New Model: Jersey Cape 45 Devil Express

The new Jersey Cape 45 Devil Express, is the latest addition to this US, Carolina builder custom sportfish range, which starts from the 31 Little Devil and goes up to the 48 Sport Yacht, soon to be replaced as bigger model by a 66. Following the steps of the three smaller devils, the 45 fulfills itself as a luxury fishing battle machine with impressive finishing and luxury inside. As any battle wagon Sportfish, the 45 Devil Express has a free aft deck of vast proportions, made to make your fighting moments as easy as they can be. Move more forward and 2 steps up and you come to the raised area with a central helm station, and an l-shaped settee to port. Down below you have a single cabin, a spacious galley and 2 settees. One for dining with two opposite settees to starboard, and a vertical settee to port which transforms itself to a twin bunk berth. Forward is reserved for a seperate cabin available with a queen island berth, or a 3 berth vee arrangement with a double and a single. Standard power is from twin Cats C12 at 710hp, with bigger optional MAN of 800 or 900hp.

Project: Baia B50

Renowned performance yacht builder Baia resurfaces one of its myths, and a boat which propelled the Naples, Italian builder in the legends who's who list in the eighties, the B50. Updating a classic is never easy and the Baia B50 first presented in 1983 with a Don Aronow designed hull became a myth, being the Italian reply to another US builder legend. The original B50 also won the Venice Monte Carlo race in 1990 with an average speed of 58.5 knots and a peak of 75 knots. With the new B50 Baia keeps a big eye on the old design, remodelling it in certain features to the current age. In all this it increases the beam from 4.20 to 4.60 metres and instead of a side fitted alloy radar arch, this time it has a central aileron mast. Interior is also more luxurious now too, proposing a comfortable 2 double cabin 2 head layout, separate crew berth, 6 person dinette and galley opposite. For the outside deck the concept is for an open plan as seen on the 43 One. A hard top option has not so far been mentioned, but I would not be surprised to see this. Power wise the new B50 will offer various engine options from 1600 to 2700hp all propelled with Arneson Surface Drives, giving estimated top speeds from 46 to 54 knots plus. The hull shape is based on the original deep vee with a round stem aft in order to generate easy lift at the stern. Construction will be light and strong with infusion built method, using glass fiber in epoxy matrix.

New Model: Mulder 54 Open

Mulder Shipyard presents its new 54 Open a new shorter version based on the lines and concept of the 59 Open. This all-aluminium semi-planing yacht is equipped with the latest technologies and the finest materials. A first-rate performance is assured thanks an extensive technical package. Her length of 16.50 metres and beam of 4.80 metres make the new Mulder 54 Open a very substantial performance yacht. Two Volvo D9 engines with 575 hp each, combined with a total weight of just 28 tons, allow the yacht to reach a top speed of 26 knots. The Mulder 54 Open also features a bow and stern thruster, ensuring excellent manoeuvrability. The interior consists of whitewashed oak wood with wengé details and a sturdy floor with walnut rims. The fore ship contains the owner’s cabin, which includes its own bathroom, while the aft ship accommodates two guest cabins for two or three people each. Galley is finished with a stainless steel worktop and features a wide range of equipment. A state-of-the-art air conditioning system provides for efficient cooling of the fully insulated yacht on hot summer days. There is also a large tender storage in the aft ship, which opens by means of an advanced hydraulic system. A unique colouring scheme also sets the Mulder 54 Open apart. The superstructure is off white, while the anthracite hull is finished in metallic lacquer. Stainless steel rubbing strakes line the hull, while high-gloss teak cap rails add an air of luxury to the whole.

Project: Tarquin Trader 75 Superyacht

Following the successful launch of the Trader 70 Superyacht in 2007, Emsworth, UK based Tarquin Boat Company reveals her new larger sister and flagship model, the 75 Superyacht, set to be unveiled this spring. Featuring many new design innovations to allow both crew and guests to live comfortably on board, the 75 Superyacht will be the largest Trader on the water and has been designed to provide the ultimate in luxury. Designers have worked cleverly on the layout of the new 75 Superyacht to ensure that guests and crew can be accommodated separately, offering eight berths in four en-suite cabins. Crew berths for two to three members are contained in a crew suite with direct access to the galley, exterior decks and engine room allowing complete movement separation. The exterior of the 75 Superyacht exudes all the characteristics of a bigger boat feel with spacious areas with a flybridge offering Al fresco galley complimented by seating for ten, a dining area on the sheltered aft deck, and covered side decks allowing movement in all weathers. Inside, it is light and airy having been fitted throughout with Anigre, a light tan heartwood and a range of luxurious contemporary furnishings and fabrics. The main deck of the interior is a full 44ft from aft deck doors to windscreen and includes a full beam saloon, galley and dining area as well as a separate day head, wheelhouse with viewing seats and internal stairs to the flybridge. Designed to offer the Trader Generation II comfort, the 75 Superyacht is equipped with the latest in domestic appliances, as well as a full complement of entertainment services and flat panel TVs throughout the accommodation. As with all Tarquin Trader, below decks owners and guests have their own stairwells for greater privacy. The owners’ suite is aft, and is a spacious 28ft featuring also the signature transom window offering magnificent views. For the 75 Superyacht every detail of construction has been considered in terms of comfort on board like double bulkheads and isolated floors, matched with a comprehensive insulation package to reduce noise and vibration. The drive train includes also custom turbine shaped 5-bladed propellers and the POSEIDON coupling system isolates the engine from the yacht’s structure. Designed with comfortable and independent passage making in mind, the systems required for this type of cruising are supplied as standard.

New Model: Arturo Stabile 50 Stama

Arturo Stabile presents the new 50 Stama, much waited flagship debut from the Italian, Sicilian builder expanding its range from the 37 Stama Hard Top sport cruiser into and over the magic fifty feet entering yacht territory. This is an important step for this family owned company, presenting with this bigger model an innovative fully enclosed all weather hard top boat following the latest trends with patio door entrance and an electronic hard top, which can all open up for the good weather. The 50 Stama also follows the galley up solution, a convenient layout, offering an upper saloon with c-shaped settee for dining and further forward an l-shaped passenger seat for guests entertainment during cruising. Lower deck is reserved for the three double cabins, 2 heads and an other relaxing l-shaped settee. The layout here is traditional offering midship full beam owners cabin, VIP cabin to fore, and an l-shaped double berth in between. Power option for the 50 Stama are from Volvo IPS 600 Pod drives, or more traditional shaft lines with Volvo 575hp up to 715hp.

Engine: MAN V8 1200hp

MAN Engines & Components presents the new V8-1200 for yachts and pleasure craft in the 50 to 60 foot class. At the 40th boot in Düsseldorf the 1200hp diesel engine (882 kW) made its first public appearance. The appearance of the V8-1200 marks a logical addition to the selection of V-engines from the Engines & Components division of MAN Nutzfahrzeuge AG. With its 1200hp (882 kW) the 8-cylinder offers superb acceleration for yachts and pleasure craft in the 50 to 60 foot class. Maximum torque of 4000 Nm at as low as 1200 rpm sends a yacht into the planing phase fast, achieving high speeds in next to no time. Optimal design of the dynamic V8 engine enables it to maintain 1200 hp (882 kW) performance from 2100 through 2350 rpm. Here MAN engineers have demonstrated in unequalled fashion that a powerful engine can be both lightweight and compact. At 1.56 kilograms per horsepower, the new V8-1200 is even lighter in relation to power than existing MAN V-engines for virtually unaltered dimensions. Engines come with an SAE1 flywheel case to save space and weight. Cooling is by a plate heat exchanger, which allows flexible configuration of the cooling system. An advantage in engine installation by a boat builder is the modified exhaust system with a central gas outlet. All parts needing maintenance such as fuel and oil filters are arranged for ease of access. The water pump is driven by a gear instead of a belt.

New Model: Back Cove 37

A waited presentation from Back Cove this US Maine builder, presenting with the new 37 its biggest build so far. As all the small Back Cove the new 37 continues the single engine concept for top economy and low maintenance, which have built the popularity of this brand. Other news for Back Cove coinciding with the launch of its new bigger boat is the building method in infusion molding technique. The accommodation offers a lower deck, forward we have the master stateroom with an island berth, to starboard aft of the master is a full guest cabin with double berth, and opposite to port is a head unit with separate stall shower. Between the lower and salon sole levels, there is the mid-galley filled with natural light from the above windows, and fully equipped with a two drawer refrigerator, a freezer, microwave and deep stainless steel sink. In the main deck salon you have the helm station to starboard equipped with twin Stidd seats for him and the crew, aft of the helm seat an L-shaped settee, and to port a shorter settee. Large windows provide ample light and air while overhead a large sliding pilot hatch allows air to flow through this space. Another nice bonus is the cockpit saloon connectivity, with large swing doors completely opening up the salon to the cockpit. Power for new Back Cove 37 will come from single Cummins of 480hp up to 600hp, with a Yanmar 530hp choice also available. The big Cummins gives speeds of 27 knots max and about 24 knots cruising.

New Model: Viking 46 Open

Launced during the recent Miami Show, the Viking 46 Open shows the full range of high performance sportfish boats, this US builder is delivering. Designed for both fishing and cruising, the 46 Open is bursting with blue-water capabilities and yacht club panache. Tournament as well as casual fishermen will appreciate the attention to detail in the 121 square foot cockpit garnered from the thousands of hours Viking puts into competitive fishing every year, here nothing is left to chance so the cockpit is well appointed with amenities such as flush rod holders, recessed hardware, fresh and raw-water washdown systems, tackle stowage, rounded coamings and more. The observation mezzanine in the upper cockpit is accented with inviting Sunbrella cushions, and houses a bait freezer, stowage compartment and engineroom access. A step leading to the bridge deck doubles as an insulated drink box. The airy command bridge deck is framed front and sides with a wraparound windshield, equipped with wipers, washers and an integrated enclosure track. Three Murray Product adjustable helm seats afford ideal sight lines and the centerline helm is equipped with power assisted hydraulic steering and electronic engine controls. Abaft the command area, there is an L-shaped lounge to port with rod stowage below and a molded console to starboard with stowage and a refrigerator/icemaker. A sliding contoured door leads below to the salon, galley and overnight accommodations. A choice of one or two staterooms creates great flexibility. The master stateroom is forward in both plans and provides a double island berth with stowage below, a maple-lined hanging locker, air conditioning, reading lights and a 20-inch flat screen television. The galley features a three-burner electric cooktop, microwave/convection oven, large capacity drawer style refrigeration, Corian counters and sink with built-in garbage disposal, and Amtico vinyl flooring. A choice of high gloss or satin teak finishes is offered. Opposite the galley, the salon is fully air conditioned and has an L-shaped lounge with rod stowage underneath. Teak cabinetry, a 20-inch flat screen television, a stereo, carpeting and a teak high-low cocktail table are among the standard items. In the alternate layout, the salon is slightly shortened to allow for the second stateroom with upper and lower berths. Both layouts include a single head, which is nicely appointed with Amtico flooring, a fiberglass shower stall, a one-piece molded Corian counter with a built-in sink, electric MSD, linen locker, and air conditioning. In the engineroom, Viking’s engineering benchmarks are industry famous. Engine choices include the standard 900hp V8 MANs or 1100hp V10 MANs. The common rail diesels are mounted to powder-coated structural steel web frame beds that are secured to intermediate vacuum bagged composite bulkheads, which ensure drive train alignment for silky smooth trolling and minimal vibration. The engineroom is painted in bright white Awlgrip for easier maintenance and all daily engine fluid checks are inboard for accessibility. A variety of options, including a tuna tower, outriggers, and a fiberglass swim platform allows infinite customization possibilities.

Projects: Benetti 52m Sensation, Benetti 47m Imagination

These are two new range of yachts in the plan for the near future at Benetti shipyard: 47m Imagination and 52m Sensation, both with a family feeling and both generated by the creativity of Stefano Natucci. The interior designs, based on the Zuretti concept, will be fully custom. Inspired by the successful line Golden Bay, the steel 52m Sensation is a semi displacement yacht, direct evolution of the Golden Bay line with a glance at the future. Sensation, in schedule to be launched in 2012, and is a 52m x 9.6m yacht. Maximum speed is 18.5 knots. with a range of 3.400 nautical miles at 12 knots (economic speed). She is part of the steel - aluminium range. The 47m alloy Imagination is a fast alloy semi displacement yacht, being a reinterpretation of both the legendary line and the FB246 43m Diane. Imagination, in schedule to be launched in 2010, is a 47m x 8.8m. She can easily reach 24.6 knots as maximum speed with a range of 3.400 nautical miles at 12 knots (economic speed). Hull and superstructure are in Aluminium Alloy.

Boat Review: Falcon 86

Presentation
Falcon Yachts 86 presented in 1999 had a tough job to follow, repeat or beat the yards success with the 82S. Look ten years back and this entry level super yacht from the Viareggio builder is still in production and going strong. Designed by Architect Stefano Righini, renowned globally for his Azimut designs, he rarely gets mentioned for the Falcon Yachts designs which where among his first and still are his duty as at today. For Falcon, Righini takes a more traditional interpretation to the classic Italian yacht outside and inside. Another wise move for Falcon was to stretch the rules achieving in all this an overall of 86 feet but a measured length of under 80 feet, allowing the owner operator with competency to helm his boat with minimum crew.
Accommodation
Falcon 86 is a traditional two deck and flybridge yacht. Regarded by many as still one of the most spacious in its size offering, the 86 really gives space everywhere. The main deck welcomes you in a big environment offering a two level split area. Upon entrance you have the relaxing dining zone finding the big l-shaped saloon settee, followed by an eight person dining area, up a step you find the internal stairs to the flybridge, to port side you also have the separate galley room, more to fore you find the main deck day head, and forward you have the centrally located helm station joined to port by an l-shaped dinette for passage viewing.
Below is the accommodation deck, reserved for a spacious four double cabins en-suite layout. Here again spaciousness is the word, offering a traditional layout. Owners cabin at midships, VIP cabin to fore, and two double guests cabin in between. Worth to note is the big changing room in the owners room, but also that each guest bathroom comes with a bidet. Two crew cabins are located at the forward end serving also as a sound insulation for the VIP room, with entrance from the outside deck. Crew space is also more then what one gets here with a twin head and three or four bunk berths.
Performance
Not the highest performer in its size, the Falcon 86 is all about cruising in comfort and feeling safe. It is a solid boat although dry is not the word in head seas, but I am sure guests will feel safe in most rough seas with the Falcon 86, due also in part to its heavy displacement for its size and type. Steering is also on the heavy side especially when compared with yachts equipped with tunnel pockets. Hull is a planning Vee with warped design, deeper forward sections and medium closing aft. Performance is a top speed of 26 knots and cruising at 22 knots with the standard 1520hp MTU. If you want an extra two knots in cruising and max, bigger 1826hp MTUs are available.

It is incredible how the offer in this size have expanded over the years. When the 86 was presented there where only a couple of competitors. Nowadays in 2009 there is too much competition, which is not bad for the buyer really! Think of it this way, so much is found that this list includes only yachts in the 26 metres LOA if you go one metre less or above you have triple choices to this.

Conclusion
When Falcon presented the 86, they found a clever way to offer a pocket super yacht to its limits, with the right dimensions for the owner who likes to helm. This created a new segment which at 86 became like a new window to an entry level super yacht but still staying in the rules as a smaller boat. Falcon at the time also used this to there advantage, and created unknown spaces which still today set a benchmark in its size. All this made the semi custom 86 a huge success in the market which looking ten years back today in 2009 has paid off, still going strong in sales, and one of the most captain suggested yachts in the med.
