Project: CL Yachts CLX99

When Cheoy Lee debuted the CLX96 during the 2022 Fort Lauderdale boat show, the head-turning design and function-fit super yacht showed CL Yachts was not only drawing on its 150-year heritage but was also firmly focused on the future. CLX96’s bold styling came as the result of a decision to look outside traditional yacht design inspiration, and that in turn led the Cheoy Lee to Milan-based yacht designer Jozeph Forakis. That decision was instantly validated when Forakis produced a design that centered on function while emphasizing a brilliantly bold form rooted in rugged workboat ethos, the perfect platform for a modern, go-anywhere cruising yacht. Now Cheoy Lee and Forakis have taken their tour-de-force CLX design a step further with the unveiling of CLX99 project. At first glance, it is clear the new CLX99 draws heavily on her sibling, and not just in styling and design DNA. But this is much more than a facelift with the CLX99 is essentially a new model, which takes the core ethos and essence of the striking and functional CLX96 and carries it further into the realm of the superyacht with more interior volume, more external space, more clever design elements, and more features that have been refined for the demands of European and Asian markets. CLX99 bears the clear rugged-yet-finessed workboat-chic of CLX96 that hints at the yacht’s serious cruising capabilities, but stretches the dimensions of every facet which in turn has created all new areas and opportunities to enhance the general arrangement. The main deck benefits from a two-metre extension, which has led to a reorganisation of the interior space. The lower deck has also been revised and redesigned, with the standard version of CLX99 offering five generous staterooms that include a large, full-beam master suite, two VIP doubles forward, and two guest twin/double cabins, all ensuite. The crew area, located aft between the engine room and the aft bulkhead of the master which means insulation from technical noise from the owner, has also been extended and reconfigured to accommodate up to five crew members, making CLX99 highly suitable for fully crewed charter operations. In addition, clients can opt for a main deck master suite in place of the forward dining and observation lounge, while retaining five suites on the lower deck for a total of twelve guests. Up top, the sundeck, sky lounge and flybridge helm have all been modified to optimize the proportions and further carrying the CLX range into new realms of luxury. Of course, CLX99 retains the trademark Portuguese Terrace of the CLX96, creating an expansive seating and sun bathing area forward of the bridge that serves as a secondary, elevated bow terrace. But the real transformation has taken place aft of the striking, forward-raked windscreen as the sky lounge is extended by three meters repositioning with the helm station separated from the saloon aft. The sky lounge also retains the up/down opening windows; port, starboard and the aft-bulkhead service bar, a signature feature of her smaller sibling. That essence of bringing the outside in is coupled to a reconfigured aft sundeck for alfresco entertaining and chilling. The aft end has also received a major change, with the aft water-level beach and swim platform now boasting large drop down bulwarks that create generous sea terraces either side. The angular styling has always been about capturing the practicality of workboats and taking luxury into new and exciting directions, including offering guests sensational panoramic views from anywhere in the interior. The underlying ethos toward seaworthiness and reliability has been further enhanced on CLX99 with revisions to the technical space. In addition to the extended hull, styling tweaks and layout enhancements, Forakis has also turned his attention to the interior themes and finishes, drawing on sinuous and sensual curves combined with elementary shapes and ideas inspired by nature and coastlines. One thing is clear, just as CLX96 was conceived for life without compromise, so CLX99 takes an uncompromising look at what life on board a superyacht should be, and delivers that experience in all areas from optimized hull design to optimal interior space planning.

Project: Absolute Navetta 53

Absolute present the project for an upcoming Navetta 53 model.  The Navetta 53 is to be a replacement for the long eight years produced Navetta 52 which debuted in 2016 and was the second Navetta range model of more livable type of yachts as offered by Absolute.  As the saying says though, you do not change a winning product, you evolve it into the future, and so this new Navetta 53 is based on many technicalities on the 52, all hull dimensions and layout is mostly the same, as is the twin Volvo 480hp power units coupled to twin IPS pod drives.  So what is changed?  The most important changes in the Navetta 53 come in two areas the stern and the glazing serving the main deck.  The stern of the Navetta 53, just like the bigger Navetta 75 and 70 sisters will feature the glass aft parapet for uninterrupted view which coupled with the modular furnishing give a new meaning to the aft deck.  The second is the glazing for the living main deck, now featuring floor to ceiling windows which with the lowered bulwark offer uninterrupted views from outside to inside.

Strong Winds in Traverse City Partly Sinks Formula Powerboat

Sudden strong winds in Traverse City, Michigan on the afternoon of Sunday thirtieth June partly sank a Formula power boat of eleven meters in length, while a Sea Ray sport cruiser of eight meters also ended beached.  According to locals the North wind came in following a sudden strong storm in the late morning afternoon of Sunday, with the Formula finishing beached and then swamped by the big waves into its stern which build up during the sudden storm.  The Sea Ray sport cruiser is reported to have broken its swing mooring when at Clinch Bay.

British Renaissance

If you mention British pleasure boat and yacht builders the trio of Sunseeker, Princess, and Fairline would come to most people's mind.  But recently two other semi-production boat builders seem to be making in-roads, and these are Cockwells and its Duchy and Hardy brands, and Dale.  Interestingly both these offer something different from what the usual British triplet brings, conservative in looks, with innovation coming more on the technical side.
Founded in 1995 Cockwells should be getting a lot of attention for both its Duchy and Hardy names.  Duchy offers an interesting line of traditional down East inspired models from six to eighteen meters, with both the larger 45 and 60 models being projects.  Of interesting note was the ten meter Duchy Sport an interesting mix of modern sport cruiser and traditional lines which debuted in 2023.  Hardy was purchased by Cockwells in 2020, and in 2023 we are seeing the fruits of this acquisition as the new ownership debuted its first 50DS model.
Dale on the other hand has been a slow grower, founded in 1961, the company made a good step in the nineties as it started a collaboration with TT Boat Designs, the firm which designs the famous Nelson type hull as used in a lot of small and medium sized pilot and patrol boats. The fruits of this collaboration started with the Dale Classic 45 in 2004, and since then Dale has been pushing forward, and in the last years its latest down East inspired products are innovative.  Look at the recently launched Classic 35 and Classic 37 as example.
Are these three brands made to replace the usual British trio.  Definitely not, but they do offer something very British in looks and use, which the boats from the trio today and in the recent decades do not, and most importantly are firms managed by the passionate people who founded them.

Azimut Wins Robb Report Best of the Best 2024

Another award for Azimut's Verve 48 comes from the jury of the Robb Report Best of the Best 2024, which chose this model as the winner of the "Dayboat" category. This important recognition, awarded every year by the American magazine Robb Report, underlines the success achieved by the Verve Series, benchmark in her category and number one in US market share today with over 120 units sold in four years. Azimut's Verve 48 was awarded for "the triple 600-hp Mercury outboards, open exterior, and foldout rear deck” that make it the best dayboat, according to the jury composed of journalists from Robb Report US. The project by Francesco Struglia, designer of the exteriors and interiors of Verve 48, envisages an innovative concept of the sport-weekender, which on the one hand allows the owner to glide over the water while, on the other, to enjoy stays at anchor in full harmony with the sea.

Benetti Second Legal Symposium

The second Legal Symposium, a two-day event for lawyers from some of the top international law firms active in the boatbuilding industry, looked at recent legal topics in the areas of contracts and international compliance together with the Shipyard's in-house legal team and management.  Benetti has always organised events and other initiatives to foster the growth of the yachting market from all points of view, and international contracts are a key factor in the Shipyard’s relationships with customers. This is why Benetti launched its Legal Symposium last year. The second edition of this event was held on June 3 and 4 at Hotel Plaza De Russie in Viareggio, Showroom Franchi Umberto Marmi, Cava Bettogli and Benetti’s Viareggio shipyard. It was attended by over 50 lawyers from the main law firms active in the Italian and international boatbuilding industry.  The heart of the event was a legal discussion in which the guest lawyers and Benetti’s in-house legal team and area sales managers spent an entire afternoon debating the most pressing issues in the yachting world today, such as certain clauses in yacht construction contracts, the implementation of compliance procedures (including Anti Money Laundering - AML) in response to increasingly stringent international laws, and the sustainability of yacht building.  “We’re proud of the success of the second Benetti Legal Symposium,” commented Georgia Agù, Group General Counsel Azimut|Benetti. “This initiative is an opportunity to foster collaboration and sharing of knowledge between international law experts in our industry. We’re convinced that meetings like this are essential to tackle future challenges in an increasingly dynamic and ever-changing legal context.”

To make it even more special, here is the exclusive Invictus Yacht Summer Collection line of accessories, specially designed for owners who want to take the essence of their yacht with them even when they are on land. This collection is not simply a series of products, but a continuous narrative of the Invictus Yacht brand, which extends beyond the yacht itself to embrace a distinctive lifestyle.  “The philosophy that gave life to Invictus Yacht accessories is to tell a story, creating products that reflect the mood and elegance of Invictus yachts,” explains Christian Grande. “Each piece is designed to be used not only on board but also in everyday life, allowing shipowners to express their connection with the sea and the Invictus brand with refined taste always.”  Among the products intended for use on board, there are fenders covered in faux leather that bring to mind the craftsmanship quality of the Italian brand's boat cushions. Lagoon Catamarans and Asiamarine, the Hong Kong-based luxury yacht distributor, brokerage and charter operator, welcomed excited boating enthusiasts to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the French catamaran builder and its appointment as the global brand’s official dealer with a luxurious launch party on June 21, 2024.  Around 100 guests gathered at the Aberdeen Marina Club to celebrate the milestone and new venture and were treated to a tour of one of Lagoon’s most spacious models, the 20.15m Lagoon Sixty 7. As guests roamed the elegantly staged boat, which was decked in a French country theme and decorated in blue and turquoise, the colours of the Lagoon brand, they were able take in wide-open, luxuriously-appointed spaces, from the generous lounge area.  With over 7,000 catamarans built, Lagoon offers a range of models from 40 to 78ft. The Sixty 7, which is now available to charter through Asiamarine, certainly holds a pride of place. As the event progressed, Asiamarine’s Lagoon Brand Manager Alexandre Tricot promised jovial guests that the launch party would be the first of many to come and noted the growing demand for luxury catamarans in the region.  Increasing appetites may well be sated with the arrival of two new models arriving soon. Marlow Yachts Owners Rendezvous 2024

Isn’t it fun to gather with a group of boaters and celebrate how the boating lifestyle is so enjoyable? Not only the excitement of it all, but the stories that come from cruising, from the trials and tribulations of making sure things are in order…and work…to sharing design ideas, recipes, and destination experiences. For a prospective buyer, the information from current Marlow owners is priceless. It can make or break the decision and from what I saw at the 26th Annual Marlow Marine Cruising Club’s (MMCC) Spring Rendezvous at the Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo, Florida, on the 9 to 12 May.   Speaking with a couple who made that commitment two months ago, it was the research, the boat shows, the online videos, and talking with other owners that helped make their decision. They looked at other boats, even toured other shipyards, but in the end, “Some of the things, to me, with the Marlow is the speed, that was a big factor, to have that speed capability,” he says. “And then the draft; the draft was a big factor, too, because it was much shallower than those slower trawler types. And then just the look of it, it just really looks nice and clean…classic.”  One of the biggest benefits I heard from owners was the ample room, not only in the accommodations below (I was impressed with the more than generous headroom), but also in the engine room. You can access both sides of the engines without squatting or ducking or squeezing between equipment.  But the real purpose of this annual event was to reconnect with old friends and welcome new ones as they participate in a bevy of activities.  After a welcome dinner party on opening night Thursday, Friday included morning discussions with Ring Power and Caterpillar engines, Blue Water Desalination, MPI and an update on Internet access while on board, and Dockmate’s latest positioning system.  The afternoon had teams golf carting their way on a scavenger hunt or crews who wanted to try their hand at a cooking class that featured crab cakes, Ocean Reef Club Yellowtail Snapper with Sherry Caper Butter, and the Club’s signature Key Lime Pie—recipes included.  Saturday continued with sponsor seminars from CMC Marine and the Yacht Group to a Marlow Yachts Q&A from the powers that be. The annual rendezvous isn’t complete without christening the latest builds to avoid the wrath of Neptune.  Each night concluded with a very active dinner party, especially Friday night’s “I Grew Up in the 19__’s” costume gala. From the ’50s through the ’80s, the classic styles were on full display. This year’s best costume winner went to the Swinsons with bell bottoms, heels, big hair (and that was his outfit) and her colorful paisley dress with boots made for walking.  It was a fantastic weekend, and by the closing awards dinner, everyone felt part of the family. That’s what is so special about Marlow. From the floor in the yard to the person making sure your yacht is everything you expected, it’s the caring, compassion, and love for the boat that makes choosing a Marlow an easy decision.
