New Model: Solaris Power 60 Open

Solaris Power continue to upgrade it's walk-around range debuting its largest model to date with the just launched 60 Open.  The Solaris Power 60 Open is again a design of Brunello Acampora, the naval architect who has designed all the Solaris Power models to date in both hull architecture and exterior lines.  In the 60 Open we also have interiors by Roseo, who presented three different lower deck layouts offering three or two cabins.  The standard three double cabins layout called C cabin version offers a forward master stateroom with two guest cabins at midships and an L-shaped relaxing sofa.  The other two options for the 60 Open move the master stateroom to midships, with version A offering a VIP suite forward, and an en-suited third cabin with two inline berths located to port side.  In version B the third cabin is replaced by an L-shaped relaxing sofa.  A single berth crew cabin is available as an option located in between the engine room and cabin area.  Exterior wise the Solaris Power 60 Open uses all the available space with the fulcrum area being at the middle in behind the pilot station, with two wet-bars and L-shaped dinettes making for a very large lounging dinning area which can be further expanded by the side drop down bulk-heads, and also served by two sun-pads to fore and aft.  The 60 Open is powered by standard twin Volvo 600hp Volvo engines with IPS pods propulsion which give a top speed up to thirty knots, with optional of 725hp and or 1000hp taking speeds up to 39 knots.

Project: Absolute Navetta 53

Absolute present the project for an upcoming Navetta 53 model.  The Navetta 53 is to be a replacement for the long eight years produced Navetta 52 which debuted in 2016 and was the second Navetta range model of more livable type of yachts as offered by Absolute.  As the saying says though, you do not change a winning product, you evolve it into the future, and so this new Navetta 53 is based on many technicalities on the 52, all hull dimensions and layout is mostly the same, as is the twin Volvo 480hp power units coupled to twin IPS pod drives.  So what is changed?  The most important changes in the Navetta 53 come in two areas the stern and the glazing serving the main deck.  The stern of the Navetta 53, just like the bigger Navetta 75 and 70 sisters will feature the glass aft parapet for uninterrupted view which coupled with the modular furnishing give a new meaning to the aft deck.  The second is the glazing for the living main deck, now featuring floor to ceiling windows which with the lowered bulwark offer uninterrupted views from outside to inside.

Another Lurssen Facility Fire

A massive fire broke out at the Lurssen Rensburg facility in Schacht-Audorf on the Kiel Canal, Germany starting at 09:00 morning of Tuesday second July.  Over one hundred personnel where evacuated from the facility when the fire started, with one being hospitalized for smoke inhalation and 24 treated on site.  A nearby resident area with about thirty people was also ordered to evacuate.  300 firefighters, two evacuation helicopters, and multiple ambulances were dispatched to the area, with fireboats also involved in the fire fighting for what took about twenty hours to fully extinguish. Firefighters reported that they could not enter the hall due to severe temperatures of over 500 degrees Celsius in it, so they had to fight the fire from the outside, with the hall ultimately having its roof and part of its external walls collapse.
This is Lurssen third yard fire since 2018, with the most recent one coming in June of last year at the Lemwerder premises, while in December of 2023 the German shipyard also suffered a yacht falling which then damaged a shed door and injured one person in Bremen.
The unconfirmed damaged super yacht seems to be Lurssen Project Honolulu a 74 meter which was due for delivery in a couple of weeks.  Founded in 1875 Lurssen is a specialist in the larger sized super yachts above one hundred meters, currently reported to have seven vessels under construction, including of which is 142 meter Project Ali Baba.

Sport Cruiser Catches Fire in Cancun

An unattended nine meter sport cruiser went ablaze in Cancun Hotel Zone water near Calinda Bridge on 14:00 hours of Monday first July.   Rescue teams, including firefighters and marine personnel, responded along with several passing boats to the fire, with Tourist Police and National Guard also arriving at the scene.  An investigation on the cause of the fire is underway by the Civil Protection, with an electrical issue being pointed as the most possible cause of the fire.
The boat in this fire is a Chaparral 300 Signature as produced from 1998 to 2003.  The 300 Signature came out as a replacement to the 30/31 Signature and was replaced by the 310 Signature.

New Model: Sunseeker Predator 55

Sunseeker has just launched the Predator 55, a replacement to the Predator 55 Evo and new entry level to the sport yacht hard-top range.  The Predator's have featured in the Poole boat builders range since 1993, when the first 63 debuted in Sunseeker's range since then. This new Predator 55 stands out due to its distinctive curved silhouette and sloping hardtop design, distinguishing it from similar sized and styled yachts. Powered by Volvo 725hp with IPS pod drives, this Predator 55 can achieve speeds of up to 36 knots. Notable features include retractable glazing and a carbon fiber sunroof that exposes the sky above. The yacht boasts an integrated tender garage for a jet rib up to 3.2 meters, a hydraulic bathing platform, and an aft sun-pad. With newly styled exterior seating, the Predator 55 offers an expansive aft cockpit. The aft retractable doors seamlessly connect the galley side units with the cockpit wet bar, creating a harmonious indoor-outdoor layout. There is an upholstered sofa, L-shaped seating, and a formal dining area with an expandable table for enhanced comfort. The foredeck features comfortable seating, a sun-pad with integrated storage, and a carbon fiber sail canopy for sun protection. A gyro option reduces rolling at anchor, ensuring maximum comfort. The customizable interior layout allows for flexibility, such as relocating the main deck galley to the lower deck to accommodate additional seating and a rise-and-fall TV. The lower deck space can also be transformed into a twin cabin with an en suite, accommodating up to six guests. The Predator 55 introduces a brand-new interior fabric and finishes collection, developed in collaboration with Design Unlimited, offering a versatile color scheme and materials palette tailored to each owner's preferences.  The Predator 55 is second of three models based on the Superhawk 55 hull which debuted in 2023, although completely re-engineered in the use of spaces, and is to be followed by the similar spec'd but sport bridge up top Sport Yacht 55, which probably will arrive in early 2025.

Strong Winds in Traverse City Partly Sinks Formula Powerboat

Sudden strong winds in Traverse City, Michigan on the afternoon of Sunday thirtieth June partly sank a Formula power boat of eleven meters in length, while a Sea Ray sport cruiser of eight meters also ended beached.  According to locals the North wind came in following a sudden strong storm in the late morning afternoon of Sunday, with the Formula finishing beached and then swamped by the big waves into its stern which build up during the sudden storm.  The Sea Ray sport cruiser is reported to have broken its swing mooring when at Clinch Bay.
The Formula in this part sinking looks is a F-419 SR-1 as produced in the nineties, while the Sea Ray looks to be the top selling Sea Ray 268 Sundancer as produced in the eighties.

British Renaissance

If you mention British pleasure boat and yacht builders the trio of Sunseeker, Princess, and Fairline would come to most people's mind.  But recently two other semi-production boat builders seem to be making in-roads, and these are Cockwells and its Duchy and Hardy brands, and Dale.  Interestingly both these offer something different from what the usual British triplet brings, conservative in looks, with innovation coming more on the technical side.
Founded in 1995 Cockwells should be getting a lot of attention for both its Duchy and Hardy names.  Duchy offers an interesting line of traditional down East inspired models from six to eighteen meters, with both the larger 45 and 60 models being projects.  Of interesting note was the ten meter Duchy Sport an interesting mix of modern sport cruiser and traditional lines which debuted in 2023.  Hardy was purchased by Cockwells in 2020, and in 2023 we are seeing the fruits of this acquisition as the new ownership debuted its first 50DS model.
Dale on the other hand has been a slow grower, founded in 1961, the company made a good step in the nineties as it started a collaboration with TT Boat Designs, the firm which designs the famous Nelson type hull as used in a lot of small and medium sized pilot and patrol boats. The fruits of this collaboration started with the Dale Classic 45 in 2004, and since then Dale has been pushing forward, and in the last years its latest down East inspired products are innovative.  Look at the recently launched Classic 35 and Classic 37 as example.
Are these three brands made to replace the usual British trio.  Definitely not, but they do offer something very British in looks and use, which the boats from the trio today and in the recent decades do not, and most importantly are firms managed by the passionate people who founded them.

Sport Cruiser Saved by Guardia di Finanza Near Palmaria

A thirteen meter Atlantis sport cruiser titled m/y Hola with seven persons onboard, three of which small children was saved from ending on the rocks in Palmaria Island near La Spezia, on the afternoon of Sunday thirtieth June.  The near accident to the sport cruiser happened as it ended powerless during its navigation and close to finishing on the rocks aground near Palmaria island, when it called a Mayday on channel sixteen, with the Guardia di Finanza of La Spezia section responding immediately to the call with V.2070 patrol boat.  At first the Guardia di Finanza secured the boat to safety, then they calmed its passengers, and later towed the sport cruiser to its home berth six nautical miles to the East in Bocca di Magra.
The sport cruiser in this saving is an Atlantis Gobbi 425 SC as produced from 2001 to 2009.  The 425 SC was designed in house by the Gobbi design team before the company was sold to the Azimut-Benetti Group in the fall of 2001.  The 425 SC was added with HT hard-top option in 2008, with the model replaced by the Salvetti and Biaggi designed Atlantis 44.

Absolute Yachts New Majority Stake

Wise Equity has announced it will acquire a majority stake in Absolute, the northern Italy-based shipbuilder. The investment, which will be made via its Wisequity VI fund, will assist with the Italian manufacturer’s plans for growth and development.  With the agreement, Wisequity V1 will acquire a major stake in the luxury-yacht maker.  Absolute, founded in 2002 by Sergio Maggi and Marcello Bè, is a leading manufacturer of navetta, flybridge and coupé yachts from 47 to 75ft. All yachts are currently made in-house at its production plant in Piacenza.  The manufacturer has seen increasing growth and expects to close out this financial year in August with more than €110 million in revenue. It says of that sum, about 90 per cent was made abroad. The manufacturer, which has a sales subsidiary in the United States, operates in more than 30 countries.  The transaction involves the acquisition of a majority stake by Wisequity VI and its co-investors, the significant reinvestment of the majority of the existing shareholders and the presence of Angelo Gobbi as Absolute’s Honorary Chairman, to ensure the manufacturer’s strategic and managerial continuity.  Gobbi was jovial about the investment. “Absolute’s motto is: ‘he who hesitates, is lost!’” he said following the announcement. “That is why for some time now we have been reflecting on the future of Absolute. We must continue to evolve, as we have always done.”  Wise Equity, he said, was an ideal partner to strengthen and support the manufacturer through its next phase of growth.  Wise Equity SGR manages closed-end investment funds that invest in small and medium-sized companies, with a special focus on Italy. It currently has three funds under management. Wisequity VI was launched in May 2023 with a total commitment of €400 million. The Absolute deal is its fourth investment.

Azimut Wins Robb Report Best of the Best 2024

Another award for Azimut's Verve 48 comes from the jury of the Robb Report Best of the Best 2024, which chose this model as the winner of the "Dayboat" category. This important recognition, awarded every year by the American magazine Robb Report, underlines the success achieved by the Verve Series, benchmark in her category and number one in US market share today with over 120 units sold in four years. Azimut's Verve 48 was awarded for "the triple 600-hp Mercury outboards, open exterior, and foldout rear deck” that make it the best dayboat, according to the jury composed of journalists from Robb Report US. The project by Francesco Struglia, designer of the exteriors and interiors of Verve 48, envisages an innovative concept of the sport-weekender, which on the one hand allows the owner to glide over the water while, on the other, to enjoy stays at anchor in full harmony with the sea.

Benetti Second Legal Symposium

The second Legal Symposium, a two-day event for lawyers from some of the top international law firms active in the boatbuilding industry, looked at recent legal topics in the areas of contracts and international compliance together with the Shipyard's in-house legal team and management.  Benetti has always organised events and other initiatives to foster the growth of the yachting market from all points of view, and international contracts are a key factor in the Shipyard’s relationships with customers. This is why Benetti launched its Legal Symposium last year. The second edition of this event was held on June 3 and 4 at Hotel Plaza De Russie in Viareggio, Showroom Franchi Umberto Marmi, Cava Bettogli and Benetti’s Viareggio shipyard. It was attended by over 50 lawyers from the main law firms active in the Italian and international boatbuilding industry.  The heart of the event was a legal discussion in which the guest lawyers and Benetti’s in-house legal team and area sales managers spent an entire afternoon debating the most pressing issues in the yachting world today, such as certain clauses in yacht construction contracts, the implementation of compliance procedures (including Anti Money Laundering - AML) in response to increasingly stringent international laws, and the sustainability of yacht building.  “We’re proud of the success of the second Benetti Legal Symposium,” commented Georgia Agù, Group General Counsel Azimut|Benetti. “This initiative is an opportunity to foster collaboration and sharing of knowledge between international law experts in our industry. We’re convinced that meetings like this are essential to tackle future challenges in an increasingly dynamic and ever-changing legal context.”

Marlow Yachts Owners Rendezvous 2024

Isn’t it fun to gather with a group of boaters and celebrate how the boating lifestyle is so enjoyable? Not only the excitement of it all, but the stories that come from cruising, from the trials and tribulations of making sure things are in order…and work…to sharing design ideas, recipes, and destination experiences. For a prospective buyer, the information from current Marlow owners is priceless. It can make or break the decision and from what I saw at the 26th Annual Marlow Marine Cruising Club’s (MMCC) Spring Rendezvous at the Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo, Florida, on the 9 to 12 May.   Speaking with a couple who made that commitment two months ago, it was the research, the boat shows, the online videos, and talking with other owners that helped make their decision. They looked at other boats, even toured other shipyards, but in the end, “Some of the things, to me, with the Marlow is the speed, that was a big factor, to have that speed capability,” he says. “And then the draft; the draft was a big factor, too, because it was much shallower than those slower trawler types. And then just the look of it, it just really looks nice and clean…classic.”  One of the biggest benefits I heard from owners was the ample room, not only in the accommodations below (I was impressed with the more than generous headroom), but also in the engine room. You can access both sides of the engines without squatting or ducking or squeezing between equipment.  But the real purpose of this annual event was to reconnect with old friends and welcome new ones as they participate in a bevy of activities.  After a welcome dinner party on opening night Thursday, Friday included morning discussions with Ring Power and Caterpillar engines, Blue Water Desalination, MPI and an update on Internet access while on board, and Dockmate’s latest positioning system.  The afternoon had teams golf carting their way on a scavenger hunt or crews who wanted to try their hand at a cooking class that featured crab cakes, Ocean Reef Club Yellowtail Snapper with Sherry Caper Butter, and the Club’s signature Key Lime Pie—recipes included.  Saturday continued with sponsor seminars from CMC Marine and the Yacht Group to a Marlow Yachts Q&A from the powers that be. The annual rendezvous isn’t complete without christening the latest builds to avoid the wrath of Neptune.  Each night concluded with a very active dinner party, especially Friday night’s “I Grew Up in the 19__’s” costume gala. From the ’50s through the ’80s, the classic styles were on full display. This year’s best costume winner went to the Swinsons with bell bottoms, heels, big hair (and that was his outfit) and her colorful paisley dress with boots made for walking.  It was a fantastic weekend, and by the closing awards dinner, everyone felt part of the family. That’s what is so special about Marlow. From the floor in the yard to the person making sure your yacht is everything you expected, it’s the caring, compassion, and love for the boat that makes choosing a Marlow an easy decision.

Riva and Officina Italiana Together For Five More Years

The happy synergy in place since 1994 has brought Riva into the future, ensuring that it’s the most admired shipyard in modern times too, thanks to the formidable mixture of innovative design and unparalleled style featured on every new model. By the end of 2024, the shipyard will have delivered eight new 62s, with an additional eight on order for completion in 2025. The first two Silent 80s are also due to be delivered next year, amounting to 18 yachts in just two years. Despite the brisk output, it is possible that two or three new build slots will become available in 2025 as Silent Yachts streamlines production. “This is a really exciting time for Silent Yachts,” says Silent Yachts CEO Fabrizio Iarrera. “We know from the volume of orders and the interest shown at boat shows that the Silent 62 has captured the imagination of sustainability-minded boaters. We’re just as proud of the three striking options for this yacht: a retractable flybridge, an open three-decker, and a hugely spacious true three-decker. We have had orders for all three variants.”
