Propulsion: Volvo FWD

A revolutionary new concept in marine propulsion, the first Volvo Penta Forward Drive (FWD), debuted at an exclusive event at the Miami International Boat Show. Opening up a new realm for recreational water sports, the Volvo Penta FWD begins with forward-facing dual counter-rotating props with an adjustable-trim drive. This patented and innovative design pulls the boat through the water rather than pushing, with an undisturbed water flow to the propellers. This clean and efficient propulsion system delivers superior responsiveness, acceleration, fuel economy and versatility, allowing for an array of activities behind the boat, including wakesurfing and wakeboarding. Drivers will also be able to customize the wake for different ability levels and feel the difference in tighter high-speed turns, as well as more responsive slow-speed maneuvering and docking. Additionally, the forward-facing DuoProp, with counter-rotating propellers, offers a unique and industry-first symmetrical wake-boarding wake and equally shaped wake-surfing wave on your side of choice. FWD also reduces noise and vibration, and virtually eliminates annoying fumes on deck since engine exhaust is expelled underwater beneath the boat. The adjustable tilt makes it easy to trim the boat for optimum fuel efficiency and comfort when cruising. When at rest with the drive trimmed down, the forward-facing propellers are inboard of the boat making activities like fishing and swimming more practical astern of the boat.  The Volvo Penta FWD, coupled with the new-generation marine gas engines, is an unbeatable combination for boat builders, providing higher speeds and better performance with a smaller, lighter engine. The engine and drive system are proven and feature accessible service points for easier maintenance.  Dealers and boat owners will also benefit from the commonality of parts across the full range of engines and drives. Most importantly, the builder, dealer and customer have the peace of mind that comes with a fully integrated helm-to-prop solution designed, built and supported by a single manufacturer with an unmatched reputation for customer satisfaction and after-the-sale customer service.  The new Volvo Penta FWD and gas engines are covered by Volvo Penta’s warranty with five years of factory protection. Engine: Volvo D6-400 400hp

Volvo Penta invented the high-performance diesel sterndrive in 1977 and has been the undisputed market leader in this constantly expanding segment ever since. The latest addition confirms this position: a 400 hp version of the D6 engine, matched with a refined DPH Duoprop drive which equals to be the current world’s most powerful diesel sterndrive.  Back in 1977, the high performance diesel sterndrive was launched in the form of Volvo Penta’s D40 with single prop drive. A mere 125 hp powered boats such as the Sunseeker 23 DC. The launch of Duoprop and the compressor concept quickly made Volvo Penta the first choice for diesel sport performance.  The D6-400 engine is based on the proven design of the IPS600 engine. Compared to the current D6-370, the 400-version has supercharging with a larger turbo and a tuned mechanical compressor. The charge air cooler has increased capacity to handle the increased flow, and the cooling system has a new heat exchanger and improved oil cooling. The combustion chamber features modified design, a new valve position and increased capacity injectors. The efficient combustion leads to low overall emissions.  Torque is also important in the new D6-400 and this is where the Volvo Penta compressor concept excels by producing charge air, and thereby a massive torque directly from low rpms. The D6-370 is today unmatched and the new D6-400 is 10 % better. Already at 2000 rpm it reaches its maximum torque of 970 Nm – enough to produce safe and fast acceleration onto the plane for great driving enjoyment.  Another Volvo Penta specialty is to develop engine, drive and propellers as a package, rather than separate components. This is essential to transform the torque and power to acceleration, top speed and driving pleasure. The DPH Duoprop drive was introduced in 2003 as the strongest and most efficient sterndrive ever. To handle the D6-400 while still maintaining a slim and efficient underwater body, Volvo Penta developed new technology.  The upper unit comes with a new bearing box with a new roller bearing, a reinforced suspension fork and redesigned gear geometry. The lower unit features gear with geometry developed by Volvo Penta and made from unique super-high tensile steel with efficient lubrication. Lubrication has also been redesigned to ensure that the drive can handle the tremendous forces with high reliability.

Engine: Volvo D13-700MC 700hp

Volvo Penta is introducing the D13, a new inboard marine diesel for marine commercial applications. The D13 in 700hp versions delivers impressive performance with low fuel consumption and minimal exhaust emissions. It is suitable for fast patrol boats in high speed operations as well as for performance work boats requiring low life-cycle costs. Massive low-end torque is also the feature of Volvo Penta’s inboard diesels from low rpm, a prerequisite for rapid and safe acceleration. The new D13 is equipped with Volvo Penta’s highly efficient twin-entry turbo with pulse charging, the power in each exhaust pulse provides the pulse pressure. Another important feature is that the D13 retains a very high torque throughout its speed range. This makes it possible to maintain good operating speed even with a heavily loaded boat or in rough seas. EMS 2, the engine control system developed by Volvo, regulates fuel injection and monitors engine conditions. The system controls the unit injectors, one per cylinder, which operate at a pressure of as much as 2000 bar and atomize the fuel for optimum combustion. The result of this efficient combustion is lower fuel consumption for the D13 than the previous model, at the same power output. The D13 is also very low on noxious emissions and particulates. All versions are certified to the IMO NOx Tier 2, EU IWW, and US EPA Tier 2 requirements. They also meet the upcoming US EPA Tier 3 emission regulations the world’s most stringent. The D13 is available with quick-shift reverse gear that provides very fast but soft shifting with a minimum delay. The reverse gear also comes with a low speed function as standard, which means that the speed when idling drops by 50%. Low-speed mode is available as an option for all reverse gears. The D13-700 have the same robust basic architecture as the Volvo D9, D11, and D16 inline-6 diesel engine platform. The platform features a robust block design, wet liners, rear-end transmission, ladder frame and a single cylinder head with overhead camshaft operating 4 valves per cylinder and the injectors. This contributes to smooth running, high reliability and long-term durability. www.volvopenta.com

Propulsion - Volvo IPS1050, IPS1200

In 2005, Volvo Penta’s pioneering IPS system created a completely new marine segment, so-called pod installations. With forward-facing and efficient propellers, the IPS system is the undisputed market leader in pod installations, and has created an alternative to traditional shaft installations. The first stage of the IPS system was based on Volvo Penta’s 4 and 6-litre diesel engines. Last year, two new power classes were launched with larger drive units based on Volvo’s 11-liter engines. This year, Volvo Penta is launching a third stage based on the Volvo Group’s 13-litre engines. The two new IPS drive packages generate the equivalent of 1,050 and 1,200 horsepower, respectively, compared with conventional inboard installations. This means that Volvo Penta can now offer the IPS system for boats all the way up to 100+ feet. The engine for the new power classes is Volvo Penta’s 13-liter engine equipped with dual-stage turbo technology, the D13, developing 800 and 900 horsepower, respectively. This 13-liter engine has been developed and designed with the help of ultramodern diesel engine technology.

Engine: Volvo Penta D3 220hp

The new Volvo Penta D3 super diesel sterndrive is here compact and filled with ultramodern engine technology. The new D3, in four power classes from 140 to 220 horsepower, is faster, more powerful, cleaner and quieter than its predecessor. And now it is also available with a joystick. The new D3 is a completely new engine. Like its predecessor, the basic engine comes from the Volvo Car Corporation and is based on a 2.4 liter, five cylinder aluminum engine block with the very latest in engine technology. The new D3 has a common rail fuel injection system with a pressure of 1,800 bar and piezoelectric injectors, which make possible multiple injections per working cycle and thus even more precise fuel quantities. Advanced and highly efficient cross-flow cooling maintains an even engine temperature. A variable geometry turbocharger gives the engine effective supercharging from even very low rpm up to maximum rpm. This results in a powerful torque for rapid acceleration up to planing speed and a higher top speed. Everything is monitored and controlled electronically, now with even greater precision. All in all, this gives the new D3 impressive sports performance compared with its predecessor, which was already the best in its class. Output has been increased from 190 to 220 hp at the same time as fuel consumption is lower, as is sound and emissions. The new D3's emissions are in line with the very stringent US EPA Tier 3 regulations, which come into force in 2012.

Engine: Volvo Penta D13 900hp

For almost a decade, the Volvo Penta D12 has been a leading engine for motor yachts in the 50-foot class. Volvo Penta is now introducing its new, more powerful, more fuel-efficient and cleaner successor: the new D13. With its 900 horsepower, it is Volvo Penta’s most powerful engine so far for leisure boats. A characteristic of Volvo Penta’s inboard diesels is their high torque from low rpm, a crucial property for rapid and safe acceleration with the D13-900 equipped with a new dual-stage turbo technology. The first stage is a twin entry turbo with pulse charging – the power in each exhaust pulse is used to provide pulse pressure – which results in a very high torque from low rpm. At higher rpm, a second turbo kicks in so that the engine retains its power even at high rpm. The D13-900 reaches its maximum torque of 3300 Nm at only 1300rpm, a uniquely high torque for this class of engine. The engine also retains a very high torque throughout its speed range, an important factor when the boat is heavily loaded. Highly efficient combustion is a prerequisite of low fuel consumption and low emissions. EMS 2, the engine control system developed by Volvo Penta, regulates fuel injection 100 times per second, twice as often as the previous version. The system controls the unit injectors, one per cylinder, which operate at a pressure of as much as 2000 bar and atomize the fuel for optimum combustion. The result of this efficient combustion is lower fuel consumption, 10 percent lower for the D13 than the D12 at the same power output. Exhaust emissions are also lower than ever before. Acceleration smoke levels at all rpm are well below the visible level. Total emissions satisfy by a wide margin the EU RCD and US EPA Tier 2 regulations and are also in line with the very stringent EPA Tier 3 regulations that will come into force in 2012. The D13 is available with “Quick Shift” reverse gears, an advanced technology that provides very fast but soft shifting with a minimum delay. The reverse gear also comes with a low-speed function as standard, which means that the speed when idling drops from about six knots to three knots. A very important aid when maneuvering or fishing. The new D13 is equipped with EVC, Volvo Penta’s electronic platform, which includes electronic shift and throttle all the way from the controls to the engine and drive. EVC also makes it simple to install additional accessories and functions such as a trip computer, engine data in the chart plotter via NMEA or the new 7” color display. With EVC, it is possible to have instrumentation, or complete helm stations, in up to four locations on board.

This exciting new drive offers technological innovations for increased performance, environmental care, safety and easy maintenance. OceanX is designed for select Volvo Penta gasoline and diesel engines. The OceanX uses state-of-the art electro-deposit to apply a titanium-ceramic coating that greatly improves the corrosion resistance of the aluminum castings making it perfect for the salt water environment. This highly durable and flexible coating covers the entire drive for maximum protection. It is chromate free and environmentally friendly. This new process allows Volvo Penta to continue to its commitment of care for the environment. The OceanX drive also includes two new features never before incorporated on a sterndrive package. A new sterndrive oil sensor warns the boater when drive oil is low or contaminated with water and another sensor mounts in the universal joint bellows between the OceanX drive and the boat transom. This sensor sounds a warning if water has entered that critical area and may lead to failure. Engines for the new OceanX drive are 5.0 GXi, 5.7 Gi-300, 5.7 Gxi, 8.1 GI, 8.1 GXi for Petrol Gasoline, and D3-130, D3-160, and D3-190 for the diesels.

Propulsion: Volvo Penta IPS800 - IPS900

With newer, larger drive units, the Volvo Penta IPS system is expanding with two more power classes: IPS900 and IPS800. The new packages will be installable on boats up to 100 feet and thereby offer never before seen features for the environment, maneuvering, comfort and performance on this type of boat. Volvo Penta IPS is the leading system in the boating industry for pod installations. Since its launch in 2005, Volvo Penta has, with the help of the IPS system, successfully taken an increasingly greater share or the inboard market. And as a result of the systems immense flexibility with multiple installations, IPS is currently offered on an increasing variety of boat types, all the way up to 100 feet. To date, the engines on the IPS system have been Volvo Penta 4 and 6 liter diesel engines with a maximum of 435 hp. Two entirely new power classes are launched with larger drive units and larger engines. More powerful drive units, larger engines with greater power and more than twice as much torque place enormous demands on drive units. Therefore, Volvo Penta has developed a larger and considerably more powerful IPS drive unit and a new propeller series for the IPS800 and IPS900. The larger drive unit provides all the advantages and characteristics that made the original IPS system so successful. An underwater body and propellers were developed with the help of highly advanced computer models along with extensive trials in the cavitation tunnel and tests on the boat. The result is an integrated, highly efficient propulsion system. Boat owners will have significantly lower fuel consumption and exhaust emissions and the industry’s best features for performance, comfort and maneuverability with the renowned joystick function. As with earlier drive units, the propeller series is systematic, which means that the boat manufacturer chooses the propeller according to the IPS model and top speed of the boat. The engine for the new power classes is Volvo Penta’s 11-liter engine, D11, with 700hp or 600hp. The engine is equipped with a twin-entry turbo that enables pulse charging, a technique that coupled with a mechanical compressor provides powerful torque from low RPMs. Combined with the larger IPS drive and twin forward-facing counter-rotating propellers provide highly rapid acceleration and immediate response to the driver’s commands. Increased efficiency leads to superior performance in the IPS900 and IPS800, combined with lower fuel consumption and in particular lower total emissions.
