with the Benetti built hull number FB204 Azimut Atlantic Challenger and designed by Pininfarina and Fiat navigation system.  In 1991 Azimut debuts frame less glass windows on its yachts, with the AZ43 Quarantatre, what is a first for a European builder, and second in the World following Carver.  In 1999 Azimut-Benetti Group becomes the World top builder of super yachts above 24 meters in size, a position the Italian yacht builder has kept every year since.  2003 marks the launch of the 68S marking an entry for Azimut to the Sports Yacht segment which today has a range from 60 up to 100 feet.  In 2009 Azimut presents the dual mode hull semi displacement 74 Magellano entering the Italian shipyard in the Explorer yacht category in its own terms. Azimut current line up has five collections; Fly, S, Grande, Magellano, Verve, and Atlantis which start from twelve meters with the 42 Verve and go up to 38 meter Trideck totaling 23 models. Azimut's new website is available in Italian and English and takes you around with the following buttons; Yachts, Find a Dealer, News and Events, Company.  Azimut has also its social media pages; Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and Linkedin with direct links located at the bottom of the page.

Juan Sastre Bernat 1937 - 2022

On Thursday 17th November 2022, Mr. Juan Sastre Bernat, founder of Menorquin Yachts and a reference in the nautical world for Menorca and the Spanish yacht building community, passed away. Coming from an auto dealership empire which he founded with his brother Jose in 1960, and at some point distributing six marques, Juan Sastre Bernat founded Astilleros Menorca and created his first range of cruisers inspired to the traditional llaüt of the island of Menorca. In 1997 Juan rebrands Astilleros Mernoca to Menorquin Yachts, a proposal that made its mark in an already consolidated market. Thanks to its success, the shipyard began its expansion in the nautical sector, becoming a competitor of major brands in the world market.  The Sastre family will sell Menorquin in 2006 to a private investment firm, with son Jose Luise founding Sasga Yachts in 2010.  Juan Sastre not only founded Menorquin Yachts, he was also a visionary who brought the traditional Menorcan fishing llaüt to the forefront and to the World nautical market. This new approach to the traditional boat, together with his sacrifice, dedication and brilliant entrepreneurship, have led to his boats being recognised in international markets, today with the Sasga Yachts brand name.  Juan Sastre Bernat was married Teresa Gardés Pons and they had three children: Basilio, José Luis and Juan Francisco.

Super Yacht Beaches in Doha Qatar

A 33 meter super yacht, titled m/y Lusail Queen ran aground on a sandy reef in Doha Qatar on the afternoon of Friday November eighteen.  The causes of the incident are not reported, but the yacht does look to have its anchor down, so it might be the yacht drifted while anchored.  Videos on social media show several persons onboard Lusail Queen working to mitigate the damage and organize a safe removal from the sandbar.
M/y Lusail Queen previously named Rayyan 1 is a 2013 Gulf Craft Majesty 105, designed inhouse and produced from 2012 till 2017 in nine units.  The Majesty 105 was replaced by the 100 model in 2018.  Lusail Queen was last sold this 2022 year.

New Model: Lynx Crossover 27

The Dutch shipyard, Lynx Yachts, has rounded off the first quarter of 2022 with a major announcement: the launch of its first 27.4-metre Crossover 27 superyacht, titled m/y Avontuur.  The first Lynx Crossover 27 hit the water on eighteen March, with this first unit of the series boasting numerous custom features in order to meet her American owner’s requirements. Crossover 27 design and layout maximises tender and toy storage to suit the needs of her outdoorsy and sporty owner, whilst still retaining her stylish superyacht appearance.  The super yachts initial layout from Lynx included four staterooms, comprising an owner’s cabin, a VIP cabin, and two twin cabins with the crew quarters located aft of the engine room. However, the owner of this first Crossover  27 opted to change this into three guest cabins and modified the crew quarters integrating into the guest space.  With the concept design and engineering taken care of in house, the vessel features exterior design from the drawing boards of the Dutch studio Bernd Weel, interiors by the French designer Franck Darnet and naval architecture by the Alkmaar-based studio Diana. Standout features on board the Crossover 27 include her large light-filled main deck saloon, a seventy-square-metre main deck which transforms easily into a spacious entertainment area once the toys launched.  The sundeck is equipped with a crane, and will house two Yamaha Wave-runners and two stand-up jet-skis. The lazaretto toy storage provides ample space for water sports equipment such as stand-up paddleboards, surfboards, canoes, scuba diving equipment and much more.  The Lynx Crossover 27 is powered by twin Cat 850hp engines reaching a maximum speed of fourteen knots, a cruise of twelve which an an impressive range of 1,800 nautical miles.

Project: Whitehaven 6100SY

Whitehaven range of signature sports yacht, presented its Sport Yacht range over a decade ago, and today the SY range is evolving again with the 6100SY project. The 6100 SY is the genesis of the Whitehaven range and this evolution is sure to surprise and delight. The first thing you will notice is the changes to the cockpit. A much-loved feature of the Whitehaven design, the cockpit on the 6100SY has seen serious upgrades to the seating which now is aft facing and converts into a day bed for additional flexibility in the space. The BBQ is now joined by an external galley station and overlooks the swim platform where you will find additional seating. In the interior, the galley is now full beam to easily service both the internal and external dining and lounge spaces. Larger architectural windows not only flood the interior with natural light yet also offer exceptional visibility from the helm. This 6100SY also sports the new fore deck seating arrangement, provided with sunbeds and seating, it is another space for family and friends to come together. Below deck there are three accommodation suites. The full beam owner’s cabin sits midships with a private ensuite. The guest suite is in the forepeak also with an ensuite and accessible as a day head from the main companion way. The final guest suite on the portside has twin beds and plenty of storage. Like all the Whitehaven the 6100SY is customisable to the individual specifications of the buyer and there is the option for the Euro edition upgrades. The Whitehaave 6100SY is to be powered by twin Volvo 1000hp with line shaft propulsion.

New Model: Fabbrica Italiana Motoscafi 470 Regina

Fabbrica Italiana Motosafi has launched its new 470 Regina at the end of Summer, presenting subsequently the product at the Cannes and Genova 2022 boat shows, which awarded the model as Best Revelation 2022, and four more orders.  Following on the foot steps of the 340 Regina, the 470 comes also from a design of Ferragni, and like the smaller sister is a mix of walk around features mixed to those of a cabin cruiser.  For this reason she is a bit unique in the market, but the 470 Regina does not stop there with modular layouts to both its aft and fore decks.  For example the foredeck of the 470 Regina transforms in three uses; sun-pad, two chaise lounge, and can also come with a small spa pool in between.  Below the Fabbrica Italiana Motoscafi 470 Regina shows again its flexible nature being available in two or three cabin versions, with both layouts offering a large full beam midships owners cabin.  The 470 Regina is powered by twin Volvo 480hp as standard or optional 600hp engines with IPS pod propulsion, with an outboard option of triple or quadruple Yamaha 425hp.  Hull one was powered by twin Volvo 600hp IPS combo reaching top speeds up to 39 knots.

Project: Estensi Targa 38 GT

Estensi present the project for the Targa 38 GT.  Designed as all Estensi by Zuccheri, the 38 GT launches the new Targa line which replaces the previous America range as the sports open line from the Italian boat builder, with the Targa offering classic traditional lines mixed with a modern super structure.  Unlike the America the first Targa takes the hull and similar lines from the down East inspired Goldstar range with the difference, at least for this first 38 GT of a Mediterrean central sun-pad open cockpit deck layout. It will be interesting if Estensi will follow this pattern with the other Goldstar models, which would see it in little time if the Italian builder wants with four additional models, considering that the tooling is nearly the same with the exception of the hard top section.  Down below the Estensi Targa 38 GT offers two layouts, that for two cabins, or an open plan layout with a large cabin and an L-shaped lounger.  The Estensi Targa 38 GT is powered by twin shaft line engines from 280 up to 400hp.

New Model: Riva 76 Bahamas Super

Launched in 2016 the Riva 76 Bahamas was an immediate success, based on the 76 Perseo hull and following the principle of the invisible C-hard-top as Riva presented a year before on the 88 Florida.  For the fall 2022 and model year 2023 onwards Riva refreshes the model to the 76 Bahamas Super.  The most visible and recognizable change is the larger hull side windows, while another one is the separate bulwark which is now also fatter.  Inside the Riva 76 Bahamas Super has also minor changes all revolving around the three guest bathrooms which have a changed layout. The Riva 76 Bahamas Super is powered by twin Man 1550hp or Man 1800hp engines, with the later option giving a top 37 knots speed.

A fifteen meter unattended Sea Ray yacht washed ashore some meters away from Northeast 16 Street, near the Hillsboro Inlet lighthouse in Pompano Beach, on Thursday ten November 2022.  The Sea Ray yacht was reported to have broken its mooring from its marina in Hillsboro Beach Inlet following Hurricane Nicole and then ended beached in the area.  The Sea Ray has created a problem for removal to Pompano City officials as its owner is arrested in a state prison.
Eventually Pompano Beach placed a notice on 20 November, giving 21 days notice to remove the yacht, with the family of the owner entering in helping the situation, and the yacht removed and demolished from the beach on the fourteen December.

Project: Cranchi SessantaSette Corsa

Cranchi and its lead designer Christian Grande are working on the project for the SessantaSette Corsa.  A hard-top sport yacht version of the SessantaSette, so far Cranchi is being tight on information for the Corsa project.  Translated to Race, Corsa is set to be a more sporty version with more streamlined upper structure and a mini flybridge up top with low profile furniture versus that of the 67.  For the interior I would not be surprised for it to have the exact same layout, which is offered in three or four cabins in the SessantaSette.  One information Cranchi reported is that the SessantaSette Corsa is to be powered by Volvo 1000hp with IPS propulsion as the standard 67, with this reaching speeds up to 29 knots and a cruise of 24.

Project: Jarrett Bay 90 Sportfisherman Hull #68

Jarrett Bay Boatworks is excited to announce the commission of hull #68 by repeat owners for an impressive upgrade to a high-tech 27 meter super sportfish yacht with a full tower and open bridge.  Hull #68 will share Jarrett Bay's flagship spot with the 90 hull #62 launched in 2017, although technically looking at details this hull #68 is a bit larger and wider.  This custom ninety feet Jarrett Bay will be added to the builder’s long list of extraordinary projects with cutting-edge infusion and advanced lamination techniques, both to the superstructure and the decks, to save weight. The cold-molded hull will be traditionally crafted to ensure Jarrett Bay’s signature legendary ride, while a massive cockpit and bridge will provide the space needed to fish and relax comfortably. The range is expanded with her ability to carry more than 15,000 litres of fuel, allowing for extended travel.  There are few compliments greater than a returning customer, and Jarrett Bay boasts many owner families who have entrusted their craftspeople to build their dream sportfishing boat or yacht more than once. Final details are currently under review, including power options and the interior arrangement. Construction is set to begin in the early part of 2023.

Steeler's new more avant-garde sporty brand Bronson is currently building this innovative and different Vector. An order from a client the 23 meter Vector is based on the hull of the Bronson 75 project and is a mix of an explorer and sport yacht of sorts.  Bronson Vector welcomes you aboard with a sport yacht entrance aft deck, two side entrances and a central sun-pad with a dinette in-front. Flybridge Cruiser Ends on Reef in Procida

A twelve meter flybridge cruiser ended on a reef in the Island of Procida on the afternoon of first November.  The flybridge cruiser ended beached to the West of Procida near Punta Serra and Pozzo Vecchio.  In late afternoon a Coast Guard rib boat was trying to pull tow away the cruiser with no success.
The flybridge cruiser in this accident is Hudson Ricci 40 as designed by Fred Hudson with hull shape by Jim Wynn and produced from 1989 to 1992 in 36 units and two versions.  This Hudson Ricci 40 is the second version called poppa lunga, long stern from 1990 to 92 in seventeen units.  Hudson and Ricci was Cantieri dell Pardo famous for its Grand Soleil sailing cruisers and yachts motor boat brand born in 1988 and continued till 1997 producing two models in that time, the 40 and the 54 from 1993.  Pardo will return to motorboat production again in 2017 starting with the 43 sport cruiser walkaround and today expanded to six models from eleven to 23 meters.

Sixty Years of Aquarama

In 2022 the Riva Aquarama celebrated sixty years from its inception.  Considered by most as the iconic boat, the Riva Aquarama entered production in 1962 and was produced till 1996 in 769 units and five versions, two of which are the very limited Lungo only seven units, and the one-off Lamborghini hull #278 build for Ferruccio himself.  An evolution of the 1954 launched Tritone, and coming from a design of Giorgio Barilani the Aquarama saw three different Riva ownerships in its production life; Carlo Riva, Whittaker from 1969, and Vickers 1989 to the last seven years.

When Ferretti Group took over Riva in May 2000 it was no surprise that the first step was launching a heir to the Aquarama with the AquaRiva.  Designed by since 1991 Riva designer Mauro Micheli, this new at the time model followed the iconic Aquarama in style and substance but is build in fiberglass with mahogany covered deck, and still in production today.  An icon from the start the AquaRiva has also seen six versions so far in twenty years production with the latest one the Anniversario launched for 2022 and limited to only eighteen units.

What makes a machine like the Aquarama special is that in a sector which is dominated by size, the most iconic boat is an eight meter runabout with a cuddy cabin forward and build of wood.  Surely there is iconic super yachts out there, but go in a bay full of large super yachts and put a Riva Aquarama in it and see it getting the admiration of both the trained and untrained eye.

If you want to car compare, the Riva Aquarama is like a Ferrari 250 GTO of the water, something special and unique which with its beauty has a special place in its natural environment, or as a monument to motor boating in an art gallery.
