Yacht Fire in La Paz Mexico Kills One Person, Injures Three

A fire onboard a 23 meter motor yacht at Puerta Cortes Tourist Complex, La Paz, Baja California Sur, Mexico on 07:00 hours of Monday 24th July killed one person and injured three more, with the fire also jumping and partially burning another smaller fourteen meter Grand Banks explorer cruiser.  The fire was reported starting in the engine room of the 23 meter motor yacht, as crew where doing some work.  Three teams where dispatched to control the fire; Heroic La Paz Fire Department, La Paz Municipal Traffic and Security Directorate, and Municipal Civil Protection.  The person which was identified dead on the scene ended trapped in the engine room with the fire, while three more persons had injuries with a 37 year old also suffering extensive third grade burns.  The big 23 meter yacht eventually burned totally and became a total loss, while the smaller fourteen meter had its fire controlled, although it also received extensive damage to its bow area.
The 23 meter motor yacht in this fire is a Numarine 78 Flybridge as produced from 2008 to 2017 designed by Can Yalman and Tommaso Spadolini.  The smaller explorer cruiser is a Grand Banks 49 Classic as produced from 1980 to 99, with over 120 units sold.

Flybridge Cruiser Goes Down in Boston Harbor

A twelve meter flybridge cruiser with four persons onboard, two men and two women started sinking after hitting Quarantine Rocks off the North side of Peddocks Island in Boston Harbor around 16:30 hours of Sunday 23 July.  Massachusetts state Police Marine unit responded to the call of the flybridge cruiser helmsman with two officers and Marine Vessel 26 which was in patrol in the area, saving the four persons just as they jumped in the water for safety.  The four boaters where later transported to Charlestown Marina with one of the four boaters having a minor laceration injury being evaluated by Boston EMS.  The flybridge cruiser damage was a ripped port-side strut and one foot square hole, with Towboat US patching it, rigging it with half a dozen floating bags and towing her to Marina Bay for an emergency haul out.
The flybridge cruiser in this sinking is a Maxum 4100 SCB as produced from 1998 to 2002.  Founded by Brunswick in 1987, Maxum was created as a bridge brand between the entry level Bayliner and up market Sea Ray, with the company closing it in 2009 and moving its production to Meridan, only for this to close in 2016.

Project: Lyman-Morse Monhegan 42

Lyman-Morse is building the new Monhegan 42. A continuation of a long-standing relationship between Lyman-Morse and C. Raymond Hunt Associates, the Monhegan 42 represents the Maine's builder continued success with creating a series of semi-custom yachts that allow an owner to customize a vessel to suit their needs using an existing design platform. This proven process delivers all the attributes of a custom yacht, with far less lead time.  Hull no. 3 of the Monhegan 42 series rides on Hunt’s renowned deep-V hull design and will get power from a pair of Cummins 550hp, giving her a cruising speed of 28 knots, with a top end of 32 knots. The helm station of hull no. 3 is custom to the owner’s specific needs, with oversized 17-inch display screens, as well as bow and stern thrusters for easy docking. Below, there is a galley and dinette/lounge area for meal prep and dining, a head, shower, and primary stateroom forward. This owner wanted to be able to lie down on the settee and relax, so the team at Lyman incorporated a custom footwell into the layout to allow for optimal relaxation. Interior joinery is made from South American mahogany, with teak and wenge accents. Additional options abound on this model, demonstrating a key attribute to the semi-custom series approach. There are four available configurations, including flybridge, extended cruiser, and open. The 42 employs the SCRIMP resin infusion method which maximizes strength, reduces weight, and delivers a precise lay-up.  While hull no. 3’s owner is a longtime boater, this is their first foray into a semi-custom build. When surveying the industry, they chose Lyman-Morse due to their unparalleled ability to produce bespoke, semi-custom boats that deliver unrivaled performance, safety, and convenience at sea.

Sport Cruiser Saved from Sinking in Procida

A twelve meter sport cruiser started sinking when cruising around Procida on the morning of Sunday 23rd July.  The reason for the sinking are a bit mixed, with some saying the sport cruiser hit a reef in the area, while others saying it had water ingress from one of the propulsions systems.  Ultimately the sport cruiser was recovered and saved.  Procida is one of the three Phlegraean Islands, the other two being the famous Capri, and the nearby Ischia which is also the largest of the archipelago.
The sport cruiser in this sinking is a Rio 44 Sport Coupe as designed by Marino Alfani and produced since 2019.  The Rio 44 Sport Coupe was an evolution and replacement to the 44 Colorado, with its main difference being a patio door main deck.

New Launch: Benetti 67m FB278

Benetti presents m/y Calex a 67-metre hull number FB278, tailor-build and customized in every detail for a Californian owner. Launched in the end of 2022 Benetti FB278 has indoor and outdoor spaces that ensure absolute privacy and comfort and cater to the owner’s passion for exercise and well-being. Cassetta developed the streamlined, well-proportioned exterior contours, while the interiors designed by the Benetti Style Department feature alternating light and dark colour shades, with the extensive use of maple and American walnut, ivory-coloured leathers, and white statuary and crema marfil marble. The fabrics used for the decorative cushions are by Loro Piana Interiors. The yacht extends across five enclosed decks, plus a Sundeck, and stands out for her perfectly balanced volumes. The interiors were fitted out using the ‘box in box’ method and meet the highest construction standards, testifying yet again to the shipyard’s exceptional craftsmanship, with new technology used to minimise noise transmission and ensure silent navigation at a speed of twelve knots. The stand-out feature of the 67-metre FB278 is the Upper Deck, which has a surface area of 160 square metres devoted entirely to the owner’s personal spaces. A huge Master Cabin, containing a spacious suite, an elegant double bathroom, a private office and a walk-in wardrobe, extends from midships onto the foredeck outside and offers a 180-degree view, with two curved automatic sliding doors opening out onto an exclusive lounge area furnished with chaises lounges, armchairs, a table and an original gas fireplace. While wide open, it is a very private space, much of which cannot be seen from the upper decks as a result of the carefully planned volumes and depths. The foredeck can also be used as a touch and go helicopter pad, giving the owner the greatest possible freedom when coming on board. On the same deck, an open area in the stern, with a dining table and a relaxation area furnished with armchairs and other seating, is complemented by an interior lounge with a TV cabinet. The stern area on the Main Deck hosts guests in a spacious open-air lounge, while inside we find the main lounge, with a table seating 12, sofas and armchairs, followed by the galley. The owner also wanted two large VIP cabins on this deck, one on each side of the yacht, with two garages of different sizes in the bow for the main tender and various water toys. The four guest cabins, two doubles and two with twin convertible beds, are located to midships on the Lower Deck and completely separated from the accommodation in the bow for the crew of sixteen, which at the owner’s request is decorated with materials and furnishings similar to those used in the guest area. Separate guest and crew flows and the use of dumb waiters ensure maximum privacy and excellent service on board, connecting these areas with the galley on the Main Deck and the upper decks. On the Lower Deck amidships, is the large engine room, Benetti’s first on a full custom yacht this size to fully comply with TIER III regulations because it is fitted with a scrubbing system for the exhaust gases from both the propulsion and generating systems. In the bow, the spacious swim platform and the beach club are connected to the Main Deck by two fixed stairways. A gullwing door opens onto the swim platform and lets light flood into the interiors of the beach club, where a long swing-down hatch on the starboard side provides easier access to the water and even more light. The Bridge Deck, which has an outdoor space containing a lounge area furnished with bar, sofas, TV cabinet and barbecue and is served by a pantry, revolves around the captain and the wheelhouse. The large captain’s cabin is separated from the officer and crew quarters to be close to the ship office and the futuristic helm station, which features a touchscreen console designed by Telemar. On the Sun Deck, the only deck not served by the lift, a central area with gym equipment and a Jacuzzi pool ensure the utmost in comfort and well-being.

Sport Cruiser Catches Fire in Coconut Grove Marina Florida

A twelve meter sport cruiser reportedly unattended went on fire while berthed at 2550 South Bayshore Drive, Coconut Grove, Florida at about 21:30 hours of Friday 21 July.  Miami fire rescue responded to the fire, and managed to control it in less to hour.  A delicate operation also because the sport cruiser was berthed near Monty Raw Bar Restaurant.  No one was injured from the flames, with the fire fighters also controlling the fire and stopping it from spreading to other boats and the nearby restaurant.  An investigation is under way to what caused the fire what seems to have started in the engine room, and then spreading upwards.
The boat in this fire is a Cruisers 390 Sports Coupe, as produced from 2007 to 2011.  The 390 Sports Coupe came out as a replacement to the 370 Express and was replaced by the Cruisers 41 Cantius in 2011.

Sea Ray Ends Beached in Lago Maggiore

A nine meter Sea Ray sport cruiser ended beached in the Camporella area of Lago Maggiore in the North of Italy on the evening night of 21 July.  A costly error of navigation which according to reports from the area made the sport cruiser do about thirty meters in low water before ending aground, mostly because the Lake is currently sitting about one meter less in tide to what is on current electronic charts.
The Sea Ray in this beaching is a 305 Sundancer as produced from 2009 to 2017, strictly for the European market, but based on the 2003 launched 315 Sundancer with some design differences, like the radar arch, port holes, and the addition of a three part hard-top option. The 305 Sundancer was replaced by the Sea Ray 320 Sundancer.

Two People Saved from Baja Powerboat Fire in Traverse Bay

Two people where saved when a Baja six meter powerboat went on fire and then sank in West Grand Traverse Bay, Michigan on Friday 21 July.  Nathan Greenwood the good Samaritan which saved the two boaters also filmed the event, and the moment the two crew finally decide to jump into the water.  It was an intense moment with the two boaters looking to be out of senses walking around the Baja powerboat while it is burning more each second, and finally after some shouts of encouragement by the Greenwoods decide to let it go and jump into the water.  The Baja powerboat sank in over twenty meters of water and was recovered the following Sunday by Lake Marine Services.
The Baja in this fire is a 21 Hammer model as produced from 1997 to 2000.  The 21 Hammer was the performance looking powerboat of five models sharing the same hull, including the more powerful and three foot longer Baja H2X.

New Launch: Heesen 67m YN 20067

Heesen has launched YN 20067, named m/y Sparta. At 66 metres, YN 20067 is Heesen largest steel super yacht so far. Sparta grew out of the Project Avanti concept which Heesen presented with Winch Design at the Monaco Yacht Show in 2018. YN 20067 immediately impressed for its yacht's athletic lines, and the design has remained true to the original concept, with only minor adjustments made to the swimming pool. Winch Design expertly incorporated Heesen's DNA to create a unique, low-profile, sporty, and elegant yacht that looks simply stunning on the water. YN 20067 sports a classic Snow White livery with a contemporary touch: metallic Venetian red and metallic anthracite grey accents that give her a particularly dashing look. The super yacht's profile is characterised by a reverse bow, augmenting her apparent length and emphasising her slender form, which is complimented by a bold and assertive sweep of thermo-bonded tinted glass from bow to stern.  The lifestyle on board YN 20067 revolves around family and togetherness. The centre of the social whirl is on the main deck aft, where a full-beam main saloon connects perfectly with the low, open-air beach terrace for enjoying life in and next to the sea. A transformer passerelle platform provides easy access to the water, while the 6.5m infinity pool is also a breath-taking sight, offering a visual link between onboard life and the vastness of the ocean.  This Heesen super yacht outdoor spaces feature custom-designed furniture by Winch Design and beautifully crafted by Siebensee and Leerdam. A matching custom limo tender, a mini version of the mothership, is conveniently stored, along with the water toys, behind the gullwing doors of the forward garage.  Winch Design made the most of the yacht's generous 1,200 GT interior volume. The general arrangement boasts two separate owner's suites on a private deck and four guest suites on the main deck. A movable partition separates the forward suites to create a full-beam VIP or a large playroom for younger family members. An elegant staircase and glass elevator serve all three decks. The lower deck is home to a 65 sqm wellness area, Japanese-inspired, featuring an elliptical whirlpool, steam room, sauna, gym, and beauty area. Carefully considered movement flows throughout the accommodation areas will allow the crew to work efficiently and unobtrusively.  The Winch Design interior is based around three different elements, with each deck representing a different component: the lower deck is themed around water, the main deck around earth, and the upper deck around air. Linking all the elements are the staggered panels of an oak staircase by London furniture maker Alex Hull, with vertical lighting to bring its intricate carving to life.  The earth-themed main saloon features dining chairs with seat backs upholstered in real palm leaf. In the relaxed seating area, a large coffee table takes centre stage, made from two parts of a dark-stained trunk of oak, and featuring a leaf-shaped, forest green marble top with a leather finish, to provide a tactile and 3D effect.  The décor of the master suite on the upper deck aft beautifully captures the lightness of air, using soft fabrics, sky blues, mother-of-pearl inlays and an abstract patterned Tai Ping carpet. In contrast, the forward section is centred around the theme of space, with a constellation wall artwork as the focal point.  YN 20067 stunning interior features exquisite cabinetwork created by Heesen Yachts Interiors, with technical areas and crew quarters crafted at the shipyard. Heesen is one of the few shipyards in the world to own its fine cabinet-making company in Winterswijk in the eastern Netherlands.  Heesen 67m YN 20067 will now undergo the final commissioning phases in our harbour before heading to the North Sea for intensive sea trials.
