Ferretti Group Convergence 2021 Digital Edition

The beautiful thing about Convergence, and what makes it a must-go event, is its ability to bring together the best expertise and experience in the yachting world, this time in an online format, so that complex issues can be discussed and clarified in a matter of hours. The subject of the 2021 session, held online on Wednesday November 10, was managing the activities and procedures required after the occurrence of an extraordinary event.  Attending the virtual round table were 108 Captains and Chief Engineers of yachts over 60 feet and ships built by Ferretti Group brands, connected online from all over the world, who engaged with company experts in an interesting and stimulating a debate on a range of issues. According to tradition, the webinar was introduced by Ferretti Group CEO Alberto Galassi and moderated by Stefano de Vivo (CCO). The first speaker was Walter Floris from Lloyd’s, who introduced the subject by presenting statistics on the causes of accidents, with an analysis of the period from 2014 to 2019. The other speakers included Gian Paolo Natale Mariani of RINA, who presented the first real-life case study of a fire incident, after which the discussion revolved around the complex post-event scenario that a captain is required to manage in such cases. It revealed the importance of advance knowledge about both the management aspects defined by the flag administration of the yacht being captained and those of port state jurisdictions and registries. Bruno Padula of shipping agency Luise Associated explained the standard procedure for reporting an extraordinary event in Italy. Lawyer Tom Walters and Senior Master Mariner Mark Thompson from the Crisis Management Team at HFW in London set out their experience assisting owners in the management of extraordinary events, with a special focus on safety of life, the potential impact of the event on the environment, and loss mitigation. Finally, Norberto Croci of RINA presented a case study of a fire that broke out unexpectedly on a boat in storage as a result of lightening.  The meeting was extremely interactive, with captains able to express their doubts and questions, which were answered by the professionals on the panel. Another focus of discussion was insurance policies. Paul Fuller, Claim Manager at Howden Sturge Insurance Broker, explained the differences between the main types of insurance policy and what action insurance companies take in the event of an accident in which the yacht’s certificate is suspended or withdrawn, or in the case of damages deriving from an extraordinary natural event. The event’s partners were RINA, Sleipner, Simrad-Command and Volvo Penta.  The next event will be held in-person later in 2022, with other important topics to explore in the company of industry experts and the captains of Ferretti Group boats.

Gulf Craft Record Breaking Year

Gulf Craft hits new milestone with the opening of a state-of-the-art Experience Centre in Port Rashid, Dubai.  The Gulf Craft Experience Centre is designed to give both UAE and international clientele a hands-on insight into Gulf Craft’s luxury offerings.  Strategically located at Dubai’s Port Rashid, Gulf Craft’s Experience Centre is the first of its kind for the shipyard, underlining the company’s ambition to elevate the yacht buying experience for their clients.  After a record breaking 2021, the opening of the Centre further establishes Gulf Craft as an industry leader in 2022 – which also marks the 40th anniversary of the UAE-based yacht builder.

Gulf Craft Commitment to Ocean Marine Conservation

Gulf Craft, a leading boat and yacht manufacturer, has underlined its commitment to conserving the ocean through its support to the Water Revolution Foundation’s Important Marine Mammal Areas (IMMAs) programme.  The IMMAs programme is the Foundation’s first endorsed ocean conservation project that aims to restore the balance of life in the ocean by identifying the most important habitats for marine mammals and prioritising them for positive conservation actions.  By highlighting the places that most matter to marine mammals, the IMMAs programme addresses the challenge of where to direct conservation resources. This is regarded as among the most effective programmes for the yachting community to support.  Gulf Craft Chairman Mohammed Hussein Alshaali said: “Conserving the marine environment is the responsibility of every stakeholder, and we are strongly committed to initiatives that will help protect the habitats for marine mammals. This is a contribution to the future of the marine environment and reflects our social responsibility. The joy of exploring the high seas is to take delight into the exotic sightings of marine mammals and protecting their habitats must be given top priority.”  He added: “Since its inception, The Water Revolution Foundation has provided the superyacht industry with tools, knowledge and best practices to mitigate the ecological footprint and to promote the conservation of oceans. We are an environmentally and socially responsible institution, and we will continue to explore all opportunities to partner in the global effort to conserve our marine environment for future generations.”  The IMMAs programme is currently focused on the North Atlantic, a heavily trafficked region of the ocean and a popular route for superyachts crossing between the Mediterranean and Caribbean. An existing programme of the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) Task Force on Marine Mammal Protected Areas, IMMAs focuses on prioritising protection measures by governments, intergovernmental organisations, conservation groups, marine stakeholders, and the community.  In addition to supporting the global efforts in conserving the marine environment, Gulf Craft has been a socially responsible company partaking in various sustainability initiatives across the United Arab Emirates. To ensure the well-being of the community, every year, Gulf Craft participates in desert, beach and mangrove clean ups organized by the government or the Emirates Environmental Group, a non-governmental organization that runs a variety of waste management campaigns in tandem with UAE-based businesses.

Gulf Craft Marks Twenty Years in the Maldives

One of the world’s premier boat and yacht manufacturers, Gulf Craft, is marking 20 years of its operation in the Maldives which has played a pivotal role in developing the marine transportation network of the island nation. Gulf Craft provides almost 80% of the Maldives’s water transportation services which includes public transport, coast guard, emergency & ambulance services, resorts, and leisure boats. With a strong and established presence in the country, Gulf Craft is now developing a new production facility dedicated to the manufacturing of vessels for use in the Indian Ocean which will see its operations and production capacity double within 16 months. In early 2021 the shipyard was awarded a government contract, thru MTCC, to manufacture a fleet of specially designed high-quality speed boats for use across the Integrated National Public Ferry Network. The new speed boats will offer a convenient and efficient transportation system to all administrative islands of the Maldives, with capabilities to transport up to 53 passengers at a time and will connect the capital city to nearby islands. The vessels will be equipped with special packages for passengers travelling in emergency situations and will include access for stretchers and people with disabilities. The public transportation project is one of the largest government initiatives and will contribute to connecting the various islands of the Maldives upon completion. Gulf Craft’s Chairman, Mohammed Hussein Alshaali, said: “The Government of the Maldives and its people have constantly been a beacon of support since the establishment of our operations without whom this remarkable feat would not be possible. We are grateful to the Maldives for entrusting Gulf Craft with projects that have played a part in the growth of the nation over these twenty years. The Maldives is our first international destination, where we have built in-country competencies by leveraging the opportunities that the country provides for the marine and tourism sector. With the doubling of our production capacity and the new training facility we hope to serve the local community even better through the creation of new job opportunities and in further boosting tourism.” Gulf Craft established its operations in the Maldives with a 100,000 square foot manufacturing facility that has produced top-quality pleasure boats and rapid transport vessels. Gulf Craft is now focusing on further expansion of its operations in the Maldives to support the government’s strategy to strengthen the tourism sector. This will be driven by doubling its production capacity in the country and by giving back to the community through the new training facility for captains and crew. Last year Gulf Craft announced that it will invest in a strategic development in the Maldives named ‘Gulf Lagoon’. The project will feature a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility, a marina for seafarers and live-aboards, a maritime school offering captain/crew training for young Maldivians, and a resort, among others.

Horizon Banner Year

As 2021 has come to a close and the world welcomes the new year, Horizon Yachts reflects on the success of last year and looks forward to the promise of an active and prosperous 2022.  While the global pandemic has caused its share of uncertainty over the last two years, one unforeseen effect has been the exponential demand for private yachts. This demand, coupled with the unparalleled popularity of the pioneering high-volume Fast Displacement (FD) Series designed by Cor D. Rover, caused a record-breaking surge in sales for Horizon Yachts and prompted the expedition of a $15M yard expansion to both increase and streamline production.  The expansion was a project two years in the making that focused on production efficiency throughout the Group’s four facilities and included the re-designation of existing workspaces to achieve an efficient horizontal production queue. Now each critical stage of construction – from hull production to boat assembly and final testing – can be carried out in the new space that accommodates seven yachts up to 120 feet in length at one time. Unveiled in February 2021, the first phase of the expansion allows the group to deliver up to 25 new builds per year. Phase II includes the construction of a new office building for the yard’s headquarters, which is expected to be completed in early 2022.  The year heralded a steady flow of sales and deliveries, with both existing and new Horizon clients calling meetings to discuss customizing their next dream yacht. Horizon delivered a total of 18 new build yachts globally in 2021, including eight FD models over 80 feet in length and ten sub-80ft yachts including five Power Catamarans, two FD motor yachts, two E Series motor yachts, and one V68 new build.  In-person events were limited during the year to ensure the health and safety of all guests, but each Horizon office either hosted or exhibited to meet the demand from new and potential clients eager to see the latest yacht inventory. Horizon Yacht USA hosted a private invitation-only Winter Showcase at its Fort Lauderdale marina location and enjoyed successful exhibitions at both the Palm Beach and Fort Lauderdale boat shows.  Horizon Yacht Australia received record attendance at the Sanctuary Cove Boat Show in the spring and hosted an intimate owners’ luncheon and cruise in the Whitsunday Islands. Horizon Yacht Europe welcomed potential and current clients on an individual basis and plans to exhibit the brand new builds at the Palma, Cannes and Monaco yacht shows in 2022.  All of the activity for 2021 has not waned and as the days march into 2022, the Horizon Yachts team worldwide is preparing for an exceptionally busy new year with an already full schedule and production line-up in place. In the new year, Horizon plans to continue its commitment to exceeding the expectations of current and new clients, whether they are looking for their first yacht or an upgrade to a newer or larger model. The entire team is deeply appreciative of the strong Horizon family that is gathering worldwide and looks forward to another year of defining owners’ dreams.

Horizon Ocean Conservation Commitment

Horizon Yachts is among the first of the world’s leading yacht builders to demonstrate a commitment to ocean conservation with the Water Revolution Foundation.  Joined by other prominent shipyards including Lurssen, Oceanco, Heesen Yachts, Feadship, and Royal Huisman, Horizon Yachts has committed to the establishment of a structural approach for reinvestment into ocean conservation that is based upon the Gross Tonnage (GT) of yachts they deliver. Each yard has committed to contributing €1 per gross ton delivered per year. The builders that have committed thus far have delivered nearly 60,000 GT in 2021.  The Water Revolution Foundation was formed from within the yachting industry as a means to enact tangible steps to preserve the world’s oceans while reducing yachting’s footprint and environmental impact. Funds collected by The Water Revolution Foundation are donated in their entirety to Important Mammal Marine Areas (IMMAs), a program of the International Union for Conservation of Nature Task Force on Marine Mammal Protected Areas. This program seeks to identify areas that are important to marine mammals and prioritize their protection through governmental, intergovernmental and conservation group measures.  With 159 IMMAs already established across the Southern Hemisphere, the scientists behind the IMMA program are now looking to the Northern Hemisphere. In total, there are nine regions of the ocean still to be mapped. The North Atlantic is next, which is the common crossing route for yachts and superyachts between the Mediterranean and Caribbean seasons. The funds collected in 2022 will go toward the €550,000 target goal needed to start the two-year North Atlantic IMMA project.  This initiative coincides with the United Nations’ 2021 declaration of the “Ocean Decade,” a ten-year global emphasis on catalyzing transformative ocean science solutions for sustainable development.  The Water Revolution Foundation is the latest in Horizon Yacht’s attention to quality manufacturing standards and environmental conservation that began with the ISO 9002 certification of each of the company’s five manufacturing facilities and includes the continuous innovations by Atech, the Group’s advanced composites manufacturing division. From its foray into environmentally sustainable yacht design and construction to its low-VOC, patented SCRIMP and now resin vacuum 6D Infusion® technology, Horizon continues to be a pioneer in environmentally sound and efficient design and construction methods producing innovative, lightweight and durable hulls that improve performance while lowering fuel consumption.  “As manufacturers, we have a responsibility to produce with our clients, our employees and our environment in mind,” says Horizon Yachts Founder and CEO John Lu. “Since 1987 we have been committed to implementing innovations and technologies that enhance the yachts we build and advance the yacht building industry in general, while remaining true to our mission to produce responsibly. To join with a significant number of yacht builders in this initiative with The Water Revolution Foundation is testament that the global yachting industry shares in this mission.”
