Roger Hewson 1933 - 2023
The founder of Sabre Yachts, Roger Douglas Hewson, of Highland Green, Topsham, passed away peacefully on Dec. 2, 2023. Roger was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada on March 2, 1933, son of Irene Elderkin and Joseph Selden Hewson. Roger attended Westmount High School and graduated from McGill University with a degree in Civil Engineering in 1955. He married Charlotte Gulick Hewson “Charlie” in 1955 and they celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary in 2023. Roger followed his father’s footsteps in Hewson Construction where they built industrial buildings in Montreal, including four pavilions for the 1976 World’s Fair. The Hewsons moved to Maine in 1970 where Roger founded Sabre Yachts. Over the years Sabre built over 1600 sailboats from 28 feet to 45 feet, and later began building power boats, which Sabre continues to build today. Roger was a very competitive sailor and raced in the International 14-foot Dinghy, Dragon and Cruising Classes. He also learned to fly and had many years at the controls of his Cessna airplane. Roger and Charlie met through skiing and they enjoyed many years skiing as a family in the Laurentians, at Pleasant Mountain, and later at Sugarloaf where he skied until his mid-80s. Roger served on boards of several non-profit organizations including the National Sailing Association, National Marine Manufacturing Association, Business Advisory Council of the Federal Reserve of Boston, and Greater Portland Chamber of Commerce. Most recently he served as a volunteer at Maine Maritime Museum. The Hewsons lived on Raymond Cape on Sebago Lake for fifty years in a home which Roger designed and built in 1971. In 2010 they moved to Cundy’s Harbor, and later to Highland Green in Topsham. Roger was predeceased by his sister, Joanne Hewson Rees, of Montreal, by one day. Roger is survived by his wife, Charlie; his daughters Deborah Merrill and Evelyn King and her husband Bruce; his son, Halsey; grandchildren Seth King, Abbie Garcia-Tunon and her husband Javi, Lee King, Parker Merrill and Dana Merrill; and great-grandchildren, Javi, Lucy, and Luke Garcia-Tunon.

Improve-it = Sabre 40 Sedan
Sabre launches the first with flybridge option of the 2008 presented 40 Sedan model. Originally a traditional hardtop down east cruiser with patio door saloon, Sabre present a flybridge option for those who like to helm from up top. On standard form the 40 Sedan is already an all year cruiser, but the flybridge option does give more to it in nice weather. The flybridge of the 40 Sedan has an L-shaped settee to port side, and a single person helm station to starboard. The ladder for going up to the flybridge is located to starboard, and for this you loose the mezzanine settee lying on this side versus the standard hardtop version. You still get a mezzanine settee to port side. For the rest this new flybridge option keeps the plan of the standard 40 Sedan with its two cabins, single shower head interior, and twin Cummins 380hp powered with Zeus pods giving it a 31 knots top speed. Project: Sabre 46 Salon Express
Never a company to sit and wait for something to happen, the recent success of the South Casco US Sabre with the 40 Sedan demonstrates that the market likes new designs with latest technologies in them. Following this Sabre has been tweaking a new project for a few months on the development of a 46 foot powerboat design, the 46 Salon Express. This model will offer two well sized cabins layout each with it's own private head and shower. The galley will be down and another spacious area is the interior main deck saloon which joins with the aft deck thanks to the fully opening patio door. The 46 Salon Express will be powered by Cummins QSC 8.3 engines coupled to ZF Zeus pods. This should give estimated top speeds of 32 knots and a cruise of 27. Silence is also of importance to Sabre and the 46 Salon Express is quiet a whisper doing only 75 dba of noise. August 12, 2009
Improve-it = Sabre 38 Express
Sabre Yachts first used pods on the 42 Express and the results were truly impressive. Sabre is now offering also the 38 Express with Volvo IPS drives and this application too changes the way this already great design handles at the dock and underway. The choice for the IPS pods in the 38, was simple is that the Volvo set up fitted under the cockpit deck using the existing molds whereas the Zeus pods did not fit. Performance figures published by Sabre for the 38 Express with IPS450 D6-330hp engines are a wide open throttle max speed of 31 knots, and a continues cruising of 26 knots which gives a range of 292 nautical miles. Improve-it = Sabre 42 Express
The advantages of azipod drives have been discussed in many news articles and on the boat show docks as well. Sabre Yachts presents an optional pod propulsion on the Sabre 42 Express and the results as the shipyard says were truly impressive. This shows a superior performance and handling with less horse power thanks to the ZF Zeus 3500 Pods coupled with twin Cummins QSB5.9M 425hp engines. The data by Sabre showed a wide open throttle top speed of 34.2 knots at 3040 rpm, and a very economic cruising speed of 28 knots at 2800 rpm, which gives an amazing 325 nautical mile range. To better this one only a slow 9.9 knots speed at 1400 rpm would make it possible.
