Boat Review: Posillipo 65 Technema
The Technema hull is renowned for superior sea keeping standards over other deep vee shapes, and is a status symbol of Italian design being introduced by Posillipo in the early eighties with aggressive profiles accentuated by the stylish wings which give a particular dry ride without the need of a high ride. The 65 Technema hull shape is a deep vee, with a 13 degrees aft dead rise offering distinctive performance with top speeds of 33 knots and a continuous cruising of 28 knots, giving a range of 330 nautical miles with the bigger engines option.
Competition
High competition in this size range, showing just how much demand has been growing. If one had to look back ten, fifteen years you would have had a smaller and different builders list with only Italians and USA builders. One thing striking tough is how much the Italian influence shows up in this size, not only as the main brands for this type of yachts but also the design influence they have had over the years. It is really clear to passionate people who have a certain experience to them, just how much the Italian design shows up, with the little exclusion being for the Hatteras 64.
Aicon 64 Flybridge - the Sicilian attack, close call to perfection, 4 cabins option
Astondoa A 66 GLX - Spanish build, Italian design, spacious saloon
Azimut 62 Evolution - low profile sport flybridge, open plan saloon
Carnevali 65 - all around curved looks, plenty of different layouts options
Dominator 68 - modern design with classic conception, plenty layouts to choose
Fairline 68 Squadron - latest comer from UK, big flybridge and master cabin with office
Ferretti 630 - classic modern, galley area aft of the saloon makes it a winner
Hatteras 64 Motor Yacht - USA med touch, feels big, 4 cabin option
Fipa Maiora 20 - classic, similar concept with Posillipo but higher customization
Princess 67 - another British contender with great clean looks
Sunseeker 60 Manhattan - 64 ft overall, main saloon all for entertainment
Uniesse 65 MY - 2007 model saloon with 3 areas, 4 cabin is standard
VZ 64 - replaced classic VZ18 in 2006, space is luxurious and welcoming
WILD CARD: Mochi 64 Dolphin Flybridge - lobster flybridge, spacious aft cockpit space

Monthly News - January 2008
The prestigious British magazine “Motor Boat” has selected Doma as one of the most impressive new launches at the past International Barcelona Boat Show. Is in that way how the Doma 4 has been defined as the “Barcelona Beauty”. The new launch from Astilleros de Alicante clearly shows the international expansion strategy of Doma. As Motor Boat has pointed out, one of the evidences of the Boat Show is to confirm the evolution of Doma, the “Spanish growing marque”. According to this publication, the Barcelona Boat Show has unveiled the new and “thrilling” Spanish launches, which “much temp the British buyers”, among which the Doma 4 has shown to be one of the stars. This recognition from Motor Boat adds to the acclamation that Doma 4 has received since its world premier last November. And the passion for design that Doma represents has been again remarked by a prestigious publication.
Azimut Show 2000 Metres Above Sea Level
From the extraordinary beauty and elegance of the Azimut 43 S amid the islands of the Mediterranean to the glossy luster of its bordeaux color, characteristic of the “S” line to which it belong, against the snowy backdrop the French Alps. The Azimut 43 S is in these days the star and the symbol of this exclusive prestigious resort, an Olympic site during the Albertville 1992 Winter Olympics and a holiday destination for French and Russian high society and Europe’s biggest tycoons. The Azimut 43 S is choreographically included in the Alpine context: the yacht’s wake has been made by snow artists and sculptors to create the fascination of a yacht plowing through the waves of the sea... amid splendid snow-covered peaks. In the sixteen days of the show the yacht is being visited by the exclusive guests of Courchevel 1850, who will be able to dream about their next summer vacation aboard one of Azimut’s prestigious yachts, symbols throughout the world of contemporary elegance, comfort and distinction.

Ferretti Wins Best of The Best Award
Ferretti Yachts has once again played a starring role in this year's prestigious "Best Of The Best Award", presented by the "Hurun Report" magazine. The prize is awarded on the basis of the results of interviews with 660 Chinese businessmen, who are invited to nominate the best product from a select range of luxury companies from all over the world. The survey was carried out between May and November 2007, reflecting the opinions of entrepreneurs and operators in this market, which currently has the largest growth rate among the world’s economies. During the ceremony, the "Hurun Report" magazine awarded Ferretti Yachts with the "Best Luxury Cruising Yacht Award 2008", recognizing for the second year running the yard's leading position in China.
Hatteras Moves Production To New Bern
Hatteras Yachts has announced that over the next several months it will gradually shift production from its Swansboro plant to its larger New Bern facility to take advantage of productivity gains there. Though Hatteras is forecasting a double-digit growth in sales for 2008 versus 2007, Hatteras management is confident that improvements in its manufacturing process at New Bern will allow consolidation of its boat building activities there to satisfy production commitments. Upon completion of manufacturing Hatteras product in June, the Swansboro facility will be available for manufacturing of other Brunswick boat brand yachts. Over the course of this production shift by Hatteras, 200 positions will eventually be eliminated at Swansboro. Those employees with necessary skill sets may be given an opportunity to possibly transfer to New Bern. For those employees who do not stay with the company, Hatteras will offer appropriate severance and other assistance.
Pershing Wins Bert Performance Yacht 2008 In China
On Thursday, January 10th at an award ceremony held in Shanghai, Pershing, the Ferretti Group brand and famous Italian shipyard specialized in the production of luxury yachts, was presented with the prestigious Best Performance Yacht 2008 award, on the basis of the statistics established in the “Best of the Best” survey. This demonstrates for the second year running that the Chinese market and its rapidly expanding class of entrepreneurs see the Marches-based company as one of the most prestigious “Made in Italy” brands.
Riva Hits St.Moritz Ski Runs
If the mountain will not come to Mahomet, Mahomet must go to the mountain. Following this principle, Riva celebrates the beginning of 2008 reaching his owners and lovers who, in winter, leave the sea for the ski runs in the most exclusive locations of Europe. In December the first Riva Corners were inaugurated, giving brand lovers the chance to admire miniatures of the famous yachts and photographic panels running through images of the Riva history. Two special corners can be admired at the renewed Carlton Hotel, former summer residence of tsar Nicholas II built in 1913 and facing the St. Moritz lake, and in the exclusive Corviglia restaurant, which, placed at 2500 m, is one of the highest Yacht Club in the world. This new project couldn’t miss to include also the Queen of the Dolomites. Cortina, the Italian ski resort par excellence, hosts in its famous Cristallo Palace Hotel & Spa a miniature of the Rivale and three panels of the Riva Historical Archive, telling the evolution of the shipyard from the origins in 1842 until today.
Riviera Scoops The Pool In Gamefish Tournament
Riviera scooped the pool at the Riviera Light Tackle Masters game fishing tournament held off the Gold Coast over the month of January. Rivieras took out both first and second team places. Overall Champion Boat went to Reel Deal, a Riviera 37 owned by Les Corby. Les took delivery of his boat on the Thursday before the event started, just in time to complete registration. Runner up boat went to the new Riviera 48 Offshore Express, Freelance, in its very first tournament. A fleet of 56 boats, from trailer boats of less than 20 feet up to an 85-foot cruiser, competed through the three-day tournament in often difficult sea conditions. A total of 15 marlin were tagged and released. According to Gold Coast Game Fish Club President Craig “Grinner” Newton, it was one of the most successful events ever run by the club.
Sarnico Group Logo
Four companies working in the nautic field are gathered under one sole logo: the starfish, the most charming among the marine creatures with its typical pentamerous symmetry which represents an advanced example of geometry in nature. A perfect symbol for those who design and build boats, right through the refinement of the shapes create a great “feeling” between man and sea. The five typical arms, that in some specimens may reach the number of fifty, symbolize activities of expansion and extension and depict notably the link among the different companies through the centre that sets the policy of progress and direction, as well as the starfish wraps its vital organs. Presently Sarnico group is composed by Cantieri di Sarnico, builders of prestigious yachts, Giacomo Colombo &C, producing speedboats and day cruisers of first class since 50 years, Sarnico II, a company located in Campania, dealing in moulding and assembling fiberglass manufactured products, Yacht Service Rapallo charged to give assistance and storage to the clients. The star, symbol of the sea and ideally the farthest point in the universe, represents the nautic identity of Sarnico group and points out the purposes of research and development beyond every aim.

Boat Review: Intermare 36 Fly
So after some critics from some friends that PowerYacht is too much of the bigger boats, although that is not the case as it is mostly the market which is pushing in that direction, I decided this month to have a better view of a medium sized flybridge cruiser the Intermare 36 Fly. Presented in the 2006 Genova boat show this new Intermare is an interesting entry medium level boat with an overall length of 38 feet. For interested parties Intermare also offers a hard top version named the 36 Cruise, obviously missing the flybridge and second helm station up top.
Accommodation
Intermare is renowned for seaworthy boats, and the fact that this model uses tradition shaft driven engines confirms this. The Intermare is also very economical to run with the Yanmar engines which deliver among the best power to weight but also a very good power to consumption levels.
Competition
As I said in my introduction this size of boat is very much pretty much abandoned by most of the builders, or to be precise by the companies who build a solid reputation around this size of craft in the eighties and nineties. Still if one looks closely at the market there is a handful of new comers but also some old builders who consider this size of utmost importance to there production. Here is what you have to look for:
DellaPasqua DC10S - classic squarish look, seaworthy, big inside with 2 heads
Jeanneau 36 Prestige - more space, similar in size and style
WILD CARD: Riviera 3600 Sport Yacht - hard top, patio door opens all, bunk 2nd cabin
Conclusion
The Intermare 36 Fly gives a lot of goods of form and function for an only 38 foot flybridge cruiser. Gone are the days when owning a boat this size was like having a ship, but I am sure that for people trading up this is still the case! Today there is less status symbolism in this dimension, so builders compete on the practical, trying to put a lot in the available size. Sure this was never easy and competition is always as heavy as it ever was. The 36 Fly wins the game if you want a sport looking flybridge boat that does not look heavy: extended fly, extended platform and spacious cockpit all say, I am made for the Med but this is not the only reason for having a look at this good looking flybridge cruiser.

Best of 2007
2007 is PowerYachtBlog first year, as this motor boats and yachts blog was started in March. 2007 was a year as the one before it, which continued the growth of the pleasure boating industry, with the old continent, and Italy first pushing this seven year or more lasting upward trend. The Best of Year list marks the year ended PowerYacht favourites. The criteria's for the Best of the Year are not really written, but technical innovation, and design challenge are the most appreciated two.
PowerYacht's Best of 2007 is the Sanlorenzo 40 Alloy. Since 2006 Sanlorenzo has a management lead by new owner Massimo Perotti. The 40 Alloy designed by Paszkowski shows the forward thinking direction Perotti is about, rivalling some neighbouring names in sleekness with technical innovation thrown into the design, see drop down balcony in the main deck owners stateroom. Worth a note is that Sanlorenzo also released the SD92 which would have just been in this list have it not been for this future looking new current forty meter flagship. Two new different lines for the first full two years in management show that Sanlorenzo will be a big force in semi-production super yachts in no time.
The others.
Absolute 52. Immediately trying IPS pod propulsion in 2006 with the current tri-engines 56 flagship, Absolute follows it a year later with two smaller 47 and 52 models. The 52 is a fully enclosed hard-top with patio door, and a lower deck fully dedicated to the three double cabins layout.
Baia 70 Italia. Baia is regarded top draw for surface drive high performance cruisers and yachts with comfort. The 70 Italia follows this with a fully enclosed hard top with disappearing act patio door, something seen in the 78 Atlantica launched in 2003. Modern classic style at its best.
Feadship F45 Vantage. Its been possibly decades since the Dutch super yacht renowned name offered a semi-custom platform. But here we are with Feadship offering this 45 meter semi custom model with the help of Dutch designer Sinot.
Ferretti 510. The astern galley on the main deck as presented in the fall 2005 with the 630 goes two into this second smallest size Ferretti. It works so well and is a layout revolution, that will feature in most flybridge yachts sub twenty meters in the near future.
Overmarine Mangusta 165. Mangusta has been breaking size record for what is called the maxi super sport yacht over the years since the nineties. Can anyone beat the Mangusta 165?
Riviera 4400 Sport Yacht. Riviera all enclosed hard top Sport Yacht range has been a success since debuting with the 3600 in 2005. In 2007 Riviera wants more of this and presents the 4700 and a more innovative 4400 Sport Yacht, this last also being its first IPS pod propulsion boat.
Sealine SC35. A new minimal design from Sealine which translates to one of the most spacious cockpit decks in its size. Reports say it is selling very well.
Uniesse 75 Open HT. Uniesse new 23 meter flagship expands the Carolina sportfish inspired looks as designed by Fred Hudson. Trademark distinct looks since founded in 1990 gets biggest ever.
Going large. Princess 95 MY. A new Princess flagship brings attention, taking the famous British brand to a new large size of 28 meters, three meters to the previous flagship. The 95 also brings Princess new MY range with a cleaner sleeker more standardised looks compared to the M series it replaces, with an 85 MY replacing the previous 25M flagship currently in project-build stages. Can Princess go bigger to this, only time will tell.
PowerYacht wishes to all its followers, friends, readers, and visitors a Healthy and Prosperous 2008 year.
