Guy Couach 1926 - 2014

Guy Couach, who founded the Couach shipyard in France in 1962 to manufacture boats in composite materials, died January 6, 2014. He was 88.  Couach was the grandson of Albert Couach, who founded Couach marine engines in 1897. Guy Couach joined the family business as a young man and was among the first people to consider the mass production of motorboats, with work he began in 1946. In 1962 he founded Guy Couach shipyard, which built boats in composite. One of his earliest developments was the Aramat, a yacht built in 1970 from a Kevlar-based material.  Several hundred high-performance yachts have followed in the decades since. Nepteam, a regional investment group, bought the Couach yard in 2011. The facility continues to turn out composite boats from 65 to 164 feet LOA, including patrol and rescue boats for navy and coast guard operations.

Improve-it = Galeon 550 Fly

It comes to no surprise from Galeon to finish the yachts as customers desire.  It does so with its smaller entry brand models as the 325, so on the 550 Fly this surely come out as standard procedure. In the 2013 fall Galeon delivered a 550 Fly finished in high gloss polisander, giving the owner a unique interior especially compared to recent trends.  This is the third wood finish choice for the three double cabin flybridge motor yacht 550 Fly model, the other two being dark walnut, and wenge wood.  The polisander wood finish of this 550 Fly gives a more classic and luxurious interior feel compared to the currently more popular and modern wenge and dark walnut choices.

New Model: Marlow 62E Explorer

Introduced in February 2013, the Marlow 62E Explore continues the new series line from this US brand Asian build yachts.  The 62 E replaces the 61 introduced in 2004 with an innovation and more space being the key in the change of this new model. One short example of larger is that the 62E features one foot more beam then the 61 increasing space in every area of the yacht, both interior and exterior. The 62 Explorer also features additional fuel storage which equals more range, and less draft thanks to a reduced shaft angle which also improves speed and fuel economy.  Marlow says these shaft angle changes coupled with the less weight of patented Full Stack Infusion build, reduce fuel burn at cruise by 10% plus an extra 5% of top speed. Interior wise the Marlow 62E Explorer offers a layout with three double cabins with a full beam amidships owners stateroom with shower heads looking to aft.  A VIP cabin is to fore and this can be made to include two additional bunk berths.  A third guest cabin is located to starboard.  This cabin can be made as an office or a washing room. The main deck is a split level style with a large welcoming saloon.  The raised part features a galley, an L-shaped dinette to port, and a central helm station.  A crew cabin is located to aft which sleep three persons, and features a compact shower head.

Project: Camper and Nicholsons 80 Gelyce

Seems the Italian ownership of this brand Leonardo Ferragamo is presenting some interesting projects with a full line of down East inspired sports cruisers and yachts, and now also an important super yacht offered in design.  The 80 Gelyce presented here is the largest of the down east line and stands at the entrance to be called a super yacht. The names Gelyce here respects the philosophy of a power-boat, since these where in actual fact fast commuters who served the J-class competing in the Americas Cup in the nineteen thirties. The 80 Gelyce is mostly a project looking towards outside spaces, with also an interesting concept for the flash fore deck featuring a nice louging area which does not disturb the lines.  Below is space for three double cabins, including a full beam owners stateroom.  To fore is the galley, a large C-shaped dinette, and two double crew cabins.  Power is a standard more long range package of twin MAN 1000hp which gives a 22 knots cruise.  A fast option of twin 1622hp Cat engines raises max speed to 33 knots.
