Belize Celebrates Australian Launch

Belize Motoryachts, the new Australian owned-and-designed luxury marque, has just celebrated this month the much-anticipated arrival of its limited edition, semi custom Belize 52 with two intimate launch events in Queensland and New South Wales. Both events – the first held at a private home on the Sovereign Islands in Queensland, the second at the newly opened offices of dealer LDM (LuxuryDesign Motoryachts) at The Spit in Mosman, Sydney – were Caribbean themed, reflecting the origins of the Central American Belize brand name. While the weather unfortunately overplayed its hand, conjuring up a Caribbean-like tempest on Sovereign Island, the launches were well patronized by an exclusive gathering of boat owners and boating aficionados, including the proud new owners of two Belize 52s, who claimed the boat far exceeding of expectations. First unveiled at this year’s Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show in May, the Belize 52 is the realization of a dream started by respected Australian boat builder, Wes Moxey and partner Lee Dillon, who in 2010 embraced their combined total of 60 years experience in luxury boating to create a flawless, elegant 52 feet cruiser that delivers on quality, finish, design, performance and internal volume. Constructed via artisanal means by the Taiwanese ISO certified ship-builder, Kha Shing, the limited edition Belize 52 (a total of nine boats are scheduled to be built by the end of 2012) comes in two variations: a single-level, sports yacht style Hardtop, and split-level open Day Bridge. Though inspired by the old world luxury details and timeless style of the automotive and boating industries of the 1920s and 1930s, the Belize 52 is thoroughly modern in performance: twin Cummins 600hp diesel engines deliver a speed of 30 knots, with a cruising range of approximately400nm. The Belize 52 is carving out a new niche for itself and has been received this month with rave reviews by experienced boating media and existing owners alike. The response has been “overwhelming”, according to Belize Motoryachts managing partner, Wes Moxey. Moxey and Dillon are quickly discovering the Belize 52 is appealing to a different segment of the luxury boating market enthusiasts that have owned various other boats from production to traditional. Even sailboat owners that now want to move into power boating for all of its convenience, but want something different and bespoke to reflect their individual tastes, as well as the latest modern technology have expressed an interest. Belize Motoryachts are currently in the midst of finalizing two more private sales of the 52, and there is considerable interest from dealers in Europe and the United States.

Riviera Biggest Hull Release

Riviera, Australia’s largest and most awarded luxury boat builder has recorded its biggest hull release this month and called in two high capacity cranes to lift the new 75 Enclosed Flybridge hull from the mold to allow it to move into the next stage of production, Fit Out One. Riviera’s 75 Flybridge project manager Paul Wrench said the boat hulls were usually lifted from the mold using Riviera’s onsite overhead gantry cranes but because of the height restrictions within the building, the 75 was lifted out of the mold using a 30 tonne and 50 tonne crane. Paul said it was great to see the finished hull after months of planning and mold modifications which began in August. The interior on this boat is teak as opposed to the popular cherry and the owner has had custom lounges made for the saloon. Paul said the New Zealand owners had made several trips to Riviera’s state-of-the-art Coomera facility and were very impressed with the build progress. Paul began his career in the marine industry 34 years ago as a Shipwright for McConaghy Boats in Sydney where he spent 17 years building America’s Cup yachts. Paul is now Riviera’s large boat project manager having worked on the six 70 Flybridges previously built and now the company’s new flagship model, the 75 Flybridge.

Riviera Event for Family and Friends

As the sun set on the final day of the annual R Marine Queensland Great Sandy Straits Experience, some 45 Riviera owners enjoyed tapas and drinks under the Pandanus tree at King Fisher Bay, Fraser Island. In its 5th year the Great Sandy Straits Experience has become a highlight on R Marine Queensland’s calendar of events. A fleet of 11 Rivieras ranging in size from 36 to 51 feet set off from Sovereign Islands on the Gold Coast and embarked on a 408 nautical mile round trip north to Great Sandy Straits and back again. R Marine Queensland dealer principal Randall Jones said every year they chose a marine theme to give them safe travel and this year it was the crab. This was the first R Marine Experience for Margaret and Barry Hill who purchased a 3600 Sport Yacht earlier this year. Barry who was an avid yachty since the early 60s said the Great Sandy Straits journey was a whole new experience for him. Riviera 47 Flybridge owners Dale and Kathy Cash have been on several R Marine Queensland Experiences. Randall said the five night experience included a mixture of planned activities and leisure time such as lunch at Tangalooma on day one followed by dinner at Mooloolaba where they anchored for the first night. The next day they left Mooloolaba bound for Tin Can Bay where they crossed the Wide Bay Bar with the assistance of the Coastguard. Windy Shortlisted for European Powerboat of the Year

Scandinavian boat builder Windy Boats has been shortlisted for a ‘2011 European Powerboat of the Year Award’ for the Windy 31 Zonda, a stunning fast weekender which harks back to the glory days of the deep-vee hull. The winner will be announced in January at the Düsseldorf International Boat Show in January 2012. Launched to rave reviews last Spring, the Zonda is described by Windy CEO Knut Heiberg-Andersen as sleek, functional and seductive – a low profile weekender concept with no hard-top, no radar arch, just a great hull and plenty of horsepower. Exhilarating and uncompromising performance lie at the heart of the Zonda’s appeal. Designed by renowned naval architect Hans Jorgen Johnsen, the hull is capable of sustained highspeed cruising, combining fearsome wave-tackling abilities with superb handling and control. One leading UK yachting title has described it as the best hull tested. Focused on a deep, secure cockpit and performance-oriented helm position, the Zonda’s elegant accommodation is designed around the needs of an overnighting couple. The interior vision was conceived by acclaimed yacht and private jet interior designers, Eidsgaard Design (EDL), and the quality in the construction and fittings is self evident, from the luxurious finish in the double berth cabin and galley area to the folding cockpit canopy which is designed to be as effortless as possible to put up, and unobtrusive when stowed.  Windy has a strong track record in the prestigious European Powerboat of the Year Awards. In 2009 its 44 Chinook hard-top sports cruiser was named ‘European Powerboat of the Year’ in the under 50ft category, while in 2006 the Windy 32 Grand Tornado took top honours in the under 40ft category.

This yacht also has an important innovation. Besides developing a number of personalised technical features, Ferretti Group Advanced Yacht Technology naval research and design centre, took this opportunity to make changes to the functionality of the bow garage and swim platform of the 115 Athena series. New Model: Fairline 50 Targa Gran Turismo

Launched earlier this year at the 2011 London show, the Fairline 50 Targa Gran Turismo replaces the 52 model of the same range after an important eight years production run.  The 50 Targa Gran Turismo take a lot of design stints from the previous new launched 58, a model which represents a different way of presenting the large sport series from Fairline.  This new thinking comes from larger sun roofs, full opening patio doors, and bigger glassed surfaces on both the main and lower deck.  Other new design instincts comes from the fact that both the latest large Targa's, this 50 and the 58 offer a living with galley on the main deck, and lower plan fully dedicated to the cabins.  The 50 Targa Gran Turismo also stays away in following recent trends and offers the owners stateroom to fore.   But don't be written off as this has been made in way to compete with a midships cabin layout. Power is a three engine choices from Volvo and Cats from 575 up to 710hp which take speeds up to 33 knots with the larger option.  Design of hull and engineering for the 50 Targa Gran Turismo is again trusted to long time since the eighties Fairline colloborator Bernard Olesinski who again as for the completely new 41 Squadron goes for a flat medium Vee aft of only twelve degrees.

New Model: Beneteau 49 Flyer Gran Turismo Fly

A new model the Beneteau 49 Flyer Gran Turismo Fly which comes from the rethinking of the 47 Monte Carlo Fly.  The main differences here come from the addition of an extended up and down moving bathing platform and new larger view windows serving the cabins below.  Accommodation below keeps the standard setting of  two cabins, with the owners room located to midships and being full beam.  In between the cabins is an L-shaped galley, and C-shaped saloon settee. The old 47 Monte Carlo used to have a choice for a third cabin bunk in replacement of the saloon, but this so far is not shown in the plans of the 49.  The 49 Flyer Gran Turismo Fly also features a tender garage.  Power is from twin Volvo 435hp with IPS pod drives.

Project: Bruno Abbate B41 Primatist Aerotop Pininfarina

Spy photo of a prototype or rendering?  I will let your imagination decide this.  But the Bruno Abbate B41 Primatist Aerotop Pininfarina is the replacement model to one of the recent best sellers of the Como boat builder the G41 Aerotop Evolution in production from 2002 till the early part of this year 2011.  The B41 Primatist Aerotop Prininfarina is again a design of the famous Italian firm, renowned for legendary automobiles and also some yachts.  With this project Bruno Abbate now unites all its model under the Pininfarina design a collaboration which started with the current flagship G70, and continued with the G46, G53, and recently presented B62.  Power will be a three engine choice from Volvo starting at 330 up to 400hp all stern drive propulsion.  A top speed of 40 knots is estimated with the large twin 400hp option.

New Model: Broom 370

Its been an important 2011 year for Broom, not only because this British builder has fully restarted production, but because it showed that there is an important project coming up which says good things for the years to come.  The new Broom 370 steals hull shape and some layout similarities with the replacing 365, but the story with this old model ends there.  Helped by designer Graham Warren the new 370 shows panache in both interiors and exterior with innovative modern use of space, and quality luxury finishing which can challenge the best of them.  Tricks and some clever touches are also used to increase natural light inside; read sunroof glass, aft view window for the owners aft cabin room, and a comfortable chaise lounge inside.  As is usual to Broom the 370 offers acres of space especially if you compare this design to more Mediterranean orientated aft cockpit designs, and the two large cabins one aft for the owner, and a guest to fore are just testimony to this.  To fore is also a choice from a french style berth resting to starboard to a Vee shape twin layout.  Power is from twin 330hp Volvo engines which give a top speed of 30 knots.  For the more inland owner there is also a choice of more economic to run and keep single 370hp Volvo, and a hybrid electric diesel option is also available.

New Model: Ferretti Custom Line 124

One of the most waited Ferretti Custom Line model is the new flagship 124.  Hull one for this model was launched in 2010, but photos where hard to come by as this was apparently owned by a known important Italian businessman.  The Custom Line 124 replaces the 128 as the Super Yacht Ferretti line flagship.  Zuccon presented innovative lines, which look sleek, and sports even though the Custom Line 124 features three decks here.  The interior offers a five guest cabins plan with the owners stateroom located on the main deck.  Power is from standard twin MTU 3184hp which give a 25 knots max, add 400hp plus to each unit and you increase this by 2 knots.  A 22 knots cruise gives you about 400 nautical miles range, but if you slow to an economic 12 nautical miles per hour you get 1250 nautical miles and over twenty thousand liters of diesel fuel to fill.

Project: Galeon 380 Fly

Galeon 380 Fly is a third generation flybridge motor cruiser coming from this famous Polish builder, who in the last years has taken the yachting world by storm thanks to the innovation and quality of its models.  The 380 Fly is a successor to the tried and tested 390 Fly.  The lines share similarities to the just launched four feet bigger 420 Fly and the new 780 Crystal flagship and yet it still is fresh and recognizable.  The sporty and dynamic silhouette quickly catches the eye with its hull-length windows, aggressive lines and welcoming flybridge. Major focus was put on making the interior as bright and specious as possible. The arched stainless steel doors slide to the side reveal a cozy salon flushed with natural light thanks to the drop down windows on both sides and a slightly tilted windshield made from a single sheet of glass for perfect visibility. Outside the transformable settee with adjustable lumbar support folds out to an aft facing sundeck and has built in laminate doors to neatly close off the cockpit. The bow sundeck has conveniently placed cup holders and regulated headrest so it can be put in the upright position to create back support and become settee. Wide side decks and generously placed hand railings are great for crew while mooring and at rough sea. Another good thinking especially for Northern European buyers is the foldable radar arch and mast, which allows for an easier passage under bridges and other obstacles.  The main deck will feature a comfortable dinette, helmsman station and a galley that can be moved down below in the two cabin version. Numerous interior design options with a choice of high quality natural woods allow to fully customize the yacht to suit all needs. Below deck is a choice of a three or two cabins versions, plus a separated shower cabin and head. The bow owners cabin is well lit thanks to the skylight with an integrated hatch and has numerous compartments for storage.  Shaft and stern drives with joystick propulsion are available along with numerous diesel engine options.

Project: Marquis 690 Fly Bridge

Marquis presents the project for a new 690 Fly Bridge model.  So far the 690 Fly Bridge model seems an update of the current 690 with new circle shape port holes, and different more aggressive big view windows serving the owner full beam stateroom.  Another different design seems also the hard covering the flybridge.  The new tweaks of the 690 should make it more online and similar looking to the current flagship of the Marquis line the 720. If this model will offer a different layout below to the current three stateroom plan, and a different engine power propulsion package we still don't know.

New Model: Apreamare 45 Smeraldo

Apreamare presented the 45 Smeraldo at the Cannes show the past September.  The 45 Smeraldo is a return to a name used by Apreamare in the nineties, and is a design of architect Spadolini for exterior lines plus interior, and Umberto Tagliavini for hull shape.  Measuring 45 feet overall the new Smeraldo keeps the traditional Italian Gozzo fishing boat lines, but gives a further touch of modernity compared to the other current Apreamare models, although surprisingly there is no in fashion big view windows in the lower deck cabin area.  The latest Apreamare traditional 48, and 64 models have in fact featured these to midships. The interior lower deck offers a two cabins plan with owners suite to fore.  A crew cabin is located to port side behind the well sized galley.  Power is from twin Volvo 370 or optional 435hp engines with IPS pods propulsion.  The 45 Smeraldo is the second Aprea which goes the pod drives propulsion route following the use of these by the 66 Maestro launched the past Spring.

Project: Lazzara LMY64

Lazzara presents the project of the LMY64.  This new project will share hull with another model currently in the works for this US builder the LSX64, with a different super structure which adds a flybridge, and new very spacious four stateroom lower deck layout.  This last at this size being one of the greatest attributes of this upcoming Lazzara model.  The four stateroom plan also offers three very spacious cabins; full beam midships owner stateroom, two VIP suites, and a fourth cabin with twin L-shaped bunk berth.  This last being a bit sacrificed but four cabins are very rare indeed in this size. Power for the LMY64, will be from twin Volvo 900hp with pod being the chosen propulsion.  Worth to note that pods has powered nearly all new recent Lazzara of the last years, which currently has four new model projects, three of which will be powered by the innovative efficient drive systems.

New Model: Italcraft 38 Sarima S3

Italcraft a legendary name to what concerns technical aspects of boat design, especially for the hull shapes it pioneered, presents a new important model the 38 Sarima S3.  The new Italcraft Sarima S3 is based on the hull lines of the 38 Sarima launched in 1998, but features a total update in all the layout; both outside in the cockpit, and inside for the cabin area.  Down side to this is only stern drive propulsion, with the replaced model used to have also shafts, IPS pods, and surface drive as other choices. The signal S3 is also fully deserved here, as this is the third generation Sarima, which follows on the success of the first wood built 25 feet series delivered in seven hundred units in the nineteen sixties and seventies, and today being a collectors item.  The difference from the second generation in the new S3 is definitely more space everywhere, and that is saying something considering that the 1998 design was spacious, and that was already impressive being it was born from a hull of military patrol use derivation.  That is unlike most of today designs the Sarima is built around the sea, and not a spacious cabin.  The cockpit layout of the new S3 is a flush deck, fully open plan, with an L-shaped settee, galley,  fore sun pad to port side, and helm station to starboard.  Below is a spacious affair with a layout offering two cabins; shower head, L-shaped settee, galley, and second guest shower cubicle.  The guest mid-ships cabin has also the option of being offered in an optional three sleeping berths configuration.  Power choice is for Volvo engines; from twin 220 up 300hp which give speeds up to a max of 40 knots with the bigger option.

Project: MJM 36z Express

Presenting its 36z model in its Downeast version, MJM now presents the more sports looking Express project.  Similar down East hull lines capture this new 36z Express which feature more aggressive looks up top, mostly coming in the design of the hard top and the windshield protecting the helm and the cockpit from the elements.  The rest is all coming from MJM hull with a good fuel efficient shape below waterline, and a high technology low weight construction.  The internal layout has the same options of Vee shaped berth to fore, or double berth plus separate head, and galley.  Power choices are for twin Volvo stern drives with standard being 170hp, and 220 or 300hp units offered as option.

New Model: Azimut 40 Flybridge

Launched in early Summer 2011, and presented officially in Cannes the Azimut 40 Flybridge is a further evolution of the 38 model launched in 2009.  The Azimut 40 is the baby entry level of the vast range of this very famous Italian boat builder.  The major changes in the 40 which differentiate it from the 38 model happen at the stern with the hydraulic telescopic gangway now moved to starboard side instead of central this offering larger tender stowage space, the settee aft being now moved central and not divided, and a larger high low bathing platform. In the project press release of August Azimut also promised a sun roof glass opening from the flybridge to the saloon, but so far I cannot spot this feature. The interior of the 40 remains the same well used layout of the 38 offering unseen space and a good balance of comfort in a two cabins head layout.  The owners suite is to fore, and the second guest cabin having two large view windows is located to starboard midships.  Power is from twin Cummins 355hp which give a top speed of 31 knots, and a cruise of 26.

Grand Banks Yachts marked the opening of the world's biggest boat show with an announcement of the newest and biggest model in its iconic Heritage Series lineup, the  54 Heritage EU, a "Europa-style" trawler motoryacht with a powerful blend of luxury, seaworthiness and fine craftsmanship.  This new project will launch in spring of 2012. Like other "new-generation" Heritage models, the 54EU features a modified-V hull designed to achieve better performance at higher speeds, while still delivering solid fuel economy, stable cruising comfort and longer range at displacement speeds.  An expansive main deck provides a very generous amount of living and entertaining space that flows smoothly on one level from its helm back through the galley, dining area and salon, then out to a large cockpit that extends the living area outdoors with its built-in settee and teak dining table.  Up top, an extended flybridge deck boasts plenty of room for family enjoyment, with two settees facing a teak dining table, an optional sun pad with adjustable reclining backs, and plenty of built-in storage with options for a wet bar, ice maker and BBQ. A standard Stidd helm seat sits on the center line before a large flybridge helm console, with a second optional Stidd to starboard. Space aft can hold a four meter tender and the standard davit. A flybridge hardtop is optional.  Down below, the standard lower-deck layout features three staterooms, all generously sized for a 54-foot vessel. The forward VIP cabin with queen-size berth has en-suite access to a head with shower, while a second guest cabin sits to port. The large master stateroom sits amidships with a queen-size berth, abundant closet and drawer storage, and a head with twin sinks and separate shower.  Even more storage plus room for a separate washer, dryer and other optional features can be found in the utility room that sits just aft of the master cabin and forward of the well-designed engine room. This space can, at the owner's option, also be configured as quarters for a crew of two.  On the main deck, dual settees in the salon provide ample seating for lounging or viewing the standard LED television. A well-equipped galley sits comfortably behind the helm and across from an efficient L-shaped dinette, well situated for dining together even when underway.  New for the Heritage Series, the 54EU foredeck features built-in seating around a teak cocktail table, adding yet another gathering space or comfortable hideaway for taking in the sun and air.  The new 54EU is built on the same Grand Banks designed hull as the 53 Aleutian RP, which has garnered worldwide acclaim for its dry and stable handling in rough seas and across a wide range of speeds. Standard twin Cummins 600hp diesel engines can power the 54 Heritage EU to a top speed of over 18 knots, or can cruise at a sedate 8 knots for well over 1100 nautical miles on a single tank of fuel.

New Model: Absolute 40 Fly

Absolute presents the 40 Fly, the entry level model of its flybridge line which was launched last year with the 50 and 43, and so far already features four models.  The Absolute 40 Fly is a very interesting flybridge cruiser featuring a very airy main deck with opening side door, fully open aft patio doors joining the interior saloon to the aft cockpit, and a spacious flybridge which can make bigger boats jealous.  The flybridge motor cruiser also has an up and down hydraulic bathing platform with quite a wide space for a tender.  A note here that there is very few flybridge boats which offer it in this size.  The new Galeon 400 and Azimut 40 come to mind. Below is space for a two cabins both with en-suite, and a galley.  The owners room is to fore, with large view windows to both sides. Power for the Absolute 40 Fly is twin Volvo from 300 up to 370hp in IPS or stern drive propulsion.  For a flybridge I suggest IPS all the way, because if the joystick goes bust it surely would be easier to manoeuvre then with stern drive.
