Custom Sportfish Sinks then Recovered in Fort Lauderdale Marina

An unattended custom sportfish yacht of eighteen meters in length partly sank as it was berthed in Fort Lauderdale Marina, Fort Lauderdale, Florida on the early hours of Friday 22 July.  TowboatU.S Fort Lauderdale was called, coming  to the scene with three trucks, the Sunken Vessel Recovery Unit, and a crew of seven men an hour later to the call.  After deploying containment and absorbent boom to ensure no environmental damage, TowBoatU.S divers started rigging the sportfish with eight lift bags, and as these were inflated, slowly rose the yacht from the bottom. As the gunwales rose above the surface of the water, seven water pumps were put in operation to dewater the yacht. As the yacht was floated and derigged, she was towed to a local haul out facility for preservation and surveyor inspection.
The sportfish yacht in this sinking is a Buddy Davis 61 as designed by Donald Blount and Davis himself.  The Buddy Davis 61 was produced from the end eighties in fiberglass, up till the end of the noughties.  Buddy Davis is an important part in the cold-moulding evolution and the Carolina style sportfish boat and yacht.  Buddy Davis started to learn boat building in Winter 1967 and opened his company in 1973, which he sold in 2003 to Dr. Ira Trocki.

Project: Otam 90 GTS

Otam present the project for a 90 GTS set to launch in 2024.  Designed by Giuseppe Bagnardi, the 90 GTS is another version of the 80 Record hull as designed by Fabio Buzzi, which has been the successful story of the 80/90 Otam series which keeps on re-writing the manual what a custom boat really is, even though the basic foundations are those of the 80 Record boat, which smashed the Round Italy Venice to Monte Carlo, Monte Carlo to London, and Round Britain records in 2001.  The 90 GTS, if we include the 85 GTS should be the eight hull based on the 80 Record, though rightly so since upwards from the waterline this a total different yacht Otam is calling the 90 hull number one.  The first 90 GTS will mostly serve as a day and chase boat to the owners larger vessels, but Otam is already proposing various variations on the theme above from a soft top version, full or half-height windows, and single or double hull windows for the master stateroom at midships. The first Otam 90 GTS is to be powered by twin MTU 2600hp engines with surface drives propulsion with an estimated over forty knots top speeds estimated.

Fairline Yacht Destroyed by Fire in Peninsula

A 23 meter Fairline Yacht titled m/y Pegasus went ablaze at around 0300 hours of Friday morning fifteenth July in Gig Harbor, Peninsula, Washington.  Gig Harbor fire fighters were called at Harborview Drive to find the yacht well engulfed in flames, with the fast assistance from the water of West Pierce Fire and Rescue boat Endeavor able to contain the fire only to two boats, with a second neighbouring yacht to the starboard side also receiving burn damage. The Fairline yacht in the fire eventually sank, with the news being that no injuries where reported with both yachts being unattended at the time of the fire.
*Update June 2023*
The accident report issued by the National Transportation Safety Board found that the Fairline yacht m/y Pegasus burned down due to oily rags containing raw linseed oil stowed in an aft compartment being the cause of the fire.
The Fairline in this fire is a 2012 Squadron 78 Custom as designed by Bernard Olesinski and produced from 2007 till 2018 in 86 hulls.  The Squardron 78 Custom was an evolution of the Squadron 74 i arriving in 2007 with an extra large extended bathing platform aft, and launching the Yacht Division program involving all Fairline yachts upward of sixty foot.  Other improvements onward from 2012 was the change to square larger portholes, and the option of a hard-top.  A total of 115 Squadron 74 and 78 Custom in a fifteen year production run making it one of the most produced yachts in its size.
The other damaged yacht in this fire is an Ocean Alexander 64 Pilothouse as designed by Ed Monk and produced from 2001 till 2011.  The Ocean Alexander 64 Pilothouse was an extended cockpit version of the smaller 58 introduced in the same year, and was replaced by the 65 Pilothouse in 2011.

Project: Alia 60 meter

Turkish super yacht builder Alia presents a 60 meter project, reuniting the build team responsible for the 54 meter Al Waab with Dutch studio Vripack for the design and naval architecture, and GCC-based SF Yachts that will serve as project manager and owner’s representative throughout the construction. The owner is an experienced yachtsmen who has owned several yachts of various sizes over the past decade. For this latest project he requested an Ice Class standard with which to travel around the world with his family.  The owner’s brief has focused on a high performance, go-anywhere yacht that can accommodate a large family for long periods at a time. With an interior volume of 810 gross tons and generous exterior spaces, the family members will be able to enjoy extended cruises without having to return to shore for provisioning or refueling. With the addition of an Ice Class hull, the yacht will be able to go anywhere, anytime. In addition, close attention is being paid to the technical and logistical requirements to ensure the super yacht is as easy to operate and maintain for the crew as possible. Unusually, for example, the spacious galley and crew salon-dinette is on the main deck forward, where there is also a technical room with access to the side-loading tender garage. A popular social area on board that benefits from the high volume is the sprawling beach club on the lower deck that has a massage room, dive store and steam shower in addition to a gym and chill-out zone. As on Alia 54 meter, semi-transparent side panels create a wind-protected area and further connection to the water. The lower guest accommodation comprises no fewer than six guest suites: two cabins with twin single beds and four VIPs with double beds. An elevator connects all levels from the lower deck to the sun deck. The master stateroom is on the upper deck forward to enjoy the best views high above the water. This suite includes a very large walk-in wardrobe and a dedicated owner lounge overlooking a private foredeck. The new Alia 60-metre project is scheduled for delivery to her owner in 2024.

New Model: VanDutch 56

Van Dutch presents the new 56 an update of the 55 model, and current flagship of this now Italian, Cantiere dell Pardo owned and build sport cruiser and yacht builder, although a 75 is apparently in initial construction and project stages.  Subtle and important changes differentiate the 56 from the 55, the most important being that the 56 is now powered by Volvo IPS pod drives, versus the line shaft of the 55.  She is indeed the first VanDutch to be powered by IPS, and considering the use of Pardo of the Volvo pod drives we might see more of this on future VD models.   Other changes are the large bathing platform now keeping the same beam of the hull, and also having a design detail which brings her out of the hull.  Outside this is what makes you differentiate the 55 from the 56. On the accommodation front the Van Dutch 56 is near identical, with the lower deck offering a two cabins Sleep version and an open plan Lounge Version.  In both versions if you convert the dinette forward and the lounge aft the sleeping accommodation is for four persons.

Gagliotta New Web Site

Italian Neapolitan builder Gagliotta updates its World wide web showroom to a new design. Not very known outside the Italian peninsula, this builder has great respect mostly attributed to the racing success of founder Salvatore Gagliotta. Founded in 1952 in Naples, Mergellina, Gagliotta starts producing his first prototypes, which are small fast boats based on a Hunt hull design. Years pass and in the sixties Gagliotta moves from a hand building method to a semi production fiberglass construction method, and in the same time starts to compete in the Offshore competitions.  In 1968 Gagliotta also receives an honourable mention on the renowned Italian Nautica Magazine, where the Budda Blitz cruiser competing in a race keeps following the faster boats, with top US powerboat builder and racer Don Aronow complimenting this feat saying that the only one European hull worth copying is that of the Naples built and designed Gagliotta. In the year 2000 the Naples builder introduces the 37 Gagliardo designed by Stefano Mango which is still in production as 37, changing with this model the philosophy concept of all the range evolving it from a fast sport boat type to a sportfish cruiser. Today four out of five models follows this design accept for the 2009 introduced Judel and Vroijlik 35 Lobster. The current Gagliotta range offers four models from 35 to 52 feet, and two ranges Fisherman three units and the entry model 35 Lobster.  In 2017 Gagliotta also announced two additional 48 and 42 Lobster projects but so far these have not materialized as at today.  The new Gagliotta web site is available English and Italian language takes you around with the following buttons; Home, The Shipyard, Fisherman, Lobster,  and Contacts.  Gagliotta is also on social media with side and bottom links taking you to its Facebook and Instagram pages.
