Two Super Yachts a Dock a Boat Crash in Aventura Florida

A thirty meter Ferretti yacht has collided into a dock first and then a seven meter boat by the Turnberry Property, in Aventura, Florida on the night of Sunday first December.  But this story has much more then a captured mobile phone video shows, as the thirty meter was reportedly hit by a bigger yacht which lost power during manoeuvring operation, and raptured its mooring lines freeing it from its dock, creating a chain reaction of events as the thirty meter was pushed in the water uncontrolled and unchecked impacting with the dock and then the small boat.  The first super yacht which lost power and hit the thirty meter Ferretti is not reported. Fortunately no one was injured in this collision as Aventura Police and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is leading the investigation into this two super yacht a dock and one boat crash.
The yacht in this collision is a Ferretti Custom Line 100 as designed by Zuccon and produced from 2011 to 2014 in twelve units.  The 100 introduced the semi-wide body layout into the Custom Line range, with a similar layout and design then used for the Custom Line 108.

The Americas Cup AC75 Problem

The 37th Americas Cup held off the waters of Barcelona has come and gone.  It was an interesting series of races ten days short of two months which started on 29 August with the Louis Vuitton challenger series, and ended on 19 October with the Kiwis keeping the cup for a third time in row.  With this win Team New Zealand is not only the defender with the most wins since the cup started changing hands after the Australia II win in 1983, but also the most successful defender of the cups second era.  The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron has since that first win in 1995 created a dominant pattern of being the new Americas Cup guardian.

The racing of the 37th Americas Cup was intensive, especially the Louis Vuitton Cup Final nail biting affair up till the fifth day between Britannia and Luna Rossa.  The problem though in all these races seems to have been in the AC75 series of yachts, which in this edition mark the second cup they were used following their debut in 2021.

The AC75 are impressive fast sailing foiling machines but come with a problem for close and real match racing, the turbulence.  This turbulence gives a rather big advantage to the leading yacht, even if the following yacht is charging at higher speed and has a better angle to the wind.  Even in the very close affair of the Louis Vuitton Cup Final, when Britannia charged in front it remained there, when Luna Rossa was first it was the same story.  The few over taking that we saw was a split affair.  The turbulence is real and affects both upwind and down wind legs.

In all races even when a yacht had a known advantage of speed, close overtaking seemed impossible when the following yacht was around and under the one hundred meter distance to the leader.

Team New Zealand has announced that the AC75 will still be the racing class of yacht for the upcoming 38th edition, although this overtaking issue needs to be addressed in order for the races to be called real match racing, rather then just a speed race.

Match racing is one of the most interesting aspects of sail racing a one versus one with two competitors going head to head, a type of challenge which debuted in the Third Americas Cup of 1871.  It will take over sixty years and up to 1937 for the sail racing community to take note when the Omega Gold Cup was held in the one design six meter class of yachts.  For many this is the real debut of match racing, as this is held in identical one design boats, unlike the box design of the Americas Cup which gives advantage to the faster boat rather then the sailing choices and expertise of the crew.

That is why in the Americas Cup, 'There is no second'. Although fair to say this phrase was used in the first edition of the cup of 1851, a fleet race between sixteen schooner yachts when the Queen Victoria of England asked Marquis of Anglesey who sat at her right, ‘Who is it in first place, my lord?’ ‘The yacht America’ asked the Queen, ‘Then who is in second?’ The Marquis, in a restrained voice for his Queen, answered softly, ‘Madam, there is no second.’

-potm- Azimut-Benetti Group Chairman Wins Entrepreneur of the Year

Azimut Winner at Boat Builder Awards 2024

Azimut has been awarded at the prestigious Boat Builder Awards 2024 in the “Collaborative Solution between a Builder and its Supply Chain Partner” category, together with Volvo Penta.  The award, organized by IBI and METSTRADE, was presented to the winners on Wednesday, 20 November by the jury, which recognized the innovative nature of the technology developed by Volvo Penta and piloted for the first time in collaboration with the R&D Department of the Azimut|Benetti Group.  Through this project, the two companies introduced the first hybrid-electric version of the Volvo Penta IPS Drive on the new Azimut Seadeck 7. The revolutionary hybrid-electric package, installed for the first time on board this yacht, allows her to moor and sail in fully electric mode at speeds of up to 11 knots, smoothly switching between electric and thermal motors without the need for an onboard generator. The Hybrid Boost enables more powerful acceleration, while the energy recovery system allows for regeneration while sailing, and the fast charging mode enables quick battery recharges through the use of thermal engines. During anchorage, the onboard batteries power all onboard services for up to 12 hours, offering an intimate and completely silent experience at sea. The system also facilitates access to zero-emission zones, fully respecting the environment.  Thanks to this new hybrid-electric system and advanced naval architecture, Azimut's Seadeck 7 allows discerning owners to achieve a reduction in emissions of up to 40%, representing the pinnacle of solutions currently available to lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.  “We are honoured to have been recognized with the Boat Builder Awards," said Marco Valle, CEO of Azimut|Benetti Group. "By incorporating the Volvo Penta hybrid-electric package on the Seadeck 7, we are pioneering hybridization in boats of this segment, while enhancing efficiency and ensuring seamless operation in yachting. This innovative solution not only reduces consumption and emissions, but also enhances the onboard experience for our customers. We are proud to be at the forefront of an evolution that will have a positive impact on both our waters and our owners”.  “We are proud to have been recognized together with Azimut in our efforts to drive innovation forward on the path towards decarbonization within the marine industry,” said Johan Inden, President of the Marine Business at Volvo Penta. “Collaborating with like-mind pioneers is an essential aspect of shaping the future boating experience. In this pilot, we are demonstrating a winning combination of unique technology and cutting-edge yacht design – designed to drive efficiency, performance, and elevate the overall experience.”

Azimut-Benetti Group Chairman Wins Entrepreneur of the Year Award

Giovanna Vitelli, Chair of Azimut|Benetti Group, is the National Winner of the twenty-seventh edition of the EY Entrepreneur of the Year® Award. The independent jury, composed of representatives of institutions, economics and industry, awarded the prestigious recognition to Giovanna Vitelli for “not only  directing the company  towards growth in size and profitability, but also for inspiring technological advancements and projects focused on sustainability, employee well-being and corporate social responsibility.” A recipient for the award is selected each year by EY – global leader in professional services for auditing and accounting, tax and legal assistance, transactions, and consulting – among Italian entrepreneurs who have contributed to the economic, social and environmental growth of the country. The winners stand out for their capacity to transform, innovate and promote sustainability, demonstrated in the context of significant challenges and continuous change. After practicing corporate law, Giovanna Vitelli joined the Board of Directors of the family Group Azimut|Benetti in 2000, progressively took the lead in product development, and became Chair in 2023. The Group – the world’s leading manufacturer of mega yachts for twenty-four consecutive years – closed the latest financial year with 1.3 billion euros of revenue, representing a 55% growth over the last four years. In continuity with the mission and values of the Group founded by her father, Giovanna Vitelli identifies the constant investment in innovation as the determining factor in maintaining leadership and generating value for people and the local community. Thus, the product development strategy – consistent with the positioning of both the Azimut and Benetti brands – includes the creation of new trends and onboard lifestyles, as well as technological advancement, trailblazing the way to reducing environmental impact. Since the beginning of her entrepreneurial journey, Giovanna Vitelli has explored new frontiers of nautical design, encouraging technical offices and designers to rethink onboard spaces and offer today’s owners a more contemporary lifestyle, focused on conviviality, elegance, and proximity to the sea. Recent examples of this are Benetti’s Oasis Deck® and Azimut’s Seadeck Series, both of which are top sellers in the market. In this process of evolution, the Group has established itself as Design Hub with many international collaborations, introducing architects and creatives to the sector and thus enriching it with new and innovative influences and solutions. In the field of environmental sustainability, the Group’s strategy combines pragmatism with an ambitious vision offering the best results achieved today in emissions reduction through the development and integration of the most effective solutions available: weight reduction, high-efficiency hulls, hybrid propulsion systems, and onboard power management. At the same time, in collaboration with independent organizations and universities, it promotes the establishment of certification standards for consumption and emissions, in order to guide the industry towards an increasingly conscious and mature approach. In support of the strategy, Chair Giovanna Vitelli has launched a drive to strengthen the managerial culture and governance by also establishing the Azimut|Benetti Group Corporate Academy, aimed at the professional education and growth of the people, with the goal of transferring the expertise that embodies Italian excellence in technology, engineering, and manufacturing within the company, while also supporting young people entering the world of yachting. “I believe that this award represents recognition for the results obtained by the entire Group as we accompany our clients into a new era of yachting and a new way of experiencing the sea,” declared Giovanna Vitelli, Chair of the Azimut|Benetti Group, adding, “As a family company, we have the privilege of looking ahead and creating value over time. Today, this means committing to reducing emissions to make the nautical world more sustainable, which inspires other players in the sector to do the same. But above all, it means continuing to combine the greatest beauty with the most sophisticated technology. My thanks to the 2,250 people who work for Azimut|Benetti Group around the world and who, together with me, continue to chart the course.”

Greenline Slashes Carbon

Greenline Yachts is taking another big step in the direction of responsible yachting by offering on the entire range alternative solutions to the old generator paradigm. The New Responsible Power Pack technology, a sound combination of bigger battery package and alternators, allows lower emissions without any compromise on the way the yachts are used. Among the other benefits al boats will now offer at least 48 hours of silent battery power at anchor or docks. Owners can run the entire house (including aircon full blast) and make the most of their home on the sea without the noise, vibration and smell of a generator. Not to mentions consumptions!  Instead of a generator, Greenline will fit a high-powered alternator that can take power from the engine when it runs to recharge a large lithium battery bank. In this way, the yacht can arrive at its destination with full batteries, ready for days of silent operation at anchor. When energy is used efficiently, the autonomy of the yacht can be extended for days by using solar power to cover hotel loads such as induction cooking and lighting.

Wally Unearths the Innovators of Tomorrow

Wally is reaching out to the next generation of innovators as part of the celebrations to mark its 30th anniversary. The famous Monegasque yachting brand has been offering students the chance to pitch their own ideas as part of an initiative called wallybeacon. Three winning projects have received a cash prize.  The wallybeacon event reached its climax on 18-19 November, when the winners were chosen at an event held on H-FARM Campus. But the process began earlier in the autumn with a call for proposals which attracted over 80 students grouped into 20+ teams from international universities: ARSUTORIA SCHOOL, Università Bocconi, H-FARM College, Istituto Europeo di Design, International University of Monaco and POLI.design.  The challenge set by Wally was to develop an idea that delivered in one of three broad domains: personal goods, innovative living or smart services and experiences. In order to focus students’ thinking, the first category was focused on to footwear, bags and luggage; the second to multifunctional furniture and functional design objects; and the third to digital products, services and “phygital” experiences (the blending of digital and physical).  Once they had formed a team and picked a topic, participants had to come up with their idea, which they submitted to an initial selection process. The 16 teams that were successful at this stage then received support and mentoring from Wally and MAIZE — Designing Futurabilities, a company specialized in strategic design, part of Jakala Group. Each team had two business training sessions to develop their commercial understanding, four mentoring sessions to support the product/service itself and a final session aimed at refining the pitch deck.  Winning required not just a great product but a fantastic presentation in front of a panel of experts. To that end, teams were urged to think hard about who they were targeting and how. As well as conducting a market survey to validate the idea, they were asked to draw up a business model and a start-up roadmap, all taking sustainability into account. Teams were also expected to produce a prototype or a design concept.  Wallybeacon is a project designed to identify the next generation of innovators and teach them how to develop and present an idea professionally. Wally, long recognized as a symbol of innovation and revolution in the yachting market, sees value in passing on the principles that have led to its success and acclaim. At the same time, Wally benefits by building connections with the leaders of tomorrow.

Project: Solaris Power 70 Grand Coupe

Solaris Power presents the 70 Grand Coupe project, as designed by Dragani.  The 70 Grand Coupe is based on the hull lines of the 70 Long Range project which Solaris Power presented the past Spring and is also designed by Dragoni, with the difference between the two yachts is that the 70 Coupe as the name entails has no flybridge.  Other differences is that the aft deck of the 70 Coupe has a sun-pad aft deck, offered in two from three of the layouts available.  The standard Version A and optional Version C are an aft sunpad version, while Version B comes with the opposing settees dinette as found in the 70 Long Range.  For the interior this theme continues as the standard Main Deck Layout A offers a different layout with galley to starboard, and optional Layout B and C having an astern galley to port as found on the flybridge version.  The lower deck in Solaris Power 70 Coupe is a standard four cabins three heads layout, with an optional Cabin Layout B replacing the fourth single berth cabin with a day head by the stairs.  The Solaris Power 70 Coupe is to be powered by twin Volvo 725hp and or optional 1000hp with IPS pod drives.

Unattended Yacht Collides Into Container Ship in Biscayne Bay Miami

A 26 meter super yacht titled m/y Waku collided with a CMA-CGM container ship as this was being towed and tug controlled in Biscayne Bay, Miami on 25 November.  Instagram Seafarer_Obscura posted the video on his channel to what looks a strange accident, for the fact that there seems to be no one on the yacht before and just after the collision.  Waku looks also to be powerless in the video clip, with its anchor fully up and current drifting as it collides bow first into the container ship starboard side, damaging its safety railing with the impact.  With the anchor fully up the first thought on what happened is that the yacht broke free from its mooring, but it is not understood as the video is cut after the collision.  If anyone has more information about this collision please send a message or leave a comment below.
M/y Waku is a Cheoy Lee 84 as designed by Tom Fexas and produced in three units in the mid noughties.  The Cheoy Lee 84 came out came as a replacement to the 81 and then evolved in the 88 model.
