A 93 meter super yacht titled m/y Mayan Queen IV rescued over one hundred migrants some 47 nautical miles off the coast of Greece Pelopenese peninsula southern coast on the early hours of fourteen June. According to conflicting reports three hundred up to 750 migrants may have drowned when an abandoned or stolen North African fishing trawler overturned and capsized. Hellenic Coast Guard reported that they attempted to make contact several times with the trawler, with the migrants refusing both assistance and supplies and replying they want to go to Italy.
The migration crisis in the Central Mediterranean has been ongoing since 1999 reaching its highest number in 2016 and 2014 respectively. The countries mostly involved in this crisis are Italy, followed by Greece and Malta. In 2016 Italy alone recovered and saved the lives of nearly two hundred thousand migrants.
