During the 2017 Fort Lauderdale boat show Riva showed a preview for a 90 project. The 90 foot super yacht is the latest addition to the new-generation Riva flybridge range and complements the successful 100 Corsaro launched at the end of 2016, and the soon to launch 110 Dolce Vita, which is set to be launched in early 2018. The 90 is the result of the since 1991 Riva designers Officina Italiana Design of Mauro Micheli and Sergio Beretta, and the Ferretti Group Product Strategy Committee, and the Group’s Engineering Department who own the Riva brand since 2000. The new Riva 90 is a pocket size super yacht combining and reinforcing the unique selling points of its predecessors, with particular emphasis on the exterior styling distinguished by sleek and dynamic profile and the generous use of glass for the hull-mounted windows, from the stern to the wide-body owner's suite on the main deck and on the raised pilothouse. For the 90 designer Micheli and Berretta bring design intuitions as shown in the bigger 100 Corsaro and 110 Dolce Vita for a a semi wide body raised pilot house design, but importantly bring Riva to compete in the 28-29 meter sector of this class which has become very competitive thanks to a registered length under 24 meters and the option to have an owners stateroom on the forward part of the main deck. The stern area features the innovative Ferretti Group’s patented concealed stairway system, already installed on the new 56 Rivale. The garage can accommodate a Williams 395 tender and a personal watercraft, which can be launched independently. A choice of three engine configurations is available for the Riva 90, with the standard being twin MTU 1948hp which should should deliver cruising speeds of 22 knots and a maximum of 26 knots. Alternatively owners can choose twin MTU 2218hp which increase speeds by two knots, or MTU 2435hp which manage to add speeds by four knots and allow for a maximum of thirty knots. The Riva 90 will be equipped with underway and zero-speed stabilizing fins as standard, and upon request, can also include Seakeeper gyro stabilizers.

Propulsion: ZF Project Disruption
ZF's global Marine and Special Driveline Technology business unit introduced the Project Disruption concept to the public on the opening day of the 2017 Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. The new propulsion concept introduces contra-rotating technology to conventional inboard shaft line applications. The Project Disruption concept allows shaft line boat builders to harness the benefits of contra-rotating propellers, including increased efficiency, acceleration and reverse authority. The concept changes all of the pre-established constraints of trying to optimize propeller diameter with gear ratio. The concept, intended to interface with a standard ZF marine transmission, is comprised of a strut-housed underwater gearbox which transmits power to two contra-rotating propellers. In addition to providing increased efficiency and acceleration, Project Disruption's contra-rotating propellers will allow boat builders to consider a wider range of transmission ratios than what is possible today given propeller sizing constraints for single propeller shaft-lines. This will allow naval architects the opportunity to better optimize the propeller to gear ratio relationship depending on vessel application and loads. The contra-rotating propellers will also offer improved reversing performance and low speed maneuvering by eliminating the propeller torque that currently affects single shaftline applications. While initially sized for tow sports boats, the concept could be extended to larger propulsion packages, or hybrid systems for a multitude of vessel applications.
