New Model: Riva 102 Corsaro Super

In the brand’s 180th anniversary year, Riva confirms its extraordinary creative vitality and incomparable style by launching the new 102 Corsaro Super, a dazzlingly beautiful three deck super yacht with a completely rethought design and spaces to enjoy in comfort and conviviality. Entering the water in Riva La Spezia shipyard where models in the 76 to 130-foot range are built, the new yacht is the magnificent successor to the 100’Corsaro, one of the popular sellers in recent years sold in a reported sixteen units in a four year production run. With peerless originality and class, the new Corsaro Super has even more impressive dimensions: 102 feet of majesty and new style accents that breathe life into an unprecedented masterpiece of yacht design, ready to leave a glorious mark in the history of the flybridge range. The new features of the Corsaro Super are once again the work of since 1992 Riva designers Mauro Micheli and Sergio Beretta of Officina Italiana Design, working in partnership with the Strategic Product Committee led by Mr. Piero Ferrari and the Ferretti Group Engineering Department. The many new features include the design of the superstructure and the hull, which have both been completely renewed based on a contemporary sport concept that sees direct contact with the water as the supreme pleasure of going to sea. The new Riva 102 Corsaro Super is over thirty meters in length overall and has a beam of almost seven. Her distinctive silhouette reaches out like an arrowhead, giving the yacht a sleek and assertive profile. Aft, new glass fashion plates improve the vessel's aerodynamics. New dimensions and optimized spaces revolutionize how time is spent on board. Functionality, maximum livability and ever more direct contact with the water are the guiding principles behind all the new features, such as the option to install special gunwales that swing out on either side of the main deck to create exclusive terraces with a panoramic view, increasing the volume of the external walkways without affecting the vessel’s elegant profile. With three decks and five cabins for ten guests, the promise of the new Corsaro Super is to dominate the sea, not only from almost one hundred square meters of livable open-air spaces, but also from the interiors, thanks to over 140 square meters of magnificent glazing and glass surfaces that reduce the barriers to visual contact with the natural world. In more detail, the glazing in the owner suite has been redesigned and extended to two meters in length from the 100 Corsaro, amplifying the sense of space that is a distinctive feature of the widebody configuration and offering a breathtaking view on both sides of the yacht. One of the highlights of the 102 Corsaro Super, is the complete redesign of the stern area on the main deck. This entire space will be configured as an extended 35-square-metre beach club dedicated to conviviality and comfort. The interior design also features some major innovations. In the main living area, two different layouts are available for the owner to choose from. The first has a focus on the dining space, with a table seating eight in the stern area, while the lounge is central and maintains visual contact with the outside world through extensive windows that open onto the lateral walkways. In the second layout, the lounge and large sofas are in the area first encountered on entering the saloon, while the dining space is central. The interior décor juxtaposes original textures that express the yacht’s unmistakable personality and appeal. The dominant wood is Canaletto walnut. Its warm tones are set off by the innovative pairing with satin effect titanium ceilings or, alternatively, by the introduction of glass surfaces and cool colors. The new Riva 102’ Corsaro Super is powered by twin 2435hp for a top speed of 26 knots, while optional 2638hp give a bump of plus two knots to reach 28 knots. Aldready five units of the Riva 102 Corsaro Super are reported sold with the model set to debut in September at 2022 Cannes boat show.

Project: Heesen 5700 Aluminium Project Akira

Heesen has started the construction of YN 20457, Project Akira, beginning at the Oss shipyard on February nine, formally witnessed by the American Bureau of Shipping surveyor. Project Akira is the first in a new class of high-speed alumimium yachts by Heesen. At 57 meters, with an enclosed volume of approximately 780 GT, she sports a lightweight ultra-efficient FDHF hull that will give her a top speed of 22 knots with twin MTU engines.  The all-alumimium hull is the latest refinement of the patented Fast Displacement Hull Form, devised by Dutch hydrodynamicists Van Oossanen and further engineered by Heesen’s naval architects. Thanks to her low-drag underwater body, Akira is fast yet highly economical, needing less power and using up to half the fuel of a conventional steel displacement yacht of the same size. Thanks to her shallow draft of just 2.3 meters, she is also a go-anywhere yacht, perfect for the crystal clear waters of the Bahamas or shallow inshore anchorages in the Mediterranean.  For this new breed of yacht, Heesen appointed long-term partner Frank Laupman of Omega Architects for the exterior design. Her lines are characterized by a shapely profile, a gently raked bow, and bold fashion plates. A standout feature is the distinctive scalloped transom to increase the size of the large fixed swim platform, which will make her instantly identifiable in any marina.  When it came to Akira’s 400 sqm of luxury interior space, Heesen's engineering department worked with Harrison Eidsgaard from the very beginning to develop the general arrangement – a decision that led to a step-change in the way the design was approached.  The interior décor allows Akira’s owners to express their taste and customize the yacht to fit their lifestyle. Twelve guests are accommodated in six suites. The 63 sqm owner’s stateroom occupies the main deck forward and comprises a study, the bedroom with his-and-hers closets, and a full-beam bathroom with bathtub and shower stall. Four double suites are found on the lower deck, while the VIP cabin is up on the bridge deck. All decks are served by the glass elevator. Outdoor spaces are carefully conceived to offer the ultimate experience of life at sea. Large windows create connectivity between indoors and out. From dining al fresco on the upper aft terrace, to the vast sundeck with its jacuzzi, and from the forward seating area on the bridge deck down to the beach club, owners and guests will always find the perfect place to relax.  Project Akira is scheduled for delivery in Spring 2024.

Medicane in Corsica 2022

A fierce storm with hurricane strong winds hit Corsica on the morning of Thursday eighteen August.  The worst hit was the West and Northern part of Corsica with winds reaching record speeds of 121 knots, this recorded at Marignana to the West of Corsica.  The same storm also hit the North Tyrrhenian sea particularly the region of Tuscany couple hours later.  Over five hundred boats and yachts received some damage, with about one hundred of these receiving extensive damage which made them unusable to use before repairs are done.  Some of these unusable boats and yachts also ended up beached or sank and are a wreck.  Six people where reported dead in Corsica with three dying in Italy because of the storm with one of these being related to boating.
The 2022 Mediterrean Summer season was particularly hot, with sea temperatures reaching thirty degrees at the beginning of August, result is that a medium strong cold front ends turning in a Medicane, a Mediterrean Hurricane.  Storms like this has happened in the past, possibly of lower intensity, but it is also important to note that our weather reading has become much more precise and sophisticated in recent years.  Being in high season and Corsica a popular destination created the right dooms day environment for all this chaos to happen.
A Mondomarine Arrow 50 is seen before sinking outside the Saint Florent marina.  Designed by Cichero the Mondomarine Arrow was released in 1984 first as 52 and then rebadged as 50.  The model was produced till 1992 with an Open version released on the same hull in 1987.
This eighties Raffaelli Middle Flying mt 12 was a lucky one at Saint Florent who ended starboard side on the South West breakwater of the harbor, while a sail boat unknowingly pulled him to the middle of the marina before the boat suffered further damage, and possibly a sinking.
A Princess V53 is seen beached in Calvi the worst hit area with tens of boats, most of which sailing yachts finishing beached.  In Calvi most of the swing moorings failed with boats ending up hitting each other, with the end result being tens of boats and yachts damaged.
Another Calvi victim here a Beneteau Swift Trawler 34 ended in a difficult beaching, in between rocks and extensive damage to its bow.
Possibly this was the worst damage in a beach near Calvi where this Cranchi E52 F Evoluzione has separated from its upper deck and had its hull split in two.  Forward to this was also a beached Beneteau Antares 9.80.
An Absolute got some damage to starboard stern side when a classic sailing yacht broke its moorings in Marina di Carrara in Tuscany.  Important damage in Carrara also happened to dry stacked racing sail yachts, which flew off there cradle.  The World beating Maserati trimaran of Giovanni Soldini also sustained damage in this storm.

Yacht Aground in Ses Illetas, Formentera

A 22 meter Astondoa motor yacht finished beached on the morning of eighteen August, in Ses Illetas, Formertera.  The cause of the beaching are unknown but a storm hit the island between the night of seventeen and eighteen August morning, and with this the anchor being down I suspect the yacht dragged.  Located on the North of the Formentera, Ses Illetas is rather unique open beach with sand and view uninterrupted to East and West.
The yacht in this accident is an Astondoa 72 GLX designed by Nuvolari Lenard and produced from 1998 to 2007.  Astondoa sold over forty first generation 72 GLX before the model was replaced by the 76 in 2008.  This is the third Astondoa 72 GLX reported in an accident this Summer, with a sister-ship burning down in Costa Rica in early July, and another having control troubles in Girona and hitting boats and the jetty earlier in August.

New Model: Fjord 53 XL

Fjord has just launched its new 53 XL flagship model, currently undergoing final testing in Port Adriano in Mallorca.  The Fjord 53 XL is a development of the 52 Open launched in 2019 which is also a further evolution of the 48 Open presented in 2015.  The Fjord 53 XL is recognizable from the 52 Open by the larger hull glazing, but is also longer with some layout changes both outside and inside.  A walk around sport yacht full of day boat attributes from fore to aft, the 53 XL offers nonetheless a spacious cabin lower deck accommodation layout with two cabins and single en-suite head, with the optional choice for a second head and for a crew cabin replacing a void storage room to port side.  Choices are also available for the exterior with the option to change the bench style dinette, with a C-shaped layout version.  The Fjord 53 XL is standard powered by twin Volvo 550hp, and or optional 600hp with IPS pod drives.

Project: Sirena 78

Sirena is thrilled to announce the 78 project designed by Cor. D Rover and set to debut at the 2022 Cannes boat show in September. The Sirena 78 will offer distinctive features that set her apart from the competition, designed to be a do-it-all explorer yacht that excels as an entertainment platform as she does on longer-range voyages. The yacht will also be noteworthy for her unique interior and exterior layout options and in particular, the option to offer a second saloon with the enclosed bridge option. The Sirena 78 has myriad points of attraction from a design standpoint that should attract a wider range of buyers. Her flying bridge is available in three options; open, semi-enclosed or fully enclosed formats. Each of the Enclosed iterations benefits from super-sized windows that let in natural light and also allow for excellent views. Sirena decided to offer these options as today the Turkish builder is a World brand offering its yachts in a variety of locales with differing climates. For both the Enclosed bridge versions the 78 will be absent of a main-deck helm station, which opens up space in that area for entertaining, this adding space and room to relax and socialize on the main deck. The centerpiece on the main-deck’s interior will be a massive galley that proves the model as an entertainment ace. There, an enormous island provides loads of counter space that makes entertaining easy and also makes food prep a cinch. A deep sink, extra stowage, and full-size appliances round out the galley. Sirena’s new 78 will also have a revolutionary loose-furniture concept.  Pieces of furniture such as settees will be able to be arranged nearly anywhere, in this way, the layout of the Sirena 78 is ever-changing and customizable, looking different within the space or the use of the moment. Down below accommodation offers four cabins plus the choice of two or one crew cabin. A full-beam, amidships master cabin with a private bath and dressing area is dedicated to the owner, while to fore is the VIP suite. Lastly, the 78 will have a unique foredeck area featuring a massive sun-pad flanked by tables to port and starboard accompanied by L-shaped settees. The Sirena 78 is the current second largest Sirena following the 88 launched in 2018, and is in a sweet spot for maximum size owner-operators. The Sirena 78 is to be powered by standard twin Man 1400hp good for 23 knots max, with larger optional choices of 1550hp or 1800hp available. With the large engines choice top speed goes up to two knots, while optimum fast cruise is at sixteen knots, a a nine knots long range with all engines.

Yacht Goes on Fire in Fort Lauderdale Yacht Club

An eighteen meter motor yacht titled Blaze went on fire at about 16:00 hours of Tuesday sixteen August at Lauderdale Yacht Club.  Crew from Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue where immediately on the spot to control and fight the fire from both land and water.  The fire fighting was a success as the yacht sustained minimum damage.  The fire reportedly started to starboard of the main deck behind the helm station.  No one was injured in the fire.
M/y Blaze is a Hampton 600 Motor Yacht as produced from 2005 up to 2017. The Hampton 600 shared hull with the 660 Cockpit Motor Yacht, and was replaced by the 650 in 2018.

Explorer Yacht Ends Beached in Cannigione

A sixteen meter explorer yacht ended up beached while at anchor in Cannigione beach in the Arzachena gulf in North Sardinia on the night of fifteen August at around 2200 hours.  The yacht was unattended at the time of the accident when a strong North East wind entered the bay and dragged it to the soft rock area of the Cannigione beach.  The yacht was saved later in the night and morning of sixteen August and taken to a marina for inspection of damage.  It was reported that some smaller boats where also damaged near Porto Cervo in the Eastern part of Sardinia.
The explorer yacht in this accident is an Estensi Maine 530 as designed by Zuccheri and produced from 2006 till 2015 in 35 units.  The Estensi Maine 530 was evolved and replaced by the 535 with new hull windows in 2016.

New Model: Solaris Power 40 Open

Solaris Power has seen an interesting evolution, starting up with the traditional yacht down-east inspired 55/57 Lobster in 2019, the 48 Open presented a year later was the model which changed the trend, and after that the Italian company has been pushing on its traditional inspired center console sport cruisers and yachts.  After the 48 Open in early 2020, came the 44 in 2021, and now in 2022 we have the new entry level 40 Open model. Like the 44 and 48 before her, the 40 Open is primary about exterior spaces, usable thanks to the safe and deep walkaround from fore to aft.  It is an interesting machine where the entertainment spaces outside seem never ending in a size of just over eleven meters.  But the Solaris 40 Open does not stop here, and below also offer a sleeping accommodation for two thanks to a nice island berth, with a spacious shower head to starboard.  At midships in standard format is an utility room, which can be ordered as a cabin with two twin berths.  The Solaris Power is stern drive powered from twin petrol gas 280hp up to diesels of 440hp.
Technical Data:

Flybridge Cruiser Beached After Hitting Fish Rock Creek

An eleven meter Riviera Sportfish cruiser hit Fish Rock creek and was beached to avoid sinking on the morning of fifteen August.  The Riviera cruiser was on a delivery trip by a professional skipper departing from Port Macquarie to the Gold Coast on the West side of Australia, where from there the new owners had to helm her to North Queensland. Unfortunately that was not the case. Salvaging operations where ongoing the day after on the sixteen August.
The Riviera in this accident is a 36 Single Cabin model produced from 1998 up to 2004, selling in 108 units.  Called that way for its single cabin layout, the 36 SC was based on the 34 Open Flybridge platform released a year earlier.

Project: Astondoa 677 Coupe

Astondoa present the project for the 677 Coupe, an evolution of the 655 Coupe, which launched in 2018 also marked the first century of the family run Spanish boat builder from Alicante.  The 677 Coupe will keep the hull lines of the previous model but the super structure is changed now to feature a fore deck with a dinette and coming with a cleaner look to the hard-top, which is now more streamlined and sporty.  Also in the 677 Coupe Astondoa has decided to remove the solarium on top of the hard-top structure and with it the stylish but may be a bit too busy side steps which lead to this area on the 655.  The Astondoa 677 is available in two layouts; galley up with four double guest cabins below, or three cabins with lower deck galley and a main deck saloon all dedicated to entertainment.  The Astondoa 677 Coupe is standard powered with Volvo 1000hp with IPS pod propulsion which will give a top speed up to 34 knots, with Man 1400hp on traditional line shafts available as option.

Princess Yacht Ends Beached in Calvi After Storm

A 26 meter Princess super yacht named m/y Vista Me ended beached on Calvi Beach in Corsica during a storm on the night between Friday twelfth and Saturday thirteen August.  The storm with gale winds and torrential rains, reached forty knots or Force Eight Beaufort scale winds.  Vista Me cut its swing mooring lines, and along with six other sailing yachts ended beached on Calvi Beach.  Twelve hours after the storm all yachts with the exception of Vista Me where refloated by SNSM voluntary corps, with the Princess super yacht needing further inspection and work for refloating to minimize further damage.
M/y Vista Me is a 2019 Princess Y85 as designed by Pininfarina for exterior and naval architecture by Olesinski and produced from 2019 so far in 32 units.  The Princess Y85 received a full hull window update in 2022, with the model coming out as a replacement to the Y88.

New Model: Benetti B.Yond 37m

In an emotional and awaited ceremony held on July 4 at the Livorno shipyard, Benetti launched the brand’s new four-deck B.Yond 37m.  Worth to add this ceremony was emotional in many ways first of all because this was the last project of Stefano Righini before he left to the better World on October 2021, and second because of  the innovation the B.Yond 37m represents.  Unlike Benetti of recent years in this size B.Yond 37m is build of steel, with an alumimium super structure. Steel metal represented a huge step in the success of Benetti onwards of the 1950s, with most of the custom Italian yards of the time still building of wood. The B.Yond 37m is innovative for its E-Mode Hybrid system by Siemens Energy which makes it possible to optimize on-board energy consumption according to specific usage profiles, which translates into unprecedented CO2 and NOx emissions reductions for a yacht in this category. The B.Yond 37M is the world’s greenest boat in its class, combining SCR catalytic filters, a gas control technology that uses a urea-based liquid solution already adopted in the automotive industry for Euro 6D diesel engines, with the innovative E-Mode Hybrid system by Siemens Energy, which is based on a crew-friendly integrated add-on architecture built on top of a traditional system. The result is extremely simple management, with switching possible from mechanical to electric propulsion and vice versa without the intervention of specialized personnel on board. This innovative solution offers the freedom of four different operating modes, including the standout Full Electric mode for zero emission navigation, an exclusive plus that allows B.Yond 37M to enter protected marine areas or those normally off-limits to motor yachts. The lithium battery pack also makes it possible to stay at anchor in Hotel Mode with zero emissions, keeping the generators switched off and running the main on-board utilities from the batteries. This translates into time spent at anchor in harmony with nature, immersed in vibration-free silence. With the new generation of high energy density batteries, the 300 kW/h pack will provide up to 8 hours of autonomy at anchor during the day and 12 hours at night. The batteries recharge in just three hours. Estimating an average annual use of 1,000 hours, of which 400 under way and the rest at anchor, fuel consumption and CO2 can be reduced by up to 24% and NOx by a maximum of 85%. All this plus the added value of an incredible range almost double that of traditional explorer super yacht of the same size, or up to 8,200 nautical miles at 9 knots in Eco Transfer mode, with the two diesel-generators switched off and only one propulsion engine running, which reduces fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by up to 16% and NOx emissions by up to 80% compared with traditional propulsion systems. The B.Yond 37m comes from a revolutionary concept devised by Stefano Righini, who brings all his creative flair into play, features the inclusion of a fourth deck, which makes it possible to raise all the most noble areas of the yacht and gives them an incredible panoramic view. The service area on the Lower Deck includes a walk-in wine cellar and a cold room, unusual features on a boat this size. The Main Deck provides the night area for guests, offering four suites accessed from a panoramic lounge featuring generous windows, which Benetti calls the Playroom. Stepping up onto the Upper Deck, the living area offers a completely unobstructed 360-degree view. Moving up still further, the Bridge Deck is set aside for the owner, while the Sun Deck provides a dining area with a pantry and an outdoor table sheltered by a hard top. Two stairways, one for guests and one for crew, provide completely separate flows, ensuring total privacy for both owner and guests. The layout is extremely flexible: the Main Deck, in addition to four guest suites that are particularly spacious for a 37-meter yacht, can optionally contain either the master cabin or the Playroom with a panoramic view. The Bridge Deck can accommodate, on request, either the master cabin or a panoramic veranda. On the Lower Deck, the gym can be replaced by a sixth guest cabin. Another important new feature is the double accommodation solution for the captain, with a full-size cabin adjacent to the wheelhouse and another very spacious one adjoining the crew quarters. If the captain chooses to use the cabin closest to the wheelhouse, the other one could become a seventh guest cabin. The spacious garage contains a 6.5-meter tender for the owner, a 4.2-meter rescue boat and two jet skis, for the first time in a protected and out of sight area. The white steel hull and aluminum superstructure express the personality and elegance of B.Yond 37M, complemented by stainless steel railings also painted white and finished with teak handrails, in an unusual but highly effective stylistic feature. The hull was designed by Pierluigi Ausonio’s firm P.L.A.N.A. Open and spacious, the interior design by Benetti architect Mauro Izzo offers even more potential for customization, allowing the owner to express their own taste and personality on a yacht to live on as if it were a second home. This spirit has been captured to perfection by leading contemporary design brand Giorgetti, chosen by Benetti to provide the furnishings for the first B.Yond 37M, with solutions that accommodate all the owner’s requests in an embodiment of beauty and functionality expressed through haut de gamme quality. The fine materials chosen feature a palette of natural colors, enhanced by touches of blue provided by the fabrics and accessories, standing out against the optical white walls and echoing the color of the sea. Giorgetti’s refined and sophisticated language runs through all the yacht’s decks, telling the story of the brand’s prowess in designing spaces that form part of an overarching vision.  The Benetti B.Yond 37m was already a success with eight units sold and under construction before hull one even touched the water in July.

Storm Hits Eolian Islands, Yacht Ends Beached in Aque Calde

A storm hit the Eolian island and Southern part of the Tyrrhenian sea on the early morning of Friday twelfth August at about 05:00 hours.  Result of this a dozen of cruisers and yachts ended up beached in Vulcano, with the worst hit being m/y Mambu a nineteen meter motor yacht beached in Aque Calde located on the North East part of the island.  Carrying twelve passengers at the time of the accident including two kids and a pregnant woman, the motor yacht made rescue operations rather difficult with the area where it beached being shallow and rocky.  Rescue operations where being handled by two Coast Guard boats the CP 2203 and CP 271, and a plane from the Catania Guardia Costiera operations unit.  Some minor injuries to persons where reported in this storm with the worst being a helmsman of a sailing yacht which felt sick.  Salvage operation for the nineteen meter motor yacht has been difficult due to its location.
M/y Mambu is a Cantieri Navali Liguri Ghibli 19 produced from the end eighties till about the mid nineties to order. The Ghibli 19 was mostly build to order in mahogany planking exterior and lamellar marine ply interior.
An Arturo Stabile Stama 28 also ended up beached in the Spiagia delle Sabbie Nere on the North West part of the island but reported to have sustained minor damage.

New ISA Super Yacht Burns Down in Formentera

M/y Aria SF a new one month old ISA 45 meter super yacht burned down in Cala Soana, Formentera, near Ibiza on Thursday 11 August at about 1700 hours.  The super yacht had nine guests and seven crew at the time of the fire, with the Spanish coast guard sending immediately two rescue boats for assistance.  None of the guests where injured.  Initial attempts to control the fire where unsuccessful, with the super yacht remaining ablaze for more then 24 hours.  After the fire a salvage boat from Salvamento Maritimo was towing Aria SF, with the yacht located in Cap Martinet, when this operation was abandoned and the owner taking charge of the salvage, with the yacht sinking a day later on the fourteen August in twelve meters of depth.  The cause of the fire are not yet reported but neighbouring boats reported of hearing explosions some minutes before they saw the yacht burning.
M/y Aria SF is the first ISA Yachts GT 45m, ordered in 2019 and completed in June 2022, to a design by Enrico Gobbi with interior by Luca Dini. Ara SF is reported owned by Italian car components businessman Paolo Scudieri, with this ISA Yachts GT 45 planned to debut at the Cannes 2022 boat show.  A second GT 45 is currently under construction set for delivery in 2023.

Project: Boston Boatworks Daychaser 48

After fifteen years of service, tens of thousands of outings, the use of third partly build boats, a demand for a larger more open vessel  has pushed Barton and Gary to design there own Daychaser 48. With help coming from Zurn design, and being built at Boston Boatworks known for building the MJM line, the Daychaser 48 offers full deck use from fore to aft, while a cabin below offers a single berth, shower head, and an office space. The idea here is to have a dedicated traditional down East lobster boat build for the purpose of club membership. It will be interesting to see if the Daychaser 48 will stay in the area or will become something more. Powered by twin Cummins 550hp with Hamilton jet propulsion the Daychaser 48 is expected to reach a top speed up to 35 knots.  Hull one is expected to launch in 2022, with other hulls following in order to renew the Barton and Gray fleet.
