Frits de Voogt 1927 - 2023

Former Feadship director Frits de Voogt has left for the better World at 96 years of age in native town of Haarlem on Wednesday 20 December.  Real name Frederik, Frits was born in Haarlem on 21 August 1927.  Frits took over De Voogt naval architecture from his father Henri after he suffered a stroke in 1958, and then went on to lead the firm and Feadship for decades, and together with his team, shaping that present and the future of the renowned yacht and super yacht Dutch builder. Frits designs were unique and are still the basis of today's Feadship yachts. Even after his retirement in 1995, Frits remained involved and interested in yacht building, always astute and modest. Frits was a mentor of the current leaders of Feadship, and went on to take the Lifetime Achievement Award from Showboats International in 2016.  Frits de Voogt also competed in the four rowing disciple without a helmsman and went to represent Holland in the 1952 Helsinki Olympics.  Frits was married to Luuk de Voogt-Groot, who passed away in 2011.

Chiselled contours and dark horizontal strip windows lend the yacht a poise and grace. The interior design also by Studio De Voogt is simple yet sophisticated and based on natural tones, light wood veneers and organic forms for an ambience that is soberly tasteful but also informal and welcoming. New Launch: Feadship 84.20m Hull. 710

Feadships has launched hull #710, an 84.20 meter super yacht designed by RWD and Monk for both exterior and interior, and titled m/y Obsidian. Feadship #710 features surprising destination spaces, such as an asymmetrical atrium staircase leading to a lower deck dining saloon, where an entire wall opens to reveal a terrace view just above sea level. Near the stern is an Aqua Lounge with massive windows below water level. In place of a mooring deck forward there is a revelatory bow observation lounge with double-curved glass floor-to-ceiling windows. Terraced aft decks float without pillars, while glass balustrades allow unobstructed views from both aft deck and fully glazed aft interior spaces, creating a vital connection to the natural environment.  Striving for innovation and first-class engineering, Feadship 710 is the perfect next step on the famous Dutch super yacht path toward building zero-emission superyachts by 2030. It is the first of the new generation of large yachts furthering carbon reduction through hulls optimised at cruising speed instead of top speed, weight control, advancements in electric propulsion, and the ability to run her generators on HVO, a second-generation biodiesel, a so-called net zero CO2 fuel. Sea trials and delivery fill where all made with HVO, reducing total CO2 emissions by about 90%. Hull 710 made full use of Feadship’s Advanced Electrical Drive program for diesel-electric hybrid power, and has 4.5 times more electrical storage capacity than the first hybrid yacht, the famous Savannah hull number. 686. Feadship #710 has also no drive shafts, and no rudders with an electric drive and steering provided by a pair of electric Veth contra-rotating thrusters. Feadship and Veth collaborated on computational fluid dynamics analysis of the drive legs and propellors’ shapes to maximize efficiency and minimize vibration.  Providing energy for the luxury hotel load accounts for much of a yacht’s fuel consumption, for Feadship 710, the engineering team took a deep dive into capturing waste heat from the custom variable speed generators and air conditioner chiller to supply heat to the AC system, pool water, domestic water, and engine preheating, while an innovative heat pump system allows the yacht to draw heat from seawater.

New Launch: Feadship 118m Hull. 1010

Feadship has in the end of 2022 launched its hull number 1010, its largest build to date, surpassing the 2018 launched 110 meter motor yacht Anna, hull number 1007 by eight meters.  Feadship hull number 1010 is designed by Espen Oino for exterior with interiors by Francois Zurretti, and naval architecture by Feadship engineering arm De Voogt.  A unique feature of 1010 is the curved glass for an observation area on the top deck. Largest Feadship to date, although not for long as hull 821 to be launched in 2024 is to be seventy centimetres longer.  Hull number 1010 had to be titled Katyusha, a name which suggests a Russian ownership although we have no confirmation about this.  Still half year after its completion hull. 1010 has not been delivered yet, renamed to NB1010 and since completing her sea trials in October 2022 has not moved from Harlingen in the Netherlands.

Project: Feadship 71.75m Sakura Hull. 827

Sakura is the Japanese name for ‘cherry blossom’. The 71.75-metre Feadship is named after Japan’s most enduring natural symbol for two reasons: her flowing organic lines and her diesel-electric propulsion that is future-focused on more sustainable yachting. Sakura is instantly recognizable but discreetly calming, with clean exterior styling by Studio De Voogt inspired by the simple yet sophisticated lines of Feadship’s Pure concept and exudes a distinctive poise and grace. From the extended sundeck forward to the seven-metre swimming pool aft, the exterior profile is perfectly balanced and at home on the water.  Feadship project Sakura will have interiors by Italian firm FM, who are going into a Japandi style.  Sold six weeks after its announcements Sakura is to be delivered in May 2025.

Project: Feadship 36.5 m Bahamas

Here at PowerYacht we love it when some of the famous names in yachting go out of there comfort zone, and present something different to what they usually are doing in recent times.  This new 36 meter Feadship project Bahamas is just about that, as today the Dutch builder is very rarely seen going in under the forty meter mark. Last build under forty meters was launched in 2017, and before that it was 2008.  Project Bahamas was presented by Feadship during the Palm Beach boat show in March 2023, with some rendering shared on its social media platforms.  She comes from a design of Dutch firm De Voogt and Italian FM Nautica who do the interior.  To be built of aluminium Feadship project Bahamas is one of the modern takes from the renowned Dutch super yacht builder with seamless main and lower decks, creating a clean and minimal yet sporty profile, thanks to the use of clean lines without curves.  Feadship project Bahamas will also feature an extendable beach club aft, with a splash pool and side lowering bulk heads.  Accommodation will be for four double guest cabins, including of which is an owners stateroom forward of the main deck.  Feadship project Bahamas is also a very ecological concept in terms of materials used for its construction, with a proposal to make the floor made with a stone-marble-resin matrix replacing teak.

Like every genuinely custom superyacht, the design for m/y Shinkai, Feadship's hull number 708  revolved around these specific choices of the client. In this case the key was how best to incorporate a 7.2-tonne submarine on the aft deck along with the giant crane required for launching and collection. Feadship hull. 817 set the target of keeping the environmental impact for a ground-breaking eco-friendly 94-metre pure custom super yacht.  One of the ways in which this highly ambitious goal was approached, has been to install an exceptionally advanced hybrid propulsion system. They also obviously play a key role in the open beach-house-style interior by Peter Marino Architects. The owner who came from a previous 62 meters smaller Feadship has put a less is more philosophy in this new construction, influencing every aspect of the design inside and out, with an abundance of clean lines.  Titled M/Y Viva, hull 817 was put pen to paper in 2015, and features a special pearl-white livery, the hull has been designed, engineered and built to be as efficient as possible and reduce the engine power required to move through the water.

New Launch: Feadship 99.95m Hull. 1008

A new star has been born into the Feadship firmament with the launch of the 99.95-metre hull. 1008 titled m/y Moonrise. Unveiled today by the Feadship yard in Makkum hull. 1008 successfully marries sleek sensual lines with a modern masculine profile. A wide range of elegant details, long hull windows, a glorious grey hull and striking vertical bow add to the elegance of the design by Studio De Voogt. In addition to her imposing length hull. 1008 has a very impressive volume thanks to its fifteen metre beam. This has generated some fabulous interior space for sixteen people in eight staterooms. There are also exceptionally high-end crew accommodations for up to 32 crew, which are bathed in natural light and designed to ensure a premium standard for those living and working on the yacht. Guests and staff alike will benefit from the huge effort expended on keeping hull. 1008 exceptionally quiet, eclipsing even Feadship’s legendary standards of noise and vibration attenuation. Exterior highlights of note include the way that the superstructure is entirely clad in glass, the helipad on the foredeck and the large beach club aft, complete with gym and wellness areas. High ceilings predominate both outdoors and in, with flush decks complementing a seamless transition to the interior. The latter features a sophisticated yet minimalistic style by Rémi Tessier Design that is instantly welcoming. Twin MTU engines enable hull. 1008 to reach 19.5 knots and her cruising speed is sixteen knots, with Quantum stabilisers ensuring a comfortable ride at all times.  Like every new Feadship hull. 1008 benefits from the latest thinking in terms of smooth operation and environmental responsibility. For example, exhaust gas treatment has been fitted to the main engines, in addition to the Feadship proprietary generator exhaust cleaning system installed these past decades. A heat recovery system installed on the generators allows Moonrise’s jacuzzi water to be warmed up using far less electrical power. And an ECO-certified system for dynamic positioning facilitates the most energy-saving generator use in this mode.  The naval architecture for hull. 1008 has been optimised to provide maximum comfort both underway and at anchor. Her propeller and appendages have been designed to ensure minimum noise levels underwater, reducing both the yacht’s impact as well as interior sound levels. Add in extended autonomy, the long cruising range, streamlined hull design and cutting-edge wastewater processing and storage facilities and it is clear that hull. 1008 once again sets the benchmark for efficiency in the widest sense of the word.
