Class 1 - Dubai Grand Prix

Race 1
Arif Al Zafeen and Nadir Bin Hendi today underlined why they are triple World Champions with a faultless flag-to-finish win in race 1 of the Emirates/Dubai Duty Free Dubai Grand Prix. The Fazza pairing, who secured the 2010 Class 1 World title two weeks ago in Abu Dhabi, produced an effortless performance dominating the race from the start, completing the 12 lap, 50.42Nm race in 34mins 39.78secs at an average speed of 160.53kmh. Today's twentieth career win for Al Zafeen and Bin Hendi, already Victory Team's most successful partnership, makes them the third most successful partnership in the sport behind Steve Curtis and Bjorn Gjelsten. With the Champions out front and heading off into the distance, the race for the podium was fought out between Team Abu Dhabi and GSG Ceramic Design. The battle was eventually won by Team Abu Dhabi's Rashed Al Tayer and John Tomlinson, producing yet another impressive outing, improving on their third place in qualifying to take second place, their second podium in five race starts. After a disastrous morning practice session which saw GSG Ceramic design sidelined after a blown engine, a podium finish for Guido Cappellini and throttleman Giampaolo Montavoci, on his 51st birthday, was more than they had expected.
But their podium celebrations were short lived after GSG Ceramic Design failed post race scrutineering for a technical infringement relating to the restrictor, blow off valve and air box size specifications, and was subsequently disqualified. The post-race ruling elevates Welmax's Kolbjorn Selmer and Jorn Tandberg, who earlier in the day clinched the 2010 Edox Pole Position Championship to third spot, ahead of Negotiator in fourth, with Relekta and Skydive 2010 completing the top six. There was disappointment for MITI/GiorgiOffshore who stopped after three laps.

Race 2
Arif Al Zafeen and Nader Bin Hendi brought down the curtain on the 2010 UIM Class 1 World Powerboat Championship with their ninth win of the season on a day of mixed emotions at the Emirates/Dubai Duty Free Dubai Grand Prix. On the first anniversary of the tragic loss of powerboat champions Mohammad Al Mehairi and Jean-Marc Sanchez, the Dubai Victory Team's Fazza crew wanted to mark the occasion with a win dedicated to their team-mates. And on a day when Class 1 produced the race of the season, they delivered a fitting tribute to Al Mehairi and Sanchez winning from the front despite a titanic effort by Edox Pole Position Champions Kolbjorn Selmer and Jorn Tandberg in Welmax. The Norwegians pushed the UAE stars all the way losing out by just 3.81s after 67.74Nm of intense competition. Fazza wrapped up the 21st Class 1 win of his career with Al Zafeen at an average speed of 178.38kmph. Win number nine in 2010 also secured the Middle East Class 1 Championship for Fazza to add to the World and European crowns they had in the bag prior to the race. But the victory was never a forgone conclusion with the Welmax crew piling on the pressure throughout the race as they claimed second by just over fifteen seconds from Italians Guido Cappellini and Giampaolo Montavoci in GSG Ceramic Design in third. Behind the two leaders GSG Ceramic Design's Guido Cappellini and Giampaolo Montavoci produced their second impressive performance of the weekend to make it two podiums from six outings together this season. It was a stunning finale to a Class 1 season that has seen Bin Hendi and Al Zafeen win 75% of the races they have started and take the world title by a record 96 points over their nearest rivals. While Fazza and Welmax were having their own private battle at the front of the field, there were other bragging rights being fought over elsewhere. With their closest rivals Talib Al Sayed and Abdullah Al Mehairbi sitting out the final two races of the season after crashing in Abu Dhabi, Italians Giovanni Carpitella and Luca Fendi needed just four points to claim second spot in the World Championship and they grabbed the overall silver medal by claiming fifth in the race in British boat Negotiator. It meant Al Sayed and Al Mehairbi claimed third in the world in SkyDive Dubai. In the Middle East Championship, Team Abu Dhabi's Rashed Al Tayer and John Tomlinson claimed overall second place behind Fazza thanks to a hard-earned sixth place despite starting well behind the field thanks to a propeller problem on the first lap. Third place in the Middle East series goes to Selmer and Tandberg. Fourth place for Skydive 2010 was a marked improvement on yesterday's performance, but there was frustration for MITI/GiorgiOfshore completing just four laps before an engine problem ended their race, with Relekta stopping six laps later with a gearbox problem.

Web: Linssen Yachts New Web Site

Netherlands's Linssen Yachts presents its new world web virtual showroom. Founded in 1949 by Jac Linssen in Maasbracht who at the time was flourishing with over two hundred war damaged vessels awaiting for repairs. Linssen Senior at the time just finished his training as a shipwright specialized in wood machining which started his first works doing prefabricated teak made wheelhouses, doors, and later to wheels. But as ship business increased, the company required a metal working department, and this line in the business which started as repair facility was the launch of the first Linssen Vletten boats being built; rowing, work, and small flat bottomed all built of steel, a material which will characterized Linssen future onwards from there. The first yacht for Linssen was based on the Vlet, added with a handsome super structure and luxurious fit out. In the seventies Jos Linssen started the second generation of the company, and this marked the registration of Linssen Yachts BV, which was followed very shortly with the launch of the St.Jozef Vletten. the model which inspired today Sturdy models. The eighties also saw the development of other models the SL, SE, and SX series, and in 1995 the first Sturdy designed with Dick Lefeber was launched. Today Linssen has two ranges the Grand Sturdy, and Range Cruiser series which total sixteen models starting from the 25.9 Grand Sturdy, and go to the current 500 Grand Sturdy Variotop Mark II flagship. Linssen new virtual showroom is available in English, Dutch, German, and French languages, and takes you around with the following buttons: Home, Company, New Boats, Used Boats, Sales Representative, and Contacts.

Boat Review: Nord West 420 Flybridge

Presentation
A total different flybridge cruiser under the waterline, this is how Nord West set to build its 420 Flybridge model launched in the fall of 2005. The start for the launch of this model could not have been better being awarded Boat of the Show at Stockholm, Scandinavia in 2005, and two years later to this taking Motorboat of the Year Flybridge under 50ft for twice in a row in 2007, and 2008. So far no other boat has managed to take the IPC Awards from Motor Boat and Yachting and Motor Boats Monthly twice since they started them in 2000. The revolution of the 420 Flybridge is its accommodation, handling, economy to run, and very good top speed thanks to efficient Volvo stern drive or IPS pods propulsion. Many will tell you that stern drive are not good for flybridge but thanks to its length, good hull efficiencies, and new technologies Nord West managed to over come this obstacle and create a unique model in this size. This uniqueness in the 420's hull which was also the first flybridge boat to be equipped with IPS pods, and thanks to this also created a three cabin interior with all the berths being non bunk. Something still hard to find today and impossible in 2005 for a boat measuring thirteen meters.
Accommodation
Interior comfort is a big selling point to any motor cruiser, and thanks to its propulsion use Nord West creates unique spaces in the lower deck of the 420 Flybridge. But cosiness is predominant in all areas here, is also part of the Nordic nature of the 420 Flybridge. Welcoming you with a huge bathing platform aft where is possible to stow a large tender, two steps up lead you to a very cosy cockpit where an L-shaped settee is to be found to port side. To starboard is an integrated stairway which leads to the extended flybridge which has a central helm station with two co-pilot seats at both sides, and a spacious again cosy U-shaped settee aft. Worth of note is the luxurious unusual wood fitting out found in the exterior with the thick teak railing and toe rails aft being a feature of the Nord West 420 Flybridge.
Going inside into the main deck living area you find the saloon which is entered via a two part stainless steel patio door. Here natural light is abundant thanks to the all around windscreen windows which makes well for interior driving as well to create a nice atmosphere with the rich selected and varnished mahogany wood finishing. A C-shaped dinette to port, galley opposite with hidden wash basin and hob, entertainment area with flat TV on top, and the lower interior fully equipped helm station to starboard makes for the inside plan of the main deck.
A central corridor with three steps leads from the main to the lower deck, this having the three double cabins, and two heads. Forward is the owners suite; which features a central island double berth and personal shower head. Looking to aft and located to mid ship are two identical double cabins; which impress for the size, headroom and comfort. A guest second shower head with cubicle shower which is identical in size to the owners en-suite completes the spacious cabin sleeping area.
Performance
A big selling point for the Nord West 420 Flybridge is its performance which is to say the least, efficient, fast, and handles like a dream. This is so thanks to a different propulsion choice for what concerns a flybridge motor cruiser, and a lightly narrower to the usual beam. Two engines, and two propulsion choices characterize the 420 Flybridge. You can have it with Volvo D6 370hp in stern drive or IPS pod drives, or D6 435hp in IPS600 version only. Being a flybridge I would prefer the IPS version versus the stern drive especially for what concerns close quarters marina manoeuvring. Although latest generation modern stern drive which feature joysticks giving independent movement, and a powerful bow thruster will surely make things easier with this configuration, and some gains at the pump. The fastest and most efficient choice is the stern drive twin 370hp which gives a top speed of 36 knots, and a best cruise of 26 knots giving 345 nautical miles of range. My preferred 435hp IPS600 choice with 65hp more horses per engine gives a one digit less 35 knots top speed and a best economy cruise of 24 knots giving a 301 nautical miles range. The IPS500 370hp top speed is still fast giving a 32 knots, and a very efficient best cruise at 26 knots giving 298 nautical miles. Handling of the Nord West 420 Flybridge is impeccable and if you want a sports boat steering on a flybridge its very hard to do better then this.

Competition
Surely if I did the review for the Nord West 420 Flybridge in 2006 the list below will be a lot less and will only feature shaft driven cruisers with a third bunk cabin. But in the last two years some builders are following Nord West putting IPS on flybridge models, and this is creating some interesting competition. Criteria here is for a flybridge motor cruiser measuring over all thirteen meters and with three cabins.
Absolute 43 Fly - new in 2010, Med modern minimal looks, fixed hard top on fly
Astondoa 44 Fly - shafts or IPS, spacious main deck, Med looks
Carnevali 130 - shafts, more a two cabin boat, third cabin option is bunk
Dellapasqua DC12 SL - three or two cabin, classic deep Vee hull, feels big
Galeon 440 Fly - shafts or IPS, Tony Castro hull and design, fit out options inside
Intermare 43 - 3 or 2 cabins choice, third cabin bunk, spacious aft deck
Majesty 44 - Middle East offer, bunk third cabin, shafts
Prestige 440 - shafts, two or three cabins, third bunk cabin, Peters hull
Rodman 44 Muse - IPS pods, modern looks by Fulvio De Simoni
Starfisher ST45 Cruiser - flagship from this Portugal builder, IPS
Storebro 435 Commander - 2 or 3 cabin, spacious living, internal stair case, shafts
WILD CARD: Viking 42 Convertible - sportfish, ZF pods, 2 or 3 cabins
Conclusion
When Nord West set the project for the 420 Flybridge a lot of input and research was carried out by the Swedish builder in order to present a top of the class flybridge motor boat. The results are for all to see and the Nord West 420 Flybridge apart scoring points for its handling and accommodation layout with the dedicated press and taking three prizes in this feat, also took great care to offer an economic to run flybridge motor cruiser. Considering its performance which translates in less fuel at the pump and the comforts it offers at less length the 420 Flybridge real winner here is the customer who chooses this very clever Benny Martinsson project.

Class 1 - Dubai Preview

With the 2010 UIM Class 1 World title already decided, teams now turn their attentions on the Edox Pole Position and Middle East Championships in the final qualifying session and two races of the season at this weekend's Emirates/Dubai Duty Free Dubai Grand Prix. Welmax's Kolbjorn Selmer and Jorn Tandberg will be looking to end their season on a high as they bid to become the first ever all-Norwegian pairing to win the Pole Position Championship and the first Norwegians to win a major trophy since Tandberg's European title success in 2008. They go into the final qualifying session of the year in an almost unassailable position with a 15-point lead over World Champions Fazza, knowing sixth place will give them the title. But 'playing it safe' is not written in the Selmer-Tandberg racing manual, with the Norwegians likely to maintain their flamboyant, marauding style as they go after a fifth consecutive win in qualifying and their first 'recorded' race win of the year. Having already secured the 2010 UIM Class 1 World and European Championships, Fazza's Arif Al Zafeen and Nadir Bin Hendi now focus their attentions on trying to successfully defend their Middle East title. But to do so they will have to come from behind and overhaul rivals and neighbours Team Abu Dhabi who, after two of four races, lead the Middle East title race by a slender four points. The Fazza pairing has dominated this season, their seven race wins moving them onto 19 career wins a piece, to climb above multiple World Champions Saeed Al Tayer, Ali Nasser and Khalfan Harib to become the most successful partnership in the history of the Victory Team. With the news from Victory Team that they have very sportingly thrown their resources behind helping to repair Negotiator - their main rival in the fight for the runners-up slot in the World Championship - and by doing so confirm that Skydive Dubai, the boat that collided with Negotiator, will not race - the battle for the remaining podium place in the overall World Championship standings looks to be a two-way fight between four Italians. Negotiator's Luca Fendi and Giovanni Carpitella grabbed third place on their debut outing together in race 1 in Abu Dhabi and currently hold third spot, 16 points adrift of Skydive Dubai. Assuming their boat is repaired and ready to race, they should be able to defend their 26-point advantage over Guido Cappellini and Giampaolo Montavoci in GSG Ceramic Design, and look the most likely of the two outfits to finish in the top three, and possibly steal second place from Skydive Dubai. Cappellini and Montavoci, podium finishers in the season-opener in Brazil, will be looking to erase the memory of a torrid and frustrating last Grand Prix beset by technical issues and will be looking to get back on track in Dubai. Whilst a top three finish in the World standings, to add to his second place in the Europeans, would be a remarkable achievement by Carpitella in a season that has seen him team-up with four drivers in two different boats. Zabo Racing go into the last Grand Prix of the season full of confidence and looking to build on their last performance after it all came good for the team in Abu Dhabi. A solid qualifying session and fourth place in race 1 was eclipsed by a simply brilliant drive in race 2 by Paul Gaiser and Christian Zaborowski in Relekta, which gave the Norwegian outfit their first podium of the year, putting them third overall in the Middle East standings. Fresh from their famous first win together in race 1 of the their home Grand Prix, Team Abu Dhabi's Rashed Al Tayer and American race-ace John Tomlinson will be determined to end their season with a flourish and a title. Since teaming-up in Italy they have developed a formidable partnership and will look to cut out the costly errors that lost them podium places in Italy and Abu Dhabi, as they defend their slender lead in the Middle East Championship. After a promising first outing for GiorgiOffshore's Nicola Giorgio with Sandro Sardelli, picking up valuable points in both races in Abu Dhabi, a last minute change of driver sees Tomaso Polli return to partner Giorgi for the second time this season. Mohammed Al Marri and Giorgio Manuzzi enjoyed an eventful first race weekend together in the new Victory design, Victory 2010, grabbing a podium in race 1 and then spectacularly crashing out at the start of race 2 in Abu Dhabi. With the boat fully repaired the Italian-Emirati duo are likely to be up at the front challenging for podium places, but will now run in the colours of the sidelined Skydive Dubai. The action starts with first practice on Thursday afternoon, a second practice on Friday morning is immediately followed by qualifying in the Edox Pole Position and Race 1 - 51.07Nm, 12 laps including one long lap.Ä€ A final practice on Saturday morning is followed by Race 2 - 68.56Nm, 16 laps, including two long laps.

New Model: Cabo 44 Hardtop Express

Cabo presented an innovative take on a new model with the 44 Hardtop Express in the Fort Lauderdale show. Replacing the 45 Express, the new Cabo 44 Hardtop Express takes a better look to the pleasure market, and splits a good division between the often separated two boating worlds. Cabo is not the first here as the Australian Riviera has since 2007 already presented two models with a similar concept. But with all the attention going for the all weather three part covered hardtop, the 44 Hardtop Express still challenges the fisherman's with what the builder says is the largest aft deck of the category. If this is bigger as Cabo says to the 45 Express it replaces, then it is surely one of largest as the American builder is known to have among the largest cockpits in size category. The 44 also improves interior offering below, with more space and berths to the old 45, with a two stateroom plan. Hull design continues Cabo partnership with renowned underwater specialist Michael Peters, who presents a medium Vee sixteen degrees aft shape. Power is four choices from a standard Cummins 715hp up to twin Cats 1150hp engines.

Project: Buddy Davis 58 Express

After being announced for quite some time Buddy Davis present some pictures for the 58 Express project. This express Sportfish Yacht should capture the qualities of the smaller 48 and 52 Express models and add to them more levels of comfort. A split exterior aft deck characterizes the plan outside with a sea level cockpit being made perfect for the game fisherman. On the raised deck will be the relaxed area with an L-shaped settee, exterior galley, and a central helm station. Below is a two stateroom plan, with a forward owners en-suite cabin, L-shaped saloon, and galley. To my knowledge the 58 Express should share its hull with the flybridge 58 Sportfish, with the usual Carolina flare upfront, and tumble home stern as designed by renowned architect Donald L.Blount.

New Model: Tornado 50

Tornado presents its new important flagship the 50 Classic, a big fully open sport yacht. The new big Tornado takes similar characteristics of its most successful model, the 38 and puts them in a fifteen meter size. But Tornado and head designer Franceso Guida did not only follow outside lines but also the practical elements, and the economic way of the entry level Tornado. Lets say the economic ways of building and running the 38 are all part of the new 50 Classic. That means not only Classic for looks but also the running and a more simple way of going on the water. Tornado does also not exaggerate on the accommodation front by keeping sleek lines a fundamental characteristic to this new flagship. Down below space is a two cabins, with an owners room to fore, a twin berth cabin to mid ship, a convertible dinette which adds two extra berths, and a head with separate shower room. A well spaced airy L-shaped galley just opposite the saloon completes the lower deck. Power is to be from twin Volvo 435hp with IPS pods which give a fast 37 knots top speed.

Improve-it = Atlantis 36 Verve

A year after its debut Atlantis present the 36 Verve with a new important option, that of the Joystick for stern drives by Volvo. This continues the innovation philosophy which is at heart of the 36 Verve, that to be a technological easy to use single handled sport cruiser. Project: Sessa C32

Sessa continues its new boat development program, and just after launching the C48 a few weeks ago in Genoa presents the project for its new entry level sport cruiser the C32. This model seems to be a replacement to the C30, although there is still no official word about this. What surely strikes the attention in the C32 is the hard top made of light canvas and fiber-glass which covers a big part of the cockpit, aft deck. Another surprise comes from Sessa putting the owners room to mid ship in this size of nine meters sport cruiser. Below is also a salon which converts to a double, shower head, and galley. Here Sessa also continues its recent trademark colors and joinery as seen on the latest models; chocolate leather, and cinnamon coloured walnuts. Improve-it = Sciallino S23 Cabinato

Sciallino are proud to announce their first hybrid boat born on the S23 Cabinato in cooperation with Mizuno Marine from Japan, and Italian Scandiesel. Sciallino first hybrid powered craft with diesel and electrical engine will be introduced at the Yokohama boat show in Japan on March 2011. A new step in developing a modern and ecological boat, based this time on an entry level traditional cruiser the S23 Cabinato model. The Steyr engine running diesel mode will drive the Sciallino's to the open Japanese sea and ocean, thus emphasizing the hull's strength and seaworthiness. On the other hand, one could turn the diesel off, to activate the electrical modem and the traditional gozzo hull will softly glide by the shore, quiet and respectful for the environment, with the great efficiency of full displacement cruising. It seems many builders are trying hybrid power, although this seems so far more of interest to large plus seventy feet sizes, all smaller to nine meters boats.

Trojan Year

We are in the end of the 2010 year and unlike the forecast as at January many boat builders are still left hammering and suffering the crisis. 2010 has been a surprise Trojan year, and while many where thinking that the worst seen in 2009 was over we have seen quite a few builders in difficulty, with some companies also going bankrupt this year. May be reality is that this is the size of the market we have to live for the short term ahead, and after a decade of two digits growth the industry is realigning itself.
2010 showed the market to be still slow to what regards most sizes of new boat sales, and the used brokerage market while picking up in sales in recent months still remains on the over supply of things. This last definitely happened thanks to easy credit of banks and leasing schemes as before 2008 which brought loads of new customers to the yachting world.
The year which is ending also showed the full extent of the crisis to the UK builders, who in 2009 in the full force of the recession had the advantage of the weak pound which at the time helped reduce the inside pressure thanks to competitive exporting prices, and also for making importing boats in the UK looking much more expensive. While the pound is still away from its stronger side, the UK currency today is in more solid territory to how it was in the early part of 2009, and this actually saw two British builders change owners, and a third the well known Sunseeker who in the middle of the year also needed the entrance of fresh capital and a new major share holder.
The good side of 2010 seems to come from the US and some innovative products who seem to capture the attention of the market. The big apple, country home to the largest boating market and users in the World has seen better sales in 2010 with the increase coming from the smaller sub fifty feet sizes. While prise for innovation has also been a characteristic in the second part of the year with semi displacement or a hybrid of this hull shape with attention for a more economic to run cruisers and yachts, capturing more to the expected customer following.

Beneteau Group Improve Profits in 2010

Outlook for growth in 2011 confirmed. 2010 earnings: Income from ordinary operations totaled €45.2 million for FY 2009-10, significantly higher than the €37.5 million initially estimated. This performance has been achieved primarily thanks to the Boat business turning its profitability around more quickly than forecast, while in the Housing business; residential housing launch costs have been higher than planned. The Boat business recorded €32.5 million in income from ordinary operations, with an operating margin of 5.7%, compared with the 3.4% forecast. More specifically, this significant improvement in profitability reflects the success of the new models released. It has been achieved after €3 million in financing, corresponding to the costs for launching the large powerboat business. The Housing business generated €12.7 million in operating income over the financial year, with €18.5 million contributed through the improvement in profitability on the leisure homes business, which posted an operating margin of 9.5%, compared with 8.5% last year. In addition, its financing for residential housing launch costs represents €5.8 million. Net income came to €31.4 million, compared with a €10.4 million loss last year. In view of these results, a proposal will be submitted at the General Meeting on January 28th, 2011 to pay out a dividend of €0.12 per share. Outlook for 2011. The Boat business, buoyed by the Group's brands holding up well, in addition to the growth drivers from the 2015 development plan, is confirming its ability to achieve 20% sales growth. It is benefiting from the positive results from the autumn shows. However, it will be necessary to wait until the end of the winter shows to gauge the extent of the upturn on the various markets more accurately. For the Housing division, the Group is able to confirm the level of business forecast, coming in at around €230 million. This target is based on the good level seen on the outdoor accommodation market, this division's main activity, in addition to the promising outlook for the residential housing division. Indeed, the residential housing business, currently in a launch phase, is expected to continue to have an impact - although to a lesser extent - on the division's profitability.

Cigarette Bring Your Own Party
Pier 57, the Tennessee-based dealer for Cigarette Racing Team and Marine Technology rolled into the Florida Powerboat Club Poker Run Village on a new set of wheels. A custom-built, custom-wrapped 50' trailer, pulled by a customized International rig caught people's attention, but when the two sides opened and the wing-span revealed a deluxe, gleaming, glowing and pulsing hospitality lounge, jaws dropped. It's like a rocking, rolling nightclub. He purchased the transporter, then transformed it into a uniquely designed and constructed venue to entertain friends, customers, and prospective customers. The traveling party has a custom-built 15' stainless steel table at its center, backlit and surrounded by "diner"-style bar stools, accessed by stairs on both sides. The air conditioned space is brilliantly lit with neon accents and has stainless Viking appliances to accommodate food service. Hot dog and popcorn machines provide snacks, while a 65" flat screen, other TVs and surround sound provide exciting entertainment for guests. LED lighting creates ambience and mood-an added design feature--on portable tables that change color and extend the footprint of the robust venue. A rear "work shop" area is anticipated to become a Mercury Racing dispensary for emergency parts. Two Pier 57 service technicians are part of the traveling crew; they will be on hand to provide mobile assistance and a problem-free powerboating experience. Full service will still be done at the dealership. A front lounge features tan cow hide recliner couches, white ostrich leather covered walls, a full entertainment center, a Viking wine cooker and pull-out refrigerators and freezers for other beverages. While the trailer was totally renovated, with walls removed and raised doors installed, the truck was customized by the noted Chrome Shop Mafia. The trailer wrap features the brands of Pier 57, Cigarette Racing Team and MIT and draws on Pier 57's racing history when its trailer was used as a race support shop. Legendary racer, Art Lilly, Woods' former throttleman, came to Key West for the trailer unveiling, reliving memories of racing days at the APBA World Championships. The trailer is planned to travel to key Poker Run and boating events across the country as part of Pier 57's national tour.

Moonen Wins Best Power Award

Moonen Shipyards is delighted to announce that the Moonen 124 Northlander has won the category Best Power 24-40 m at the ISS (International Superyacht Society) 2010 Design & Leadership Awards. The award was immediately placed prominently on display onboard the yacht, on display at the Fort Lauderdale boat show. Recognised as a benchmark for superlative achievement, the awards were presented on 28 October at the 20th Anniversary of ISS's Awards Gala in Fort Lauderdale. Northlander had made her first Atlantic crossing to take part in FLIBS, and her captain Peter Davey reported that the first Moonen 124 handled the very challenging seas and weather conditions exceptionally well. Styled by René van der Velden, Northlander has a gracefully balanced bow and stern, eye-catching fashion plates and a low superstructure profile. She offers the comfort, elegance and class of a 38-metre superyacht, while still retaining the intimate details that set a Moonen apart. Naval architect Stolk Marimecs was responsible for the smooth lines below the waterline, which ensure both comfort at sea and low fuel consumption levels. Northlander‘s interior was designed by Art-Line and makes full use of her significant volume. With countless features attractive to owners, guests, captains and crew, the Moonen 124 is ideal for charter and private use. The yard is currently building an even larger yacht for a repeat owner: The first Moonen 133, complete with her own submarine, is scheduled for delivery in 2012.

Outer Reef Delivered Down Under

The first Outer Reef 70 to Australia hit the shores this past week after an uneventful journey from Taiwan and a flawless offload in Port Kembla, Australia. Aroona, the Outer Reef 70 was built to Queensland Commercial Survey by her owners Andrew and Linda Prentice and will be put into pleasure cruising, fishing and diving charters on the Great Barrier Reef. All hands and her owners were up early on delivery day anxiously awaiting the go ahead from the Port Authority to see Aroona in the flesh since her voyage from Taiwan, akin to the likes of Christmas morning. Aroona was blessed with an excellent placement on deck which shielded her from the ravages of the open ocean. M/V Diamantgracht, the carrier vessel dodged a couple of typhoons on her way to the Southern Hemisphere and bucked some very high winds and nasty seas on her final leg of the journey. Considering the weather she encountered along the way, Aroona was remarkably clean and ready to show off her stuff to her new owners. After an uneventful 10 hour journey in 2-3 meter seas from Port Kembla, with pods of whales breaching and numerous dolphins riding the bow wave of Aroona, seemingly guiding her home, she arrived safe and sound at Outer Reefs docks and offices in Sydney. Aroona will be in Outer Reef’s ”Try Before you Buy” charter program, in which potential customers can spend a week or 2 aboard, fishing and diving in some of the most pristine waters in the world. If the perspective client decides to purchase an Outer Reef, their charter fees will be reimbursed. The Outer Reef 70 will go through the final commissioning process which will take about 2 weeks and once completed, she will head North to Cairns, where she will call this port her home base.

Class 1 - Abu Dhabi Grand Prix

Race 1
Team Abu Dhabi's Rashed Al Tayer and John Tomlinson are celebrating a famous victory after winning race 1 of their home Grand Prix, ahead of Victory 2010's Mohammed Al Marri and Giorgio Manuzzi, with Giovanni Carpitella and Class 1 debutant Luca Fendi completing the podium in Negotiator. But there was disappointment for World Champions Arif Al Zafeen and Nadir Bin Hendi in Fazza, who, having led from the first corner saw their race lead disappear on lap 10 after pulling off the course with an electrical problem. For Al Tayer and Tomlinson their first win together was rich reward for pushing the World Champions hard from the start, narrowly failing to overhaul them to lead at the end of lap one. After taking all their long-laps early and trading places with Skydive Dubai and Victory 2010 they moved back into second place on lap seven, taking the lead on lap 10 and going on to take the victory, completing the 12 lap, 53.29Nm course in 31mins 44.59secs at an average speed of 179.19kmh.
Second place for Mohammed Al Marri and Giorgio Manuzzi in their first race together and in the new Victory designed boat on its first competitive outing, was some consolation for the team, after seeing Skydive Dubai's Abdullah Al Mehairbi and Talib Al Sayed retire on lap 7 with engine problems and a race win disappear three laps later. There was also an impressive performance by Class 1 newcomer Luca Fendi, racing alongside fellow-Italian Giovanni Carpitella, making-up four places from their start position to bring Negotiator home in third place.
Relekta's Paul Gaiser and Christian Zaborowski produced their best result of the season, improving on their sixth position in qualifying, to take fourth place to finish ahead of Nicola Giorgi and another Class 1 newcomer, Sandro Sardelli, in GiorgiOffshore. Fazza and Skydive Dubai were classified in seventh and eighth places, with GSG Ceramic Design failing to make the start of the race due to engine problems. Any hopes of a possible pole and race win double for pole-sitters Kolbjorn Selmer and Jorn Tandberg, who briefly led the race from the start flag, ended early on lap 2, retiring with oil pressure problems after all but turning Welmax over on the run to the first corner.

Race 2
Defending World Champions Arif Al Zafeen and Nadir Bin Hendi produced a Championship winning drive to clinch a tenth World title for Dubai's Victory Team, winning a dramatic and incident filled race 2 of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, with two separate incidents involving Victory 2010 and a collision between Skydive Dubai and Negotiator, forcing race officials to immediately red flag the race and call for a restart. Second place went to Welmax's Kolbjorn Selmer and Jorn Tandberg after a titanic battle for podium honours with their Norwegian rivals Relekta, with Paul Gaiser and Christian Zaborowski producing an outstanding performance to take their first podium of the year. The drama unfolded at the first corner when race leader's Mohammed Al Marri and Giorgio Manuzzi spun-out and then rolled Victory 2010, with both pilots emerging unscathed from the upturned hull.
The high-impact coming together between Abdullah Al Meharibi and Talib Al Sayed in Skydive Dubai and Italians Luca Fendi and Giovanii Carpitella in Negotiator, that sidelined both boats, happened almost immediately. From the restart the World Champions were in a class of their own, emerging from the outside start-leg with Fazza out front and comfortably clear of the chasing pack, with Al Zafeen and Bin Hendi going on to take their 19th career wins, completing the shortened 12-lap race in 30mins 26.42secs.
Behind the race leader's a titanic three-way race-long fight for the remaining two podium places was played out with just seconds separating Relekta, Team Abu Dhabi and Welmax, with Welmax coming through to take second place from Relekta on the penultimate-lap. Relekta's first podium of the season was the result of an outstanding drive by Paul Gaiser and Christian Zaborowski who heroically held off their challengers for ten laps before finally conceding second spot. For race 1 winner's, Team Abu Dhabi, it was a case of the podium that got away from them after Rahed Al Tayer and John Tomlinson were given a penalty long-lap for missing a turn buoy at the end of lap six, dropping them to fourth place, with GiorgiOffshore's Sandro Sardelli and Nicola Giorgi completing a solid points scoring weekend finishing fifth, whilst an already frustrating weekend for Guido Cappellini and Giampaolo Montavoci in GSG Ceramic Design ended with them stopping just minutes after the restart. With their third World titles already secured Arif Al Zafeen and Nadir Bin Hendi will now turn their attentions to trying to overhaul Team Abu Dhabi in the battle for the Middle East Championship in the final Grand Prix of the season in Dubai, 9-11 December.

Improve-it = Itama Forty

Itama chose the most important boat show in Italy, and one of the greatest global platforms to unveil a limited edition of its great classic, the Forty. This version is born to celebrate the one hundred delivery of this unique timeless sport cruiser, with the intention to go over the brand history. The Itama Forty was the first of the new Ferretti Group models entrusted to Rome designer Marco Casali. Today the range has five models starting from the Forty up till the 2008 launched Seventy Five flagship. Restyling of Itama Forty no. 100 proposes style features typical of the earlier eighties and nineties Amati models: lacquered interiors, an even cleaner and clearer design, with white as prevalent colour, and the typical nautical style. Moreover, interiors include stylish furnishing items for the bathroom and kitchen from the prestigious JVstore di Jannelli&Volpi, not to mention the important partnership with Brionvega which, together with yacht designer Marco Casali, designed a Cubo Itama Edition radio, produced in a limited number of models that will embellish the new yacht. The rest stays the same for the successful Itama Forty from the very sea worthy deep Vee 22 degrees dead rise hull, a two interior plan choice for a single or twin cabin, 35 knots performance with twin 450hp engines, and the choice for an aft sun lounger or U-shaped settee.
