Itama Trophy Rally Comes to an End

Passion, power and sporting spirit, these are the keywords that express how the first edition of the Bocche di Bonifacio - Itama Trophy - Rally raced for two days to reach the finishing line on June 30. The event proved to be extremely popular with the public, press and the institutions involved, who were able to enjoy the splendid landscapes and atmospheres of Gallura and Southern Corsica, where the various legs of the car rally took place. In this two-day event, the love for speed, engines and real character was shared and enhanced by the local main sponsor, Piero Bianco’s Bocche di Bonifacio Yachting, the Itama dealer for Sardinia, Piedmont, Lombardy and Liguria. In fact, the Sardinian dealer found in the rally world the same purity and uncontaminated emotion that the Itama style of yachting is famous for. And as such it was the Itama FiftyFive with its classic blue and white colours that distinguished the opening evening, welcoming teams and public to the spectacular scenario of Santa Teresa.

Pershing and Itama Family Party

It’s partytime for Pershing and Itama. Friday July 19 from 6pm until late all the employees and aides of the two Italian companies, plus their families, enjoyed an evening of fun and entertainment in one of Italy’s most important science and technology museums, the Balì Museum in San Martino – Saltara in the Puglia Region. All the guests had complete access to the Museum’s exhibition space, which includes more than 30 interactive exhibits that allow visitors to experiment with natural phenomena for themselves. Thanks to a series of optical illusions, apparent paradoxes, mechanical teasers and tricks of the light, guests soon found that discovering the laws and theories of science can be extremely entertaining. Adults and children also had the chance to visit the Planetarium which seats up to 50 people and the Observatory. Here, with the aid of a reflector telescope, guests were able to observe the night sky while two astronomers recounted the legends linked to the various constellations. Pershing, a company that has always believed in promoting local concerns, has been working together with the Balì Museum for some time now. This is why a year after the Pershing Prime Performance event the fascinating science complex again played host to the constructor of the splendid Pershing and Itama yachts.

Pershing Sea Show comes to an end

The Greek capital was the culmination of its first ever “Sea Show”, the tour organized to present a world preview of the shipyard’s latest creation, the Pershing 72. This initiative is a totally new way of launching a product in the yachting sector. Consisting of four stopovers in various marinas around the Mediterranean, the Sea Show has proved to be a huge success in terms of visitors, visibility and sales, and Pershing can now count on a full order book until the end of 2009. To wind up this original yacht tour, over the weekend of June 28 – 30, more than 250 guests, including owners, journalists and aficionados were invited to admire the 72 footer moored in the waters of the Flivos Marina in Athens. For the occasion, this newly opened and highly prestigious dock was transformed into an open air club. On the evening of June 28 Pershing welcomed its guests there with an “under the stars” dinner and an abundance of good food and music. Tilli Antonelli, the Pershing president, was there in person to play host. During the evening the shipyard’s brand new model was on display for the guests to visit and admire. The two days that followed, on the other hand, were dedicated to sea trials for the press and potential Pershing customers. Athens was therefore the last chapter in this highly successful Sea Show, a truly exceptional tour that began last April and has passed through some of the most picturesque marinas in Croatia, Spain and Italy.

The latest Tecnomar Velvet 120 luxury yacht is the result of the shipyard’s long-lasting collaboration with architect Luca Dini. Its modern, dynamic and powerful lines combine with luxurious and sumptuous features. The interior design for the first 120 draws inspiration from the 14-15th centuries and imitates the Boulle technique, which takes its name from Andrè-Charles Boulle, the famous cabinetmaker who invented this distinctive style by decorating furniture with metal, brass and tortoiseshell inlays. Outside, the Velvet 120 yacht shows sharp and aggressive lines. Bright red hull and metallic gray superstructure add a modern contemporary touch to the entire yacht. The cockpit is spacious and roomy with a comfortable sundeck placed at the end of the stern. Teak beams cover the deck, the side gangways and the forward deck house, which has been custom-converted into a landing pad for an Augusta 109 helicopter. Boat Review: Alfamarine 58

Presentation
Presented in the 2002 season, the Alfamarine 58 is an eighteen metre classic styled fully open sports yacht much loved by the Central and South Italian customer. But not only as classic open yachts are lately getting higher market rating. Classic in lines and design, the Alfamarine 58 is an evolution of the 55 launched in 1990 with a completely renewed stern and deck, and changed radar arch windscreen design. Performing to the limits for a sport yacht, the Alfamarine 58 is full of modern design solutions, based on one of the best deep Vee hulls in its size.
Accommodation
The exterior of this yacht speaks for the inside, as we have what is a classic interior layout with three cabins all with there own separate head. Master cabin is forward and two identical guest cabins feature mid ships with twin in line parallel berths each. Interior dining area is a comfortable C-shaped settee to starboard. Galley is to port and is hidden by clean wooden top, becoming invisible when the cooking is over. A crew cabin with shower head is located aft.
Outside cockpit space is one of the winners for the 58, featuring a C-shaped settee to starboard, one of the most spacious in this size dimensions. An exterior wet bar and galley is located to port, just behind the comfortable dark blue finished helm station. A four person sunbed is located aft. While another sunbed is located forward on deck. Tender stowage is on the bathing platform.
Performance
The Alfamarine hull and 58 in particular is designed around the highly rated Renato Sonny Levi and Franco Harrauer deep V-design. If you want head turning performance I suggest you take the optional surface drive and big 1360hp engine option, which allow for a 48 knots max speed.  But the standard Caterpillar 1000hp engines and shafts set up still give a nice 36 knots of top speed with thirty knots cruising. Sea keeping in both versions is excellent with shaft drives handling big heads seas easier thanks to the lower starting planning speed these deliver. Still the Arneson surface drives would handle most solutions in the best of manners and also provide for better fuel economy at fast cruise which equals to an extended range.
Positive
superb performing hull
cockpit space and comfort
Negative
railing as optional
Competition
Competition in the open sport yacht seventeen to eighteen meter segment is ever increasing, but when you want something looking timeless and classic the result comes down to a few builders.  Criteria here is for open style no hard sport yacht, and three cabins.
Baia 54 Aqua - similar layout but more modern, flush deck, only with surface drives
Dalla Pieta DP 58 - modern design, only shaft drives, spacious crew or 4th guest cabin aft
Gianetti 55 Sport - extra 4th double cabin aft, very comfortable inside
Italcraft X 54 - 3rd cabin aft, nice cockpit layout, good hull and performance
Itama 55 FiftyFive - real classic yacht, similar layout with spacious galley
Sarnico 58 - aft third cabin, spacious interior saloon
Uniesse 57 Open - American sportfish style with Italian flair, comfortable cockpit
WILD CARD: Magnum 60 Furio - two cabins + crew, surface drives performance
Conclusion
The Alfamarine is a classic sports yacht for those who don't like to have a fashion boat, but something which is timeless and always good looking without forgetting modern design solutions as adapted in most of today's boats in this size dimension. If this is what you want I suggest you have a good look at the Alfamarine 58.

Class 1 - Arendal Norway Preview

The street circuit of powerboat racing, that is Arendal's Norway race which will take place this weekend. Over 200,000 people will gather in the fjords surrounding the race track hoping for a Norwegian win in what is the 10Th Anniversary for the town as a Class 1 venue.
Local's Jotun or Spirit of Norway will be the home favorites, but I am sure that UAE Dubai team Victory will have other ideas for the result of this race. The Victory team has a very successful record in Arendal, with former world champion Saeed Al Tayer taking 5 wins out of the 9 races held so far. This year started in a superb manner for the United Arab Emirates teams with Victory taking 1st and 2nd in Athens and the Qatar team taking 3rd and 4th.
The competition between locals Spirit of Norway and Victory Athens winner has already started off the course. The yellow card to the Dubai team over a squeeze start to the damage of the Norwegian team in the Athens race is pushing for further rules enforcement.
This weekend Grand Prix will take matters at it's place in the race course for the real competition.

America's Cup - Alinghi Defends and Wins the 32nd Edition

Alinghi won the 32nd America’s Cup on Tuesday afternoon on the waters off Valencia. The Swiss Defender won its fourth consecutive race in dramatic fashion, by just one second, to win the Match 5-2.
This final race of the America’s Cup was befitting of what has been the closest, most exciting America’s Cup in recent history. Emirates Team New Zealand spent much of the race ahead on the advantage line, but with Alinghi in strong tactical position on the right hand side of the race course.
It was a perfect day for racing on the waters off Valencia, with the bright, warm, Valencian sun generating a strong 14 to 17 knot sea breeze until the final moments of the race.
That scoreline doesn’t reflect just how close the racing was. In each of the last three races Alinghi has had to come from behind to snatch its victory. None was closer than the last contest when the Swiss were barely able to hold on for a ‘photo-finish’ win over the challenger, Emirates Team New Zealand.
Shortly after crossing the finishing line to guarantee the successful defence, Alinghi President and afterguard member Ernesto Bertarelli hoisted the America’s Cup trophy over his head, his team at his side, in front of a crowd of nearly 40 000 who had gathered in Port America’s Cup to share in the excitement.
The Commodore of the Société Nautique de Genève, Pierre-Yves Firmenich, and Michel Bonnefous, the CEO of the organisers of the 32nd America’s Cup, were on hand at the prize giving to see the team members of Alinghi pass the trophy from hand to hand, one to the other.

Project: Otam 45 Heritage

Italian boatbuilder Otam has restyled the external lines and deck lay-out of its Heritage 45 motoryacht to optimise the cohesion between shape, functionality and technology. Its tread plate is made entirely of teak with wide staves resting on an underlying fibreglass structure. In line with Otam's philosophy the 45 also has features to reflect the owner's personality: a metallic hull and deck colour can be chosen for internal lacquering as well. The interior further features black walnut woodwork, a neutral fitted carpet with a coconut style weave and leather sofa. It is subdivided into a spacious cabin for the owner with a bath and shower ensuite, a convertible dinette and stow-able kitchenette, guest cabin and a guest bathroom with shower. Powered by two Cat C12 engines of 710hp the yacht can reach a maximum speed of 45kt, but a super sport option of two Cat C18 engines with 1000hp is also available - and this will reach maximum speeds of 56kt.

Sergio Carpentieri 1956 - 2007

As is often the case at such times, we all realise that we have lost someone very special and important to us. Sergio Carpentieri has left us in a collision on the start of the first round of the German Grand Prix of the Sea in  , a talented powerboat racer. Always a huge sports fan, Sergio Carpentieri, born in his beloved Naples on 20 October 1956, embarked on his sports career at a very early age. Rowing was his first love, a sport to which he was very much committed and in which he achieved outstanding results, winning two Italian junior championships and taking part in two world championships. With his indomitable spirit, at the age of sixteen he became captivated by water polo. Again the results revealed the champion in him and he immediately won an Italian junior championship. He was however attracted by speed and at eighteen threw himself into the world of rally driving, although as a true Neapolitan and fanatic of the sea, he soon moved on to offshore and powerboat racing. The first inshore races were in the shadow of that great champion Antonio Gioffredi and in 1975 came the first participation in the Class 3C trophy competition at Naples. From then onwards he concentrated on water sports and in an incomparable career spanning over 30 years he won four Italian offshore titles in the 3 litre, 4 litre and 6 litre categories. He also won three European offshore titles in the 6 litre class and was ranked third three times in the world offshore 6 litre class and in Class 2. In 1985 he won the Bastia-Viareggio-Bastia event. He took part five times in the Venice-Monte Carlo event and won it once alongside Michael Reagan (son of Ronald). In 2006 he finished fourth in the P1 SuperSport class on the FB Design Sunracer 38 boat. He was competing this season as constructor of the Shipworks Carpenter 38 boat with two Yanmar 480 engines, a boat made to a design by the engineer Angelo D'Ettore. He died suddenly yesterday, leaving an enormous void for all those who appreciated his smile, joie de vivre, cheerfulness and the sunny nature that is the birthright of the place where he was proud to live, Bacoli, the small town facing Pozzuoli. The world of Italian powerboat racing has lost one of its greatest representatives. A great man.

Powerboat P1 - German Grand Prix of the Sea, Tragic Accident on Day One

Sergio Carpentieri Team Carpenter
Teams pay their respect to Sergio

The first leg of the Powerboat P1 German Grand Prix of the Sea was cancelled following a racing incident at the start of the race in which pilot Sergio Carpentieri suffered fatal injuries following a start-lap collision with Fainplast. The Italian throttleman and owner of Team Carpenter was rushed to hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The crew of Fainplast and Sergio's co-pilot, Luca Nicolini were unhurt although Nicolini was taken to hospital, suffering from shock. The tragic accident was captured by an on board camera placed on the Carpenter boat and shows that this was a racing incident. The sequence of events is as follows: - Fainplast ( Number 64) made a very quick start - Carpenter (Number 03) was running behind to the starboard side - Fainplast then suffered a mechanical failure resulting in a broken propeller and causing a rapid de-acceleration - The collision then occurred with Carpenter hitting Fainplast, the momentum causing the Carpenter boat to barrel roll. At this point Sergio and his co pilot, Luca Nicolini were thrown from the craft. Nicolini, who was admitted to hospital suffering from shock, has now been discharged.
With Day One overshadowed by the death of pilot and team owner Sergio Carpentieri, Powerboat P1 Management in consultation with the teams decided to race Day 2. The race will be dedicated to Sergio Carpentieri following yesterday's tragic accident. As a mark of respect for the much-loved Italian, a representative of each team layed flowers into the sea ahead of the race. In the Evolution Class King of Shaves continued there domination in this class as they won the German Grand Prix. This gave a narrow lead for the Fountain powerboat in this class. Wettpunkt.com had arrived in Germany as championship leader and looked certain to finish in second until a blown turbo midway through the race ended it's challenge and the team limped home in fifth place. OSG took advantage of this mishap to move into second but were robbed on the line by Outerlimits Powerboats or so it seemed! Infact, Outerlimits were disqualified for straying from the race course when the engines lost power, handing the runners-up place to OSG with Searex Germany third. The disqualification was a bitter pill to swallow for Outerlimits Powerboats who provided the crowds with a superbly enjoyable chase as Nigel Hook and Mike Fiore re-fired the engines and started to reel in the leading boats. In the early stages of the race this all-American boat had looked evenly matched for speed with King of Shaves, and more enthralling battles between these arch rivals look inevitable. The lone German entry, Searex, proved to be one of the stars of the show, much to the pleasure of the large crowds. The Fountain 42 piloted by Kurt Prufert and Siegfried Greve gave an impressive display in its debut race in the prototype class as did Limmi from Belgium who finished fifth. The Metamarine boats of Fainplast and Kiton made the decision not to run the race following the death of Sergio Carpentieri, who tragically lost his life during yesterday's first round of the Grand Prix. In the production Supersport Class Roscioli Hotels Roma posted another dominant performance. The win strengthened the Italian teams championship challenge although it was Buzzi Bullet that crossed the finishing line first, with Chinese entry, Sun Lik Beer, no more than a few boat lengths behind. Time penalties then demoted the British pair to second and Sun Lik Beer to third. Buzzi Bullet led from start to finish.
The result means that Championship leaders Roscioli Hotels Roma have extended their lead with the 2006 champions ExtremeBoat losing ground, having struggled with a propeller problem. Buzzi Bullet moves up into second place. Until the penalties were introduced for breaking safety speed limits, the third place battle between Sun Lik Beer and Chart Leader Roscioli Hotels Roma had provided the large crowds with excitement throughout. On the straight, the Chaudron 41 of the Italian's had a clear advantage but in the turns the tables were reversed. Behind them, VoomVoom.com was starting to show the true potential of the Yanmar powered Hustler Slingshot closely followed home by the Maltese entry Chaudron 2. The competitiveness in the production class is emphasised when the Sunseeker XS 2000 cleverly took sixth place from Extremeboat in the final lap.
