Chris-Craft Lays off 40 Workers

Chris-Craft has laid off 40 employees in its plant in Sarasota, Florida. The layoffs come on top of the furlough of 55 other workers in its North Carolina facility, which will temporarily stop building boats. There are about 195 workers still at the local plant, according to the Sarasota Herald Tribune. Chris-Craft spokeswoman Meghan Stout told the paper that dealer orders for 2009 are down for the first time since Stellican Ltd. acquired Chris-Craft in 2000 from Genmar. Because of a slowdown in sales, Chris-Craft transferred production of its Catalina line of center console boats back to Florida from North Carolina. Stout said Chris-Craft will continue to build the Catalina line, but will focus on its higher-end products. Chris-Craft also intends to launch new models. Stout said that a staff of about 40 remains in North Carolina to perform product testing and engineering.

Dalla Pieta 2008 Campaign

“My boat is my island. It's a home, a refuge, a castle... where you are like the owner of the entire world cause that is the entire world. Who owns an island has already entered paradise." The creative though based on which the entire Dalla Pietà Yachts communication has originated has remained unaltered, on the other hand the image has evolved in order to adapt itself to a new target. From black and white to colour, from the woman who owned a boat which was like her island, to the woman who owns an island boat. Notice the island-boat: from a metaphor on the concept of freedom to an icon of new luxury. A luxury that has become more aggressive in a market which has given the cards a shuffle and has substituted the pleasure of living emotions with the desire of emerging: an eternal chase towards wanting "always more". It seems as if the target is chasing itself in a global market, dominated by a return to the pleasure of showing one's belongings and oneself, which frequently characterizes the high social classes of emerging countries such as Ukraine, Russia, and Arab Emirates. A new luxury which needs a language which becomes a show, an ephemeral appearance to contrast the desire of showing off. For these reasons the new advertising campaign was inspired by the fashion world, by the will of surprising and showing-off, and by its international language. Two fantastic women, the shoots of Pierpaolo Ferrari, a famous Photographer from Condé Nast, a brave and recognizable message: fashion suggestions to tell a brand. A path made of images which match the new strategies of Dalla Pieta Yachts: following clients and markets in an objective which leads them to a broader internationalization.

Ferretti Group Launch Ferretti Luxury Beach Residence

ACI Real Estate and Ferretti Group today launched two luxury waterfront residences, “Ferretti Luxury Beach Residence” and “Pershing Luxury Beach Residence”. Announced earlier this year, the two companies joined hands in what is believed to set new trends in luxury waterfront living. The freehold ownership project branded as “Marine Legends”, valued at about UAE 6 billion Dirham - over USD 1.6 billion - and situated at the Waterfront, offers a sprawling 1,969,607 Sq Ft of saleable area. The Ferretti Group is globally renowned for its luxurious, high performance yachts. This unique partnership is another example of ACI Real Estate creating a unique concept to add tangible and intangible value to its offerings. The result in this case is a convergence of prime real estate with a world famous luxury brand to fashion an out of this world living experience. The twin tower Ferretti Luxury Beach Residence and Pershing Luxury Beach Residence are, quite simply, unique. With landscaped gardens amidst canal and sea views, the property offers the latest amenities such as pool, fitness center, sauna and Jacuzzi, and a little something else: eight luxury yachts per brand will be available for residents to charter at preferential rates. These yachts will be purchased by ACI Group. The twin tower Ferretti Luxury Beach Residence will have over 44 floors each, while the Pershing Luxury Beach Residence will have over 41 floors, along with individual retail units at the ground floor of each tower. Ferretti Yachts and Pershing Yachts designers are proposed to design common areas of the towers, lending them their signature touch of elegance and sophistication. The project is slated for completion by 2011.

Ferretti Yachts Aquires Allied Richard Bertram

Ferretti SpA, parent company of Italy's Ferretti Group, has signed a contract to acquire the assets, brands and ongoing operations of US yacht distribution and service provider Allied Richard Bertram Marine Group (ARBMG). Headquartered in Ft Lauderdale, Florida, ARBMG specialises in aftersales service and marketing of both new and pre-owned motoryachts, as well as brokerage services. The acquisition, which is due to be completed in the first week of September, will provide Ferretti with a strong distribution platform to reach and service customers in Florida and the US. ARBMG claims to be one of the leading privately owned yacht sales and service organisations in the US. The company has nine service and distribution centres throughout the state of Florida.

Hatteras Cuts 325 Jobs

Two Brunswick brands in The Hatteras Collection said today that they would be permanently cutting their collective workforce by 325 workers as they reduce production for the 2009 model year. Hatteras, which employed 960 workers, and Albemarle, which employed 95, told employees on Thursday that the two brands would be resized in order to stay "more competitive and profitable" during current market conditions. The 325 jobs were eliminated at the company's North Carolina facilities in New Bern and Edenton. The statement noted that the reduction involves both hourly and salaried personnel. Last January, Hatteras announced the closure of its Swansboro facility, resulting in 200 job cuts.

Intermare Days 2008

The annual appointment with the Intermare days was held the 2nd and 3rd August, what is always a special moment to present the new products in project, but also to unite the Intermare family. For the 2008 of the Intermare days, the organization was set for a dynamic party, involving all the affectionate clients, in a family navigation experience with there Intermare cruisers and yachts, with destination to one of the beautiful islands of the Tuscany archipelago, Capraia. The meeting for the 2008 edition was held in Cala De Medici harbour, with famous Italian TV presenter Carlo Conti welcoming the guests. Now it’s just to wait for the 2009 edition.

Nordhavn 2008 Rendezvous

New event sees the most Nordhavns ever assembled in one place at the same time. Nordhavn's first-ever 'Rendezvous' was an overwhelming success with 29 boats and an additional 9 sets of owners who came sans yachts, taking part in the 5-day event hosted by Nordhavn's US Northeast sales office. In all, more than 100 people converged on the Herreshoff Museum Marina in Bristol, Rhode Island, USA for nearly a week of fun, education, relaxation and comradeship. The event commenced Wednesday July 16th with 16 of the boats pulling up dockside while the rest grabbed moorings. After move-in and registration, guests were treated to welcome cocktails and an address by PAE president Dan Streech who told the crowd how proud he was of the turnout. The remainder of the week unfolded with a tour of Newport, a series of seminars covering topics from Lugger engines to liferaft survival to fishing from trawlers, and finally two evenings of dinner and dancing. In fact, it was the spirit of camaraderie embraced by the owners - many of whom had never met other Nordhavn owners - that prompted PAE's decision to make the Nordhavn Rendezvous an annual event. L.A. Key said she almost didn't make the inaugural affair due to a busy schedule. Like most of the boats, Lucent made the trip from Florida gradually edging its way north. Only Maggie May, a brand new Nordhavn 55 that had just finished commissioning a couple of weeks prior, had to race to make it to Rhode Island in time specifically for the Rendezvous. Only a few weeks old, and already Andy and Susan Francis have put 1,200 nm on Maggie May. With two of the Nordhavn Atlantic Rally boats in attendance, many of the Nordhavns were well-traveled, giving PAE's promotions coordinator Randy Robertson the ideal audience to announce the company's forthcoming Distance Pennant program in which Nordhavn owners will receive special burgees based on incremental mileage they've accumulated since owning their boats.

Riva 2008 Diner Party

Arriving at the end of the nautical year 2007/08, Riva has decided to party, as it does every year, with its Owners and friends. The destination chosen is one of the preferred for the Italian and international summer holidays: Porto Cervo. The traditional rendezvous of the end of the season, that also celebrates the opening of the new year before the official boat shows, took place this year on August 6th at the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda. The enchanting frame of Porto Cervo Marina, where many meetings between Riva and its Owners had already taken place, was once again the set of the gala dinner, during which the shipyard’s novelty for 2008 was revealed in preview: the sophisticated and elegant 92’ Duchessa. During the night, that offered evocative music and an involving ballet accompanying the unveil of the new yacht, Riva was joined by its long-term partners: Audi, Credit Suisse, Veuve Clicquot and Vini Pasqua. The 92’ Duchessa will be officially launched at the Cannes boat show from September 10th to 15th 2008.

Riviera Announces Key Appointments

Australia’s largest luxury boat builder has today announced two key appointments. John Anderson has been appointed CEO of Riviera following the retirement of former CEO Wes Moxey. Following the strong result for Riviera at the Sydney International Boat Show that concluded Tuesday of last week and the overwhelming successful launch of the company’s new flagship 70 Enclosed Flybridge, Mr Moxey felt that the time was right to retire from Riviera. Mr Anderson joined Riviera 18 months ago as Director of Operations of the company’s 14 hectare manufacturing facility on Queensland’s Gold Coast. Prior to joining Riviera, Mr Anderson served for nine years as President of American boat builder Four Winns, who built over 7,000 boats each year. The second key announcement by Riviera this week is the appointment of Les Galbraith as Managing Director of R Marine, Riviera’s retail dealer network, which now spans 13 locations within the region. Mr Galbraith takes over the role from founding Managing Director Tim Sayer. Mr Sayer will undertake an Advanced Management Degree at Harvard University in the US over the next two months before returning to take up a senior strategic role within Riviera. Mr Anderson said that Mr Sayer had performed an outstanding task to bring the R Marine network together. Les Galbraith comes to R Marine from Travelscene American Express where he was General Manager. Mr Galbraith brings to R Marine a passion for delivering lifestyle options for clients around Australia. His other great passion is boating. Mr Anderson said that Les Galbraith will bring to the role a wealth of knowledge about the leisure retail market.

Riviera Largest Infusion Project

Riviera has taken another major technology step with the infusion of the hull on its new 5800 Sport Yacht – one of the largest infusion projects ever undertaken by an Australian boat builder. The 5800 Sport Yacht is scheduled for release at the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show in May next year. John said the benefits of infusion included a lighter weight hull that is very strong, with an exact glass-to-resin ratio and consistent thickness throughout. Riviera has already received orders for six of the four-cabin 5800 Sport Yachts which include three of the revolutionary Volvo Penta IPS drive units.

Riviera Solar Challenge

It was a special boating demonstration in the middle of the Sydney International Boat Show at Darling Harbour on Saturday – the Riviera Solar Boat Challenge featuring competitors from the boating media. The boats are specially developed by apprentices at Riviera for the International Solar Challenge later this year. The boats are modelled on Riviera's popular 45 Open Flybridge model and feature two catamaran hulls with a solid deck between. Each boat is powered by an electric outboard motor that draws energy from a solar panel mounted on the boat's deck. Hillary Buckman represented Ocean magazine and the female journalists while Gary Dickson from SeaSpray competed on behalf of New Zealand. Charlie Walter from BoatsPlus raced on behalf of the online media. They were joined by Miss Wolrd Australia contestant Sonia Lipski. Competition was fierce and fast through two laps around the small area of waterway still clear in Cockle Bay during the massive show. The result was completely confused when the Water Police arrived and arrested Gary for offences unknown. He was quickly released and the police decided they needed to trial one of the boats instead. Everyone declared the boats exciting and fast.

Riviera Cuts 120 Workers

Riviera Yachts announced yesterday that it has cut 121 workers in its Coomera, Australia facility. The company told local news sources that it had "no choice" but to lay off the workers because orders have dropped by 35 per cent. The company also cut 136 workers and 70 contractors several months ago. About 800 staff currently remain. John Anderson, Riviera CEO, also denied rumours that receivers had visited its corporate headquarters last week. He also said that last week's retirement of former Riviera CEO Wes Moxey was not due to any financial troubles at the company. Anderson told the website that the decision prompting the layoffs was based on lower sales from the Sydney and Sanctuary Cove boat shows and a lower order book. He said that Riviera, which has a turnover of A$400 million per year and made A$73 million from both boat shows, has seen orders for new boats drop about 35 per cent. Anderson said that Moxey's retirement was unrelated to the layoffs. Anderson said its new models have attracted interest.

Sea Ray Wins NMMA Customer Satisfaction Honours Again

In professional sports, they would call it a dynasty. For the fourth year in a row, Sea Ray Boats has won more National Marine Manufacturer Association (NMMA) Customer Satisfaction Index (CSI) awards than any other boat builder in the program. In addition, this is the fifth consecutive year that Sea Ray has been recognized by the association for continued excellence in customer satisfaction. Each year, the Marine Industry CSI Awards recognize companies that actively pursue continuous improvement by measuring customer satisfaction. The NMMA’s 2008 CSI award recipients will be formally acknowledged during the annual International Boat Builders’ Exhibition and Conference (IBEX), which will take place from October 6 to 8 at the Miami Beach Convention Center in Miami Beach, Florida. This year, Sea Ray received top honors in eight categories, including Deck Boats, Fiberglass Outboard Boats, Inboard Express Cruiser Boats, Inboard Fishing Express Boats, Inboard Flybridge Sedans & Convertible Boats, Inboard Motoryachts & Trawlers, Sterndrive Bowrider Boats, and Sterndrive Cuddy & Express Boats. This impressive showing is more remarkable in that no other boat builder won more than five awards. In meeting the requirements for the Marine Industry CSI Awards, Sea Ray achieved and maintained an independently measured standard of excellence of 90 percent or higher in customer satisfaction over the past year. This score is based on information provided directly by the consumers who purchased a new boat and engine during the period between April 1, 2007 and March 31, 2008.

Sea Ray AquaPalooza World Largest Boat Party

Third time is the charm for AquaPalooza, the world’s largest boating party, which wrapped up festivities last weekend on rivers, lakes and other bodies of water around the world. Not only will the 2008 edition of the annual event go down as another stunning Sea Ray success, but by all accounts the third year of this multi-location marine celebration was the biggest and best yet! There were more parties, more boats and an astonishing 54 percent more guests as compared to 2007 numbers. This year’s Signature Event, hosted by MarineMax Lake Ozark, MarineMax Osage Beach and MarineMax Laurie, drew thousands of revelers to a giant raft-up on Lake of the Ozarks, Mo., during a picture-perfect Saturday afternoon. Major-league rock bands Cracker, Soul Asylum and Everclear headlined the main stage, while on shore attendees enjoyed food and drinks at Coconuts Caribbean Beach Bar & Grill, as well as volleyball, carnival games, giveaways and vendor booths. The day ended with a fireworks display rivaling that of any Fourth of July exhibition. According to local water patrol estimates, more than 2,500 boats gathered at the Signature Event — that’s nearly double the number of boats that were originally registered. Indeed, in other parts of the country, Sea Ray dealers invited boaters of all stripes to their own local AquaPalooza events. On Canyon Lake near San Antonio, Texas, The Sail & Ski Center organized an overnight cruise and poker run. Port Sandfield Marina, in Port Sandfield, Ont., Canada, hosted an event that featured antique boats and cars, as well as a kids’ coloring contest. Sea Ray of Knoxville rocked the company’s world headquarters in Knoxville, Tenn., with three bands, food, drinks, fireworks and more. Pictures and videos of AquaPalooza 2008 can be viewed at AquaPalooza website. Those interested in details about the next edition of AquaPalooza can check the Web site periodically for updated information.

The new HDR unit will initially be used to treat gynaecological malignancies and will dramatically reduce treatment times. Patients will now be able to be treated on an outpatient basis in the specially designed suite, thus freeing up room in the hospital as well as valuable theatre time. The Sunseeker Charitable Trust donated £220,000 enough to buy the unit outright, complete with couch and dosimetry equipment as specified by the hospital. The Sunseeker Charitable Trust was launched earlier this year to benefit a range of charities and organisations close to the heart of the company.

Project: Italcraft 90

The prestigious Italcraft brand, now since 2004 part of the Inrizzardi Group, presents an innovative new open hard top model. From a name which made innovation it's main theme in the seventies, eighties and nineties with its underwater hull shapes and futuristic designs. The new 27 metre super sport yacht project, so far named 90, is designed by architect Carlo Galeazzi revolving around three different exterior living areas, the traditional one aft, a forward on the bow featuring a c-shaped settee with 2 sun pads on either side and one with a flybridge dedicated to a full relaxed sun worshipper area with its three sun pads. As the above rendering shows the new Italcraft is a very different open, with the designers concentrating on extending the boat's 3 open areas as much as possible. The second impressive element is the deck superstructure whose volume is accented by a transparent cylindrical glass veranda. The dining area can be fully open at the sides and with face to the stern, creating an impression of eating in the open air. For the lower deck 2 ladders at both sides of the bridge lead from the main deck: on the left, to the four guest cabins, and on the right, to the large galley and the adjoining crew area comprising two single cabins and a bathroom. An other innovative solution for the new Italcraft 90 is the automatic ladder from the main deck to the upper solarium one, which retracts into the antenna niche leaving the cockpit free.

Project: Ferretti 470

At the next Genoa International Boat Show, Ferretti Yachts will present the worldwide premiere of the new 470, created to renew, reinterpret and replace the previous 460 model. This was launched in 2004 to great acclaim from clients and press, with almost 80 models now sailing the world’s seas. The new Ferretti 470 consolidates the yard’s intention to complete its new entry range with a model that fully reflects the innovative layout concept introduced by the 630 and 510 models, and penetrate an international target group of young, privileged owners. With the Ferretti 470 the yard aims to increase its market share in well-established nautical poles as Europe and America, but also attack the emerging Middle East and Asia Pacific markets, including China. A product of the highly successful collaboration between the Advanced Yacht Technology, the Ferretti Engineering Division and Studio Zuccon International Project, the 470 is an ideal blend of form and function. The combination of compact size 14.65 metres long, with a 4.34 metre beam, and intelligent optimisation of space creates an opportunity to enjoy the best of Italian-style luxury and experience sailing while surrounded by high levels of comfort associated by this top class builder. For the accommodation, three cabins provide 6 generous berths for the guests and owner, with the forward master cabin featuring an unusual large bathroom for a flybridge of this size. The sun lounge on the flybridge, also offers plenty of room to enjoy sea and sun, where the absence of a roll bar lightens the yacht’s already sleek lines, giving it an elegant, sporty silhouette. The external look is characterised by the large window area providing 360 degree visibility and flooding the living area with light, accenting the warm colours of the gold teak and light upholstery, which combine to create a decor that reflects contemporary tastes. Class 1 - Constanta Romania Preview

Qatar 96 and Jotun will spearhead the fight-back to overhaul Victory’s lead in the World title race as Class 1 heads to the Black Sea resort of Mamaia-Constanta where teams will resume rivalries in the Romanian Grand Prix on Sunday, 31 August, round five of the Class 1 World Powerboat Championship and the fourth and final round of the Class 1 European Championship. And barring all disasters, it is Dubai’s Victory Team who look set to lift the European title. Victory 1, which leads the World Championship by 18 points and carry a ten-point advantage in the European standings, will line up on Mamaia’s Lake Siutghiol for the 21-lap, 94.77Nm Romanian Grand Prix, as the clear favourites to lift a sixth European title for the team and the first silverware of the year after dominating the first half of the season, with Bin Hendi taking three wins from four starts, one with Arif Al Zafeen, out injured after round one, and two with Al Marri. The immediate challenge to Victory 1 are team-mates, Abdullah Al Mehairbi and defending World and European Champion, Jean-Marc Sanchez, who have taken three podiums this season, out-gunning their team-mates last time out. But Victory 7’s throttleman, Sanchez, winner in Romania last year, knows that if he is to retain his title, they have to finish ahead of Victory 1 with several boats between them and an 11-point advantage – a tall order. However, should either of the Victory outfits falter or hit trouble, several boats lie in wait with an outside tilt at the European crown. Jotun, who ended Victory’s winning streak with a sensational win in the BMW Norwegian Grand Prix, are the most improving team this season and now the leading European challenger to the might of the Middle East teams, look for a second consecutive win. For Qatar 96, also with three podiums to their credit, a second European title looks a distant prospect, but the English, Middle East pairing both know that to keep their World title aspirations alive, finishing ahead of both Victory outfits is the priority. Team-mates lying in fourth slot in the overall title race in Qatar 95, will switch engines for Romania and the remainder of the season, opting to run Sterling V8 power-plants. Foresti & Suardi’s Italian-Norwegian partnership head the battle for middle-order supremacy comfortably under-pinning their sixth place with consistency and reliability, finishing in the top six in all races so far this season. For Roscioli Hotels Roma, 2008 is seen as a year for developing new talent, with new charge, Sergio Carrasco, producing some solid performances in his first season, with the all-Spanish pairing taking points finishes from two of their three starts, missing out in Moscow after a harrowing moment when their steering broke, but looking for more points in Romania. SeveneleveN’s crew are also looking at this season as a development year, with a new boat and driver-throttleman combination and more recently a new engine package. And with new engines for the second half of the season, Giorgi is confident that they can repeat the kind of performance that earned them a top six finish in the season opener. After unveiling Class 1’s newest thoroughbred in Moscow, designed by Matteo Nicolini and built by Nicolini Offshore, Mohammed Al-Nassr and Luca Nicolini will give the boat only its third outing in Romania, looking for reliability to realise the promise and potential seen during multiple practice sessions and Pole Position outings.

New Model: Atlantis 50x4

This is a very innovative new model from Atlantis, the Sport Cruiser and Sport Yacht brand of the Azimut Benetti Group, spanning from 31 to 55 feet. Announced as the 48 model during the last Genova Boat Show, the new Atlantis 50x4 was previewed during the Groups yachting gala, held in Viareggio on 28 June. The 50x4 presents itself with innovation and versatility, and available as the title says in 4 different versions, accommodating the various customers requests and needs, but apart this the new Atlantis has also other advantages not seen in a sport yacht of this size. Like the particularly spacious upper deck with a single level walkable surface in teak of over 12 sq. yards, the almost total UV infrared resistant full glass hard top, a record height under the hard top with a good 196cm of headroom over the helm and new IPS engines offering better performance with significantly reduced fuel consumption. The four different versions of the new Atlantis span from the inside available in two or three cabin versions, or the upper deck available with patio door or without in an open layout. The new 50x4 is powered by Volvo's IPS 600 engines, which in our estimate should give top speeds of over 30 knots and cruising in the higher 20s range. Now it's just to wait for the public to admire the new Sport Yacht from Atlantis, with official presentation in September during the Cannes show.

Project: Lazzara LSX 92

Nearly two years after the introduction of its highly successful LSX Seventy Five, Lazzara Yachts is announcing its plans for the completely redesigned follow up, the LSX Ninety Two, scheduled to launch Fall 2008. The award winning Lazzara product development team didn’t just want to build a bigger LSX 75, they wanted to reinvent it. The Lazzara design team added all new features to make the LSX 92 stand apart from the rest, including bold new styling, an expansive flybridge, a private water level terrace off the master stateroom, a retractable aft sun deck shade, a more spacious floor plan than most yachts of its size, and Quad Volvo Penta Quad IPS II drive units. One of the most unique features of the 92 is the generous aft section that includes a large teak swim platform with a garage for toys that converts into a shaded area suitable for entertaining. Lazzara’s 92 features three staterooms plus a master, and crew quarters for two with an optional third bed. The layout also includes Lazzara’s trademark atrium galley. Additionally, those who purchase the yacht will have choices of Lazzara’s signature woodwork in new, contemporary veneers and finishes. The cutting edge 75 was launched in October 2006, and with all new Volvo IPS drives, joystick control and a sleek and elegant design, it immediately became highly acclaimed and widely published. The legacy of innovation through cutting edge rapid prototype technologies won the LSX 75 design team several awards, including the most innovative yacht in its class by Yachts International at the 2007 Cannes International Boat Show. As Dick Lazzara President of the company points out, the new LSX 92 is the new big sibling for the 75, but is also a total different and new yacht, achieving new dimensions in comfort and functionality.

Projects: Beneteau 47 Monte Carlo Hard Top, Beneteau 11 Antares

The new 47 Monte Carlo Hard Top, designed by P.Andreani, takes the modern sport cruiser range of Beneteau to a wider more important audience. It will offer a host of novelties to the Monte Carlos, not only for it's extra 3 metres in length to the 37 model which will make her the new flagship of the range, but thanks to an innovative interior and cockpit layout. The new 47 will have a complete enclosed hard top with patio door, closing half part of the cockpit when the weather is not sweet. On the lower deck the big Monte Carlo really impresses, shaking the and challenging the competition with a smart and spacious layout, featuring the ever demanding full beam owners cabin but also the bonus of offering 2 different options, with a 3 or a 2 cabin version, the last giving an L-shaped settee in the lower deck in replacement to the third cabin. In the plans viewed so far the striking feature seem to be the spacious galley, but also the third cabin with in line berths. Engine options and performance have not announced, but imagine speeds over 30 knots as the smaller Monte Carlos.
It will officially be introduced next September, but we cannot resist the pleasure of announcing the birth of a new generation of Antares. With its abounding space, new levels of comfort and efficient hull the Antares 11 is bound to hold the attention of those who enjoy thrills and long breaks as well as anglers. Designed by Beneteau with P. Sarazin the new 11 Antares will have accommodation for 4 in 2 separate cabins, plus extra 2 berths available in the convertible saloon. Power will be provided by twin Volvo 260hp engines, driving trough shafts.

Boat Review: Itama Forty

Presentation
Classics of the classics. This is how I always described, the glorious boat builder Itama and it's range of boats. Founded 1969 in close premises to Italy's capital city Rome by Mario Amati, Itama was among the first answer to the legend that Teodoli's Magnum was creating in the States. The Itama 38 presented in 1979 was the first reply from Amati, creating with this new model also the first underwater exhaust system. Fast forward to 2004 and here comes the acquisition of Ferretti Group, with the Pershing holding of Itama. The Forty designed by Marco Casali replacing the 40 as reinterpreted by Amati, was the first reply from the new owners and it was already a shining star of better things to come for this legendary brand of timeless Power Yachts.
Accommodation
When launched in the fall of 2005 the Itama Forty surprised everyone in the accommodation fronts. First thanks to the cockpit layout with a big sun lounger, c-shaped settee to starboard, helm station to port and a wetbar just behind it. Second to a very smart 2 cabin interior something always missing from the old 38 which at the time was conceived by Amati more as a weekender for a young couple.
The new forty reversed this trend with a two cabin interior giving impressive accommodation while still keeping with the Itama legendary clean lines. For the nostalgic Itama also offered a single cabin version with two L-shaped saloon settees and a spacious galley to starboard taking the place of the second cabin.

Performance
Itama has always been a follower of pure deep vee hull design with the renowned 22 degrees angle aft of its hulls. The Forty follow the rules it's founder created, and differs from previous Itamas by taking advantage of modern vee drive solutions, which loose nil performance as it was in the past but adds space for comfort below. The Itama Forty thanks to the study of Ferretti Engineering keeps the wonderful weight balance the white blue hulls have a fame for, with an overall improvement. If taking out at sea with a reassuring boat is your thing, the Itama want disappoint your expectations thanks to a perfect balanced hull and a classic deep vee that slices the water in perfect manner.
Positive
Two cabin interior version
Cockpit space layout
Bathing platform functionality
Timeless lines
Negative
No railing to go forward, but I would not want one on this boat
Competition
A lot of competition for Itama, mostly coming also from Central South Italy, like renowned builder Baia, but also some new comers offering the closest threat like XL Marine with there 43 offering a very similar concept to the Forty. Other choices include the 44 Rivarama a modern interpretation, but with the Riva classic flare going into it, with the same idea going behind the Sarnico Spider. Modern looking but what could not be missing here is the Magnum 44 Banzai which offers tremendous performance. As a wild card we choose a lobster boat from USA builder Hinckley for those who still want a classic line but may may be with something more over there heads.
Baia 43 One - loft style single cabin IPS or surface drives, alternative cockpit
Magnum 44 Banzai - single cabin, aggressive modern Pininfarina lines, surface drives
Riva 44 Rivarama - a pure open from Riva, more modern style, 2 cabins
Sarnico 43 Spider - same theme to Riva, invisible second cabin with head, IPS
Unica 42 - classic lines modern windshield, various options inside and propulsion
XL Marine 43 - from the people created the previous 40, similar but 2 cabin heads option
WILD CARD: Hinckley 44 Talaria - lobster classic lines, full weather protection, 2 cabins
Conclusion
If you want a classic no frills design, strong build and a good sea keeper there is not much looking then the Itama Forty. She is undoubtedly the classic of classics, and the improvements made, make sure she will last for an other decade and more. Compared to the previous 38 and 40 models, the new interior layout, cockpit and bathing platform arrangement give the Forty the extra step ahead offering much greater volume for owners who want to use there Itama not only for fast hops between a marina and an island, but also for an extended Summer cruise. The latest Itama Forty completes the cycle thanks to it's modern interior, good accommodation and the handling performance that only a boat that is built around balance and followed by accommodation can give, but most of all outside it remains clean and unchanged as the Itamas have been since eighties.

Project: Menorquin 240 Custom Yacht

The Menorquin Custom Yacht 240 has been created by the prestigious designer Fulvio de Simoni, it is a fusion of unmistakable Menorquin style and ingenious solutions. De Simoni is one of the most prestigious yacht designers with an extensive career which he has developed in the top naval construction firms worldwide. By the time he was 25 years old he set up his own studio from which he has designed for among the most notable yacht builders in Italy, the United States and Turkey. The new Menorquin Custom Yacht 240 has exceptional habitability. This is thanks to its hull shape which, like other Menorquins, has a very broad beam. The swimming platform has a hydraulic retractable extension which makes use of the boats full length. As De Simoni outlines the Menorquin Custom Yacht 240 is a 24 metre boat with the habitability of a 26 metre boat. The new Menorquin flagship has 4 completely separate living areas, 3 on the main deck and 1 on the flybridge. The stern cockpit leads out to the swimming platform, is overlooked from the saloon-dining area and is equipped with an outdoor dining area for up to 10 people. The sleek saloon-dining area is accessed from the stern cockpit area and also at the sides from the deck passages that run from the bow to the stern. This area is equipped with a high bar on the stern port side, a simple stylish cupboard on the stern starboard side and a spacious L-shaped sofa towards the centre of the living area. The dining table is in the bow end of the living area and seats 8 normally but can be extended to seat 10 people. The lateral boat sections facing the saloon side doors fold out to form exterior balconies. The bow has a large sundeck and a third living-dining area that seats eight and can be reached from both sides. The flybridge has a fully equipped dining area, solarium and helm console with 3 independent pilot seats. Cupboards suitable for housing a barbecue, small sink and fridge are found on the starboard side. The tender may be stored aft on the flybridge level where there is sufficient space to store a jet bike and a 4 metre inflatable. A hydraulic davit is positioned on the starboard side for quick and easy release. The Menorquin Custom Yacht 240 incorporates two fully equipped helm stations, one inside and the other on the flybridge. The interior main helm is on the starboard side and has two helm seats. The console’s wood and leather finishes are designed to avoid reflections from the windscreen, a pantograph style door marks a change in composition to this area of the yacht. On the port side is a small study area with a corner desk for use as a computer or card table. A part from a fully equipped kitchen, the lower deck has been intended entirely for rest. There are two double and two single cabins, each with their own washrooms. The main cabin is located towards the centre of the boat and the VIP guestroom is in the bow, both occupy the full beam of the boat and are fitted with double beds, bedside tables, desks, chaise lounges and wardrobes. Both cabins have en suite washrooms and dressing rooms. Because the beam at the bow is practically the same width as at the boats mid-point, the VIP cabin is an exceptionally ample living space. Independent crew accommodation is also found on the lower deck with can be accessed from the main deck. There are two single cabins and facing them is a separate washroom. The kitchen has been designed to incorporate a crew dining area. The yacht’s propulsion is guaranteed by a pair of 1.550 CV diesel engines, which deliver estimated performance of a maximum 24 knots and continues cruising at 20 knots.

Projects: Riviera 3600 Sport Yacht Series II, Riviera 5800 Sport Yacht

Riviera improve the 3600 Sport Yacht, thanks to the Volvo IPS propulsion, giving a revolution to the lower deck accommodation layout making her one of the most spacious and comfortable 11 metres in the market today. So far the exterior lines of the small Sport Yacht model in the plans seem unchanged, although I hope for the addition of extra port holes in both staterooms, as the mid cabin will be very hot and dull if the above exterior lines are confirmed. Performance have not been quoted by the builder, but we expect the double Volvo's IPS 400 at 301 hp giving about 32 knots, similar performance as the Cummins 380hp used to provide but with less fuel consumption and easy docking manoeuvrability thanks to the joystick system by IPS. The Riviera 5800 Sport Yacht inherits the design principles of its predecessors, the award-winning 3600 and 4700 and the 4400 Sport Yachts, most notably the Al fresco lifestyle concept. The new Riviera 5800 Sport Yacht project takes luxury boating to a new level, with its four cabin three bathroom standard layout, something rare in a boat measuring around 17 metres with a full beam master stateroom, and the choice of a lower galley and aft crew cabin. A new digital switching system for DC power enables you to personalise your boat by selecting what mode you want, for example, select cruise or entertainment mode, and the appropriate circuits will be energised. The boat's beautiful, sleek lines match the state of the art propulsion system providing you with faster acceleration, higher top speed, better turning and manoeuvrability all with greater fuel efficiency. Massive interior and exterior entertaining areas combine with simple yet stylish stainless steel framed glass sliding door and the electric sunroof that adds that extra touch of the outdoors.

New Model: Pershing 80

An exuberant wind of change continues to blow up from the Adriatic coast, home of the internationally renowned Ferretti Group brand and world leading luxury motoryacht producer, Pershing. Over past weeks, the entire shipyard and Engineering Department have been absorbed in the delicate final stages of a major new project, the launch of the new Pershing 80. This new model, which has just been unveiled to the Pershing fans and friends, has inherited two very important qualities from the Pershing 72, the craft that enjoyed such remarkable commercial success and visibility in 2007 as well as winning numerous awards. The first is the craft’s vast range of high tech features and the second is its bright, sleek profile. Every single inch of the craft’s innovative 80 feet confirm the shipyard’s grand challenge to focus its know-how and enterprise on this demanding and prestigious segment and to continue to develop craft of increasingly major dimensions. Naturally without compromising any of the typical qualities, such as sports style, speed and control that have always distinguished Pershing yachts. The new Pershing 80’, brainchild of yacht designer Fulvio De Simoni, once again succeeds in offering owners exceptional performance. On the standard version, two powerful 2030hp MTU engines combine with ASD 15L surface propellers to guarantee a peak speed of 43 knots, whereas a faster version with two 2435hp MTU engines offers an incredible peak speed of 50 knots at 1/3 loaded displacement. Of particular note, is the yacht’s floor plan that has been both rationally and creatively designed with highly exclusive details, such as the pilot house, and the leather chairs, panels and tops specially crafted by Poltrona Frau who have once again partnered with Pershing on this splendid craft. But there are many other elements too that give this yacht an edge over its competitors in this increasingly crowded segment. First and foremost, the yacht’s construction process uses the special fibre glass vacuum moulding “Scrimp System”. Secondly, the boat boasts numerous highly exclusive features, such as the elegant slide away glass partition, designed in collaboration with Besenzoni. Originally used on the Pershing 72’, this feature has been further developed and now includes two separate sections that make the option of closing the cockpit off from the upper saloon even more modular. Alternatively the owner can choose to join these two environments together to create a huge and harmonious open space, all on the same level. This highly versatile area is completed by another special Pershing 80’ feature, the expandable-retractable hard top. The cockpit is also both incredibly spacious, and luxuriously finished to ensure it can be enjoyed without any disturbances whatsoever. The stern sundeck has been deliberately designed so it is completely independent from the opening of the spacious garage, which includes a foldaway platform for easy watertoys launching. Standards of comfort are increased also by the Genius gangplank, which doubles as a swimming ladder and a walkway onto the quay when the craft is moored. The dinette in the bows is also a totally new factor, especially when combined with the highly versatile, modular sundeck that also boasts a bimini top. This is another idea that allows owners to create an ideal context for relaxing in or for enjoying breakfast in complete privacy when the boat is moored at the stern. The craft’s typically megayacht concept and floor plan can also be seen in the area below decks. The galley, for example, has been separated from the saloon and placed below deck, next to the crew quarters to offer guests even more privacy. The exceptional large L-shaped galley is a comfortable, discreet area that is packed with hyper technological features and offers a choice of colour schemes. The night zone in both the three and four cabin version is a real gem in terms of comfort and design and boasts remarkable features such as the unique open-view maxi window in the Master Cabin situated in the centre of the boat. This window is a remarkably light and airy feature (thanks to the openable porthole set into the glass) in this elegant space, which has innumerable refined details, including a vanity cabinet top, bed head and handrail created by Poltrona Frau. The Pershing 80 therefore boasts absolute class not only in its interiors, but also in its precise and intransigent exteriors that are distinguished by their sleek, aggressive, modern, streamlined shape and design. With this craft Pershing has created a fabulous example of how its challenging philosophy continues to push back frontiers and offer owners and guests a new way to “surprise the future”. Now it's time for the wider public at the major international boat shows in Cannes, Montecarlo and Genoa to give the judgement on this new jewel in Pershing line of Sport Yachts.

Powerboat P1 - Cowes Torquay Cowes Cancelled, Sunseeker Retires

Powerboat P1, the commercial rights holder to the Cowes-Torquay-Cowes race, has announced with sadness its decision to cancel the event as a result of insufficient entries. The race organisers – the British Powerboat Racing Club, the Royal Yachting Association and Powerboat P1 - had hoped to resurrect the historic race after a three year break in response to requests from British powerboat racers. However, the number of entries received has made the event economically unviable and would fail to deliver a genuine and competitive sporting spectacle. The first Cowes-Torquay-Cowes powerboat race took place in 1961 and it is regarded as one of British offshore racing’s most celebrated and demanding events. The Cowes-Torquay-Cowes race does not form part of the Powerboat P1 World Championship, which comprises 14 races on three continents. The next round of the World Championship will be hosted by the historic port of Vigo on Spain’s Atlantic coast.
On another sad note Powerboat P1 Management has also been advised by Sunseeker Sales Group that the Team Sunseeker and the 11 Sunseeker Challenger boat will not be contesting the remaining three Grand Prix of the Sea events of the 2008 season. As a passionate my hope is to see Sunseeker back in the sea racing the races as soon as possible.

New Model: Azimut 70

In the yearly event of the Azimut Benetti Group, the Yachting Gala which for this year was held in Viareggio, the world renowned yacht builder presented the new Azimut 70 of the new F series generation. Following the latest trends as started with the 43 in 2004, designer Righini and Turin yacht builder follow there renowned form following function design with minimal accents, presenting an ultra modern yacht. There is so far little details available but the pictures show the trademark huge Azimut integrated windows all over the yacht, with what we imagine a similar finished interior as used on the 58 launched during the 2007 Genoa boat show. New 70 has also a similar four cabin interior to the Azimut 68 Plus / Evolution it will go on and replace in the future, but with a more modern layout and some huge improvements of which is the separate galley which can open up on the saloon thanks to an electrically operated window, and all double cabins with in line berths. A striking feature for the new 70 is also the hull color, which for its debut carried an original metallic sky blue, a not seen before finish, following the trend with the green shown on the 58 during the Genoa 2008 presentation.

The soon to come Princess V62 project will combine the performance and versatility of an enclosed hard top sports yacht with the advantages of large volume accommodation spaces including both a main deck saloon and separate lower dining area. The main deck saloon will be elegantly finished with contemporary low-level furniture and seating and is linked to a large open cockpit through triple sliding glass doors. On deck a flexible entertaining space includes generous seating, a wetbar and barbeque and a central sunbed above the aft garage which can accommodate either a rigid inflatable or wetbike. A hydraulic up/down platform is also fitted as standard for added convenience or for stowage of an additional tender. The lower accommodation consists of a full-beam en-suite owner’s stateroom, an en-suite VIP stateroom forward and a large twin cabin to starboard. There is also the option of a single berth crew cabin aft. The lower dining area provides seating for six opposite a well equipped galley and features a large LCD TV mounted inboard. The galley itself boasts a full height fridge freezer, twin bowl stainless steel sink and plentiful storage for an extended stay aboard. The new model will sit in-between the V65 and the V58 in the Princess V Class range, with many of the design features of the larger boat filtering down into the V62. With the latest advanced deep V hull and conventional drive, and with a combined output of up to 2400hp, the V62 is set to deliver true V Class performance with class leading handling and absolute control, for comfortable long range high speed cruising.

New Model: Grand Banks 65 Aleutian RP

The original model that launched the Aleutian Series has been redesigned, refreshed and restyled, with an added foot of length and a long list of new features. New interior layouts provide more and better options for living and entertaining. A more spacious aft deck features dual wing doors and a new enclosure that protects the outside dining area from harsh weather, while opening easily to let in the sun. The flybridge overhang has also been extended further aft to provide more protection from the elements. The new 65RP also features port and starboard-side pilothouse doors, easier engine room access through a new port-side door, and a host of other performance and luxury features. What hasn't changed is her top-performing Fexas-designed hull, making the 65RP the best for comfort and stability among blue-water cruisers.
