Azimut Benetti Group Brilliant Results

Since the beginning of the year the turnover of Azimut-Benetti Group, for the last forty years one of the leading companies at international level in the luxury nautical market, has resumed a positive growth trend, +20% compared to the same period last year. At the end of March the shipyard workers all came off the wages guarantee fund and returned to full-time work at the various production sites. The optimism at the headquarters in Avigliana is also due to the healthy state of the orders portfolio: at 30th March 2010, i.e. just over halfway through the nautical year (1st September - 31st August), the Group has orders for 90% of its budget, approximately 50% more than at the same date last year. In terms of end customer sales, this translates into approximately 250 yachts sold, as against just over 150 in the same period last year. This is proof that, after a year of stagnation, the nautical market has regained confidence and that customers are buying once again, although only from shipyards that guarantee solidity and product innovation. The company therefore has good reason to be confident about the next few months, which are traditionally decisive for sales, and looks forward to closing the year with turnover and profit margins on the increase. It should also be pointed out that Azimut-Benetti's maximum seasonal negative cash flow is currently around 100 million Euros as against 220 last year. Given the equity of the company, equal to 300 million Euros, the solidity of the Group is evident and, against a background of widespread financial instability in the sector, it confirms its leadership even more forcefully. The Azimut-Benetti anti-recession strategy focused on three main points. Rationalising and increasing the efficiency of the organisation by concentrating production at the company's own sites. Intelligent use of the wages guarantee fund which, in agreement with the trade union representatives, coincided with a process of employee training and professional requalification, via which the company has developed skills within its organisation which were previously outsourced. Continuation and confirmation of all the investments allocated to the development of new products, made possible by the company's great financial solidity. In this regard the Group, which invested over 50 million Euros in this area between 2008 and 2010, confirms its commitment to presenting over 30 new models in the next 3 years, of which approximately half will be longer than 100 feet. This is testified by the recent launch of the new "Azimut Grande" line, a flagship fleet which in addition to the 120 SL - which will be ready in the next few days - will comprise a further 3 models between 100 and 126 feet, and renewal of the Benetti Class line with 7 new models ranging from 90 to 164 feet.

Azimut Teams with Pedetti Yacht Sales

Azimut has given sales dealership rights to Pedetti Yacht Sales for the new Magellano line in the North West Italian Coast. This agreement has just been closed and signed in recent days and comes to full satisfaction of both parties. The Avigliana Viareggio boat building Giant has trusted one of the most renowned shops to what regards ship style yachts, thanks to Giancarlo Pedetti long time experience in this market sector. In past years Pedetti Yacht Sales has been a dealer of choice for those who like to go at a slow displacement speeds in total comfort.

Bertram Takes Thirtieth Shootout

Bertram, a dominant force in the sport-fishing industry and a brand of Ferretti Group, is thrilled to announce winning the 30th anniversary of the Bertram-Hatteras Shootout, taking both the overall title in addition to top boat. The final score was Bertram with 1500 points and Hatteras with 1100 points over the three days of intense fishing. Bertram took home both the manufacturers trophy for the most overall points and the trophy for the overall winning boat, Great White Too, a Bertram 630 Enclosed Bridge owned by Guillermo Belloso. The Great White Too took first place by releasing a blue marlin, a white marlin and a spearfish. The Certifiable, a Bertram 700 Convertible, owned by Syd Sussman was close behind with two white marlins to finish in third place overall. Both of these teams also took first and third place respectively in the winner take all division. Over Budget, a Bertram 510 Convertible, owned by Ricky Sousa also placed with one white marlin. The Bertram team also took the overall title in the new fun fish division with Sharkbait, a Bertram 630 Convertible owned by Paul Cole weighing in a yellow fin tuna at 111 pounds and Certifiable also was on the board with both a yellow fin tuna at 66 pounds and a wahoo at 48 pounds. This year's tournament attracted 12 Bertram yachts and 14 Hatteras yachts to Abaco Beach Resort in the Bahamas. For the past few years, the tournament has strictly been a catch and release tournament for billfish but this year the committee added the fun fish division to give anglers an opportunity to show off their daily catches of tuna, wahoo, and dolphin. The new management of the tournament by Bertram, Allied Marine, Hatteras and their dealer was also well received by all participants with a week full of competitive camaraderie, a historic photo presentation of the past thirty years of the Shootout, and a disco theme party. The new Bertram 800 was also presented for the first time to the Bertram and Hatteras audience on the first night of the Shootout during the welcome cocktail registration on the center dock in front of the main tent. All the Bertram owners and their guests were invited aboard the 800 on the lay day to experience the new yacht in the crystal clear waters of the Bahamas. The Bertram 800 headed to the new Baker's Bay resort to meet up with the Hatteras owners for a Bahamian style barbeque and a golf challenge for some more competitive fun. Overall, the event brought together both sides for some friendly competition and the result was a success for both teams.

Dominator New Drive

Dominator Yachts, the new subsidiary of a well known Investment Group owning a wide variety of international business interests, has officially announced the 100% takeover from the of Dominator S.r.l. of the famous Fano-based Dominator brand, specialised in the construction of 18 to 30 metre, luxury fibreglass yachts. This operation is an important part of the strategic business plan launched by the shipyard (but temporarily suspended in recent months due to the general market crisis), which includes a call for greater focus on the company’s core business in order to further expand medium and large-scale yacht production. Thanks to this takeover the new Dominator Yachts shipyard continues to meet the immediate targets in its industrial plan and within the next 2 months no less than 3 new yachts, a Dominator 29M , Dominator 860 , and a Dominator 680 will be delivered to their owners. In addition to this achievement, the brand will also be launching the new Dominator 720, an operation that will include the craft’s official worldwide unveiling in Cannes at the “Festival de la Plaisance 2010”. These are the key events the shipyard has planned for the next few months. Another major step is the delivery of the brand new, full aluminium Dominator 39M, produced exclusively for Dominator Yachts by the long established Rossi Navi shipyard in Viareggio, designed by T4 Design and surveyed by chief designer Enrico Gobbi personally. This close working relationship between the two shipyards will allow Dominator Yachts to further expand its large yacht sector up to 70 metres and meet the requirements of its wide range of customers even more effectively. But the company’s groundbreaking vision does not stop here, as the brand is also working extremely hard to develop an exciting new concept in yacht design. Destined to revolutionise the entire worldwide yachting market, the feedback from this major new research project and tests conducted in Fano have shown that the shipyard can now achieve a 30% to 80% reduction in fuel and energy consumption thanks to a newly engineered hull and propulsion system concept. In short then, Dominator Yachts is currently conducting a remarkable Coast to Coast programme that will allow the brand to launch craft in both the Adriatic and the Tyrrhenian Sea. Throughout this important takeover operation, Dominator Yachts has been assisted by Federico Santini Esq. of the Rome-based Studio Legale Internazionale d’Ippolito, acting as the buyer’s legal advisor.

Devised to further extend the range of excellent services already reserved for Ferretti Group Clients, “easea>show” was inaugurated by Norberto Ferretti, Chairman, Salvatore Basile, CEO,and Lamberto Tacoli, Chief Sales & Marketing Officer of the Ferretti Group, in the presence of the press, the local authorities, the international sales network and Clients. Easea shows the privilege of being involved in a unique, tailor-made experience, one which has never before existed on the world nautical scene. Moreover, the “easea>show” project avails itself of important partners par excellence, both locally and nationally, in order to make owners’ visits even more special. It is a permanent boat show, displaying the most important yachts of all Ferretti’s prestigious brands, a truly exclusive, personalized showcase of the Group’s fleet. The display, part of the larger “easea&gt.yachting” services project which commenced at the beginning of 2009, will be a private, permanent boat show. It will enable even the Group’s busiest Clients to visit the yachts any day of the year, and carry out sea trials in total privacy and a relaxed environment. Easea>show thus responds to the requirements of the Group’s most demanding owners who, by booking through the reference dealer or broker for their area, can visit the yachts and try them out at sea privately, accompanied by a dedicated, highly specialised staff, thus doing away with the inconvenience caused by crowding at boat shows. Hence, the display offers Group Clients. A balance of the most important results achieved during the first seven months of the 2009-2010 nautical year was presented during the course of the inaugural press conference. Although the macro economic context is still uncertain, during this period the Ferretti Group has registered the first signs of a recovery. From 1st September 2009 to 31st March 2010, the Group collected around double the orders compared to the same period of the previous year. Moreover, as of today, the Group’s backlog covers around 85% of the budget set for this nautical year. Moreover, during the course of the meeting a world première, the new Ferretti 800, was presented to confirm the new relaunch phase. This yacht is the very latest model to be designed and produced by Ferretti Yachts, the Group’s historical brand, which operates within the sphere of the production of flybridge motoryachts measuring 14 to 27 metres in length.

Hunt Receives NMMA Innovation Award

The new Hunt 52 from Hunt Yachts commanded attention from consumers and the press when introduced at fall shows in 2009. Since then, this handsome and speedy semi-custom motor yacht has been tested and profiled by many of the most influential marine journalists, who unanimously have noted that she is bristling with useful, clever, innovative and appealing features and details. That assessment was recently confirmed by NMMA, which bestowed one of its prestigious 2010 Innovation Awards on the Hunt 52. Naval architects, C. Raymond Hunt Associates, renowned for the original concept and continuous refinement of the deep-V hull form, strategically designed the Hunt 52 to deliver outstanding performance and comfort under the widest range of sea conditions, classic lines, the livability of an unbroken/single-level main deck from helm to stern seating, the capability to be enjoyed by many yet handled with ease by a single couple. All of these facets in her design have since been proven in use. The 2010 Innovation Award recognizes one in a long list of features, most of which are unique in a yacht of this size. In partnership with Man Ship of Taiwan, several of the furnishings are mechanized to easily convert from cruising to entertaining; this convenience is found is such features as the aft and interior tables which adjust by flick of their switches from cocktail to dining height. The double-wide companion helm seat, also mechanized, drops and reverses to complete a U-shaped settee. Man Ship Machinery and Hardware CO; Ltd. is a well-known and respected manufacturer of chandlery and hardware for the international boatbuilding industry since 1982.

Moonen to Complete a 120feet Super Yacht

Moonen Shipyards has been commissioned for a unique project to finish a 120 ft yacht designed by Bill Dixon which was started by Royal Denship in Denmark before bankruptcy. Around a quarter of the semi-displacement motoryacht had been completed when the Danish yard went into administration in June 2009. The owner of the uncompleted vessel contacted Moonen due to the yard's growing reputation in the refit market as well as its fine track record of building new superyachts. The fact that it concerns a motoryacht that yet had to be completed and the fact that composite is not the material that Moonens builds her reputation on, the project needed a "Think different"-approach. The interior styling is in the hands of the owner, and the yard is also partnering with external parties such as composite experts Green Marine, Alewijnse for the electrical installation and De Leeuw Yacht services for the painting. One of the major issues for Moonen is that the yard has never previously built a yacht in GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic). All the GRP parts of the vessel are available except the main deck, with the hull and bridge deck being almost completely assembled. Around 20 percent of the equipment is available, including the main engines, gearboxes and other small components. Moonen has already carried out a complete design and status check, which made clear that the engineering packages were randomly incomplete. After these have been closed, the yard will make a start with building the stern section of the hull while simultaneously completing the technical installation. The yacht is planned for launching in May 2011.

It was a triumphant return to the 22nd Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show for Riviera, Australia’s most awarded pleasure boat builder, with 19 new boats sold over the four day event, including the sale of nine new 43 Open Flybridges. This remarkable result far exceeds all expectations with a total value of more than $20 million in sales being achieved from across the award winning range. Riviera opened the show with the world release of the much-anticipated 43 Open Flybridge with IPS on day one, followed by a cocktail party for more than 300 guests on the evening of day two on Riviera’s large 2362 square metre floating display. Riviera’s chief executive officer John Anderson said the world release of the new 43 Open Flybridge was a huge success with the first 43 sale being achieved within the first hour of the show opening. Sales were across the board from 36 to 61 feet including multiple sales of 5800 and 5000 Sport Yachts, a number of flybridge models including a 61 Enclosed. Veteran sailor Ian Reynolds who completed his circumnavigation of Australia at the age of 82 in a Riviera 56 Enclosed Flybridge officially launched the new 43 Open Flybridge and was a special guest at Riviera’s floating display during the show. According to Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show general manager Barry Jenkins, numbers were ‘softer than previous years’ but it was a tremendous boat show for everyone.

Riviera Ambassadors Shares Experience at the Show

Riviera had a special guest of honour at this year’s Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show held from May 20-23. Veteran blue water sailor and Melbourne businessman, Ian Reynolds was at the Riviera display with his 56 Enclosed Flybridge, Investigator V, the vessel he used to circumnavigate Australia. Mr Reynolds, at the age of 79 embarked on the challenging task of circumnavigating Australia, some 9,000 miles, clockwise from the Gold Coast returning home in October 2008. But before he could make this dream of circumnavigating Australia by power boat a reality, Mr Reynolds and his crew made the 842 nautical mile voyage from the Gold Coast to Lord Howe Island as a shake down cruise for testing systems and checking fuel and range calculations in his new 56 Enclosed Flybridge. His most recent challenge, aged 81, was the month-long voyage, a total of 1380 nautical miles, to Papua New Guinea for the second annual Louisiades Rally. His next venture will take him to China in search of an Aids cure but this will mean the sale of his beloved Riviera 56 Enclosed Flybridge, Investigator V, which will be on display and offered for sale for the first time at Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show. Mr Reynolds said the opportunity to continue the work into a cure for Aids presented a challenge he could not resist. Riviera CEO John Anderson said it was an honor to have Mr Reynolds at the Riviera display.

Projects: Van Der Heijden 2400 Superior, Van Der Heijden 3300 Superior

Dutch boat builder Van Der Heijden continues its recent strategy of expanding sizes with two new projects which put it into the Super Yacht World. Pictured above is the 2400 Superior project currently under construction in the Netherlands. This second Superior shows similar looks to the smaller 2000 model, and will be built to the same methods of a steel hull, and an alloy super structure. Project weight is an estimated 48 tons, which is light considering that this is less to a similar sized and powered glass fibre yacht. The 2400 Superior will also feature another distinction offering five guest cabins, and a single two person crew cabin aft. Not bad for a pocket Super Yacht just measuring 24 metres, and thanks to its hull length of less to this can be driven with a standard Yacht Master licence. Distinction is also shown in the second in size VIP cabin located aft. The 2400 Superior follows again the smaller 2000 sister in hull design and engines with a similar hard chine shape below waterline, and twin 825hp of power. Estimated speeds are of 18 knots of max. The project of the 3300 Superior continues Van Der Heijden further size expansion into the Super Yacht market. As it can be seen in the rendering this project continues the modern looks of the Superior range. The 3300 Superior will also feature two and a half decks, featuring a comfortable raised pilot station on top of things, this allowing for an extension of the main deck for entertainment purposes. No speeds, power options, or layout descriptions have been communicated so far.

Various power options from twin Cats 705hp up to 1001hp engines are available, this last delivering top speeds of 35 knots.

Project: Galeon 350 HT

As it was expected Galeon continues the replacement of the 330 model, and after presenting the 340 Fly in Dusseldorf sets its sight on changing the HT model with the above pictured 350 HT project. This new model is already in the making and expands the 330 hull adding space and running surface aft. This means a larger bathing platform for entertainment, and better tender stowage facilities. The 350 HT will also feature Galeon full profile black window streak, which just as the 340 Fly goes from bow to aft, integrating nicely with the engine air intakes. This rendering also shows an expanded pilot house with large view windows. In perspective this new model keeps and builds on the top selling 330 platform benefits, as the three cabins below, separate shower and head, and a living main deck. A layout which is usually associated in much bigger Sport Cruiser then the ten metres we have here. Power options are not communicated though I expect similar choices as the 340 with twin Volvo 260hp, and optional 300hp engines.

New Model: Grand Banks 72 Aleutian SC

Grand Banks has launched the 72 Aleutian SC, a further development of the 72 hull and delivered in fifteen units in its RP layout. This new 72 Aleutian SC takes many similarities from the RP model, although its waterline length is about two feet longer. The main difference is the flash aft deck which replaces the lower fisher style layout to stern of the famed RP model. The above picture shows the second 72 Aleutian SC which was launched in the first quarter of this year, following the making of the first in the fall of 2009. Latest Aleutian series model of raised pilothouse Explorer Yachts, the 72 Aleutian SC joins the RP sharing top flagship status as Grand Banks largest and most luxurious yacht in the fleet. The 72 SC key differences from the RP version is to aft where instead of the open lower cockpit with stairs up to the main deck level, the new flagship aft area extends from the salon to the transom on one level creating a wonderfully large outdoor living covered by the extended flybridge above. In addition, the 72SC will also offer an option of a four guest stateroom layout, in lieu of the standard three cabin version. Two crew berths are located to midship

Improve-it = Arcoa 44 Mystic

Arcoa has recently launched an improved version for its successful 44 Mystic model which now features a high low bathing platform, and a black colored hull. Titled the Black Line option these improved characteristics to the 44 Mystic adds further comfort, style and versatility. The Arcoa 44 Mystic is a traditional down east looking cruiser with a European influence to its design, characterized by wide beam and a Mediterranean style cockpit. Down below the French builder offers two cabins, with an owners en-suite stateroom to fore, and twin beds guest cabin to starboard. You also get the main galley below. This improvement follows that of last year introduced IPS600 option for this model which increased performance by six knots in wide open throttle mode reaching 37 knots, and doing 30 knots on cruise.

Projects: Rhea 67 Trawler, Rhea 57 Trawler

After launching the Rhea 43 Trawler in the fall of 2009, this French boat builder is preparing for making a full range of medium to long Explorer Cruisers and Yachts, which in its completion will feature four models. Pictured above is the project for the 67 Trawler what will be the flagship of Rhea with an overall length of twenty plus metres. The 67 Trawler will feature a three double cabins interior and a crew cabin aft. The owner suite as recent fashion dictates, is a full beam affair. Rhea 67 Trawler apart the name wants also to show its work boat heritage with a trawler’s bow, frigate’s stern, two tone gel coat hull color, Portuguese bridge, and a spacious luxurious wheelhouse. Rhea also promises cruising enthusiasts a first class construction quality, high-spec equipment, and again protected propellers to prevent damage when running aground or hitting submerged objects while on the run. The 67 Trawler will have a semi-displacement hull that provides a range of over one thousand nautical miles with twin 800hp diesel engines, and 10,000 litres of fuel. The 57 Trawler will be the second large in size Rhea. Having an overall length of seventeen plus metres this other Rhea project also offers a three double cabins plus crew interior. The layout here is for a full beam owner suite, VIP to fore, a double bunk cabin to port, and a single crew cabin aft. The main deck is also a standard layout offering contemporary solutions of yachts a saloon upon entrance, an open galley, L-shaped settee, and a central helm station. For the large flybridge the 57 Trawler will also offer two stair cases, from the inside and on the aft deck. As for the 67, and 47 the Rhea 57 Trawler features elements that show work boat heritage like the bow, two tone color and protected propellers. Power for the 57 Trawler will be by twin 500hp engines, which should give a one thousand nautical miles range.

New Model: Bavaria 38 Sport

Bavaria continues its cooperation with exterior design partner BMW Group DesignworksUSA, a subsidiary of the BMW Group, originating its third Sport Cruiser with the new 38 Sport presented in Dusseldorf the past January. The new 38 Sport, follows BMW exterior designs as shown on the 46 Deep Blue, and 28 Sport launched in 2009. This 38 Sport also extends concepts as presented by Bavaria with the 37 introduced in 2007; offering a high free board hull, and aft deck giving the feeling of more size then the provided eleven metres. Here in fact the Bavaria 38 Sport offers a sun lounger, C-shaped dinette, passenger settee, galley, and helm station. Down below is space for two double cabins, L-shaped galley, and C-shaped dinette. Diesel engine options are from twin Volvo 260hp up to 370hp, all with stern drive propulsion. Two petrol gas options from Mercruiser and Volvo are also available but I would stay clear of these on a cruiser of this size.

Project: Rose Island 53 Lobster

In occasion of Rose Island tenth birthday celebration at the Genoa Airport Marina this family owned Italian boat builder makes courage for its future, and presents the 53 Lobster project. During this celebration Rose Island also launched hull number one of the new 43 Lobster which we should present you here in a couple weeks. The 53 Lobster will further complete Rose Island range integrating with the other Traditional lobster styled four sisters from 38 to 65 feet, and the 58 Pathfinder explorer yacht model. For the 53 Lobster yard owner engineer Fabio Rosa set his design team for a traditional yacht which can be handled easily without the need for crew. The project follows present Rose Island models where seamanship and classic looks stay first above all other needs. Down below the project renderings show a three double cabin interior with owners suite to fore, two double guest cabins at midship, and a guest shower head. Below is also space for a crew cabin with personal shower head located to midship and having a separate entrance. The main deck is a three split levels zones, which features a welcoming free aft area which says a bit fisherman. Move more to fore and up one step and you have a central settee for three adults with table. A further step up take you inside to the hard top covered area where to port side is an L-shaped galley, helm station, and to starboard is an L-shaped sofa. This area can also be closed with a patio door as optional. Big uncluttered views and natural light also cover the inside pilot house saloon area. Natural solid hard woods and selected leathers will fill the interior to a clean and classic style. As is usual to Rose Island big study has also been done to offer a good hull without the need of too much horse power but still managing good speeds and efficiency. A target total 700 horse power is so far the basis with options of a direct line shaft or Volvo IPS pod propulsion. With this Fabio Rosa is estimating a thirty knots wide open throttle, and on the plane only eleven knots speed which should give added comfort in rough sea conditions.

Project: Heesen 6500 Fast Displacement Hull Form

Heesen Yachts is pleased to unveil a revolutionary 65 metre all aluminium design based on the Fast Displacement Hull Form, whose tank testing has been completed at the Wolfson Unit in Southampton. Developed by Dutch naval architects Van Oossanen & Associates, the Heesen 6500 Fast Displacement Hull Form is a truly innovative concept that increases the overall performance of the yacht. Tank tests have shown that in comparison with traditional hard chine and round bilge hulls, FDHF improves the efficiency of the vessel by around 30%. The slenderness and special form of the hull result in a very low wave profile over the entire speed range, while also improving its sea-keeping and manoeuvrability. As a consequence, it has a very positive impact on the cost of running the yacht, while also lowering its environmental impact in terms of engine emissions. Speed estimates are for a remarkable 27 knots max, and a 75% engine load 24 knots cruise. The exterior design of this 65-metre vessel is by Dutch designer Frank Laupman of Omega Architects. Other leading international designers have also been asked to create alternative proposals for the exterior styling. Omega’s design clearly shows the Heesen bloodline, while invigorating it with the aggressive appearance of a racing car. Notable design features include a touch and go helipad forward and a semi-shaded area surrounding the swimming pool on the main deck. On the lower deck is a vast beach club area, whose design incorporates bar, sauna and hammam. In addition to the large transom platform, there is a side balcony that opens from the hull to the port side to provide the owner and his guests with an even closer connection to the sea. Heesen Yachts will present the innovative 6500 Fast Displacement Hull Form to the yachting community on September at the Monaco Yacht Show.

Project: Ritchie Howell 54 Express

Custom Sportfish builder Ritchie Howell and design studio Applied Concepts break the mold with the 54 Express project, not only for its IPS propulsion but for an interior which says more luxury. The 54 Express challenge starts with the outside deck, which is a four steps split level area which joins the free combat low to the water aft deck, to the more entertaining raised part, where in between all this you get today's sport fishing must have of a mezzanine aft looking sofa seat. The unusual here is the modern C-shaped settee on the raised part, which is joined by an exterior galley and a central located three seat helm station. Below deck the similarities with a Sport Yacht go further, having a layout plan for a two cabins, twin en-suite shower heads, galley and L-shaped settee. Don't be mistaken but to think this is a standard plan as the owners master stateroom is a full beam affair with personal office, and the forward cabin is a VIP suite. Ritchie Howell and Applied Concepts also offer a choice to the mid cabin which can be changed for a two by double berths sleeping four adults instead of the owners stateroom plan. The only thing in question in this version is that it is a single room, although being Ritchie Howell a custom builder who builds in cold molding I am sure a compromise could be found for making this a full three cabin layout. Currently in an advanced stage of construction the 54 Express will be powered by Volvo IPS900 twin 700hp engines with forward looking dual propeller pod drives, which the builder estimate should give a 150 litres per hour diesel consumption at 34 knots cruise. www.ritchiehowell.com

Boat Review: Nord West 370 Coupe

Presentation
Benny Martinsson Nord West has been clever with their designs, and the 370 hull shape available in four model types all suited to different usages is full proof to this. Launched in 2008 first quarter, the Nord West 370 Coupe was the second type model to be presented in this series. But the goods does not stop here as the 370 as all the types in this series is also available with different type of propulsion choice of stern drives, and IPS pods. This last has given Nord West acclaims from all categories receiving awards as one of the best performing IPS hulls. While the terminology in the super structure of the 370 changes dramatically the lower and main deck styles between the Flybridge, Coupe, and the Sport, Sports Top models also deliver huge differences. The 370 Coupe we review is a Sport Cruiser having the comfort of a flybridge without a second helm. That means that the living is on the main deck, and sleeping quarters are located below. This makes the 370 Coupe an all season boat with patio easy to close or open door sport cruiser, a trend which started in bigger yacht sizes and as happens today it is transferred to smaller models. Think as the 370 Coupe with all the Flybridge model features adding benefits of lower air draft and a large electrically operated sunroof over the saloon, at the cost of the flybridge deck and second helm station up top.
Accommodation
If your usage is committed to all year round a hard top patio door type sport cruiser should be on top of your cards. The benefits are endless and Nord West 370 Coupe delivers the best of them, with a clever and practical living up, and sleeping below layout.
The 370 Coupe welcomes you on board with its large extended bathing platform. Two steps up and the opening of the integrated stern door gets you in the aft cockpit deck. Here you find an L-shaped settee with table to port. Two steps to starboard take you to the side walks which lead to the fore deck. A sun awning can also protect the aft deck from sunshine and further side extensions can transform it to an additional all weather living area. A sliding patio door gets you in the living main saloon having a C-shaped dinette with table to port, galley and helm station to starboard. This area is also space for intelligent touches as the co-pilot seat which transforms from the fore part of the C-shaped dinette, and the fridge freezer hidden under the helm chair. The 370 Coupe is also about choices in the galley and one can decide between a classy electric or more practical easy to use gas hob. Adding to this area liveliness are full around view windows, and an electric sunroof up top which opens a third of the roof for natural light and air.
A central stairs with three steps lead to the lower accommodation deck. Here the layout is a forward master stateroom with central island berth, shower head, and two guest cabins to mid ship. This last does make the 370 Coupe stand out again from the competition. The port cabin offers a large double berth, with a relaxing settee upon entrance. While the starboard cabin is a single berth. The well sized fully equipped head, with shower cubicle is located in between the master and guest cabins to starboard.
Finishing in the 370 Coupe is full of timeless wood touches of varnished mahogany inside, and untreated teak floor for all exterior from the bathing platform, aft cockpit, to the side decks. The aft hand rail is also finished in classy mahogany wood, adding to a unique touch of class. Performance
For the Nord West 370 Coupe, Benny Martinsson uses a variable Vee shape hull with a fine entry which closes to a moderate angle aft. This hull has been studied to perform well with both stern drive and IPS pods and is used for all four of the 370 series models. Engines choices are a total of three: Volvo D4 260hp, D4 300hp, and D6 370hp. Propulsion option are for two Volvo DPH stern drive, and the IPS forward looking dual propeller pods. The model tested featured IPS400 units with pods and Volvo D4 300hp engines. With this choice the 370 Coupe achieves a 32 knots top speed at 3500 rpm, and at 3250 rpm it delivers a 28 knots cruise. This cruise also delivers the best economy giving a range of 247 nautical miles drinking 96 liters per hour. This again shows the Nord West 370 hull efficiency on these speeds delivering very good performance and consumption results. So far we have no figures for the stern drive propulsion but I would expect a similar performance to other Nord West 370 versions with minor difference. That means that the large 370hp DPH stern drive option should be good for close to 40 knots top speeds, which is what the sister Sports Top achieves with this set up. Personally for the 370 Coupe I still suggest the IPS400 as engine propulsion choice, mostly because of the wind effect for the main deck. In the end the IPS still delivers a lively handling just short of a stern drive set up, and easy precise tight space manoeuvring.

Competition
An expanding market, this how Sport Cruisers with patio door has been in the past years and I am sure it will be more so in the future. In the past 2009 year the market has seen the addition of four new models, and I would think more builders will join in this type of design for its practicality reasons. Some of the competition below just like the Nord West, feature also a flybridge counterpart like Azimut, Galeon, Intermare, Nimbus and Portofino. While other models are primarily Sport Yachts exclusive like the 2009 launched Colombo, or the recently updated Riviera. Criteria is set for eleven to twelve metres sport cruiser, all propulsion types, and patio door.
Azimut 40S - small S, shafts, galley down, large 2 x 480hp
Colombo 37 Alldays - IPS only, 3 berths mid cabin, classy wood finishing outside
Galeon 390 HT - stern drive, shafts, or IPS, large split level saloon, 3 cabins 2 heads
Intermare 36 Cruise - galley down, bunk second cabin, shafts
Nimbus 380 Coupe - galley up, line shaft, double mid ship cabin
Portofino 11 Coupe - IPS pods, bunk second cabin
Riviera 3600 Sport Yacht SII - three berths mid ship cabin, IPS, clever patio door
WILD CARD: Di Donna 38 Serapo Cabin - tradition modern, 2 saloons, IPS or shafts
Conclusion
Very few if any builders offer such a varied choice with one hull shape, and this is what Nord West manages to do with the 370 platform. The Coupe version is one of their most fitting and unique designs, offering not only a patio door but also a much preferred living up sleeping below layout. That means that the day running is all fit on the main deck with the galley, helm, dining, and cockpit, while sleeping is located undisturbed in the three cabins below. Performance is also top notch for the 370 Coupe with the IPS400 choice delivering good thirty knots plus speeds with economy. Still if high performance is your thing and close to forty knots performance are a must you can still choose the twin 370hp stern drive option. Last deal breaker for the 370 Coupe goes for its practical touches like the double co-pilot seat which takes shape from the dinette, and the large freezer hidden under the helm chair. The 370 Coupe keeps also Nord West heritage of excellence from classy fit and finish in all areas, to sound proofing, and work of art electrical and plumping systems.

Projects: Albatro 60 Tender, Albatro 70

North Italian builder Albatro after launching its 50 Tender Open model back in 2006, and updating it last year as the 50 Tender aims to upgrade its Rib Yacht and Cruiser range with a full line up from 45 to 70 feet. Pictured above is the project for the 60 Tender model which will be available in two different styles. For example you can have the 60 in the HT glass hard top or a Fly version as pictured above. Other options are for the aft deck which is available with a large central sun pad, or two C-shaped settees on the sides. Interior layout have not been communicated, but do accept a performing hull with 40 knots plus of top speeds as Albatro usually delivers this in all its models.
The Albatro 70 will be huge step for this builder which builds its current biggest boat at 50 feet. This 70 aims to put a shorter difference as seen by other boats between what is a rib and a yacht. As all rib over a certain size this term is usually the tubes in the sides and this is usually a full glass fibre boat. Although the tubes do in fact deliver a safety feature not found on a standard solid construction. But apart the nearly full glass fibre construction the above rendering does in fact show many yacht like features with deep side bulwarks, a possibility of C-shaped dinette on the fore deck, and the sports flybridge up top. As for the 60, Albatro has so far not confirmed nothing below but they do show some rendering images which suggest a two large cabins layout. Engine choices are for triple 720hp or quadruple 480hp set up propelled to Italian Jolly surface drives.

New Model: Rio 42 Art

Presented in the end of Winter Naples boat show, the North Italian Rio presents the 2010 new 42 Art model. This Rio is a totally new model being on facts longer and fatter to the 42 Art presented three years ago, which actually was an extended model of the 40 Art launched in 2005. The new 42 Art is also powered with stern drive propulsion versus line shaft of the older model. So as we can see this is not a super structure tweak, but a change of substance from Rio who continue to win the hearts of customers by offering good looking Sport Cruisers which have among the most luxurious spaces in their sizes. The 42 Art has many elements which are uncharted territory for many builders, like its huge and very comfortable open cockpit deck. Here you find an L-shaped settee which occupies the port aft part, a relaxing sun pad to fore on the same side, galley wet bar opposite, and helm station to starboard. Below the spaces continue again the theme of open spaces giving an L-shaped galley, settee being horizontal to the ships side, VIP suite to fore, and a full beam mid-ship located owners master stateroom aft. Power is from twin Volvo 330hp engines, with efficient stern drive propulsion.

INBUILD ~ Galeon 780 Crystal Part 2 of 9

We continue our journey in the building phases of Galeon 780 Crystal in its dedicated Inbuild section. The Inbuild series shows how Galeon two feet shy from a Super Yacht size flagship is in the making, from the rendering design showed here in the fall of 2009 to its launching in mid late coming Summer. In this second part you are seeing the deck mould of the 780 Crystal. Covered in plastic this first main deck mould is positioned upside down. Those two boxes are in fact the split level interior main saloon, and the forward raised part represents the area with galley, dining table, and helm station. Further aft you can also see a triangle vertical shape which is the tender garage, which looks to be a similar system to that seen on the 700 Raptor.

New Model: Mano M42,50

South Italy boat builder Mano presents the launch of the much waited M42,50 model. This new model represents a big step for Mano who crosses the over forty feet barrier with a stylish hard top sport cruiser. Choice is a big element of this new Mano Marine flagship as its is available in two lower deck cabins layouts. In choice one you get a four berths in two cabins layout, which gives the owner a full beam mid ship stateroom. Option two which is more family orientated has a six berths three cabin, with the owners suite moving to fore. Below is also space for a galley, and C-shaped settee which will become of L-shape in the three cabins version and can convert to an extra double berth. Tender stowage is in a garage located under the sun pad aft. Up top you also get a C-shaped settee, and another quite large L-shaped exterior galley. This M42,50 hull number one also featured a small standard sized mid ship cabin windows as outlined in the project scheme about a year ago. Hull shape is a medium Vee eighteen degrees closing dead rise aft, and construction method is for an environmentally clean resin infusion method.

Project: Sessa C54 Sport-Coupe

Sessa pulls out a new project for a sixteen metres open yacht, the C54 Sport-Coupe. Coming live in the next Cannes Show in September this new model will continue Sessa vocation as a trend-setter, and ever improving quality coming by, reviving and expand its sport yacht range, what will be a challenge in this size. Designer Christian Grande and Sessa set the tones for a Sport Yacht with closed lounge main deck concept as the C68 flagship, and as recent models continue with striking aggressive looks and so called animal features. Sessa objective is to give the C54 Sport-Coupe the C68 amenities, and as it happens this project mirrors the flagship in many ways combining characteristics of a performing and sporty open, to those of a comfortable, elegant yacht. The C54 Sport-Coupe is also Sessa's fourth generation hull developed for IPS, following the C46, C43 and the 54 Fly. Sessa is one of the few to have used IPS so extensively and in my memory only another Italian yard does in fact uses the Volvo forward looking pods more to this, which made possible to take advantage of an experience to optimise this technology to the full and incorporate better use of volumes. This does in fact deliver a lower deck with three double cabins, including a full beam owner stateroom to mid-ship with separate shower head. A spacious galley is also located on the lower deck, entirely freeing the main saloon for entertainment and lounging having here an eight person guest table, bar, convertible settee which transforms into a sun pad, and the separation glass patio door which makes the C54 a summer and winter sport yacht. There will also be a BBQ area behind the cockpit, a hydraulic stern platform, and a crew cabin which is so welcoming that can also be used for guests. The C54 Sport-Coupe shares a similar hull shape, twin Volvo 700hp engines, and second generation larger IPS pods to the 54 Fly which should also mirror the 32 knots top speeds achieved by Sessa first flybridge yacht.
