Sport Yacht Fire in Syracuse Sicily

A sport yacht of about nineteen meters in length went ablaze on the night early morning of 29 May at approximately 00:44 hours at the Marina Yachting marina, located in the natural harbor of Syracuse, in the Eastern Ionian coast of Sicily.  Upon reports of the fire the Syracuse Coast Guard and the Fire Fighting squad dispatched two boats; CP323 and a fire fighting tug boat, with other units coming from the land side to control the fire.  The fire left one of the marina staff needing medical assistance for toxicity, caused by smoke inhaling from trying to turn off the flames.  The sport yacht sank two hours later, with the harbor Coast Guard starting the procedure to protect the area from environmental damage.  The sport yacht was reported as being on charter, with the cause of the fire having unconfirmed reports that it started from exploding batteries.
The nineteen meter sport yacht in this fire looks a Sessa C68, designed by Christian Grande and released in 2010.  The C68 offers interior layouts for three or four double cabins plus a crew cabin for two.  The C68 is powered by twin Volvo 900 or 1000hp engines with IPS pod drives and is able to reach top speeds up to 36 knots, although the first hulls which precede the large IPS drives where powered by twin Volvo 700hp with IPS and or Man 1360hp and line shaft propulsion.  The Sessa C68 was modernized in 2018 with window glazing replacing the circle shaped port holes.  A Sport Fly version presented as a project in 2013 never actually materialized. The C68 was replaced as Sessa's flagship by the slightly larger, and wider Fly 68 Gullwing in 2018.

Sessa have a new class leader in the segment of eleven meters sport cruiser, with the new C3X project.  The C3X characterizes itself for being available in three options; cruiser with three part hard top, open, and the T-top version as pictured above.  A dynamic project made by three different souls, for different type of owners, with a unique, elegant design and a sophisticated style that follow the main brand concept.  The new open version presents a wide scenic windshield and a T-top option with electric-stern bimini, that helps to protect the cockpit area, to better enjoy the day in the shade from the sun.  The design of the cockpit, completely re-designed, presents a modular back sofa that can easily become a sun deck, by folding down the table. The options in the Sessa C3X do not stop as below she is also offered in two layouts, both of which offering two cabins, and distinctive for a galley or no galley choice.  The galley option will reduce the size of the C-shapped dinette which becomes of L-shape with an L-shape galley taking half the space.  The Sessa C3X is powered by twin Volvo 300hp diesel engines with stern-drive propulsion.  A C3X OB outboard version with power up to twin 300hp will also be available.

Project: Sessa Fly 47

In fact, this fourteen meter flybridge cruiser, offers three comfortable and liveable cabins, with two bathrooms having separate shower stalls.  The main deck offers spaciousness in a split level arrangement with an ergonomic galley located to port side and a brightly living area.  The flybridge offers space of more than twenty sqm able to comfortably host eight-ten people. Sessa Sport Yacht Saved from Fire

A Sessa sport yacht of about twenty meters with five persons onboard called coast guard assistance after it had its engine room engulfed in smoke during sea-trials in the gulf of Trieste, in front of Porto Piccolo on the morning of 24 September. The Sessa sport yacht was reported as developing some sort of minor hull damage during the accident.  The coast guard and fire fighting arrived to the accident scene after some minutes of the call on the Italian 1530 emergency number.  At the arrival of the scene all was under control though with the Coast Guard following the yacht up to the entrance to the Porto Piccolo yacht marina as precaution.
The Sessa twenty meter sport yacht in this accident is the C68 model, designed by Christian Grande and released in 2010.  The C68 offers interior layouts for three or four double cabins plus a crew cabin for two.  The C68 is usually powered by twin Volvo 900 or 1000hp engines with IPS pod drives and is able to reach top speeds up to 36 knots, although the first hulls which precede the large IPS drives where powered by twin Volvo 700hp with IPS and or Man 1360hp and line shaft propulsion.  The Sessa C68 was modernized in 2018 with window glazing replacing the circle shaped port holes.  A Sport Fly version presented as a project in 2013 never actually materialized. European Centre Console

Centre console are increasing popularity in Europe, with two brands Fjord and Pardo taken the genre to new successes and creating a print of design for others to follow.  Pardo in particular has been immensely popular with its 43 model selling one hundred units in just a year from launch.

The European Centre Console has in the last ten to fifteen years become different to the American, with this latest starting as medium sized fishing machine, which at the start of the new millennium started to become bigger.  For a start the European CC has the deck reserved for entertainment, and the cabin space below offers more amenities.  Because of the more spacious cabin the European Centre Console has a higher freeboard.  This gives much more cabin space and for example a twelve meter made in EU cc will offer two cabins, or an open cabin sleeping four.  Another difference is that most European centre console are offered with an inboard stern drive propulsion first, with outboards option available.  The USA counter parts are all outboard powered, and very rare if any offer inboards.  Here the difference is performance, with European offers having a speed about forty knots, while the outboard powered USA models have speeds above fifty knots.

Beside Fjord and Pardo, today we are seeing other European makers entering into the Centre Console. Cranchi has just launched its new A46 Tender, as did Cayman with its 400 Walkaround model.  Wally since a couple years part of the Ferretti Group has redesigned all its small sub fifteen meter models as a centre console, and are offered with an outboard choice.  Other new comers in the genre are Solaris, who entering into motor boating with the 55 to a lobster traditional yacht has since then started to offer centre consoles for all its sub seventeen meter models.  The Dutch Vanquish offers something in between to an open yacht and a centre console, and has also gained popularity in the USA.

Azimut has a story of its own, presenting its first centre console the Atlantis Verve 36 in 2009.  The 36 eventually became a 40, with outboard power.  But the 47 launched in 2019 has changed the Verve looks. Outboard powered only, the Francesco Struglia designed Verve flagship has American performance looks, competing more with the likes of Cigarette, Intrepid, and Midnight Express.  Considering how performance centre consoles sell in the USA, the Midnight Express 43 is the best seller in its size for example, the Azimut strategy does make sense, as the Verve 47 has sold 45 units in its first year, and the upcoming 42 has sold ten units on plan.

Beneteau Group who has always been in the centre console genre with the Jeanneau Cap Camarat range, which has expanded not little in the last years and today has the twelve meter 12.5 WA as flagship.

A company which has also entered the genre early on was Fiart, this boat builder from Naples Italy presented the 33 SeaWalker intuitively in 2011, but after an outboard version was released nothing happened for some years.  That is until in 2020 when it launched the 43 Seawalker, with new Seawalker's 39 and 35 coming in 2021.

Sessa has always produced centre consoles, creating change for the genre when it modernized its Key Largo range in the mid first decade of the new millennium.  With this it started to put the first input for the European Centre Console genre, so much is this that today most sub forty feet European outboard centre consoles have all that Sessa and Christian Grande influence. Sessa Key Largo range is still present with the company launching a new KL40 flagship in 2020.

Project: Sessa FX5

Sessa present this project, code named FX5 to what so far seems to be a project dedicated for the Brazilian market, and requested by the South American dealership. Is not this a lost occasion to what really looks a World boat, and a replacement to the long standing Fly 54 updated recently but produced since 2009. Designed by Davide Cipriani design firm and the Lombardy boat builder, the pair with the FX5 have designed a model created to satisfy the specific needs of a growing Brazilian American market, the main characteristics of this new flybridge yacht fitted with Volvo Penta engines are maximum live-ability and comfort, natural light and open spaces created for a convivial lifestyle.  Beauty, attention to detail, style and cutting-edge technology are the key drivers of this project, which should launch in around 2020. Designed specifically with Brazilians in mind, the layout features three cabins plus the crew cabin, sleeping a total of seven. The day zone is dominated by a vast living room with huge windows that offer some striking views. The coatings and finishes are those typically found on Sessa yachts, with their reputation for quality. The excellent distribution of space on board is designed to offer maximum comfort and unparalleled opportunities to socialize: the living room, for example, has enough sofas and armchairs to seat twelve people, while the Flybridge with its carbon fiber T-Top is furnished as an open air living room, offering an L-shaped sofa, a low table, a cabinet, a sink and a grill or, optionally, a cooking top, as well as a solarium area around the helm station. The exterior spaces are both spacious and welcoming, reflecting how Brazilian owners typically use their boats, with various cooking units and classic sun lounging areas allowing the outdoor areas to be exploited to the full throughout the day. The main materials used for the interiors are nubuck, mirrored surfaces, lacquer and a mixture of grey oak wood varieties.  The engines will be two Volvo with IPS pod drive propulsion with a possiblity to fit the FX5 also hybrid engine currently being in the works.

Project: Sanlorenzo SL96 Asymetric

Sanlorenzo present the project for the SL96 Asymmetric with exteriors and layout designed by Bernardo Zuccon, and interiors by Laura Sessa. The design consolidates the direction taken in 2018 with the presentation of the SL102 Asymmetric, which the company calls the world’s first asymmetrical yacht, and showcases Sanlorenzo's ability to work with the concept of space, reinterpreting it from alternative perspectives and exploring different ways to exploit it. SL96 Asymmetric is born of this approach, with a side deck on the starboard side, but not the port, because it has been moved up to the roof of the superstructure in order to free up a large surface area for the interiors and offer more space, light, relaxation and flexibility of use.  The concept of asymmetry springs from a meeting of different minds and creative approaches. Car designer Chris Bangle’s brilliant original idea has been developed by Bernardo Zuccon with the shipyard’s engineers and designers.  Possibly in this kind of design of present modern Italian motor yacht the SL102 Asymmetric is the first of its kind, but certainly this concept has been used in the past by other American and Asian build motor yachts.  Still Sanlorenzo gives it a new spin thanks to a lower bulkhead which increases light and views to the dining area.
