Boat Ends on Breakwater in Loano

A fourteen meter sport cruiser ended aground on the near about of the Marina di Loano breakwater on Sunday thirtieth July at around 1600 hours.  The helmsman and crew reported the accident, with the sport cruiser becoming immobilized from moving after hitting low water in close proximity to the marina entrance.  Immediate the assistance of the Italian Guardia Costiera, who helped the guests onboard to safety and later organized the operation to remove and take the sport cruiser to the Marina Loano shipyard for lift out inspection and eventual repair.
The sport cruiser in this accident is a 1988 Giorgi 46 Open with a modified custom hard-top.  Designed by Fulvio de Simoni and Gianni de Canio the Giorgi 46 Open was produced from 1987 to 1996, becoming a good success thanks to its clean lines and three cabins in just thirteen meters of length.  Giorgi from Pesaro was founded in 1954 and will close its doors in 1998, until the name is sold in the early noughties.

One Injured as Sport Cruiser Explodes at Spinnaker Marina Queensland

A 63 year old boater was injured as an eight meter sport cruiser exploded and then went ablaze near the fuel station of Spinnaker Marina, Sandstone Point, Queensland, Australia at around 10:30 morning time of Sunday thirtieth July.  The boater was trying to turn on the engine after he was towed near a fuelling station, when the boat exploded and then went ablaze. With the explosion one of the two boaters was grievously injured, first treated by paramedics on the spot and then rushed to Royal Brisbane and Women's hospital.  Nearby boaters and marina personnel tended to the boat fire first with water pipes, with the Fire Fighting squad taking over the fight and managing to control it, and not allowing this to affect the nearby fuel station.  This boat involved in this fire was reported purchased about three weeks ago, with this being the first day out with the sport cruiser for the injured boater.
The sport cruiser in this fire is a Brisbane from Australia build Haines Signature 850 SB as produced from 1989 to 1995.  Haines Signature was founded in 1959 and today builds eight models from five to six meters in length.  The 850 SB has been Haines biggest build to date.

Project: Nordhavn 112

The next Nordhavn to be introduced to the market just might be an ultra-versatile 112-footer. Nordhavn Chief of Design Jeff Leishman has drawn the lines for a super yacht with all the amenities, features and luxuries of larger yachts but one which levels down in manageability requirements. The idea for this super yacht came when Leishman recognized a gaping difference between the Nordhavn 120 and its sistership closest in size, the 96, after the two models were docked alongside one another. The Nordhavn 120, while a masterpiece in style and function, is potentially intimidating to some buyers who don’t want the necessity of taking on a full crew to operate. Additionally, with the a huge trend of Nordhavn buyers who move up in size within the brand, the jump from 96 or even 100 feet to 120 feet was too considerable. Leishman says the key to the Nordhavn 112 is keeping it under 400 gross tons, the limit for which many systems and operations requirements are more manageable. He envisions only a small crew needed to help run the super yacht. Like most Nordhavns, it will be a full displacement hull with the capacity to carry enough fuel for transoceanic voyages. Leishman said he focused on creating outside areas for lounging and mimicked balcony-esque deck spaces found on larger mega-yachts, by way of incorporating folding bulwarks. There are also plans for a large spa tub on the flybridge and a grand lounging area forward of the pilothouse. On the aft deck behind the pilot house will be room to carry up to an eight meter tender plus a small inflatable and jet skis. She’ll also be fitted with a gym and beach-style swim step. In its current configuration the Nordhavn 112 has four queen guest cabins and one large owners’ suite, accommodations for up to six crew and a total of 10 heads. The Nordhavn 112 will be built out of steel, eliminating the considerable time and expense that FRP tooling requires, and allowing delivery of hull number on a much friendlier time schedule. Leishman also said that design change are much easier to accomplish with steel hulls. The super structure could possibly be constructed of aluminum or even FRP. Currently, Leishman and the Nordhavn design team are searching for a factory to construct the Nordhavn 112, honing in on European yards that specialize in steel construction. The first hull will be built on order.

Sad News Cujo Sinks Near Beaulieu-sur-Mer

Motor yacht Cujo, a one off very special Baglietto 20M which was cruising with seven persons onboard sank just about seventeen nautical miles from Beaulieu-sur-Mer on the early afternoon of Saturday 29 July.  As reported by the Gendermerie des Alpes-Maritimes, Cujo called a May-Day on 12:30 hours of 29 July reporting that the yacht is taking water fast and in danger of sinking, with French coast guard arriving on the scene and the crew assisted by a sailboat which was nearby in the area.  The seven guests and crew onboard Cujo were safe, unharmed with no injuries, and in good health and where later transported to Bealieu-sur-Mer.  Cujo sank in a depth of over seven hundred meters with French Gendermerie reporting no pollution, although they are monitoring the situation as the yacht was reported carrying around seven thousand litres of diesel fuel.
Cujo was a special one-off Baglietto 20M ordered by California Porsche dealer Johnny Von Neumann a repeat client of the Varazze shipyard who wanted something fast and unique.  For this Baglietto build this one off 20M with a unique super structure and twin 1350hp CRM engines reaching speeds over forty knots in 1972.  After Neumann, Cujo was sold to Adnan Khashoggi who then passed the yacht to nephew Dodi Al-Fayed who refitted her at CARM Shipyard in Lavagna.  It is in this ownership that Cujo becomes famous, thanks to it being paparazzied with Dodi and Diana in Summer 1997 in the Italian and French Riviera's.  Following Dodi and Diana deaths Cujo will be decommissioned in 1999, until Al-Fayed cousin Moody rediscovers it in 2015 and spends over a million in a refit including upgrading the CRMs to 1650hp.  After this the boat is sold in a bid to Simon Kidston in 2020, with him selling in auction less to a year to an Italian noble family.
This is a sad day for motorboat enthusiasts as Cujo was one of the most special yachts around, a jewel made by Baglietto on the successful 20M platform which warps time like a black hole.  Rest in Peace Cujo, until memory serves me you will not be forgotten!

New Model: Riva 82 Diva

Creative genius never rests and Riva, a globally famed nautical icon, has been a perfect demonstration of this for over 180 years. A creative forge turning out iconic boats from eight to fifty meters in length, every one unique but all sharing the signature aquamarine blue that makes them unmistakeable, Riva once again shows its extraordinary creative vitality by launching Riva 82’ Diva, the new flybridge built to open a new chapter in the history of the category. Launched in La Spezia, at the shipyard where 76-to-130-foot models are built, the Riva 82 Diva joins the sumptuous range of flybridges, like current successes from the 90 Argo, 102 Corsaro Super, 110 Dolcevita and 130 Bellissima – bringing to market not only a new boat size but also a revolutionary approach to the use of space. Like the splendid creations that have preceded it in the last 27 years, Riva 82 Diva bears the unmistakeable mark of Mauro Micheli and Sergio Beretta, founders of Officina Italiana Design, in collaboration with the Strategic Product Committee led by Piero Ferrari and the Ferretti Group Engineering Department. Riva 82’ Diva offers a new concept of both interior and exterior space, in which each environment is masterfully designed to optimise its use of space and functionality. The outdoor areas are undoubtedly the key focus of this yacht, designed to put guests in close contact with the sea and let them enjoy the cruising experience in spaces of unprecedented dimensions for the category, starting with the forty-square-meter flybridge, one of the largest for this size of yacht. Thanks to these generous dimensions, each living area on a Riva 82 Diva flybridge has its own dedicated space: the lounge with dinette and bar in the centre, protected by a carbon fibre hard top with glass panels, the sunbathing area forward and another lounge area aft. Down on the main deck is the boat’s main attraction, the spacious stern beach club characterised by two large bulwarks that swing down to create lateral terraces, increasing the area’s width by three meters. In the centre of the beach club, under the large sundeck, a garage can accommodate a jet tender of up to 3.45 meters and a Seabob. Forward of the beach club is the raised cockpit fitted with facing sea-view sofas, providing an unprecedented living area of nearly 35 square metres. The interiors offer new solutions combining the best in terms of design and comfort: in the saloon, the cockpit-level living space precedes the panoramic dining area, which is raised to mark out the settings visually without actually separating them. The galley, which leads to the helm station and, via the port-side external walkway, to the forward lounge area, is at the forward end of the main deck and is designed either to be closed off from or to open out onto the dining area in order to create a seamless space. Even the stair well connecting to the flybridge is part of the decor thanks to glass walls that dissolve the visual barrier between interior and exterior. The lower deck has four cabins; three guest cabins with ensuite bathroom and the full-beam owner’s cabin at midships.  The crew quarters has two separate cabins with a total of three beds, are amidships and accessed by a dedicated walkway on the side of the superstructure to guarantee complete privacy for both the owner and guests. With an overall length of more than 25 meters and a maximum beam of over six, the agile beauty of Riva 82 Diva is simply unique. The unmistakeable features of her predecessors such as the low and sporty profile of the superstructure, innovative new solutions like the higher and safer lateral gunwales with painted composite profiles instead of traditional stainless steel handrails, to breathe life into a yacht without precedent. The new Riva 82 Diva is powered by a pair of MAN 1800hp as standard or 1900hp optional engines.  The standard units deliver a top speed of 29 knots, with the larger motors giving up to 31 knots and a cruising speed of 27. The first Riva 82 Diva will make its official debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival 2023.

Princess Yacht Fire in Florida Kills One Woman

A 21 meter Princess motor yacht went on fire while berthed at Perry Hotel and Marina Key West, Stock Island Florida on 00:10 hours of Wednesday July 26.  The fire is believed to have left one 51 year old woman and her dog dead, with 59 year old husband and son badly injured.  The family was visiting the Florida Keys for the lobster mini season. The yacht was already engulfed in flames when Monroe County Fire Rescue arrived in the scene, taking them three hours to extinguish the fire.  According to reports the presumed dead woman returned back to the boat to rescue her dog, with husband and son also following her and getting injured in the process.  Husband and son where airlifted for treatment to Ryder Trauma Center in Miami.  Another family was on the boat but suffered no injuries.  The Princess motor yacht sank, and is a total loss.  Some unconfirmed reports are saying that the cause of fire is from Lithium batteries.
