Benetti Open Doors

To mark the national holiday celebrating the “Festa della Repubblica” (Republic Day), the Benetti shipyards at Livorno and Lusben (a division of the Azimut-Benetti group specialising in refit & repair work) are paying homage to the city, the Italian Republic and the Italian people by opening the doors of their production sites to all enthusiasts, curious passers-by and visitors who, for the very first time, will be able to visit the production area – measuring over 160 thousand square metres – owned by Benetti, which has been an ambassador of Italian nautical excellence and style for over 130 years. From the early hours of the morning on Thursday 2nd June, it will actually be possible to enter the historical shipyard and visit the production area by completing each leg of the carefully organised guided tour. The day’s schedule of events will begin at 09.00 with the official “door opening” and ribbon cutting ceremony, attended by various authorities and the local press. Welcome addresses will be given by Dr. Paolo Vitelli, Engineer Vincenzo Poerio, Dr. Paolo Casani and Dr. Gianni Cucco. In recognition of the strong and meaningful ties between Benetti and the city of Livorno, the sea and navigation, the ribbon will be cut by the truly exceptional Silvia Testa, a descendent of the Orlando family which used to own the homonymous shipyard (now the production area in which the modern Benetti shipyards are situated) and Daniela Benetti, a direct descendent of the Benetti family. The opening ceremony will also include the reading of a message from one of Livorno’s most illustrious citizens: President Ciampi, who, during his time in office as President of the Republic, was one of the leading supporters for the reconversion of the area into a first-class nautical centre. After the authorities and the shipyard have given their welcome addresses, visitors will be permitted to begin the six-leg tour inside the area. The tour begins with a fascinating route amongst the Benetti-produced yachts kept inside the Benetti Gallery – the most complete collection of Benetti and Orlando scale models – dating from the mid-nineteenth century up to today.  It then continues with a visit to the Morosini wharf, a historic dock area constructed in 1911, and then leads into the large assembly and furnishing sheds where the skills acquired in modern yacht construction are now applied: welding, sanding, priming, puttying, installing systems, furnishing and painting. Next, it is on to the service areas and the new Morosini wharf, where the equipment and systems for launching and hauling yachts are fitted. The image of a tri-colour wake in the open sea, chosen as the symbol of this event, will lead visitors, enthusiasts and curious passers-by into the heart of Benetti and Lusben. This is truly a unique event, something which has never been done before and which was particularly important to Azimut-Benetti in its quest to emphasise the mutual benefits of the link between Benetti and the city.

ISA Refit Division was quite busy in the last months. Several works were already completed or are due to be delivered in the coming weeks. Jarrett Bay 2011 Tournament Season in Full Swing

Last week, 15 Jarrett Bay-built boats fished the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament and quite a few of those went straight to the Hatteras Marlin Club Invitational. Day 1 of HMC saw stormy conditions and much of the fleet opted to take a lay day. The 70' Jarrett Bay, Ravaganza is currently on the board there with two white marlin releases after day 3. There are also Jarrett Bay boats participating in the Emerald Coast Blue Marlin Classic and Carolina Billfish Classic, both of which are starting right now and fishing into the weekend.

Jarrett Bay Mezzanine Refit

The 55' Jarrett Bay Builders Choice was in the yard last month for a complete mezzanine retrofit and other upgrades prior to tournament season. Mezzanine cockpit refits are becoming a popular project on sportfish boats that were built with a conventional standing room only cockpit layout. The basic process is to remove or cut-down old cabinetry and ice boxes for the addition of a mezzanine level and seating. This upgrade often provides just as much (or more) space for coolers or freezers below the sofas and steps, and in this case, even allowed for a larger engine room entrance. All without requiring any changes to the salon door placement. During this refit, the service department performed a number of other improvements.

The new 100 Cruiser epitomizes the three hallmarks of every Vicem yacht: exuding classic timeless looks, exemplifying the Vicem ideals for unmatched craftsmanship with a commitment to total customization, and the cold molded method of construction. But this timeless classic design Vicem has undergone a sophisticated makeover with a number of new refinements, thanks to Vicem’s in-house design team.  A mighty and powerful looking yacht which shows a lot of unrivaled prestige coming from the smaller 78 Cruiser sister.  Vicem's strengths are again utilized in this boat: from the use if wood and stainless steel in construction to the engineering resources necessary for the development of its Vee type hard chine semi-displacement hull.  Last but not least this super yacht maintains the Yard's DNA in custom or semi-custom production with a quality to price ratio that can be found only in Turkey, which can include full RINA class certification; Y pleasure class, and Malta commercial code. The standard version comes with five cabins for ten guests, an “over sized” U-shape Gaggenau kitchen, king size bed in the full-beam master stateroom and in the VIP suite. Two further guest cabins propose a queen-size and a twin beds double solution. The crew area is another sign of distinctiveness: three cabins with private toilets, double access and laundry and private area.  The Vicem 100 Cruiser contemporary twists are complemented by an updated exterior, and shows all its cruising character: a very high bow with a large and low cockpit to face rough seas for a pleasant and comfortable cruise in any weather. All on-board detail has been handcrafted to the highest standard and expertise: mahogany toe-rail and chromed brass or stainless steel hardware are just an example. Power arrangements are twin CAT engines 1550HP which allow the 100 Cruiser to reach cruising and maximum speeds of 17 and 21 knots, respectively.

New Model: Riviera 61 Enclosed Flybridge Series II

Riviera launched the new 61 Enclosed Flybridge Series II model a couple of weeks before the recent May Sanctuary Cove boat show, where the sportfish yacht made it's world debut.  The 61 Enclosed Flybridge Series II is a further development for the 2007 launched Series I model designed by Frank Mulder and regarded by many as the best sea handling Riviera.  The new Series II model is easily recognizable outside with new large windows supplying the mid ship cabin being located on the hull sides.  But a full raft of enhancements and engineering changes redefine the 61 Enclosed Flybridge Series II versus its predecessor.  The most recognizable change inside is the reposition of the galley now located astern by the patio door entrance of the saloon, which with Riviera trademark saloon tilting window joins this with the aft deck.  Another interesting feature for this size is the interior staircase for the enclosed flybridge.  Interior choices are for a three or four cabins plan layout.  The owners stateroom is located to mid ship in the four cabins plan, or to fore in the three rooms layout.  Both the third or fourth cabins are bunk berths in both plan choices.  Three heads are featured in both layout choices, two of which are ensuite to the midship and forward cabin.  Power choices are standard 1015hp Cats which give a max speed of 28 knots, with optional 1200hp MTU reaching up to 31 knots.

Project: Broom 370

Its nice to see Broom who was nearly closed in the fall of 2010 not only back in business, but challenging the market with a new and fresh project, the 370 set to launch at the fall of this year.  This latest Broom project continues the heritage of this over a century old British builder of an offshore capable cruiser, with inland waterways capability and design dedication.  From a low height and possible of lowering the radar arch, to the aft cabin design typical of the pure British motor cruiser. The 370 will sleep up to six guests in two cabins plus a convertible saloon.  As any aft cabin cruiser which do have an interior which actually spans the whole length of the boat, the two sleeping rooms of the 370; owners suite located to aft, and double Vee berth to fore will speak volumes in there sizes to vessels which are normally to a minimum five feet larger.  Andrew Wolstenholme responsible for the hull underwater shape of the 370 presented a medium Vee shape with a shallow skeg keel, and power choices of a single or twin engines.  For the speed lovers or more offshore orientated users the 370 can be powered with twin Volvo 330hp with in line shafts propulsion which should give a max speed of up to 30 knots. Other choices will include a Nanni hybrid which gives four hours of electrical only usage, and a single economic to run and maintain 370hp Volvo delivering a max of 20 knots of speed.

Projects: Benetti Sail Division 131 RS, Benetti Sail Division 115 RS, Benetti Sail Division 105 RS, Benetti Sail Division 98 RS, Benetti Sail Divison 82 RS

Benetti Sail Division presents the new Rounded Stern range.  This range represents a historical touch to Benetti Sail Division being this type of hull form among of its most successful designs.  The Rounded Stern line will offer a total of six models; starting from 82 up to 131 feet.  Pictured above is the 131 RS which will be a three deck super yacht.  Internal accommodation will offer a double five cabins plan with owner stateroom on the main deck and a two VIP suite located to aft, and mid ship.  Crew accommodation is for up to nine persons.  Power will be from twin 1319hp Cat engines which give a max speed of 14 knots.
The Benetti Sail Division 115 RS is the second in size model of the Rounded Stern range.  Measuring over 35 meters this will also be a three deck plus flybridge super yacht.  Her hull shape is a full displacement.  Accommodation is for up to 12 guests in five double cabins with owners stateroom located on the main deck.  As in all the rounded stern the 115 will feature a lot of innovation in the form of side balconies which open up to make time at sea enjoyable to the most.  Power is from twin 1000hp MAN engines which give a 13 knots max speed.
The 105 RS is the middle in size model of the classic looking Rounded Stern range from Benetti Sail Divison.  Unlike the bigger 131 and 115 models, the 105 RS will have  more sporty lines thanks to its more low profile two and half deck.  Accommodation is similar to the bigger models sleeping up to twelve guests in five cabins, and an owners stateroom located on the main deck.  Power is from MAN 1000hp engines which give a 13 knots of max speed and 12 of cruise.
The 98 RS is the second smallest model of Benetti Sail Division Rounded Stern range.  The line of the 98RS is very similar to the seven feet bigger 105 model having also a two and half deck layout.  Inside the 98 RS will sleep up to ten guests in four double cabins.  Owners suite is still located to the main deck, but the galley is to be located below taking space for an extra cabin.  Power is from twin 725hp Cat engines which give a top speed of 13 knots.
The entry level model of Benetti Sail Division Rounded Stern range is the 82 RS.  This model is also the second in size of all the Benetti Sail Division range and is only two feet bigger to the 80 World Traveller.  As is expected the 82 RS is a pocket sized super yacht, and continues two and half deck looks. Accommodation will sleep up to ten guests with owners stateroom still located on the main deck.  Crew beds is for up to four persons located to bow and featuring a lobby with a saloon and galley.  Power is from twin 450hp MAN engines which give an 11 knots max and cruise speed.  An economic 10 knots can also give a range of up to 2600 nautical miles before needing a refuel.

Project: Jet Tern 70 Artemis

Jet Tern continue to pursue its planning line expansion with the presentation of the 70 Artemis project.  The new 70 is again a design of architect Guide De Groot. There is still no details for this project on Jet Tern web site, although there is a mention of up coming 55 and 68 models.  The 70 Artemis should be the 68, and joins the now renamed 48 and recently launched 46 model.  Again modern European looks are part of the Artemis line and the 70 Artemis is no exception, but Jet Tern say that construction is to be of the same high standard as Selene ocean going trawlers.  Layout has not been advised yet but I accept a four cabin plus crew lower deck, and a split area saloon.  Interesting is the very sleek hard top and upper structure design.  Power options have not been advised yet but I again imagine sub thirty knots speed as the 48 Artemis.

Improve-it = Sessa C68

Sessa presents a new choice to the engine propulsion of its C68 flagship.  This new engine propulsion package comes from Volvo twin 900hp engines, with the latest third generation IPS1200 propulsion.  The new option makes it the fifth Sessa to be powered by Volvo IPS pod propulsion.  The twin Volvo IPS1200 power propulsion reduces 460hp per engine to the previous MAN 1360hp set up.  According to Sessa the Volvo IPS1200 showed reduced consumption of 25% and noise levels of 40% with top speeds of 35 knots.  The engine change also marked a redefined engine room and crew cabin layout.  This now offers a more spacious engine room and a new access point onto the deck.  The crew cabin is also more spacious with a separate bathroom and extra seating that can be converted into an extra berth.  Sessa also introduced new interior fittings with a new Cocoa wood choice, Havana leather and Ivory fabrics.  A new layout without the bar is also available on the main deck.  These new choices show the flexibility of the Sessa C68 current flagship in all parts of its build from layout, engine, propulsion, and fitting choices.

Powerboat OGP - Malta Round Two

It was to be a war of attrition as the boats lined up for the second round of the UIM Malta Ocean Grand Prix. With teams battling sweltering heat and rough waters, the result was adrenline-fuelled racing from start to finish in both the Evo and SuperSport classes.
In SuperSport, the FPT-powered Jolly Drive boat of Federico Montanari, Alfredo Zanardo and Giambattista Gabriele took early command, gaining traction off the line and leading their rivals at the first turn. Despite a slow start, fellow Italian’s Karelpiu kept the pressure on, closing the gap to the lead boat. The lead then changed hands five times before Karelpiu forged ahead and the race win looked a formality at the halfway stage. However, this is endurance racing and with the chequered flag almost in sight, driver Giuseppe Schiano di Cola fainted at the wheel, overcome with heat exhaustion. With his Fountain boat at a standstill it opened the door to Jolly Drive to take the win although the Ocean Grand Prix crown was won by Karelpiu who secured victory in yesterday’s race. Di Cola recovered swiftly following attention from medics.
The close fought action continued in the Evo class with Furnibo, piloted by Pierre Colpin and Frank Hemelaar taking another scintillating win to take the Grand Prix victory. The Belgium team had fought hard with Swedish-American’s Lucas Oil throughout, both boats trading the lead on numerous occasions. The first four laps were nail-biting and a tight finish looked a certainty until Lucas Oils lost power in one engine and were forced to limp home with both pilots, Michael Silfverberg and Nigel Hook’s anxiously looking over their shoulder as the German Searex team closed in.
Despite the Searex-powered Hercules Sagemann boat being hampered by ignition problems before the race – causing the team to start from the back of the field – German’s Douglas Verbanck and Siegfried Greve kept a steady nerve to eventually finish the race in second.
The British boat, Silverline, of Drew Langdon and Miles Jennings was forced to retire on the first lap with a broken torque sensor, a disappointing end to their weekend’s racing.
Attention now turns to rounds 3 and 4 of the UIM Ocean Grand Prix World Endurance Championship, which takes place in Den Helder, Holland over the weekend of 5-7 August.

New Model: Benetti Class 145 Vision

Benetti launches the new Class 145 Vision what is the new line up from this very famous status symbol Super Yacht builder.  As usual to Benetti there was great enthusiasm during the Catholic blessing launch ceremony, which was simple but quite moving. The launch was done in the ancient manner, with the boat entering the water stern-first from the ways of Benetti’s original launching site. The event was attended by the owner and his family and by all the people involved in building this beautiful vessel, that stands out for its modern and innovative design penned by Stefano Righini.  The Benetti Class 145 Vision takes over from the 140 Vision and is recognizable from the older model with darker window profile in the upper structure, although the owners still choose smaller vertical style windows in the cabins of the lower deck which open up again the big glass surfaces as outlined in the renderings of the project. Unlike standard Benetti Class 145 Vision for the interiors of hull sixteenth the owner choice went with Molori Design in collaboration with the staff of the shipyard. In standard the interiors are designed by Francois Zuretti. The contemporary style of the interiors is reflected in every item of furniture, down to the smallest detail, and are based on the personal tastes of the owner.  Molori created an atmosphere of refined decor, with a balance mix of classic and modern elements underscored by the gentleness of the natural materials used for the panelling.  Standard power for the Benetti Class 145 Vision is twin Cats 1300hp which give a top speed of 15 knots, and a cruise of 14.

Powerboat OGP - Malta Round One

As the green flag flew and the boats, complete with rooster tails, blasted into the distance, a new dawn signalled for international endurance racing and a new day for the crews; the waiting was over and a world championship title was at stake.
By the end of the first ever race in the newly formed UIM-OGP World Endurance Championship, Furnibo from Belgium, piloted by Pierre Colpin and Frank Hemelaar had taken the spoils and set the standards for the campaign ahead.
It was the Germans, Douglas Verbanck and Sigi Greve, in Hercules Sagemann that showed the early pace, gaining traction off the start with Lucas Oil, the Swedish-American challenger tucking in behind. It wasn’t long though before oil pressure issues hampered the Searex boat allowing Lucus Oil and Furnibo to pass.
The two boats fought a hard battle with Lucas Oil showing the early pace and leading for four laps. It was an impressive performance by the Silverhook, a newly built craft that had not entered the water in anger until this weekend. The race remained in the balance until the closing stages.
The British contenders, Drew Langdon and Miles Jennings in Silverline were content to take third place in the Evo class, passing the German boat mid-race and consolidating the position.
This was the weekend’s shorter sprint race over a distance of 47-miles but high temperatures and heavy seas combined to make for an exhausting ride. With cockpit temperatures reaching 40 degrees centigrade, several pilots suffered. None more so than Frank Hemelaar who collapsed on reaching land, what should have been a victory celebration turning into a dramatic few minutes on the side of the pontoon. He recovered shortly afterwards and will be fit to race tomorrow.
In Supersport, Antonio and Giuseppe Schiano di Cola and Francesco Calo in Karelpiu won the race in commanding fashion. The Neapolitan team RG87, racing a Mercury-powered Fountain, had started from pole and dominated proceedings from the first lap. Even the guile of the experienced Renato Guidi, Stefano Acanfora and Vittorio Foglia Manzillo, piloting SIF could do nothing to reel in the lead boat. They finished in second with Jolly Drive a distant third.
Now the preparation starts in earnest for tomorrows 74-mile endurance race, the closing leg of the UIM Malta Ocean Grand Prix.

Project: Rio 34 Espera

Rio presents the project of the 34 Espera.  This medium sized sport cruiser innovates in its style joining sleek lines with solution as found on a walk around boat.  Those who know the Rio brand might say that the North Italian company has already the Blu line which offers such a similar concept, but the 34 Espera does move into a more sportier aggressive category.  The 34 Espera will offer a four berth accommodation below which comes from a convertible V-berth sofa to fore, and a separate double bed mid ship cabin.  A more to the usual spacious for this size shower head will be located to starboard.  The cockpit which is the main living area of the 34 Espera uses all the beam of the boat with an L-shaped settee located to aft, central helm console, and a galley.  Other options like a more open sport fish layout will also be available, as the choice of a central hard top above the console. Power comes from a standard twin Mercruiser 305hp petrol gas engines, to optional Volkswagen 265hp diesel in a stern drive propulsion.  A twin outboard version named 34 Espera TA and powered by twin Mercury Verado's should also be available.
