A classic twelve meter Hatteras sportfish cruiser titled Lucky Me ended aground and then sank near St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands at around 16:00 of Saturday ninth May. US Coast Guard sector San Juan are monitoring the accident, as the boat also carried around seven hundred litres of diesel fuel. The vessel owner has been required to deploy a containment boom around the vessel, to continuously monitor the discharge of oil from the vessel, to maintain communications with the Federal On-Scene Coordinator, and has also been directed to present a plan to mitigate and remove the threat of any discharge. Ultimately US Coast Guard removed the fuel and most pollutants by Thursday, but the boat remains sunk with a notice to mariners issued for its danger. The cause of this grounding and sinking are not reported.
The boat in this accident is a Hatteras 42 Convertible as designed by Jack Hargraves and produced from 1971 to 1978. The 42 Convertible was a replacement to the 41 Convertible Series I, and was replaced by the Hatteras 43 Convertible Series I.
