Project: Canados 428 Gladiator

To find a Canados under fifteen meter we have to go as late 1970s.  But the new Cantieri Navali di Ostia owner Michel Karsenti has an ambitious project and want to make the yard on the road map of World yachting starting from this entry level 42 feet to the large 145 feet super yacht.  Designed by Marco Casali of Itama and Bavaria yachts fame the 428 Gladiator will be a day cruiser with a main function for a socializing exterior.  So far the layout offered for the outside will be for a central sun-pad, dinette, and console. The interior can be fully customized, with a standard layout of a shower head, galley, and large lounger double berth forward..  The 428 Gladiator by Canados is a performing sport cruiser with its primary use being that of a day boat and single handling use.

New Model: Sunseeker 116 Yacht

Sunseeker seems to have fully embraced the semi wide body two deck and a half design, and now launch the new 116 Yacht, a model which is a further development of the 115 Sport Yacht.  The 116 Yacht is very much different to the 115, with a completely revamped stern area. The 116 Yacht will sit as third largest model in the current Sunseeker line up and continues the road map which the Poole, Uniited Kingdom builder started since the mid nineties when it launched its first at the time super yacht, the 80 Predator.  A long passage considering that the Poole builder in 2015 celebrated the launch of one hundred build super yachts above thirty meters. Like all the big Sunseeker the 116 Yacht is a semi custom on order build, with options available on plan as a Spa pool option on the fore deck or the flybridge,

blogger - American Italian Connection

It is a recurring connection which has been happening over the years in the boating industry, that of Americans to cooperate with Italians.  A connection which has widespread over the years in other areas of  the motor boating World as designers, engineering, and construction advances. There is a certain connection between the two countries which in boating World never stopped one way or another to happen.  In 2016 this happens again in the format which it started, a boat build in Italy for a USA manufacturer, and possibly by the same company starting this connection, i.e Chris Craft.
First it was Chris Craft in the seventies who started to produce boats for Europe in Fiumicino, on the Rome Tiber river exit to the sea in Italy. A production unit which will last over ten years till the end eighties. Then we had Magnum who bought out by Italian entrepreneur Theodoli in 1976, started to have the interior of some of the larger Magnum's produced in Italy. Riva also had the share of cooperation and apart being owned by the Whitaker Group in the late sixties till the eighties also co-produced the Riva Bertram 25, which was a more expensive cruiser version of the Bertram 25.  Then we go again to Bertram who in 1992 was bought by Italian Gianni Varasi, sold to Intek Group, Ferretti Group in 1998, and last sold to Gavio in 2015. Bertram has since the nineties been owned by Italians.
Now in 2016 it is just another back to the past from Chris Craft when it presented its new 42 Commander in Summer.  A model which is basically the Austin Parker 42 with changes in interior accommodation layout and a switch to IPS pod propulsion.  The Chris Craft 42 Commander will still be produced in Italy at Austin Parker establishment in Pisa, Italy. Interesting the Austin Parker Chris Craft connection should not stop here, with a bigger model, possibly to be the Austin Parker 52/54 to become part of the Chris Craft Commander range.
In all this worth to note that the two large boating nations in the World, although differing in the type of boat product on offer, have always had interest in cooperating, and looked at each other for input and improvements.

Monthly News - September 2016

-pic of the month- Ferretti Group Blue Wonderful

Azimut Benetti Group Continues to Grow

At the annual Cannes Yachting Festival, Azimut|Benetti looks confidently to the future from a position of strength built on solid results. With value of production standing at more than €700m and constant growth of 15% over the last two years, the Italian Group confirms that it is the world’s leading luxury yacht builder in terms of business results, the number of yachts built, the breadth of the range on offer, and the reach and coverage of the distribution network and production sites. What is the key to this success? A constant focus on technical research and creative design, higher than average investments and a visionary spirit. Azimut|Benetti Group is attending the Cannes Yachting Festival - the first international boat show of the season - with 21 models (17 from Azimut Yachts and 4 from Benetti) ranging from 10 to 40 meters in length. Buoyed by solid results, the Group’s growth strategy is based on ever more substantial investments in product development, innovative technology and processes, new design trends and a global commercial presence. Financially speaking, the company closed its fiscal year (September 2015 - August 2016) reporting value of production of more than €700 millions, and a positive net result. The Group, which produces almost 300 yachts annually, has introduced innovative products over the past year which have all sold out: the new carbon fiber Fly models, the new Benetti Fast yachts with Rolls Royce azipod propulsion systems, and finally Benetti’s gigayachts reaching over 90 meters in length. Confirming the Group’s strategy, planned investments for the coming three-year period in research & development, in the implementation of production processes, and in the development of new products amount to about €100 milion, a sharp rise of 15% on the previous three-year period. Azimut|Benetti Group’s launch schedule is extraordinary for the yacht world, with no less than 12 new models announced in the 10 to 50 meter range over the next three years, joining the 14 models launched in the previous three year period. This offers Azimut and Benetti customers the broadest and most up-to-date fleet on the international yacht market. It is a strategy nourished by constant innovation and evolving creative design, with the Group announcing an agreement with Giorgio M. Cassetta to design the exteriors of the new Mediterraneo 116’ and an exclusive contract with Achille Salvagni for the interiors in all Fly Collection models over 50 feet and the interiors of the Benetti Class range. Finally, Francesco Guida has been engaged to design the interiors of the new S7 in the Azimut S Collection. Another factor behind the Group’s success is without doubt its work to strengthen the dealer network worldwide, with the record number of 70 through a total of 138 sales and assistance offices. In fact, the company has always favoured direct local operations, with a view to maintaining market presence through exclusive distribution under the Azimut Yachts brand, in partnership with top local operators. The strategy defined by the Group has, on one hand, allowed it to ride out international financial turbulence, and on the other to consolidate value and volume growth, confirming its financial solidity, production supremacy and ability to act as a driver of the global yacht segment. Group President and majority shareholder Paolo Vitelli commented on the good results by saying: “We have never stopped investing all our resources in the product, and the market recognises this in the form of sales. I feel proud of the more than two thousand people who work in the Group. While many of them are young, they not only have a wealth of experience and a shared passion for the product and the technology it draws on, but also identify strongly with the company’s values.” The majority shareholder by a substantial margin of Azimut|Benetti Group is the Vitelli family, with a holding of 88%, while the remaining share capital is held by Tamburi Investments Partners (TIP) with 12% and the management team, who have a small stake.

Azimut Benetti Host Fifty Ferrari

On Saturday the 10th of September, the Azimut|Benetti Shipyard in Avigliana (Turin) hosted “Eccellenze motoristiche”, the yearly motoring event of Ferrari and heritage cars. The event started on Friday the 9th of September in Strona (Biella) and ended in La Thuille (Ao) on Sunday the 11th of September. Almost 50 cars and 200 participants arrived in Azimut|Benetti Head Quarter. The guests, people all fond of Ferrari and heritage cars, visited the shipyard where the famous Yachts are made and whizzed on their cars for a challenging run between the plants. Challengers also had the opportunity of discovering the work processes, the passion and the Italian craftsmanship’s quality of Azimut|Benetti. The event gathered two Made in Italy excellences, two brands that are synonymous with luxury, innovation and prestige: on one side, the shining beauty of Ferrari cars and, on the other, the sinuous and hi-tech shapes of worldwide famous Azimut yachts. With the welcoming of Azimut Yachts shipyard for a trip in the unique Italian excellence.

Azimut Wins Most Advance Yacht at World Yacht Trophies 2016

The award recognises the research and development investments made by Azimut Benetti Group in recent years, which continue to contribute to maintaining the shipyard’s position of leadership on world markets. Organised by French magazine Yachts France in the framework of the 2016 Cannes Yachting Festival, the World Yachts Trophies are considered among the most prestigious awards in the industry. The award ceremony was held on Saturday, September 12, against the magnificent backdrop of the Carlton Hotel in Cannes. Azimut 66 won the “Most Technologically Advanced Yacht” in the 50’ to 80’ range. For Azimut 66, this is the second acknowledgement received a matter of days since its presentation at the Cannes Boat Show. A few days ago, in fact, the yacht was officially nominated for the European Powerboat of the Year Award 2017, competing against five other boats in the category over 45 feet in length. Both the award and the nomination are a further demonstration of how highly this model is appreciated for its uniqueness and originality, after being given an extremely favorable reception by the market. Most importantly, they confirm the success of the strategy of making long term investments in research and development, in the implementation of production processes, and in the development of new products, totaling about Euro 100m in the three-year period 2016-2019.

Bavaria Achieves Best Business Results Since 2009

At the end of the 2015/16 fiscal year, the Bavaria Group can reveal positive operating results for the second consecutive year. Compared with the previous year, the operating result (EBITDA) increased five-fold, and is now in the mid-seven-figure range. Despite stagnating markets for sailing yachts and motor boats in Europe, and weak economic growth in the United States and the Asian region, the Bavaria Group has once again held its ground. The EBITDA has been increased five fold by the second largest shipyard in the world last year. After the years of economic crisis following 2009, this is already the second positive result in a row, and confirms the positive trend of business results of the Bavaria Group over the last five years. Even outside of professional circles, the Bavaria Group remains one of the most modern shipyards in the marine industry, and boasts the highest growth potential. Under the brand Bavaria Yachts, 24 different models of catamarans, sailing yachts, and motor boats are produced at the headquarters in Giebelstadt and the production site for multi-hulls in
Rochefort (France). In the new financial year, production for the new motor yacht product lines Bavaria E40 and Bavaria R40 was switched to an innovative modular design. Interior, hull and decks are built in parallel on their own line for these revolutionary motor yachts, and assembled at the end of the 125-metre production line. The result is higher quality, a shorter construction period, and better working conditions for the employees. The three other production lines for sailing and motor yachts have also seen some effective modernization since the summer break. From the start of the new financial year, all yachts from Bavaria are constructed using a complex vacuum infusion process. Now even lighter and more stable, the hulls are also more durable, make driving more cost-efficient and help conserve the environment during construction. With these two new innovative manufacturing methods, the Bavaria Group continues to expand its undisputed worldwide leading position in the manufacture of production series yachts. In particular, the Bavaria Catamarans division has grown strongly in the last financial year. Since taking over the Rochefort yard in 2014, production has trebled. A further extension of the experienced shipyard for multihulls will be implemented as planned in the new fiscal year, to meet the demand for the new Nautitech 40 and Nautitech 46 models. The key to the yard’s success in the heart of Germany can be found in the high customer satisfaction among Bavaria owners and charter clients. In an independent customer survey, created by the consultancy Kemény Böhme and Company from Munich at the beginning of the year, more than 82 percent of respondents equated the image of Bavaria with German premium car brands. The majority of the participants of the survey confirmed the yachts of Bavaria as having satisfactory sailing and driving characteristics, perfect workmanship, and high standards of comfort and equipment.

Rosario and Alfredo Mercuri, owners of Evo Yachts, commented, “For Evo Yachts this new collaboration marks the beginning of our expansion into international markets, a natural evolution, facilitated by the global reputation and press coverage that our first model, the Evo 43 earned with its debut last year. G Marine is one of the best dealers in USA--we could not find a better partner.” “We are primarily boaters, who also sell boats,” says David Galante, partner in the G Marine family business. “We are captivated by excellent construction, function, customization and the pure joy that boating brings to our families and clients. Sanlorenzo Leaps Forward

Sanlorenzo’s production and turnover progression, with the exception of an inflection in 2012 and 2013, registered a net growth since 2004, year of the shipyard acquisition, with a 16 % CAGR (Compound Average Growth Rate), constantly growing during the turbulent crisis years that followed 2008 (two-thirds of the period), and reaching, in 2016, a result 26% higher than that of 2008, a golden year in the global nautical business. In particular, Sanlorenzo managed to increase its value of production in 2016 by 15% with respect to 2015, reaching €250 million (forecast), and was able to keep its profitability in spite of the difficult years and lasting crisis, confirming also for 2016 a €25 million Ebitda (forecast), equivalent to a 20% growth with respect to the €21 million of 2015, an resulting from the production of 28 yachts, 40% more than the previous year. The budget forecast for 2017 appears to be even more encouraging, with a turnover reaching €275 million and an Ebitda increasing by 12% to €28 million, thanks to a 35% increase of the production, with 38 yachts. These more than positive results have been made possible by two significant factors: The opening towards new markets, which today are positively responding to the yachting sector, specifically the EMEA area (Europe, Middle East, Africa) and the APAC area (Asia-Pacific), and the consolidation in the Americas region, where a new generation of young yacht owners is entering the yachting world. A significant increase in the average length of yachts and the entrance in the world of superyachts and megayachts, with a consequent increase in the value of the yachts sold, mainly in the production high end on the new markets. The following strong points of Sanlorenzo remain valid at a global level: Made-to-measure yachts, realized specifically for each owner. Classic and elegant design, consolidating as a timeless value. Distribution through a network of Brand Representatives, consisting in a number of subsidiary companies , that allows Sanlorenzo to control directly the global market, without recurring to mediation and intermediaries, a unique case in the yachting sector. Thanks to its expansion politics, the solidity of its strong points, continuous innovation, the dimensional growth of model and the acquisition of new production units, Sanlorenzo is proud to be the only company in the nautical sector at a global level to have not only maintained intact the dimension of its workforce, without exploiting the Redundancy Fund. Against the flow in the nautical and in most of other industrial business, Sanlorenzo has been able to increase the number of its employees in 2015/2016, hiring 50 new people at different levels. In 2016/2017 more 50 employees are expected to be hired, reaching a direct workforce or 300 units and, along with the 700 workers of Sanlorenzo’s subcontractors, the total number of people working everyday on the yacht construction and company management is 1000. This human resource expansion is a significant investment that the company considered essential in order to straighten its current placement and maintain a growing trend. Production sites expansion and investments To reach its goals, Sanlorenzo is following a policy of expansion of its production sites, starting from the original Ameglia shipyard, where the Headquarters are located. Its area and volume will double by 2018, in line with a project by Studio Archea Associati of Florence, famous for designing Cantine Antinori in San Casciano, and the requalification of the San Lorenzo marketplace in Florence. The Viareggio premises will acquire two new sheds and a large external area that will allow for the production of 20 to 50 fiberglass motoryachts between 78’ and 140’. The big step is represented by the acquisition of the Cantieri San Marco in La Spezia, located in the gulf, which houses large sheds deep docks, and cranes for a total surface of 50.000 square meters (30.000 indoors and 1800 dedicated to the offices). All the production of metal superyachts (40Alloy, 460Exp, 46Steel, 52Steel, 64Steel, and the upcoming 67Steel) has been concentrated in this shipyard, with a production capacity of 8 superyachts. This imposing production site, named Sanlorenzo Superyacht, is currently building two 460Exp models, two 52-meter units of the new 52 Steel model and the new flagship 64 Steel, and it will also allow to carry out refitting activities on superyachts. The total investment for the 2017-2019 period amounts to €60 Millions: €20 Millions in new products and €40 Millions in assets. Global Order Book ranking Since 2014, Sanlorenzo has been ranking second place in the Global Order Book, the annual list of orders of the international superyacht builders (for yachts over 80’, 24 meters) published by the American magazine Showboats Interrnational, after maintaining the 3 rd position in the past 4 years. In 2016, its position has been reconfirmed with 54 new projects and 1891 meters under construction, above Ferretti Group (which includes 5 brands, Ferretti Yachts, Custom Line, Crn, Pershing, Riva), that has 54 new projects but 1791 meters under construction, and just behind Azimut-Benetti group (which includes Azimut Yachts, Azimut Grande, and Benetti) with 2580 meters under construction but with 63 new projects, only 9 more than Sanlorenzo that operates with one brand.

Sanlorenzo Takes Double Accolade at World Yacht Trophies

In the refined setting of Intercontinental Carlton Hotel’s private beach in Cannes, in front of an international audience, Sanlorenzo obtained two important accolades in the 2016 edition of the World Yachts Trophies: Massimo Perotti: Personality of the Year, and SL78: Best Exterior Design. The international jury awarded Massimo Perotti Chairman/CEO of Sanlorenzo S.p.a. the prestigious Personality of the Year prize, rewarded for “an outstanding career as in a few years he has led Sanlorenzo among the three largest yacht builders of over 24 mt. In the latest years the shipyard has constantly progressed in building larger size yachts, with two 64-meter superyachts under construction in the La Spezia facility. Large investment in infrastructures have contributed to this upgrade”. Since 2005, when Massimo Perotti acquired the shipyard, Sanlorenzo has experienced an impressive worldwide growth, though maintaining a strong focus on the total customization of its products. In 10 years of Perotti’s management, Sanlorenzo’s turnover has grown from the initial 57 Million in 2005 to 250 Million Euro in 2015. The turnover forecast for 2017 is 257 Million Euro. The new Sanlorenzo SL78, world premiere at the Cannes Yachting Festival, was awarded for the best exterior design in the 24 to 38-meter range. The jury awarded the SL78 with the following motivation: “This prestigious Italian brand offers an access to the Sanlorenzo universe through the smallest yacht in its range. SL78 unites the traditional elegance of exterior lines with innovative features, like the new tender launching system, a Sanlorenzo exclusive”. The exterior lines of the new SL78 were redesigned with the greatest respect for Sanlorenzo’s DNA, the best expression of technological research applied to the excellence of the boatbuilding sector, in a continuous innovation into tradition, proposing contemporary but timeless lines. SL78 is the only motoryacht in its category to be made-to-measure according to the requests of its owner, as each Sanlorenzo since 1958. The best yachts participated, as usual, in the famous Yacht Parade, a défilé of yachts that attracts the attention of the entire city, gathered for the occasion on the Croisette to admire the novelties launched on the market by shipyards from all over the world.

Sunseeker continued to see high levels of visitors at the Southampton Boat Show, the UK’s largest in-water boat show, and held a record number of pre-booked meetings with existing and new customers. In particular, interest in the new Manhattan 52 has been exceptional. This new yacht is Sunseeker’s smallest flybridge model in over a decade and exemplifies the latest in Sunseeker’s cutting-edge design. The Manhattan 52 is designed to maximize entertainment options, light and living space throughout the boat and it sets the design direction for a new wave of Manhattan models that will be introduced over the coming years. Sean Robertson, Sales Director at Sunseeker International, commented: "This year’s Cannes and Southampton Shows have been truly excellent - we've enjoyed really positive events with substantial confirmed retail orders, on sales of 25 luxury motoryachts across the range, with an additional £25m of orders to be agreed shortly. Sunseeker Returns to Profit

Sunseeker International has revealed that it moved back in to profit in the second quarter of 2016 and has forecasted an overall return to profit for the full year. The business also announced a massive £50 million of investment to be spent across new products, improved shipyard facilities and the continued recruitment of people over the next five years. This follows much improved results through sustained growth in 2015 which also saw considerable levels of investment during the year. These results can also be attributed to a period of significant change and restructuring within the business and the robust plan put together by Sunseeker’s new executive team which saw investment in new products, shipyards, growing its already first class global dealer network, and hiring skilled staff and apprentices. This was coupled with building better efficiencies throughout the business and driving a strong and continually improving order book which is 24% up (by turnover) year-on-year in 2016. The investment in new model development is already reaping rewards with five new model launches in 2016 including the 131 Yacht, 95 Yacht, Manhattan 52, 116 Yacht and Predator 68 MK II, securing over £220 million of orders at retail value to date. These multiple model launches are set to continue as part of a long term product plan that will see new model introductions across the size range over the next five years. The executive team’s plan to invest in long term profitable growth and to help drive excellence, innovation and efficiency across the business has set the company on a fresh course to strengthen its position as the number one global brand for luxury performance motor yachts. The plan is backed by majority shareholder Wanda Group, which has underwritten the investment to support the plan. As well as the significant investment, Sunseeker also made huge financial progress in 2015, reducing losses by 67% to £13.6 million and paving the way for the company to return to profit in 2016. Phil Popham, CEO of Sunseeker International, said: “I am delighted with our performance. 2016 has been a defining year for Sunseeker and we are confident of achieving strong, profitable and sustained long term growth as we continue to invest in the business for the future. This was just the start of our journey, we will continue to invest heavily over the next five years in new product development, shipyards and our people. “All this, underpinned by a strong forward order book, means we are very excited for the future of this business.”

Engine: MAN i6 730hp

MAN presents its latest generation of six-cylinder engine designed to be used in yachts and trawlers up to seventeen meters in length, as well as in sport fishing boats. The basic six-cylinder engine has been tried and tested many hundreds of thousands of times in a wide range of on and off-road machinery since it was first introduced in 2007. Modified especially for the use in pleasure craft, the six-cylinder in-line engine 730hp i6-730 has a cylinder capacity of 12.4 l available for light duty operations. The future-proof i6-730 yacht engine is based on the D2676 model, also have a modern common rail system offering up to 1800 bar for high mean pressures and optimized combustion. This enables MAN engineers to achieve lower vibrations and noise emissions along with reduced fuel consumption. To ensure compliance with strict emissions legislation, MAN shares information and data on a regular basis with institutions including the US Environmental Protection Agency and the International Maritime Organization. The new yacht engine also offer the broad torque plateau that is characteristic for MAN marine engines generating 2450 Nm at between 1200 and 2100 rpm. This provides maximum torque over a broad engine speed range at the lowest specific fuel consumption, achieving consistent acceleration and a fast and efficient planing. MAN’s design engineers came up with an optional design cover for the six-cylinder engine, ensuring to fulfill the criteria of elegance and high performance. The sophisticated and timeless design of the perfectly shaped engine stays within the style of modern luxury yachts. For naval architects the new six-cylinder inline engines come in MAN’s typically compact 1800 x 922 x 1103 mm design and have an even more streamlined oil pan design. With a dry weight of 1200 kg, the new generation of engines also has an improved power to weight ratio. The the MAN marine diesel engines i6-730 is based on the D2676 and is set to replace the predecessor model R6-730 based on the D2876 in the medium term.
