Baglietto and Bio-UV Ink Deal for Bio-Sea Water Treatment

French UV water treatment specialist Bio-Uv Group has signed a major supply deal with luxury yacht builder Baglietto for several Bio-Sea ballast water treatment units for newbuild projects. The agreement, which builds on the success of Baglietto’s Bio-Sea installations over the past two years, will see the BWTS manufacturer roll out ten Bio-Sea L01-0030 low flow systems over the next 12 months. Bio-Uv Group’s scope of supply includes five skid-mounted units for the builder’s 52m T52 line and five pre-assembled modular systems for its DOM 133 line. Each ballast water treatment system, designed to treat flow rates up to 30m3/h, will be delivered with a yacht-standard white finish. The yard’s technicians will carry out the installation work, with the BWTS manufacturer’s Napoli-based certified service partner Tefin Marine Electronics Service Network, which will also be responsible for the commissioning of each system. A key requirement was that each modular Bio-Sea unit was supplied compact and pre-assembled prior to delivery for installation simplicity, explained Maxime Dedeurwaerder, Business Unit Director, Bio-Uv Group’s maritime division. “Our Bio-Sea engineering and design team was able to quickly adapt the system to meet the customer’s technical requirements and the limited space available in the machinery rooms,” he said. Each Bio-Sea L-series is made from high quality marine components, is chlorine/chemical-free, and combines mechanical filtration with the right UV dose disinfection to provide yacht owners with one of the most ecologically safe ballast water management solutions available. Camille Cosson, Manager of Bio-Sea by Bio-Uv Group’s yachts division, said: “For the low flow rates typical of this market, UV technology is widely considered the best way of protecting the sensitive marine ecosystem from non-indigenous invasive species. “For super- and mega-yacht builders like Baglietto, another advantage is that the Bio-Sea L-series is very easy to install, operate and maintain. And with a 1.36m2 footprint it fits quite easily in engine rooms.” Commenting on the work scope, Gianfranco Catanese, Sales and Service partner at Tefin, said: “For yacht builders committed to protecting our seas and oceans with state-of-the-art technology, Bio-Sea is the prefect ballast water treatment solution. This yacht builder has been very pleased with the robustness and small footprint of the units we have previously installed and commissioned and Bio-Uv Group’s lead time perfectly matched Baglietto’s build schedules.” Following the Covid pandemic demand for luxury yachts has seen a resurgence with the market expected to record CAGR of approximately 8% over the 2020-2025 period.

This aesthetic supremacy and undisputed leadership are the result of major investments, fuelled by peerless know-how and craftsmanship.  After outstanding results in the first half, Ferretti Group is gearing up to make some major new product announcements in the second half of the year too.

Ferretti Group Acquires Two Historical Suppliers

Ferretti Group announces the acquisition of the majority stake of two companies that are part of its supply chain: Masello Srl and Fratelli Canalicchio SpA.  Massello Srl, based in Fano, is a company with extensive experience in wooden furniture for yachts and has recently launched an innovative on-board assembly service. Fratelli Canalicchio SpA, based in Narni, is specialized in static exteriors and automatic kinetic systems for yachts.  As of 2021, the combined revenues of the two companies will amount to approximately € 13 million. As a result of the integration with the Ferretti Group, the two companies are expected to generate sales of approximately €30 million by 2025. The two transactions, in line with the Group’s strategy, are aimed at improving overall profitability and gaining even more control over the production and procurement phases.  "We have finalised these two transactions because the acquisition of control of a strategic supplier ensures stability and reliability, improves industrial performance and insourcing of expertise. We are confident that the upstream integration will allow us to express even more quality and optimise costs and time," said Alberto Galassi, CEO of Ferretti Group.

Ferretti Group and Rolls Royce Extend Framework Agreement

Ferretti Group a world-leading luxury yacht manufacturer, is to continue to use Rolls-Royce MTU engines and propulsion systems to power its yachts.  Rolls-Royce's mtu engines and propulsion systems have been deployed by Ferretti Group, especially in its larger models. Their power delivery, reliability and fuel efficiency have earned them a permanent place in the engine rooms of the Group’s yachts.  “Ferretti's renewal of this framework agreement is a tremendous vote of confidence in us and in our mtu products, in a challenging market and a challenging technological environment” said Andreas Schell, CEO of Rolls-Royce Power Systems.  “Working together, we will also meet the climate and environmental challenges that lie ahead,” assured Denise Kurtulus, Vice President of Global Marine at Rolls-Royce's Power Systems division. For the foreseeable future, the internal combustion engine will be the power source of choice for applications – including yachts – which require maximum performance from a compact power pack, and will have an important part to play as we move into a world of sustainable shipping. In 2024, a Ferretti Group yacht is scheduled to be built with an mtu hybrid propulsion system. Moreover, 2023 will see the mtu Series 2000 and 4000 yacht engines being approved to run on synthetic sustainable fuels complying with the EN15940 standard. These include fuels such as HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil) and e-diesel.  "I am extremely happy to announce the renewal of the agreement with Rolls-Royce for mtu products and solutions. The five-year term is crucial, because it offers the guarantee that supplies are always available and prices are sheltered from market swings.” Said Alberto Galassi, CEO of Ferretti Group. "This agreement also further increases the efficiency of our supply chain, with clear benefits for us and our customers."  In future, Rolls-Royce will be supplying more than its MTU Series 2000 and 4000 to the Ferretti Group. From 2024, Ferretti will also be equipping smaller yachts with complete MTU NautiQ bridge systems developed together with bridge specialist Team Italia, with whom Rolls-Royce has agreed a close partnership.

Maritimo Migration Heads to Newport, Rhode Island

Newport is the traditional center of yachting in America, a city steeped in the sea both past and present, where majestic J-boats still duel offshore in a replay of the America’s Cup—a dozen epic battles took place here from 1930 to 1983—and yacht yards marinas line the harbor offering unequaled views and a variety of services in a thriving seaport. This vibrant city shares its history as a summer playground for the well-to-do with Gilded-Age mansions, a waterfront lined with quaint lanes, and an energized community built around a population of locals, summer residents, and visitors that are all seeking a taste of the yachting life.  The Maritimo Migration kicked off on Friday, September 23, as Maritimos arrived at the Newport Yachting Center. After guests registered, several gathered for cocktails trading cruising stories, adventures and comparing their Maritimos.  Later the group paid a visit to Sardella’s, an Italian restaurant featuring hearty, traditional dishes and a convivial atmosphere, where the group shared a light-hearted discussion of how each of them settled on the names of their boats.  On Saturday morning, the group gathered for a breakfast meeting with Northrop and Operations Director Phil Candler, who came from Australia to join the trip. The two shared details and insights into the company’s plans for the future, including design ideas, upcoming models, and production details.  Maritimo prides itself listening to its owners and analyzing their design input. After all, the thinking goes, who knows better how a yacht really serves its purpose than a dedicated cruiser who sees her through real-world conditions.   After the breakfast meeting, the group descended upon Newport, splitting up to explore. Some enjoyed a visit to the International Tennis Hall of Fame, where the first U.S. Open was contested. Others ventured into the downtown area including Bannister’s and Bowen’s Wharves, having a taste of the town, while other took advantage of the hop-on hop-off trolley to delve into the some of the sights along Bellevue Avenue, including the Newport Mansions built by Vanderbilts, Morgans, Astors, and other noteworthy families of the Gilded Age.  Later the group reconvened at the Newport Yachting Center for docktails and a yacht hop where guests could look in on other Maritimo models and see the differences in the designs. Recent models such as the M50 and M58 were located alongside examples of the S55, M51, and M64, giving everyone a good taste of these cruising yachts. The group then gathered at 22 Bowen’s for the final dinner, with stories shared that offered still more insight into the cruising experiences afforded by owning a capable luxury motoryacht.

Viking Demands NOAA to Stop New Rule

A rushed proposed rule to implement 10-knot speed restrictions for boats larger than 35 feet from Massachusetts to Florida could devastate the entire marine industry and cripple America’s outdoor economy.  The National Marine Fisheries Service, an agency within the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), is proposing amendments to the North Atlantic Right Whale Vessel Strike Reduction Rule to reduce the likelihood of vessel strikes. The federal rule would broaden the current 10-knot speed limit to include boats 35 feet and larger (down from 65 feet); expand the zones from discrete calving areas to virtually the entire East Coast as far out as 100 nautical miles; and extend the go-slow mandate for up to seven months a year.  "As written, it would be the most consequential maritime regulation that we have ever seen imposed on the recreational boating and fishing sector,” says John DePersenaire, Director of Government Affairs and Sustainability for Viking Yachts. “The proposal will affect not only boat owners but marinas, tackle shops, charter boat operators – all maritime-related businesses on the Atlantic Coast.”  “This would be a devastating regulatory mandate,” says Viking President and CEO Pat Healey. “Right whale vessel strikes have just not been an issue for our industry. This is a classic example of government overreach.” The proposed rule was published August 1, 2022, without any engagement with the recreational boating and fishing community. After Viking and a coalition of fishing and boating organizations voiced their concerns, NOAA extended the public comment period to October 31.  “We really need to turn up the volume and make sure our voices are heard,” says Pat. “Everyone needs to rally – boat owners, yacht clubs, marinas, fishing clubs, charter boat associations. This is a huge deal, and we don’t have much time.”

Viking Triple Play

To keep up with the demand of building boats, Viking’s Metal Shop has added a third computer numerical control (CNC) machine which will create hundreds of parts. “The machine will be a huge help with the volume of work flowing through this department,” said Metal Shop Supervisor Joe Martorana. This new CNC is similar to the existing machines but has newer technology. Training (above) involved the Haas team providing two days of hands-on learning and program creation through Autodesk’s Fusion 360. By using this software the Metal Shop can interact directly with Viking’s 3D engineering models.  Four team members are trained to work with the machine and eventually one will be dedicated to it. Evan Bahrle, Supervisor of the Metal Shop, says, “We aim to train our employees across many machines, so they are well-rounded and able to transfer their knowledge and abilities to other team members, making this a stronger department.”

The Catch 23 team also released a pair of blue marlin and six white marlin (and weighed a trio of tuna) for 2nd Place Overall Points.  On the final day of the event, rumor spread that a big white was headed to the weigh station. Michael Pintozzi wheeled his Viking 54 Random Chaos in and put up a white for Tom Jarvis. The fish weighed 66 pounds, good enough for 3rd Place.  Third Place Most Points White Marlin was captured by the Viking 80. Led by captain Sean Dooley, the team released 10 white marlin. The Viking 80 also took 1st Place Billfish Points Cape May.  The blue marlin category was hotly contested all week, but Captain James Putzig backed the Viking 68 Lucky 7, owned by Robert Boyce, to the scale. Robert Boyce Jr. battled the 119.8” fish that weighed 619 pounds and claimed 2nd Place. Robert Jr. also released a blue clinching the 2nd Place Most Blue Marlin Points title. Lucky 7 also claimed 2nd Place Billfish Points Cape May, followed by the Viking 52 Outrage.  Most Points Blue Marlin was awarded to Joe Bernert’s Viking 72 Quick Raise. Pete Spera released a pair of blues, while Neal Dixon released one. Anthony Pennella was at the wheel.  Tuna was another competitive category with no fewer than 86 weighed during the week. Art Boykin’s Viking 48 Lucky Duck took the Heaviest Tuna with a big eye of 210 pounds caught by John Thornton on Day 4.  Captain Evan Millas put Bob Hugin aboard his Viking 62 The Right Place into 2nd and 3rd Place after weighing a pair of big eye tuna at 193 and 152 pounds caught by Bob and Deane Lambros. This is the 2nd consecutive year a Viking would win two places in the Heaviest Tuna Division. Last year Chip Caruso’s Viking 70 Pipe Dreamer dominated the category with a pair of big eyes weighing 235 and 227 pounds to take 1st and 2nd Place.  The Right Place also captured 2nd Place Most Tuna Points.  With an hour left in the tournament, Mike Penza weighed a 46-pound wahoo to take 3rd Place in that category. Mike was fishing his just-delivered Viking 64 Oil Slick with Captain Chris Dudzek at the helm.  Ellen Gross, fishing Joseph Valentine’s Viking 61 Valentine, weighed the Heaviest Dolphin at 43 pounds. Travis Scott was behind the wheel.  Captain Spencer Bradley took Billy Wrede’s Viking 62 Lovin’ Life to the scales. Brett Broph weighed the 2nd Place Dolphin at 39 pounds.  Although not a category in the MidAtlantic, George Robinson and his team on the Viking 64 Polarizer achieved a Grand Slam. That is, they released a blue marlin, white marlin and sailfish in one day. This is quite an accomplishment as Grand Slams are very rare in the Northeast. Congrats to George, Captain Bill Davis and the crew.

Project: Pardo GT75

Pardo present the project for the GT75, a new flagship of 22 meters in length.  Designed as all Pardo's by Zuccheri with Nauta taking care of interior, the GT75 expands Pardo size by fifteen feet from the current E60 flagship, and is the second GT model following the 52 launched in 2022.  The GT line introduced by Pardo in 2021 with the GT52 is an interesting mix of walk around features to those of a sport yacht.  In the GT75 choice is something one has to do after signing the dotted lines, with the most important one revolving around two stern layouts; for a classic sun-pad-tender-garage, or an open beach club as pictured above.  In both cases the opening side bulwarks are featured, but you do get three steps up from the the bathing platform in the tender-garage version.  Another difference in between the tender-garage and beach versions is the stern access to the master stateroom only featured on the later, with the former having a tad larger owners room.  In the Pardo GT 75 choice also exist in the interior with a galley up or down layout, and the possibility to have a two, three, or four cabins sleeping up to ten guests.  Currently the plans on the website are only showing the two cabins; master to midships and VIP forward version, but I do imagine the other cabins to replace the lower deck saloons to port and starboard.  The Pardo GT75 is to be standard powered by triple Volvo 701hp with options going up to 1000hp with IPS pod propulsion.

Improve-it = Mimi Libeccio 11 wa

For the Genoa Boat Show 2022 and model year 2023 Mimi presents an improved version of its Libeccio 11 wa for Walkaround.  Presented in 2020 as an innovative traditional Gozzo cruiser to a design by Valerio Rivellini the Libeccio 11 wa model year 2023 will feature a new stern enhancing the space in this area as previously unseen in traditional gozzo cruiser.  This redesign of the aft sun-pad size, makes the stern area more open, rethinking a usually enclosed area in these type of traditional cruiser, and turning into a min beach area.  For the remaining the Mimi Libeccio 11 wa does not change with its lower cabin offering two cabins, a galley and a bathroom.  The same is for the exterior with the stern garage under the sun-pad with the space for a tender and water toys and a hard top that make the Libeccio 11 wa one of the most contemporary traditional gozzo cruisers in its size.  The Libeccio 11 wa is powered by twin Yanmar 250hp with line shaft propulsion which give a top speeds up to thirty knots.

Project: Dominator Ilumen Performance P66

Dominator returns where it started in building planning flybridge motor yachts and presents the project for the Ilumen Performance P66.  Dominator was founded in 1999 on the remains of the original Mochi-Craft yard founded in 1960, and becoming a symbol of flybridge cruisers in eighties.  This new Ilumen Performance P66 looks to based on the Dominator 620, which is one of the Austrian owned Italian builder best sellers and based on the Mochi 19 Sonic designed by Nuvolari Lenard.  Dominator is saying P66 hull one will have a trendy dark grey metallic paint with seductive orange design elements complementing the exterior furniture.  This theme continues inside by pairing shades of grey in different textures with modern orange tones to achieve an impression of timeless chic. Exquisite grey marbles with artistic orange veins transform the bar into the center of attention in the salon while the grey oak gives a touch of classic yet contemporary look and feel.  Dominator advises that the Ilumen Performance is a new range of motor yachts blending the best of both worlds with futuristic features like full carbon hard-top, full length hull windows for light filled interior spaces, and a flybridge that can convert into a private sunbathing area, all with planning hull advantages of speed and smooth performance in any kind of sea.  Based on this I think we will see some of the previous Dominator flybridge models redesigned, rebadged, and returned into production as is the case with 620-P66.

Project: Centouno Navi 28-meter Forza

Centouno Navi is a new super sport yacht builder founded in 2022 by designer Manuela Lucchesi and naval architect Marco Arnaboldi founder and former owner of AB Yachts, who are here giving details for the first project the 28-meter Forza. A custom build to order yacht, Forza is also a highly technological advanced super sport yacht with clean lines, setting new standards from its eco-friendly construction to high performance naval architecture. But in a 28-meter high-tech and speed is half-a-glass and the Forza also offers a standard four double cabins lower deck layout, with two crew cabins sleeping four forward.  Triple Man 2000hp coupled to MJP jet drives power the Forza up to sixty knots of top speed, and a cruise of fifty knots with a promised 70% efficiency to comparable super sport yachts of similar size is estimated to give a five hundred nautical mile range.  Other innovative details of the Forza will be the windshield, which opens forward for easy access to the fore-deck and better air-circulation inside when at anchor.  The Forza also features extendable side bulk-heads aft which expand the bathing beach platform when at anchor, while an additional private sun-deck is also located on top of the hard-top.  According to Centouno Navi website the Forza is available from 27 to thirty meters, with a project for a bigger 40 m Eterea also being announced.

New Launch: Heesen 80m YN 19480

In late 2021 Heesen launched YN 19480, Project Cosmos at the shipyard in Oss, its new eighty meter custom build flagship which is to be christened Galactica. At 80 metres, with a gross tonnage of 1,700GT and a top speed of almost 30 knots, she is the biggest and fastest all-aluminium yacht ever built. The challenges involved in creating such a large and complex yacht are extreme, but made a perfect fit with Heesen’s history and expertise. Precision aluminium construction, high performance and the finest Dutch craftsmanship are steeped into the DNA of this shipyard. Cosmos is the ultimate expression of Heesen’s ability to build daring projects that stretch the imagination of its engineers and crafts people. Thanks to the dedication of the Heesen teams and the shipyard’s loyal subcontractors, who all worked tirelessly through the pandemic, the yacht was launched on schedule in perfect Dutch style. What makes Project Cosmos so impressive is its immense size combined with a remarkable top speed of almost 30 knots. This is achieved thanks to the lightweight and low-drag hull design, honed to perfection by Heesen’s naval architects on an iteration of the Fast Displacement Hull Form devised by van Oossanen, and assembled, millimetre-perfect, by Heesen’s welders. Ensuring sufficient longitudinal strength was one of the biggest technological challenges facing Heesen’s engineering team, who designed and patented the Backbone,  an intricate full-length structural reinforcement system. Power comes from traditional, if highly refined, diesel propulsion of four MTU 4830hp  engines, two gearboxes, variable-pitch propellers and ultra-innovative Promas rudders. Cosmos’s elegant exterior comes from the renowned British studio of Winch Design. Clean lines, a sporty silhouette and the extensive use of glass create a timeless, dynamic profile, which will look as good in twenty years as it does today at launch. Sinot is responsible for the light and soothing interior design that makes guests feel at home from the moment they step aboard. While the overall palette is neutral, splashes of a range of blue hues are infused into the design throughout. The piece de résistance is undoubtedly the beach club, with its side and stern platforms. The backlit onyx bar with centrally positioned seating is the focal point of this ample and airy space close to the water. With the size, weight and performance of Project Cosmos so intimately connected, Sinot collaborated closely with Heesen’s in-house engineers to ensure that their stringent weight calculations were always met. Following her launch, Project Cosmos remained at Heesen for commissioning before undergoing intense sea trials in the North Sea commencing in February. She was delivered to her owners in Spring 2022 but no pictures have appeared as yet of the new Heesen eight meter flagship in navigation.
