4 People 2 Dogs Rescued in Hatteras Yacht Fire at Long Island Sound

Four people and two dogs were rescued as a fifteen meter Hatteras sportfish yacht titled m/y The Cure had an onboard fire North of Plum Gut, Long Island Sound, New York at 15:51 of Saturday first July 2023. Two 63-year-olds and two 24-year-olds, all of Woodmere were aboard the yacht, as it made a "mayday" call on VHF channel 16, with latitude and longitude information. The Southold Town police department's marine patrol immediately proceeded to the area, with additional assistance coming from the Orient Fire Department, United States Coast Guard, Sea Tow, and Connecticut agencies. The Plum Island Ferry and Cross Sound Ferry was also on stand by if further assistance was needed.  The Southold Police department's marine "Marine 2," operated by the Harbourmaster arrived first at the scene and found the vessel smoking with a fire onboard, and rescued the boaters and dogs first, and then started to fight the fire, with the Old Saybrook Fire Department coming after to control the remaining smoke and fire following the activation of the boat's extinguishing system. Ultimately Sea Tow towed the sportfish yacht to Old Field Marina in Old Saybrook. The boaters were all okay and refused any medical assistance, with the cause of the blaze not being reported.
M/y The Cure is a 2001 Hatteras 50 Convertible Series III as designed by Jack Hargrave and produced from 1990 to 2005.  The 50 Convertible Series III is the longest produced Hatteras, although it had a look evolution over the years in its profile windows.  The 50 Convertible Series III was a replacement to the 52 Convertible Mk.II, and was replaced by the Hatteras 54 Convertible Series II.
