Azimut Wins Hat-Trick in Asia Boating Awards 2019

More than just an award, it is now a validation: for the third year in a row, the Italian shipyard has been recognized by the jury of the Asia Boating Awards as the Company that has worked hardest to grow and expand its brand in the region.  As every year, the gala ceremony coincided with the opening of the Singapore Yacht Show; the Azimut Yachts Asia team went on stage to receive the "Best Brand Presence in Asia" award, in recognition of the efforts made to further increase the brand awareness in the region through the organisation of events, innovative marketing activities and a carefully planned and widespread presence, thanks to the network of local service centres and dealers. Promoted by two of the most prestigious Asian magazines, "Asia-Pacific Boating" and "China Boating", the Asia Boating Awards, this year at their 15th edition, are now among the most renowned awards in the world, since, every year, they are able to select the best players in the yachting industry, including shipyards, marinas and yacht clubs, companies in this sector and private individuals.  Marco Valle, Azimut Yachts’ managing director, commented on the news as follows: "The recognition as the best brand in Asia, which comes just a few months after the 'Best Motor Yacht in Asia' award given to our Grande 25 Metri, can only make us even more proud of all the work done in this region, which clearly recognises both the characteristics of Italian design and the cutting-edge technology intrinsic to our models. For years our team has been active in the area, supported by a very good network of local dealers, to increase the strength of the Azimut brand and, above all, to make sure that each customer feels valued and well looked after. And it wasn't long before we got results: today Asia represents for Azimut Yachts a constantly growing market, with increasingly good results achieved in recent years".  Currently, in Asia the shipyard can count on a network of exclusive dealers in Thailand, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Philippines, Japan, Taiwan, Vietnam and China.

Feadship Inspires With Rebuild of 1954 Super Yacht

Feadship has embarked on a major rebuild of the 1954 motoryacht Istros, giving this 42-metre superyacht an all-new aluminium superstructure while retaining her elegant original hull. The result will be a virtually brand-new Feadship, built to the highest standards of Feadship quality and featuring the latest equipment.  Istros was originally built by Amsterdam Shipyard Ltd. G. de Vries Lentsch Jr. in 1954 and was one of the largest motor yachts built to date in the Netherlands at that time. Contemporary newspaper articles were most impressed with the luxurious outcome of a two-and-a-half-year project on behalf of the Greek shipping family Pappadakis. One journalist was awestruck by the violet-blue bathrooms, the advanced radar system and, most of all, by a white telephone which could be used to “call people anywhere in the word from wherever in the world the yacht may be.”

The Group’s portfolio grows up to 8 brands confirming its positioning as the leading atelier of the international nautical market.  Alberto Galassi, CEO of Ferretti Group, commented: "A clear and elegant beauty lies even in numbers, and the 2018 fiscal year figures show us once again that making beautiful and unmistakable boats is still the best route to follow and the winning solution for success. It is increasingly clear that "winning easy" is just a slogan and that to stay at the top and grow steadily as Ferretti Group has been doing for some years, it is necessary to move fast and remain responsive in a market that is constantly changing. Our shareholders, who in the 2015-2018 four-year period invested 154 million in Research and Development and reinvested in the company all profits earned are, fortunately, the first and most certain ones about the need to never stop. 'Never change a winning team’ but, if a champion arrives let’s make an exception. That’s why this year Ferretti Group enhanced with the entry of Wally, an extraordinary brand that led the Group, with its 8 world famous brands, to boast the most qualitative and varied range of the entire Italian nautical industry.  Going back to numbers, Galassi continued, “In the last few years we have created and presented to the world 29 new models and, from 2019 to 2021 we are aiming to produce 27 new serial models with an average length of 97.3 feet, pushing us further and further into the construction of large boats. This is possible thanks to a 2018 that consolidated the Group's position from a complete financial relaunch point of view and certified its indisputable commercial capacity. In the navigation world, in exhibitions, in marinas, according to the sector professionals and to the nautical enthusiasts, Made in Italy and Made by Ferretti Group are the most important things, thanks to a record of style and inspiration that has brought us to where we are today and will lead us to even greater goals in the near future."  Furthermore, thanks to the 64 million euro invested in industrial capacity from 2015 to 2018, expansion and renovation works were carried out by the Group's shipyards. In particular, the Super Yacht Yard in Ancona was the focus of an ambitious renovation project aimed at creating an industrial hub at the highest level of innovation, technology and excellence that extended the area to over 80,000 square meters and that by 2020 will provide the plant with 10 construction sheds, a 670-ton travel lift and a private marina with 14 berths available.

Riva Thrills Public with the Master Bridge Tribute

A legendary and moving story told in true Riva style, with passion and originality. “The Master Bridge (La Plancia)”, screened in its premiere during the fourteenth edition of Cortinametraggio, is a tribute by Ferretti Group to the genius of Carlo Riva, two years after his death.  In 15 intense minutes, the film celebrates the historic headquarters in Sarnico. The star of the film, in fact, is the Plancia, Carlo Riva’s famous futuristic office that overlooks Lake Iseo.  Extending out over the lake like a majestic yacht, the office was designed by Riva himself along with architect Giorgio Barilani, and is considered an authentic architectural masterpiece. Carlo Riva was so fond of the Plancia that after he sold the shipyard, he rented it and continued to use it as his office for almost ten years.  The short film highlights the wonders of this magical space and the legendary history of the entire shipyard. The film treatment and direction are by Leopoldo Caggiano, who has already won awards at Cortinametraggio. The film tells the story of the journey of a young filmmaker, played by actor Gabriele Stella, in search of the secret and the essence of the Riva myth. Following an enlightening tour among the yachts under construction and an interview inside the Plancia with an enigmatic Giorgio Marchesi, who plays the shipyard manager, the young filmmaker grasps the enchanting power of the most famous speedboats in the world. The finale, evocative and surprising, is a touch of class that makes the heart race and evokes the poignant strength of the Riva myth.  Intense and measured performances were given by all the actors: along with Giorgio Marchesi and Gabriele Stella, also Elettra Mallaby and Claudia Gambino. “The Master Bridge (La Plancia)” was produced by Maddalena Mayneri’s Reef Comunicazione.  Two years after the death of Carlo Riva, the greatest creator of yachts of the modern era, to whose memory the film is dedicated, The Master Bridge celebrates the essence of Made in Italy craftsmanship, excellence and attention to detail.  Entrepreneurship, master craftsmanship, cutting-edge technologies and innovative design are in fact still the distinguishing features of the brand, enhanced by Ferretti Group and masterfully described in the film.  These are the same distinctive elements that over the years have strengthened the bond between Riva and the world of cinema, winning over international actors like Anita Ekberg, who owned a Tritone, or Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, who used a Junior as the tender of their yacht. As well as Brigitte Bardot, photographed beautiful, wild, and free on the French Riviera on her Florida, or Sean Connery, who owned the historic Rudy model, and on to Sofia Loren and George Clooney. These and many other stars have chosen models from the Riva fleet, the symbol of essential elegance and icon of timeless style.

It was the third win in successive years for the young champion.  Rob Swincer's team took a number of trophies home.  Andy Cameron, skipper of Riviera 51 Open Flybridge Kraken, had a double reason to celebrate with Heaviest Fish and the Calcutta win.  Tournament founder Peter Teakle this year handed "rod and line" control of the tournament to local Riviera owners and fishing enthusiasts Russell and partner Gabriella.  Riviera Dealer Development and Sales Manager David Thorpe was on board for the tournament and said: "Russell and Gabriella are fantastic organisers so the future of this great tournament is in fine hands."  Russell and Gabriella were delighted with the results of the tournament.
Riviera owner Rodney Longhurst said: "Our entire Riviera team is proud to support this great sustainable fishing tournament and sincerely thank Russell and Gabriella for an outstanding effort in their first year at the helm. We are delighted, of course, that more than half the fleet this year were Rivieras."

Viking Sixth Annual Key West Challenge

Forty Vikings from 42 to 82 feet and a record 475 participants descended upon the southernmost city in the United States last week for the 6th Annual Viking Key West Challenge. Ben Sharpe was the winning captain for the fourth time, leading the Viking 56 Gypsea to victory.  "The Key West Challenge has been a success every year, but this time around the energy level, excitement and fishing was at an all-time high," said Viking President and CEO Pat Healey.  After a captain's meeting at Dante's Tiki Bar that featured delicious food, fun prizes and lots of camaraderie, the teams headed off the following morning for a glorious day on the water. A total of 45 sailfish were released and one swordfish was caught on day one. Gypsea topped the Day One leaderboard with five sails released followed by the Viking 82 Mr. Grinch with four sails. The Viking 62 Tami Ann also released four sails and took third on time. The teams steamed back to the scales at Conch Harbor Marina to weigh their catches and pose for pictures. The Viking 44 Miss Peggy Sue II and captain/owner David Heeter stole the show with a 108-pound swordfish, which was donated for lunch the next day!  A pool party and lunch, a kids dock tournament and a poker run highlighted a relaxed but festive lay day. In the kids tournament, which was sponsored by The Billfish Foundation, Colin Dicembrino took first place, with sisters Ella and Mia Wilson placing second and third, respectively. "This is what it's all about - passing on the passion for fishing to the next generation," TBF President Ellen Peel said.  The fishing turned white hot on the final day, with 87 sails released. The Viking 48 Fish Wish released eight sails and caught an 8.3-pound dolphin. Last year's champ, the Viking 55 Ragin Cajun, was right on their heels with seven sails and a 21.4-pound tuna.  Gypsea had a solid day two as well, with five sails. But it was their dolphin that turned out to be the difference-maker. With an overall point total of 1,004.6, Gypsea edged second-place finisher Mr. Grinch (1,000 overall points) to take the 2019 Viking Key West Challenge crown. The Mia concept by designer and boat builder Franchini takes more center stage and here we present the hard top version.  The most cruiser of the Franchini Mia 6.3 sport yacht the hard top version is again all about versatility to its owners, from two main deck and two lower deck layout choices.  The difference in the main deck choices is for an astern galley or a larger galley to starboard.  The lower deck choices go for a four cabin with separate entrance for the owners midships stateroom and a guest cabin for kids, and or a three cabin layout with larger owners stateroom at midships.  The Franchini Mia 6.3 can be powered by twin Volvo 600hp or optional 725hp engines with IPS pod propulsion.

Project: Cantiere Delle Marche Deep Blue 43

Cantiere delle Marche is delighted to announce the sale of Deep Blue 43 a new, fully custom 43-meter explorer yacht designed by Horacio Bozzo Design.  Deep Blue 43 is the latest addition to the yard’s significantly active order book. The contract has been signed last December and the latest project details have been defined in these last few weeks. The yacht is already under constructionist with delivery due in 2021.  A full custom build, Deep Blue 43 will take full advantage of Cantiere delle Marche’s experiences and its approach to yacht building that has proven being extremely successful and rewarding for all parts involved. Deep Blue 43 has been commissioned by an experienced Owner who, in the past years, owned yachts built by shipyards such as Feadship, Lürssen, Blohm and Voss. He is a repeat client for CdM, a yard which gained his full confidence having enjoyed the feel of comfort and safety of his Darwin 102 cruising in the Med but also sailing the expanses of the Pacific Ocean, the Atlantic and reaching the wild beauty of remote destinations and the best diving spots in the world.  The mutual trust established between this client and Cantiere delle Marche team is of extreme importance to the good result of the whole process that will lead to the completion of a complex project such as Deep Blue 43.  Deep Blue 43 inaugurates a new collaboration with a world-renowned yacht designer: her exterior lines have been designed by Horacio Bozzo Design who is based in Viareggio Italy.  Her clean, vaguely severe profile with a raked bow and compact superstructure captures the very soul of an explorer vessel combining it with the elegance of a luxury yacht that will stand the test of time. All shapes, volumes and lines compose a harmonious geometry while her roomy body encompasses luxury social areas and very large and comfortable crew quarters, as requested by the Owner whose plans include long term cruising to reach the farthest corners of the world.  Guest areas are spread over three decks plus a Sun Deck. Deep Blue 43 features a nicely organized interior layout with twelve guests accommodated in six suites, four on the Main Deck and two on the Lower Deck. A cozy saloon on the Main Deck and a large panoramic sky lounge on the Upper Deck are at guests disposal to relax in comfortable and bright environments. A huge cockpit features all amenities including a large swimming pool and lots of space to relax. Deep Blue 43 interior designer is still to be disclosed.  Deep Blue 43 has a full displacement naval architecture by Sergio Cutolo Hydro Tec office, offering large volume 440 Gross Tons and the smoothest of travel even in rough seas ensuring excellent comfort and total safety. Engineering has been developed by the yard technical department in collaboration with Hydro Tec.  With a total length of 42.9 metres, a beam of 8.60m, thanks to hull geometry, large fuel tanks, and extremely frugal consumption, Deep Blue 43 will have an extraordinary range.

New Model: Perini Navi MY 25 Eco-Tender

Perini Navi present the new MY 25 Eco-Tender the first motor yacht launch since the company’s re-branding, and its first ever planing motoryacht.  The 25 Eco-tender is effectively a super sport yacht tailored to the requests of her experienced Perini Navi owners.  The project grew out of initial discussions with the owners for a bigger sailing boat. It emerged that the owners were very happy with their existing 50m Perini Navi sailing yacht, but their needs had evolved over the years and what they really wanted was not a bigger boat, but more flexible cabin space to accommodate single guests or children. As they prefer to anchor offshore, they also wanted to explore closer inshore in something more substantial than a conventional RIB.  The answer was a vessel with the same graceful looks, quality feel and luxurious comfort as the mother ship that could provide additional cabin space and be able to operate independently as an extension of the sailing yacht. The innovations start with a sophisticated hybrid propulsion system developed by Siemens, which provides four operational modes for maximum flexibility: diesel mode with twin Man 1650hp diesel engines powered by two Hamilton water-jets for a maximum speed in excess of 30 knots, hybrid mode one engine drives its neighboring water-jet and also serves as a generator for an e-motor to power the other water-jet, diesel-electric mode with a 130kW generator supplies electricity for two e-motors to drive the waterjets, and Zero-emission mode for completely silent and emissions-free maneuvering or limited cruising, a battery bank can power both waterjets via the e-motors at around 8 knots for up to a hour.  In battery mode, for example, the tender will be able to cruise at low speed in marine parks or other environmentally sensitive areas with no emissions and no noise. But on request of the owner, close attention has been paid to minimizing noise in all propulsion modes and contractual sound levels are below 55dB throughout. Unique also on the MY 25 Eco-Tender for her size is the I-Bridge Multitouch navigation system by Team Italia. All the onboard systems, including the hybrid propulsion, can be managed using the high-res 4K touch screens, trackball and jogger. The monitors can be raised to different heights in cockpit or navigation mode, and include an augmented reality function that overlaps navigation data with video images.  Moreover, an Anchor Watching System system can display and control all the equipment necessary for monitoring the boat at anchor. In fact, it provides a full around image around the boat and tracking of traffic using the radar systems, thermal camera or search light, and can be programmed to sound a proximity alarm.  Equipped with a double VSAT system for internet connection and three Iridium telephones, the Eco-tender can remain connected to the mother ship at over 100 Mbps even when tens of miles distant.  Another request of the owners was that guests should be able to board or disembark from the tender easily and safely from the deck of the mother ship. The high hull bulwarks mean that guests can literally step across from one deck to the other.  The innovations continue with the exterior layout and on-deck amenities. In addition to the comfy aft cockpit fitted with lounge seating, sun-pads and a fixed swim platform, there is spacious dinette sunk into the fore-deck that further serves as a viewing area from where the owner can pursue his hobby of nature photography.  The fresh and contemporary interior, also designed in-house, is based on brushed teak and white lacquered joinery, and features a full dinette-salon and galley on main deck. Below deck, there is a full-beam VIP suite, a double cabin forward and a third cabin with twin single beds, all with en-suite bathrooms. A crew cabin with independent access is located forward of the engine room bulkhead.

Project: Heesen 50m Project Aquamarine YN 18950

Heesen is to present the project in the newly designed 5000 Aluminium Class: Project Aquamarine. This fast-cruising, all-aluminium motor yacht sports a brand new hull designed by Heesen’s brilliant in-house naval architects, who worked closely with renowned hydro dynamic specialist Van Oossanen Naval Architects.  Van Oossanen carried out the computational fluid dynamics tests and optimized the hull shape, before a 1:16 scale model was tested in the towing tank in Southampton, UK.  The optimization of the hull design has enabled an efficiency gain of 12%. This important result was achieved by raising the transom and making it sleeker, and in addition propeller tunnels were incorporated in the hull. This means that the 5000 Aluminium class features raised propellers, which in turn has decreased the draft to just 2.15 meters. Such a shallow draft makes Aquamarine the perfect yacht for cruising in the Bahamas as well as in the crystal clear waters of the Mediterranean. A pair of interceptors will guarantee optimal dynamic trim at high speeds.  Thanks to the optimized hull design, it has been possible to install MTU’s new 3433hp green oceanic engines, which have been specially developed to operate with a Selective Catalytic Reduction unit to reduce NOx emissions. As a result, Aquamarine is the first fast-cruising yacht below 500GT to be IMO Tier III compliant. In line with Heesen’s wider philosophy, the new 5000 Aluminium Class reduces the carbon footprint without compromising on speed or performance, and the installation of soot filters on the generators makes the package complete.  A clean and modern profile by Omega Architects creates the perfect wrapping for this progressive technological masterpiece.  The raised aft deck completed by sun pads, allows for a full height multi-purpose tender garage that doubles as a luxury beach club connecting to the flush swim platform, bringing guests close to the water. To maintain a clean profile line the rescue tender is conveniently stored under a hatch in front of the wheelhouse.  A tranquil Japanese-inspired theme leads the interior, which has been designed by Cristiano Gatto. Twelve guests are accommodated in four spacious and airy guest suites on the lower deck and a master stateroom forward on the main deck.  YN 18950 Aquamarine is currently under construction at the Heesen facility in Oss and is available for delivery in January 2021.

blogger - Twelve Years and Counting

It's been over twelve years since I founded PowerYachtBlog, year 2007.  The inspiration come from what at the time was Valencia Sailing.  A sailing rag and stick blog mostly focused on the Americas Cup, which I was very much following at the time and since 1999.  I think that period was the best time for sailing and boating in general.  The Americas Cup was a healthy does of publicity to the general public, due to the huge media following for the 2000, 2003, and 2007 Americas Cup events.  I think and including the one of the 1992 these where the best events the sport ever had.
PowerYachtBlog has since started with a structure which was very much unchanged, what we are doing less since some years now are the boat reviews, and I know some would like to see more of these but they have time frames in doing them, that currently I cannot afford.  Still the blog has expanded in some areas, as the blogger article every month which I think gives a perspective I have about and regarding the industry in general.  What ever is happening here I hope you viewers and followers are enjoying it.
Would be interesting to see if you feel the blog needs something new or fresh and what it is.
